Last one!

The 2009 KBS Drama Awards were also held on December 31, and as with the other two station awards ceremonies, there weren’t a lot of surprises, particularly with the Daesang, which went to Lee Byung-heon. (Lee was outstanding in IRIS, but I think he practically had the Daesang in the bag even before the drama aired — no way KBS was going to score a big star like him and not reward him. Refer to: Song Seung-heon’s MBC Daesang last year.)

All of these awards ceremonies are essentially year-end parties where the broadcasters pat their big successes on the back. That’s why most of the actors given awards were from hit shows, and also why there are few surprises. But of all the awards shows, KBS has the most varied list of winners, and is my personal favorite to look at and comment on, since I’ve seen most of the big shows represented. (Unlike SBS, where many of the winners were from shows I didn’t care for, such as Wife’s Temptation.)

There were, of course, a few puzzlers. I understand wanting to include Kim Tae-hee in the IRIS largesse, even though her acting itself wasn’t outstanding — but her over Kim So-yeon? And I see why they would want to thank Kim Ah-joong for taking on a drama when she could have chosen to build her movie career instead. But how could you award Kim Ah-joong’s acting in Accidental Couple and NOT give one to Hwang Jung-min, who was the largest single source of charm in that drama?

No surprise here, and no contest: 1 big movie star + 1 of the station’s biggest hits of the year = Daesang. Lee Byung-heon came with his IRIS co-star Kim Tae-hee on his arm. (Kim rarely looks bad, but I do think her makeup is overdone so that it washes her out. She looks a little zombie-like in the face.)

Did their IRIS buddies Jung Jun-ho and Kim Seung-woo color-coordinate on purpose?

I can’t believe Kim Tae-hee won an acting award and Kim So-yeon didn’t; maybe fans will agree, since Kim So-yeon was given the popularity award. Lee Da-hae didn’t have a KBS show this year, but will be in their upcoming Chuno in the new year. Also, don’t get me wrong — I think she looks stunning, as usual — but I HATE her dress. The side cutouts aren’t particularly sexy or attractive, and she would have looked so classy and elegant if her dress didn’t have them.

Chae Shi-ra played the title role in the long weekend sageuk Iron Empress, and was rewarded with a Top Excellence Award. She never seems to age, and looks amazing.

Ji Jin-hee‘s The Man Who Can’t Get Married was a less-watched, sorta-disappointing show, but his comic antics netted him an Excellence award.

Choi Chul-ho has had a busy year! He had an MBC comedy (Queen of Housewives) and a KBS trendy (Partner), but it was his role in Iron Empress that got him an award here.

Kim Ah-joong (Accidental Couple) looks like a bride. I can’t wait for the mermaid-shape dress to go out of fashion.

Yiiiikes. You know, I see what Yoon Eun-hye (My Fair Lady) was going for. She’s known for her edgy, bold fashion style and no matter what she’s wearing, whether it be chic or crazy, she holds herself tall. But this reminds me of the Oscars when Angelina Jolie went goth and everyone thought, “I know what she’s doing, and I don’t like it.” I get what Yoon Eun-hye is doing here, and I don’t like it.

She did, however, earn mention for being part of a Best Couple with Yoon Sang-hyun, her co-star in My Fair Lady. This did feel like the station’s attempt to appease both actors given their mess of a drama, since neither star was included in the acting awards. At least Yoon Sang-hyun has his award for Queen of Housewives.

Lee Min-ho! The Boys Before Flowers star was given a newcomer award, and is looking cute and polished. (He has a tendency to look a little unpolished at awards shows — it’s his inner dork showing, I’m sure — but tonight he’s smooth and dapper.) Totally deserves the award.

Kim So-eun was also given a newcomer award, based on her well-received performances in not one but three KBS dramas — Boys Before Flowers, Iron Empress, and The Man Who Can’t Get Married. She’s definitely an up-and-comer to watch.

WTF? And also, sigh. Did Gu Hye-sun think that if she didn’t come dressed as a schoolgirl, nobody would remember that she was in Boys Before Flowers? It’s one thing to come in costume for a character, but when you’re dressing for an awards show, this seems… bizarre. She’s 25, which makes her a little old to be dressing as a high schooler outside of acting roles.

By all accounts, Kim Ji-suk‘s role in this year’s production of Hometown of Legends was a mess of unintentional hilarity. (On the upside, he had a super-hit of a film with Take Off.) He wears his suit well, and does the no-tie look with casual confidence.

His fellow Hometown of Legends colleague Kim Sung-eun was given an award for her part. I think Kim is a good actress who hasn’t yet gotten her big breakout role, though she’s done well in supporting parts. I love the shape and flow of her red strapless number here.

How cute that Sohn Hyun-joo came with his co-stars from Sol Pharmacy, who played his brothers! (They are Ji Chang-wook, Han Sang-jin, and Lee Pil-mo.) Sohn has played a wide range of characters in his career — eccentrics, cranks, bastards — but his sweet, nice-guy turn in Sol Pharmacy was a joy to watch.

Here’s another of their co-stars, Yoo Sun (Sons of Sol Pharmacy), aka Bokifer. I don’t know where I’d wear it, but I want that dress. (That faux obi sash seems to be quite the thing these days, doesn’t it?)

Yoo Hana was spunky Eun-ji in Sol Pharmacy, and comes in a rather voluminous gown. I can’t decide if I like it, or if it makes her look like a mummy. A really pretty mummy.

That slit looks a little dangerous on the front of Jo Ahn‘s pink dress. She won an award, along with co-star Oh Man-seok, for Everybody Cha Cha Cha.

I had to double-check the credentials for Park Min-young, because why is she at the KBS show instead of the SBS one, which was on the same night? She did a KBS series last year, Hometown of Legends, but I’m sure nobody would have thought it odd for her to skip KBS since she actually headlined an SBS drama this year. Well, maybe it makes sense if you consider that said SBS drama (Ja Myung Go) had a painful run and was largely ignored at the SBS awards. (Ja Myung Go‘s Jung Kyung-ho did get an award, but that could have been more influenced by his current SBS gig, Smile.) Also: That dress is short!

Is it also interesting that Moon Chae-won chose KBS over SBS? She had supporting roles in dramas for both stations, and her SBS drama (Brilliant Legacy) was much more successful than her KBS one (My Fair Lady). All that speculation aside, I think Moon is developing a pretty nice fashion sense, and while I wouldn’t call her a fashionista, she often shows up at awards shows and red carpets looking beautiful, youthful, and fresh. The pink looks great on her.

Moon Jung-hee won an award for a supporting role in Iron Empress. I like Moon a lot — she has a great warmth to her — but that dress! It’s like she got caught up in sports bandages, then ran into a vat of hot pink dye.

Choi Myung-gil, left, just wrapped up the trendy drama Invincible Lee Pyeong-gang, while Choi Su-rin (who is really very underrated) had two KBS projects this year — Partner and the short special Kyung-sook, Kyung-sook’s Father.

Ji Hyun-woo, also of Invincible Lee Pyeong-gang, doesn’t look terribly excited to be here…

There’s an appealing simplicity in the draping of Jang Hee-jin‘s (Hometown of Legends) clean, chic dress.

In contrast, Park Han-byul (Everybody Cha Cha Cha) has way too much going on with her dress. That bulky feathery (furry?) fringe, the voluminous vertically-striped skirt… it distracts one’s attention away from her, which is too bad since she’s lovely.

I think Lee Chae-young‘s (Iron Empress) dress could have been cute in theory… but in practice it looks a little sloppy and, uh, cheap?

For a while, Kim Hye-jin was known mostly as “Kim Tae-hee’s friend,” since she played the part as a fellow NSS agent in IRIS. Not really a fan of the super-high slit in an otherwise plain gown.

Park Eun-bin had roles in Iron Empress and MBC’s Queen Seon-deok, and won this night for the former. At only 17 years old, that dress is a bit of a risk… but I actually like it a lot, after getting over the initial surprise. It has an old-fashioned charm to it, but it’s not a costume and therefore feels new and different. The contrast with her youth is what, I suspect, makes it work (in my opinion). It’s busy, but in an interesting way.

In contrast, Han Go-eun‘s (Great Family, which is upcoming) dress is busy, but NOT in an interesting way. Glittery, ruffly, tacky!

Hwang Jung Min should have won something cause he made that drama watchable, but i'm glad Ji Jin Hee won cause his facial expressions and mannerisms were unique. i like Goo Hye Sun but she really disappointed me with her outfit, WTF. Kim Tae Hee is pretty & probably works hard but even the promo pictures of her holding a gun didn't look believable. she didn't look tough but fragile. i only saw a few eps of Iris and LBH was great & i guess KSY. do they get a heads up if they win?

I can't stand to watch Gu Hye-sun anywhere, and aslo I've skipped most parts of BBF because of her! I really can't understand how people find her beautiful and successful. I've watched the award and again I really hated her- especially her dress!

the other coment is about YEH, while watching my fair lady I aslo followed the criticisms about YEH but I couldn't understand why people were too harsh to her because in that drama the most important lacking part was the mistakes about the creen continuity (in my opinion). actors and actresses were not so bad.
to give only best couple to her was a bit pathetic
I really really love YEH!!
KBS Drama Awards was completely IRIS' and Lee Byung-heon's show!!

I'm one of those people who think that Gu Hye-sun is both beautiful and talented, and it's cool that she won three awards from KBS. A lot of people only saw her in BBF, hated her portrayal of Jan-di, panned her for it, and declared her a terrible actress. I respect their opinions, but wish they'd seen her in her other projects. She had the leading role in Hearts of Nineteen, a successful drama that ran for 167 30(ish) minute episodes. Imho, she was flat out amazing in it, and showed her considerable acting chops. I agree that BBF did not showcase her best work, at all, but I still believe that at least part of her poor Jan-di was due to poor writing and directing. Her role wasn't the only one in the drama that underscored those problems.

I completely agree that her decision to wear her BBF(like?) school uniform to the awards ceremony was A REALLY BAD ONE. A night where celebrities should look elegant, formal, and beautiful, and she looked like she forgot what event she was appearing at. I've read that she's been known to wear questionable dresses/outfits to formal events...but her wearing the school uniform makes me wonder if she wasn't sending a message...?

Depending on which of the three pics that were posted of Yoon Eun Hye, I'm not sure if I can agree, JB. In the first pic, she definitely looks like she decided to go adventuresome with her gown(and shoes) of choice. But, the second pic looks okay, and with the third pic I'd have to say that she looked absolutely gorgeous. Her face is radiant with beauty, her hair looks fabulous, and her gown looks like a very classic backless number. And, is it okay for me to say that I think she has a beautiful back? I know that it's the same gown in all three shots, but the different camera angles almost make them look like different gowns.
I agree with the other commenter who said that YEH looks sooo much better without her MFL red hair(that so did not look good!).

there's no question that Gu Hye-sun is sending a message; just not sure what it is. ^^ She is a beautiful woman ~~ i've seen her in some cosmetic ads in Seoul where she's stunning. but i think she likes to be different, and that's cool. Many actors like to go against type. I'm thinking of Diane Keaton in the states, who always wear a man's suit or tuxedo to such events. and everyone criticizes her. They should stop already- that's her look.

Im sorry, not to offend any Koreans, but it seems some of these awards are fake.

If in fact LBH had his award “in hand” even before IRIS could air, (due to his high status as an actor) then what’s the point of other actor’s efforts? Although I love LBH, (he is one of the reasons why I started liking Asian films) I feel bad for other actors that are very talented, and didn’t stand a chance… :(
Im not saying LBH didn’t deserve it, I’m just saying its no fair competition.

Plus, KTH???? How come she gets the award instead of KSY? This confirms, totally, that the awards are kinda fake… too bad. Just like the Oscars, sometimes the Oscars are not well deserved, but…. I guess that’s the way the cookie crumbles. BTW KTH’s dress was pretty but others looked way more elegant than her. I don’t know what’s the big deal with this lady, really.

Aside from all that, I’m happy LBH won and that Sohn Hyun-joo won as well, he is a great actor, well deserved. Also, Oh Man-suk… hurray!!! I love Oh Man-suk.

Anyway, not really know who GHS is before BOF, nothing in English portal site talking about her acting talent, or maybe there was, but not under my radar.

Btw, all ladies look beautiful to me, but for sure some not deserve the awards, u dont have to have IQ above 100 to understand it.

i appreciate kth for not pulling off her normal cutesy-but-she's-way-too-old-for-this look, BUT if her hemline was any shorter...we would have just seen black bars/pixelation for the entire show. Please, the appropriate hemline for places other than the beach is 3in above knees and no more

Being a fan of GHS, I was also shocked when I saw her in the red carpet dressed as Geum Jan Di. But after awhile I realized that it must be her way of paying homage to the character. Fine, fine, it may not be the proper event to do that, but still I admire her for her guts.

She is such a talented actress and she deserves all the awards she received.

Although Kim So Yeon not recieve "Top Excellent Awards" from KBS but she is The Top Excellent as well as Lee Byung Heon , also best couple "Kim Hyun Joon & Kim Sun Hwa" for most IRIS viewer .....

IRIS is one of her master piece same as AAE 9 years ago . Hope this is a golden chance of her career. She is one of the best K-actress but lack opportunity to be a leader actors . Anyway I believe her best performance in IRIS let her to be a MAIN ACTRESS in her new drama project (also hope she is offered a nice charecter which suitable with her (strong , brave or arrogant woman) like "Kim Sun Hwa" in IRIS

Lee Byung-Heon is just ALL-MALE! My gosh, just hearing his voice during his accepatance spiels really juices me up!
I am very ecstatic that all my guys were recognized --- Lee Byung-Heon, Lee Min-Ho, Ji Jin-Hee, Jo Joon-Ho and Kim Seung-Woo.
And hurray for Chae Si-ra...glamorous as ever. But Gu Hye-sun... isn't she kinda retarded in her attire. What was she thinking---then again, she wastn't thinking.

some awards were not given to the right persons but I don't care that much about these station awards, can't wait for the Beaksang, at least the judges watched the films before giving recognition
btw since these stations had decided to hold even such huge award, should them include some "Drama of the year" or "Best drama", it would be better

Looking over these pics, one more time, two thoughts came to mind:

1) I don't like the cut-outs in Lee Da-hae's gown, either...but, man, she still looks stunning, doesn't she? She totally pulls it off...and she still has one of the most beautiful faces you'll ever see.

2) Moon Chae-won...wow. For me, of these pics, she is the epitome of beauty, grace, and elegance. Her gown is gorgeous, and so is she in it. From head to toe, she embodies how every actress should look at formal events such as this. Wow.

What a disappointment! Kim So Yeon really Rocked in IRIS...but where is her award? Can't believe it went to Kim Tae Hee, she did not deserve it and she knows it. Kim Tae Hee looked really horrible on the awards night!

Kim Ah-joong deserved the award more than the other nominees. I'm just disappointed that Hwang Jung-min didn't win any. He showed class A acting in That Fool.

I was so disappointed that kim so yeon did not win excellence award.I was hoping that she will win instead of kim tae hee..But kim so yeon is nominated for the excellence award..but why she couldnt win?But since she is nominated..that really means that KBS noticed her outstanding perfomance in iris..but KBs has to give to kim tae hee because she is the main leading actress in iris..so if kbs gives it to kim so yeon..then it would be mean to kim tae hee..but well ..wait for baeksang awards..and i also hope that yoon eun hye can win excellence award for lady castle as kang hye na because she didi a good job too..but if compared to kim so yeon..kim so yeon is better...

In terms of dressing,....I dont quite like kim tae hee's dress..and what is go hye sun wearing????A schoolgirl uniform????And chae si ra looked great that night!!!Lee da hae too...+kim so yeon..too

Most of time, KSY has the stone face & look down to the floor. What is wrong with the floor ? The scene when Sunhwa leaves South Korea, KSY just put natural eye drops to her eyes. Any actress can does that.

Perhaps, some may feel pity for Sun Hwa because she does not get the love although she does everything & even lies to get it. (Sun Hwa makes Hun-jun, Seeing hee thought their lover was died). The feeling for Sun Hwa can be mis-interpreted to that KSY’s acting is good.

I am not a fan of any Korean actor, actress. Objectively, Kim Tae Hee successfully portrays many different emotions, situations & her acting is really BETTER than KSY. Kim Tae Hee deserves the award of acting.

Hm... I think Kim Tae Hee is more popular than KSY, how could KSY gets award of popularity ???. Ofcourse, Kim Tae Hee is far more beautiful, elegant than KSY.
Acting of LBH is so great.

Iris is so great. It is really the best Korean drama of years. Frankly, LBH’s acting is so great. I have to say that Kim Tae Hee’s acting is far more better than KSY.
In Iris, Kim Tae Hee’s acting is excellent & has the big progress from the past, and I think her acting in "Love story in Hardvard" is also good.

KTH is so beautiful with this elegant, sexy dress. She has new young style.

I agree KTH is more popular than KSY, how could KSY receive the award of the popular actress ?????? KTH must also get the award of popularity.

I totally agree with KDfan.. regarding people's comments on GHS's dress..It is not the outer appearance that we judge. It is more on the talents and acting skills. Or probably she was just reminiscing her sweet moments in BoF.. Whatever it is.. GHS won the award and who are we to criticize her??

"How could Kim So Yun’s acting is better that Kim Tae Hee when all KSY portrayed was sad, and gloomy face since her love was not reciprocated by Hun Joon - I don’t remember her ever laugh or smile at all - I’m not a fan of anybody but I appreciate good acting if I see one - Kim Tae Hee indeed delivered a good performance in Iris- and her acting had improved tremendously - why can anybody see that, she received a lot criticism in the past that they tend to stereotype her acting to the point of being prejudiced - when in in-fact she getting better on her craft - I feel sorry for her - for all these uncalled criticism - give a girl a break - will yuh !!!.

LBH is so GREAT. I have to say Kim Tae Hee's acting is excellent, better than KSY.
Acting of KSY is plain throughout drama. KSY sad face always looks down & sometimes, she has eye drops in her eyes. That is all of her acting. Any actress can do it.

Between KSY & Gu Hye-sun, who acts better ???

Iris is really the best Korean drama that I have seen so far. Congratulation to Iris team.

Kim Tae Hee acting is so-so..Obviously,Kim so yeon 's acting is faR MUCH BETTER INi IRIS...But..Honestly,when I recap back the scenes,I think Ki mso Yeon has more screentime than kim tae Hee.and it seems that Kim so yeon and lee byung hyun have better chemistry and they often team up together in action scenes.On the other hand,kim tae hee only seems to be with lee byung hyun in the beginning and near the end of the series.KSY has more action scenes than KTH

In terms of action scenes:KSY>KTH
In terms of expression:KSY=KTH
In terms of emotions:KSY>KTH
In terms of Romance:KTH>KSY(KTH seems to be more romantic (apparently)than KSY)

1) There are thousands of way to express the sadness, but with KSY, she has only 1 way to express, her stone face just look down to the ground most of the time, and few times she has eye drops in the eyes such as at the scence she left South Korea. It is so boring. KSY's acting is monotone & plain throughout drama. I do not know what she find on the ground when she always look down. Any actress can do it.

2) I saw this note from other website "Kim Tae and Lee Byung Hun’s character – just a look and it conveys a thousand words even in the midst of danger just a glance and it says it all - the love they have with each other - one particular scene that really warm me is the downtown shoot out – when Seung Hee appeared – no need of a dialogue – just a look and it says it all."
The expression of KTH is excellent.

3) Great Acting must convey the feeling to audience, not just the movement of arms & legs. In action scence, KSY just shows her arms & legs but not conveys any feeling.
Contrary, when KTH struggles with terrorist, I was touched. My heart beats rapidly. That scence is so exciting.

4) Romantic scence: bed scene, kissing, sadness, etc.... are very touchy. KTH's actings are really great. I love her romantic scenes so much.

Conclusion: Kim Tae Hee successfully portrays many different emotions throughout the drama. I am not her fan, but I have to say Kim Tae Hee deserves the award of acting. She is GREAT, suitable for her role (professional, determined, soft, beautiful, etc....).

In all terms, action to romantic scences, expressions & emotions, Kim Tae Hee is all BETTER than KSY.

5) Final episode, Seung Hee is smart. When she shot terrorist she also alert about the plot. Doing this way, Iris does not know she destroy Iris' plot (to kill persident).

It is low level & premature when saying KSY's acting is better than KTH.

KSY & Gu Hye-sun, who acts better ? I do not care.

I have read about this topic on other websites too..Many people support KSY but there are also many people support KTH..

In my opinion..

Good Acting:LBH,KSW,KSY
Poor Acting:KTH

KTH got the excellence award ..Why?because other casts such as KSY and LBH brightens the drama..So..KBS has to give the excellence award to the main actress..It is only to please KTH..I know she can act well but not in Iris..She really can act well but in love story such as love story in harvard ..etc..BUT NOT in ACTION DRAMA LIKE IRIS..On the other hand,KSY can act well in action,spy drama..and the same goes to KSY..If she is given a role in romantic love drama..I doubt her ability to act well as KTH..Honestly speaking,KSY has better performance in iris than KTH..It is a fact ..KSY is robbed..KSY should be recognised for her acting while KTH should get the popularity award..

Oh my God, how can KSY acts better than KTH ? To get the award, one needs something special, new. KSY just has the gloomy face throughout the drama. She does not know how to express the sadness the different ways.
Compare to Gu Hye-sun, KSY is still boring.

Kim Tae Hee is far more popular, more beautiful & she acts BETTER than KSY.

Frankly, all actors, actresses in Iris try their best & they all receive the award. Be happy!
Anyway, it is clear that KTH is better than KSY. KSY is seeking something on the floor most of time with the eyes looking down, so BORING.
