BOF introduces newcomer Kim Soo-hyun

Kim Soo-hyun is a pretty new face in the biz, but the 21-year-old actor has already grabbed viewers’ attention with two recent back-to-back performances (in Will It Snow For Christmas and the short special drama Father’s House) that earned him a wave of praise. A few days ago, his official homepage (http://www.bofkorea.com/kimsoohyun) was opened to the public and these new photos released by his management company, BOF. (I’m so used to seeing him broody that it’s wonderful to see him looking happy for once!)

Although his two recent roles only amounted to four episodes of airtime total, Kim Soo-hyun made quite an impression in what could have been forgettable parts. Instead, Kim showed emotive intensity and a strong rapport with the camera that marks him as one to watch.

I really enjoyed his performance as young Cha Kang-jin. The transition between younger and older Kang-jin was really smooth and he and Go Soo were able to portray the same kind of quite emotions. Hope to see more things from him.

I agree! He did such a great acting with the younger version of Cha Kang Jin.
Gosh, the emotions he was showing! And to think he only had four episode to show for.. I'm even more impressed!

I cant wait to see him in future dramas!

I read the title and immediately thought, "BOF?! Boys Over Flowers is over!" Then I remembered that a) Dramabeans uses "Boys Before Flowers" and b) if it were to have a sequel, all k-drama blogs would be swamped with the news.

I agree that it's nice to see him looking so happy! He did a great job as the younger Kang Jin and I thought that the shift from teen to adult Kang Jin was seamless - both Kim Soo-hyun and Go Soo were able to hit all of the right emotions and expressions, and the essense of the character remained the same, which I unfortunately can't say for Han Ye-seul's portrayal of the older Ji-wan. I can't believe he's only 22! He looks younger, but he acts like an experienced actor.

agreed! he was amazing in "will it snow for christmas?" and made episodes 1 and 2 my favorite episodes in the entire drama [aside from episode 10]. he definitely has the whole "speaking with his eyes" thing down. i look forward to what he has to offer in the future and i think that he still has a lot of time to grow and improve as an actor.

I never usually say this, but if no one's claimed him yet... OMG MINE!!!!

...He is a lovely lovely boy (I agree with everyone else up there who said he made WISFC work for the first couple of episodes - I remember tuning in ESPECIALLY to see him!).

I loved him in Will it Snow for Christmas, and thought he was particularly striking in the scene at the police station after he lost the pendant his father gave him, where he broke down and cried with anguish. Boy's a good cryer, and looks good doing it. @_@

I also looked him up on Youtube and found that he's hosted Sonyeo Sonyeon Gayo Baekso, and discovered that he has a different image in all of the work that he did... I expect him to go far with his versatility. :D

Ah I love this guy!
I was so used to seeing him brooding in those 2 dramas that it was a pleasant surprise watching YT clips of when he was on SSGB and he can be such a funny dork.

Aww he's smiling. How cute. Yay and he's older than me. Damn he's got a really boyish face though. I really look forward to seeing him in more roles--hopefully longer than the span of two episodes--he did such a good job in Will it Snow for Christmas and I'm positive he did a good job Father's House although I haven't seen it.

He really is very cute and very talented. It says a lot about his performance in WISFC that so many people wished there were more episodes featuring the younger actors, even after Goo Soo showed up. I loved the later scene between him and Song Joong-ki...wouldn't it be interesting to see both of them in their own drama together?

I'd forgotten about Father's House, this is a great reminder. Thanks JB!

@THH, i was JUST about to say that!

At first, I thought it WAS Key but then this guy is a little softer looking - Key has a bit more attitude to him that comes out in his looks.

@8 anjell It's the first time I've been so quick but I thought I'd better jump in the waters first before someone else does! Everyone else (that I'm really fond of) has been claimed already on Dramabeans!

Besides, I really do enjoy his acting - he impressed me a lot in WISFC, and reminds me a little of Jang Geun Seok (acting-wise), so I think he'll go far in the future. Now, all I have to do is sit back on my haunches and watch how far he'll go and then gleefully tell everyone, MINE! LOL.

...also, now that y'all mention it, he DOES look kinda like Key from SHINee...which may explain my immediate taking towards him, since Key is one of my favourite celebrities from the younger generation. Hm. Oh well, whatever works.

(And yeah, I had the same reaction as everyone else to BOF, I thought, WHAT, this again??! Before I realised it was the management company haha.)

BOF is Bae Yong Joon's management co. which he started and many other actors have followed by going independent too.

Oh boy, it's good to see your smiling happy face <33

He was amazing in WISFXmas (so was young Ji-wan/Nam Ji-hyun) ), and it's true that I wished more for him after 2 episodes.

He reminds me of Kim Kang-woo (Story of a Man) though.

EDIT
Oops, just read back the comments above.
#19 dorayaki :) agree, he's a young Kim Kang-woo.

@Anna

You're too late! rainerust beat you to it. :)

A slightly unrelated question: Is Go Soo going by his real name? If so, then is "Soo" his first name and "Go" the last name? I'm Korean, but I find the first name "Soo" a bit weird lol. Same with Hyun Bin (which is a stage name) - would his first name be "Bin" and last name "Hyun" legally?

Go Soo is his real name.

Stage names generally fall into two categories. (1) Some people take a new name if their real names are very common, or are shared by someone famous, or sound old-fashioned. These follow traditional naming patterns with Surname + Name (Shin Hye-sung, Han Ye-seul, Han Chae-young) and therefore you can separate out the last name and call them by their first name as "Hye-sung-sshi," "Chae-young unni," etc.

(2) The second type of stage name is like Hyun Bin, Jae Hee. These names are not supposed to be Surname + Name, so you wouldn't separate Jae Hee to call him "Hee oppa." Rather, you just always use the full stage name: "Jae Hee oppa." You wouldn't separate Ma Donna or Ri Hanna, in the same way that you wouldn't separate Hyun and Bin.

Ah, I see. Thanks for your explanation, Javabeans! When I asked my mom, she told me that Hyun Bin was an indivisible name, but I wasn't sure exactly how that worked, so your comparisons to Madonna/Rihanna helped. So would you call Go Soo "Go Soo oppa" (hehe I love saying that!) or "Soo oppa", if you were speaking to him directly? I've never heard of the first name "Soo" so even though it's not a stage name, I'm curious if that's what his family would actually call him. I've heard of one-syllable names, like "Shin" and "Yul" from Goong, but "Soo" just sounds different.

Haha, too late, he's MINE first! ;) Don't worry, I can share the love though. It was pure luck I happened to be checking into JB when this post came up (then again, considering how often I refresh this page, perhaps it wasn't all that lucky).

@bluegummibear

...Please do not continue depressing me with news of how young you truly are, since I've left those (good old) times years ago...! Fortunately for me, there are other actors I really like that aren't too young for me *coughGoSoocough*

When I first saw him on SSGB (the part where he gets pranked) I found him totally bland (and I thought he looked like Choi Si Won). But after WISC I went back and watched those clips again and now I ship him and Han Seung Yeon. So to all those calling dibs on him - his hers first!

lol. That sounded so childish...

I was really hoping to see him across MGY. *sigh* next year maybe?
