Chae Rim and Choi Siwon in Oh My Lady

This kind of seems like an odd pairing, but perhaps the story will carry it: Chae Rim (Dal Ja’s Spring) and Super Junior’s Choi Siwon have been cast as the leads in SBS’s new drama Oh My Lady.

Chae Rim plays an ordinary housewife who becomes the manager of a top star in this romantic comedy series. Her character is a spunky 35-year-old ajumma who takes the job to earn money so she can take back her young child, who is in the care of her husband. Choi’s character is a prickly actor who finds himself in an absurd living situation with Chae Rim, but then falls for her. Directing is Family Honor‘s Park Young-soo, and the drama begins filming in early February.

Although I raised my eyebrows at first glance, the more I mull it over, the more I can see this happening. Chae Rim is a bright actress who can do both comedy and drama, and although I have been largely unimpressed by idol-stars-turned-actors, I thought Choi Siwon was thoroughly adorable (and showed decent comic timing) in the sageuk comedy Story of Hyang Dan. I can already picture him pulling off the spoiled actor role in an updated sort of Full House meets Last Scandal.

Their real-life age difference is 8 years; by the time the drama airs, Chae Rim will have newly turned 31 and Choi Siwon will have turned 23. That’s not too different from the age difference in Dal Ja’s Spring, and with all the ’81 and now ’82 actors heading off to military service, I think we’ll be seeing more of these older-women/younger-men romances. It may become an overused plot point, but what else can you do when all your top actors are suddenly in the early-twenties generation? You can either pretend they’re older, or roll with it.

Oh My Lady will take over the timeslot from current series Wish Upon a Star starting in March, which indicates two things: (1) SBS is sticking with its 9pm Monday-Tuesday experiment, and (2) this will probably have a similarly light, funny tone.

@Sonam 44

Who? Ethan Ruan? LOL. They look alike in some angle.

Anyway, so excited since Chae Rim is soooo low key when she doesn't have a drama. Good thing there's news already. I just hope that she chose well.

I really want to see how they would look like together. :D

The list of dramas I'm looking forward to keeps getting longer...can't wait!

I first saw Siwon in Spring Waltz and then in Hyang Dan. He's pretty good for a "singer-turn-actor* so I'm not too worried. I hope has good chemistry with Chae Rim though.

Ahjumma again Chae-Rim? I loved her in Dal Ja's Spring (minus the horrific make-up) though so I'll give this a try :D

I am excited for this one, I will watch it for SIWON! May -December (cougar romances seem to be the IN thing in Kdrama land these days.) I hope it's going to be a fun one!

Can we at least hope for a shower scene? We need to see his body don't you think?

I don't quite consider Chae Rim an ajumma but maybe the stylists will give her that same hair style she sported in Dal Ja's spring. If she's able to bring out the same kind of adorable but not in a cutesy SNSD sort of way that Dal Ja was then I may enjoy this drama. I thought Choi Siwon was enjoyable in Hyang Dang. I'm sure he will have no problem playing the spoiled actor. Hopefully, there will be great chemistry between the two. Might be a show I'll have to keep my eye out for.

Oh Samsooki, I agree!

Just reading about this drama makes me queasy. I loved Chae Rim in Dal Ja's Spring, but for me this drama has three strikes against it:

1. Idol actor. Sorry, but even the good idols-turned-actors only seem able to pull out one good performance for every three. I want my actors to be actors. The thought of Chae Rim getting hate mail because the script says she has to hold this guy's hand just raises my blood pressure. And idols don't know how to kiss, that I've seen; I'm thinking it is the sheltered lifestyle. They all need to take pointers from Cha Seung Won.
2. Does she always have to go after the younger guy? You guys are right, 2010 is cougar town. I'm tired of it already.
3. The plot contains terrible echoes of Good Job, Good Job. I saw enough sobbing and screaming over child custody in that show to last me a lifetime.

I will stay far, far away from this one - there's too many good dramas out there.

Oh yah almost forgotten that Siwon acted in 18 Vs. 29, Spring Waltz and Hyang Dan. Got to know about him in 18 vs. 29 first before knowing that he was a member of SUJU. I wanted him to have more parts on that drama because he was just too cute and handsome. Then came Spring Waltz, but his role was sooooo small. Thank god for Hyang Dan where he's the main lead and had really good chemistry with the girl.

Chae Rim is an ok actress for me. Dal Ja's Spring didn't really impress me much since I'm not a fan of the older female and younger male vibe between her and Lee Min Ki. Aahh I guess I couldn't see the chemistry. I've heard that Dal Ja's Spring was like a remake of a Japanese drama called Anego so maybe I kept comparing the two and loved the Anego pairing (Shinohara Ryoko with Akanishi Jin) more.

Hoping that Siwon and Chae Rim does have chemistry along with a well made script.

Ok the Suju fan in me is very excited...

Oh, Siwon is so cute in Legend of Hyang dan... I am so happy he is going back into drama...

It seems it will be more Last Scandal than Full House, given the housewife factor... coz Full House was just oodles of cute with Song Hye-kyo...

Can't wait to see this!!!

I'm becoming increasingly alarmed at the number of idols-turned-actors taking on leading roles. I mean, we have Choi Si Won here (he has experience, but still), Changmin, Taecyeon and Yunho not long ago. Are Korean dramas heading in the direction of Taiwanese dramas where the entire cast is comprised of idols? And even if that is the trend at the moment, why are only the male idols getting the love? Why isn't Kwon Yuri, Kim Taeyeon, Koo hara, and err...Ahn So Hee getting cast as leads in dramas? I know UEE from After School has been in a couple of dramas last year but not as lead.

I wonder why the producers keep trying to picture Chae Rim as a lot older woman. She has the cutest face I've seen and definitely looks younger than her real age (not that she's old, she's only a little over 30 anyway). I'm a lot younger than her and don't look remotely as good or as young :(

I think she'll be okay playing younger role (like 25 or 27-ish) because if that what an ajumma looks like, I'll start to really really hate my self :)

Choi Siwon also had a pretty meaty supporting role in Andy Lau's movie, "A Battle of Wits" last 2006. He stopped acting regularly once Super Junior became a permanent group instead of a project group. He was supposed to in 2008's "Pure Comic Strip" with Yoo Ji Tae and Lee Yeon Hee but he declined because of SJ-M activities in China.

Hopefully this means, he returns back to acting full-time since it's such a waste whenever he rejects acting projects for SJ, not that I don't appreciate his loyalty to the group...

@skelly:

i kinda think siwon has been quite solid as an actor. all the stuff he has acted in has shown him to have an edge for acting.

I remember him in the ariel lin's MV where his acting was as natural as it can be. the nuance in his eyes when he was smiley and then turned into surprised yet sad look...

LOL. Though I do agree with you in some ways. actors remain as actors, singers as singers. . . but then again, siwon can't really sing though. he acts and models better than his serenading skills. XD

Siwon is one of my fave suju member and Chae Rim charmed me in Dalja's spring. If she is an example of an ajumma then I wouldn't mind being one (I still have several years before that happens though LOL). The plot appeals to me since I've always been attracted to younger guys (creepy noona on the loose). Siwon has always shown some solid acting chops out of the idol-turned-actor bunch. He has the best facial expressions ever! Definitely looking forward to this.

Oh please.... Not again. Where in the world are the older actors? It's definitely the year of cougars. Even though all of them (KB, LMH, Taec, SiWon) are all younger than me, but if this new trend keeps on going til the end of the year, I think I'm gonna withdrawal for awhile from watching this kind of kdrama. this whole may-december love is already overdosed. and I'm tired of it. I guess I'm still the oppa-dongsaeng/same age love story shipper :p

anyway, I might gonna watch this.. coz Si Won doesn't look like in his early 20s I think. and Chae Rim also doesn't look like an old woman.

Haha... but Y.O.U was released last year... XD well...
Nunna love is a trend which started way before. Actually, I haven't seen a lot of drama with a 8year old gap love (guy older). Anyway... Siwon acting hasn't bothered me in 18vs29 but it was just because he was so eye candy that I didn't care about it : all his acting is about eyebrows haha...
Beware.. idols are invading once more dramas and I hope quality won't suffer but still I have to admit that I don't like it and... Taiwanese dramas are just so dumb in some ways ... (Magicians of Love...)

I love Chae Rim in Dal ja Spring and even more so after watching Warriors of the Yang Clan (2004). I've also seen several other of her dramas. Very talented and one of my favorite actresses.

Only seen Si won in one drama (18 vs 19). He's not bad...gotta admit he's good looking.

I don't mind the older woman-younger man relationship or vice versa as long as the drama's unhealthily addictive like My Name is Kim Sam-Soon or Kimi Wa Petto. It's not like this theme is overused compared to the common similar-age pairings.

The fact that she is older makes it seem more sexy, I mean hello Older women want action too, so why is it ok for older men to have all the fun? But I just wish they would be more strong minded sometimes the theme is a helpless girl get smitten by a guy who will make everything ok. Some younger fans think it's not right or it just dont look good that a woman in her 30 should be dating a younger man, because in they're eyes 30's is old...which is not the case!

Haha, I'm only at Episode 1 where Siwon revealed his shining abs *YUMILICIOUS* and I've not even hopped on to Episode 2 due to hectic schedule. =/
And the same goes for Personal Preference!
But I'm sooo gonna watch this (and Personal Preference), at least to complete Episode 2 (or 3) so from there I can decide which drama is (more) worth watching!
But it's sooo funny (or is the 'now trend'?) that young and aspiring actors are paired up with ajummas (aunties), and they are REEEALLY young, incoming actors who surprisingly snatches (okay, GIVEN) the role as the main instead of the second male lead who inevitably has more experience (but loses in looks).
I guess it's the 'in thing' now anyway, after Boys Over Flowers I reckon that directors understand that half (or more) of the reason why your drama will be a huge hit (aside from the storyline) is to bring in HOT (and young *grins*) actors.
Okay, I'm typing a little too much now so, goodbye I'd go catch these two dramas I've mentioned above and you should too!
**Fangirl mode: Aww, BOF and SuJu... <3**
Alright snap out of it. -_-
BYE!

I watched this drama because of Chae Rim. I'm one of her fans. I don't care if she is 6 or 7 years older than Si Won in this series, as long as she delivers and carries it well. They had chemistry. I love this this drama so much. I love Chae Rim and Si Won. It is a good thing that they fall in love with each other and ended up together. Great storyline and great ending. I hope to see both of them do another drama series in the future. I love you both guys. Take care and god bless!
