Cinderella, Prosecutor, Taste: First episode impressions

Finally! The new Wednesday-Thursday battle is off, and the results are pretty consistent with my expectations, both content- and ratings-wise.

First, the numbers: Cinderella’s Sister took the lead with a 16.7%, while Personal Taste was in second with a 12.7%. Prosecutor Princess trailed with a 7.3%. (Those are TNS Media numbers; AGB Nielsen gave the numbers as 15.8%, 12.8%, and 8.0%.)

I think it’s likely this trend will hold. After seeing all first episodes, I think it’s also an accurate reflection (for once!) on the relative quality of the shows. Each series had strengths and weaknesses, but this time I have a clear picture of which ones I prefer and why.

On to the reviews! (To the spoiler-phobes: I have avoided giving away any big plot points that aren’t already known.)

CINDERELLA’S SISTER (KBS)

In my latest Oh My Lady recap, I mentioned the issue of a drama making an emotional connection with the viewer, and how Oh My Lady has been slow to build that rapport. In contrast, Cinderella’s Sister is very good about establishing that connection right away, and I felt myself drawn from the start.

Tonally, the first episode wasn’t angsty or tragic, and was surprisingly light. Not light in a fluffy way, but in a way that is humorous and heartfelt. (I suspect that the drama will grow heavier later, but am thankful it starts briskly.) I feel confident saying that of the three Wednesday premieres, this was the strongest first episode and while none of them sucked, it was a pretty obvious first-place. The pacing is assured, the scenery beautiful. The acting is outstanding, not just from the leads but everyone. (That would be Moon Geun-young, Seo Woo, Chun Jung-myung, Lee Mi-sook, and Kim Gab-soo. Taecyeon is not in this episode.)

Without giving away too many plot points, the gist of the story is this: Eun-jo (Moon Geun-young), somewhere in her mid-teens, is the daughter to a woman who keeps shacking up with horrible men — drinkers, beaters, lowlifes. Mom Kang-sook (Lee Mi-sook) goes from one man to another, and Eun-jo bears this stoically although she’s sick of living like this. Hyo-sun (Seo Woo) is a bright, lovable girl whose father owns a makgulli (rice wine) company. Meeting Kang-sook stirs her longing for a mother figure, and Hyo-sun does her best to push Kang-sook toward her father. Ki-hoon (Chun Jung-myung) is a good-natured employee of the makgulli company and a caring, mature older brother figure to Hyo-sun, who adores him. Though his interaction with Eun-jo is brief, he’s the only person who’s able to get through Eun-jo’s tough outer shell.

Moon Geun-young as Eun-jo is the main draw by far, and she does her cynical, hurt, defensive role well. She makes Eun-jo relatable and unique, and acts with convincing intensity. I love Chun Jung-myung so I’m thrilled merely to see him back onscreen again, but I’ll admit he doesn’t have much to do in this episode. However, his gentle, smiling presence in itself gives his character a warm aura. I am keen to see how their relationship unfolds, and by keen I mean VERY. I’m invested already.

That said, I think Seo Woo is almost as strong as Moon Geun-young. Yes, she most certainly overacts as the young schoolgirl. I suspect some viewers will find it annoying. As in Tamra the Island, I find Seo Woo’s girlish exaggerations cute rather than contrived, because they seem genuine to the actress herself, and not put-upon to force cutesiness. I am also being a little lenient because she’s playing a young teen, and will revise my opinion if she doesn’t grow out of it later. All that said, it’s the crying scene where she really stands out, and she makes Hyo-sun’s tears not only sympathetic but entirely believable. I was impressed.

Kim Gab-soo is excellent as the quiet, withdrawn father. You won’t find a trace of his creepy villain (Hon, Partner, Tazza) in this character, who is alternately gruff and vulnerable. Lee Mi-sook is the perfect stepmother to Cinderella, and she plays Kang-sook with layers of complexity. In fact, everyone plays their characters with layers, which is why I have a good feeling about this drama. It’s not simply reversing the Cinderella fairy tale, it’s subverting all the relationships and creating something new with them. I find that really compelling.

PROSECUTOR PRINCESS (SBS)

The basic plot features Ma Hye-ri (Kim So-yeon) as a fashion-loving prosecutor who is the latest addition in the public prosecutor’s office. With her love of stylish clothing and extravagant shoes (and jewelry, and handbags), she stands out in the low-key, no-nonsense office, and not in a good way. It’s no surprise, then, that Episode 1’s plot largely centers around a pair of fabulous shoes.

As the daughter of a prosecutor, she has made it through school at his prodding, and thinks she’s finally free of all that hard work. Of course, we know her hard work is just about to start. Her first encounter with a case shows us that what she’s lacking isn’t a brain — she’s plenty smart, and she knows the law — but a compassion and connection to her cases. The law is cut-and-dried to her, and developing an attachment to her cases on a basic human level will probably figure largely in her growth.

The big lure here is certainly Kim So-yeon, whose take on frivolous Ma Hye-ri is bubbly and entertaining. I am not by any means comparing her acting to Mi-shil in Queen Seon-deok, but both roles gave me a similar sense of watching a skilled actress diving into a character with gusto and enjoying playing around. Kim has altered her intonation and speech patterns and completely changed her image, and it’s particular fun to watch her because it was only a few months ago that she was so tough and fierce in IRIS.

This is essentially Legally Blonde set in a public prosecutor’s office, and I think the similarities are pretty deliberate, down to Hye-ri’s offbeat candidness, overaccessorization, and near-garish fashion sense. For some reason it doesn’t feel like a total copycat to me, though, and I wonder if maybe the cultural differences are enough to set it apart.

Where Prosecutor Princess falters is in that everything feels just a little too familiar. I’m always looking for a drama to show that one flash of inventiveness, a twist on a trope, or a jolt of new energy — it doesn’t have to be completely new, but there’s got to be something that feels different. I don’t get that feeling from Prosecutor Princess.

The characters and plot setup are straightforward thus far. They’re aiming to give Park Shi-hoo‘s character a tinge of mystery, and to their credit they achieve that, since I’m curious to know what his deal is. But that’s a purely intellectual curiosity, not an emotional one. Neither he nor Han Jung-soo‘s serious prosecutor character have been explained much, but I don’t find that I’m very interested. They haven’t really broken through to give their characters life, and I thought Han Jung-soo was stiff.

There’s a yet-unexplained subplot regarding a case Han Jung-soo has been following for three years, but like with many dramas with a legal (or business) angle, the pace drags when we linger on the case. Partner lost me with its dry legal storylines despite the chemistry between the leads; I fear the same may happen with Prosecutor Princess. (At least this drama is working in an additional angle with Hye-ri’s professional and personal growth, which may save it.)

Based on the first episode, my prediction is that Prosecutor Princess will have a small but loyal following. It’s not bad, it’s just in a tough timeslot — I think those who want something more substantial will gravitate toward Cinderella’s Sister, while those who want a light romantic comedy may be more drawn to the zippier Personal Taste. I’ve been wrong before, but that’s my gut feeling.

PERSONAL TASTE (MBC)

I said that Cinderella’s Sister had the best first episode, in that it’s the best-produced and most cohesive package. But Personal Taste is my pick for the most fun and laughs — it’s cute, well-cast, and has a freshness to its humor. The jokes aren’t wildly original, but they’re presented well and feel new for a kdrama. (I mean, a gay-blowjob joke on Korean television? Ha!) Also, every deviation that the drama has made from the novel has been for the better (so far).

If you’ve been following the novel posts, you’ll get the gist. If you haven’t, here’s the deal: Kae-in (Sohn Ye-jin) is an upbeat and good-hearted furniture designer, if naive and rather dense. She is badly hurt by her boyfriend, whom she believes is going to propose to her when he is in fact marrying her friend the next day.

In a series of chance encounters, she gets off on the wrong foot with Jin-ho (Lee Min-ho), an architect who works at a rival firm to her ex. She thinks he’s a pervert at first, but then gets the impression that he’s gay. Jin-ho, who considers her a clueless blunderer, doesn’t bother correcting her. In the next episode (we aren’t there yet), Kae-in agrees to let Jin-ho move in, fed up with straight guys and liking the idea of having a gay roommate. Little does she know that Jin-ho has an ulterior motive: he badly needs to win a building project, and needs to study her house in order to do so, as she is the daughter to the famed architect who built it.

Spot-on casting, for sure. Sohn Ye-jin is perfect as Kae-in, showing the character’s positive personality even as she bumbles through various encounters. She also lets a naivete and vulnerability shine through, making it easy to root for her. Everyone, from the main cast to the supporting members, has that extra spark that draws you to them and their roles. I have a feeling the sidekicks are going to be a hoot. I even like Kim Ji-suk‘s take on his character, who is nowhere near as awful as the book character; you can see he’s conflicted and remorseful. He’s just also a wuss.

Lee Min-ho may be young (he’s even younger than Im Seulong despite playing his hyung), but he wears Jin-ho’s airs perfectly. I’ll be the first to sing Lee’s praises, but I was worried that he wouldn’t be able to emerge from the Boys Before Flowers shadow — which is considerable — or live up to expectations, particularly since he’s taken over a year to choose his next project. I think he does quite nicely.

You might say that of course I like Personal Taste because I expected to like it — but I think liking the idea actually makes it harder to live up to the hype. Episode 1 is a little unstable at times and the pacing is uneven in the first half, but in the second half it starts to gel and really work. At the end of the hour, this is the drama whose second episode I wanted to see the most.

I just got through watching the first two episodes of each, and surprisingly enough, it's Prosecutor Princess that has me the most intrigued. Cinderella's Sister is next, and Personal Taste (which I was the most looking forward to) is now third.

Cinderella's Sister is admittedly the strongest where acting, story, cinematography, and all that is concerned... but I can just sense that the angst is coming, and right now, I'm in the mood for something lighter. And for some reason Personal Taste's second episode didn't manage to pull me in like its first episode did... however, the first two episodes of Prosecutor Princess were equally strong and just what I was looking for (plus, I already feel chemistry between the main couple, something I still haven't felt when it comes to Personal Taste).

I look forward to seeing if my opinion changes in the weeks to come--I really am rooting for Personal Taste to pick itself up. As always, thanks for the wonderful first-impressions!! ^_^

i already watch CS and PT 2 episode and look interesting too..but when i compared these three drama and wait a whole week for the next episode, i realized i miss PP the most rather than CS and PT...CS AND PT is the 2010 drama that i looking forward before this but now i change my mind...(seriously).....

Thanks for the recap as always. :) I've watched Personal Taste Eps 1-2 and I am satisfied with the actors and the way the story is unfolding. ;) I have to agree with you Javabeans that Lee Min Ho did a nice performance and Sohn Ye Jin is reftreshing. :) I've yet to see Cinderella's Sister because I loved Chun Jung-myung eversince I watched him in What's Up Fox?. Prosecutor Princess is also intriguing as well so I'm going to catch it after CS. All in all, Kudos to these three new dramas.

I just started watching PP and I absolutely love it for its humor. I can't wait till the next uploaded episodes. It is a bit like legally blond and confessions of a shopaholic but that is what makes it so great to watch! lols. I like both movies so this one is a winner for me!

I deliberately avoided this post until I got around to watching ALL THREE (which took forever with my schedule of course).

I can confidently say I completely agree with the ratings and of course with your assessment too. Personal Taste is just right up my alley so I'm really digging it but Cinderella is really good too.

Yay I finally watched at least the first episodes of the 3 dramas that I've been anticipating. They are CInderella's Sister, Personal Taste and Oh My Lady.

Like JavaBeans, my favorite has got to be Cinderella's Sister. Before watching the first episode, I was skeptical about whether it might be too angsty and melodramatic. It made me want to avoid the drama altogether because of the very sad music video. However, I'm so glad that the first episode ended up to be lighthearted. From the very start, I was already captured by the storytelling. Moon Geun Young keeps getting better and better and her intensity is what grabbed me the most. There's not much to EJ's character profile yet, but it seems he treats Seo Woo as a younger sister while he sort of fell in love with MGY's character right from the start. LOL. Oh and just like her character from Tamna Island, Seo Woo is so adorable!! How can someone older than me look 10 years younger?!! Never thought that Kim Gab Soo (the usual bad mysterious boss) can take up a fatherly role like he has in this drama, but his cupid struck looks sure are funny to see.

Second favorite is Personal Taste with Lee Min Ho (BOF), Son Ye Jin and Seulong (2am). LMAO whenever something "gayish" happens on the scenes. No wonder she thought he was gay!!! Haha I'm like you don't do that kind of thing in public!! I do hope Son Ye Jin's character gets a bit more less dense. I got so irritated with characters like her. Dude, if a guy doesn't contact you for months and hasn't shown up face to face isn't that time to get a wake up call and know that he's not interested. And what kind of friend would marry the dude who is still going out (if that's what she believes) with your best friend (that's how it portrayed the 3 girls relationship). I find this set up stupid and irritating. There is also Seulong whose first acting gig is alright but I can totally tell that this is his first time. His expressions is too overacting. Last, but not least is Lee Min Ho. Can I say another awesome role!! He's believable and not over the top.

Next is Oh My Lady. While I love Siwon as my favorite Super Junior member. That love is not enough to make the drama altogether great. While watching the drama, it just kept reminding me of Full House and Last Scandal, but both of those are A LOT better than this show. So far I don't find any character connections endearing or chemistry. Is it just me, but I'm really not a fan of Chae Rim. Whenever I watch a drama with her on it, I find her characters all the same and boring. That's probably why I can't feel anything for her ajumma character. Still watching this show to see how it develops, but it's not a keeper on my list. More likely a one time deal and off to trash bin (I usually burn favorite dramas to DVDRs to rewatch later on)

PP is definitely my fave too.. CS seems too dark and melodramamtic & I'm insanely disappointed with the where the storyline seems to be going.. PP is more comforting without being repetitive and funny and light without beng too shallow.. And ofcouse Park Shi Woo (Hoo am not sure :S lol) is just fab looking :D

I'm LOVING Cinderella's Sister and Prosecutor Princess!!!!! Im not liking Personal Taste! I thought it was good BUT some scenes were kinda boring and not interesting plus I don't like the female lead, her acting is kinda like Geum JanDi(BOF)... PP is very very FUN to watch! and CS im looking forward for EunJo and KiHoon romance! =).

of the 3 series, i choose Personal Taste mainly because i like its lightness and hilarious scenes, ( who needs heavy drama in this harsh reality) if only to escape and laugh for an hour and forget the problems of the day. The presence of LMH also counts since iam a fan of BOF, i can honestly say that he is better here than in BOF (and alot hotter too, if that is still possible).

However, his gentle, smiling presence in itself gives his character a warm aura. I am keen to see how their relationship unfolds, and by keen I mean VERY. I’m invested already.

I couldn't agree more. When I watched episode 3 & 4... I was in glee. The tension between them. Their relationship is cute and it's the first I encountered in a drama.

I got hooked with Personal Taste... Each episodes are exciting... I could't wait to see the next episode, but I have to wait since it is still airing in Korea... We have a same perspective as for Lee Min Ho... I heard he was offered for the main role in Bad Guy but he turned it down... He was kinda choosy... Well, he accepted the right role anyway... ^_^

At first I was more hype for Cinderella's Sister but as much as I like the casting, I find the acting from Moon a little forced and I find the chemistry way off. That when I turned my back on the drama, of course I will get to it eventually. As for now, I will wait until the drama is over so that I can FF :D Prosecutor Princess, for some reason, I cannot get through the first episode. I can't get my fingers around why I am not enjoying it. As for Personal Taste, it was a little wishy washy for me, but after watching episode 2, they made a avid fan out of me.

I like Personal Taste rather than Cinderella Sister because at first, Cinderella sister is pretty interesting, but later on, all she did was cried, cried, cried. It gets so boring that I gave up, but for Personal Taste, it's really good because it is funny and romance, but at the same time, the characters cried. not like Cinderella Sister..... It's has funny part and sad part so it makes me feel good because when you watch a movie or a drama, it has to be interesting, but at the same time, it need to have some emotional. ^.^
Thanks :P

I finished just Prosecutor Princess and might i say it was AWSOME! I only read the review of PT (taste) and watched the trailer to cs (Cinderella ) but i listened to the song but SHINEE and decided to watch PP and boy was i happy, even though it started out a little dry, the great actors and glamorous clothes kept me interested! I hate to say it but i think it tops most of the drama's i watch, and i watch A LOT OF dramas (in many languages). The show had a great mix to it, their was comedy, romance, and mystery. I would stay that this has to tie for first or second on my list, next to Full House and My Girl, because it has everything in it. I loved "you are beautiful" but i don't think it will be a drama that can attacted people many years from now like a classic can.

So what i mean is that everyone should give "Prosecutor Princess" because it will be a CLASSIC.

It's fun to look over at these three dramas now that I've seen most of them.
I completed Personal Taste and Prosecutor Princess within 2 days each. I never managed to finish Cinderella's Sister (stopped at ep 16).

It's sad to say Prosecutor Princess did not get the ratings I think it deserved, but like mentioned, it was in a tough time slot. Competing with Personal Preference is tough - especially because of all those die-hard Minho (BOF fans) fans.

Overall, as for the first ep ratings it does seem pretty correct. I remember when I first started watching Cinderella's Sister, I was captivated for the first several episodes. However, by ep 15 it was definitely dragged out, and the fact that the male lead did not interest me, I knew this drama would not score as one of the 'better' ones. MGS's acting was superb but it just wasn't enough.

Personal Taste was pretty cute. Son Yejin's acting never dissapoints - but I felt Minho's acting a bit lacking. He overall did really well, but with Son Yejin's experience, it just was not comparable. So I liked it overall <3

However, Prosecutor Princess would have to be the best for me. The overall story was good. The leading female and male were a great match. Kim So Yeon's acting was superb, and Park Shi Hoo did a great job too. That is why PP is my favorite :D Once again, sad that they did not get the ratings I feel the drama deserved, but they did have tough competition.

I would definitely recommend Prosecutor Princess - of course Park Shi Hoo's perfect character and charming acting & Kim So Yeon's gorgeous shoes, and slender perfect legs are a 'must not miss' but the story overall is good and solution near the end satisfies me :D

The last great drama I watched was Shining Inheritance - and it turns out Prosecutor Princess's director is the same as Shining Inheritance! He's good :D

i like how you recapped this!!! :) and i had the same gut feelings but then i can't really say cause i never finished CS.... it got to annoying for me although i was pretty much captured by the acting from the beginning and for the curiosity! Moon was superb as her character but then... i turned to Personal Taste instead..

i finished like episode5 of CS then went to watch Personal Taste as i wait for the vids to load and i can honestly say i was so much more attracted to the light atmosphere of PT!!! it's very cute and Son Ye Jin was soo adorable i ddint like her at first but her naturally clutsy self was soo cute! and so was Lee Min ho the hunk of course!!!!! but then it kinded drag a little where the main problem was suppose to be revealed.. but i finished it and it was overall a Great drama to watch when you have the time :)

and just finished Prosecutor Princess!!!! and i was oh sooooooooooooo in love! it's my FAVORITE ONE OF THE THREEE!! AND i'm glad it has a pretty loyal fanbase!!!.. lawyer in woo i fell in love w/ !!!!!!!!!! Ma Hye Ri's name stuck to me so therefore i wanna say it's an amazing drama!!! i love the overall storyline! very very creative!!! and heartwarming!!! :)))) the characters were all superb!!! gosh i love the chemistry in this one! :) cause they're so cute together. this is the first time i was introduced to the main lead Ma Hye Ri and she reminded me much of KimSunah which is my fave actress :) but now she's one of my faves too!!! :) PROSECUTOR'S PRINCESS IS A MUST WATCH !!!! ;))))))))) i stayed up till 4 and finished it and now i'm super sad cause it's over :( anywho give it a watch and you will see what i mean! :)

For me the order is totally different! I loved Prosecutor Princess, would recommend it anytime and re-watch it too. Cinderella's Sister was very promising, but the video that was shown everywere as trailer had nothing to do with the events in drama. It was just a video for the song. I felt a little bit cheated. And also the plot was building and building, but the way it was lead to and resolved was strange, no "climax". And I did not went above 1st episode with Personal taste, it just failed to wake up any interest in me with their clumsy and weak female lead.
