Man-deok and Man Called God make respectable premieres

Two new dramas premiered this weekend, in two vastly disparate genres: KBS had its historical production Merchant Kim Man-deok, while MBC had action-hero drama A Man Called God. Both pulled in decent first-episode numbers, the former with an 11.9%, the latter with a 15.8%. The numbers only shifted slightly for the second episodes, which brought in a respective 11.6% and a 16.7% (AGB Nielsen numbers).

Man-deok has some time to build up its viewership base with a 30-episode run, and earned positive reviews for its child actors — no surprise since promising young actress Shim Eun-kyung put in a performance as young Man-deok (later portrayed by series star Lee Mi-yeon). In addition, young actor Do Ji-hwan was also praised for his character, later to be portrayed by Han Jae-seok.

Meanwhile, Song Il-kook vehicle A Man Called God had a promising premiere, at least numbers-wise; the drama itself drew some critical reviews. On the upside, viewers recognized that it carried through the comic-book feel of the manhwa series upon which it’s based. On the other hand, most were not impressed with subpar CG effects, improbable plot, and poor action sequences, even drawing some complaints that the drama ruined the good name of the original work.

I’ve caught the first episode of Man Called God, and may have more to say when I’ve finished the second. For now, I’ll agree that the special effects are pretty awkward, although the Hawaii background is very pretty to look at. The drama seems to be trying too hard to be serious, however, which doesn’t quite work with the over-the-top comic-book-y action flair, which (sorry to say) comes off pretty cheesy. It wasn’t a horrible episode, but it was an uncomfortable watch. At least they can find comfort in the ratings — if they can keep the numbers up.

What is with the socks?? I would try to brush it off as a fashion statement, except the socks are RED!! And again, why are his pants so short? Even if he is sitting down.

I feel the same way about AMCG java!!!!
It was horribly missmatched. I mean...it wasn't epic, and it was way too cheesy...I thought I was watching some HD taiwanese drama at some point (still love them!)
I think SIG just lowered his value a bit...but hopefully there will be better editiing next week. The scenes were rough cut and overall...the story confused me (may because of no subs)

I'll wait for subs to see if I watch it or not...for now....I am not liking the "comic book" feeling...They are trying WAY too hard.

@otk
Ouch at the Taiwanese drama jab. Have you seen Invincible Shan Bao Mei? i think those writers also wrote the manual for over-the-top and cheesy. It won't make you think any better of tw-dramas, but at least you'll have fun laughing at it like I did. In a completely non-malicious way, of course =]

I think I'll try to catch at least the first few episodes of AMCG before I make up my mind for certain, though from what I'm seeing so far it doesn't seem very promising. Sadly, ratings tend to be inversely proportional to quality when it comes to dramas with high profiles (with several very notable exceptions).

Is this the new fashion in South Korea? Short pants and colorful socks?

Ok, I adore SIK but his new drama....not so much. Maybe it will get better later on but I don't know if I'll still be watching by then.

As for the cheese factor, it's cheezy fo sheezy.

I don't see what the big deal about short pants and color socks. Short pant suits are new Spring 2010 fashion, BTW, if you check it out.

I watched the first 2 epi without subs and with an open mind and expectation it's made from a comic, I find it very entertaining. I applaud SIG for taking a risk to follow the comic closely like no other dramas.

Thanks Javabeans for the artticle.

I am not feeling this one and I like SIK, which is why I am giving it a try. The other cast members are terrific, I hope they can make this work out based on the sheer talent of the cast....I feel sorry for them..... :(

Invincible Shan Bao Mei was a comdey and like all TW drama with over the top comic book feel with pop up emotion bubbles and sound effects, it was for laughs.
Well God seems to have tried a serious approach..never going to word, specially if the FX effect are poor, just makes it seem even worse, like batman from the 60's or something. I said when this was started i hoped they would go for a mix of serious and laughs, as people are going to laugh at it anyway, you may as well get the kudos for making the laughs on purpose than trying it 100% straight and get laughed at anyway!

@bjharm
Of course. It just drew laughs from me for a different reason =]
Unless people actually find those things funny...?
I suppose many people might, but it doesn't appeal to me personally.

I know AMCG based after a manhwa, but there's a good amount of manhwa adapted dramas that have been so.... cheesy.

I just can't put together SIK + Cheesy drama together.

I feel so bad for him, especially after all the work he put into losing weight. Plus, he has to wear short pant suits, purple socks, and a weird pama.

Sorry for double post, but...

"but there’s a good amount of manhwa adapted dramas that have been so…. cheesy."

I meant, there's a good amount of manhwa-adapted-dramas that have NOT been so cheesy.

I agree. The effects are too awkward for me. They should have better edited it. It derserves more than that

A Man called God. When its Song Il Gook it arouses my curiosity to watch the drama.
I know that when my expectation is too high I will be disappointed so I will watch & enjoy knowing there's a lot of hard work & effort going on for my entertainment. Ten minutes of viewing must be a day or more worth of work for them.

The shor(ter) pants is the in fashion 2010. If you are not into fashion & style its hard to notice what's in until we see it worn on screen by by the actors to start the trend.
A Man called God. Thank you.

I don't care if the short pants are the latest fashion, they are hideous. I don't mind the socks, but please fix the pants!
That said, I don't know what to think about this drama. Didn't like the first two episodes much. I still can't decide whether it takes itself too seriously, or not seriously enough. And it doesn't help that the main actors look like victims of an eating disorder.

Well, he is eye candy. And I am going to watch the next episode (to give it a fair chance, since I was not impressed with this 1st ep.), but...

I was rather dissapointed, and not only because of the superficial presentation of the different motives of the drama, but mainly because of how the leading male was presented (since the 1st episode was pretty much about him).

First of all: they could have made him into something really great, but instead the whole production crew seems to have wanted to take the easy way out and just make him into this ultimate macho, who can do stuff, after stuff, after stuff...
And so we have a scene after a scene with thight facial expressions (and now I don't mean thight as in great but as in literally thight) and thight poses of a guy in the middle of various physical activities - and nothing more, to the extent of it being flat out ridiculous at times.

Secondly (ok, this IS nit picking, but it really annoyed me *laughs*): what's up with the hair, man? Would he be 15 years, or even 10, younger, he'd be able to pull it off, but as it is now, it seems like he's a man stuck in his teens - stylewise. Why not give him a less flairy haircut and that way (too) make his character more believable?

Thirdly... *sigh* the underwater 'kiss'. In my eyes an inexcusably silly and almost forced (like: there's got to be something, so we'll do this) scene (the girl's under water for, what, 15 sec's? Oh puleasee... Call the paramedics). Erase it and instead make him ride behind her (you know, the way life savers would) on the surf board, instead of paddling in the water, and there you'd have your 'romantic spark-start'-for them two...

Let's see if the 2nd episode will be more about the leading lady (oh, AND I really disliked how the women in this were one-dimensionally stupid/naive and weak. Not good.)

- J.

I some how ended up quite liking it after three episodes. the characters are gather cartoonish but the bad big cop, second male lead' is one scary guy talk about twisted, maybe because he hides it behind his cop image, when his real self peeks out you get shivers.

I didn't like AMCG's first four or five episodes but now it has been very exciting and high....i'm looking forward to watching new episodes and wonder the end....You can think that SIG hair style and suits are weird but they both will be very fashioable (of course if you're up to fashion a little bit...) It is the trendiest show I have seen so far in2010...
