Another celeb detained on drug charges

A year after star Joo Ji-hoon was busted for drug use, another drug scandal is breaking. At the center of attention is an as-yet-unnamed singer-turned-actor who was taken for police questioning as one of 23 people rounded up in a large drug bust. Those involved are charged with regular use of marijuana and methamphetamine (crystal meth).

Eleven were charged and held in custody on May 30, including one Ms. C, age 29, who is the director at an English hagwon (academy). Twelve were charged but not detained, including the celebrity in question, who is identified as Mr. Kim, 24. He is alleged to have bought both meth and marijuana, and smoked the latter a total of 18 times between December 2009 and April 2010 in his Kangnam home. They were supplied by a Mr. Lee, 26, who sold them the drugs and is a teacher at the English hagwon. Lee was reportedly deported from the States for a similar charge.

Naturally, this has netizens curious about “Mr. Kim”‘s identity, who has been identified by the media as a singer with his acting debut in the works, and many believe they’ve narrowed it down to one pop star in particular.

The facts as outlined in news reports:

  • He is 24, and a singer turned actor.
  • He made his solo singer debut about a year ago. His screen debut in a movie is upcoming.
  • His mini-homepage is reportedly attracting massive attention, drawing close to 10,000 visitors in 12 hours.

This has led to a lot of speculation that he is Hero Jaejoong of DBSK, and for a while his was the top name in online portal searches. But that seems to be a knee-jerk reaction to the age and singer aspect, and it appears that not all the details fit. (It’s been many years since Jaejoong debuted as a singer, and his acting debut was last year.)

Now the name drawing most attention is Taegoon, and the facts seem to fit his case more closely.

Taegoon

Taegoon debuted in 2009 with a mini album. He is 24. His acting debut was announced last month in the film Piano on the Sea, where he plays a genius pianist and was set to star with Jo Ahn as his love interest. His mini-homepage has close to 9,000 visitors today.

Sigh. These drug busts always make me sad, because they just seem careless and stupid on the stars’ part (and the other non-stars involved as well). These incidents always bring out a faction of comments that say, “So what? It’s only pot” and “I can’t believe how ridiculous Korea’s drug laws are.” To some extent I agree, but I also think that it’s missing the point to apply a Western point of view to a different society that views these matters in a different light. And even if we all agree that Korea has overly punitive drug laws, the fact of the matter is that these celebs have so much to lose and they KNOW what’s on the line. They know what’ll happen and they’ve seen it come to pass before. Hence stupid and careless. 🙁

I don't really have some personal vendetta against pot. However, everyone I know that does pot has ended up apathetic, paranoid and has completely thrown away their education and future. One of these people ended up becoming addicted and now has a mild form of schizophrenia.

All the people I know who drink alcohol - a.k.a. EVERYONE (to use Starscream's analogy above) are simply fine. No addictive symptoms, no long-term health problems, nada.

Go figure.

It's kind of hard for me to understand all of the marijuana hating because it is perfectly legal for me to do on the reservation. I really don't understand why it's illegal as it has so many other helpful properties, although I really don't want people driving on it. Also, out of the hundreds of people that I have watched smoke and have personally smoked with (teachers, preachers, business men, doctors, medicine men, chiefs), not a single one of them has had an allergic reaction, so your 'death by pot' claim has very little validity.

i'm confused though. People keep saying stuff about meth. Was this actor caught with meth? That's stuff is disgusting: anything that cockroaches avoid should be a sign that humans should avoid it, too.

Man some of you need to get off your damn high horse. Stop condemning people who choose and like to smoke pot. It's their damn choice and they can do wtfever they like (oh and don't give me shit about how it's ~oh so illegal when y'all are downloading dramas and music which is illegal as well). Oh and just because your third cousin's nephew's best friend's daughter's boyfriend's little sister dropped out of school and likes wearing tin foil hats and OMFG DESTROYED HER LIFE!!!11ELEVEN!!! because of the evil that is ~*marijuana*~ =/= everyone else who smoke pot. So stfu and stfd thanks.

@ Gara Western Bigot? that a bit too much! YOU are correct, US law on drugs for user is not harsh because we consider the person who use drugs are victims and not criminal. Sorry, if you think we are bigot for looking at the bigger picture, however your law against drug dealer are extreme in that all that matter. Take some time a visit a rehab and you see why we don't enforce strict laws on the user, they are in they own personal hell, what imprisonment going to accomplish? We have your Good, Bad and Ugly but the one thing America don't do is throw stone regardless if we live in a glass or brick house. We are a nation that don't required or ask for other counties approval.

Korea can keep they Strict Law on drugs, do you really think we care? We America respect other countries Laws without judgement so you should also learn from us and not judge especially when you don't know.....

As for the comment about sex scandal, hello it don't even have to be sex, just being seen with a girl/guy is a scandal how pathetic

@55 you are a damn fool LMAO. If it only it were that simple. Korea is a country full of contradictions. A businessman can pay for prostitution and not be prosecuted but let him be caught with drugs and it is over. Strange indeed.

Sucks man. It sucks alot.
Why do people do this? The pleasure dont last long and your basically killing yourself. But w/e, its their stupidity. I dont feel sorry though. I was sorry for Joo Ji Hoon, because well he messed up big time and he had such a bright future. Things were going great for him and he lost that in a moment. He only did it 2wice and it wasnt even a harmful drug and he was still reprimanded. But this guy? Ahm He should of learnt from others mistake. I know it some ppl say the law is stupid or its his choice but thats besides the point. If you worked so hard for something as important as your future, why go and mess it up by doing something you know will only hurt you. And obviously in korea it doesnt matter if you used it a month or a year ago, when they find out thats it. Your busted. Its extremely sad, because he destroyed himself. And even if he hadnt been busted, ahm the effect of using meth is horrible on a person.

because the evil that is drugs is not that evil so we should let people do them and wait until they destroy their lives.. and when they've all gone nuts and their faces have already melted, let us pity them and think that they shouldn't have taken it in the first place

Woah, I was wondering what happened to him as I was having some song nostalgia today and I can't believe I forgot reading about this here a few years ago :(. Totally sucks since he went through a lot to debut as a singer but seeing as how Joo Ji Hoon came back, maybe he can have a comeback too?

hmm... i dont think it was taegoon. i've seen recent pics of him...he's been in some photoshoots or selcas. dunno. but he's sexy. c; so it cant be him. im sure he'd look screwed up or something.

he's 27/28 now so around the older suju member's ages. ;c so he's not young. he most likely will stay in acting.
