Dramabeans Giveaway: Tell us your drama addiction stories!

It’s been a while, but it’s time for another Dramabeans giveaway.

Up for grabs this time: the limited edition You’re Beautiful director’s cut DVD box set! Yup, it’s the very same DVD set that was announced previously, and comes with an A.N.JELL poster. (Note: the DVDs are Region 3.)

To enter: Tell us what you’ve done in the name of your k-drama addiction.

How far have you gone to satisfy your drama craving? What wackiness have you perpetrated because a character or a story got under your skin? It could be anything, like flying to Korea to visit a famous filming location, or making up a story to skip class so you could watch the latest episode, or setting up a half-dozen alarm clocks to make absolutely sure you wake up in time to live-stream a finale. We know you’ve done it, and we want to hear about it!

(True story: I once called in sick to catch a finale episode. No, the episode wasn’t actually airing DURING work hours, but I knew I’d be too wound up all day to wait and just HAD to watch it right away! And I’m willing to bet real money that I’m not the only one who’s done this.)

Post your stories anytime over the following week. Be sure to enter a real, valid email address when you post so we can get in touch with the winner. We’ll close entries on Thursday, July 1 at 9 pm PST (that’s midnight East Coast time, or you can check out when that is for you via the World Clock).

Girlfriday and I will read over all the entries and select a winner. We understand that “best” is subjective, but we’re thinking there are some truly entertaining, outrageous, funny stories out there. We’ll let ya know who wins soon after the contest ends. But really, when we’re sharing and commiserating (and, I suspect, laughing our heads off maniacally) about our drama addictions, I’m gonna say we ALL win.

I was first introduced to Korean dramas now when I lived in Korea but when I first moved to the US. Haha.
My grandma came to visit and because the town that I live in is a particularly boring one, any time I went to school, I opened crunchyroll (this was before mysoju was discovered) for my grandma so she can stay at home and watch dramas all day while she cooks and does the laundry. Just so she didn't get bored. I remember sitting with her while she watched Winter Sonata (RIP Park Yong Ha) and I was just watching it while I was eating dinner. Then my mom came home and she joined in. We lost track of time as we went from episode to episode and as a middle schooler for 3 days in a row, I stayed up till 5AM went to school, did my homework, and watched more and more dramas.
It ended up being that I was more jetlagged than my grandma who came from Korea.
More recent stories: I watched the first four episodes of Prosecutor Princess (the best drama of my life seriously) four times in a row each in one day. Seriously that's more than 16 hours of my life!
Now if I get obsessed over a drama, I just go to Yahoo Korea and type in the title of the drama and read every single article related to that drama checking 24/7 for updates (currently this is happening with Bad Guy and Coffee House). Sometimes, this works against me though because I'll find out spoilers about what's happening in the dramas (This is how I knew about the phone booth kiss in Coffee House! Kinda wish I didn't figure that out because I love it when kisses come out of nowhere like that!).
Ok my story's not very intense but I hope it was entertaining although noone probably read this far into it.
Haha. Go Korean dramas!
I desperately need to drop my addiction though. It's okay now because I'm on vacation but I'm starting my first year college in the fall and to be honest, I think my grades were horrible near the end of Junior and Senior year because of dramas! Especially when Wednesdays and Thursdays, dramas tripled up! (Cain and Abel and Hateful but Once Again and more recently Prosecutor Princess, Personal Preference and Cinderella's Sister) I love it but I hate it. I love that there are so many things to watch and if I get behind I can watch in on a Friday because there are NO dramas on Friday (except I watch A Good Day for the Wind to Blow) but I hate the fact that I can't get anything done without giving into temptation to watch the dramas before I do my homework or study. Starting to watch the dramas at 4 which is when I get home eventually ends at like 8ish and sometimes 9ish if I watch variety shows. :(
I'm going to try watching less and less shows (I don't want to start watching Road No. 1 I dropped Life is Beautiful which brings me to 0 shows on the weekends- too bad I'm hooked onto 3 variety shows on Sunday and it does not include Family Outing season 2!) and now I watch King of Bakery, Bad Guy, Coffee House, and a Good Day for the Wind to Blow (only 35min!) which I'm really proud of myself about!

I HOPE I CAN BREAK MY DRAMA ADDICTION BECAUSE I CAN'T FAIL COLLEGE!
GOD KBS MBC SBS STOP BRINGING OUT SUCH GOOD SHOWS! (I know I'm totally gonna give in and watch Athena and Runaway-the cast is too unresistable so PLEASE don't throw another romantic comedy in my way or anything with Park Shi Hoo or Kang Ji Hwan. I can't control myself for those 2 guys!)

Ok I was seriously seriously debating whether to post this but I'll try to keep it condensed and (bitter)sweet.

My ex-boyfriend took me on a vacation to Hawaii for 5 days. He's an avid surfer so he had set up a date on the beach one day. I faked a stomach flu because I just couldn't wait to finish two episodes of Coffee Prince in our hotel room. When he came back, he said I had puffy eyes (apparently I cried at some point in the drama). He thought I was upset about not being able to go to the beach and took me to a bar to lighten the mood. Basically I got piss drunked (bad bad bad idea..) and told him in my drunken stupor that I was crying because of some guy named Choi Han-kyul. My boyfriend (who's Korean) started getting mad asking me who the hell is this Han-kyul guy and if I was cheating on him. I then apparently blacked out from the alcohol (just stay with me please..I know it was awful.) The next day I was lying in our hotel bed with the fattest hangover ever. When I fully woke up, I found out via a message at the receptionist desk that my boyfriend had flown back home and left me in Hawaii by myself. My first reaction was "that fcuking jerk!" because I couldn't remember what had happened the night before. Annnnnnnyhow, long story short, I flew back, made a huge scene, kicked him in the ass, FELT LIKE AN ASS MYSELF when I found out the entire story, and we were both speechless about how the hell this all went down. We eventually broke up because of a multitude of reasons, which I can assure you were much more significant and normal than the situation I talked about. However, to this day, my close girlfriends like to taunt that I singlehandedly destroyed my love life because of my addiction to kdrama.

They ask me all the time why aren't there rehab centers for kdrama addicts? I just ask myself: where the hell are all the cute, rich, and loving male kdrama addicts out there? Holler!

so, i finished Shining Inheritance , and I must say that I really enjoyed it. I was left with that fantastic feeling of accomplishment, like I was doing something productive when in actuality i was just lying on my bed, yelling at my computer, or laughing... sayin AHHH at the cute parts, you know stuff like that. Anywayz, my classes started back after a week break, and since I couldn't sleep, "because of the excitement of going back"(lol) I thought i would start a nice quick drama to end my night.....Why dont I ever learn!!!!!???? I decided to watch My Lovely Sam Soon.....I didn't know it was be sooooooo wonderful. I was in love at episode one, didn't go to sleep until 4a.m. , went to class at 8, went to work afterwards, got off at 10, and I need to sleep now since I have to do it again tomorrow.....BUT all I keep thinking is ONE MORE EPISODE! I REALLY did NOT know what I was getting into when I started my first drama.

ALSO THIS DRAMA IS AmAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not Korean and started to watch a couple k-dramas with a friend and then became so addicted I had to branch out on my own. I'm in college and during the 2 reading days before finals week, I would go to the library with the intention of studying but I instead watched all 16 episodes of My Girl. Yep, in the university library. I got some weird looks. At night I couldn't sleep because I was thinking about the show and the beautiful Seol Gang Chan, so I would stay up half the night watching Lee Dong Wook interviews on youtube in Korean. Yep, I don't know Korean. Then during the first 5-6 weeks of summer term I watched Full House, Coffee Prince, It Started with a Kiss (not Korean, but still), Personal Taste, You're Beautiful, and Que Sera Sera. Since I started watching dramas, I've had straight A's for the first time in college.

The more dramas I watch, the more Korean I become. I eat rice with almost every meal, use chopsticks whenever I can, notice every Korean on campus, and even practice walking like a korean girl. I often leave parties early in order to return to my drama which I'll watch into the early hours of the morning. After I finished Coffee Prince, I vowed to not watch another k-drama until school was over (which is why I found a loop hole and watched a Taiwanese one) but I didn't know what to do with my time anymore. I'll probably never have a boyfriend unless I meet someone as great as Choi Han-Gyul or Hwang Tae-Kyung. When I give relationship advice to friends, I always refer to dramas. Actually, I refer to them in all my conversations. K-dramas have constructed the framework by which I view life. Dangerous? Probably. Worth it? Definitely.

A Giddy Confession from a K-Drama addict

Hello Javabeans and Friends!

My name is…well, call me Miss Tardy. I’m an addict of Korean Dramas. It all started last 2007, when my mom sent me a DVD of Jewel in the Palace (aka Dae Jang Geum). The first few scenes of episode 1 did not impress me until the scene where an old man described 3 women who would determine the fate of the future father of Jang Geum. I was so intrigued by this riddle that I watched not only episode 1 but also the next 9 episodes. If I recall correctly, I started on a Friday night and continued on the early hours of Saturday. So that Friday night was when I first developed one of the common symptoms of K-drama addiction: marathon drama watching.

After watching the 82 episodes of Jewel in the Palace, I suffered from withdrawals that I watched the drama again. This is a second symptom of K-drama addiction: repeat watching drama and feel happy about it.

Yet I still crave for more K-drama so I searched online for the latest news on Young-Ae Lee, and about her other works. I learned about Joint Security Area (JSA) but I was not successful in getting hold of its DVD. To my delight however, I found in our local library the DVD of her movie: Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. So I borrowed it in haste! Third symptom of K-drama addiction: become resourceful and resolute in obtaining anything about K-drama.

In 2008, mom sent me DVDs of Jumong and My Girl. I loved both of them! Of course, during this time, I exhibited the common symptoms - marathon drama watching, repeat watching drama, and searching for news about the works of Song-Il Gook, Han Jye-Hin, Lee Da-Hae, and Lee Dong-wook. I also fell in love with My Girl’s OST even though I did not understand any of its lyrics. A fourth symptom of K-drama addiction: listen to K-drama’s OST even without understanding Korean language.

In 2009, mom sent me another DVD; it’s Yisan. Is there a trend here? My mom is my personal K-drama supplier! Like Dae Jang Geum and Jumong, Yisan’s story also captivated me, further enhancing my K-drama addiction, and leading me to develop the fifth symptom of K-drama addiction: daily and frequently check dramabeans.com site.
I was searching for news about Han Ji-min when I stumbled upon JB’s first impressions of Cain and Abel in dramabeans.com site. Because of Dramabeans site, I found about those Korean dramas online viewing sites so I got to watch Cain and Abel online and 2 other dramas of Han Ji-min, one of which is Capital Scandal which introduced me to Kang Ji-Hwan, JB’s favorite as we all know. Did I mention I like Cain and Abel's OST?

By summer of 2009, my home laptop was turned on and connected to the internet for over 24 hours straight. I only have dialup connection so it takes hours and hours to buffer all the K-drama episodes I had been watching then. Sixth symptom of K-drama addiction: become a slave-driver of your home computer.

There were few times though that even after waiting for hours, the drama video online did not work. So I just tried them again later in the week except for the last episode of Capital Scandal. I got anxious in knowing what had happened so one lunch break I brought my work laptop outside our office building to watch that episode! Seventh symptom of K-drama addiction: hide from co-workers your K-drama addiction.

My “slave-driver of home computer” habit continued on during the “You’re Beautiful” (YB) showing (Fall 2009) so much so that in October 2009, my home computer crashed! I tried re-formatting it one weekend to no avail. But because I really gotta watch YB, I learned about the “diagnostic mode” of starting up the computer and this enabled me to watch the remaining YB episodes as well as read JB’s wonderful recaps. YB gave me so much joy that I could not help but tell my co-workers about it and the wonderful world of K-dramas. Some of them laughed; they could not understand how I can be passionate about K-drama when I do not even understand Korean language. Eighth symptom of K-drama addiction: share the love of K-dramas and bear the ridicule.

By January of this year, I successfully rebuilt my computer and re-installed all necessary applications most especially my internet connection. I did not mind learning more than I wanted to know about Microsoft operating system because my pipeline to K-drama land has been restored! Ninth symptom of K-drama addiction: Try and try until you succeed.

Mom, who keeps on giving, has since then sent me the DVDs of Queen Seon-Deok and Iron Empress. Through marathon watching, I finished Queen Seon-Deok in 3 weekends and loved each episode of it. Poor Bidam!!! But I’m delayed in finishing Iron Empress since I chose to finish watching first Cinderella’s Sister, Jejongwoon, and Lovers Paris. Lately my K-drama viewing schedule has been so hectic and engrossing that I no longer watch regular TV programs and no longer get very upset when my favorite baseball team loses. Tenth symptom of K-drama addiction: Forget national pastime.

So, yes, I am a Korean Drama addict. I unabashedly would watch riveting Korean dramas for straight long hours, and then watch them again. I would search continually for news about K-dramas and faithfully read dramabeans.com. I would listen to K-drama OST even without understanding its lyrics. I would utilize all computer resources available just so I can keep up with K-drama online viewing (although I’ll be more judicious this time because rebuilding my home computer was exhausting!). To satisfy K-drama craving, I would watch it even in hiding. Lastly, I can miss watching my favorite baseball team’s games but never my favorite K-dramas! I hope for your support and understanding. And I look forward to watching more riveting Korean Dramas! Aja!

i got addicted to K-dramas after my sister introduced me to Full House when i was doing my pre-university in another state 6 hours away form my hometown...i got soo addicted i would skip class and finish an entire series in 24 hours non-stop with no food, just my laptop and i in the room. of course i couldn't do that if i were staying at home as my father scorns k-dramas and i would be dead if dad found out i skipped clas!!
my sister is now working but that doesnt stop her from downloading dramas!she downloads dramas in the office!!how desperate can we get huh?
at home, we've influenced our mother as well as our grandmother to watch!!!although we don't live in korea, we still manage to buy imported ramen, prepacked kimchi, korean mushrooms and even korean octopuses!i used to detest raw seafood but after watching Family Outing i made myself eat sashimi and raw octopus!my sister taunted me saying "koreans ALWAYS eat raw seafood" and that got me eating the thing i used to find most disgusting and nauseating...
i'm so crazy bout korean culture and food..my sister and i eat ALWAYS eat at korean restaurants if we have to eat out..i'm now learning to make my own kimchi and i hope it will be a success!
I met a korean on a bus from my university back to my hometown. I usually don't talk to strangers on the bus as there are alot of freaks and perverts out here but when i heard him speak korean on the phone, i threw caution to the wind and then we started talking bout kimchi, Rain and everything bout Korea!!!
but when he asked for my phone number, i got freaked out and pretended to sleep..haha i know its lame..
anyway i hope at least once in my life i meet a korean actor..or singer...ahh what would i do if i met So Ji Sub?????or Jang Geun Suk????

I'm from the Philippines . I am really hooked up with Korean dramas and movies as well. It became our bonding moments with my husband and myself . Even if were watching it with english subtitles, we cannot take our eyes off the screen and to watch it for quite a long period of time . Our favorites are PASTA , QUEEN SEON DEUK ,COFEE PRINCE, ROMANTIC ISLAND , PRINCE HOUR, PRINCESS HOUR , AND A LOT MORE . I do not know what is it about Korean dramas and movies that really making us crave for more to watch !!!
Quen seon deuk is the best , Mishil I love her , deukman and kim nam gil , wow they made us cry , laugh and felt romantic with each other again . Specially episode 57 , love it to the max . Even the background music are all great and the right taste to the episodes . Pasta , we love it too , we watched it like a thousand times already , told our friends in FB about it . wrote them in their wall to watch this because everyone can relate to the comedy romance genre of the said drama .My husband becomes romantic also to me again , holding my hands when were walking anywhere again and we always have a smile on our face since then . We never get tired of talking about it , sharing it with other couples and friends . Its like a
Quarter pounder mcdonalds hamburger , yummmy till the end . Both drama were my energy boosting vitamins to keep me going , I bought copies of their DVD and watch it over and over again . The director of Korean Movies were all great ! I salute them !

I wanted to share an instance of my drama obsession that happened recently.

Having finished watching Smile, You for the 2nd time, I decided to re-watch another one of my favorite dramas the day of my high school graduation. It has been almost two years since I last watched Delightful Girl Chun Hyang. That day I holed myself up in my room in front of the comp with my food stash handy. This is a ritual of mine that I perform frequently to sate my appetite for dramas. When the parental units called me down to leave for the commencement ceremony, I had no choice but to transition from my desktop to my iPhone, the only portable option at that moment. Drama on the go! While my ma and pop were fretting over me being late to rehearsal, I was busy cracking up at how Chun Hyang is overly conscious of her husband’s magnetic charm. After arriving about an hour later, I bailed on whatever was left of the rehearsal. With my eyes glued to the screen, I walked back and forth down the hallways of the pavilion a bit on edge over Byun employing underhand tactics to tear Mong Ryong away from Chun Hyang. Eventually, I settled down at an isolated corner to get away from the noise coming from the stadium. I probably would have missed commencement if my friends didn’t come looking for me. They know my addiction all too well. During the actual ceremony, I had to watch the last few episodes without audio. The poor quality of the video on my phone coupled with background noise made viewing conditions hardly ideal but I couldn’t care less. To avoid confiscation, I just needed to hide it from the administration (graduates weren’t supposed to have their phones with them). I tried several positions before I found a secure although uncomfortable one. What I did was I crossed my arms with the iPhone snuggled in between. The wide sleeves of my gown served as added coverage. I slouched a little in my seat to ease the strain on my neck. I made sure to look up every now and then so it did not look like I was out cold. Other than through the nature of the position I was in, I didn’t draw unwanted attention (or so I think). That is save the moment I got up on stage to get my diploma. As I reached out to receive my diploma and extended my right arm to shake the principal’s hand, my phone slipped right out of my left hand and crashed onto the floor!! The first thing that went through my head was “What am I going to watch if my phone is broken?!!!” Then I felt the heat rise to my face as I quickly stooped down to pick up my phone and exited the stage. So much for a plan predicated on stealth. My embarrassment was short-lived as I found out my phone did not die on me. I scuffled back to my row, plopped down on the seat, and returned to Delightful Girl. I decided to forgo the Senior Party that night. Instead, I celebrated by indulging in more k-dramas xD What can I say? K-dramas bring me happiness <3

Eeks do I still make the deadline???

Before I fell into my korean drama addiction, I was pretty much a J-drama girl. For years, I resisted Korean dramas since what little I saw seemed to consist of melodramatic love triangles and terminal illness and tears, tears and more tears... Having little patience for such stuff, I decided that there was nothing worth watching.

Even though my friends were all K-drama mad, I got through the Winter Sonata, Autumn Love Story, Goong and Coffee Prince crazes with my determination intact.

This folly continued until about 3 years ago. What first got me watching korean dramas was ironically because I was doing a freelance subtitling project for a local cable channel and I got a few korean dramas as a project. Now, these are not in korean, but dubbed in Chinese... my job was to translate the Chinese into English subs...

My first project? One ep of Que Sera Sera... chinese dialogue was like fingernails on a blackboard...but the show looked vaguely interesting so I figured it might be interesting to watch in Korean, even though at the time I also thought Korean sounded like a mixture of Hokkein, Thai and Vietnamese...*LOL Que Sera Sera didn't get me hooked on Korean dramas, but it did get me totally hooked on Shinhwa...but that is another story.

My second project was the one that clinched it for me... the epic JUMONG. Not bad considering the episodes I watched initially and got totally hooked on had the most irritating Chinese dubbing known to man... yet for some inexplicit reason I was soooo hooked that I went looking for the original KOrean version with Chinese Subs online.

It was full steam ahead from then on. (In honour of my first real foray into Korean drama, I keep soft copies of Jumong on my hard disk, I own 5 massive boxes of VCDs and I have a lovely DVD set. )

Thanks to Jumong and Song Il Gook, I totally fell in love with period dramas... and from there, my internet searches led me into a world totally different from my preconceptions. To this day I kick myself for wasting all that time NOT getting into Korean dramas.

Ok, I admit that I am a complete fangirl...I only watch shows that have cute guys that I like in them. Form Jumong, I watched Que Sera Sera again, which then led me to watch every single drama that Eric has acted in.

Thanks to my subtitling job, I "discovered" Lee Junki...which then led me to watch everything he's ever done. Iljimae resulted in my "discovering" Park Shi Hoo, which resulted in me finding my favourite dramas... Family Honour and Prosecutor PRincess.

And of course... my forays into searching the internet for information led me to Dramabeans, from which I discovered Tamna (and Im Ju Hwan) and WISFC (and Go Soo), Story of Man (and Park Yong Ha (God rest his soul) and gems like Return of Iljimae. Oh and of course You're Beautiful!!!! Which I really loved...and which then led me to find stuff on JSK and JYH...

From this wonderful place, I've learned more about Korean drama than ever and this is where I come to get introduced to new actors to interest me and dramas worth watching. I've learned to do out of character things like leave comments and get involved in forums....and spazzing...oh the spazzing... but it's great to have people to spazz with....*LOL

Oh and because of JUMONG, I began to learn Korean and get interested in Korean Culture. Because I started learning korean ,I got into korean music, which then led to me getting into variety shows... And because I am into hip hop dance, I am in seventh heaven coz koreans are awesome dancers...

So to wrap it up, what started as a korean drama addiction branched out into a KOREA addiction... it's practically become a part of my lifestyle...morning ritual is to check Dramabeans and DLsites for latest drama/variety/music updates....I go to stores just to get the latest drama once it's released for sale...I HAVE to watch something Korean before I go to bed at night, and my ipod has been cleared of everythign except Kpop!

Not bad for an anti-korean girl who once proclaimed she would NEVER want to go to Korea or watch Korean dramas or listen to korean music...

It just goes to show...NEVER say never... ^0^

Sorry it ended up kind of long winded...:P

an hour and half mrt ride from dongdaemun to unseo,
asking people (using sign language) at lotte mart where the hell is the bus stop to sammock ferry,
boarding a barge of cars (we were the only two people without a car)
another bus ride to sido (and encountering two unnis and a boy, who really seem to be curious where we're going even if we do not speak the same language!)
braving hypothermia and windburns in a tandem bike, (my then friend is stronger, but she is petite, so i had to be in the front, and i was not athletic at all that time.),
walking through the uphill and downhill lot (my then friend rode the bike, uphill and downhill...hmmm, dangerous)
and we finally reach our destination..."pul haus" (full house), that is, after almost four hours of traveling.

eight days in korea, and i told my then friend than one thing that i could not compromise on, not going to that house.

it was january 2, 2009, winter is harsher than ever. surprising though, the house was built in a remote remote pension island. but it was all worth it. once i entered full house, funny memories came along with it. took so many pictures! didn't wanna waste the travel and so took a lot (i can send you lots!)

and then going back through the same route seems a bit tiresome.

had to ride the tandem bike again and return it to the pensioners (they're having bikes rented out)
then a sumptuous meal steps away (the best i've tasted in korea) from the pension house
took a cab back to the other end of sammock port to reach sammock port (well the bus comes every hour! my then friend even suggested to just take the bike and bike all the way to the port! it took around 20mins by bus! i can't bike that far, plus that would be stealing)
again a barge ride (we weren't asked for money going to but we needed to pay going out)
a little grocery shopping at lotte mart
and then mrt again

we left at 8am, we got back to our hotel at 7pm.

oooh i forgot to mention the bus ride from the sammock port to lotte mart (unseo mrt station), we saw the two unnis and the boy again. no wonder they didn't ride the bus we rode, it was the wrong one (other direction). it headed to the airport and we spent about 45mins going around. at least we got to sleep before doing grocery shopping.

waaah. just knew about this promo today.haha.

i'm a suuuuuuuuuper korean drama fan. i think i'm a kdrama fan for 6-7 years now. i made so many things just to finish watching my favorite dramas. i stayed up late so many times and it's a habit now.haha. i'll never forget that i watched these dramas bad family, time b/w dog & wolf and hong gil dong for 2 and a half days straight. i didn't study for my preliminary exams because i watched witch yoo hee. i'm very happy when we have exams not because i love studying but i can stay up late watching my favorite dramas. i influenced my father, mother, sister, cousins, friends in watching korean dramas. so they basically know who's this actor and who's that just like what happened the other night, when i was watching a man called god, my father said "i know who's that girl is,she was in only you right!i really like her." =D while my mother loves lee dong gun the most. =D my longest drama marathon was i guess 3 weeks sleeping for only 2-3 hours a day so that i can finish all the dramas i want.haha. i'm super addicted to korean dramas, my schoolmates know me because of that, i'm kinda popular in school because my friends always brags me to their other friends about me being a very huge fan of korean dramas,so whenever they see me they'll ask for suggestions of what good dramas they can watch, i also dream of becoming an actress because of my addiction to dramas.haha, but i don't think i can be one. in our intramurals i go to school just to have an attendance, after i signed my attendance i go back to our house since it's 50-100m away from our school to watch dramas again. my parents scold me ALOT because i spend too much time watching dramas instead of studying.haha. but they can never force me to stop watching korean dramas because for me i can't live without watching kdramas. though i haven't fell in love yet, by watching kdramas i felt how to be in love, cried so much because of the drama (happens all the time.haha) i also like watching japanese and taiwanese dramas but NOTHING CAN BEAT KOREAN DRAMA!!!! =DDD i'll be a fan of KDRAMAS FOREVER.. i think i watched over a hundred of dramas. i dunno what's really my favorite drama since i'm always getting hooked to a drama when i'm watching it. but i can name few/some dramas that i really like. ;))) Coffee Prince, My Girl, East of Eden, Bad family, witch yoo hee, time b/w dog and wolf, hong gil dong, iljimae both versions, sangdoo let's go to school, full house, green rose, wonderful life, style, birth of a rich man, prosecutor princess, all in, iris...etc. i think writing all the drams i liked will take forever, ^_____^ i'm really very happy of your site bacause you always update me of the happening in korean industry. keep up the good work!!! let's be kdrama addicts forever.haha. 화이팅!!

This is Entry 1
Dear Javabeans and Girlfriday,

I was once a Korean drama sceptic who was so prejudiced towards k-dramas that I criticise anything k-drama related whenever I had the chance. Karma must have been working its charms because guess who got hooked to k-dramas after watching 15 minutes of Little Bride? Yup, that’s right. Me.

Below are some of the things I did just because a Korean drama (to put it in your words) got under my skin.

Little Bride
In a rush to get back to the computer after a drink of water, I seemed to think that I had somehow morphed into someone with super powers. I did my first ever parkour stunt (i.e. jumping over a couch) and landed face-first flat on the floor. Guess who isn’t too keen on the idea of parkour now?

The Vineyard Man
I’m involved in this postcard exchange project (Postcrossing) and after watching The Vineyard Man, I had asked every French Postcrosser I could find to send me postcards of vineyards.

Iris
Fine dining or final episode of Iris? Yup, that’s right. I deprived my stomach of a good meal and chose Iris. When Lee Byung Hun died, tears flowed from my eyes as though he’s a relative.

Princess Hours
I practiced Joo Ji Hoon’s signature stand (i.e. back on the wall with one leg casually propped on the wall) in a public toilet, drawing stares from people who went into the toilet. One lady even looked at me sympathetically as though I’m suffering from some mental disease. I pretended to brush imaginary dirt off my shoes when my mom walked in the toilet to see what was taking me so long.

You’re Beautiful
I synced my iPod into the iTunes on my new laptop, where all the songs from You’re Beautiful soundtrack are, thus losing all of the 300 over songs in my iPod. (Note: An iPod can only remain synced to one iTunes.)

From k-drama sceptic to k-drama obsessed, I guess I can shed away my pride and admit to this. I really want to win this contest. Since things done in the name of k-drama is the game, this is going to be the craziest (and I’m sure, the best) thing I do in the name of k-drama.

I’m dedicating 100 good deeds (be it for the benefit of myself or others) for k-drama.

Why 100 good deeds? I’ve noticed that more often than not, I can credit inappropriate behaviour (eg staying up too late, not completing homework, etc.) to satisfy my k-drama craving. K-dramas has brought much goodness in my life so now, I’d like to give back something good to it.

Thus, begins my Project 100 Good Deeds.

P.S. I didn’t start this project so that I could win this giveaway. This giveaway has made me truly realise what an important role Kdrama plays in my life. Regardless of the results, my 100 Good Deed Project will go on. =) So no (okay maybe not exactly zero, of course) pressure really.

P.P.S. Thanks for hosting this giveaway. You guys have done a great job!

Lots of love,
Serena C

This is Entry 2
Entry 1 – Page (5) Comment (16)

Dear Javabeans and Girlfriday,
I thought one comment would be insufficient to share all my stories. So here’s my second entry. I decided to do this a little creatively with a poem this time.

Because of Little Bride
I got into a fight
With a friend to choose sides
For Park Hyun Juk or Lee Dong Gun

Because of Iris
I decided not to watch Grease
My mom was so not please
Until she saw Lee Byung Hun and Kim Tae Hee kiss

Because of The Vineyard Man
I ate food from a can
Which tasted like sand
So that was not a really smart plan

Because of My Fair Lady
I dropped my keys
I was just too excited to see
What would happen with Yoon Eun Hye next

Because of Winter Sonata
Hot tears flowed from my eyes like lava
The pillow just couldn’t cover
The fact that I cried like a s**ker

I’m sorry if I wasted your time
All just because I couldn’t rhyme
Thank you so much for being kind
And for pretending that this poem is fine

Lots of love,
Serena C

10 Things Which Point to Drama Addiction

9. Your email and passwords are names of Korean Dramas or Korean Drama Stars.
8. 90% of your music is Korean Dramas music but you are not Korean.
7. You find yourself converting words in English to Korean but you are not Korean.
6. You tide yourself over in between weekly current drama episodes with a completed drama.
5. Your final project in pottery is composed entirely of pictures you paint from scenes of Korean Dramas, including All In, Summer Scent, Hwang Jin Yi, and Boys over Flowers.

Unfortunately, the following day, you accidentally delete all of your pictures. Unwilling to give in, you once again tour all of the drama sites which include payment for another 1 hour cab ride to visit the All In House, mimicking poses so you can replace the lost pictures.

What have I done in the name of my addiction to K-dramas? Hmm... what haven't I done? Beyond amassing a collection that is so large that I am beyond grateful that I no longer use VHS cassettes (news reports might come in that a woman was found trapped in her house, unable to move amongst the maze of tapes), I've taken up a new language at 50, proselytized to my friends and strangers, and converted my skeptic of a husband to the charms of Kim Sun-ah.

But the most incredible thing that I've done is traveled thousands of miles to walk in the footsteps of my favorite characters. One day, a little over 3 years ago, a mutual friend/addict and I, in one of our multiple daily emails spontaneously decided, "Well why NOT go?" After all, our mutual passion for serial dramas had taken us to Mexico together, why not? Dates were chosen and the plans grew "like Little Topsy." Where would we go? What would we see? Well, we would definitely have to see the Coffee Prince cafe (check), and walk near Deoksugung and Cheonggyecheon like our lovers from "Lovers in Prague" had (check and check). The list continued. But wait, our crazy plans continued to spiral out from there. We were also fans of Taiwanese dramas -- we have big hearts and plenty of room to love -- and had earmarked a visit to that country too as long as we were "in the neighborhood" -- and while we were there we could visit the Grand Hotel and Jiufen and Yehliu where the "On Air" production had filmed (check, check, and check). Oh, wait! Shortly before leaving we learned that Lee Junki would be having a fan meeting in Taipei! It was destiny, we had to go! So we did. And it was fabulous!

Back in Seoul we wondered... "We wrangled studio tours in Mexico at Televisa, could we do the same at one of the big 3 in Korea?" Boldly we set off for MBC and I proceeded first to confound the security guard at the entry gate with my rudimentary Korean/Konglish mix who waved me off in confusion to go bother the receptionist in side, then to bewilder the receptionist with my request. During my pleas, a gentleman had come downstairs and was heading out and she flashed him an SOS with her eyes. He responded to her distress signal and came over to see how he could help. Politely he explained that no, they did not give tours... interesting that other networks did... and the majority of the drama filming was done at another new production facility. Could we come back the next day? Go to the other site? Could he give us any advice? Peppering him with questions and more than a little bemused by the appearance of 3 people (me, my friend and her brother) who had clearly crossed oceans to come specifically to his humble network, the gentleman surrendered. Sacrificing his own plans, he volunteered to take us on a tour! And so he did, incredibly, to our amazement and profound gratitude! For the next 45 minutes we trailed him up and down the corridors of MBC, into set construction and from there to backstage while a scene from the drama "Assorted Gems" was taping and we stood transfixed as Han Jin Hee and Han Hye Sook tried to do their scene with not one but two babies. Afterwards we trotted into the green room for the drama and discussed the mystery of why Han Jin Hee's hair had been parted on one side for another drama ("The Road Home") and now was back to normal when in chimed in Michael Blunck, the Canadian who had a supporting role in the drama -- this was interest of him too! (Not to mention the curiosity of 3 people getting a private tour). But we had a tour to continue, no time for drama talk! Onwards we walked, down familiar halls (wait! Sunny met Jebin here in "Last Scandal"!) and into studios (ah... an informercial) and nooks and crannies. We saw the sound recording booths and watched overdubbing taking place. Up stairs and down our benefactor led us, closing our tour with a glimpse into the recording studios of MBC Radio on the top floor. He answered all my questions (I'm the nosy, not shy one, whereas my friend is much more reticent) with patience and no little amazement. How could someone so American (read: white, being the nordic type that I am) be so knowledgable and so interested in them, he would ask. And he confessed that he had never, in all his years, ever spoken so much English in his life! And who was this mystery tour guide? No less than the vice-president of documentary programming for MBC, a veteran of the company for 25 years! It was one of the highlights, perhaps THE highlight amongst the many highlights of this incredible journey inspired by our passion for Korean dramas. And we will cherish our memory of his kindness and those behind the scenes glimpses of MBC for years to come.

My K-drama addiction story:

I stared to watch K-dramas from June 2008 when KBS world had just been a few months old in my India. From the start i was attracted to the gracefulness of the dramas but none of the actors appealed much to me so i wasnt really addicted to Korean dramas but it all started when my eyes fell on the flower boy Kim Hyun Joong.I first saw him on the “Star Golden Bell Challenge” and among all the actors in that set I could see Kim Hyun Joong shining like a diamond. He was different from everyone to me and his cute smile was just so awe. I can’t deny the fact that I like him because he is so handsome in fact no one can deny it but apart for his handsomeness I liked his voice and straightforwardness. I could catch only his first name in the show, I couldn’t catch his last name so when I tried to find him on internet I couldn’t succeed. It was just like a dream coming true for me when I saw him on the drama “Boys Before Flowers” when I saw his face again my joy went beyond bounds. He played the character of Yoon Jihu in that drama and I will bet my head that no other actor in this entire world can play it more beautifully.Though Kim Hyun Joong received too many critics I could feel the heart of Yoon Jihu by the way he played the character. To me he was just so perfect in his acting and my craze for him grew to a great extent when I found about his boy band “SS501” as I’m a music freak. I loved Kim Hyun Joong to a great extent ever since and that love is growing day by day. When Kim Hyun Joong sang his solo version of “Because I’m stupid” (내 머리는 너무나 나빠서) in his drama I felt the feelings of Yoon Jihu so well in that song. Kim Hyun Joong has put his heart in singing this song, whenever I hear this song I think of the sufferings of Yoon Jihu and without me realizing tears roll down my cheeks.I was a way too upset about the triangular love story which made Yoon Jihu look like a fool so i didn't really like the drama but i loved Kim Hyun Joong in it. I’m a way too proud to be the fan of this great singer and actor. I have started a fan-club for him in an online community called “Orkut” and the club has 500+ members now from different countries but 90% of them are Indians, from this one could visibly see the hiking popularity of Kim Hyun Joong in India. Kim Hyun Joong leaving SS501 made me worry only because I would more likely loose my love for SS501 if it goes on without Kim Hyun Joong. I like him to a great extent and he will remain as my favorite actor and singer throughout my life.

wow...i can't even....pick. ><
i'd just finished you're beautiful after coming across the title on a drama site, for some reason it just popped out at me. I'm a music fanatic so any drama about music is awesome for me. (currently on beethoven's virus ^^) my favorite part about summer is that i have time to do stuff like this ....sorry excuse my randomness....now back to dramas.

you're beautiful was a great drama as it twisted just slightly away from the usual plotline but still managed to have the same effect. ...although it seems the whole great-angelic-guy-never-gets-the-girl theme IS getting a little frustrating. i was hurting for shinwoo throughout the whole drama and finally broke down at the end. and jeremy's crying seen was.....*sob*.......but as usual the writers/and directors manage to make me happy in the end....as usual. jang geun seuk's acting was hilarious ..which is probably what led me to finally watch beethoven's virus. but that's going to be another story ;P

i have to face it...i am- at least in the suimmer- a extreme drama lover...... so what am i doing on this site?? cinderella's sister. it tortured my heart and hopes so much i had to skip a few of the episodes to keep myself from going INSANE so ...... for saving my brain, thankyou for that. i happilly returned to watching the drama at episode 19 and refused to read the final episode. ...end of rant. thank you!

First off, genius idea javabeans and girlfriday for this contest.

I thought my k-obsession was bad, but these situations and anecdotes pretty much mirrored many of my actions. I saw this post when it first came out but didn't want to comment yet because I wanted to make sure I capitalized my passion to the core, so I made drafts to make sure I got everything in and here's the FINAL draft.

I've gone to sleep at 3-5am everyday this summer (waking up at 11 to be yelled at by my mom for waking up too late..) watching korean dramas (i.e. Coffee House, Hong Gil Dong, Dal Ja's spring), movies (i.e. Unstoppable Marriage, Level 7 civil servant, Baby and Me)

I always have a package of kimchi ramen on hand..

I've re-watched Coffee Prince 4 times..

The first thing I do when I open my computer is check my korean sites.

I check korean-related sites like allkpop, popseoul, and of course dramabeans every hour, and when I'm sitting comfortably on my bed every 10 min.

When hot photo shoots of my favorite hunks come out I look at their picture at night before I go to sleep increasing the chances of him appearing in my dream.

For my favorite Korean scenes, I act out he sequence with myself and a mirror. Hey if I find out my lover has been dressing himself as a woman and didn't tell me to make our relationship easier from the beginning I'll know how to act! Thank you han-gyul..

I have a huge infatuation with K-pop, most of my music is korean stored under a "Nursery Rhymes" playlist so people won't know how bad my obsession is. I know the lyrics to some songs, and of course the catchiest choreography. Who cares if I don't know what the hell they're talking about..

This one is fairly recent:
Yesterday was my birthday (sweet 18!) and I went to the water park with some friends. Although I was smiling and laughing at our efforts to get on a water tube (very beautiful), I couldn't wait to get home to watch wednesday's episode of Coffee House. I wanted me some kang ji hwan (I want to backspace that last sentence cause it's a little creepy but promised myself to stay true to this post).

Before I used to be embarrassed of my obsession with korean culture because I wasn't of Korean descent, but I realized that I shouldn't be ashamed of it but accept it. Why should I spend time watching American reality T.V. shows that are supposed to make me laugh when I can watch Family Outing (first season), over and over again through veoh to sustain my comedic needs. It really is a matter of choice I don't want to half-ass laugh I want to LAUGH, and I don't want to shed a tear I want to bawl my emotions out (Story Sadder than Sadness). Knowing an actor(tress)'s profile and how they are connected to other actor(tress)es via dramas and movies makes me giddy, like I've accomplished something lol.

Kudos to the people who had enough patience to read my post.

p.s. I didn't watch You're Beautiful (even though I really want to now), because Jang Geun Suk's character killed Hong Gil Dong (Kang Ji Hwan), and I didn't want to "betray" him. I think I had an internal psychological warfare going through my mind to let my obsession get this far (I've realized my effort was silly btw).

Dammit i didn't want to be one of the people who had a ridiculously long-ass post. Oh well in the name of K-LOVE!

BTW your (javabeans and girlfriday combined into one person) song of the day music selections are so on-point with my style of music. I've just realized that now so I'm making my way back to your posts all the way to November 2009 (for now) to see what I've been missing. SO WORTH IT!

It Started With A... virtual marriage?

The beginning of the end for me began with Hwang Bo and Hyun Joong on We Got Married. I had been a Kdrama cynic, my niece has thought she is Korean (she's not) for the past 6 years by meeting friends at work that were Korean and getting caught up in Kdramas, Kpop, Kvariety, etc. The Hallyu wave had been picking up in my state (Hawaii) with the addition of Kdramas being added to local stations. My friends started watching Kdramas and were addicted, their moms, aunties, my mom, pretty much any ahjumma I knew started watching Kdrama, and I laughed at them.

So sometime in Fall of 2008, while I would be cruising in the living room of my house late at night, my niece would be watching this 'show' and be cracking up like a fool. I became curious as to what was sooo funny and would glance at the TV from time to time. Next thing I knew I was watching the whole episode and was being charmed to no end by JoongBo, but the end came too soon. My niece told me that I could find older episodes that I missed online so I watched those on YT. She then started watching this new Kdrama that was supposed to be the 'rage' and again I started watching it a little off and on and realized that Hyun Joong was on it. I didn't really start watching it until mid way through, so my niece told me of these Kdrama sites that you could watch back episodes on and that was it. I was pulled hook, line, and sinker into the Kdrama world because of Boys Over flowers.

I was sooo hooked I would stay up until 5 am and have to go to work at 8 am the next day. When I finally caught up with all the episodes, I would be jonesing waiting for the next ones to be released with subs. To help with the jonesing, I decided to watch the other dramas based on the original manga that had been previously released - Meteor Garden (all of them), all the Hana Yori Dangos- and then bought all the Boys Over Flowers mangas I could find to read. And then it was over, aigoo what to do... I took a break. But then I became bored and started watching more popular Kdramas, Jdoramas, Tdramas, etc. It's funny now after watching so many Kdramas that I realize how flawed BOF was (even though I knew when watching that some of the last episodes were crap), but it still remains one of my faves. The only other drams since then that I have cracked out on? You're Beautiful, lol.

To try and make myself feel better over finally succumbing to Kdramas- I'd tell my other nieces who weren't into it about how this Kdrama BOF was soo great - and I created a few more addicts. Some of them watched the Whole drama in a weekend. Even some of their mothers have become addicted (with some seriously needing intervention - LOL).

At this same time, my niece would be watching this other show online and be cracking up even more than with WGM. I just had to find out what it was and my obsession with Family Outing began which dragged me into kvarieties, and because of my love for Hyori and Daesung pulled me into the world of Kpop.

So now, I am firmly entrenched into the Hallyu world. When the fanaticism started I found Dramabeans online to feed the need as well as other Kpop sites. The only sad thing- my friends all gave up Kdramas because it was taking over their lives so I only have my niece to talk about Kdramas to so that kind of led to... me writing for a Kpop site. I am seriously considering taking some kind of Korean language classes so that I can better translate articles and watch dramas without having to wait for subs. Oettoke... otto kha jyo? Oh well, at least I've been enjoying the ride.

I became obsessed with Asian dramas when I first saw Full House. It was quirky and fresh. But the best thing I loved about the drama was that it had an ENDING! Most dramas *cough* American or Indian serials *cough* never have an ending, the story keeps on continuing till all the fans leave. Ever since then I became a kdrama-addict. I started watching more shows, one after the other. For me watching k-dramas was a way to escape from my world and just have no worries.

One night I was watching Coffee Prince on the computer, which was located in the family room. Since we only had 1 computer, the rule in my house was that first dibb goes to those who need to type a paper for school rather than personal use. So I fought with my sisters and told my mom that I needed to use the computer since I had a 10 page paper due the next day for Psychology class. When my sisters asked me what the topic was, I quickly said the biography about Sigmund Freud without thinking of the consequences. So there I was faking a paper for the sake of Coffee Prince, but as soon as it hit 12am the whole house was asleep. I had secretly loaded up all the videos in different tabs so it looked like I was searching for Freud's information. Next thing I know it was 5:30am and I'm one episode away from the end. I quickly took a water break but then heard footsteps in my parents room which was down the hallway. I quickly minimized and started typing away. My dad walks in asking if I stayed up all night to type for school, which I replied that I'm almost done. This in turn made my dad sit down and have a chat with me so I wouldn't be alone. My fingers were itching because I'm one episode away from the end and school started for me at 7am- I was planning on sleeping for at least 30 mins. I told my dad I'm done and pretended to close the computer and "went to sleep". As soon as I heard him leave the house at 6:15ish I quickly ran downstairs and resumed watching skipping the sleep. At school, I looked like a ghost with huge panda eyes (hey but at least I was happy). I practically passed out in Math class and got hit with a volleyball in gym and was sent to the nurse. There I discovered I had a 101F fever. I went home and had to stay in bed for 2 days (sleeping mostly) before I finally went back to school.

With every drama, I started acting just like them. During Full House time I kept on cleaning my room while during My Girl time I would smile and lie easily to my friends and because of Coffee Prince I started acting tomboy-ish (which scared my mom, haha!) I quickly adapted to the characters. I became obsessed with learning Korean that I made my own personal "Korean words journal" writing every new word I learned. I ate only with chopsticks. My hair permanently stayed in the side bob. Whenever I had leftovers I would mix everything up (just like Ji-eun in Full House) and eat it with a large spoon and a big bowl. I bought new fish in pairs and named them after the couples. I made my sisters watch with me every drama, until they themselves became obsessed. Whenever I see a pic of a Korean actor/actress I would stop whatever I'm doing and read the article (translated sometimes by Google!) But best of all, I have a secret journal in which I right down the attributes of a perfect man with Asian qualities the latest one added is of course Tae-kyung from Your Beautiful.....Yeah, I'm obsessed- Wouldn't you be too? ;)

Hello~
well frankly it's rather embarrassing for me to admit that i have a K-drama addiction. Solely because i make fun of my mother for watching too many Spanish soap operas.
that's right i'm latina and up to date i have watched 35+ korean dramas/movies since the end of 2009
frankly i'm not even sure how it started... well.. yeah...
the earliest memory of me watching a korean drama begins with Christmas night of last year where i locked myself in my room while everyone outside outside my room got shitfaced and watched the last 10 episodes of Coffee Prince.
Somehow listening to blasting Spanish music and drunken slurs didn't kill the effect of "i don't care if you're a man or an Alien!"
Jizzed.in.ma.pants.
lol
Anyhow,
My obsession for K-drama has gotten somewhat out of hand. I was one out of 200 other students across the country to enter this a Special training course in sailing. For it however as preparation (cuz the whole thing is a big competition between the 200 of us) we're suppose to take practice tests and get them scored by our instructor so we can be able to go in the course. However the date that i had set this exam to happen i started to watch Bad couple
well that drama happens to be 16 episodes long.. each one hour long...
so when my instructor called i was annoyed because Gi Chan had found out about Dang Ja being pregnant, anyways! not wanting to be bothered i went into the bathroom and called him back and tried to sound as casual as possible flushed the toilet and proceeded to explain to my instructed about the giant poop i just took because of some raw meat i ate. unfortunately i didn't check who had picked up the phone and it turned out my instructor's gorgeous son. (seriously, he's like someone out of a drama... argh <3 <3) when i quieted down i proceeded to hear the man of my dreams laughing his ass off while calling for his father to get on the phone.
on the bright side i got to finish watching the series... SOO GOOOD <3 <3 <3
and i took the test and passed ;D
anyways i watched You're Beautiful a while ago.
i'd say it's an A+ drama. i love the scene when Tae Kyung was talking about the stars in the sky and Mi Nyu was talking about Tae Kyung as the star she wants.
soo cutee <3 <3
anyways DramaBeans fighting! ;D

Just like almost everyone I had my share of absences and tardiness at work because of Korean dramas. Have used up all sorts of feigned illnesses (from headache to toothache to fever to flu to gastroenteritis) and traffic accidents/incidents (flat tires to heavy traffic to road constructions to witnessing an accident). Switched schedules with a bewildered co-worker (who has a 2:00am shift), so that I can catch the live broadcast of City Hall’s first 2 episodes. Requested my manager to grant me a Leave of Absence because I have to go to the province to attend to some legal matters urgently – because I will be “inheriting” a piece of land from a made-up-overly-generous aunt – just to be able to watch City Hall’s final episode.
Weird as it is, it seems like a handful of people who posted their anecdotes here started their drama addiction when they got hold of “MNIKSS”. And I’m one of them.
I quit university studies in order to prioritize working full time to support my family. I was very depressed and was having a hard time adjusting to the corporate world then. I was not myself. That time the re-run of MNIKSS is being shown in our country, and that happened to be the show that is on every time I go home. Out of curiosity I decided to buy a DVD (a bootleg copy at that) and the moment I put the disk in my player, I just can’t stop. I was laughing and crying while watching it. I finished watching at 4:30am. Since then, I’ve been addicted to Kim Sun Ah and Korean Dramas.
And what else have I done since then?
♥ Self-studied Korean. Initially for the purpose of being able to join a fan café, but later on to translate news, articles and interviews.
♥ Joined a subbing team.
♥ Manage threads in soompi.
♥ I ended up busting a 4-month-old DVD drive because of too much re-watch of MNIKSS.
♥ Wasn't planning of getting a credit card but applied for one - simply because I want to purchase the original MNIKSS DVD boxset from Yesasia.
♥ Pretended to be a factory worker applicant for Korea in order to attend a free Korean language workshop offered by the government (actually, I really applied for the position because I have to in order to be accepted, I just didn’t follow through after the language classes).
♥ My day isn't complete without a visit to Dramabeans and soompi.
♥ Had ONLY Korean songs on my music players (on my pc, netbook, mp3 player and phone). Okay, I have a few English songs – but those are English songs either included on Drama OSTs or played on dramas that are not included on OSTs.
♥ Keeps downloading a second copy (720p versions) of K-dramas even if my current computer can't handle it - thinking that in the future, once I have a better computer, I can re-watch these dramas in HD quality.
♥ My mom is now used to me calling her "Omma"
♥ SERIOUSLY planning to name my future kids Sam-Soon (MNIKSS) Cho-Hee (When It's At Night) and Mi-Rae (City Hall).
♥ Always having too few sleeping hours. I believe that and sleeping and kdrama watching are on different poles – they pushed themselves in the opposite direction.
♥ Recently had my first plane ride and first overseas travel. I went to Taiwan. For a vacation? No. To attend Kim Sun Ah’s Fan Meeting. It doesn’t matter that 1. Getting a tourist visa was verrrry difficult (I’m from the Philippines), 2. I am alone, 3. I don’t speak nor understand a single Chinese word, 4. I know no one in Taiwan.
♥ And I think the best part is I’m back to school now because of K-drama. Seeing Kim Sun Ah graduated last year motivated me to pursue my studies. “If Kim Sun Ah can do it, why can’t I?”. ^^

basically, i'm addicted. here are my various stories about various dramas.
To watch youre beautiful, i ended up staying up all night just so i wouldn't fall asleep so i could stream it. Although i dont know korean. And i went to school late because i wasnt ready in time XD then proceeded to spazz with my clueless classmates over what happened in the drama. well, what i could understand anyways.
To watch full house, one of my first obsessions, i stayed up for over 24 hours camped out in front of the desktop computer, with some soda and snacks on the desk. I ended up sleeping over 24 hours after finishing the entire drama.
coffee prince was pretty much the same story as youre beautiful. I stayed up and tortured my sister, who ended up watching it with me.
wonderful life ended up making me cry like a big baby, and my sister and i got mad at it, making my mom worried about us and our sleeping habits yet again.
i watched sweet 18 over the period of a weekend- this was when my internet connection was quite limited, which led to me pre-loading the next episode just in case my connection failed.
she is 19 was watched over a period of 2 weeks, thanks to still having dialup when i watched it. nobody called for a while, and when they did i yelled at whoever called before hanging up on them while the computer was trying to reconnect.

to watch some of iris [started late lol] i used my friends ipod touch before and after my AP tests.

Boys over flowers was watched three times so far; twice over the internet, and then watched with my family from netflix. [insert my mom saying, "jandi, dont go with junpyo, he is a jerk, pick red, he loves you" with extremely poor pronunciation, btw red is what she called jihoo, and to this day whenever i watch ss501 stuff she still calls him red although his hair is not red LOL]

my name is kim sam soon was also watched over netflix. My mom kept commenting on daniel henney being a hottie. She loved this drama, but kept asking me why they thought sam soon was fat ["she looks normal to me, not a stick like jandi" LOL]

if i get picked to win, i will actually change the region of my new laptop's dvd player permanently to watch you're beautiful. <3

I realize I'm a little late to the punch, but I thought I'd share in any case, and I'll try to keep it brief.

Basically, I was a retroactive drama watcher for a long time. I couldn't be bothered to wait around for episodes of currently airing dramas whene there were so many old ones I hadn't seen. But then I got really hooked on the first few episodes of Painter of the Wind, back when it was awesome and before it so sadly fell apart. Suddenly my weeks revolved around waiting for the next episodes, disecting previous episodes, following the soompi thread obsessively, and basically spending more time and energy on the drama than on my homework.

And then, between episodes six and seven my computer completely crashed. Which was beyond unnacceptable. So I skipped all my classes and spent the day in the tech services office. It's a good thing they fixed my laptop or I might have had to go out and buy another one because I was GOING to watch episode 7 that night no matter how much the universe tried to stop me.

Looking back, I kind of cringe at my level of obsession with that drama, especially since it didn't really turn out that well in the end. But it had so many really great elements, and was very different from anything I'd seen before. And it really intorduced me to the world of internet drama watching.

From a strictly objective viewpoint I'm not sure if the drama crazies isn't more of a sickness than anything else. But of course I can't be objective.

There was one time where i had to go camping. So, to fullfill my drama needs, i downloaded episodes of the drama onto my ipod. Watched it on the 4 hour car drive and it was really awesome. my cousins started staring at me and wondered what i was looking at and then they joined into watching it too xD
it was pretty funny, and now they LOVE watching k-dramas :D

Aww, I missed the giveaway :'( (I'm looking at you, summer class midterms and papers!) But I feel like sharing my addiction after reading all of these awesome comments! Dramas had ruined my life, but also changed it for the better!

It started in 2006; I was a sophomore in a pretty rigorous HS and I was starting off high school well, had excellent grades. Then my friend told me about the jdrama Nobuta Wo Produce. I'm southeast asian but i was totally hooked. Then came the deluge of those wonderful 2005 and 2006 shows: My girl, goong, delightful gorl, and SAMSOONSAMSOON. I forgot about doing my homework and stopped studying for exams to catch one more episode of coffee prince. Naturally, my grades suffered as I became a junior and then a senior and I quit a lot of the extracurricular activities I was in to go home two hours earlier to watch drama.

Then it came time to apply to colleges over winter break my senior year...vowed to stay away from dramas because i couldn't screw up my apps, this was the most important hurdle i had to overcome in HS. Years of SAT prep, stressing over my chances, scoping out my intraschool competition for the best unis (ivies and top 20s),etc. would go to waste if i didn't churn out some stunnig apps and ESSAYS. Unfortunately, my will was broken within two seconds of making that vow, because I started watching The World that they live in (so i can worship binnie) and got hooked on The painter of the wind. I kept watching until the wee hours of december 31st, 2008. My conscience finally took over and screamed at me, for now I had to complete 17 applications (which is about 13 essays selling myself to the schools) in maybe 48 hours. I downed two 5 hour energy drinks, got horrible chills because of them, and had a mental breakdown after a fire broke out in my kitchen while i was writing my upenn essays. luckily i put it out before anything got seriously damaged, but i was so rattled that i gave up on 5 of the schools i planned on applying to and half heartedly submitted the forms for the rest, late by as much as 3-4 hours for some schools (the apps are submitted online) because i wanted to watch a few more episodes of Love Marriage. Needless to say, I was rejected by all but one school (a community college that accepts everyone).

i then fell into a huge depression, which i sought relief from by binge eating and watching more dramas. I was absent 45 days out of 188 my senior year (mostly after january) so that i could watch dramas and feel sorry for myself. i gained about thirty pounds, weighing in at around 140 by graduation. i felt so pathetic i didn't bother taking any pictures and went home right after the ceremony to go watch more drama to take my mind off of everyone else's happiness.

flash forward to early 2010. I caught the first two episodes of Wish Upon a Star/Stars Falling from the Sky, and I was hooked, more than ever (I dreamed about the series more than a few times during its runtime). I also cried a lot when I thought about how Palgang must have felt loosing her footing in the world after her parents died and she became homeless; I felt the same way about my life. Watching her resilience and her determination, and even her desperation as the show progressed inspired me to pick myself up from the ground. I decided to reapply for transfer to the schools I got rejected from in 2009, but this time far more meticulously. When she got her happy ending with Kangha and the siblings, I cried; I was so glad her hard work and perseverence had paid off. Mine had too; a month later I had gotten in all of the schools I applied to (except Harvard, waitlisted there), and finally have a chance to attend my dream school (columbia) this fall (if i can appeal my fin aid package successfully). I also started working out, and lost most of the weight I gained in 2009 (my skin looks so much better too!). And I still watch dramas till dawn, but now I can multitask better ;)

Phew that was long! Just wanted to get that off my shoulders.

I dont know if a winner has been set yet, but ill put this in anyway....Im one of those people that are the hidden lovers, where I just cant read or watch if someone is watching me in the same room, its a phobia that I have. I scream, kick, and get violent if they stay, just so I can resume my...hobby? Well, I used to be able to turn of a show midway through the episode, used to be able to say "well Im tired, bedtime"...UNTIL You're Beautiful came up. Now, its REALLY hard for me to be patient, to watch something that Ive never heard of (when it first came out, i had to wait weekly for every single episode) but from that moment i couldnt do ANYTHING without screaming about Gominam....soon i found myself TALKING about it. I got all my classmates to even watch the 1st episode, on my birthday one of my classmates even made me a pig-rabbit (she sowed it from scratch...i was touched) and made me a cd of all the songs. Now that turned into a pretty bad idea since i started singing it ALLL the time. Once I was blasting it on my headphones and I didnt even realize i was screaming the lyrics on the top of my lungs, with plenty of emotion in a store....until an elderly man tapped me on the shoulder and asked me to keep it down. THAT is what this korean drama has made me do!!!! This is the drama that literally changed how people have thought of me and even talk to me. :) And im really happy about it!!

So I put off watching any k-dramas until about two weeks ago because I thought they would all be like those crappy never-ending soap operas. HA! How wrong was I?! I clicked on Personal Taste on Hulu... and my life has never been the same.

I bought the DVD of Personal Taste immediately after watching it online over a week, and watched it again in one weekend as soon as it came. My first love... Park Kae In + Jeon Jin Ho forever!!!

I fell completely and utterly in love with Coffee Prince and stayed up until 4 AM on three consecutive workdays to watch it. Work then sucked. I was a zombie. I didn't care. All I thought about was Go Eun Chan and Choi Hang Kyul. SUCH a good drama. My favorite.

I have ignored calls from my boyfriend and friends, and closed my blinds so my neighbors wouldn't know that I was watching Boys Over Flowers until 6 AM. Oh my god though, "eppu-4"... who wouldn't?

I'm learning bits of Korean, which is maybe a good thing? I find myself saying "omasumida!" and "sarangjae!" and "unnie!" in my head randomly during the day.

I got my sister addicted to Coffee Prince, and she stayed up until 3 AM watching it.

I'm a graduate student and I should be working on my thesis at all times, but all I want to do is watch k-dramas nonstop. I don't even want to sleep. Who needs sleep?

Favorite k-dramas so far:
Coffee Prince (I cried SO MUCH and I'm still sad it's over)
Personal Taste
Boys Over Flowers
Playful Kiss (although Oh Ha Ni is really annoying)

I'm going to watch You're Beautiful from reading other comments. Any other suggestions?

i remember how i ended up watching koreand dramas like it was yesterday, but it's about 3years now i guess, i'm african girl(somalian) we live in finland and my mother had always complain about how i watch what she calls indecent programs, you know western programs...especially american tv shows where they kisses a lot...etc, anyway my poor mother thought that the only way she can save me is to buy us satellite tv, there are a lot of Somali channels, religious channels, and Arab channels...i thought that what am i gonna do now, we had internet but i didn't know anyhting about Korean dramas, the only thing i used was Msn, one day i was really bored and i was just browsing channels, AND IT WAS THERE ON DUBAI TV MY NAME IS KIM SAM SOON, OHMY the episode was endsing but when i saw how she was talking and acting the girl was just amazing, and than i saw HYUN BIN AND DANNIEL HENNY
....OH LORD THAT FEELING...ofcourse i didn't understand they dupped arabic, anyway i googled and i found it with english subs and ohmygod it was amazing story i watched the whole drama within 24h:D:D:D..ofcourse i didn't go to school next day..my mom couldn't belive it , at the beginning she was happy that since i didn't watch american tv shows but when she saw me sitting 24h on the computer, she wasnät happy at all, till this day she curse the day i found k-dramas, especially when says to her it's all thanks to her i found them...and i'm really thankful...but once u go k-drmas there there's no turning back...now i'm senior i have exams coming...a lot of them..and i'm watching more than 5 k-dramas at the same time, secret garden, daemull, Mary Stayed Out All Night, fugitive plan b, gloria...i'm watching them now (playfull kiss,Sungkyunkwan Scandal,Dr. Champ..i ive just finished watching them..)..

So... although this topic came up a long time ago I wanted to post my most recent K-drama addiction to share with everyone since I just now discovered your site as of like.. one week ago??? or something like that... Anyways... So...

Just recently I have finished the drama "The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry" starring Kim Bum and Park Jin Hee. I finished within 4 days of watching that drama staying up from the early afternoon hours (even at like 4,5 PM) all the way until 6 AM even though I had school the following day. I did that consecutively and although I was quite tired the next day it was well worth it! I don't regret a single minute of doing that for the sake of watching the show (via YouTube of course since I have no other way to access the show...) I also LOVE LOVE LOVE this drama's recaps done by you guys SO SO MUCH. Its like when I'm reading what you guys right, its exactly what I want to say to the characters!!! After watching this show I find it to be absolutely THE BEST drama that I have EVER watched (maybe because I don't really remember the ones prior this one that I have watched but it doesn't matter to me). This drama is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!!! I don't think that I've ever seen a drama that is so REAL before. The actors portray the characters so well that its mindblowing!!! Also after watching this series I've become more and more intrigued with Park Jin Hee. This is the very first drama of hers that I've watched and she was really really good. No where near dissapointing. I loved her character the most aside from Kim Bum's character of course for being so persistent and not giving up on her career and love life. I find the drama to be really inspiring actually in the life aspect as well as the love aspect. To me it feels that what the drama's character's have to go through in their lives, it just goes to show that persistence and determination will only bring you good in the end. Although things may seem tough at times but once you overcome them it only makes you into a stronger person. I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE the relationship between Ha Min Jae and Lee Shin Young in this drama so much!!!! Their relationship is so REAL and awe inspiring. I can see that age truly does not matter when it comes to the one that you truly love such as this couple here in the drama. This show was so different from all the other ones since it brought the audience a different sense of liking. It wasn't the typical sappy teary eyed ones that you feel saddened about or love but then forget right away after a while but its the one that sticks with you forever after imprinting a huge impact on you as a person after watching it. There is no way to express how much I love this drama. I also got my mom hooked onto the drama soon after I finished watching it of course (I just HAD to show it to her since it was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Although this wasn't really a drama addiction story (I guess you could say that I have started to REALLY REALLY like K-Dramas just not to the extent of obsessiveness which is a VERY good thing for now), I still love to watch K-dramas nonetheless. The last thing that I would like to say is that your recaps are always highly enjoyable to read and never get boring or tiring. I <3 them just as much as I love this drama and thats A LOT. =D I can't wait to watch another drama yet again that provides the same realistic feeling such as this one =D When that time comes the all nighters will start again. haha

ok, so I have recently discovered that I have a K-obsession. It all began when I meet the first asian in my life. No i did not like him but anyways the way he talked was cool so googled korea and a huge list of K-dramas showed up so.... thus began my addiction. My first drama i began watching on my Crunchyroll app on my iPod and it was The First Shop Of Coffee Prince.

I fell in love with ALLLLLL OF IT. THE ACTORS, THE PLOT, KOREA, EVEN THE SOUND EFFECTS. Soon after I began saying " AHHHH SHAAAAA" when ever i got frustrated. Then i watched Boys Over Flowers and watched the whole season in 2 days. I PULLED 2 ALL NIGHTERS. I WAS FANTASTIC Soon after that i began to all in love with SS501's "because im stupid" song and thus began my kpop addiction. it really is something else. i mean i went all out, i googled every possible kpop singer/band and now my iPod is about to blow.

KOREA IS GREAT,, BUT WHAT IS EVEN BETTER, ARE THEIR DRAMAS. WHO CANT FALL IN LOVE WITH THEM. now i keep up with the latest actors, models, songs, and dramas. :)

I know the contest is over but my serious K-Drama addiction caused my grades to fall this semester. Let's just say my parents were not very happy and almost stopped paying for my school. Luckily that was in the early days of my k-drama love affair; I would like to think that I have more restraint now.

the craziness i've done because of my kdrama addiction :

1. it is not once or twice that i lied to my boyfriend *we are living in 2 seperate town and can only see each other on weekend* that i'm feel sick or i need to accompany my mom somewhere just because i'm so addicted to a drama and wanted to finished it during weekend instead of having a nice little date with him

2. instead of studying for chemistry quiz with an 'evil' teacher that always put her best to make the hardest question ever, i watched prosecutor princess until morning and sleep during the test, and yep i do need a repetition for that one.

3. it's not once or twice i asked my boyfriend to re-act the scene from drama that i loved, from back hug, piggy back, asking him to cook me porridge when i was sick. etc

4. i literally went 8 km far south from my current town *which is a small village in Germany* carrying my laptop just to get a wifi signal in the nearest town, so that I can downloaded the last 4 episodes of hit tv series the moon that embrace the sun. I sit there, in a small cafe from morning til late afternoon just to download my most addicted kdrama this year.

5. when i do my internship in one of pharmaceutical industries during my studies, i've been sooo addicted to my girlfriend is a gumiho. i can not stop my self, i even watch it during a meeting with my boss and cry while watching it. i sucesfully made my boss asking me what's wrong, and i just can mumble 'eye infection' before running to the toilet

i'm still 22 and free right now, but i don't think i can stop this addiction even though in fututre years i'll be married and have children of my own. because when i have drama land, i don't need fairy tales

My very first kdrama was "My Girl" in the summer of 2006 after i finished grade11. I had lots of korean frnds back in high school and one of them asked me to watch this. AND oMG ever since then I've been addicted to Kdramas.
By now i've literally watched a total of 80 kdramas (plus many more tht im not counting since i lost interest in them half way).

I basically dont have a social life and literally any free time i get in summer is spent in watching dramas. This has very very negatively my grades in university cause for some reason i keep watching kdramas a week b4 my finals rather than studying!!

My most addicting moments:

- Im someone tht if i like the story i get sooo into it tht i forget to eat, forget to sleep and forget to do anything actually. I marathon thru the whole drama until its done and after its over i keep obssessing over it and watching my favourite moments from the drama. I know i might sound crazy -- but yeah after rewatching it again and again i slowly start getting over it -- and moving on with my dull reality.

1) I watched my girl in less than 2 days. just marathoned right thru the 16 eps.

2) last sem -- we get reading week (one week off) in uni to study for midterms here. anyways, i had 5 midterms after reading week all in 4 days. I basically watched "temptation of wife" in the reading week instead of studying --- and ended up putting all my MTs on stake.

3) same as one of the above posts -- i use to stuff my clothes under my door so the light would not show and my parents would think i was "sleeping" but instead i wud stay up all night watching dramas. And just as i use to hear footsteps of my parents walking around 7am -- i use to actually go to sleep. now thts just sad.

4) now tht i think about it --- my uni grades have suffered only because of dramas --- i've gotten addicted to many BOF, Coffee Prince, illijimae, full house and gotten really depressed over countless many such as winter Sonata, snow queen, autumn tale, soulmate etc----- u seriously cannot write finals and midterms with such heavy emotions and mood swings.

5) Lately i find im always depressed. this i think is becasue i watch alot of melodrama .. i cry all the time! something is wrong with me

6) a day before my final -- i was watching a drama that i had previously seen b4 -"coffee prince"- and basically tried studying but cudnt and ended up doing so bad in the course!! I dont know y i do this --- i think b4 finals i just cant take the pressure anymore and start venting out using kdramas --- which completely kills my grade.

7) my dad was sooo mad at me last year -- tht he took my laptop -- so for the past year i didnt have a laptop -- however, we do have a desktop at home which has internet -- so during finals, guess where im always "STUDYING" .....ahhh i just feel horrible writing all this. Last year, my fall sem went well cause i didnt watch any drama -- but winter sem went horrible -- dropped my gpa by (.4) cause i was too addicted with "temptation of wife" and later b4 finals i was watching "coffee prince"........

8) I've had too many addicting moments in my life. To sum up -- if i find a good story i just get super into it and have no life. like in the start of summer i completely got addicted to 'Shut up Flower Boy Band" and i might have re-seen some of the memorable scenes more than 1000X --- basically i re-watch my fav scenes from the drama im addicted to -to the extent tht i feel sick and just dont want to see it again. Or yet another way to get over a drama, is to start another drama right away. Just recently, I watched "coffee house" and i again finished it in 2 days -- really engrossing and awesome drama!

9) Lastly, I basically cant identify myself with anything other than kdramas. I dont like english movies anymore or bollywood movies. All i want to do is -- find a good kdrama and watch it OR just rewatch my previious favourites. Im a little picky with the dramas i watch -- but when i do find them i just go crazy. I have learnt sooo many korean words in the past years i've been watching kdramas. I've also made a small notebook where i record some korean words i hear in the drama and write english meanings next to them. Next semester, I am FINALLLY taking korean in uni --- this is so optional plus im not even getting credit for this cause its a first year course and im over my first year requiremtn -- but im taking it no matter what -- cause its my passion -- and i feel tht if i dont do it now -- i may never get to do it again. Im basically paying extra $550 for taking first year korean tht i dont even get credit for basically.

---> So, usually i try not to start any kdrama once university starts .. cause i know myself -- i just go crazy and watch it to the extent tht my grades suffer ----- Thou I always try not to do this --- exceptions do occur like last sem (winter) which was the worst semester i've ever had so far!

--> advice to others: DONOT WATCH KDRAMAS DURING SCHOOOL --- ITS ADDDICTING!!!!!!!! my brother calls it my drugs! LOL
but seriously, in the end, I know my grades have suffered -- but the Kdramas i watched during those times --- I REALLLY REALLY LOVED and CHERISH THEM FOREVER<3<3<3

Ohh i just wanted to add --

due to my kdrama kcraze ..all the songs on my ipod are korean. mostly from the dramas -- i try to find eng translation for some songs tht i really like -- but otherwise i just listen to them and seriously i feel like i understand all the emotions thou i dont know wht they mean.

Hopefully, after taking korean for one semester I'll get a better understanding of the language and eventually b fluent in the language years from now.

It was great reading alot of the shared stories on here! some gave me good laughs and say "meee tooo!" LOL GOOO K-dramas!!!

Ummm hello I know I am pretty late but still here is my story
It was last year that I discovered k drama ( I was 18 years old and I was in my second year of med school )
I was already know as an addicted to american movies and series xp my friend kept nagging me to try and watch some asians and I was like "oh please you can't even tell them appart" and I kept resisting until one day the internet gods made it impossible for me to watch streaming sooo I was dead bored and decided to try those misterious asians XD andI started with boys over flwers
I think noo need to tell more about it I just couldn't stop since then
I watched more than 70 dramas skippiing sleep, lectures and of course spending some quality time with my parents telling them that I needed to study (the most perfect aliby for me since I do need to do that but unfortunatly don't)
NOW while writing this little story I am 4 days away from my exams and I am totally screwed for real
Sooo I have a liiiittle advice...if you are in med school please for your own benefit don't come anywhere near asian dramas
