U-Know Yunho takes the lead in Goong musical

Now THIS I can see!: Dong Bang Shin Ki’s leader U-Know Yunho has been cast in the lead role of Prince Shin in the musical adaptation of the phenomenally popular drama series Goong, playing the role originated by Joo Ji-hoon in the drama version.

Too bad this couldn’t have been Yunho’s acting debut, rather than the ill-fated and flaw-ridden soccer drama Heading to the Ground. As the leader of a hugely popular idol band, Yunho has already proven his dancing and singing skills, and making the transition from the pop stage to the musical stage seems more suited to him (and more forgiving a jump should he falter). Taking the lead role in a drama series as his acting debut was, unfortunately, biting off more than he could chew, but I’d actually really love to see him in the musical.

The musical version of Goong is produced by Group Eight and will open at the Seoul National Museum’s theater on September 8.

Don't you still have to know how to act in musicals, as well? It's not just song and dance, but people still have to create emotions and convey dialogue. Yuhno, sadly needs help in that department.

OMG OMG OMG OMG!!

Although #2 Hmm makes a good point, a large bulk of what it takes to make a musical successful is dependent on the singing and dancing, not so much on acting, relative to dramas where everything depends on great acting. So if he massively fails still in the acting department, that's at least 1 of three aspects only. I think he'll push through, he always endeavors to work hard toward anything he does.

Again, OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!

@ Lucy,
When Junsu filmed his mozart musical, there were a couple of fancams but unfortunately these kinds of musicals don't go on DVD or TV. If you can follow one of the dbsk sites, they'd usually post up fancams, and I am sure, there would be some. Maybe not fully though, the fans are quite respectful in that area (trying to anyway).

I'm excited to see this actually. I admire Junsu's mozart. But I am dbsk bias ^__^

Why am I not surprised? In Goong, Joo Ji Hoon actually reminded me (physically) of Yunho -- who looks good in that prince costume, by the way. I hope he'll do much better in this musical :D

wow, Yunho looks good in the Imperial outfit... XD

looks like the musical is a recompense due to the regrets that the "true" sequel can't be made...

@10
it's actually "seja jeoha" (世子邸下 세자저하) in Joseon Dynasty speak...
(it's actually Joseon Dynasty language which the original manhwa used..I'm still following the manhwa thru onemanga)

the series (Princess Hours) actually used Korean Empire speak; the way you've said it sounds like it should have been "taeja jeonha" (太子殿下 태자전하).

You've got to be kidding me. Yunho in a musical?!?!? He's not a very strong singer to begin with so I can't imagine him pulling off a lead role in a musical. In fact, his castmates will probably outsing him on stage. And before his fans jump down my throat, yes, I've seen his performances and there's a reason why he always gets the least parts in DBSK songs.

this could really help him
broadway shows show a lot of exaggerated movements because
it's needed for those far away to see and all

many ppl dont know but a lot of famous actors and actresses in america
started off with plays, dramas and broadways before they actually
starred in movies

this could actually help yunho
the more he does shows, the better he will be at his acting if he's serious

now.........what about changmin's drama??????

but singing wise, i gotta say the rest of dbsk outshines him
they are obviously stronger singers (changmin esp but hes the power of the group)

GASP! Yunho... I would love to see him in this musical. I totally agree with you dramabeans, he should've done this as his acting debut, instead of starring in a sports drama, which was a bad decision considering the recent stretch of sports drama failures, and his non-existent acting experience. The only aspect I would be worried about for this musical is his singing ability... he's not that great of a singer :3, but his appearance and his dancing abilities do seem to fit perfectly. I hope he does well with this, he needs something else besides leading dbsk, now that dbsk is over.

Yunho is the weakest singer in DBSK, so I am skeptical about this. Junsu was great in Mozart because he has a good singing voice (maybe the best of the DBSK guys). Still it's not his performances that was recorded for the CD they released of that musical (but a musical artist's).

Perhaps Yunho only will do a few show, just like Junsu did? The fans will still go nuts and it will be a huge success. And he needs some lovin' right now, so good for him!

I don't agree that he has the weakest voice in DBSK. He didn't have many singing parts on DBSK so now he has the chance to show his singning skills better (and ,honestly, I was never that crazy about Junsu's voice).
Yunho has shown that he is getting better and better as far as singing and acting goes so I am confident he can do this. I am curious about how they will turn this story into a stage musical though

definitely proved he is the best rookie in the musical scene

yunho will be pitiful if he will flank this musical again just like his drama.

@ Artemis

Junsu won the Best New Actor Award at the Korean Musical Awards, just so you know. Junsu did not particate in the ost becoz there are still legal problems about releasing music in korea. Why do you think until now junsu is not releasing music/songs there.

@39. Thank you for the info - I didn't know it was because of the legal stuff Junsu was not picked for the CD release, but it makes sense. The fancams I saw of the musical, I thought he was great.

@ oh! tht! chick! (21)

welcome...

for your suggestion, well, you're also wrong (LOL at that, anyone can make mistakes... :D)...

The complete forms are actually:
*wangseja (王世子 왕세자) in Joseon Dynasty speak
*hwangtaeja (皇太子 황태자) in Korean Empire speak
They shortened it cause, well, it's too long to pronounce!!! How can you expect palace people (including the royal family and the various ministers) to mutter "wangseja jeoha" / "hwangtaeja jeonha" all day long without getting their tounges tied and tired at the same time, 'no?

@Artemis: Junsu does not have the best voice out of DBSK. He has great technique but voice? No; his voice is unique but it's also not to the taste of many fans and in my opinion, very overrated. Yoochun's voice, while not the strongest nor the most polished, is the most commercially viable because of its husky quality. Jaejoong is the most well rounded singer with great range, suited for rock and ballads. Changmin has a powerful voice and can hit the high notes. Yunho is bass and his singing has improved by spades over the years. He wasn't able to showcase his voice in DBSK because he's not one of the main vocals but this musical will give him the opportunity to show everyone his abilities. Besides, he didn't land the role in this musical because he was in SM, he had to audition for it, like everyone else.

Lila, how do you know he auditioned for it? From the looks of it, SM seems to have its fingers in this whole production, with having several SM artists being cast in this musical. And that makes me fear that it'll turn out to be another Heading to the Ground.

And yes, Yunho has improved his singing over the years but unfortunately, it will never be good enough to be a main vocal. That's why he pretty much always has the least lines in DBSK songs or is relegated to the rap parts.

@ Lila lol, you know why junsu is considered the best? its his skill as a great live performer. Live singing is where true talent shines. Anyone can sound good in recording and yet fail in live performance. I know you love yunho, but lets just wait and see haha. He will fail in this musical, i can see it. His voice is not that strong and good to carry a live performance in the musical. Yesung who got a good voice also was not acknowledged during his run in his musical, what more with yunho who sing nasally and unnatural tone? I'm speaking realistically here.

I agree with Lila somewhat....JS is definately the best singer, but the sound/tone of his voice itself is a big turn off to many people.....it's very light, high and husky so it sounds like he always has a cold and took a bit of helium....definately the best technique and vocal abilities tho....as for YH, I dont think we can judge his musical singing abilities until we hear it.....he hasn't been able to showcase his vocals to it's full potential in DBSK cuz he's always overshadowed by Jaesu who are the main singers.....acting wise, I actually think that Yunho and Yoochun have the most potential...HTTG failed mainly because of the bad script and director/PD.

Lisa: it was reported on the news that many people auditioned for this part and the director/producer (I think same one as the Goong drama) who ended up choosing the cast gave his explanation as to why YH was chosen...and that's due to his singing, dancing and acting abilities..as well as his great stage presence.....he felt that YH fit the prince shin role to the T.

Junsu is currently no. 1 male solo singer in japan....check

haha and where is yunho now? flopped drama, flopped MJ Tribute concert, and this new musical where sm is the producer, sure sure he auditioned lol
Yunho's acting in his drama even though its already edited and did lots of retakes still sucks big time, how much more in this musical where he have to do it live??

all i can say is good luck yunho lol

All the news I've read have said nothing about auditions. The producers just state reasons why they chose him. This leads me to suspect that they chose him just for his star power to fill seats in the theater with fangirls, similar to a Kim Hyun Joong situation.

I'll admit, I started listening to kpop because of DBSK and I've been a fan of theirs from the beginning. I've had to lower my standards for good singing in the kpop music industry but I just can't bring myself to listen to Yunho's bad singing (which is even worse live). In the end, I can't imagine that he's going to be any good in this musical. Junsu was able to do well because he had the singing ability to pull it off.
