Coffee House: Page 14

I really liked this episode. This drama is heading into somewhat more serious/emotional territory, but it’s not getting so melodramatic that it turns me off. There’s angst, but not ridiculous, drawn-out, unnecessary amounts of it. We get a lot of character reveals and insights in this episode, and I always love it whenever a drama does that.

PAGE 14 RECAP

Jin-soo waits for Eun-young to change out of her wedding gown, but her zipper is stuck and needs help. She doesn’t relish having to ask for help with the air so strained between them, and babbles nervously while he works the zipper.

Jin-soo has been unusually quiet ever since realizing that she’s marrying Ji-won, and Eun-young finds his silence unnerving. She had expected some kind of reaction — sarcasm, anger, laughter, anything. In fact, it was fear of his reaction that made her think it was fortunate that she would marry while he was away. He wryly notes his great timing.

She explains about the 100 dates she went on, and how surprised she was when Ji-won persevered. She had assumed he would call it quits within the first 50, but when she hit 70 and he showed no signs of giving up, she started getting nervous. She explains, “That’s the kind of marriage it is.”

Jin-soo successfully gets the zipper loose, but Eun-young doesn’t want him to unzip her fully. In her alarm to keep him from full unzipping, she abruptly jerks away and loses her balance, her hand outstretching to grab something to keep her upright. Jin-soo prevents her from falling, but her hand catches on his pocket and the diamond ring flies out, clattering on the ground.

They both watch it fall and Eun-young registers the diamond ring with wide eyes. It’s like Jin-soo is so vulnerable in this moment that he doesn’t address it at all; he picks up the ring silently, then offers to wait outside.

At dinner, Jin-soo (seemingly) overcompensates by acting casual and careless. But when she gets a phone call from Ji-won (which she ignores until he urges her to answer), he looks at her with particular attention, especially as she refers to him not by name but as Writer Lee.

Ji-won wants to talk to Jin-soo, so despite the latter’s reluctance, he takes the phone. Ji-won is his usual boisterous self as he laughingly relates the misery of the past two years. His forced celibacy put him in such bad moods that he would snap at his secretary and then be forced to apologize, and scrupulously kept his distance from all women.

They’re keeping up this outer facade that all is fine and dandy, but Eun-young excuses herself when Ji-won asks her about the details. I suppose it’s telling that Eun-young doesn’t feel comfortable discussing her wedding plans in front of Jin-soo — either that, or she thinks he’ll feel uncomfortable and is trying to be extra solicitous of his feelings.

In any case, she continues her phone call outside, and mouths to Jin-soo, “Sorry.” Jin-soo smiles at her like it’s all okay, but when he turns away it’s clear he feels upset, the way he shovels the food into his mouth glumly, when at the beginning of dinner he had been eating with such gusto. Sad.

Seung-yeon comes home later that night, dressed in the fancy clothes she’d bought for her lunch with Jin-soo. Her family notices, and wonders if she’s dating someone.

Despite spending half her monthly salary on her new outfit, Seung-yeon recalls how Jin-soo commented that she looks grown-up now, and she smiles as though the cost were worth that validation.

Her PD boss calls her, having heard about her lunch meeting with Jin-soo. Taking that as positive sign that she is sufficiently friendly with the famous writer, the PD pressures Seung-yeon to request an interview. She answers that Jin-soo isn’t the type who would agree, but he urges her to try anyway, and captures Seung-yeon’s attention with mention of compensation. If she scores this interview, she’ll be looking at a raise. Particularly in light of her recent expenditures, this is mighty tempting.

After dinner, Eun-young asks Jin-soo what his big news was, now that he knows hers. He doesn’t answer straightforwardly, but instead asks which of four choices she’d like that news to be: resuming his writing, winning the lotto, finding a girlfriend, or running for political office.

Eun-young answers that of those, she’d prefer the third — the girlfriend — because she’d worried about him. Jin-soo answers that she’s right, despite her disbelief: “You said you’d like for it to be Number 3. So it is Number 3.”

Thinking back to the ring, she asks if that’s meant for his girlfriend, then. Is that why he came back to Korea? She receives another surprise to see that Jin-soo drives now — it’s another sign that maybe he has changed.

In the car, she muses that he must be telling the truth. She had thought that when he started using cell phones again and driving, it would be a good time for him to meet a woman. She asks about his girlfriend, and once again he asks for her preference, offering her four possible choices. Again, he tells her she picked the right scenario — she’s a Korean woman he met at a bar while abroad.

Another question — when is he leaving? — prompts yet another multiple-choice quiz. Would she prefer he leave tomorrow, a week from now, after the wedding, or whenever he feels like it? She says she’d like him to see her wedding, so he readily agrees to leave after it.

I think Eun-young is looking for some sort of sign, some hint as to how he really feels about all this, but Jin-soo isn’t going to give it to her. She starts to add that he doesn’t have to stay just on her account, and that he can leave as he wants to — but he cuts her off, saying that he wants to attend her wedding. That dims her mood somewhat. At first I thought she was disappointed that he is giving her the impression that he’s fine with her marrying because she still has feelings for him, but now I think it’s because he’s acting so cool and cavalier about everything that she feels he’s shutting her out.

I like the above shot with the car, because as with the piano shot in the last episode, this one puts another large object between them, which mirrors their emotional distance.

Eun-young hears that Jin-soo is staying at a hotel and invites him to move back into the writing workshop, which is currently unoccupied. Ji-won had suggested it, in fact.

He surprises her by agreeing, and adds, “If it makes you happy.” He shocks her further by offering to buy a cell phone tomorrow, so he can be reached easily. It’s all quite a lot to take in, and Eun-young goes home in a daze, mulling over all these new changes in him.

Seung-yeon returns to the book cafe for the first time in ages, and asks one of the baristas for Jin-soo’s phone number. She hears about the latest developments — Eun-young’s engagement, Jin-soo staying in the studio again — with surprise. She hasn’t remained in touch with the book cafe family, so all of this is news to her.

When Seung-yeon drops by the studio, Jin-soo immediately knows that she’s here to request an interview. Seung-yeon tells him that even though she knows he’d never agree, she has to at least make an effort for the sake of her job. Feebly, she asks for him to grant her program a short interview, which he flatly declines.

A phone call interrupts, and Seung-yeon is shocked that he answers. Or that he even has a cell phone in the first place. It’s Eun-young, inviting him downstairs for coffee with Ji-won, which he declines. However, they’ve agreed to dinner plans that evening, and both Ji-won and Eun-young urge him to bring his girlfriend. They’re both incredibly curious about her, and Eun-young adds that with him declining to give details, it sounds like a lie to her. Furthermore, she wants to see his girlfriend for herself in order to be at ease.

Once more, Jin-soo agrees without putting up a fight, which startles Eun-young. Only that means now he has to find a girlfriend. Isn’t it convenient that Seung-yeon happens to be standing by?

She’s not exactly jumping to agree, but it doesn’t help when Jin-soo mutters to himself, “Ah man, everyone thinks I have high standards. Would they even fall for it?” And he gives her the up-and-down, making her cringe uneasily. But he does dangle the perfect bait in front of her — if she acts as his fake girlfriend, he’ll be a guest on her radio show.

And then, Dong-wook is back. All decked out in a sharp suit and driving his red sports car, he arrives at the publishing office, where nobody recognizes himself at first. His appearance is a grand relief to Eun-young, though, because she has gone out of her way to try to find him.

As chance has it, Dong-wook has heard of her new book cafe opening, and understands that Eun-young will want him to resume his manager’s duties under her. However, he has a slightly different proposal this time: He wants to be her business partner, not her employee.

Dong-wook has clearly done well for himself in the time he has been away, judging from his appearance and the confident way he carries himself. But we’ll have to wait to get the backstory on him in another episode.

Seung-yeon agrees to the mad scheme of posing as Jin-soo’s girlfriend, but not without a lot of reservations. She agonizes over how she’ll be able to pull this off to Jin-soo’s satisfaction, because if the act doesn’t work, he won’t agree to be her guest. With his super-picky criteria for a girlfriend and high standards, she has to somehow pass muster with him AND his dinner companions.

At least one thing she doesn’t have to worry about is what to wear, because Jin-soo delivers a box to her office containing an expensive head-to-toe outfit. Inside, he has included a note outlining the details of their “love story.” Hahaha. How like the novelist to pen his own fake romance to fit his artistic standards.

When she meets Jin-soo en route to dinner, she’s feeling tentatively hopeful, bolstered by the designer clothing. But Jin-soo furrows his brow, gives her the up-and-down once-over, and says with dissatisfaction, “But it looked good on the mannequin.” Lol.

(Okay, I know that it’s a stretch to comment on Ham Eun-jung’s appearance as unattractive because the actress is quite pretty, but I do enjoy Jin-soo’s constant dismayed reactions so it’s worth the suspension of disbelief for me. Also, he’s not saying that she’s ugly, just that she doesn’t portray the super-high standards of poise and grace he holds. She’s no Eun-young, at least, who projects class from the inside out. Seung-yeon is just wearing the outer layer.)

His reaction sours her mood, particularly as he sighs heavily and says, “They’ll think I’ve really lowered my standards.”

With that, Jin-soo slides the ring on her finger. And Seung-yeon is shocked when she finally hears who they’re meeting.

Eun-young and Ji-won arrive at the restaurant first and await the other couple. It’s clear that she’s not necessarily looking forward to this dinner — her mood is subdued — and when Ji-won spots the other two arriving, Eun-young tenses. She braces herself before allowing herself to look up.

It takes Ji-won and Eun-young a moment to place who this is, as they don’t immediately recognize Seung-yeon. And then realization dawns, and they look on in amazement as Jin-soo pulls out the chair for his date and acts the part of the attentive boyfriend. They’re practically slack-jawed in surprise.

The fake couple are in full-on faking mode, and Jin-soo launches into his story that they met in a bar (at least that’s not a lie) while she was on a business trip (also not a lie, although in his story they were overseas). Seung-yeon is less natural as she recites her end of the story, trying to pass it off smoothly, and Eun-young’s gaze lingers on the sight of the ring sparkling on Seung-yeon’s finger.

When the men get a moment alone at the table, Ji-won eagerly pumps Jin-soo for information, giddy at the vicarious thrill of hearing that his buddy got to live out his favorite fantasy: the boss and the secretary. At least we know which porn he’s watching. Not that I really wanted to know. (This is actually not a surprise when we recall that his relationship with Eun-young first fell apart because he’d felt belittled by her success and independence. Ji-won’s the type of guy who thrives off of being the older, wiser, senior half of the relationship.)

After the meal, Jin-soo asks Eun-young if her mind is at east, not that she has seen his girlfriend in person. She answers, “To be honest, I don’t feel great about it.”

Jin-soo makes his reply (“Why?”) casually, but he looks carefully at Eun-young for her response, anticipating her explanation. However, it isn’t the one he was hoping for: Eun-young says she was hoping he would move on and start his life fresh, but Seung-yeon is a person from his past.

One thing I appreciate about Seung-yeon in this episode is that she starts to put the pieces together. She’s still not the sharpest person around, but the facts don’t quite add up and she wonders at the underlying story.

For instance, earlier she had been so worried about messing up her act that she hadn’t had a chance to think about why she’s doing it. But in a moment at the restaurant, the thought strikes her that since this dinner is with old friends, why is there a need to produce a fake girlfriend for Jin-soo in the first place?

And now, as she looks at the expensive clothing Jin-soo bought her and takes off the ring, she notes that it’s quite an expensive ring. It’s not one he would have bought just for their act, which begs the question, Who did he buy it for?

Eun-young overhears the baristas chatting about Seung-yeon’s visit to the cafe earlier, and is puzzled when they say that she hadn’t known Jin-soo’s phone number or that he had moved in to the studio. The pieces start to fall into place for Eun-young when the barista adds that Seung-yeon seemed to be interested in persuading Jin-soo to guest on the radio show.

All of a sudden, Jin-soo’s behavior, seen in this new light, starts to make sense. She heads to the studio, finds it empty, and calls his cell phone. Jin-soo answers from the radio station, where he is being prepped for his segment. Jin-soo has a few minutes before airtime, so he excuses himself and continues the call from the hallway.

At first, he takes a casual tone, saying that he didn’t want to agree to the interview, but he couldn’t say no to his girlfriend’s wheedling. But Eun-young is tired of his facade and tells him plainly that she knows Seung-yeon isn’t his girlfriend:

Eun-young: “Why are you lying? The reason I could be okay without seeing you was thinking that later when we met again, even if it was in old age, we wouldn’t have the same relationship full of lies as before. I thought we’d be honest with each other, and that was enough. I lived with that as my comfort. But why are you lying again, as soon as you come back? I have to know why you have to do that. You left like you’d be gone forever but returned in two years — why the lies? Everyone else has changed, but haven’t you changed at all?”
Jin-soo: “I’m not exactly the same.”
Eun-young: “It seems like you haven’t changed. You just keep lying.”

Jin-soo: “In the past I lied for myself, but now it’s for you. That isn’t the same as not changing at all, is it? What I was doing all this time was realizing that there’s nobody in this world who can adjust to match me, and realizing that therefore settling down anywhere is meaningless, and thinking that now I’d have to adjust to match someone else. That’s why I came to find you, because I wanted to do what you wanted. But I arrived, and the thought occurred that what you wanted might not be what I was thinking, and I had to lie. You want to know what my shocking news is? If you really want to know, I’ll tell you. But I couldn’t tell you readily because I didn’t want to complicate your life, and I also couldn’t refuse to tell you. Because I didn’t know how you really felt. I want to do what you want. So you decide. Will you keep hearing lies, or will you hear the truth? Choose. One, I tell you the truth. Two, I keep lying.”

Throughout Jin-soo’s monologue, Eun-young has been silent, lost in thought. He sees the time and has to go in for the interview, and hangs up.

For long moments after the call ends, Eun-young once again sits there with her phone still held to ear. Finally, she turns on the radio, listening to the introduction of Jin-soo’s program, and contemplates her choices.

She ponders her cell phone in her hand, trying to decide how to respond as Jin-soo and the DJ make preliminary chitchat on the program.

Just as the DJ asks if Jin-soo had a particular reason for returning to Korea, she texts him a message and his phone lights up with Eun-young’s response. He freezes, ignoring the DJ’s question or perhaps not hearing it at all, causing some uncomfortable dead air. The interviewer tries to fill in the silence, while slowly, Jin-soo’s hand creeps forward to check the message.

It reads: “Number 2.”

Which means, of course, keep lying.

COMMENTS

Interesting development for our main characters, and an explanation that makes sense to me. Maybe it won’t resonate with everyone, but I’m appreciating the way this drama is managing its angst. Angst generally has an external component (e.g., some force keeping the lovers apart) and an internal component (e.g., the lovers feel that they can’t be together because of internal conflicts). When a drama relies on too much of one or the other, the angst gets frustrating. This scenario gives a balance of both, which feels credible to me.

So, what has changed in two years?

First off, I like that everyone else thinks Jin-soo has changed so much based on outer appearances, but Eun-young sees through that and says he hasn’t changed — or not in the ways that count. But as he clarifies, there is one main difference, and that is his willingness to work past his eccentricities. Or, to frame it a different way, he has decided that Eun-young is worth the effort to change things that he had previously believed to be unchangeable.

I wonder if Seung-yeon’s role in this is again going to be as the conduit. I won’t say Eun-young and Jin-soo have regressed all the way to square one, but they’ve moved back a few steps to being locked into that dynamic of hiding their real feelings as a protective measure. Jin-soo admits that this time he was doing it for her good — he didn’t want to derail her happiness with his admission — but whatever the reason, he’s putting up barriers again. And since he’s shown some of his weaknesses to Seung-yeon that he hasn’t shown Eun-young, he’s given her a glimpse at his true motives. Seung-yeon is on her way to unraveling those, and perhaps she’ll need to step in once again.

Early in the episode, Eun-young explains a little uncomfortably that “this is what kind of marriage” she is going to have with Ji-won. It’s almost like she wants to offer Jin-soo a bit of consolation, that even though she moved on, it’s not because Ji-won replaced him in her affections, or anything like that. She’s not making excuses for her choice, but it’s like she wants Jin-soo to understand the kind of relationship she has with Ji-won.

When a person is young, romantic passion can sometimes feel like it’s everything, but as a successful professional and mature adult, Eun-young has realized that a lot more goes into a functional relationship. I can see her accepting Ji-won out of a practical sense of compromise — she may not love him the way she loves Jin-soo, but he has demonstrated his devotion to her, and that kind of loyalty has to count for something. It doesn’t excuse his cheating earlier, but he finally owned up to that in a way that he hadn’t previously. Sometimes marriage is about decisions as much as it is about feelings.

In choosing Ji-won, I see it as choosing to move on. She could go back to Jin-soo and hope for a better outcome this time, but rather than taking a step backward, she is prioritizing her future, which I can respect. I really don’t think the choice is about either man, but about her own goals in life.

I think both Jin-soo and Eun-young assumed that the reason for their failed relationship was that Jin-soo wasn’t ready for it. So if they failed, it would be because he would never be ready for it. I don’t think they anticipated that it would fail while both were ready for that emotional commitment, just because the timing was wrong. This makes me think back to that earlier interview with PD Pyo, and what he identified as his major themes in his own life. (I prefer to base my interpretations of a drama on the material itself and not outside interviews — because what matters ultimately is what the drama DOES, not what it INTENDED to do — but I think it’s relevant here.)

Pyo described wanting to emphasize being happy in the moment, without overthinking yourself into a corner and fixating on what will make you happy in the future. If you’re always planning for the future, you’ll never enjoy today, and in so doing you may even miss out on future happiness. Eun-young and Jin-soo’s relationship seems to underscore that point — two years ago they decided to let today go, and banked on tomorrow, and that has knocked their timing askew.

Thanks JB!
I 'read it tonight and will more comment tomorrow. ( or not?)

.... But I found that I have many similar perception as yours after watching this (and the previous) ep, which I love it so much even thought EunSoo are both suffering. Frankly speaking, the drama is happening as I expected which is not the same with predictable... The writer has done a great job to get we/ the audience all deeply and intensively emotional involved and concerned the what is going to happen NEXT or more at the END (whether it's positive or negative as they know that they are taking a risk). However like my last post, I was expecting for more angst and the complexly conflicted exchange and individual growth after before hitting off the happy ending - for a relief. Even though I could see ,how JS is heart-broken and miserable in the whole situation. But dang! you deserves every little of it as you was the one caused this whole mess. It may cruel as it sounds I was expecting and waiting for his payback time. Here I got it. Well done!!! This is drama has such an awesome lama sense. lolz (like EY before and now is JS turns). I do understand how people got all frustrated over her answer as they’d want to get over the angst and see EunSoo happy again. Yet, I thought she'd do so too, since she's the strong, mature and rational SEY, which has always firm and clear as sticking to her promises and decision. We got to realize that If she really chose #1, it'd certainly be out of her character despite how much we dislike the result of it as JS and EY'll continue hide their feeling to other and even themselves.....
On another side I had so much to say about JS character but I 'am too sleep right now to get to take his layers off one by one (lolz, sounds funny?!?! ^^ )

******THIS MAY CONTAIN SPOLERS!!!! ******************
Yes I saw the preview as I relieved that doesn't seem as dramatic and tense as I thought it'd be. Thus, I don’t get why some are so in heaven as they are too sure and over-positive for because of it- which I have been waiting for it after reading about the interview...

On the other hand, wasn’t the **** from SY, much anticipated long time ago- right after Ep 8, in the middle of the 3 weeks torment with WC. Surprisingly I am not scared, nervous or anything, but even a bit excited and looking forward to it to see how well SY’s pull if off as so many people insist that she has more chemistry with JS , compared to the other rich girl, EY... Therefore I am excited and curious to see the much –await-scenes, as JS's reaction to it just like his conclusive decision , or maybe SY's consequence for her crazy feeling behavior - as she calls it so- from JS the day after ( I doubt it!!!) . However, what I’m looking forward the most are the audience ( and shippers from both side) reactions to it and their fascinating yet hilarious thoughts/ comments

(Will we see some man instinct from JS soon again ? Maybe a gentle but passionate, or overwhelming and intensive response from him this time? Yeah, right! I’ll make sure to record it, and show to EY, so she could think straight and realize JS has hidden felling for SY all these time. So finally EY helps SY-JS get together as she also so found her new man- DW !!!. THE END- ha-ha!!! just like how some fan‘s interested hypothesis for the drama ending. And I enjoy it!!! )

Thank you very much for your recap, JB.

I totally agree with EY choice: #2. For me, it is very practical choose.

I cannot imagine that a man who leaved her two years ago without any promise for his coming back. Suddenly he appears again and acts like she is always waiting for him all the time. It is very funny.

In practice, she should move on, because this is her life. But why she chooses JW again, probably it happens only in the drama, not in practice. I do not believe that she cannot find any one better than JS... Perhaps she is tired with her work, she has not time to meet and find another good man,...., as discussion of Kayt in ep. 13. And I am disagreement with her choose, because if she continues with this marriage, it leads to hell and pitiful life. Sooner or later she will divorce him....That is what JS spent with his wife.

I hope that she could rescue herself first in this marriage. Then she will find another good man in her future....

But this is a drama...And the director tried to attach JW with her so that the audience can disagree with this, then probably she & JS can find happy together.

In some points, I do not like JS, athough I like a lot of chemistry between them. He keep lying, and it is hurt EY a lot after meeting him again. he always put his mask, and how can he live with his life in such condition....

About the new building coffee house, EY named it '' Page one''. I guess that it will be played certain role in the future. Moreover, only from ep. 13, finally we can see EY's house. Perhaps it will have a bed scene between her and JS,.... Or maybe JW tries to test her by coming to her house suddenly after he drinks and.....haha

* A completely shallow comment*
I LOVE what all Eun Young wears in this episode.

I have watched this drama up to ep 6, and keep reading your recaps afterward. I will resume watching after this ends, so I don't really have comment about the relationship progress.
I admire Eun Young's personality ( and Park Shi Yeon does a great job portraying her ), and somehow it's not shocking she chose #2. She's practical like that.

TBH, I really want EY and JS end up together, but if not, I will just call it as life..we can't always get what we want..

There is a point where you just have to admit you missed your moment, its not fated kind of thing the Korean so love. One feels that is the case between these two, I mean how many chances are they going to miss?
I have to agree though if there going to be a happy couple ending it has to be with EY rather than the little secretary. I mean they like each other ..he thinks she kind of cute but little sister cute while she finds him impressive and wants to impress in turn but I think the crush she had two years ago has gone. Perhaps that why Dong-wook has come back? She was too immature two year back but now perhaps she ready to see him as a man. Thus getting the two couple happy ending? Of course that still leaves Ji-won out in the cold..perhaps Karma but he kind of grows on you over time.
To say the writer doesn't really deserve either girl is true, but he is the main lead so he gets the breaks..lol

Thank you so very much for the recap, Javabeans!!! I also like the last paragraph the most. It definitely speaks to the dilemma that EY and JS are experiencing.

Although I think that EY & JS have a happy ending. But I am not for sure 100%. Everything can be happen under the crazy writer, I think...haha

If yes, when they tried to turn to the couple JS & SY, let them be!

I hope that EY will be happy with the man who is true mad in love with her, and can be satisfied everything for her, than a man who always keep lying and easily forgets her to find the new love! Then please give EY a deserved happy life than the others in this drama! I cry also if she hurts!

Am I the only who's not giving any of the characters some slack? I feel like no one has the balls to do anything that's beneficial to themselves except for maybe SY, though surely for the wrong motives.

What happen to being straightforward and honest with one selves? We're back to square one yet again because two supposed adults can't own up to their own feelings.

Argh, frustration.

For me , JS should work harder to get what he wants for more than 10 years ,
EY has everything but love , she should stay single if she can not marry the one she loves , if JS is her true love , get him .
It is so bored if you marry to someone for security but not love , EY is successful
business woman , she doesn't need security she needs love and JS is talented
writer , nice guy too . They should end up together .

If I am asked which eps is my fav eps of CH, as far as I can tell all CH eps are my fav eps, I like ALL CH eps.

LOL when EY start to call JS writer Lee (Kind remind my self, I did that too when I want keep a person a distant away, yeap call him/her with the formal way) after all their history, no wonder EY pick no.2. Either way there will be no drama, ha, ha, ha just love the way the writer makes EY pick no.2.

I think when EY pick the no.2 choice it means she tests how much JS has already recovered from his mental illness. If he is healthy enough, he probably still keep tell EY about his true reason why he come back to Korea no matter what EY choice. And that means he stops lying with no force from another person ( I think SY will do the force a.k.a the catalyst i mean ) and has changed.

The Sign of The jerk JS still has not changed yet when he plays "you pick the choice EY". Argh I can imagine my self how frustrated EY is. I don't think it shows how unselfish JS but just how scared JS with the responsibility. A Couple discuss problems, pick the choice together, and share the responsibility.
But the more jerk JS the more I like him, ha, ha, ha enough with act like prince charming lead male actor....^-^

i hate how they make sy actually agree to that plan. it's so demeaning and they just keep sticking the knife in for us sy fans (sigh) =[. if you ask me, it was pretty obvious from the beginning when they introduced jinsoo as sy"sprince charming" that clearly they would NOT be together. before watching the drama i truely was excited to see kjh and psy as the two leads but after watching it i just don't buy it. i know what they're going for when they made her character successful but down to earth but....it's not really there for me. maybe it's not my problem with her, but that jin soo is different with both women, he is SO funny, wacky, and cute with SY but so, (to me), mature-which isn't bad and works/has worked for drama couples but in this case their conversations and scenes together are almost boring at times- with EY.

hey, love dramabeans-wouldn't be the same without it. Anyhow, I lvoed the ep like many-and I agree the way they have managed the storyline and the characters is great, and I cannot say that I'm dissapointed at all thus far. It's amazing, even with all the outward changes, and the time skip forward(which I usually hate, because it can go horribly wrong) it was just right. What I love most is that they show matured cahracters, but still the core of the characters greatly resembles what they were initially. I totally respect the humour they threw in too. Ah, I cannot wait to see how things wil turn out, whatever the outcome, I jsut hope it doesn;t fail to impress. Afterall the best for last.

@62 lovedovey

I agree in the sense I've never been able to imagine JS and EY actually have fun without any inhibitions. I think it's because they're so similar that they sort of give off a depressing vibe - could also be the angst music cue.

Anywho, I've never actually been this disappointed in the characters of EY, SY and JS. EY started off strong, her mannerisms and quirks bringing an entire new dimension to her personality. Over the episodes though I feel like they've weakened her character. She sort of gives up..and I guess I can understand that it might have been JS' rejection that caused it. But overall..she hasn't had a particularly traumatic past...so the reason behind her negativity is unclear.
And I miss miss miss JS's crazy laughs!!! Omgg just bring that back already. He too seems to have weakened over the two year gap. Strong personalities don't wane off in two years...it's ridiculous. As for SY...sighh sighh..she was never developed to her complete potential..so I can't blame her too much but still...anyway she is the only person is somewhat similar to her old self.
Without any spoilers..ep 15 was a hoot..but of course try not to pay too much attention to logic =P...

@43 I totally agree. EY and JS should just run away together. They need to turn off their brains and just elope. =D

I am very impressed that this drama still manages to keep my attention. Usually by the 12th episode of a drama I get bored and just finish the drama for the sake of finishing it. But Coffee House manages to keep throwing in twists and meaningful dialogue (which keeps me from skipping through parts) that interest me. I need to go watch ep 15 as soon as I get home.

Thank you for the recap (as always)

thank you so much JB!! What usually happens in a drama for is that I end up really liking someone and disliking another character (i.e. cattyness, desire to ruin the lives around them, consistent getting in the way of things) but in this drama I don't harbor any ill-feelings for anyone. Each character has their own faults but you can't help but understand their circumstances. I even love the corny Ji-Won, he's actually one of my fave characters.

I loved this episode! And the EY chose for JS..I would have picked it too! Dont get me wrong Im an EY/JS shipper but I think he just needs to clean up his mess properly! And lying hmmm although JS uses it to protect himself and EY but I think in the end it dug deeper trouble for the both of them. Denial is the best word to describe this episode as EY point-of-view!

Im kind of sad that this kdrama is ending. I followed it, I cried with it, laughed with it and got into trouble for it as well as I skipped work for this kdrama... but just like eveything else it has to end. sadness!

PSY should really get her injury "limping" be looked after. I mean her character is potrayed well but her movements are well covered by the PD but you can honestly see it that she has a hard time moving around. Good thing that shes wearing light clothes! When she wore he DM's shoes oh I felt bad for her because she was drgging that pair of boots! Im sure its hard for her back! But her performance in CF has got me saying she really did improve. Good for her!

Thanks javabeans!

Thanks JB for the recap, my day is complete :-)

She answered #2 coz there's still 4 episodes to fill in hahaha

I agree with #43 just elope haha go to Vegas :-)

I think JS need to step up on this one , JS should remember when EY initiated the KISS on his birthday, she took a chance, now it's his turn to take the chance and be honest. There are 2 things that could happen if JS tell EY how he feels, be accepted or rejected, at least he knows the concrete answer, but if he only just give up there's only 1 answer - rejected. It's not too late, EY is not married to JW yet, so there's still a chance. Just grab her and runaway....and please no mind reading, spill the beans!!!

i can understand why EY chose #2 and JW as well....its all about self preservation now...funny how their roles have been reversed now JS and EY....he's doing everything to protect EY...when two years ago EY did everything to protect JS even if it meant hurting herself...all i can hope for is a reasonably happy ending to the drama...

I expect that EY can have happy ending with JS.

I do not understand why the writer picked JW for her!! I am sure that this is not love marriage. The marriage without love cannot exist longly. It should be keep in mind that this is a man she faces everyday, talks everyday, and shares the same bed ! It will become hell if she and JW enter to this marriage. Of course some of people said that this is not bad choice. For me this is worse. After working hard, when she comes back home, she cannot share her though to JW, because they cannot find the common voice together...Poor EY and poor JW.

The good marriage should be based on love! Money, family condtion, and the others are not important. No money: they can make together, ..., but No love: how can they spend the whole life with the boring marriage?

Please pick EY out of JW life, and JW can be himself...Please give EY a good boyfriend.

I like KJH, but I hate JS !! He is only the weak man and cannot fight for love!!! He does not deserve the love of EY. So let him be and both JW and JS please go outside EY life!!! Both of them disturb her life.

I also feel hurt for EY. The one she love cannot fight for her love, the one she does not love will become her husband.... How miserable she is!

Although the director commented this drama is comedy. But indeed it torture the audiences a lot !! (hihi). If EY gets married with JW, I do not know what is the message through this drama: Please not fight with love, please satisfying with what we have! Please lies ourself because the life is not pink!!!

Should be we name the title of coffee house to coffee lies as someone in soomspi mentioned?

I think I’ve mentioned before that one of the things that I love most about CH is EUNSOO’s conversion which necessitates us to look beyond what is said. This episode gives me a lot of chance to enjoy what I like the most.

And here’s another thing that I love most about CH, thing that I never mention before – because despite my admiration for its writers and director I still can’t quite believe that CH is really that different – but as we’re getting closer to the end…...

The second thing that I love most in CH is Jin Soo and SY’s interactions. I admire CH ability to make their interactions the way it is. SY with her not too bright mind..… Jin Soo’s antics when he tortured and teased his far from smart secretary… How their relationship slowly grows from just a boss and secretary into an almost friendship all without being tainted by the usual love line – although there’s SY’s little crush for her boss but the dose is just about right…. It’s impressive.

I think KJW’s great acting contributes a lot to this difficult portrayal. The sizzling chemistry between Jin Soo and Eun Young is without a doubt very impressive. But creating a Jin Soo-SY relationship like that is also impressive. I guess that’s why sometimes Jin Soo seems to be extremely hard on SY. That part is mainly for our benefits.

Let’s see whether CH is really that different because it could be turned (it’s a drama after all wherein consistency could be discarded in mere second) into my worst fear: the secretary will get her difficult boss.

If that’s what will happen in the finale, I don’t think I could ever face my friend who told me that she knows the ending after just watching the first episode. If that’s what will see in the finale I’m going to be really cross, not just disappointed. I would consider that as an offense to our intelligence and a betrayal to CH faithful viewers. It’s like CH has been leading us on without any intention to deliver.

This is why I never mention how much I like Jin Soo and SY interactions, I’m afraid once I start talking about it I would be carried away, digressed and started to rant.

So let’s go back to how much I like this episode….

I only felt sorry for Jin Soo in the previous episode when he saw the wedding invitation and Eun Young in her wedding gown. But episode 14 has completely redeemed Jin Soo in my eyes. I forgive him all the wrong he’s committed towards Eun Young. And although I still feel like shaking him and yell these things: ‘Enough already! Be a man! Fight for the woman you love!’ But I’m back to loving him very very much.

This episode makes me feel beyond just feeling sorry for Jin Soo’s sorry state. My heart breaks every time he lied and conceded to Eun Young’s wishes. When he said his half joking questions in answer to Eun Young’s questions and then chose her choice as his choice…..I feel like crying a river and wailing why? Why?! Why only now did you show your love by granting her what she wants? And even now you still got it all wrong. You’re still not giving her what she really wants! For regardless of what she says what she wants the most is you! Not you letting her go!

Did I just rant again after saying how much I love Jin Soo and this particular episode? Ahh…I think this crazy drama has succeeded into driving me crazy…….

I still don’t have time to write Jin Soo’s story though. Actually I have no time to do anything else which has nothing to do with work till the end of the month, but CH has turned my priority upside down!

Looking forward to see a big ending and not a major disappointment..

Throughout this drama, JS has never said '' I love you'' to EY.

For me, this sentence is not important. The most important is how they express their love each other.

In my marriage, we do not like to say this sentence even though when we were a couple before we got married. My husband only said one time when we were fallen in love, but in that situation, I forced him to tell this sentence. Now both of us find that it is very funny. We do not need to say '' I love you'' , but we can have many ways to express our emotion.

I totally agree with JB's opinion:

''I think both Jin-soo and Eun-young assumed that the reason for their failed relationship was that Jin-soo wasn’t ready for it. So if they failed, it would be because he would never be ready for it. ''

I wish JS is ready for the relationship and can be brave enough to fight love for EY !

Thank you DB for another insightful review. I can't agree more with your analysis of each character in Episode 14. PSY's acting has improved so much! While she was amazing in LDV, she proves herself again in Coffee House! Hopefully JS and EY end up as a couple because the powerful chemistry between them has the unmistakable ingredient of love.

More importantly, Episode 15 is out! For those who either know Korean or can read Chinese subtitles, this is it :
http://www.dramastyle.com/drama/Coffee-House-2010/Episode-15/

The subbed version starts at 3.

***small spoiler***:

this episode is a lot more light hearted than the previous one. So for those of you who thought 14 was too angst-y, this episode won't be as emotionally torturous.

I am really getting addicted to this drama. This is the first time I write a comment so please go easy on me. My perception may be different.

Honestly, epi by epi, I have been longing more on JS /SY scenes. This pair just cracks me up. Jinsoo is just like a different person(better side) with her. At first, I never really bothered to think of the pairing as I am enjoying the ride. But after the time shift epi, I am more leaning towards JS/SY pair for happy ending.

The scenes with EY are becoming more and more gloomy, irritating and frustrating.

Also, when they parted, EY said, she will forget about Jinsoo completely and let him go and move on. But she never did. Instead, she moved backwards. She wasn't actually living her life. That scene in the airport and in office where she hoped for Jinsoo, it means she was clinging on him every second in the last 2 years. And her choice of marrying JW. I guess, EY's choice to pretend on moving on by marrying JW, was just her being professional who is true to her word since she did tell JW the condition of her considering him-no love attached whatsoever. But I believe, she should have not done that in the first place-giving JW some kind of hope even when she thought it was impossible for JW to achieve it. JW proved something to her. She ought to do her part of the bargain.

Regarding this episode, EY's choosing number 2 just tips me off. It seems contradicting to what she was saying to JS a minute ago. She may want him to choose on his own, but to resolve into something like that is not my way of doing it. But it may push JS to really move on. I hope he will. See a greener pasture of happiness. By the way their relationship is going, I am sensing a sign that they both ought to really move on from each other and see things differently. They are too stuck with each other considering their past and their awkward/can't-tell-you-head on-about my feelings, that it's hard for them to turn their heads. I think that's their greatest obstacle. If they get over that hurdle, they may have a chance of real happiness, whether with each other or someone else.

On the other side, SY may be foolish still but like Jinsoo had mentioned, it is her strength. She is growing, very slowly in career and in person but she's getting there. She is very devoted. Take for example, her reason for agreeing with Jinsoo's may be for naive/shallow reason-because of work and pay rise. But it also opens opportunity for her to explore more her connection to Jinsoo. When she was working before as secretary, she was too focused on being a pro that whatever crush may have felt for him, didn't blossom because she was too submerged on what she ought to prove and achieved. Now, that she will act as girlfriend/fiancee, she may have the chance to see the potential and this may be also an opportunity for Jinsoo to look at her in different way.

If SY would now fall for Jinsoo and Jinsoo remained unmoved, I would feel very sorry for Sy because she's innocent.

I also feel sorry and pity for EY. But no matter how much she loves JS, I don't think she will also be happy if she ends up with Jinsoo. Their past won't go away and will hunt them always. She is already hurt for soooo long -more than 10 years and counting. I think she will be happier if she really moves on from Jinsoo. She deserves better.

I watched epi 15 raw so I can't wait for the recap. Hope it comes tonight.

She chose 2 because her heart could not take it, not at this time after she had chosen or gave up to Ji won.

P.S Anyone know which handphone SY is using. It is real cute^^

I have no problem with EY moving on....but it's "moving on" with JW. Ey has been my favorite female k-drama character b/c of her confidence and self reliance. She has never come across to me as someone who just settles. By picking JW and they way she described it it sounds like she settled out of fear of being alone. That does not sound like our girl EY we have all fallen in love with. I would have preferred if they introduced a new character...anyone. Ey also comes across as embarrassed of JW, his personality, everything about him. This just seems out of character for her, which is why it rubs me so wrong. JW has been established as a less than deseriable choice for long. His character has never been redeemed. EY deserves so much more. If not JS anyone but JW

I've held off for so long but I just can't seem to do it any longer! First to set my perspective... I am neither a SY/JS or EY/JS shipper, although to be honest, I'm inclined slightly after this episode towards the secretary.

Despite all the goodwill and excellent review this drama has gotten here... I'm actually quite disappointed at its pace. Of course, the World cup didn't help but the angst (self inflicted I might add) between EY and JS seems to go on forever... and everytime there is progress in their relationship, the next episode regresses back a few steps. It is so infuriating.

Plus, I find it quite manipulative of the PD/ writers who must know of the 'two clans' scenario to write and try to please both camps... givng us some SY/JS moments here and some EY/JS moments there... just to keep everybody happy/ guessing.

Although I'm not shipping, I find that the build up of the story and characters so far seem to move towards a LOGICAL end pairing for me (which may or may not be logical for anyone else or the writers, of course!!). So dependent on this outcome, I will either rushing out to buy the DVD or putting the mess of CH behind me for good and putting my Kdrama hopes on 'I am legend!'

Plus, How arrogant is JS, who disappears for 2 years and then expect everything to have stood still awaiting his enlightenment and return??? DW is the same (for we haven't been given the back story yet) disappearing without a trace for years and then reappearing expecting everybody (especially SY) to be forever thankful and embrace him with open arms...

Sorry... ranting...

i'm watching ep 16 without subs and just observing the actions which is aplenty given SY slapstick antics.. quite tasteless to me actually..
Q: why does SY gets so much airtime unless she suppose to be the lead or is the lead / main still being played on? isn't her airtime even more the JS and EY?

if JS ends with SY, ...eerrr.. i feel a bit sick here... not just the age difference, the whole thing feels nauseous to me..
if JS ends with EY.. why the extra airtime with SY in ep 16?? karaoke, bedroom, bathroom "i see you" scene... i am not getting it..
if this drama is a JS/SY ending, i've wasted my time. can't even imagine a decent conversation btw them.. infact, have they even got a decent line btw them?
rather condescending? yes, i admit. yet i dont just dont see the alternative...

i really do not dig the 'blur' acting anymore.. it was cute in 'you're beautiful' but it's so overplayed here... why does the director prefers this?? to sell the drama among younger viewers?? does it? is that why so many singers cross over to drama with no acting talent whatsoever?? does the young gives good marketibility in korea?? do they have such strong purchasing power??

atleast the Sweet 16 bride movie and drama builds on the lady's character and growth despite the age and marriage.. SY is pretty, but there's a bus load of SY is kdrama land is there not?
or is it my time of the month.. getting so agi with ep 16 here??

As for me....I am enjoying reading every recap and reviews and also all the coments here. I may not agree with everybody (I have my own biases..hehe) and I also think that I am with the minority that loves and hopes that the couple that will be happy together is JS and SY.....There I said it......I like how their relationship is growing......as in slowly but still it is growing......they dont have emotional baggages......

Love what JB wrote about EY's decision on marrying JW. I completely agree, it's the practical thing to do. And it's not like she's forcing herself to do it, as shown in later episodes. And the last paragraph does put the drama intro perspective. Though I'm not sure if reality is this much of a roller coaster ride-- but as the saying goes, the truth is stranger than fiction sometimes. But yes, a relationship isn't always straight-forward and linear, it goes through loops and repeats, and gets jumbled up. On the other hand, the part of me that just wants to have a good laugh and be entertained though, wish it backed away from being too fussy with realism and with the whole 'break new grounds for Kdrama' and just tell a good story. Great pointing out if SY will once again become a conduit. It seems we won't be finding that out until the very last episode because without the tugging and pulling between JS-EY and JS-SY shippers, there won't be so much commotion over it, and it will lose a lot of fans if it gave way to either side now.

I love Coffee House so far. I'm rooting for EY/JS relationship in the end

As i expected CH episode 15 focused on the SY and JS relationship, it highlighted the 2 kisses that SY gave to JS. And SY did this when she's drunk though. Indeed, an awkward situation for EY.

Sorry for SY fans - but i dont really like her acting. She tends to overly reacts upon learning her :crazy thing" w/ JS.

As a whole, my enthusiasm having a possible EY/JS in the end...suddenly dimmed... after watching episode 15...and i guess it will continue even after Ep 16.

With that...i'll just consider episode 15 and 16 - a bad dream (lol!) A Forgettable pages in Coffe House.

Instead, am looking forward to CH final episodes next week... that would somehow geared towards a happy ending for EY/JS ...and SY ...having a future with Dong-Wook and wishing JW to just let go of EY...

Coffee House page 15 isnt extraordinary. There are some laughing bits but there isnt a high nor low point.

The funniest part for me was when the senior dragged JS to EY's house to look for the misplaced wedding ring. JS relunctantly got dragged into the house. The senior had to leave for a meeting and asked JS to stay put to hunt for the ring. Js's expression as he said no was hilarious! And when the senior askd him if he was cold blooded and JS replied with a straight face "yes"...funny! EY returned home with her in laws and when she realised JS was in the bathroom, she made some excuse and went inside. As EY asked why JS was there, he explained he was there to search for the missing ring. As JS was ready to make "his escape", EY apologised to him.

Basically this episode started with JS continued to lie about his purpose for being back to Seoul as per requested by EY. Both of them continued as if nothing happened.
And towards the end, it set the premise and tone that the senior found out the real reason as to why JS was back in town. When the senior and EY was in a jewellery store, the staff let slip that JS was here recently to buy a proposal ring. The senior initially mistook it to be the one for the secretary. However, he realised something was amissed when the sales girl mentioned that JS had said it was for a friend, a friend for many years... suddenly it hit upon the senior that the ring was meant to be for EY!!!

Coffee House page 15 . This is a relatively good episode for me as compared to page 14.

Highlights:

- JS informed SY that she must bring along her ID, and a contract to give up all rights to the body!

- By accident JS saw SY naked in the bathroom. Both screamed in agony and embarrassement!

- JS has explained SY that she had misunderstand the contract agreement he wanted her to sign. He had no intention of wanting her body and do anything to it, rather he wants her to give up all rights towards any contact with HIS body! He had wanted "insurance" from her that the previous episode will not happen again!

- Realising her mistaken assumption, she grudgingly agree to sign the "contract".

- JS then told her that he liked one of her novel concept in her novel and offered to buy the idea from her. However SY rejected it for several times as she said it was her first idea and she wont part with it. JS left her with to it.

- JW confirming his worst fears that writer JS had truly returned to Seoul to propose to EY.

- JW asked if JS can leave korea, and that he doesnt need to stay for the wedding even though JW had invited him prior knowing the truth. JS obliged and said that he will leave the next day.

- EY persuaded JS not to just leave, and that she doesnt want any other compensation. She just want him to fulfil his promise to do the programme and he cannot just run away again like 2 years ago.

- EY told JS that she wanted to protect and cherish this sense of high regards she holds for him all these years and that he should fulfil the promise and the trust placed in him. JS was visibly emotionally affected and touched by what he heard but he still hung up without a word.

- On the day of programme, everyone was fretting about the disappearance of JS.

- EY called SY and apologised saying that its all because of what she had told JS, to not complicate things and leave.

- SY however did not give up hope and insisted that she hold a gut feel that JS will appear for the radio show. Does JS really appeared on the show? (its for u to find out)

- JW received a call from JS. JW laughed and said JS didnt have to disappear without a trace.

- JS replied he was in Seoul. JW's face changed. JS said to him that he is sorry but he cannot leave Seoul now as he has things he wants to protect. JW queried what was it. JS replied that there are several things, he will protect them one thing at a time.

After watching page 16 ...am now totally clueless as how will this drama ends. But again am still hopeful that CH will end gearing towards EY/JS relationship.

@ Marie

The episode 14 recap is for discussion of episode 14 (and prior episodes as it relates to this episode) only. I haven't seen episode 16 yet, and I was halfway through your comment # 95, and I was really confused, before I realized that it was actually about 16. :( Sadness.

You may have missed the brouhaha from a few recaps back, but many readers and posters (including me and sometimes Javabeans herself) watch episodes on a time-lag. Therefore, discussion of the actual events of a later episode might ruin the episode for people who watch a bit later, and prefer to watch blind. In the context of this episode 14 recap, comments about episodes 15 and 16 amount to spoilery, and the Javabeans-blessed consensus is that we all should refrain from any spoilery out of respect for each other. I don't you know if were aware of our unofficial spoiler policy, so I just wanted to let you know. No real harm done -- it's just a drama after all -- but just so we all know for next time, yeh? :-)

@ anyone, everyone, whomever

If you would like to talk about episodes 15 or 16 ahead of their recaps, you may take it to the current Open Thread: http://www.dramabeans.com/2010/07/open-thread-144/
Just be sure to state at the start that you're talking about an episode that hasn't been recapped yet so any OT denizens who don't wish to read it can avert their eyes.

@83 Kayt

I agree with you. The director and writer drive us crazily. I do not know what to say about ending.

Luckily it seems about 2 eps. I hope that the drama will end soon, because it is little hard for me to concentrate working... When I think about how EY will get married with JW, how poor she is. Being also the thought that JS will love SY,... Oh, no, this film will not the comic drama anymore for me.

Now I am afraid of previewing the old eps. with the scenes between JS & EY. Looking their sweet scenes, I feel sad with keeping the thought that they cannot have chance to end up together. If it is the case, I will not see this film anymore after it finishes. But if it is happy ending, I will buy the CDs as soon as it have in the market and consider as one of the best drama I have ever seen.

Finally today I feel like commenting on this ep, strange isn't it?
This ep was kind of let me down so here I am.

First, I would like to say ,imo, a woman should never ever compromise the marriage. Specially, a strong independent career woman as EY. Either you are in for 100% because the marriage will bring you joy and happiness or you don't do it at all. If you have to get old with no one, c'mon this is 2010, you can be happy on your own. It's just a state of mind.

I see EY getting married as the way to forget JS, she thought he would not be coming back forever. It's kind of lonely I guess. Accepting JW is acceptable he's always there and something must tuning in between them, they was a couple years ago.

What I don't like in this ep is the ring, the RING issue. To me, the plot where JS held the ring in his pocket ready to propose, was totally surprising. It's like this dude is finally come to his senses and move forward, it was happy moment for me. And then this moment was totally destroyed by JS put the ring in SY's finger.
It's like anticlimax for me, later on whether he ends up with whom, this moment will always there in the back of my mind where he put the ring on a women's finger for granted. And the Fake girlfriend thing was a cliche and totally unnecessary. I would prefer the writer to choose other ways to solve JS problem with EY than this one, which leaded me to think this is fan-service things. This writer can do better and other way would be more meaningful to JS's character development. This is childish. The multiple choices were ridiculous. I have a feeling these two (JS/EY) know each other so well, and JS should know EY still loves him. He would ruin her happiness if he were to go after her so he stopped. I don't think he's chicken or coward , the wedding invitation has been send out what could he do? only EY should decide and her answer was to lie which I think is appropriate on her side. EY too waiting for some signs of JS to show her something substantial than words so she preferred to stay on the safe side.

Bringing in SY as a fake girlfriend only complicated thing, only if the writer wants to develop JS's feeling for SY which again leaded me for the reason for all these plots of SY which..... I didn't like.

Phew! out of my chest.
Thanks for your recap.

I liked that in this episode, Eun-young and Ji-won were good together, I liked the couple they form. Obviously I wish Eun-young and Jin-soo happy together but I like the fact that the scenarists show us that she could be almost happy with Ji-won.
