Dramabeans at NY Comic Con

Here it is: the perfect opportunity to put to rest the Clark Kent/Superman theories about javabeans and girlfriday. Yup, you guessed it. A public appearance. For real. In person. There will even be plenty of comic book experts around for backup on the Superman mythos, and the rules of defying the space-time continuum.

We’ll be on a panel hosted by the lovely people over at DramaFever, about Asian entertainment and pop culture. We have a sneaking suspicion that they want us to talk about K-dramas. Just a hunch.

Here’s the official panel description from NY Comic Con:

DramaFever presents Asian Entertainment Trends in American Pop Culture

From TV dramas to pop music to Hollywood movies, Asian entertainment is growing in popularity with American audiences like never before. Enjoy a discussion about what’s hot coming out of Asia today with panelists Jeff Yang, “Asian Pop” columnist at the San Francisco Chronicle; Joyce Lan Kim, CEO of Soompi.com; Javabeans and Girlfriday of Dramabeans.com; Jackie Sia, Content Manager of DramaFever.com; and Samuel Jamier, chief curator of the Japan Society’s Japan Cuts Film Festival. David Hou of DramaFever.com will moderate a discussion about the current trends of Asian entertainment and artists in the United States today.

Friday, October 8

8:30 pm – 9:30 pm

Jacob K. Javits Center, Room 1E14

Ticket Info at NY Comic Con: here.

We were originally planning to send JavaBot 2.0 and FridayTron 3000, but they failed a round of basic Q&A, so whadduya gonna do? We have to show up in person. Time to buy new shoes!

See you in NYC!

Great news! Congratulations JB and GF.
Wish I lived in NYC, *sigh*

I want to go but...I'm broke. *Sigh* So many things are happening in NY this year and I can't go to any of them. Well, I hope jb and gf have fun as well as anyone else that gets to meet them. And I hope for a summary of the event as well.

Hey unnie remember how on the last OT we were talking about a convention....... how awesome is our combined mind power?!! Let us promise each other that we will always use it for good :)
Now concentrate on sending me an acceptance letter to med school :)

Any med school will do, I am not picky! How come I manged to make some of my words into links without even trying? *scratch head*

Unnie is there a chance of you being there?

0

Unfortunately, no. I want to, but I just don't have the money right now. It's a long walk from Memphis!

0

It's OK, Unni. It'll be almost like we were there. I'm sure there will be some kind of official media. And if there isn't, there are other means. Just because American noonas and ahjummas aren't batshet cray-cray like K-netizens doesn't mean we can't also get our stalk on, yo. Pictures, videos, fancams and fan accounts will arise and spread through the interwebs like wildfire; Beannie-unni and FridayNamji-unni shall be revealed to us. Mwahahaha. Hahaha.
Ha.

0

We'll have to whine and complain on the OT that day to make sure that we get our way. OR we could combine our psychic powers to activate the trans-dimensional forces and open a Star Gate from our living rooms to the official suite, and Ninja-like steal images through our trusty soul-snatching machines, and then buy huge billboards to show the world the pictures of our heroines! Or yeah, YouTube is usually pretty handy, and possibly a simpler alternative.

0

Let's stick with youtube, powering that damn stargate is such a hassle, my DHD is on the fritz. And not even for the love of Yummy, can I remember where I put the batteries to my soul-snatching machine to charge!

I really wasn't expecting either of you to be there but hope springs eternal. It would have been pure awesome to see you guys. Well, it might be a good thing in a way, since I don't think the universe could handle the sheer amount of concentrated crazy the three of us together would create! :)
Even still, I would have risked the fabric of the universe to see you guys. :)

0

Awww.... Me too! I guess we gotta be kind to the other denizens of this planet and not combine our craziness. Lahlita and I will stay at our respective homes and wish we were in NYC... and I guarantee this is the only time that I will ever wish I were in NYC... unless it happens again next year! :)

0

i was so excited for you guys when i heard the news. i'll make joyce take a pic with you guys <3

Sigh. Make it to Otakon next year and I'll be there with bells on and reservations at this obasan's favorite restaurant.....

Let the old obasan and con veteran try to 'splain this. New York Comic Con - is a convention of all things related to comics, anime, Asian art work, etc. Up to and including dramas, many of which are based on manga/manhwa, etc. There are other cons around the country, probably San Diego Comic-con is the biggest, Otakon is in Baltimore, Dragoncon is in Atlanta.

So, DB and GF, our esteemed leaders, have been invited to sit on a panel discussion with soompi.com and dramafever.com to discuss Asian entertainment's influence in America.

Now, many con-goers will be cosplaying - dressing in costume (and darned if I didn't want to dress momochan in a Rinka costume for Otakon but she was out of state the little punk, ....me, I prefer steampunk so I don't do cosplay per se)

Cons are a world of their own, where like-minded addicts spend a weekend in their own land among their own peeps. Truly a glorious thing to say, be among 100,000 Whovians or Trekkers at a con and be considered normal. In this case, it's comic, manga, anime, and all things comic related that goes - including manga related drama hence the Asian drama panel (shoot ISWAK alone should be it's own panel - Japan live, Japan anime, TW, SK - ready set discuss!).

So, here we have an incredible opportunity for DB denizens to actually see IN PERSON the DB team....and prove beyond a doubt their existence as corporeal beings. Hence the spazzing out by those who can go and cries of disbelief from those who can't.

::OTOH, had say, LBH been on that panel, or the famous Dr. Who panel from San Diego been there, I'd have forgotten that I need to be somewhere several states away at 7am the next day and that I dislike NYC, and I'd have been booking my train tickets now...even an obasan has her priorities, hon. ::

We want a recap of the event and pictures of our favorite celebrities ( Dramabeans and Girlfriday) :D

We have a Fanime event every May in San Jose. Please come here. You have a big Asian fanbase here. You would love it. People dress up as their favorite characters.

We started out reading manga, then progresses to dramas. This is the perfect place to recruit more addicts (fans :P)

Have a great time in New York City. As a former New Yorker, fall is beautiful time to be there. :D
