Runaway explodes onto the scene with a 20% premiere

I’d expected high numbers for Runaway Plan B, but even so I’m surprised: 20.7% is an excellent start — hitting that number midway through would be a hit, but to get it in Episode 1 is rare. It speaks to the star power of Rain and answers the question of whether he’d be able to overcome the undercurrent of anti-fan sentiment that seems to dog him lately.

(Of course, now the question is whether the drama will be able to maintain its strong kick-off. In any case, it is positioned nicely.)

In its finale week, competitor drama My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho had a solid showing with a 16.6%, which is a little bit of a drop from last week’s 19.2%. But last week was an unusual case, with it being Chuseok week and only having one scripted drama competing for viewership (MBC’s Playful Kiss).

Speaking of which, Playful Kiss dropped back down from its temporary blip up last week, settling at 4.5%.

Now, I’ve gotta actually SEE Runaway to see if the drama merits its high numbers. It looks like it’s got the potential to be a lot of fun.

Na-ahh! I hanjanman am predicting that Go Hyun Jung, the killer of namdongsaengs(Cho In Sung, Chun Jung Myung, Kim Nam Gil, hanjanman, etc), will give Bi's cleavage a run for his money. Shilla is too small for Mishil. She needs the whole of Dae Han Min Guk!

I know Daemul means big fish here but I like the meaning of Daemul in Sungkyunkwan Scandal better. Makes me giggle like a schoolgirl. Mishil is Daemul(hi hi hi).

I saw Rain walking badass w/ an open shirt showing his Greek body, however I was hoping for a Spartan body since I kept staring at his man boobs while his twins were giggling as Rain kept walking towards the camera.

She is the only thing that kept me watching this drama that started on the wrong foot and never seemed to get it right.

I am hoping she will continue to get more starring roles because she is excellent in this drama..the poor thing. Not her fault that the drama wasn't well written and the rest of the crew was not up to her acting.

I would love to see her in more comedies...she is really good at expressing emotions and thoughts over her face which is not an easy thing to do.

That's kind of insulting... Playful Kiss is my fav show right now (although Sungkyunkwan Scandal is right up there too for me)... I enjoy the whole cast although Jung So Min still carries a lot of the show but Seungjo's mother is really good too.

I really have no idea why more people aren't into PK... I tried to watch Gumiho and was disappointed right away. Every time I watch PK I find myself feeling everything Oh Hani feels... one minute i'm smiling like an idiot, the next i'm feeling disappointed just like her...

Rating is really unpredictable. We never know what genre of dramas most people would watch. Just a while ago a melodrama like Baker King got the highest ratings, and now a comedy action drama gets one. Was it because of the actors who stars in it or the story? Anyway, will you be recapping Runaway JB ? or you have to choose one between Runaway and Daemul after MGIAG ended? I love reading your recaps (and GF's) as much as watching the dramas (sometimes maybe even more). Thanks for your hard work.

OMG- you will love this drama if you love the comedy in MGIAG. Very over-the-top, a bit wicked and really fun drama to watch. Rain is brilliant in this...watching the first episode reminded me why I love watching this boy act...he is one of the reasons I started watching Korean Dramas. He is wicked in this and he conveys so many expressions on his face, I am not sure which one I like the most.

If you like slapstick comedy/screwball comedies, then this is the drama for you.

This drama and Dr. Champ both surprised me at how entertaining they could be. I am now addicted to both of them and highly recommend them if you love to laugh.

As if I need more dramas to watch at this moment. Oh well.

PS-they are nice enough for flash some abs our way and that always earns my interest and approval. But they are catering to the men too. Lost of legs and short shirts with low cleavage blouses to reward the men. This show is equal opportunity pleaser which is great because my son will not complain about us watching this instead of something else. (^u^)

I watched Dr. Champ ep 1 & 2 yesterday and I liked it.

I really liked Uhm Tae Woong in Delightful Girl Choon Hyang, and while watching ep 1 (subbed) someone made the comment that his character, Lee Do Wook, the short-tempered, crippled director of the facility, reminds them of Dr. House from the US drama. I have only seen one episode of House, but after watching first 2 episodes of this drama, his character is definitely on the eccentric side, very outspoken, upfront, and very successful in his field. I definitely think his clashes with the Village faculty/staff will be interesting and entertaining to watch.

The judo athlete, Park Ji Heon, seems very impulsive, and leaning toward the hot-headed side. He definitely has a caring/soft side which is shown when he is with his nephew and his interest with Kim Yeon Woo. His relationship with his sister-in-law is a mystery, and not sure how his brothers death is connected to his sister-in-law seeming like she wants to or is trying to distance herself from him.

And Dr. Kim seems to have drama everywhere ->getting fired and at the same time getting on the bad side of a prominent Doctor/Professor who was once her main promoter at the hospital and now he is making it difficult for her to find another job. And at the same time she is having family and personal issues -> paying her fathers debt(s) and then being dumped by her boyfriend. All in one episode is a bit much. Definitely the character with the most (at least it seems that way now) "if it can happen; it will happen".

@ 20% rating is a far cry from Rain's prediction of 30% & Lee JJ's aiming for 40% - both were betting each other for high ratings. Baker's were between 40-50% ratings, how does Runaway match with this. Viewers are more family orientated attracting either the very young, middle-age or older. It's the story script they are after than mere hot stars like Rain, Daniel or LJJ that many think they are crowd pullers. Many family dramas performed way above expectations like Three Brothers, Baker, Cinderalla Sister and many others who do not have A-listers stars but their scripts are more pro-family.
Runaway - action packed may not appeal to most families. Whichever way it goes, will it hit pass 30% or 40% which I thought it would since everyone is so optimistic??

Well, how do you know this drama can't get to 40-50% like King of Bakery? King of Bakery 1st ep is 15% of rating, so I would say Runaway's 20% rating for first is pretty damn good. For me after watching the 1st ep, I have to say it’s the funniest action-comedy drama I have seen in my entire life. Rain’s so great with his acting. He can change from a cool badass detective when fighting the Philippines gangs, and then change to a funny-noisy-cute womanizer. I only understand 30% of the movie (my Korean sucks), but I still laughed my ass off. If I watch this full ep with sub, I probably pass out cuz IT IS FREAKING FUNNY.. Mblaq and 4minute’s ost songs are HOT. Can’t wait to here the original version.
Can’t wait for the sub and the 2nd ep tomorrow

Honestly, "Plan B" cant compare to Chuno. I really feel it's cheesy, cheap Jame Bond movie. However, I kept watching because I know Lee da Hae and Oh Ji Ho would be in the first episode. 0

Required fields are marked *

I probably will watch it for its PD who has a great job with Chuno. I don't usually compare segeuk with non sageuk drama, not because it can't but there're just different things to look over. Well, when I watch Seaguk drama, I tend to more appreciate the cinematography, scene, wardrobe, and Korea cultural aspect (since we talk about kdrama here). For modern drama, I usually get hooked by its storyline and unique characters. Not that modern drama can not have good cinematography, scene, etc beside its storyline and characters or otherwise, but Sageuk drama has its advantages, has more chance to emphasize them. Hah, it just my thought. And though still my fave is not Sageuk.

Anyway, good drama is good drama, rating is rating, and everyone has her/his personal taste.

Okay, I really like action flicks and Rain, so starting out with that premise:

I liked the raw! I haven't seen it subbed, of course. I thought that Rain kind of returned to the silly Full House character, which is a nice change. James Bond takes itself a lot more seriously than what this series seemed to be doing, so I feel that people comparing it to James Bond really don't watch action flicks that much. Maybe more Austin Powers?

I like that Rain didn't do another A Love to Kill or Ninja Assassin character, which is what I thought he was heading for in this. Not that I didn't absolutely spaz over those characters, because I did, but I like seeing actors do more than one role... because it makes them seem like actors and not like this is what they might be like in real life (sorry for the rub there, JGS!).

The chick in this is awesome! The guys are a little sleezy, and I am including Rain in that. It'll be fun to watch him redeem himself in later episodes... and if he doesn't, well that'll be interesting, too.

Required fields are marked *

Totally agree with you. Wondering why people compare Rain's role to James Bond??? James Bond's movie has like hundred of millions dollar to make a badass movie that last 90 minutes, and they got like a year to make. I don't know how much it cause to make Runaway, but it's can't go higher than 20 millions dollar. Runaway is like 20 hours long, but they had only 3 months to film in advance. If some of say actions here are cheesy then what's about the actions in Jeon Woo Chi and My girlfriend is an agent? The actions and comedies in these two movies weren't as good, but they were super popular. For me, Runaway passes my expectations, and I think it will do great.

Some people shouldn't judge a drama just by watching trailers or few minutes of it.

Agree with u cncerning rain's charactere being like the Yong jae in full house , that's what I thought the second I saw him laughing during this first epi , but tell u the truth , eventhough I didn't love Kang Bokgu as a charactere in " a love to kill " , I think Rain excelled in portraying that charactere ( it doesn't mean I didn't like yong jae in full house , I still think he is the cutest guy I ever saw in Kdrama ) but Rain was beyond great in protraying Kang bokgu .
I watched " fugitive " RAW so without subs and I didn't understand a word so can't comment too much about the first episode , will keep watching , if not for the sake of the drama ( if it turns to be not that good ) it will be for the sake of my Rain Oppa since I'm one of his biggest fans .
Anyway , since I started watching kdrama some months ago , I always thought we can't judge from the 2 or even 3 first epi and that we need to wait untill we dig deeper in the show , so I will wait a little bit before judging this drama .
Concerning the rating , I'm happy it worked well for this 1st epi and I wish it continues this way or better till the end .
PS : I'm so sad for Playful kiss ratings : I'm big fan of the show and I think it deserves better ratings becoz it's really cute

I'm worried that 20% (which is the result of strong publicity) will lull the cast and crew into complacency, I hope I am proved wrong. I am with the camp that thinks people tuned in to the premiere just to see what the fuss is all about and will drift away if it disappoints.

Having said that, this rabid fan of Rain has waited 4 years to see Rain in a drama, I completed ALTK in 2007 I hope he does none of the silly stuff and sticks to acting which he does have a knack for. By silly stuff I mean over-acting and acting like the jackass that he is sometimes. Quite honestly, I dont care for the rest of the cast half as much as I do for Jung Ji hoon. You seem very angry. No one is discrediting the whole staff or other actors/actresses. Rain has been popular for a while now and it's been a while back since he last acted. I wouldn't be surprised if most people watch to see what's the fuzz about. Even though I know that Fugitive has a whole lot of awesome cast, someway I feel that the popularity and expectation originate partly from Rain's fame too. No need to be offended. If you say you are not offended then sure, there is no need to use so many "!" marks to emphasize your point. It's usually a sign of aggression and it's too bad if you don't mean it that way because people's perceptions differ from what you intend.

Peace,

Of course, we will give credit to the director and writer, no doubt about that. Since Chuno was really successful, I think they are really under pressure for making this one to be another successful drama. No movie or drama can be successful without the talent of director and writer.

The reason why people give Rain so much credit is because not only he is an actor, he really helped the production crew to get investments for this drama. He is the main rep for Nature Republic and SKTelecom, and these two companies are 2 of the biggest investors for this drama. From his popularity, he helps pulling viewers to the drama

Since the first ep. mainly focus on Rain and Na Yong's character, that's why I give a lot of credit to Rain and Na Young's amazing acting. Lee Jung Jin's character is kind of confused (don't know if he is a good or bad guy). He is hard-working police, but I think he really hate Ji Woo (Rain's character). I can't wait to see Henney tomorrow ep.

I haven't watched this drama yet (waited for the subs), but I read the preview on Hancinema which says "Fugitive plan B is a drama which is impossible to get a clear idea of. There is no answers to so many questions, but its spectacular size and attractions will make the viewers forget about those questions ". Maybe they try to focus more on the action and fun to entertain the viewers and not so much on the storyline. I'm waiting to see if JB and GF will recap this drama. Because both of them are very critical when it comes to storyline and the things that makes sense (I enjoyed the recaps and all the comments and discussion on Bad Guy). I so want to know how you look at this kind of drama guys. It'll be so much more fun watching it and also reading your recaps. As for Rain's star power? Eh, I'm not a fan so I don't now his material as much or how good he is, but I'm no anti too, but you have to know the guy to be an anti anyway. I guess I'm indifferent to the guy, which according to some people is just as bad as being an anti. X/

the way i see, -
clambering as the no. 1 world korean star then 20% rating is disasterous. Rain the powerful has to show impressive result - at least 60% , got to be more than other dramas with no A-listers eg My Too Perfect Sons, Cruel Temptation, Baker's Bread - all with pretty unknown & unimpressive actors & some not proven, yet ratings were beyond believe.
anyone can explain why? A stars no longer equate to successful work from recent examples proven. the right script with the best story counts more than the actor itself.
crazy to conclude Rain is the star power, yeah he's got the muscle power no doubt abt it.

It's just the Pilot Episode,Most Dramas starts for about 10-15%,But Fugitive kicks off with a 20,FYI : Kim Tak Goo rated about 16% on its Pilot.

Plus the fact that competition in 21:55 slot is much more intense than any time slots,I'm sure it will rise once MGIAG ends.

umm 60% is kinda ridic. Nothing has been rated that high in about 15 years. :/ come on now 20% is pretty good for a debut

I watch the first raw episode...for me this drama live up to it expectation..its quite chessy but it still acceptable as this drama balance it action scene and hilarious aspect really well.Rain was so sexy and funny as well especially his conversation with Lee Da Hee.He show a various range of expression from serious he could become funny and Lee Na young was so great. I'm looking forward for the next episode.Hope the rating increase for the next episode

I just watched the first episode. They are really playing on the sex appeal. Lots of abs, legs, and breasts. I'm actually baffled by the amount of cameo appearances from Chuno they stuffed into one episode. I wonder if Jang Hyuk will also appear. He was a crucial character in Chuno. Overall, the hilarious tone will keep me watching. This will probably balance out the intensity of Dae Mul.

Mmm... I'm not sure about this drama as of yet. I don't understand Korean language, so this is based upon watching the raw.

Plus point: action scenes are to the point, and lots of fanservice thanks to Rain's steeled body. Ah, and he moves really graceful in his action scenes (and elsewhere!), so I think that all his action training is really paying off.

Minus points: The first ep was too much... over the top? It's hard to describe. Also, I really hope that Rain's character will get a bit more serious time in the upcoming episodes, because right now, I have a problem taking the character serious. Don't get me wrong, it's not the fact that he ends himself up in all these situations, but even in the one crying scene there was, the character seemed to be faking, you know, like a kid that cries because it didn't get what it want. The character is missing the 3-D, if you know what I mean.

But it's good to see Rain back on the small screen. :)

really, what's with KBS?

as expected, Rain has dominated the wed-thurs ratings..now im just wondering (although i know it's impossible) what if playful kiss was shown in KBS, will it have the chance to earn higher ratings than what it has now? oh well i know im just talking nonsense..

Do you really think it's because it's on another broadcast station that PK is doing so badly? Surely there must be another (or many other) reason than that?

For example, how about this: What if PK had a better male lead and a better storyline? What if it didn't have to rely on the lead female character to carry the story? What if the storyline itself wasn't based on a high school scenario, which we're all too familiar with when everyone watched "BFF"? Sure the story is different, but it may have made a difference to have this storyline based on adults than high schoolers. Not too many ajummas can identify with them or quite frankly, care that much. If the production people dealt with these kinds of questions before it started, would these reasons have a chance to earn higher ratings than what it is now? Just asking...

On to "Runaway: Plan B" I surprised myself by liking it. Of course, I knew I would like LJJ but not being a big fan of Rain, I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm also not a big fan of Lee Na Young. But cheesy, as it's SUPPOSED TO BE (at least the scenes in which Rain was in), the drama was surprisingly engaging and the fast paced. And it was funny - not from Rain but surprisingly from LJJ. I'm not used to him in that kind of role but he was really impressive as an arrogant and yet brazen kind of character. I know I'm intrigued to see more of it. I hope it maintains the momentum of the first episode.

but for me this is only a "what if" since a big number of audiences are all anticipating the shows that will be aired in KBS2 (although im sure SBS and MBC are not far behind the competition)..

and as for my opinion on the male lead role..im not satisfied with Kim Hyun Joong when he didn't gave much justice to Rui character in BOF. But for PK, i can say that he had improved as compared to before although he still lacks emotions on some of the scenes and i wished he could've done more than what he did..but i think he fits the role bec he's a good description of Naoki in manga, a genius guy who has a pretty face..someone who is not too young as a highscooler and enough to portray and become a genius doctor in the latter part..so for me KHJ is fine :)

and the high school scenarios is just half part of the drama and maybe the writers/director are just following the original (manga) story..im just hoping that both lead actors can portray the mature roles in coming episodes even better..

anyhow, i sincerely respect your opinion..maybe im just like others who's contented to see KHJ's smile.. :)

side eyes you. I don't think his acting is bad(I've only seen him in FH though, I hated his character but it wasn't due to horrid acting) and his singing definitely isn't. I can understand if his voice and music style isn't your taste but you really think he can't sing? :/
