Runaway Plan B ratings continue their slide

I’m actually a little shocked: The latest episode of Runaway Plan B drew a mere 11.9% rating, which is nearly half its strong premiere number. More worrying than that, however, is the steadiness of the downward trend — Episodes 1 through 6 have garnered, in order, a 20.7%, 17.9%, 18.0%, 16.2%, 15.1%, and 11.9%.

Over on SBS, Daemul‘s Episode 3 drew a 26.5% on Wednesday, and kept it up the next day with a 26.1%. MBC’s Playful Kiss numbers this week were 6.0% and 5.6%.

I had expected Daemul to cut into Runaway‘s ratings somewhat, but hadn’t thought it would so completely dominate. Yes, dramas tend to be the purview of the ajumma viewer, and President Go Hyun-jung is a huge draw — but surely Runaway would collect that subset of the viewership that craves testosterone, action, and speed, I thought. I’ve wondered if it would have done better as a summer series, or even on weekends a la Man Called God, but in any case it hasn’t managed to command the same action-lovin’ eyeballs as Chuno, which is what everyone was banking on.

It’s too bad; despite not loving the drama, I have fun watching Runaway, which is a harmless escapist vehicle to counter the Pomp and Drama of Daemul and the romantic sweetness of Playful Kiss. (Also: Lee Jung-jin is damn hot. Sometimes I forget to pay attention to the main point of a scene when he’s all gruff and glowery onscreen. Although, let’s be honest — the hot stuff usually IS the primary purpose of scenes in this drama.)

Maybe next time, Rain.

Indeed it wasnt love at first sight like dr. Champ, but more like hanging around with the cool kids, a lot of fun but they aren't gonna be your best friends.
And Deamul is like the annoying kid who sucks up with the teachers, you don't want anything to do with them!

I'll be honest--the only reason I even CONSIDERED watching Runaway was because of Lee Jung-jin, but I pretty much ran away the second I heard that Daniel Henney was going to be in it. That man is gorgeous, but watching him attempt to act makes me physically sick.

That said, I did watch the first episode and Rain has definitely improved since his Full House days, but I just wasn't drawn in by the story. It's not a bad drama, but I guess it's just not my type.

I do hope that the ratings turn around. A rating of 11.9% for a drama as hyped as this one has got to hurt.

Bi has definitely improved. i loved his facial expressions and then contrast that with Lee Jungjin's gruff, serious look. it's just eye-candy all over.

ive nothing to complain about the drama. the acting are okay. the dialogues are fun. the actors are good to look at. but it's not just completely taking me in. i finished the 1st episode and i'm in no rush to watch the next.

Runaway is like the drama that i'm interested at but not willing to devote time yet. i might even wait until it's all aired and subbed (but eventually i might even lose interest.) ah, if Lee Jungjin has a nice ending, i'll be sure to watch it in an instant. heh.

Runaway is fun to watch. Although the ratings is not that great in Korean, it's doing extremely well online (just like Playful Kiss). Moreover, KBS sold the drama to many channels around Asia with extremely high price (Brake many records), so I definitely think it's a successful drama. Never watch Daemul before, but my friends (who are in their 30s) told me that Daemul is quite boring because the political views on this drama are pretty unrealistic, and Kwon Sang Woo’s character is confusing. I guess Go Hyun-jung is a huge draw of the ajumma viewer, and youngsters in their teens and 20s can't stay late at night from 10 to 11 to watch Playfull Kiss and Runaway :((

That's gotta hurt. I haven't even seen Chuno yet, to see what the director-writer tandem have in store for Runaway.

And yes, Lee Jung Jin IS hot. I just can't believe that I wasn't able to look at him properly all because of Kim Rae Won in Love story in Harvard. Good thing I saw 9 ends 2 outs with Soo Ae, where I have fallen for him completely (and their pair).

exactly my sentiments of lee jung jin...except the love story in harvard thing- i run away as fast as a roadrunner with that thing...i just love him after 9 ends 2 outs and soo ae...that's why i'm forcefully watching runaway just because of him...and is anticipating athena because of soo ae...love their pair...

about daemul and runaway...actually, i liked daemul more than runaway...even though daemul confused the hell out of me with some serious change in tone and some plot shenanigans (on the first episode, haven't watch ep 2), it managed to have an emotional connection with me primarily because of the awesomeness that is lady mishil...with runaway, it has left a bad taste in my mouth after watching the first episode...the jokes aren't funny, the acting is not really the best (except for ljj) though its slick, i do not feel anything at all after watching it...that's why its in the my back burner (its lucky that's in the back burner, because i would not even touch it again if not for lee jung in, again) after pk, skks ends...while i'll keep tuning with daemul hoping it would get better

I'm not surprised. Daemul is shaping up to be a decent drama, and episode 4 had some very nice moments.
I'm a little cynical about the director but he's been pretty decent between episodes 2-4 (the music and background score is nice and evocative, too) if he stays this way, I'll be more than happy. The pace seemed to be going sickeningly fast at first but has slowed down nice and steady, and knowing YDY is back in the writing seat, there is hope.

i love this drama. it's different from kdramas i have seen so far. it's funny (has me crackin up at times), action packed and suspenseful with international talent and i find the storyline entertaining. yep, Rain really shines in this drama, plus it's nice watching Korean females play cops and robbers and not afraid to fight like hell.

don't know what the likes/dislikes are for citizens in Korea, but this drama is being watched all across the Internet and it's a shame these numbers can't be included. can't wait for next week cause it gets better and better.

I'm not old and I like Dae Mul. I don't watch the drama for hotness but because I find it interesting and enjoyable so far. The audience gave Runaway a chance, hence the high ratings but perhaps they needed something more than hotness to keep their interest.

Word! I'm in my 20s, it's not about age but tastes. Hotness gets old, true talent is timeless. (And Cha In-pyo has both, hah!)
Just LOOK at Daemul's cast, even Lee Jae-young! He has to be one of the most underrated actors ever, is being utilised well here, I really like his character (dood playing KSW's boss).

0

Required fields are marked *

Agreed. I'm also not "old." Although I'm still warming up to Daemul, I couldn't get past the first few episodes of Runaway. I agree with Jane and supah that hotness doesn't make up for substance. I'm still a bit hesitant on where the plot is going with Daemul also, but it makes an emotional connection with me whereas Runaway doesn't. And in terms of talent and star power... I truly believe that Go Hyun Jung, Kwon Sang Woo, and Cha In Pyo soar above the Runaway cast... which may account for the ratings. Personally, they draw me in more. LJJ, Henney, and Rain may be "hotter," but it's not enough. And in Kwon Sang Woo's defense... Watch the movie, "More than Blue."

Required fields are marked *

True. I'm in my early 20's so I don't consider myself old, yet I enjoy watching Daemul. I find it intriguing. Its true that hotness is not the basis to attract viewers. Talent and star power are more important. And that's what Go Hyun Jung, Cha In Pyo and Kwon Sang Woo are all about... Daemul fighting!

Daemul a sure a hit as you can get. Korean lady President and story about the white house..a sure fire winner, though I wonder if its like that huge film last year about the Korean presidents, that was frankly boring to me. You had to be a Korean to really enjoy it as it was all about Korean blowing it own horn..not something very interesting if you do not happen to be a Korean, I well have to see. Runaway Plan B? sigh I did try to get through the first episode but did so mainly on fast forward. There just something not quite right about it that can not catch my attention..I mean I watched Man of God! and liked that more..and even I agree it wasn't that good!
I think this one will have to go on the 'I try and watch one day' list.

ouch.... i feel bad for Rain, especially when he was so confident getting into this... and despite me not loving this drama, i enjoyed it and after watching today's episode, I feel that it doesn't deserve the 11 rating... It's never a happy thing, even if the drama is atrocious, which runaway is not, to hear a decrease in ratings... especially when you think of all the hard work put in and all the disappointment felt at such "reward."
However, nothing can beat the misery that is PK in terms of dismal ratings so most of my sympathy goes to that drama...
As for lee jung jin... yes he is hot... but he's main appeal in the drama for me is his storyline with yoon jin seo.. i've loved her since RoI and can't wait to see how those two work out... frankly, sometimes, i feel like their interactions are more entertaining that between rain and lee na young.

I watched half of the first episode of Plan B. I hated Bi's acting in Full House but I adore Lee Na Young. She's so awesome in it. But I cannot stand Bi's cheeky acting. Or maybe I just don't like his character. There's something about his acting that makes me very annoyed and want to throw something at the screen. For me that is the reason why I probably won't be watching Plan B.
(Oh if only I could skip to the scenes without Bi in it)

I only watched episode 1 and to be honest it's far too cheesy and tries too hard to be cool. Whether all this is intentional or not doesn't really matter because there are too many scenes that makes me cringe, especially the action sequences. Really, why should I watch something like this over an American TV show except for the fact it has Korean actors in it?

One man's meat is another's poison.
Koreans not into James Bond action-like dramas with all those mad chasings and shootings.
They are couch potato to relax watching their home-grown family orientated stories.
From media reviews, Korean citizens doesnt like dramas with overseas scenes, Fugitive got too many shots of other countries. Korean dramas have to be 80% Korean ambience & culture.
Another rant from netizens is fake acting & facial expression of Bi and LNY.
Yet another rant is their unrealistc stunts.
LJJ and DH would be a good draw but not Bi due to image problem diving from personal to business scandals climbing too steep ladder to deep fall .
Bi fans over-confident to hype up his world no. 1 status thinking he has that oomph factor to rake up ratings above 30%??
This week rating is the steepest, will it slide below 10% next week , Bi fans hold tight to your horses rein!!! Never count chickens before they're hatched!!!

That doesn't explain Runaway's initial ratings and the downward slide.

Ultimately, it's the quality of the story/script and acting that keeps initial ratings high or increases low ratings (via word of mouth).

It seems that Runaway is more flash than substance.

After all, aside from action-oriented K-dramas like "Iris", American action shows like "24" were quite popular (heck, "Prison Break" was more popular in SK than in the US).

Loving this drama, I not happy with the female lead but the supporting actress is so funny she make up for everything that lacking in the lead actress character and acting abilities. Rain is Smokey Hot, his characters is funny, smart, serious, sexy, shy, childish and so much more. Rain acting has improved a lot to be this versatile. I really love the action scenes very realistic they spend some money on it for sure.

I wasn't planing on watching this drama but I'm on vacation and there wasn't nothing else that peak my interests so I decide to give it a try and I'm so glad I did. It right up there with Giant. I don't mean the same level but as far as keep my limited attention span.

The co-star (actor) is DAMM sexy, side note: There nothing more sexy then a man running at full speed, Oops yes there is. Two sexy men running at full speed. I lost 5 pounds just from watching.

well, i haven't seen daemul, so i can't comment on it, but if it mentions real social and political issues, the i can see how that would appeal to the public....

playful kiss doesn't have a smart storyline: hani stalks seung jo and is clingy, needy, and dependent even though he treats her meanly or indifferently, but she is cute and perseverent, so he falls in love with her. not the best storyline, but it has some aw moments when you can relate to having a crush or say been there done that in high school, etc. there is no typical female b... who makes life miserable or a strong male antagonist, haera is a girl who annoys hani a bit, but she's mostly just a goo friend of seungjo's and she has some feelings for him, but accepts that seungjo likes hani. rather than a villain, she's more like hani's opposite, and she can be cute and funny. bong joon gu has had a crush on hani forever, and he is sort of like a male hani, always following her around, but he is a good cook, and he too gets his heart broken. he's a nice guy, so yeah, it's sad to see him sad. i've seen all the episodes so far, and i think the ratings it gets are to be expected. it's a plain story with characters that don't evolve, and without many twists and turns, except a few kisses. iw ill say that i really think jung somin (hani) is a great actress, and the rest of the actors pull their own weight, but the writing isn't as good as it could be. parts feels rushed and all over the place sometimes, and oh hani has yet to develop as a character even though we are in the last week of the drama. frankly, the main reason i watch is because it's a harmless way to pass the time (and, yeah, there are plenty of aww moments). the other three are because i try to finish what i start, there was a lot of hype surrounding this remake, and kim hyung joon is there, so i was curious about his acting.
as for fugitive, i'm only as far as episode 4, but i think it's a fun show and i definetely like it. i get a few good laughs and i stay entertained throughout. actually, i don't usually like action, but the scenes are pretty cool, and the storyline gets more complex as you go along. sure, some bits are cheesy, but others are fun and fresh. the hero is really not a noble person, he may be smart and clever at getting out of sticky situations, but he does everything for money and he is a womanizer. as stated previously in the recap here on dramabeans, "he thinks he's James Bond, but he isn't", and that makes him likable. the cops are fun to watch, and the villains seem to be getting unveiled slowly. while the english, japanese, and chinese dialogue is sometimes random (other times it totally makes sense why), i can deal with it without much trouble. oh, and i'm usually skeptical about singers, particularly idols, turned actors (although i was surprised by choi siwon in oh my lady) but Rain is REALLY TALENTED! i'm surprised. i haven't seen any of his other works, although i know they have done well, but i always thought it was in part because of his idol status. nevertheless, he can do dumb, clueless, pervy, player, sweet, serious, brooding, cocky, you name it! his action scenes are great, and i tink he does an awesome job. all in all, i don't get why fugitive is declining in ratings.

Its true Daniel Hennesy is hot, but his acting bothers me. This drama is funny though, because of Bi Rain antics. The funniest part so far was when he had his butt in Jin Yi's face while driving, that was hillarious
