Sungkyunkwan Scandal: Episode 12

Hey, girlfriday here, pinch-hitter in the Joseon Crack lineup. Now that I’ve seen the episode, in retrospect it seems like I swooped in and picked up the best episode to recap, but I swear, I’m not greedy like that.

Oh, who’re we kidding. I AM greedy like that!

LESSON 12 RECAP

It’s fisticuffs everywhere, as Yoon-hee knocks Sun-joon down in the water, and Jae-shin clocks Yong-ha a good one, drawing some blood. Is it weird that I find that hot?

Yong-ha doesn’t think his offense is really that bad, but Jae-shin tears him a new one for messing with people, as if everything is a game. Nail on the head—that’s pretty much his M.O., but as his best friend you have a right to call him on it. Jae-shin, of course, is worried that “something” might happen, knowing that Yoon-hee is a girl.

I love how in dramas people always freak out about a man and a woman being locked in a place overnight, because “something” might happen. It’s the funniest euphemism to me, because they always make it sound like sex is a “thing” that happens to people, like catching a cold or something. It’s hilarious. Can’t two people just choose to have sexy fun times? It’s a rhetorical question to k-dramaland, not a gripe at Joseon Crack. Personally, I find Guh-ro’s concern overwhelmingly adorable.

And so does Yong-ha, who calls him out in turn, for showing his true concern for Yoon-hee. This was his goal, in fact, in orchestrating this crazy can’t-catch-a-boat scenario: to confirm his suspicions that 1) Yoon-hee is a girl, 2) Guh-ro knows that Yoon-hee is a girl, and 3) Guh-ro lurves her like a puppy.

On the Island of Pent-Up Feelings, it starts to rain, and Sun-joon catches a cold. They rush to put the tent back up, and end up inside together, feeling awkward. This would’ve had more impact if you weren’t already roommates, but it’s still delightfully tense.

Back on the peninsula, Hyo-eun cries that it’s all her fault, wanting to be trapped on the island in Sun-joon’s stead. Yong-ha is surprised at her earnest concern for the stiff and boring Sun-joon, wondering what on earth she sees in him. He sweetly puts a spoon in her hand, telling her to eat something warm to stop from shaking. Aw.

It eventually stops raining, but when Yoon-hee looks back at Sun-joon, he’s fallen asleep. She tries to shake him awake, but he falls onto her shoulder. She realizes that he’s running a fever, complete with purple lips and freezing hands. She warms his hands with hers and takes off her outer layer of clothing, to use as a blanket. What about his lips? Aren’t you going to warm those too?

She thinks to gather twigs and build a fire (smart girl), so she starts the night-long project, not realizing how difficult it is to make fire when everything just got drenched in rain water. But she keeps at it, starting the fire and watching over Sun-joon.

She warms his hands, and lies on top of him to keep him warm. Rawr!

Meanwhile, Jae-shin scours the town for boats, offering up his weight in nyang for someone to take him across to the island. But no one will go this late, and in this weather. It’s not fated to be, for you to rescue her from this, but I love that you try so hard.

Yong-ha catches up to him, asking how he could possibly be so worried about two strapping young men trapped together on an island. Or is the fact that they’re both men the part that worries him? Haha. No, but that’s certainly what Sun-joon’s got swirling around in his head. Yong-ha pats his cheek and leans into his ear, “I’m always on your side.”

I think it’s equal parts wanting him to win the girl, and wanting Guh-ro for yourself, and I love that about you.

Sun-joon wakes up to find Yoon-hee curled up next to him, face covered in dirt and hands covered with cuts. He sees the massive pile of firewood she gathered, and reaches out his hand to her face, just as she stirs awake.

Sun-joon: “I didn’t do anything.” HAhahaha. He yells at her for being so stubborn, showing his concern and gratitude in his ass-backwards way. She doesn’t even hear his nagging, as she feels his forehead and beams that his fever has broken.

Guh-ro returns to his empty dorm room, left with nothing to do but be alone with his feelings. Yeah, he deals with that as well as you’d think.

Yoon-hee and Sun-joon sit by the fire, and she puts up a brave front, saying that Hyo-eun seems like a good girl with a pretty face, and a pretty heart. She acknowledges the match, and Sun-joon stupidly agrees with her. Gah, I love this—she’s saying it to distance herself because it’s what she thinks he wants, and he’s doing it to distance himself because he thinks he can’t love her.

She asks what he likes about Hyo-eun, which he can’t answer, since he’s never thought about that stuff. She tells him it’s simple—someone who makes your heart race, makes you think of them, makes your day bright or cloudy. Sun-joon jumps to the conclusion that Yoon-hee must have someone like that in her life, to hear her talk that way. She asks if he intends to get engaged, and he tells her that it’s his father’s idea, and that he has no interest in the matter.

That makes her break into a smile, and she rewards him with an apple…with a cricket on top. She freaks out in a girlish scream, throwing the apple onto his lap and hiding her face, making Sun-joon smile from ear to ear. He teases her with it, and they have a good laugh.

Before the break of dawn, Yong-ha shows up to offer Hyo-eun a ride to the dock. He gallantly swoops her up onto his horse, and tells her to hold on tight (oh, you), as he takes her to her beloved.

Yoon-hee starts to doze off, and Sun-joon gives her a little apology, for bringing her here, because of his feelings…

Without understanding his actual meaning, she tells him that it’s okay, because it felt good to be able do something for him. She dozes off, and he watches her sleep, looking at those lips…

He starts to lean in… (Omo!)

…nose thisclose to her cheek…

And then he catches himself, his hand balling up into a fist, as he pulls away, realizing what he’s about to do.

Gah! The angst, the push and pull of his desire against what he thinks is right…it’s SO PERFECT. It’s great dramatically regardless of who the players are, but it’s another level up, when the makeup of his character is so rooted in Right vs. Wrong.

He heads to the shore to beat his heart into submission, which is when Hyo-eun comes running to him. She locks onto him in a heartfelt embrace, tears flowing in relief. She takes his face in her hands, so happy to see that he’s okay, which is of course exactly when Yoon-hee arrives on the scene.

Yong-ha clocks her reaction, and wonders aloud, “Did something happen, or didn’t it?” Wouldn’t you like to know?

Back at Sungkyunkwan, it’s time for open house and another big sports match, this time a game resembling hockey. The teachers worry about the class war that usually breaks out on the field (in the form of actual fighting).

All the students start to back the Soron dorm, assuming that the Jalgeum Quartet will win, as they are in the King’s favor. This makes In-soo more glowery than usual, as the wheels start turning in his head.

Sun-joon walks Hyo-eun home, and when she asks in a roundabout way if she can come to the open house, he answers in his Sun-joon-esque way that it wouldn’t be against the law. Haha. She interprets that to be a heartfelt invitation, which just makes me nostalgic for those teenage crushes where we’ve all taken such blank words and imbued them with so much meaning. Sigh.

Yong-ha and Yoon-hee arrive back at school, and Yong-ha explains that open house is the reason why he’s still here at Sungkyunkwan—it’s the day when women can enter campus freely. He notes that Sun-joon will surely invite Hyo-eun.

He notes her reaction, tsk-tsking the love triangle that only he knows about. He tells her that it’s a shame, since there’s someone whose blood ran dry, waiting for her…

Jae-shin, in true manly fashion, takes out his sexual frustration on a poor defenseless ball and stick. I sort of love that the man of action has been rendered useless in this scenario, making him feel doubly pent-up.

Yong-ha shows up to call attention to the fact that he waited up all night for Yoon-hee, taking the opportunity to manhandle him again. God, the skinship between these two is enough to fuel a spinoff series.

He tells him that something happened to her on the island, sending him running like the wind…

…only to be stopped by Yoon-hee, asking where he’s running off to so fast. He looks back at Yong-ha, who blows him a kiss. Cheeky boy.

She apologizes for making him worry, and he says in his usual gruff way that he didn’t worry and for her to go rest. She walks away and he does too, but then something dawns on him (Feelings? Is it…feelings?) and he turns back around.

He marches up to her purposefully, swinging her around to face him. Omo…are you going to kiss her? You look like you’re going to kiss her!

Jae-shin: You…you little…from now on, you stay in my sights at all times. Wherever you go, whatever you do, stay in my sights. Because I thought I was losing my mind.

SPLAT.

If you keep making me faint like this, I’ll never get through this episode.

Yong-ha returns to his room to find Sun-joon waiting for him, desperate for some advice. Yong-ha tells him to spill his beans, as he’s better at keeping secrets than he appears. Sun-joon asks if it’s the law (not legally, but law of the universe) for all men to like women. Without hesitation, Yong-ha answers, “No. Where is there a law like that in the world? It’s instinct.”

Sun-joon asks if it’s natural that rather than a girl he hardly knows, he feels more comfortable around his friends. Yong-ha doesn’t let him skirt the issue, asking directly if he’s saying that he likes guys. He starts to stammer, trying to ask but not ask…

Yong-ha: You want to be close to him? Touch him? Ah, I’ve experienced that before…Guh-ro.

Okay, you’re really not making this easy. Peel…self…off…floor.

Yong-ha says that he’s felt that way about Guh-ro, enough to question whether or not he likes boys. Well, that’s definitely what I always suspected about your overcompensation, lady-killer-wise. If the two of you end up as the second pairing, I may die of happiness right then and there.

He hands Sun-joon the book that’s always saved him, and warns him to only read it when he’s alone. He ends with these parting words, “It’s a sin to hate, but how can it be a sin to love? No matter who it is.” Aw, I love you more than words right now.

Sun-joon sneaks a peek in the red book of hetero-normative instincts, and his eyeballs nearly pop out. Heh.

Meanwhile, In-soo comes up with a plan for keeping the Noron-Soron war at bay during the match. He comes up with a “random” method of team division. This is, of course, just a way to split up the Jalgeum Quartet, and it works—Jae-shin / Yoon-hee on one team, and Yong-ha / Sun-joon on the other.

Yong-ha sees right through this, noting that In-soo is simply pitting Noron (Sun-joon) against Soron (Jae-shin) anyway. He asks why he’s also on team Noron, and In-soo replies that he’s one of them, calling him “my person,” like a possession. Yong-ha retorts with fire in his eyes, “Who says? I’m Gu Yong-ha. I have no plans to be anyone’s ‘person.'” Ooh, learned a thing or two about being a badass from Guh-ro, eh?

He softens to his usual self, as he adds that if In-soo wants to keep him around, he should make it more fun, because right now he’s being really boring. Ha. I do enjoy the consistency of his bored playboy character.

Jae-shin takes Yoon-hee out to practice, and he starts out yelling because he can’t really express anything else, but then he softens up and finally shows her how to properly hold the stick, holding her hands in his. She looks up at him with her giant doe eyes, smiling, and he gets so uncomfortable that he breaks away.

Sun-joon watches them from afar, his heart heavy from the jealousy, compounded with his feelings that aren’t…supposed to be. He practices nearby, hearing Yoon-hee say all the things to Guh-ro that he wants to hear. I do so enjoy the dynamic of Yoon-hee looking up to Jae-shin, and Sun-joon’s jealousy of that, not romantically, but even if they were three boys.

He walks away suddenly, trying to tamp down his feelings. Yoon-hee follows, and he hides, putting his hand over his thumping heart. Aw.

Later that night, the King gets news of a disturbing turn of evens—the Red Messenger kills three royal guards, and steals money to give back to the people. Even the King notes that this is uncharacteristic of the Red Messenger, but these actions can no longer be ignored.

Aw, crap. A fake Red Messenger? What will Guh-ro do?

The King regrets having to do this, but murder can’t go unpunished. He orders the Red Messenger captured at once.

Minister Ha is the one behind Fake Red Messenger, and brags to Minister Lee that they won’t have to worry, since eventually, the imposter’s actions will lead to the real Red Messenger’s capture.

Minister Lee thinks the plan is riskier than he’d like, and threatens to take back their kids’ marriage plans. Basically, he dangles up Hyo-eun’s entry into his family as a prize—if Minister Ha can catch the Red Messenger, they’ll discuss marriage. Damn. You’re cold AND powerful. And it’s bizarre to think that Guh-ro’s capture will lead to Sun-joon’s engagement if this all goes according to plan.

Guh-ro reads the news the next morning, scoffing. You shouldn’t be scoffing. This is going to get you sent to the head-chopping place! Hire a lawyer! And a CSI team.

Open House begins at Sungkyunkwan, and the ladies arrive in their best dresses. Yong-ha reigns as the big man on campus, with a row of girls a mile long trailing behind him. Now we know why it’s his favorite day.

Yoon-hee’s mother arrives as well, and Professor Jung finds her first. She’s shocked to see him, as she knows him from her husband’s days as a professor. He tells her that he knows about Yoon-hee being a girl, and she says that she’ll take all the blame and take Yoon-hee away at once. But Professor Jung knows Yoon-hee well enough by now, and tells her that there’s no stopping this girl.

He confesses that Yoon-hee sparks a desire in him to teach her, and that SHE is teaching HIM that men and women…can be equal. He starts to say that perhaps someday in Joseon…

But her mother wonders why Yoon-hee must be the one to pave the way. As Mom, of course she wants to protect her daughter from the pain and struggle. I hate to break it to you, Mom—your love for her breaks my heart, but there’s really no way she’s going to live quietly the way you want her to.

Professor Jung tells her that it’s because of Yoon-hee…because of his smart, talented daughter, that her husband wanted a governorship. He wanted to create a new world where his daughter could use her gifts. Oh my god, I might be crying. I’ve never met this man, but he sounds epic.

Over lunch, Yoon-hee asks her mother why she was never told about her father, and Mom just pleads with her to safely finish her studies and return home quietly, so they can look back on this time and laugh about it. You’re in for some rough waters, Mom. If that’s all that education was, the world would never change.

Cho-sun arrives on campus as well, searching high and low for Yoon-hee. In-soo sends for her first, and she sits down for tea. After giving due diligence, she gets up, saying quite clearly that he isn’t the person she came here to see. He grabs her wrist, holding her back.

She keeps her calm, saying coolly that she feels sorry for him—how is it that he thinks that everything in this world exists for him to possess? She asks for him to let her be, and walks away. She’s nine kinds of awesome. I really wish we saw more of this character.

In-soo just gets lost in reverie, remembering that she wore something similar the day he first met her, when she came to his house at the age of ten. Ah, so first love, eh? That doesn’t make you less creepy for wanting to possess her, but I see why you’re so fixated.

Yoon-hee thinks about her mother’s words as she hides in the library, and Guh-ro finds her there, asking why she’s hiding on a day like this. After all, she’s got the name Daemul to live up to. Heh.

She marvels at seeing him in the library, of all places—she’s never seen him in here before, and he nonchalantly says it’s because he’s read everything in here. She scoffs, and then pauses…no, it couldn’t be…she checks the books, and sure enough, his name is there on all the cards. She looks up at him, impressed. You TOTALLY did that just to impress her, you lovesick fool! Hahaha.

They sit down to eat together, and Yoon-hee teases him for not having a single girl here to visit him, let alone anyone in his heart. Jae-shin: “So? That’s why I’m eating with you.” Swoon.

Just then, Yoon-hee sees Sun-joon across the way, and Jae-shin catches her looking at him. Gah, the looks! The silent looks in this love triangle are enough to wring my heart dry.

When two girls realize who Jae-shin is, they rush over to either side of him, sending him hiccupping and running away in fear.

Hyo-eun calls Yoon-hee over to their table, insisting that they eat together, and she almost manages to slip away, until Cho-sun arrives. Commence dinner of most awkward proportions.

Within about two milliseconds of awkward tension, Cho-sun gets the score. She watches Sun-joon carefully, making Hyo-eun think that she’s eyeing him in the other way. She plays up her flirting, feeding him, which just raises Yoon-hee’s ire, making her tend to Cho-sun, which irks Sun-joon, who turns to Hyo-eun as a distraction. Hahaha. It’s a merry-go-round of passive-aggressive flirting.

Sun-joon assumes that Yoon-hee’s heart belongs to Cho-sun, and Yoon-hee assumes the same of Sun-joon and Hyo-eun. But Cho-sun gets up abruptly, saying that she shouldn’t have come here tonight, declaring that Yoon-hee’s heart doesn’t belong to her.

Whoa. She calls her out on it right there on the spot, declaring that she’ll guess to whom her heart really belongs…

She walks over to Sun-joon’s side, gives Yoon-hee a look, then kisses Sun-joon on the cheek.

COMMENTS

What a fan-friggin-tastic episode. This is really the most compelling love triangle I’ve seen in a while, because most lead pairings are so overtly ahead of the pack. Despite knowing that Sun-joon and Yoon-hee are meant for each other, I enjoy the dynamic of the various hurdles, most of all because of the situations and feelings that they stir for all involved. Jae-shin’s growing relationship with Yoon-hee, from hyung and protector to oppa and love interest is so cute it kills me. It’s not even like I want him to get the girl, (Okay, I want at least one hot kiss before Sun-joon gets the girl—let’s be real.) but I adore his changes as a character because of his growing love for her.

As for Sun-joon, I love how far he’s come…to question his sexuality, to question the law. For his character, it’s an epic shift, and one that I think will take the story to new heights.

I don't know how many times I squealed, pounced on my computer, said "no way!" watching this episode. And I was so glad I watched it in the privacy of my own room instead of in the library (as I am wont to do sometimes instead of studying) because otherwise other students might have thought I've gone crazy.

To all of you Moon Jaeshin lovers out there, I too, am a rabid fan of Gul-ro. His innocent hiccuping and cute antics totally won me over. I've never "shipped" over to the second lead's side quite so completely before this series, but I have to say, Moon Jaeshin has my heart. And has my normally more jaded and cynical self squealing with girlish glee.

I always had the "Other Guy Syndrome".. so I am not surprised at myself for rooting for Jae Shin rather than Sun Joon.

Seriously though, I did not expect Jae Shin to be THIS cool, THIS sexy, THIS charismatic, and THIS awesome.

As GF mentioned earlier, his crush on Yoon Hee KILLS me.

I think this is the first time for me that i EQUALLY love all the male leads to bits and pieces..

Sun Joon = his noble principles and beliefs between RIGHT vs. WRONG.. I'm starting to fall for this guy as I witness his confusion, suffering, jealousy and love for Yoon Shik.

Yong Ha = for being the smartest (and sharpest!) aleck in town, the most adorable smile to flash around, and his intriguing display of loyalty and bromance with Guh-ro and his sexiness when he suddenly becomes serious and angry. I love it every time he says.. "I'm Gu Yong Ha.." as a reason for all his actions.

Jae Shin = too awesome for words alone. Undisputed runaway hit on this drama. I hope he gets a New Actor Award.

Ok, so I am blabbing all over the place about how fantabulous this show is. It is fantabulous!

I have been explaining it to non-kdrama people at work and in my apartment building. That is how I know I shall always and forever love this show. WhenI start to preach it like a sermon to all that will listen and even to those that won't, I know I have perfection.

I love this show!

I'm irrevocably in lurve with this drama and your recaps! Thank you for your insightful, witty, and unashamedly fangirly thoughts. :D It's refreshing when someone recapping embraces the fandom with such gusto.

There was epic squeeing at GYH's confession, because I totally thought he was overcompensating too... I mean, I still believe he likes girls, but MJS is completely worthy of his homoerotic-bromantic affections. Now, if only MJS would reciprocate...That would be, like, glorious television. The cataclysmic squeeing might actually bring about the apocalypse. You know, the one where we all die happy.

*sighs* MJS and GYH are my official OTP. Yeorim can totally pick up the pieces of Guh-ro's shattered heart after the inevitable happens.

Something I just thought of:
You know, if MJS's brother and KYH's father had lived, they might have actually got to know each other earlier in their lives... and could have even ended up betrothed with their families being tight and all. KYH and LSJ really are star-crossed lovers seeing as both their fathers were at complete opposites of the political spectrum: one protecting the Geumdeungjisa, the other trying to make sure it never sees the light of day. Crazy how all this fate stuff tends to go down...

OH. MY. GOD. You are right.

Jae Shin and Yoon Hee could easily be betrothed to each other because of the relationship between their families!!!

This sucks because I am now thinking of an alternate reality in which Jae Shin's brother and Yoon Hee's dad are still alive, and all that WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN..

Damn you Fate!

Or some crap like that.

Y HALLO THAR, IRONY

That's a really good point, and one I hadn't considered. I know there will be epic angst when Yoon-hee finds out that Sun-joon's dad is most likely semi-directly responsible for her dad's death (maybe. probably). And the matching baggage for Yoon-hee and Jae-shin will only exacerbate itself, I'm sure, since I bet all of these possible revelations will happen at the same time for maximum ~*drama*~. But I hadn't thought back that far. I'm still waiting for her dad or his brother to potentially be alive and in hiding somewhere.

And- second, third and infinity the motion for Jae-shin and Yong-ha. They are really pouring it on thick- I would give a lot to be on the set of this drama with popcorn; I bet it's a blast.

Your mentioning star crossed lovers idea reminds me of the drama "You're Beautiful" and their story line. Another beautiful set of guys with a girl in the midst and the parental history that sets them on opposite sides. Oh what will happen to these two? Can't wait to see.

Any scenes that involved Jaeshin + Yoon Hee and Jae Shin+ Yong Ha, kills me. I am swooning, splatting (thanks for that word GF), squeeing, giggling and all the ...ings out there!

I agree with the other posters, if JS and Yong Ha ended up together (romantically or otherwise), works for me, too. I looove looove them both equally.

SPIN-OFF,SPIN-OFF,SPIN-OFF, PLSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

This morning I was about to go to sleep at around 1:30am when I just thought well Korea time is 1 hour ahead than mine, let me take a peek at Dramacrazy.net to check if by chance E14 is already up. Wow, lo and behold it was. So I ended up sleeping at 3:00am then woke up at 7:30am to prepare for work.

I am now very sleepy at work but its ALL WORTH IT.

I think other modern-day K-dramas need to take a girl-power lesson from SKKS. *cough* Playful Kiss *cough*

Thank you for the recap, girlfriday!!!

On the SKKS spectrum of things, I felt that this episode was just a bit weak and that the romantic storyline and triangle were drawn out a teensy bit too long. SKKS's biggest strength is knowing exactly how to time things- how long a scene should last, how long to wait to show something, etc..and thought this episode slipped a bit. This feeling is also probably due to me being more engrossed by the school camaraderie and social aspect than the romance. I want them to be buddies more than romantic interests.

Nevertheless, still pretty awesome! Moon Jae Shin is just too cute. I almost died at the “So? That’s why I’m eating with you" line! And the part where Yong Ha took Hyo-eun on his horse!

But the winner of this episode is yet again Yoon-hee. A girl who can build a fire by searching for dry wood and tearing branches with her bare hands! That is a total win!! And she didn't get sick from the rain! She is really a man above all men! Daemul!

"God, the skinship between these two is enough to fuel a spinoff series. "---- i love the Guh-ro and Yong Ha moments. I really want to see them as little boys too!

I also love that line from Jae-shin. But i felt bad for him when Yoon-hee got distracted by Sun-joon and didn't get what he is trying to tell her. GAH! He should've told her that she's been found out by him.

And yes! Yong-ha riding on his horse! So.Hotness.!

this really is the most compelling triangle i've ever seen in a kdrama... and it's not confined to the bitchy/manipulative extra character, which makes it doubly awesome. It's nuts, every time Guh Ro does something nice for Yoon Hee i squeal and every time Sun Joon does something i squeal too - they've really built a solid solid triangle, I don't know who to root for! I know Yoon Hee and Sun Joon are Meant To Be, but Guh Ro is so.adorable. Don't know why, but the whole jealousy thing really gets to me in this drama. The tension they've managed to create is amazing. Can't wait to see what happens next.

Thanks Girlfriday!

I agree that ep 12 is the best thus far but for me, ep 13-14 tops this one.. but hey, I'm getting ahead of myself...

Moon Jae Shin is officially my no.1 bias in SKKS... and Yongha should totally end up with him.... sure he looks cute with hyo eun but the chemistry between him and MJS just screams to me... hotness scale exploded...

sigh.... those lovesick fools... why so roundabout? haha.
oh well, that's what i love about these love triangles, rectangles, pentagons, hexagons or whatever else this whole mess is...

Now I am torn between Jae Shin and Sun Joon...I have always lean towards first lead in any dramas and for the first time for the 2nd lead managed to steal the scene whenever he appear....swoon
Jae Shin will faced major heartbreak but he'll always have ever dependable mischievous Yong Ha by his side....their bromance kills me for the cute

There are so many moments of just pure WIN in episode 12! Eleven was perfect as well, but twelve was just in a completely different world! So much payoff for our collective patience and squealing!

It was amazing to see/find out/confirm:
1. Jae Shin finally being forthright and telling Yoon Hee to stay within his sights always, that he was driven crazy worrying over her. Too bad it doesn't register with our girl just yet. He got in the FIRST CONFESSION!
2. Sun Joon in full on angst mode. Ah, my heart! Sun Joon, you will get there and will love her more than you thought possible. Their time on the island was perfect; amazing balance of heartfelt, poignant, sweet, painful and hilarious. Sun Joon grinning like we've never seen him do before!
3. Yong Ha!!! Our questions are finally being answered! Sun Joon confiding in Yong Ha. The dock scene.
4. In Soo and Cho Sun's backstory! His first love, and his is pretty tragic too. Has anyone seen Damo here? Similiar in that the young master of the household has been in love with the slave girl, now a giseng, for years!

Micky really killed it this episode. I'm really sold that he's Lee Sun Joon.

I wrangled my friend into watching it. It's her first kdrama. She is beyond ecstatic. She caught up in 2 days, and while waiting for 11 and 12 to be subbed, finished Coffee Prince. =)

Well clearly in Damo, she wasn't a giseng but a damo. LOL. I think I added that "giseng" part to make clear I was referring to Cho Sun in the incomplete metaphor. It's late and my writing suffers because it's melted from watching three episodes in a row. Just died from the cute!

Oh, 2010. The year of our collective obsession with SKK Scandal.

Yaaaay girlfriday! You have ALL THE AWESOME. I can't count the times in your recap that I squealed and clapped like a seal.

Haha, I initially read the "sights" in Guh-ro's quote as "nights," even though I've seen the subtitles. Freudian slip much?

"SPLAT", "self-peeling" ad nauseum- SERIOUSLY. I am dead from the epic hotness in this episode. And adorableness. Can we make "hot-dorable" a new word? Hodorable? Adorahot?

I love that even though Jae-shin turns into a 14 year-old boy around Yoon-hee maturity-level wise, he does very little of the actual wrist-grabbing. He'll grip her shoulders, but somehow this seems less invasive to me. He's just so awkwardly, wonderfully tender, and this contrasts sharply with his Crazyhorse persona and highlights the tenderness more, I think. Plus I'm sure he's got issues from his brother being killed that make him afraid to care for anyone, and totally focused on protecting them once he does.

YONG-HAAAAA. Holy crap. He is amazing on so many levels. From being open-minded to benignly (and not so benignly) selfish, his character is so delightfully flawed. In my head, he is covering homosexuality with his playboyness, which I find very realistic- a guy friend of mine did this for years before he came out of the closet. I also love him for his independence, which is apparently really hard to come by in this time period. It helps a little that we haven't seen his parents yet, unlike Sun-joon and Guh-ro. Maybe his parents don't pay attention to him and that's why he pretends not to care what anyone thinks, yet clearly dresses and acts to stand out?

Actually, everyone is kind of realistically flawed. I know we have some larger-than-life characters, with Guh-ro's miraculous ability to heal from mortal-looking wounds in the space of a night with no medical care (really, drama?) but everyone is really well fleshed-out, methinks.

Even though I looooove Jae-shin, the drama has portrayed very little chemistry from Yoon-hee to Jae-shin; she clearly views him as more of a big brother. Although perhaps that reaction is slightly unrealistic, we can still argue that she and Sun-joon are more intellectually complementary.

Not to mention the fact that Sun-joon is awesome. Mickey is doing a great job of communicating the slow, deliberate deepness of Sun-joon's character, and the fact that there is a lot going on in his head. I would be much more against the main pairing if Yoon-hee had less chemistry with Sun-joon and more with Jae-shin, but she clearly only has eyes for Sun-joon.

Also, I wonder how much the writers are aware of the bromance fangirls. Or outright slash fangirls. Meaning, are they telling Song Joong-ki to act the way he is, or is that just his interpretation of the character? Does anyone know his orientation in the novel?

It always seems to me that the entertainment industry doesn't acknowledge the fact that even though straight guys love to see girls making out, straight girls might like the same type of thing- do they think/want us to be too pure for it, or something? I mean, we know the main audience for this is girls. Not that we don't love us some political intrigue. But with dramas like this with the blatant skinship, it seems like maybe the entertainment higher-ups have more of a clue than we think. Maybe it's more prevalent in Asia than America, what with the (slightly) more accepted yaoi and all. People have probably speculated about this but I haven't found too many articles about it. Portrayal of homosexuality/ bisexuality in k-dramas= next Dramabeans pop culture post y/y?

ANYWAY enough rambling/procrastinating from me (go away, scientific papers! I don't want to read you!). Thanks so much for weighing in on this fantastic drama!

The love female readers/viewers have for boy on boy love is actually a rather well-known and acknowledge phenomenon, especially within the manga/anime world but in Far East Asian pop culture-dom (Or at least among those who study it). In the anime/manga world, there's an entire genre devoted to such stories. Also a well-established trope is that of cross-dressing girls masquerading as a boy in all-boy environs.

That said, I'm totally reeling at all the exploration of marginalized sexualities and sexual identities in K-dramas since 2005: Jumong's hermaphrodite, Coffee Prince's genuinely angst-ridden soul searching, Antique Bakery's openly out pastry chef, No Regret, and now SKKS's self-accepting GYH.

I want to be a SKK scholar.

Yeah, I mentioned yaoi in my post, I think. Also what I was thinking about but not really saying very well was how the majority of movies, etc., are shot from the male gaze. Not just girl on girl, but objectifying women without going the other way around, even some "chick flicks." Even though we also love action movies and such where a lot of this happens.

Another blog I read compared the portrayal of Megan Fox in Transformers to the Twilight movies- guys sitting through those complaining about the shirtless guys, not realizing that we have to watch women shot the same way in movies all the time. Proportionally, I actually don't have that much exposure to Asian media- it might be different, what with Rain having a bit of Chronic Shirtless Disorder in his new drama, or some of the other ones we've seen. And even that portrayal is very aggressive- as if guys won't be comfortable seeing him any other way. My thought is that the philosophy in America, at least, is the skinship between guys is there but much more covert.

Anyway, I know that's a slightly different issue from the portrayal of nontraditional sexuality, and that it is well studied in some areas, but not as much in others. I need to watch those other dramas you mentioned so I can figure it out myself. And even though homosexuality is portrayed a lot, it's still not really accepted as a life choice (to my knowledge), which is interesting to think about.

It's not quite the same in America, though, with that kind of media. Lots of the LGBT characters in our media are either stereotypes or demonized. While yaoi (I'm using the Japanese example because that's what I know about; there might be a Korean equivalent) is for the most part accepted entertainment in Asia, I think in America the same type of thing is marginalized.

I always love thinking about what kind of factors drive these trends in entertainment across cultures and countries. In Japan, for example, you've got thousands of years of history, and non-traditional sexuality is accepted to a point- as long as you shape up, marry, and have your kids eventually. America is so much younger, but we've had the puritan mindset that still lingers in a lot of our laws and general attitudes, although you might think on the surface that we're more accepting of homosexuality. I don't know the score so much in Korea, but I would guess that it's still not well accepted.

Anyway. Yong-ha's orientation is a relatively small part of this drama, despite the plot-stirrings that occur from it, and I do with you on the love the explorations that are going on with his character. Even aside from the pretty, Song Joong-ki packs loads of verve and charisma and is a joy to watch.

Ah, sorry. I missed your reference to the yaoi.

I'm not sure if I understand the questions you may have regarding the objectification of women, the male gaze, and skinship between men in K-Drama/SKKS. As for your original question, I would be very surprised if the writers weren't aware of the appeal of yaoi and if they weren't playing with it as well as going beyond it to challenge the audience's attitudes toward gender and sexuality. Although I'm not aware of there being a specifically Korean term for the yaoi phenom, it is a significant trope for Korean girls and women who've grown up reading and watching manhwa, which definitely works with the tropes developed in Japanese manga/anime.

What I find really interesting is the cultural value of skinship between men in a homosocial society such as Korea. I thought it particularly interesting when, after Yongha rescues Jaeshin from War Minister's guards at the start of the archery contest, the SKK minister pats Yongha's butt but the filmmakers make a point of showing how much Yongha detests this. The buttpatting of boys by male elders is - or was at least when I was a kid in Korea - such a familiar gesture but one that would NOT FLY AT ALL in the US, especially now. So, if we juxtapose this type of innocent homosocial skinship with the Yongha-Jaeshin skinship, or even Jaeshin/Yoonshik or Yoonshik/Sunjoon skinship, it plays on multiple levels even for Korean audiences: completely acceptable homosociality especially among the machismo older generation (I'm thinking of my dad's generation), the homoeroticism flying under the radar of accepted homosociality for my generation onward, or the overt yet ambiguous (in that Yonga cannot be taken at face value) acceptance of homosexuality that must be becoming more mainstream in Korea.

If you're interested in watching a very explicit portrayal of homosexuality as a mundane lived experience, you could sit through SBS's Life Is Beautiful. I gave up after the first few episodes because I couldn't stand its explicit upholding of patriarchal values.

As for US pop culture, I just don't see much interest in a yaoi phenom, at least as a distinct cultural trope. I've always found that interesting - that US gay male culture has within it a streak of misogyny or hostility toward any sort of a female gaze, be it appropriating or not. Instead, such a gaze seems to be precluded by the figure of the fag hag.

Anyhow, I should stop now...

You probably missed my yaoi reference because I BURIED IT WITH WORDS. *facepalm* Sorry!

I know, it's hard to stop once you get going. But it's so fun! And so much better than doing other work...

Anyway, I think I'm mixing my references a bit. Here is the blog post that talks about the male/female gaze business:
(http://cleolinda.livejournal.com/891365.html#cutid1) Sixth paragraph down, not counting the block quote, starting with "In fact, I would argue...", and the next paragraph as well. Now that I think about it, it is a completely different issue from the boy-on-boy skinship stuff that you see in Korean dramas. Also, from what you're saying, this gender-centric filming bias might not even be an issue in Korea.

Clearly, I come from an America-centric background, so I don't have a lot of experience with the portrayal of the two genders in other cultures, which I guess I'm saying might be tied to how much the skin-ship etc. is portrayed.

I assumed that a lot of those same gender issues existed, especially with what I've read here about the guys needing to, overtly or covertly, possess the women through wrist-grabbing (argh) or other things, and the demonizing of female sexuality with the gumiho stuff. I spent some time in Japan this summer, as a comparison with another country that at least has a lot of the skin-ship even if it's different with the gender portrayals, but of course there wasn't any discussion about this stuff with the people I was staying with. So the point is, I've got very little actual experience.

Furthermore, there is this perception in America that we are ~*so progressive*~ (yeah, right) when compared to the staid, rigid image of many Asian countries that makes it over. So it's kind of awesome to see that there is the skin-ship stuff and it's not as rigid as the picture I have in my head. Not just on a fangirl level for dramas and such, but seeing how different cultures work in real life. And then, comparing between countries what makes it okay or not okay for that homosociality to be portrayed. I think there's been a bit more of a bromance movement, if you will, in the last couple of years in America, but it's in a totally different way from what I've seen in Asian media.

At any rate, it's really interesting to hear about the different social mores in Korea. I remember that part with poor Yong-ha, but I thought it was just an idiosyncrasy with the drama, and the principal just being goofy. That says something else, then too, about Yong-ha's hang ups. He does that kind of stuff to other people all the time (or at least, to Guh-ro) but only seems to like it when it's on his own terms.

I have to say that Yong-ha really owns my heart in this episode. He's just all kinds of awesome and I love the way he sees more than what our eyes do, and the attention he pays to the world around him. I love though, how he isn't afraid to say he questioned his feelings/relationship with Guh-ro. He's just really brave and I love what they do with his character.

This has to be the show I enjoyed the most this year. It's a perfect mix of eye candy and great story telling. Having never heard of Micky Yoochun before, needless to say, I am now a fan. Since the actor playing MJS does have more chemistry with KYH in my opinion, I wouldn't mind if this drama pulled a "Baker King" and gave us a pairing between the second lead male with the first lead female :)

I love this drama. More than YAB, but not as much as CP.

I didn't think pairing with 2nd lead was ever possible in kdramaland. So Baker King did it!

Unfortunately in SKKS, the story is from the novel/comics (?, sorry I'm not korean) and the ending is already decided. I'd love MJS to have a girl (even it's not YH but pleease no EH!) at the end.

My favourite scene was the last one.
What I liked about it was the hardly-hidden jealousy of YH when watching HE tending to SJ at the table.
I found it rather straight-forward when she reminded SJ of his "promise" (When has he ever promised anything?) that he would not get married as long as he is in SKKS.

I thought she displayed an accusing betrayed-wife tone in her voice, as if she had any right to criticize SJ's love interest.
