Sungkyunkwan ends on a high, Giant approaches 30%

It may have not enjoyed a ratings bonanza, but KBS’s Sungkyunkwan Scandal has surely earned the designation of being a hot mania property (not unlike last year’s youth sensation You’re Beautiful), and the fusion-historical-romantic-comedy series ended with a 12.8% rating on Tuesday.

It’s not a spectacular number, but a solid one that managed to double the drama’s premiere ratings of 6.3%. For a while there it looked as though Sungkyunkwan would find itself stuck in single-digit territory, sandwiched between two heavy hitters (MBC’s Dong Yi, SBS’s Giant), but the finale of the former allowed this little gem to crack into double-digits.

I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say this, but [NOT-REALLY-A-SPOILER ALERT] the drama ended happily with its 20th episode, and thankfully, none of our Joseon Quartet were sacrificed in the process. (You didn’t really think they kill off show-stealer Moon Jae-shin, right?) [/SPOILER]

Meanwhile, Giant stopped just short of breaking the 30% mark with a 29.8%, while Queen of Reversals stayed solidly at 11%. The latter had been hoping for a much stronger run than it’s had thus far, given Queen of Housewives’ runaway success last year, but despite sharing a similarly cute, fast-paced vibe, Reversals hasn’t managed to tap into that special somethin’ to propel it to the same heights. (Although the most obvious answer might be the simplest: There’s no Tae-bong!)

Yoo Ah In's Jae-shin=show stealer, hand down! Would be the greatest crime of the 21st century to kill off Jae-shin.

LOL and I totally agree with you on Queen of Reversals. Although it boasts several of my fav actors, no Tae-bong=no match for Queen of Housewives! Ahhh how I miss Yoon Sang Hyun. Hope to see him in Secret Garden soon.

Hello jb!
just wondering what you meant by:

"It may have not enjoyed a ratings bonanza, but KBS’s Sungkyunkwan Scandal has surely earned the designation of being a hot mania property (not unlike last year’s youth sensation You’re Beautiful)"?

did you mean the ratings or its' mania following?
confused, lol.

i really enjoyed the series...this is the first kseries that i have watched even on raws though i dont know korean at all...lol...and it made me always look forward to mondays and tuesdays most of the time (i guess i got the sickness too....lol)

the ratings may not be as high as the others have..but its quite more than that...guess they should have counted the number of international viewers too...

i usually fast-forward the some scenes that i dont like...but to this last episode i stayed from the beginning to end watching raw...it sure was a very good show to watch...i laughed and smiled even though the show ended...maybe it got stuck inside me..:-)

skks is indeed worth watching (over and over again)

It's not my mom's Korea or k-drama, fosho!! I really do appreciate that they did depict that aspect of male sexuality. Even female sexuality. Only 3 volumes scribed, ha!!

Shoot, I recommended this drama to my high school aged students. This way way before any of this crept in. Hope I don't get any upset parents calling.

Hi Javabeans,

Thank you for lovin' em smokin' scholars: The show hits 12.8% TV viewership and you make an article with them on the photo and on the heading instead of Giant's. :-)

If they can only measure the internet global viewership of SKKS, Im sure the show would grab the top spot hands down, hahaha!

Has the show been sold already for broadcast in other countries? How about english-subbed DVD release, any dates? And worldwide release of their OST?

Can't get enough of SKKS -- and yet Im controlling myself from watching online the raw videos of episodes 19 and 20.

You are right: It has indeed the makings of a hot mania property! One of the best Kdramas in a long while!

Thanks for featuring all the wonderful recaps of the show here in dramabeans.

Love, love, love SKKS!

Japan already bought skks broadcast right after Micky Yoochun confirmed as a cast (there is also skks photobook special released in Japan, but only Yoochun :p), then North America & Canada also bought it. Nevertheless, since this drama is also broadcasted through kbsworld, so, worldwide, it is.
.
As for DVD, the company current plan is only to release DVD normal version (no director's cut, NO ENG SUB), so if you're interested in getting special DVD, please go here: http://www.scandaldvd.wordpress.com

Thanks so much, Karz.

Yup, we have KBSWorld here in our country; and SKKS is being shown with english subtitles but 10 or 12 episodes late.

H/ever KBSworld can only be viewed by those with cable subscriptions in their homes.

I hope that any of the big local networks would also purchase this kdrama and show it with subtitles in the local languange, or dubbed as it is often done here, so a lot other people can enjoy it as much as I have! :-)

As much as I enjoy KDramas, I usually end up fast forwarding because they drag so. That said, I watched every single episode of Sungkyunkwan & couldn't wait for the new episodes to air. Nice characters, intelligent story, great looking actors & amazing costumes, how did this drama not pull a 20+%. Like you said, if the polls could only include online viewers. By far one of the best dramas this year. Need TV like this one.

NOOOOOOO! T_T i'm faithfully waiting for the subs before i watch the last 2 episodes, but i am already thinking of the dreaded mondays w/out SKKS. talk about a hole in my heart :(

SKKS ----> cute + angst + heart = so. much. awesome.

btw, did anyone else love that scene in ep. 18 when yoon hee was talking to her brother and found out that her dad was actually reading to her? i had like a bunch of somethings in my eyes. as much heartbreak and truly moving scenes that there were between sun joon and yoon hee, i never actually cried. my heart ached for them, but it was this father/daughter moment that totally got me.

Yay for happy endings! But booo for endings :( This is one of those dramas that alllmost makes me sorry I love it so much, cause now I'm so sorry to see it go. It was one of the first historical dramas I've actually enjoyed, and by enjoyed I mean watched entire episodes completely in Korean while awaiting the subs, even though I'm definitely a black girl from the States lol. Patiently waiting for the subs for 19 and 20 though....kind of patiently....hair-pulling, nail-biting patiently.

I'm so curious! How did you fall for k-drama and SKKS? Just to clarify: my question is more what led you to k-drama/SKKS rather than OMG, a black American girl is watching k-drama (For the record, although I'm Korean American, I lurrrrved Hong Kong cinema from before HK became part of China again - came to it by way of my then boyfriend who is as White Anglo-Saxon Protestant blue blood American as anyone can get. He loved Chow Yun Fat.). I'm just curious about your story.

Altho, you didn't ask me I wanted to respond. I am a 57 ur old white female the likes Kdramas. I started watching on Comcast's AZN-My Lovely Sam Soon, then Jumong and hooked. I liked K-dramas because I was tired of CSI programming and "reality" tv. I currently watch dramas on dramafever.com which has Eng Subs and Sm watching KSSS, Runaway, Kim Soo Ra, and Mischievious Kiss. My Girlfriend is a Gumiho starts tomorrow and am looking forward to it.

Let me also share mine :-) Im of spanish/malay/ chinese/indian descent and into my 40's and more than 6 years back a young friend in her 20's lent me her DVD of "Tutor Friend" featuring Kwan Sang Woo and Gong Yoo (in a bit role) and this opened me to the wonders and magic of Korean film and TV series! :-) Have watched a lot since then. My fave being Jewel in the Palace, Jumong, Goong, Coffee Prince, Biscuit Teacher, He's Beautiful, King of Baking, Queen Seon Dok, etc etc and now Sungkyunkwan Scandal :-) But Im already rambling! :-) I also love Japanese, Taiwanese, Filipino dramas but that's another story altogether. ;-) Korean dramas are still the best though! I dont know... its something natural, effortless and yet supernatural and noble that touches the heart - I'd credit the writers behind those beautiful stories more than the excellent direction, production, technology or even cast, although they are all that! In the end, barring race, color and creed, all human race desire inspiration, beauty and grace. :-)

So cool!! I would love to know how all the various international k-drama lovers came to love k-drama. That would make for a really interesting read.

0

No problem! I fell for K-dramas years ago actually I just didn't know it at the time. When I was younger (21 now, so maybe 15-ish then) I used to stay up late and watch the foreign language networks and there was always this one crazy Asian soap on that I could not get enough of. It was pure angst and cute-ness overload, not like American TV at all, and I loved it immediately. Then it went off, and I never found it again, but years later when I started college I actually ran across this website, and I started reading the recaps for Coffee Prince. It reminded me of that soap (not the same story, but the same feelings and reactions while watching). So I watched it (in like two days lol). Then I followed along with Boys Over Flowers, and I was HOOKED. So I guess I've been watching k-dramas (and some Taiwanese) for about 4 years now, and following dramabeans religiously of course. (Plus I've dated a couple Asian guys and it's usually a good talking point when we first meet cause they think it's hilarious.) But yep that's my story.

Man, how happy I am for Giant. It started really slow and now it's near 30%. Not that ratings thrill me or determine what to watch, but when a solidly GOOD drama with an awesome script and actors enjoys such possitive reaction, it's honestly gratifying :D

Every time I see this handle I got a jolt because... it's not me. I used this handle before in YAB and CS/CU. But after CS/CU, I have a long hiatus of kdrama and when I start watching again, there's another 'sam'. So have to get new identity :)

I love SKKS. Every episode outdo the last one. They do maintain consistency. Other than some editing problem, the rest... I like. I really like this writer and PD combo.

Every one of the J4 I like. Not gonna lie. I've watched this lots of time and I'm gonna watch it lots of times more. I hope and pray that Mr X does sub this (like Thundie said), later on.

Thank you to EVERYONE who contributed to this mania...SKKS production team, people in Dramabeans, Viikii, Soompi, Thundie's blog, Ms Tofu's blog, uploaders and fansubbers team. It's been wonderful. You are all in my heart. Thank you from the very bottom of my heart for your gifts of your time and efforts. God Bless

Same here. I've tried to watch other dramas but SKKS has spoiled me. (Tried watching Daemul due to the hype but stopped when it became City Hall redux.)

I'm actually resentful toward MSOAN because wah.... It's like having your bestfriend sister go off to college, then having a new stepsister take over her room and wanting your affection...
