Dream High: Episode 8

Awww, yeah! I love when the tables turn in a drama, when the rules change and there’s constant motion in a plot. I’m really liking the pace of this drama — things move briskly enough that we’re never in danger of plodding along, but not so speedily that they don’t have time to resonate, either. Now it’s time for the fast-trackers to get going and leave the rest stewing in jealousy… just in time for our Misfits to surprise everyone with the stuff they’re made of.

SONG OF THE DAY

Gigs – “짝사랑” (One-sided Crush). This is the song used in the Jason/Pil-sook Post-it scene. [ Download ]

EPISODE 8 RECAP

When Hye-mi gets Jin-gook’s text message to meet at the basement studio, her immediate reaction is to harrumph at the traitor, grumbling that she’s only going to give him a good beatdown for his betrayal… all while primping. You know, a girl’s gotta look pretty when she’s giving the guy she totally-doesn’t-like-or-at-least-would-die-before-admitting-it a piece of her mind. Not that she cares. Because she doesn’t.

Jin-gook’s captor takes him to the airport and says that his father is just trying to protect him, but Jin-gook knows that it’s more like he’s being hidden out of sight because he’s an embarrassment. He’s given a plane ticket to Vancouver, with Mr. Right Hand Man accompanying him to see that he gets settled.

The man walks Jin-gook walk toward the gate, one hand firmly on his back to keep him in line… so Jin-gook waits for the right moment to slip out of his jacket and run away, melting into the crowd. He sheds a pretty tear as he mentally asks his father not to make him hate him (meaning, please don’t do any more things that’ll make me hate you).

Hye-mi waits at the studio for a while before finally giving up. She comes home in a grouchy mood, but as Sam-dong’s mother is there, and she puts on an (uncharacteristically) cheerful face for her benefit.

She even smiles and goes along (albeit with clenched jaw) when Mom brings up marriage, saying sweetly that they haven’t talked about it yet. Sam-dong does get a kick to the shins for blabbing all this nonsense, which, yeah, he deserves.

Jin-gook arrives, intent on finding Hye-mi to apologize, stopping short as Mom enthusiastically greets him, calling him the devoted follower to her son. It’s ridiculous how sweet I find it that these kids all play along with Sam-dong’s absurd lies. Mom pats Jin-gook’s cheek in a maternal gesture and says that he’s her son too, then, and that rattles him a bit, having just come from being dumped by his father.

Mom puts a piece of fish in his bowl as she asks what he likes to eat, and that little gesture is enough to introduce a waver to his voice and a glimmer in his eye as he answers that he likes fish. Aw. He tries to hide his tears as he eats, assuring Mom it’s delicious.

After bidding Mom goodbye, Jin-gook apologizes to Hye-mi for being a no-show, knowing she’s peeved. She confirms that she is — but she’s also noticed Jin-gook’s reaction at dinner and senses that he’s going through something right now, and says she’ll let it slide tonight

As she turns to head inside, Jin-gook grabs her hand and whirls her around, resting his head on her shoulder wearily. Hye-mi pats his head, and he clasps her hand in both of his.

Sam-dong sees Mom off at the bus station, and as she chatters on about how much she likes Hye-mi, his hearing fades in and out again. Argh, if you’re going to make him into bloody Beethoven…! Drama, I don’t care how genius he was, I want Sam-dong to hear!

Interestingly, loan shark Doo-shik decides to foot the bill for the majority of the Rebel Misfit Showcase — a shocking move, since it’s understood that Oh-hyuk is basically digging himself into a grave of debt all by his lonesome. But Doo-shik declares that it’s a fair price “for showing me my dream.” (Omo — Mr. Awkward Loan Shark… possibly becoming a real agency president?)

During a staff meeting at school, Oh-hyuk and Jin-man sneak notes to each other via cell phone, wondering that Kyung-jin might spill the news about their fake showcase to the principal. But curiously, when Oh-hyuk works up the nerve to ask her about it, she says blankly, “Fake showcase? Yesterday? But I didn’t come to the school yesterday.”

The guys wonder why she would possibly side with them. Personally I suspect she may be embarrassed about showing vulnerability in a weak moment, but Jin-man recalls how she’d fallen on top of him (believing him to be Oh-hyuk, I might point out) and his mind goes in a different direction. He sighs, “I think I know why.” LOL. I love how prone he is to flattering his own vanity.

Jin-gook’s father is still intent on withdrawing him from Kirin, so Oh-hyuk asks if Jin-gook agrees with this intent. Getting back a firm denial, he cheerily rips up the form, though he’s under no illusions that this is the end of it — the henchman threatened to take this up with the principal next time.

Jin-gook contemplates the card given to him by the talent agency CEO at the showcase, who has selected him to make his debut next. Despite his initial protests, now Jin-gook thinks of the man’s promise that this is a step toward becoming a world-famous singer.

The rest of the student body soon finds out the names of the students selected for upcoming debuts, which includes a handful of first-years: Shi-hyuk (Jin-gook), Baek-hee, Jason, and Ria. Wait, I thought Ria was already a star…? Maybe she just got a jump on the diva attitude.

Sam-dong and Hye-mi are surprised, not having known till now that Jin-gook had performed at the showcase. They both feel it as a betrayal, particularly Hye-mi, who remembers him telling her he wanted to debut on the same stage with her.

The newly selected are gathered for press interviews, and students gather to watch as Baek-hee is asked who she would thank. She has two answers: Jin-gook, for making the showcase possible for her, and her teacher for telling her that rivals are more important than friends. Naturally that prompts the question of who that rival is, and whether she ought to thank her as well. Baek-hee casts a satisfied look Hye-mi’s way as she says that yes, her rival deserves some thanks for calling her third-rate — after hearing that from her best friend, Baek-hee was spurred with motivation.

Jin-gook has been looking guiltily at his friends, and now shoots a glare at Baek-hee as Hye-mi runs out in tears.

Outside, Hye-mi thinks back to all the harsh words she’d said and finally realizes, “Go Hye-mi, you really were the worst.” Well, enlightenment is better late than never?

It’s Sam-dong who follows her out to ask if she’s okay. She answers that she’s not, because she sees now that while she thought she was Ha-ni (the heroine of a manhwa) when she was actually Naeri (a lesser character). Or Eliza instead of Candy. Sam-dong’s not up on his pop-culture references and doesn’t understand, though he does get the gist of Hye-mi’s self-deprecating mood.

The Top Entertainment CEO, President Yoon, gathers his debut students to tell them that they’ll be beginning training camp next week.

Baek-hee tells Jin-gook she meant her thanks, only to have him answer that if she’s really thankful she won’t talk about him — or Hye-mi — anymore. I like that he doesn’t threaten her, but shrewdly turns it around on her — that if Baek-hee becomes famous, it’ll become clear who her rival is: “That can’t be what you want, is it?”

Zing! What other response could she have but “Why no, Mr. Hot Stuff Whom I Have A Pluto-Sized Crush On, of course not”?

Mr. Right Hand Man is also at the school to try to press his father’s dictate upon him again, but Jin-gook is holding firm. He’s already been noted as a debut student, which would make backing out of Top Entertainment a big mess: “And Father hates messes, doesn’t he?”

When Jin-gook gets home, Hye-mi ignores him while Sam-dong asks him about this debut business. Jin-gook wants to speak to Hye-mi in private, but neither Hye-mi nor Sam-dong are willing to humor him.

Sam-dong even stands up to him and won’t let him take Hye-mi away, leading Jin-gook to an unexpected, high-handed solution: He picks Sam-dong up, deposits him on the balcony, and shuts him out. Heh.

Turning to Hye-mi, he apologizes for not keeping his promise: “But wanting to stand onstage with you… I meant it.” He says this debut wasn’t what he wanted, but he couldn’t help it from happening.

A bit bitterly, Hye-mi answers that it must be nice to get that debut through no want of his own, when she wants it so badly: “I’m not angry at you. No, I don’t know if I have the right to be angry at you, when I’m not anything to you.” The implication is that they mean nothing to each other, and he tries to protests, but she steps back and tells him dully, “Congratulations on your debut. But I can’t say it with a smile.”

In a studio, some random actor (Nickhun, in a cameo), dressed as Romeo, lies in the death throes (or whatever) when a phone call comes through from his “Juliet.” She (Ria) sings him a song and revives him with her angelic voice… is the concept of the CF, which doesn’t work out so well because Ria has a voice to make the dead turn over in their graves, but not rise from them. Funny how she’s debuting as a singer, then. I guess her appearance is supposed to make up for the warbling.

Romeo can’t get into the spirit of the moment, and neither can the producers. They can’t hire another singer because it’ll be apparent it was a lip-synch job… unless they use one of Ria’s Kirin classmates who has a good voice but no hope of debuting.

Who could that be? Enter Pil-sook, who dubs the song to great success, while being told she’ll be credited properly.

Excited about this big career moment, Pil-sook tells her parents the good news. She wants to share her happy moment with someone else, but she’s so shy that as she dials another number, she adorably mutters, “Don’tanswerdon’tanswerdon’tanswer…

But Jason does answer, and then sneaks up behind her as she announces that she’s going to be credited in the upcoming CF. Aww, I foresee a broken heart in the near future. But Jason congratulates her, and these two are so cute it’s ridiculous.

Baek-hee, bolstered with her recent success, now confronts Hye-mi (sporting some very Kyung-jin-like eyeliner) with a superior smirk and hands over the K pendant. No longer the insecure hanger-on, Baek-hee declares that Hye-mi will need it more, and that Baek-hee no longer hates her, or considers her competition. Burn.

Weary and beaten down, Hye-mi just sits there with her head on the table, where Pil-sook comes to join her, seeking some advice.

Pil-sook thinks Jason is starting to like her for real this time, and offers examples that are solid enough that Hye-mi deems them promising indeed. Her opinion bolsters Pil-sook’s good spirits, and as she exults, Hye-mi looks at her in a curious way. She says, half-surprised, “You’re pretty. Why didn’t I see it before?” Hye-mi calls her a star — as in, a leading lady, not just a sideline character. Aw, the unlikely friendship between these two is pretty cute.

Sam-dong heads to a manhwa rental store to ask about the characters Hye-mi mentioned and busies himself in reading. Hilariously, Jin-gook looks at him curiously — Sam-dong gives him the cold shoulder — and asks if he’s wearing his underwear again (HA). Sam-dong just covers himself with a blanket (LOL) and refuses to answer.

At school, Pil-sook works up her courage to leave Jason a note in the form of a heart-shaped Post-it: “You don’t know how I feel.” Puzzled, Jason looks around and finds another Post-it on a nearby locker (which begs the question of what would’ve happened if that student got there first…), and that reads, “No, that’s okay.”

Jason quickly realizes that those are lyrics to a song (the one posted above), and as he follows the trail of heart-shaped breadcrumbs, they say:

You don’t know how I feel, no that’s okay
That time on the way home, you smiled at me
You’re beautiful, more than the sunlight
I like you, more than the universe
I must have a crush on you
I must really love you

Finally, the last note are Pil-sook’s own words: “If you feel the same as I do, come up the stairs.”

His expression grows more serious as he sees Pil-sook waiting for him at the top. She’s sitting there praying for him to come up… and just as I’m thinking he’s not gonna do it, HE DOES IT. AHHHHHH!

Jason sits next to her and says that he didn’t know she liked him so much. She’s fast on her way up to Cloud Nine, but the next words send her crashing back to earth: “Sorry. I do like you, but I don’t think I feel the same as you do.”

Disappointed, she asks why he came up the stairs, then, instead of just going. Jason says that he couldn’t just go without replying — argh, you and your stupid supposedly-American-but-totally-not-really-American-(because-Americans-have-crappy-manners-frankly-let’s-be-honest)-politeness and manners!

Putting on a brave face, she laughs it off through her tears, saying she must have mistook things again and rushes off.

Yet more heartbreak awaits her as she visits her parents’ restaurant, where Mom and Dad are watching TV with their cameras out, ready to take a snapshot of their daughter’s big moment. But to her horror, Pil-sook sees that she’s been Smelly Cat’ed, and it’s her voice singing along to Ria’s angelic, pretty, thin image. Worse yet, the written credit is given to Ria as well.

This time Pil-sook joins Hye-mi in the headdesking, saying sadly that she must not be a leading lady after all. Hye-mi pats her hand, and it’s a sad, touching beat as they just sit there, tears falling in silence.

In a photo shoot for the soon-to-debut-idols, President Yoon congratulates Ria on her CF, and asks about her voiceover artist. Ria confirms that the girl isn’t debut material (and therefore no threat to the con) since she’s 30 kg overweight.

Overhearing, Jason confronts Ria for taking credit for Pil-sook’s voice. Ria lies that she wasn’t in on the plan, but Jason calls her out for the shoddy excuse.

On his last night in the Misfit house, Jin-gook sees Hye-mi trudging home, but as she has been diligently giving him the cold shoulder, he quietly leaves without saying anything. In her room, Hye-mi finds a box he’d left behind, containing his spare helmet and his earphones. That, finally, unleashes a flood of sweet memories, and she starts to cry.

Sam-dong finds her outside later, standing in the cold wearing the helmet. When he lifts the helmet off her head, he sees that she’s been crying and asks what’s wrong — but something in her tone warns him as she asks, “Can I really tell you what’s wrong?” and he says no, he doesn’t want to know after all. Hye-mi barrels past his protests and says he ought to know, admitting that she’s crying because of Jin-gook.

Sam-dong yells at her not to say it, then reconstructs the truth in a way that he can handle — that yes, she’s crying because of Jin-gook, but it’s out of jealousy because he is debuting first. Holding back tears, he tries to smile and assure himself that this is the truth. Poor, heartbreaking boy.

While taking out the trash, Oh-hyuk finds a stash of crumpled drawings, which he assumes are Hye-mi’s. Hye-mi sees the manhwa images and knows right away that it was Sam-dong, in response to what she’d told him about being Naeri — he’d made her into the heroine. He has redrawn the Misfits into these manhwa characters, even adding in an evil Baek-hee with her evil eyes.

Hye-mi asks Oh-hyuk if she seems like a Naeri, and he agrees, which makes her grumble that he could’ve at least fibbed to make her feel better.

Oh-hyuk clarifies that if the drama of Hye-mi’s life were to end here, she’d be Naeri, as the girl who insulted her friend and let pride be her downfall. But if her drama were to end later, “Then the story changes. If you realize your mistake and reflect on it, fix it, and mature — then you can be the heroine of that drama.” He assures her that she has plenty of time to grow.

In class, Hye-mi shows Sam-dong the drawings, and immediately he lurches after them. In the brief runaround, her hair gets caught in his jacket, and while he works to untangle them, she asks how the story continues. He doesn’t know, but she declares that she thinks she does — it’s time for them to win now. Yes, please!

In the halls, Pil-sook attempts to evade Jason and ends up drawing his concern when she hits her head on a locker. She asks him to quit acting out of sheer politeness, but he says that she keeps weighing on his mind — which is precisely the type of term that kdrama heroes tend to use about heroines that they don’t know they’re in love with yet. Pil-sook brightens at this proof that he doesn’t hate her, and he clarifies that no, he does like her — as a friend.

With new hope, Pil-sook asks if he’d reconsider his answer (about likng her) if she were to come back thinner and prettier — say, in 200 days’ time. Jason thinks to Ria’s comment that Pil-sook might have debut potential without her extra 30 kgs, and agrees.

This fresh motivation spurs Pil-sook into action, and she seeks advice from her teacher, wondering if it’s possible for her to lose 30 kg in 200 days. The teacher answers (ugh), “There are no ugly women in the world, just lazy ones.” Oh, I hate you so much, just for the sheer principle of it.

So over the next few months, Pil-sook works at her new diet and exercise regimen, and the Misfits watch as their classmates — arranged into the group “K” — make their debuts and enjoy a swift climb in popularity.

Finally, by day 200, we finally see Pil-sook — aptly singing to “Video Killed the Radio Star,” although perhaps it’s not so apt anymore, since she’s newly slim and prettified.

By now, K is a sensation, and a mob greets them as they pull up to Kirin. Jin-gook beelines for the Misfit class — it’s empty — and amusingly, so does Jason.

Neither guy has found who he’s looking for, and they split off into opposite directions. Happily, Jason finds a welcome lollipop stuck to his locker, just like old times.

But he walks right by Pil-sook, not realizing who it is until she stops him, giving him a chance to read her nametag. His eyes widen to see how much she’s changed.

Jin-gook prowls around looking for Hye-mi, and comes upon a dance studio where a crowd has amassed, watching two students inside. The backlighting makes it hard for him to make out the figures, and he squints as he tries to figure out who he’s watching.

It’s only gradually that he and a shocked Baek-hee are able to discern that Hye-mi and Sam-dong are the center of attention, impressing everyone with their dance moves, including them.

As they dance, Oh-hyuk’s words to Hye-mi repeat:

Oh-hyuk: “Your drama has a long way to go before it’s over. So don’t force yourself to go quickly. If you go slowly, you can see a lot more, in more detail, than the people who go quickly. If you ask me who would grow more between those two, I’d say it’s the one who goes slowly and sees a lot.”

COMMENTS

Yay for reversals! I’m a sucker for this stuff — I just eat it up. Obviously we all knew that our Misfits were going to succeed eventually, but this introduces an interesting, not-quite-black-and-white rivalry with Jin-gook in the wrong group, and Jason stuck there as well. There’s also that foreshadowing that K has ascended too quickly to make it for the long haul, while the gradual, slow risers will be in it for the long haul. I’m fully expecting lineup changes and group shakeups, as they did with the defection of Jin-gook to Team Hotshots, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens from here on out.

I’d been anticipating yet half-dreading Pil-sook’s transformation, because the issue of starlets and weight loss and prettification is a touchy one at best, and positively incendiary at worst. Again we get into the issue of Dramas Aren’t Reality vs. Art Reflects Culture and Shapes It, So Don’t Be a Damned Idiot About Representing Things Irresponsibly. And while there may have been better ways to approach the issue — like Pil-sook being motivated, of all things, because of a guy (realistic, but sadly so) — I can accept the 200-day agreement because of the way Jason reacts (thankfully).

If he’d just agreed to rethink things when she got skinny, I’d have wanted to hit him over the head with a tire iron and disavow any affection for the Milk Couple (so-called because the real-name smooshing — “WooU,” from Wooyoung and IU — means milk in Korean). But the drama makes it a point to indicate that Jason is thinking of Pil-sook’s debut potential, and couches his agreement in the terms of wanting her to succeed for herself. A bit clunky, but better than the alternative, yeah?

Damn, when Jingook was crying because he wasn't used to having a mother calling him handsome and treating all nice. Made me shed a tear. Also when he was telling his father to stop making him hate him.

I think this isn't really your typical korean drama, so you can't really say Jingook seems like the typical lead while Samdong seems like the typical second lead. If you were to compare it to a typical korean romance, the main lead is supposed to share the happiest memories with the girl, but it seems like most of Hyemi's happy moments were with Samdong instead. Also, while the main lead constantly has misunderstandings with the girl, it always resolves in the end, but so far, Jingook hasn't really done anything to 'reconciliate' with Hyemi after each fight. I don't know, but I don't think it's gonna be as simple as Hyemi ends up with one of them and forgets completely about the other. It's definitely gonna be more profound, since this is supposed to be an inspirational drama.

Personally, I can't find anything likeable about Jingook's character. Yes, I do sympathise with him and his angst, but while I don't need him to be the knight in shining armour, it's certainly disappointing that he doesn't seem to understand Hyemi, and that he only does what is right for HIM. It seems to me that he likes Hyemi, but isn't willing to make the sacrifices or the effort to better understand her, whereas Samdong seldom tries to vy for her attention, and merely concentrates on making her happy through his every action. I think by this stage, it should be clear that Jingook is definitely NOT the guy who's perfect or fated for Hyemi. I won't say Samdong is either, cos Hyemi's clearly not reciprocating his feeling at the moment, but that only leaves more space for the plot to develop :)

And while the weight issue might be touchy in society, I think every teenage girl out there can understand pilsook's need for a transformation. When a girl likes a boy, even if she has sufficient self-confidence, she'd still want to look her best for him. In Jason's case, I think it was clever of the directors to show that he's not encouraging her weight loss because of his OWN personal desires, but simply because he wants the best for her.

PS. The preview looks awesome! I can't wait to see the dance competition :D

The only clear leading to a couple in the end is the adorable PS & Jason tandem. It’s possible that Hyemi might not end up with either JG or SD but rather an open - hanging courtship kinda stuff.
Same with BH. Since this drama’s main focus is all about encouragement, I have this gut feeling that the drama might go on to the direction as follows:
1. Hyemi- Her family could go back to where they used to. That’s her ultimate goal anyway. Successful in achieving her dreams. Feelings to either SD or JG gives her a positive outlook experience. - With who knows what happens next as they grow.

2. SD - follow his dad's footsteps. His battle on whatever illness the writer might lead him into, along with the display of his inborn talents with splendid spirit will DEFINITELY play a GREAT role. A very emotional and inspirational presentation, which makes this drama even more worth watching. He always loves Hyemi, no matter what her decision maybe. I don’t think the writer will kill his character. Or else the viewer will kill her/him. 

3. JG - his father will accept him as he'd like him to be. Eventually. Makes him more fulfilled along with his career's success. On Hyemi, happy that she is where he'd like her to be…might not be in couple with her at the end of the drama, yet hopeful. Giving a “May the best men win “in rival to his friend SD.
4. BH – She is more likely a depiction of a “third rate” class who can attain everyone’s dream, but only needs to shrug off the evil likely manner. She may find a new love in the end. Or if there’s a big twist, JG could find her likeable in the end, but not yet a couple, just might progress.
5. PS and Jason… love comes in different sizes. Unrecognized at the beginning, realized along the way, expressed in the end.
Plus, Mr. Kang, teacher Shi and JYP, the love triangle humor. LOL!
Gosh, I’m not addicted to this drama right?

i'm totally on the jingook-hyemi ship but i'm glad i'm not the only one worried about these signs of 'illness' for samdong. he's wayyyyyyyy too cute to get sick and die :( plus this drama is pretty teenagers-aimed so would they really kill off the character? shouldn't they go for the all happy ending in the end?

i really do hope so.

this drama is definitely shaping up nicely and much better than expected. =) i'm glad that they made pilsook lose weight not only because of jason, but also for the crediting. losing weight for a guy she likes definitely doesn't convey a very healthy image for the korean audience

i'm actually a hyemi jingook shipper...but well in the end i think hyemi will ends up with samdong. i think hyemi like jingook at first and in the end she would just fall into samdong's arms. hmm...but so far the episodes are getting better and better.

Question though, why is Jason debuting? Cause he wasn't at the real showcase, so how did he get recruited by them peoples?

I have a question for those of you more up on the whole kpop scene than me. How self aware is the industry about the images it projects of female beauty. I've long noticed that all the starlets are skinny and pale. America's got the same problem, but there's been a concerted effort in the last few years to represent various body types, skin colors, etc in the last few years. They've realize just how dangerous the standard of beauty they were sponsoring is to young girls. Is there such an effort being made in Korea?

I'm just curious because the Pil-sook message is the only thing weighing me down about this drama. So dangerous for a show geared towards teen-aged girls. You don't have to go all unrealistic and ignore her weight because "it's what's inside that matters." But it would have been nice to see more than just a handful of people recognize her worth as a human being at the very least. I just can't get with this "Thank God, I'm skinny now! Finally I can really live!" nonsense.

i know but its the entertainment business. Appearance is everything in Korea. But i agree that this will lead to teen girls asking for plastic surgery at a young age and getting depressed about their appearance. Korea needs to widen their concept on female beauty before the whole nation becomes humans with alien faces.

I completely agree with both. Especially in this business & in the capital they are so obsessed with their looks, that they're forgetting the most important part of a person.

I'm not sure if the society is aware that this kind of image is unhealthy for whole female population. That strong presence of consumerism actually makes young girls to change completely (facial bones structure, ..), so they can be more appealing and be "sold" easily. *shivers*

Lol, all I can say is look at the girl makeup of SNSD (Whose song Genie was already sang by the misfits in the show) and a pretty low note is the Bo Peep song in T-ara which is about the saddest excuse for music I have ever seen.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMMC2Kq5318

is the link to a live T-ara performance of Bo Peep. The song is sadly pretty much 3 minutes of chest/butt shaking to a song that seems to consist of only 3 syllables lol.

I have kind of have half-forgiven the Korean music industry for putting out that piece of crap though since it gave me the biggest LOL on Cinderella's Sister when Moon Geun Young tried to learn the dance though.

I hadn't heard of the song nor seen the dance all the way through until this YouTube video, during which I kept trying to recall where I'd seen someone attempt it. Obviously, I hadn't gotten to the end of your post. Then, I remembered. Mwahahaha! Moon Geun Young in Cinderella Unni, trying to learn the dance to pacify her younger brother after their mom runs away! Mwahahahah! Even the inner monologue that accompanies her attempting this dance is so spot-on!

"코메디는 따로 없다.
하필 이런 상황에서 날도록 이런 춤을 추란다."

I wish I could translate it.

Thanks for the laugh.

BTW no offense against Eunjung who plays Yoon Baek Hee (since she is from T-ara and lol at her in cat ears) the song is shoddy, but I've really be enjoying her performance in DH so far. Definitely one of the characters where I want to see want happens to her since I'm not really sure where the show plans to go with her.

Though more to the point of answering your question. Its not that her life opens up from the weight loss. Its just her ability to debut to the ridiculously judgemental South Korean public as an idol that has been opened up. I agree with anais that Episode 9 at least doesn't go Fairy Tale fantasy with the PS weightloss storyline (I didn't think the show would but the fear is always there)

I really would have appreciated though for a character to acknowledge the silliness of the concept. You know, just to voice the message. I always like it when you have one character who is the voice of reason, who while acknowledging the sad reality of the situation can at least say "It definitely sucks that she has to lose weight for people to acknowledge the talent that has always been there" (Always nice to show seperate viewpoints of touchy subjects like this through diff chars)

When I watched a Japanese drama that involved a girl getting raped by a guy and the guy eventually getting away with it completely. (Because sadly that's the lousy truth about alot of rape incidents in Japan) I was SOOOOOOO pissed off that every character just seemed to accept that. I didn't need the other guy to go to jail even or receive divine punishment. Just one character to scream "THAT IS SO DUMB!!! HOW CAN HE GET AWAY WITH THIS!!!" (Instead the girl got like 4 guy friends to comfort her and help her try to move past the situation. Offender ignored...)

Otherwise I almost feel the writer is acknowledging this crackpot of a situation as okay. Kind of similar the awkward Secret Garden bed scene but 5000 times worse since it was the real deal.

I'm just wondering if the topic is something that's discussed at all or recognized as a problem in Korean society. Just curious... not judging or anything. America is just starting to take notice of this same issue in the last couple of years.

I do know that one of my friends was in Korea doing some research over the summer. She's not a big girl in the least. Just average sized with a good set of curves and she was so frustrated by her inability to shop while she was over there. Nothing in the department stores fit her. That in itself should be traumatizing enough for young girls.

I just know how it is growing up with a standard of beauty that you can never achieve. I'm an African American girl born in the early 80s. The message for me growing up was that the only way for a Black girl to be pretty was to be light skinned with long strait hair; pretty much the whiter looking the better... but you'll still never be as pretty as a white girl. I cant change my skin color so I never worried about that but I wasted many many years of my life trying, and never succeeding, to get "good" strait hair out of my very nappy head and thinking that I was not pretty enough. Luckily, when I was 19 I came to my senses, realized that God made me how He wanted me and I was beautiful, cut out my chemically straitened hair, grew some dreads and generally consider myself the prettiest girl in the room. It's been 10 years and African American girls with dark skin and natural hair are all over the place... in every magazine and commercial and sitcom. But that never would have happened if people like me hadn't started challenging the images we were given and saying "You know what... I'm going to be pretty my way, not yours."

Anyway... that's my soapbox rant of the day. I'll get down now.

You're fortunate that you came of age when you did: post Black is Beautiful, post emergence and mainstreaming of hip hop culture, post rise of the black middle and upper middle class, etc.

As an Asian American, coming of age in the 1980s amidst blond and blue-eyed Americans of Scandinavian and Eastern European descent sucked big time. Let's just say that my baby sister marked off in all sincerity "White" on her college application. Another sister is a photographer for a Korean American magazine that just did a feature on how Asian Americans growing up now have an enviable number of Asian American role models in the media whereas those of my generation and older did not.

Last time I visited Korea, one thing that struck me time and time again was that Korean society seemed to present a much more limited range of ideal anything, be it educational success, career success, etc. Whereas the top-tier of American high school students can choose from the Ivys, the Little Ivys and their like, and the top public state universities and still be regarded as having achieved academic success, Korean students seemed to have a much more limited set of options. It'd be good to get input from a Korean national on this.

Ah! this episode was so good, I kept rewatching the last scene... Some suspension of disbelief was needed though, cause the dance wasn't really impressive XD
I wonder if they made Hye Mi dance less well on purpose, so that Hye Mi would be better at singing, and Baek Hee better at dancing?

Thank you so much, JB! This recap was like a ray of sunshine on this cloudy, rainy day!

I'm confused too...I thought Ria was a star already since she pulled up in van and people crowding all over her (also her diva attitude). I'm suspecting that since can't sing maybe she was a minor actress known more for her looks than her acting who wants to become a singer and went to Kirin? I'm letting my imagination run :)

I knew it was coming, Jason's rejection, but
Pil-sook completely broke my heart, she's so sweet. (What is up with all the Americans are so polite excuse? I knew plenty of guys in HS weren't like Jason!)
I felt bad that she got rejected & snubbed since they credited Ria for her song all in one episode. I love that Hye-mi tries to protect her. I did like how they showed her working out to lose weight instead of miraculously becoming thin.
What is up with all the Candy Candy referrences, this drama sure loves Candy! I haven't thought about it in years!

I'm glad Hye-mi finally realizes that her behaviour before was very hurtful and sets forth a change in her that is more believable than her becoming "nice" all the sudden without learning a lesson.
I'm glad to see that Misfit Mafia shining. Sam-dong is so adorable, drama better not make him deaf or have him develop some other trauma.

All of them will become successful idol. And 99% of idol don't have serious relationship (and married) before 30 years old.

I like just realized this but Ria was probably famous for some other reason besides musical talent hence the fans in the front of the school (probably acting or maybe just daughter of a celebrity) and therefore it mattered that she debuted under the music company label with the other 5 students.

It would explain her utter lack of singing talent later in the CF scene. Wow that took me like a whole day to realize. I was just as confused as javabeans during the debut announcement.

It's now fact that I love Dream High more than My Princess. :) I'm sorry, but the hilarity in MP just seemed to...die or something...but DH has a GREAT balance of both funny and FREAKING heart breaking!

I'm going to be sad in either instances with Sam dong, Hye mi, and Jin gook.
And even more depressed when something happens to Sam dong and his hearing :( ARGGH! I knew this would happen!

But at least Pil sook and Jason will keep my spirits up with there cuteness and obvious romance brewing. :3

I have no idea why this was funny to me, but when Jin gook passed by the re-done tagging of Hye mi I died laughing thinking, "why is that still there?" XDD

But the last scene where Hye mi and Sam dong were dancing that whole time I was like, "BURN!!" But then the ep ended....and I'm sad now...cause I have to wait :(

Thanks javabeans!! :3

Oh and about the American vs Korean politeness. I'm pretty sure Americans aren't THAT nice.
Southern hospitality is a lie (living in the south I should know...they just talk about you behind your back in the end) and the northeast, I'm pretty sure its a survival of the fittest up there (I've lived their too). I've only lived on the east coast so I can't tell you about the west, but this is just my opinion. Although I do agree with someone who said we look out for strangers more than our loved ones, but its only some people with other country's values mixed with America's. *shrugs* agree or disagree this is what I think. :)

Awwww... You have a pretty low opinion of America :( I love this country, and I'm in DC, so its not like I'm surrounded by nice people. I'd agree Americans aren't that POLITE, but we are pretty nice, on the whole, especially in the south and to strangers.

As someone who's lived in three different countries (U.S., Germany, and China), I have to say American people are the most polite to strangers. That's why I think it made sense for Jason to be nice to everyone, including Pil-sook, initially. However, once he got to know Pil-sook, the "I'm just being polite because that's how we do it in America" excuse no longer flew with me. I think once you become friends with a person you just stop being polite for no reason and start acting nice/caring because you actually LIKE them, and that's true in any culture.

Required fields are marked *

I wouldn't say Southern Hospitality is a lie. I lived in the the north for five years when my family first moved to America, but grew up mainly in the South, went to college in the North (Philly... just voted rudest city in America) and am now living back in the South where I belong. Southern Hospitality is definitely real (except on the roadways... but we blame that on Northern Transplants). Neighbors will still greet each other as the pass on the streets, even if they don't know each other. Doors are always held for both men and ladies. You hear "Excuse me," "Please," and "Thank You" all day long. And, if you're out of the city, you can knock on someone's door and still hear "Come in!" without someone checking through the peephole first.

Also, the North has a bad rap, when I moved to Philly I was like "Why are these people so rude and angry all the time?" I hated it. But then I got to know and understand them more and they are pretty polite too, in their own way. They wont nod or smile if you pass them on the street, but they'll hold a door for you or give up their seat on the bus just like they should.

I think Jason's politeness is pretty realistic. I don't know any respectable guy who doesn't hold the door for girls. And I don't know any respectable guy who would just ignore a girl that is waiting for him without going up and giving her the benefit of explaining himself in person.

Interesting. I'll never understand why Ria (in fact the actress) is considered pretty (she was in Coffee Prince too - same attitude: fierce to be pretty) she is (acc. my taste) more ugly than pretty. Slim doesn't necessary mean beauty or pretty, even then there is no beauty without a proper silouethe
Maybe the others can help me understand why the premises where they are filming are so cold - you can see their breath - in house and especially in school. It's due to the small budget? I like the red ears of Jin Gook. And if it's so cold why the actors should wear unbuttoned clothes and so freaky thin? They are "hot" or (in fact) cold?!? And also why they used their normal clothes in bed? They do not have pyjamas or other night clothes?

Honestly the Jason thing isn't the fact that he's "polite," per se, its the fact that Americans are much more artificially friendly than most other cultures. Lots of men here hold open doors for women they don't even know, and people tend to touch more when conversing, and ask "How are you" even when they're not looking for an answer. I'm in DC after moving from the Southwest, and I notice that people are a lot LESS friendly here, but they're still more friendly with strangers than people were when I lived overseas. Of course, I'm not that familiar with Korea outside of K drama, but what I'm gathering is that Jason is more warm in general (ie, to people he doesn't particularly care about) than the other students, which IS an "American" trait. I think its very sweet that Jason walked up the steps to explain himself, though I wouldn't attribute that choice to a particular culture, but rather to him just being awesome.

I need to stop following this show, because I can't take it that Sam Dong is TOTALLY the second lead, and doomed. It will destroy me.

The only clear leading to a couple in the end is the adorable PS & Jason tandem. It’s possible that Hyemi might not end up with either JG or SD but rather an open – hanging courtship kinda stuff.
– With who knows what happens next as they grow.

2. SD – follow his dad’s footsteps. Or else the viewers will kill her/him. :)

3. JG – his father will accept him as he’d like him to be. Eventually. Makes him more fulfilled along with his career’s success. On Hyemi, happy that she is where he’d like her to be…might not be in couple with her at the end of the drama, yet hopeful.

There really was no good way to get IU out of the fat suit in a timely manner and keep the Milky Couple plotline surging forward with the rest of the plot, but that doesn't make me any less depressed that she had to change herself in the first place. I am glad Jason was given the (albeit flimsy) excuse of wanting to help her debut, but now his destined fall-in-love-with-Pil-sook plotline seems a little tainted--like, he saw her as a friend when she was overweight, but now that she's HOT AND SKINNY, well...

So yeah, I wish they'd come up with a more inventive way to handle that, something we haven't seen before.

Overall, though? I'm excited at this new turn of events, which is amazing given I usually find time-skips annoying and unnecessary. In this case, though, it fits with the pace of the drama and I'm really getting into it!

I would rather Pil Sook keep the fat suit, and see a makeover montage instead of a weight loss plot.

It seemed not only did Pil Sook have to be overweight, but also wear the most unflattering clothes possible.

The problem I have with Samdong is that he's pinned his dream on earning HyeMi's love. And he's turning all fierce in order to make that happen, even to the point of overstepping his bounds (insofar as he is cockblocking HyeMi & JinGook) and imposing his feelings on HyeMi, who at this point is passively letting Samdong play the role of lovesick puppy/guard dog against JinGook.

Anyhow, in K-dramaland, that's typically 2nd lead behavior, but I dunno how things will unfold in Dream High.

*Personally* I don't like guys who behave like Samdong. I can take care of myself, thank you very much, which is why I like the character JinGook. But I am not HyeMi, so who knows what Dream High has in plan for her. All I can say is, JinGook, time to step up your game. And HyeMi, time to get real. Get over your pride & fear and accept that you care about JinGook. Cause I can't bare JinGook crying anymore... Sniff Sniff.

Also, I still am not sure who Hye-mi will end up with. And if Sam-dong goes deaf I will be SO. PISSED. Anyway, at least we've established that K can be a group rather than a single person.

I love Sam-dong's actor- his voice is husky and gorgeous, and he's just so damn adorable.

Thank you for the recap!

NoOoO, Show, don't hurt Samdong! And Samdong, hurry up and get your ear problem checked. I know if my hearing was coming and going like that AFTER I had a head injury, I would be calling the doctor ASAP.

I knew there will be a transformation and was expecting to cringe, but I thought the show handled the transformation and Jason's involvement in her transformation pretty well. We would all love Pil-sook to succeed and crush Ria without the transformation, but these kids attend Kirin, with the aim to become idol entertainers. If the students want to become singers where talent is very much valued over looks, then they would have attended a real music conservatory instead of this idol-factory of a school.

I still can't believe 200 days went by in this episode (Samdong, go to the doctor's!)! Wouldn't it be summertime now in dramaland? It's the dead of winter right now, how are they going to stop the breath clouds?

The 200 day flash forward works. This is one time in k-dramas where I felt it worked. Most time dramas do the "two years later..." thing - way overused.

Man I think regardless of how they try to spin it, Pil Sook's transformation is problematic at best. I really do hope that Jason admits he liked her better when she was fat because all this simply points towards the idea that EVERYTHING'S BETTER ONCE YOU'RE SKINNY AND PRETTY which, I mean come the fuck on, that isn't reality, and sure as hell won't be everyone's reality.

Aside from that, this show is my crack.

Well, not sure about country, but there are certain cultures that prefer their women fleshier on average. Korean skinny pretty definitely wouldn't be regarded nearly as attractive by African American, Latin American, or hell white Americans as by Koreans who generally seem to prefer their women skin and bones.

My favorite bit in Secret Garden had to be when Ra-im tells Seul that Seul's curves were all sal (flesh) whereas Ra-im's were muscle.

I'm going to admit it, I'm a Milk couple fanatic and this episode totally solidified it for me. And while the whole getting skinny scene bothers me and the teacher's Thin=Pretty statement is totally falsehood (rage lady feel my rage) I do think Jason using her crush to get her down to what Korea see as debut size was heart warming and shows that he cares cause while I would have lived her to debut at her original size...it's kind of like babysteps really.

Also maybe Jason is from the South. I know plenty of guys here who'll be total gentlemen about not having anything feelings for you beyond just a friend.

Except Jason doesn't have a southern accent. I don't think there's any point to trying to figure out where in America Jason is supposed to be from. I don't think the Show thought it through that much. I think the Show's idea is that guys relate to girls more casually in the US than in Korea. Stereotype, however founded or unfounded.

What did I miss? 0 , o" How come Jason automatically gets picked for group K when he didn't perform at the top students' showcase? Wow, is he THAT good?

This show is starting to pick up how I like it to be, and JG got me welling up tears for him when SD's mom picked food into his bowl, I almost cried for him but couldn't for some reason. He didn't act pitiful enough for me; I suppose.

I am totally drawn into WooU's roles in this show. I keep believing more and more Jason is manifested off Nichkhun, Wooyoung's alter ego. It's fun to see Nichkhun do a cameo in this show, maybe the rest of 2PM will also make an appearance.

LOVE THIS THEORY. And i love you Samdong :)

EVERYTHING starts with Jingook but EVERYTHING ends with Samdong.

The girl met Jingook first.
The girl met Samdong later but she particularly went and looked for him (Forget fate. This ain’t SG. This is about chasing after your dream)

Jingook made the girl to gave the pendent back which is swoon-worthy grand gesture which made the girl honest and independent (roll eye).
Unfortunately this incident led to someone dropped the flower pot on the girl’s head which ended up Samdong saved the day.

Jingook promised the girl to stand together on their first stage (yawn)
Samdong sang a beautiful duet with the girl on their first stage

Jingook performed the opening song.
Samdong sang the closing song.

Jingook practiced the dance with the girl.
Samdong danced with the girl in front of the whole shoool.

The girl falls for Jingook first.
But at the end….?

SamMi shippers!! Hang in there. This is just the beginning.

i love how Hyemi is a rather apathetic character. of course, suzy could use some more facial expressions, but the idea of this character is one who doesnt care (or didn't) about others, thinking she's above everyone - very much like the cold apathetic male lead we see in kdrama. recently she is starting to express her emotions more, but she's still that apathetic girl. She cares more about people now, but she's essentially still what "whatever" girl, which I love. it's nice to have a teenage girl who doesn't act like shes on steroid the whole time ^_^
