Secret Garden: Episode 18

I’m glad this show comes with its own shrink. It should be a new requirement in all k-dramas. I mean, if you’re going to start making such sharp turns, it’s only fair that you provide your own medical care for those of us who suffer from the whiplash. I’d like to dedicate this recap to my 21-year old self: If anyone comes by insisting that you loved this drama in the future, run. Run away.
EPISODE 18 RECAP
Joo-won drives off into the Storm of Magical Soul Swapping, breaking my heart into a million little pieces.
Oska paces back and forth at home, the box of coveted goodies giving him enough pause to think that something’s up. He gets a strange anxious feeling he can’t shake off, and when Joo-won doesn’t pick up his phone, it finally dawns on him that he might just be that crazy…
Meanwhile Jong-soo is yelling at the hospital attendants for letting a coma patient disappear. Yeah, it’s not the soundest of plot points, is it? Oska runs in, yelling at them to check the CCTV, but he already knows where Ra-im is. He tells Jong-soo that Joo-won’s gone too, and he’s pretty sure they’re headed towards the nearest rainfall, to swap bodies.
He’s called the cops on the way over, and they report that they’ve found them. Oska rushes over as they’re unloaded at the nearest hospital, and has them transported to the original hospital in Seoul. What’s with all the trucking back and forth of coma patients? Anyway, they’re both unconscious, and Oska calls Ji-hyun to do what she can.
Each family waits by their bedsides, Joo-won’s mother in hysterics and Oska and Jong-soo keeping watch, waiting for any indication of a swap. Finally, Joo-won wakes up, and Oska stands over him, calling his name.
But it isn’t Joo-won; it’s Ra-Him, waking up in Joo-won’s body. When Oska keeps calling her “Joo-won,” she touches her face and realizes that she’s been swapped. Shaking, she asks what happened, and if it rained in Seoul.
Crying, Oska says, “What about my little brother?” Oof. Heartbreaking.
He tells her that it didn’t rain; Joo-won took her into the rain on purpose, to switch their bodies. She cries, “No, no it can’t be. It can’t be. It can’t be!”
She cries uncontrollably, just as Mom and Ji-hyun run in. She cries, “Where is Kim Joo-won? Where is he?” as Mom and Ji-hyun try to make sense of what’s going on, and Oska cries.
She gets up and runs into Joo-wonda’s room, where Jong-soo jumps up, asking who she is. He realizes that it’s Ra-Him, and hugs her. Ra-Him cries, saying that Joo-won swapped them, ready to die to save her. She looks at her body lying there, and cries for Joo-won, not knowing what to do.
Mom chases her in there, freaking out about her precious son being hugged by riffraff, and orders her henchmen (since when does she have henchmen?) to take Ra-Him away. Jong-soo tries to stop her, shouting that this isn’t Kim Joo-won, but Ra-Him calls her “Mom” and says that she’ll go. She tells Jong-soo that she can handle it, and leaves with Joo-won’s mom.
Back at Joo-won’s house, Ra-Him gets a clean bill of health from the family doctor, and she manages to send Mom away, but not without a dig at “that girl,” of course. She parks a whole army of henchmen at Joo-won’s door, ordering them to keep him away from the hospital, knowing that he’s bound to try and go back to see Ra-im.
Inside, Ra-Him gets up to rush back to the hospital, but Oska stops her. She cries, “I have to go to him. He’s waiting for me.” Oska: “I get that your damn love is grand and all that, but you have to wait.” Ha. It’s both funny and heartbreaking, because he knows it’s not her fault, and yet he’s so frustrated with Joo-won, and still grieving over his crazy actions, driven by such a grandiose love. Because to him, it just means he’s lost his little brother.
He asks her to wait a day, so that Mom doesn’t freak out, and she apologizes that she didn’t think of it that way. Oska goes back to the hospital, and stands by Joo-wonda’s bedside.
Oska: You crazy. How could you? How, how could you do such a thing, you crazy fool? Is this woman the only thing that matters to you? Is your family nothing? You throw a pair of shoes at me…is that it? It’s going to rain eventually. So what am I supposed to do, lock up Ra-im every time it rains? Is that what you want? I can’t. I don’t care how much you hate me. I can’t protect your love. Even if you cry and shout and go crazy, I’m going to live seeing my little brother that way!
This kills me. It was the most heartbreaking part of the last episode for me as well, when Joo-won spent the night with his hyung, knowing what he was about to do. Their relationship is the most heart-rending for me because it keeps Joo-won’s grand mythic gesture tethered to reality and the tragic consequences of his actions.
Despite Oska’s warnings, Ra-Him heads out anyway, unable to leave Joo-wonda alone. She handily beats the guards who try to stop her, but then gets stopped by the housekeeper who brings her the mail. In the stack is the letter that Joo-won wrote.
With the Magic Veil of Un-switchiness, Ra-im sits in Joo-won’s car, and cries as she reads the letter:
Joo-won: Now I think that this magic spell we’re under is a gift from the gods. So, just like a person who’s received a surprise gift, smile with happiness. If you laugh with your heart, I’ll hear it. Because I’m a much more powerful person than you think. Shave my face nicely, and dress me in the clothes that I like. If we could be together even in that way… then that’s enough — let’s think of it as being together. That’s enough for us to consider ourselves as happy as other lovers.
She holds the letter to her heart as she cries. The veil comes back as Ra-Him drives back to the hospital.
She runs in to find Jong-soo still sitting there, outside Joo-wonda’s room. She asks why he’s still here, and he answers that Joo-won might be scared all alone, and that if someone were outside waiting for him, he might return. Aw, is everybody trying to break my heart all at once?
Ra-Him’s eyes fill with tears at the gesture, and she bows before going inside. The veil returns, as Ra-im comes into the room.
She cries as she tells Joo-won that it must be their fate, that one of them has to disappear into bubbles. She says that she’ll be the one to do it. (What, are we really going to do this, Show? If we keep going back and forth on the See-Saw of Love Sacrifice, I’m getting the hell off this ride.)
She says that as soon as the Little Mermaid fell in love with the prince, her fate was sealed. But he’s supposed to be the Little Mermaid, remember? Now all of a sudden, everyone’s clamoring to be the friggin’ mermaid.
She says that she’s going to make everything right again when it rains, and begs him to stay in his rightful place once they switch.
At home Oska drinks as he thinks back to how strange Joo-won was the other night, laughing at his stories. He realizes now that it was his last goodbye. Seul sits with him, trying to help, but confused since Oska isn’t really explaining things to her so that she’ll understand.
He says that he’s always lost to Joo-won because he was the hyung and the adult. But he wonders how much of a hyung and an adult you have to be, to die in someone’s place.
As Ra-Him sleeps holding Joo-wonda’s hand, her father appears in magical dreamland and watches them together with a heavy heart. And then, through some magical maneuvering on his part, Ra-im and Joo-won start to hear each other in their dreams, as they imagine meeting each other in a field, at a lavish table set for two.
In dreamworld, they sit across from each other and smile, and then they wait for the one who invited them…Ra-im’s father. He shows up and holds up a new bottle of flower liquor, saying that this wine is the beginning and the end of the magic.
As he pours a glass for each of them, he tells Joo-won to forget him now, and his promise, since he’s fulfilled it beyond the call of duty. He tells Ra-im to be loved, and that as much as she has kept her head bowed, to now live the rest of her days being loved. He tells them that the magic is over now, and to consider it like a handshake between people who’ve just met; the real magic begins now. Blech. Sorry, I choked on the cheese.
Listen Show, this benevolent magic from daddy dearest is really taking all the air out of my tires. I thought it was fine when his choice to do the spell was driven by selfish motivations to save his daughter, but now, if his intention was to put everything back anyway, it just drips of plot contrivance. Why couldn’t he have stayed a flawed, selfish father with some hoodoo up his sleeve? What’s wrong with that?
Daddy disappears, and as Joo-won and Ra-im drink the magic wine, it starts to rain rose petals, just like in Ah-young’s dream.
And then, just like that, they wake up…in their own bodies. Yep, Just. Like. That. RA&*%^$! Goddamnit. Now I’m pissed off about the last episode and a half. All that angst, and this is the resolution? So lame.
They each wake up to discover that they’re in their own bodies, and as they get out of bed, the camera pulls back to show their floors covered in rose petals. Ra-im wakes up in the hospital the same, relieved to be back, and runs out to find Joo-won.
But Joo-won seems a little more than confused, even by his own face. Oska comes in, thinking that it’s still Ra-im in there, and Joo-won calls him hyung and asks why they both look like this. He asks where this is, and why he’s not at the hospital…and if his friends made it out of the fire okay…
Oska looks at him in shock, as he realizes that Joo-won came back all right, but as his 21-year old self, right after his big accident.
WHAT. THE. FUCK. Dude, somebody send Daddy back to Hogwarts. Your magic is all screwy!
Oska asks Ji-hyun to meet with Joo-won, and she comes back to report that Joo-won is okay, but is probably suffering from shock. He’s regained his memories from the accident, but in exchange has lost all his memories since. He also can’t remember the fireman who rescued him.
She says that he’s taking it all pretty well, and is happy to find out that he’s the president of LOEL (over his hyung, neener) and he’s excited to wake up an adult. Haha. Despite the rampant whatthefuckery of bringing in the mother of all exasperating tropes (that would be AMNESIA), it is kind of hilarious to meet the 21-year old Joo-won. He praises his own taste as he looks around his house, and Oska confirms that Joo-won is now 34, while he’s 36. Joo-won: “You look it. But me…” Ha.
He catches up with the basics, and also fills us in on his past with Ji-hyun, as he says that she dumped him three months ago. She corrects him: that would be thirteen years and three months ago. He’s surprised that they’re still friends, but she says it’s because she’s so good-natured. Heh.
Meanwhile, Ra-im rushes over, and starts crying at the sight of Joo-won back in his own body. She rushes over and hugs him, calling him a jerk for pulling that stunt, and that she was scared she’d never see him again.
Joo-won just stares at her, wondering who she is. He has a vague memory of seeing her at the hospital, and Oska thinks that maybe his memory is coming back after all. Ra-im looks at him in shock, and Oska tells her that he’ll explain, but that Joo-won is 21 right now.
He asks who Gil Ra-im is, asking if it’s someone he knows. It was the first thought he had when he woke up, but he doesn’t know why. Ra-im starts to cry, and he looks curiously at her, “Are you…Gil Ra-im? You?”
She nods and Oska and Ji-hyun leave, thinking that maybe Ra-im will be the best trigger for his memory. He looks her up and down, asking her how old she is, and what she does for a living, shocked that he knew a stuntwoman, of all things. He asks what they were to each other.
Ra-im: “You loved me. And I loved you.” Joo-won reels at that, not believing it for a second. He wonders if there’s perhaps another Gil Ra-im. She says there probably is, but she’s the one that Kim Joo-won loved.
He accepts it for now and says that he’s got to clear some things up, so to leave her number and go. Ra-im: “You were a jerk even when you were young, huh?” Pwahahaha! Hilarity.
He’s like, what the…but she just smiles at him. She tells him to check his cell phone for her number, where he’ll also find pictures of her. Ra-im: “Now, no matter what you do, I like you. Now, no matter what you do, I can forgive you. For the sole reason…that you’re alive.”
He puts on his sparkly tracksuit (Amazing…that’s the thing you pull out of your closet when all of the clothes are new to you?) and goes for a walk. Ra-im appears next to him, walking alongside him like she used to, and he wonders to himself why he’s thinking of her.
Ra-im is back at the hospital, and Ah-young yells at her for giving her the scare of her life, as the girls have a happy reunion. Joo-won shows up and tells Ah-young to send in the man out in the hall. She goes out to find Secretary Kim, who wheels in a cart with a grand lunch by candlelight. Ra-im laughs and so does Secretary Kim, who notes with a smirk that the stuff Joo-won does is exactly the same. They have a good laugh over it and Joo-won gets pissy, asking if they’re friends. Ha.
She does the same thing she did the first time he set a lavish table for her, and puts the candles out. He can’t believe that he ever liked someone like her, and asks the typical Kim-Joo-won questions, like who her father is and what family she’s from. She just tells him that he does know her father, but doesn’t say anything beyond that.
She surprises him by calling out the fact that he can’t stop thinking about her, and that it’s the reason why he’s here. Ra-im: “Do you want to know why? Because you love me.” She tells him that he followed her around like crazy and that he’ll be back tomorrow, so she gives him an excuse to come. She tells him that eventually he’ll tell her that she’s strange and curious to him, and he just covers his ears and walks out, not wanting to hear it. Heh. I sort of like the idea of her dating the 21-year old version of Joo-won. Can he just stay this way, and not get his memory back?
I love the way she looks at him, like you’ll see just how crazy in love with me you’re going to be, kid.
Ra-im returns to the action school where she’s greeted with confetti and party hats. Jong-soo hugs her, which is right when Joo-won walks in, telling them to separate. Joo-won: “Were you a two-timer? Were you two-timing me?” Heh. He pompously tells everyone to leave the room, and Ra-im tells the guys she’ll explain later, and takes him upstairs. He looks at them agape, “Do I know you guys too?”
She can tell that his memory hasn’t returned, but when she makes a move to kick him in the shin, he involuntarily moves back in step. He looks at her accusingly, asking why his leg just did that: did she used to hit him? She looks up at him slyly, not denying it. Ra-im: “Your body remembers me.” Rawr.
She calls him Kim Ddol-choo, her nickname for him (basically short for Loser Tracksuit), and he realizes that she’s making fun of his outfit. He laughs, saying that this is no ordinary tracksuit…and he unzips it and shows her the label. HA.
Ra-im swoops in for a hug, thanking him for coming by like this. She sighs, “I guess I’m going to end up loving the 21-year old you too.” He’s taken aback at first, but then can’t help himself, and totally melts into her hug. OMG, 34-year old Joo-won drove me batty, but I frickin’ love the 21-year old version. So cute.
He leans his head in and puts his hands around her, saying sweetly, “Will you?” I love how awkward he is.
Ra-im then goes to see Joo-won’s mother, and stands up to her for the first time. She tells her that they won’t break up, for whatever reason, because they’ve been to death’s door and back, and now every second of their lives is precious. She refuses to back down, and tells Mother matter-of-factly that she isn’t scared of her anymore.
And then, with a big breath, she blurts out, “Please give me your son! I’ll take responsibility for him and make him happy.” Pwahaha. Love it. What a great reversal for her to ask for Joo-won’s hand.
Joo-won sends Secretary Kim over to Ra-im’s to fetch her over to his house (which they also laugh at). She walks in and he tells her to move into the house (whoa, movin’ fast there, little buddy) so that he can figure out why he liked her so much.
She just laughs, telling him that it’s not the first time he’s said those words. She tells him that he’s done a lot to try and convince her, to move in, to share a bed, to shower together…
He perks up at that, smiling that they must be closer than he thought. He moves closer to her, “So, were we close enough to kiss? Like this…?”
He gets up and leans over her, going in for the kill.
COMMENTS
Hahaha. It’s kinda wrong if you think about it, but I totally want 21-year old Joo-won to go for it! He’s so much more adorable and less weighed down by darkness than his older self. I kind of want them to stay this way, and for him to never get his memory back. Would that be so bad?
At least Ra-im finally stood up to Mom, though it sure did take her long enough. I just can’t believe that of ALL the possible mystical and life-threatening barriers that they get past, she is the one that’s still standing. I mean, what? I find it odd that we still have two episodes left, but she’s really the only obstacle left, and she’s just harping on the same old stuff. Yawn.
I really hated the resolution to the life-sacrificing-body-swapping mess of a plot, which sucked all the dramatic weight out of that storyline. And I yelled obscenities when the amnesia followed suit, like Show was trying to kill me or something. But then the result of the amnesia was surprisingly light and funny and cute, so that was really this episode’s saving grace. I definitely have a bit of emotional whiplash from the melodrama-turned-makjang-turned-comedy, but at this point I’m not really that surprised. This show jerks me around so much it’s sadistic.
Just when I thought that the drama had finally validated itself and found a reason for the body swap, AND the mystical veil (I know!), it totally did a 180 and shot itself in the proverbial foot. That rose-petal magic dreamland hoodoo crap made me wanna barf all over the pure white snow. But lo and behold, barely post-pubescent Joo-won appeared out of nowhere and saved me from driving a spork through my heart.

I think/hope/pray in the future, writers should finish their scripts, edit, cast, film, edit, then start airing the episodes.
So many dramas start out with great potential then become makjang crap by the end due to excessively tight shooting schedules and concerns over ratings.
SG started out as this whimsical fantasy slice of life cinderella story, where everyone was sort of damaged but in a human way. Now it's this weeping, tries-to-be-epic-but-is-really-not mess. It's not just that the plot had gotten bad, it's that the tone of the entire story has changed from rather quiet one to loud, obnoxious, beat us over the head insanity.
The problem is that writers don't plot out their stories in their entirety before airing. KES had a plot bunny but she didn't have a resolution. She spent a lot of time setting up the characters before the switch, but she didn't give the same consideration to establishing stakes for them as well as their sacrifices to obtain a resolution, hence the deus ex machina rose pedal scene.
Makjang is always the easy way out-like instant drama and tension. The problem is, this kind of conflict almost always seems contrived, and because it's so unbelievable, it takes an equally unbelievable solution. Lazy, lazy storytelling

so agree with you...and the actors/actresses seems not in good condition by the end of the dramas.
We can see Hyun bin with his swollen eyes ( maybe because he cried too much and not get enough sleep). I've read his interview somewhere and hyun bin said he hasn't sleep for 4 days last week, and that 4 hours sleep is privilege for him....that's very unhealthy for them.

So, true what you say about scriptwriters/drama productions, who should actually finishing all the components of a whole story (you know, like having a resolution/ending to it), before filming, as well as edit, edit, edit!
And, I think it would not be to their disadvantage to have a medical consultant at hand who can provide realistic suggestions and resolutions to medical issues . . . instead of having a supposedly brain-damaged patient being brought to life from her formally vegetative state.
It frustrates me to no end when a drama starts off very well, but gradually loses its style and grip on conventional reality (e.g. miraculously taking a coma patient out of a hospital unnoticed . . .right, like that would happen).

but however, i feel as if you (and jb) have been missing some pretty important details from time to time. don't get me wrong, i'm really grateful for you guys spending time quickly recapping so many dramas for us readers, but i'm getting a little frustrated with the skimming of the recaps. ie: raim's dad said during the dream sequence for Joo Won to forget about his promise with him, which explains why joowon's memory was erased--not raim's dad's magic being all screwy for no reason at all. makes sense, not really a wtf moment.

SG used to be the drama that I thought I'd recommend to everyone once I'd finished it - now, however, as much as I enjoy it (I got addicted in episode 3 and nothing could stop me), I find myself desperately trying to rationalize the plot.
For example, Joo Won lost his memory because he once made a promise to Ra Im's dad that he would take care of Ra Im (hence RI's face seems familiar to the 21-year-old JW), but now he has been released of that promise. And the reason he's been released from that promise is because he's already gone above and beyond, by showing his dedication to RI.
While this might actually turn out to be the case, I DO wish that it weren't all crammed into the last four episodes. I suspect that once SG finishes airing, I'll remember it on my own terms, aka I have my own spin on things:
In my version, Ra-Him drags the unconscious Joo-Wanda to Jeju Island and finds the secret garden, hoping to find the weird restaurant and the flower wine. As she prays for her father to help her, we see her father arguing with the gods, saying that they can't RI's body die ... because it isn't RI's soul in there! The [drama] gods agree, and let RI wake up, just as it starts to rain. And then of course when it rains, the "secret garden" becomes visible again.
Peerfect. Now I just need to find KES, and then borrow Hermione's Time-Turner (or will the all-magical flower wine work as well?) ...

so far this drama doesnt disappoint me , all the flaws i just take it as kdrama land flaws hehehe , it so sweet he is 21 again , i just made me think when your younger your more agressive more vibrant it being young and free

I love that Ra-im now always show her smiles everytime she sees Joo-won.
She always stare or glare or yell when she saw Joo-won in the first half episodes.

Kdramas and Dramabeans have become like crack to me...seriously. I'm African-American and can't speak an ounce of Korean but I'm honestly thinking about buying Rosetta Stone so that I can stop waiting for the subbed versions and watch my dramas as soon as they're available...this cannot be healthy...can it??
I came across this drama purely by accident and now I'm hooked...like really. I may need therapy when the final episode airs so that I can find a way to properly cope (thank goodness for My Princess!).

Hey, I'm biracial (African-American+Mexican-American) and don't know any Korean either, but I LOVE these dramas! I would also love to learn the language. If you haven't seen My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, check it out. It will be good for when SG is over and between eps of My Princess, which I also love.

I started watching K-drama with 'saranghe' as the only Korean word I know. I cannot boast of knowing that much more but am not a confirmed k-drama addict. My husband asks me from time to itme if i 'have gone Korean'.
And like you, I have started on 'My Princess'. I am a sucker for rom-coms with a bit of drama.

GOD I LOVE THIS DRAMA. even though there's a lot of messy spots, i think it's great for even being able to draw so many emotions out of an audience. FREAKIN EXTREME EMOTIONAL ROLLERCOASTER.
and i'm actually thankful that they finished all the depressing stuff (PRAYING) b/c now we can get to the supporting characters' drama. i mean, there's still oska's rival to bring back, tae ssun's feelings to fess, seul's love for oska to be resolved, joo won's memory to come back, and, o...i don't know, maybe a wedding (LET'S HOPE FOR THREE) to come. LOTS of potential.
so as much as i hated some of the editing in ep 18, it was honestly one of my favorite episodes for making me go through a whiplash. JUST what i needed to wake me up before i went to my next class.

SG has taken me on an adventure ride. I was really disappointed at how the accident was executed, that became a whole mess for the past two episodes, none-the-less I still enjoyed watching it and cried my eyes dry at hyun bin's talent. I love how JW's amnesia went back to his 21 yr old self so the show revisited the whimsical part like in the beginning.
Ep. 17 was definitely one of the climax of the show because it was the one everyone was anticipating for and it died down afterward, i'm not feeling that anticipation for the ending, so hopefully the writers got something up their sleeves!

So my mom's like watching Mackerel Run, one of Lee Minho's pre-BOF dramas, for the 3rd time within the past year (she has the drama taste of a teen) and who did I see but Director Park!!! Recognized the voice when I was walking by the tv.
So sad that Secret Garden has got everything going for it except a solid story. The fantasy aspect is all hole-y like swiss cheese and reeks of contrivance. I can see why the story is a bit messed up at this point because everyone is pressed for time and with all the speculations of what will happen, it looks like the writer is trying too hard to be fresh and unexpected to keep the audience captivated. I am delighted by how unpredictable it is, but, aside from the incredible acting, I am also disappointed by the recent execution of these unpredictable moments.
Despite feeling a bit tricked by all the melodrama in Episode 17 (totally ruins the emotional impact for rewatching), I'm glad this episode did a complete 180 and became happier and provided so many cute moments. As much I love this series, I don't think I would finish it if episodes 18, 19, and 20 were all angst too. But now we leave episode 18, going "now what can they possibly do for the next 2 hours?? Will they show JW's sister again? It's weird that she hasn't reappeared for like 5 episodes now just when it seems like she and Jong-soo will get their own moments.
I have to admit that I ate that amnesia trope with a spoon! I know it is like the #1 most hated makjang-soap-opera-romance trope out there, but I have a humongous soft spot for it when it doesn't get too heavy. Was expecting BOF, Redux and got all these awesome scenes instead. (though a part of me is puzzled and annoyed how nonchalant everyone seems to be about JW thinking he's 21, especially JW who has gone from 21 to 34 overnight. I'm 24 now and if I woke up 37 tomorrow, I would be having a serious crisis! I guess finding out that you're living an awesome life at 34 softens the blow).
I also love the Oska-JW moments. My heart also broke in episode 17 with Joo-won saying he knew that Oska always lost to him on purpose. And really, JW's mom should just give JW to RI, else he'd be going after guys like Oska-oppa (incest!) and Jong-soo.
I know it is futile to expect logic, but Ra-Im sure got admitted out of the hospital fast. I was hoping for some hospital scenes of Joo-won feeding her soup and fluffing her pillow.

I think this drama gain so much attention and the post that javabeans put about the writer complaining on twitter about all the speculation come to my mind. She is trying to be unpredictable, and she does, but is sacrificing things.
For me the plot isn’t that unexpected until the amnesia. We all know that something had to happen to Ra-im since episodes 5-6. Is just that everything happened so fast ads so makjan? I don’t know how to put it. The way she resolves the switch, I also know that Ra-im dad had to be involved, but again it was so premature and cheesy. She could do better. Until we arrived to the amnesia, that’s out the line. The only thing that keep it a little into the line is the thing that Ra-im dad said (that Joo-won will forgot him, ergo, he forgot the traumatic part of the accident) but is a little bit fragile. I only forgive that because 21 year old Joo-won. Im a afraid for the to next episodes, because in pursuit of freshness, this can be more wacky and hit the ground and I still love this, but the two last episodes can ruin it for me.

Korean actors really put up w/crap when filming. Conditions that Hollywood light-weights would walk-out over. Shooting all those scenes in the snow and cold wearing cotton pj's and flip-flops? You can even see their breath during some indoor shots. & just how many rain scenes has this drama had? Crazy.

I do wonder abt how often I see their breath INDOORS. So are some of the rooms not in houses, but on sets in warehouses without heating?? The only time I can remember seeing my own breath indoors is when I was standing 20 feet away from a large heavily used entrance/exit so the door was never shut for more than a minute. Otherwise, no matter how unheated a building was, I don't see my own breath. And I live in northeastern US.
and having Ha Ji Won walking in that hospital gown. I feel like they're always putting her in the cold. She's gets pelted by rain 2 times more than Hyun-bin. She waited in the cold outside JW's christmas party and then arrived wearing the a short dress instead of the long gowns that everyone had. and after all that, hyun-bin gets all the juicy parts in the drama! At least she got some rest playing a coma patient.

I totally read past all the 200++ comments here just to give my 2cents on Episode 18..
First thing that came to mind when Joo Won said he remembers Gil Ra Im vaguely in the hospital, I think it was from his accident.. And I think he remembers only the NAME and not the looks since it was from 13 years ago.. So I think the reason why he remember Ra Im is because before her dad passed away after saving Joo Won, the dad mentioned RaIm to JW and thus he would feel responsible for her..
The fact that in the beginning JW tried to forget about the incident, means that it was just FATE that brought him and Ra Im to meet... but now that he remembers the accident and Ra Im's name, he now will find purpose to really take care of her..
I know the drama is kinda over the top between reality and fantasy, but I Really LOVE it.. I love dramas that make me think.. lol.

Like most of the comments here, I'm still suffering from that whiplash but... is it wrong that I still adore this drama?
I cried my eyes out for the first half and giggled like a little school girl for the other. Oska broke my heart and has officially earned my love. I'm also loving 21 JW- that scene at action school was too cute.
I'm gonna reserve my judgement till the final episodes. I'm hoping that the writers can take all thats happened in eps 17 & 18 and bring it back home.
It might just be me but, does anyone squeal at the though of Oska and Sun together? I really want them to be even though I know my wish will never come true</3

Honestly, they are seriously killing me with the dramatics! I hope they don't set themselves up so far that the last two episodes doesn't deliver. I really want to like Ha Ji Won in this but she's a bit stiff. Not really feeling the chemistry between them. Like a hit and miss. And what's up with acting so shy about a kiss when you've kissed him times before? Please drop the tired 'am so fragile and innocent' act, when you've just moments before kicked security butt. You're a rough and tough stuntwoman for crying put loud. I don't know but its kinds lame now that its coming to the end.
I really want the show to surprise me, but I've found that's its been a bit predictable at times. Why make it such a big deal that her dad died for him if Joo Won will forget him like that. This drama us going around in circles. Smt

Firstly, a girl being able to kick butts doesn't mean that she is also sexually aggressive. Ra-Im's character is set up to be someone who is somewhat shy in the first place.
Secondly, I don't know why you say Ra-Im is acting "fragile and innocent". Ever since she recovered from her coma (second half of this episode), Ra-Im has been openly showing her affections for JW. She declared she love him and hugs him. I don't think she is shy about the kiss at the end, she is just surprised that JW will suddenly come on to her like that.
Thirdly, personally feel that the chemistry between HJW and HB is one of the best I've seen in a kdrama. It's what kept me root for them even when JW was being a bastard and Ra-Im was being helpless and crying.
Fourthly, I'll hardly call HJW's acting stiff. She did a great job acting as both Ra-Im and Joo-wanda and is, by turns, funny, sexy, pensive, serious and shy. I don't know who HJW is before this drama but I totally adore her now. She is a great actress.

I don't know... even when they kissed.... I didn't feel anything special or make me go aww....

I see that editing was rushed and dark circles around actors eyes made me nervous. Hyunbin said that he didn't sleep for 4 days and the staffs' situations are worse. Actors are starting to get part-scripts and writing is rushed like crazy now. Literally, everything is in mess. Even if this is pretty normal thing for K-dramas after half of episodes are aired, I'm scared how last two episodes wil turn out because I loveeee secret garden. K-dramas need to stop doing "live" filming and editing. I heard that staffs and actors fall asleep in the middle of acting!!! And how about editors? They are out of their mind already. The Joowon's Secretary(the actor) wrote on the secret garden's official hompage that it is like testing limits of human being. Yes, I admit that the weather change, vibe and atmosphere flowing same with the real life is pretty cool at first, but it really takes away the chance to make single well-made drama. I saw so many korean dramas with 4 episodes pre-recorded being sooo good and things turn out like rushed homework after like 6 episodes. Ahh please pre-record at lease half of episodes before you start to air!!!

Nonetheless, Hyunbin is amazing actor. I was surprised again to see how he turned from Raim to 21 yr old Joowon. His eyes, voice, and atmosphere totally changed from 34 yr old Joowon. His acting style is really detailed.

Accident, coma, lotsa of tears, body swap, memory loss... wah what a rollar coaster ride within the 2 eps.
21 yr old Joo won love his sparkly tracksuits as much as 34 yr old Joo woo. Haha
But I like that snow scene. It showed that no matter which age Joo Woo is in, he will be attracted to Ra-im. (But poor ha ji won, the cold she must have felt in that cotton thin hospital gown. Blurrr)

sigh, i have a weird relationship with you, show. i liked you at first, but grew annoyed as you progressed, but now i feel like i can love you again... but why now? when we only have 2 episodes left, why didn't you pull this one out before so i don't have to keep rolling my eyeballs at you, show?
ok, i think the 21y.o. Joowon (a.k.a the most adorable thing ever) made up for most of the wtf-ckery that was in this episode.

I saved myself and skipped episode 17 (except the last part). I think the petals falling bit has a parallel to the petals falling *before* the magic started. So I think they were going for that.
And I guess Daddy was trying to save her ability to love and asked Joo Won to take care of her. There still is that card left in the deck.
I don't know--I have a lot of phobia of melodrama, so I spare myself by skipping it.
If you skipped out on the melodrama and hit the fast forward the connecting to the 21 year old self isn't half so bad.

I don't know...it feels like the the first time that Joo-won kept seeing Ra-im everywhere too was after he woke up with this amnesia ,As if that was after that accident too...she's the only one he remembers and wants desperately to know why and maybe Ra-im kept acting that way to ensure that he gets his memory back..coz now atleast he's over his fears of claustrophobia after that dream of body-switcheroo magic mumbo-jumbo whatever ...another day they'll start again at this game like now he's 21 and again has the memory of her till the day he finally remembers everything...and that's how much Ra-im loves him to start each day with him as a stranger and then end it as his one and only true love... so truly,every thing from the beginning was like a game (a la 50 dates)-no magic,no Dumbledad and no coma...coz what was the bloody point of the whole body switch if dad was able to get her out of her coma anywho just by appearing in a dream..her life was never in danger after all ...
Sigh**...I know..it makes no sense at all but so does this show's last few episodes plot-wise..SHOW,I loved you so much but you've really driven me crazy with the anticipation of something great that was not to be... why do they always have to ruin the endings for us with zero logic and total derailing from the build-up of the past two months... ahh agree,the cute is still there and the sizzle too -i mean that's why I'm still watching..but i don't know.. sigh**

Just have to comment again cause I finally watched the entire episode. Wow - Hyun Bin definitely has a lot of parts here - playing JW as JW and Ra-Him (is that right?) and then his 21 yr old JW. I was glad to see the veil so I could see more of HJW's acting since her character was in a coma. I don't know how HB can function was virtually no sleep in 4 days. Frankly, I'm up almost 24 hrs a day with the baby & the tot and I am seriously going crazy. Maybe it helps to have caffeine, I haven't... but my body is aching if I can't get any sleep cause I'm so tired. I imagine the actors & staff have had caffeine, but that's just so tough on them.
I love how HJW reacts to 21 yr JW. Love love love... I think the chemistry is really evident here. I think it makes JW so much more adorable. The rose petal thing - oh boy... I forgive the writer cause of the stress and cause the character played them well.
I too was wondering about the actors getting cold - with walking around outside in just a track suit or just pj or whatever - throughout the entire series. I hope they have those heat warming devices under their clothes.

For some reason, everytime I see the "pwahaha" laugh,
JW's face pops up in my head and hear his laugh. This is how addicted I am to this character (or should I say to Binnie?)!
I really love Oska in this episode. I connected more with him and felt what he was feeling.

I really feel bad for these actors and the work they put into the filming just to air on time. But the past three episodes were so cramped with information and so rushed. The storyline would have played out for the next 3 episodes, sadly it ends at 20 :( EXTEND IT TO 25!! HAHAHAA More Hyun Bin!

OMG! so it's a fact. i'm a filipina and i've migrated here in australia. you're shows are like PG both here in Oz and in the Philippines. Primetime in OZ is until 10:30. At 9pm, matured shows (and that's with sex scenes!) are shown as kids are expected to be asleep.
i'm already asleep at 10 pm! so i suppose koreans sleep only like 5-6 hours a day? wow!

Just to clarify things, there are also dramas that air/ed at daytime/late afternoon, such as Temptation of Wife and It's Okay Daddy's Girl. However, shows at these time slots are more closely monitored than late night dramas because most minors are still awake at these times. (Hence the warning IODG got for its alleged makjang contents.)

It's Okay Daddy airs at 9pm. But yes, there are daily dramas and morning dramas that don't air at night.

Editing flaws, cliche, cheesiness, angst, not realistic errr... what else? These are common in Kdramaland ~ most audience are pretty aware of these stuffs :p
But still, Secret Garden stands out. Unforgettable. I love everything about it. At first I was hesistant coz I'm not really a fan of any of the cast, but I was curious on the plot (body switch, magic, fantasy, secrets - oh boy, the writer can get away with these kind of stuff).
They did get away with it ~ lol, I enjoyed this drama immensely, and I discovered HJW, and love HB more. They're both impressive in their acting. I love their chemistry.
This is the episode where I can already say that whatever cliche ending the writer will throw at us, I will gladly accept... 18 out of 20 good episodes is A-OK for me. 2 more good episodes is a bonus, so bring it on!

This show is INSANE.
And I love it. LOVE IT. I can't help it. 21 year old Joo Won is ALL SORTS OF AWESOME, especially when you watch him fall for her all over again - and I love Ra Im who's so confident in his love for her, she's all like, there's no way you won't fall in love with me again, boy-o.
The first makjang-half was so full of angst, which I partially loved, except they then dropped the angst, which just seriously CONFUSED me...until 21 year old Joo Won appeared, and then I was OKAY with it.
Arg, I can't believe there's only 2 more episodes left (and what was with the Daddy plot...a bit of a let down if you ask me - but hopefully there's a bit more to it. I have some theories...)

have u'll saw the pics of the hospital scene with Jw & RI connected to the heart rate monitor that some crazy fans uploaded, the netizen had observed their heart beat change in their respective cut:
For Ra-im (in ep17): initial heart beat is 69, second time Jw visits her is 63, when Jw lays her head on her stomach is 64, JW holds her hand is still 64. When Jong-soo is there with her is 56, with Oska initial is 54, highest is 56.
For Joo-won (in ep18): initial heart beat is 68, then to 70, when RI lays her head on his stomach,the digits increase to 80, then to 82, then final cut is 83
(i think i should have my small notebook stand by every time i watch sg, so i can prove whether it is true )

dude....when I just thought of crying a bucket of tears when I'm just about to start this episode....I found myself laughing hard...like a crazy fool....smiling like an idiot....wanting for more tension (sexuallly? LOL) towards the end of the this episode
what am I even thinking? am I turning into a creepy 15 year old waaah...
I just have to say....this is the 1st korean drama that made me cry and also another minute after crying laugh like there's no tomorrow....this is also the best and my fav drama plot eva....and I praise the writer and director of this drama...in fact I think that everything and everyone in this drama are great awesome supercalifragilisticexpealidocious????!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I think somehow subconsciously Joo Won doesn't 'want' to remember what happened in the elevator and that overrides any desire to regain his memories afterwards. Or maybe he was a little crazy when he was 21, too. =D

I have a theory: Better scripts need writers to come in pairs.
I mean, dream team - hong sisters are definitely talented in their own right (or they have their own fox-writing-bead that they stroke to sleep every night). But I think there's definitely merits to having someone there to prevent you from killing your plot ala gender-confused-mermaid-gets-resurrected-by-roses-but-faces-amnesia style.
Sigh.
It makes you wonder if cross-dressing dad was sane when he was alive right?
I actually thought the plot was going pretty well with Joo Won's self-sacrifice. And I was looking forward to what would be Ra Im's solution to this. I miss the cool suave Ra Im from Episode 1 who knew how to kick fate in the face rather than just stand around and cry. I wanted my heroine to stand up and save wussy Joo Won who's being too a noble idiot (although I'll admit that he's the reason for the empty kleenex box).
But nooooooooooooooooo.... Show doesn't give her a chance.
I still do love the show for this awesome couple. I'll just pretend Episode 18 major plot point was a huge major black hole in my memory and giggle myself silly over 21 year old joo won.

after watching episode 18, i come to understand why the production included that crappy 'body switching'. it is not fun, and i find it ridiculous but since i started watching it, i might as well finish it till the end.

Despite the rampant whatthefuckery of bringing in the mother of all exasperating tropes (that would be AMNESIA), it is kind of hilarious to meet the 21-year old Joo-won.
Is there something wrong with me if this is the kind of writing that appeals to me the most these days? I just love our spork-wielding GF-- she and JB truly are Goddesses of the Recap.

There's no difference between the 21 and 34 Joo Won, except 21 Joo Won makes fast (same) moves.
Waiting for the ending now. Hope the drama is as memorable as Coffee Prince, then it's a good calling-card for Hyunbin to go off for the army and leaves the fans waiting for his comeback; much alike Gong Yoo.
