Secret Garden to live on?

…and on… and on…. SBS’s latest hit Secret Garden might just get an afterlife, although it remains to be seen whether it will be one filled with rose petals and hocus pocus, or a life of being stuck in development netherworld. The production company is currently in talks to debate a couple of options. Among them are: a drama Season 2, a musical, and a movie.

The one with the lowest probability of coming into existence is of course the drama. I will eat my left foot if that actually happens. Because waaay too many factors would have to align for a season 2 (the biggies: writer Kim Eun-sook, and stars Ha Ji-won and Hyun Bin, the latter of which is headed to the army in two months’ time). And even if you could defy space and time to make it happen, what kind of story would be left to tell?

The musical and the movie versions are more likely, though it’s still unclear if they would write entirely new storylines, and why in particular they’re thinking musical, rather than just theater. If what they’re trying to do is cash in on the success of the drama, they should really just do a straight theatrical adaptation of the original, condensing the story into one play.

A representative from the production company stated, “We’re discussing all the offers. We think we’ll come to a decision soon about what version to make. I think there will be many different ways to solve this problem.” Yeah, I wouldn’t call it a problem so much as a cash cow. Secret Garden mania is still going strong, with novel and manhwa versions to come.

Looks like there might be hope after all, for those of you still jonesin’ for your next Secret Garden fix.

Totally not for a Season 2 although I did enjoy Secret Garden. I don't think there's any way to drag the story any further, unless it's a spin-off? Then they can solve the problem about the 2 leads. But still, meh on that idea as well. I would stick to a musical/play.

That is frustrating (T.T)

I agree with you that the second part can not be done because the hero will be in the army for two years

And I do not think that there is room for a new story, Unless 30 Child

Agree. Without Hyun bin as Joo-won .. don't bother.

A huge part of SG (it was fun hating him, and yet laughing my head off at his twisted insights, humor and Ra-im/Joo-won wit/conversations.

That said, if they can anchor the two leads, and condense the same magic into a movie (away with all the redundant back and forth and too much body swapping) .... I will be eagerly waiting the movie version.

Sequel ok if it's a humorous extension of them parenting and married life - imagine their parenting styles would be very different. Or how they worm their way around Grandma Princepessa.

Then again, this alone cannot last past 4 eppies.

NO wish at all to see a main development of Oska + Seul or Secretary Kim + Ah Young, unless in context to the main leads' (like SG #1) story.

I think there's nothing left to say so i'm against a seaso 2 of the drama however a movie with the exact same story would be awesome.
Still, i don't think they'd be able to have the same cast =(

I agree with you.
Secret Garden was such a success because of the unique story and the awesome character portrayals of Ha Ji Won and Hyun Bin.
If they promote another spinoff, Secret Garden will lose its magic; the reason why so many people adored this drama.

just my opinion. :)

I'd be for a spinoff where we follow the cute musician kid to find his happiness. He's really the only loose end.

As for the film or musical options, I'm torn. I think it would work a lot better as a stage play, but I would never get to see it so...

a musical won't kill SG's name, hopefully :D

but i'm a no go for the drama. there's nothing to tell...the movie sequel as well. what is there to talk about in the afterlife anyways? i know it's really cute and everything...but last time's 75 minutes prologue was enough. it really was.

Waking Up Someone New
Don't Touch That, Don't Touch Those

The story pretty much ended in 20 and w/o Hyun Bin and Ha Ji Won, I sort of doubt people will watch.

I would totally watch an Oska/Seul spinoff though where Oska is clueless and dense, and Seul is the fierce bitch that she is.

After rewatching Secret Garden for the Gazillions time I do think it is time to move on, although If I were to chose I would go for the movie. They could show their marital life and what happens after the honeymoon phase and how they overcome the decison they made about getting married, and how after five years they are still a happily married couple with 3 lovely kids. But this will definetly have to happen when HB comes back from the Marines, because without the two maim leads it would not be the same.
I guess this is just my wishfull thinking because I would be a miracle if the two leads would reprise their roles after two years, just look at what happened with Full House, there were talks about a sequel but neither leads wanted to do it again.

Don't kill the magic to fatten some pockets!

This drama was the success it was because of the novelty of the concept (within dramaworld), the dynamic performances of the main leads, and, well, hate to admit it, but maybe a tracksuit or two....a sequel would not be a good idea.

A movie and possibly a play...I like the idea of a movie.

yikes! I love Secret Garden but they should really just leave it alone! Don't ruin a good thing. There really isn't much story to tell for another season (160 hours) even if the story revolved around the other characters (Seul x Oska and Jong-soo x JW's sis).

And if there is a movie or a musical version, it will only be a shadow of itself without Ha Ji Won and Hyun-bin. Those two actors made the flawed story work.

I love Secret Garden, but please…forget Hyun Bin going to the army. What would be the story? And I’m not only talking about a second season, if they make a movie, the story would be the same or it would be another? In either case, it’s not a good idea.

Please SBS, leave it like that! It is good that way. 20 episodes were enough, I’m happy like that. I hate that every time something is successful the squeeze everything until they ruin it (I’m not talking specifically in dramas, Hollywood had ruined me many movies with the sequels).

"Cash Cow" was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the header for this article, and it is absolutely the only thing that's driving this. I loved Secret Garden a lot, but it was a story that was, for all intents and purposes, told in its entirety within the framework of a 20 episode drama. Within its 20 episode run, it came full circle with both the lead and secondary couples resolving their major conflicts and earning their happily ever after conclusions. Joo-won's mother was the only big conflict that was not completely resolved, but I'm glad that it wasn't a loose end that was tied up all nice 'n' neat and cozy. And, in the end, she stepped aside and let them be.

Hyun Bin and Ha Ji-won ARE Secret Garden, and without either of them, any subsequent work with the Secret Garden label would be nothing more than an empty shadow with a poser tag and dollar signs in its eyes.

Day two: Can’t believe SG has really ended!!!...Need to find SG related post to see what is going on...Wow!!! SG love still going strong!!Yay!!

Day three: Wait, there were other dramas airing at the same time as SG???? Need to catch up on other dramas that went under my radar, also need to check new dramas that are coming up…but still need to go and check other sited for SG updates!!!

Day four: OMG these withdrawal symptoms are killing me!!!!

Day five: Stop!! What are you doing? You said yesterday that you were not going to search for anything SG related…Yes it’s official I have gone nuts, need to find my own Shrink.

Day six: Yay! SG special was awesome, but I wish they had more NG. Sigh! I guess this is really goodbye, thank you show for giving me so much joy these past weeks I will miss you but I think is time for me to move on….

Day seven: What? They might make a sequel, a musical or a movie? nooooooooooooooo!!SBS are you trying to kill me?

SG was awesome, and I totally loved it BUT I see no need to make sequel or anything else. The drama ended well, and there was enough story in the 20 episodes that aired - there is really no need to forcefully create new things just to drag it on and on and on. Go create a new profitable (...because that's what it's about anyway, right?) hit, I say.

Ehh, Season 2?
I kind of dont like where they ended the show, so I wouldnt care for them to pick it up from there either.

My biggest issue with the finale was probably that they ended up having kids. I mean, dont get me wrong, kids are great! But they still felt like their early stages of dating for me, and I felt that their relationship weren't at the mature stages that having kids call for. I do understand that there was a time jump, and it was kind of an epilogue-type thing. But they lost me -I didn't buy that they had kids. It didn't feel real. Soifboidfdowobow.

So, yeah, I wouldnt care for a story revolving them and their married life with kids -because in my head it didnt happen. ... And I'm still bitter that she didnt get a wedding.

It is Sunday.
Work is slow.

I am the very model of a modern chaebol leading man,
I’ve got a giant house, the perfect car and a lot of fans.
I am the closest thing Korea has to royalty
(as long as one discounts the Goong continuity).
I’m tall and even I marvel at my handsomeness,
And I put a lot of work into the distinctive way I dress.
My romance life always goes according to my plan –
In short I am the very model of a modern chaebol leading man.
In fact, when I have some empathy for the proletariat
And when I don’t tell women to do a disappearing act
When I know more of boundaries than a stalker in bush,
And my clothes do not present such a sparkly tush,
When I can keep from getting amnesia for a week or more,
When I don’t humiliate my crush in front of a department store,
And my best friend is not my ex lover and my shrink
You’ll say a better chaebol man never chugged a drink.
For my romantic knowledge is as stunted as a bonsai tree,
And every one is always stunned at my immaturity,
But if you only count the house, the car, and lots of fans,
I am the very model of a modern leading chaebol man.

Usually, I'd love to see it "go on"... but not this time. Doesn't make sense and there isn't more to tell. I guess a movie sometime in the future might be ok -- often Jdramas come with something like that or a special but nothing soon.

I loved it just the way it was despite all its flaws. :)
