49 Days: Episode 14

You know what I love about this drama? It’s not subtle or new or anything, but damn if it isn’t addictively satisfying. It does something that few dramas do—it keeps changing the game, little by little each time, and it actually allows characters to figure things out before we’re left pulling our hair out in frustration. I think I’ve gotten SO used to k-drama characters being blind to the things that we notice, that I find I’m actually surprised when these characters proactively search for clues and deduce things on their own. I mean, nobody’s gunning for Sherlock Holmes territory, but there’s nothing like a little sleuthiness to brighten up my day!
EPISODE 14 RECAP
Ji-hyun finally puts some of the pieces together (and thank god, really, because one can only be endearingly naïve for so long) and shows the Scheduler what she’s found: a graduation picture of him, aka Song Yi-soo, aka Yi-kyung’s boyfriend.
He’s stunned, as he stammers, “…But…that’s me…” She peers up at him curiously, clocking his reaction, and then rushes out the rest of what she knows—that Yi-kyung and Yi-soo were in love (furnishing the birthday card as proof), and that Yi-kyung still cries over him to this day.
His eyes grow wide. “I…loved…this woman?” He points at her, Ji-hyun standing there in Yi-kyung’s body. It’s so strange that they’re talking about her in the third person, while her body is standing right there.
It takes a moment for the shock to wear off, but then he denies it, thinking that Yi-kyung can’t possibly be the girl he loved. Ji-hyun reminds him that he said he had something important left to do—couldn’t it be for Yi-kyung?
He can’t remember, of course, and Ji-hyun’s insistence just sends him spinning into the land of denial. After a moment’s pause, he puts his hand to his face… “This face… do you think I borrowed it?” HA.
And Ji-hyun, ever the gullible one, gasps, “Can you borrow faces??” These two.
He wonders why Ji-hyun of all people found him, and thinks that something went horribly awry. She thinks it’s an easy thing to confirm: he just needs to appear in front of Yi-kyung. And what, give her a heart attack?
But he nixes that idea, since there’s already a built-in failsafe that prevents him from appearing as himself, to anyone from his former life. (It’s the Dead Like Me thing, where he automatically appears with someone else’s face if he happens to bump into someone he used to know.)
She tells him that he should still try, so that he can confirm for himself, since he’s the one who’s got unfinished business that he’s spent five years working for. He flatly denies that it’s about Yi-kyung, since it could be for his parents, or some sort of revenge. She tells him that he’s an orphan, and to stop denying what’s right in front of his face. They’re yelling at each other by now, and he dismisses her, asking for some time to think.
On her way out, Ji-hyun lets out her anger, blaming him for not remembering Yi-kyung. “How could he not remember, when this unni is crying over him?” Aw, it is SO CUTE how she’s taking her unni’s side. I love how much Ji-hyun’s attachment to Yi-kyung has grown.
Meanwhile, the Scheduler thinks it over, recalling the moment in the café, and then again in Jinan, when he felt a weird connection to Yi-kyung. He calls Biker Granny to ask if maybe she could just tell him what his reaper-wish was (the thing he asked for in exchange for the five years of reaper duty, way back when he died). He gets an earful for even asking, and I love what he mutters under his breath: “this unni.” Ha. Part of me still wishes Yi-soo ended up being Yi-kyung’s gay little brother.
As Ji-hyun walks along the street, she sighs that Yi-kyung’s got it rough, living like that because she’s unable to forget Yi-soo. But from her perspective, she muses that no one will remember her that way when she’s gone.
She sighs that she wasted three days at Min-ho’s, and then thinks, “I miss Kang-ee. He must be worried.” AWWW. She checks her phone but there aren’t any messages from him. She pouts, “He’s not worried, he’s mad.”
Min-ho gets some backstory on Yi-kyung from his lackey—that she’s been living off the grid, and that her boyfriend died some years ago. He thinks all of this lines up with why Ji-hyun and Kang befriended and/or helped her.
He goes to meet In-jung, who basically tells him that his time to think is up. What’s he planning to do about the fact that Kang and Yi-kyung know about their plan? His answer: nothing. He trusts them. What’s more is that he’s not going to stop seeing Yi-kyung either.
Ruh-roh. In-jung does not look happy about this development. She cries, asking how he could do this to her, and he tells her that it’s not that never loved her, but he can’t control where his heart goes. That’s cold.
But her reaction is even better: she’s like, You wanna go? Let’s go, asshole. She threatens to go straight to Ji-hyun’s parents if he sees Yi-kyung. She’s got nothing to lose now, and he really should have seen this coming. I’ve been waiting all series long for this table to turn, and I’m excited to see what havoc In-jung will wreak now that she’s been unceremoniously cut loose.
Her first order of business is to do a little digging into Yi-kyung’s so-called internet handle, Jung-eun. She discovers something curious…Jung-eun died, a year ago. Oh, crap. This cover story’s not gonna hold much longer.
Kang digs into the Haemido project and finds out that a shell company was created to buy the land. Fishy. He’s sent Manager Oh to try and find out more about 49-day-ers, but no dice.
Ji-hyun comes back and finds that Kang isn’t mad at all, and even covered for her with the others, that she went on a trip for a few days. He’s relieved to see she’s returned, and doesn’t ask for any explanations.
On her way out to answer a call from In-jung, she drops the letter she had written to Dad when she was going to give up on her 49 days. Kang picks it up curiously.
Ji-hyun meets In-jung, who calls her out on having an ulterior motive and pretending to be Ji-hyun’s friend. Ji-hyun in turn asks In-jung why she did all this to her so-called friend, and she just says she wanted Ji-hyun to know what it was like to have nothing, like her.
Back at Heaven, Kang reads Ji-hyun’s letter and realizes that she knows everything, even her father’s condition and his refusal to have surgery. He thinks back to when she quit and left, and takes out the resignation letter:
Ji-hyun: I was wandering alone in an endless desert, and then I found the oasis-like Han Kang! Boss… thank you. On my final path, you were my only friend. –A friend called Song Yi-kyung
He realizes that she intended to reveal everything to her dad, and that this was a goodbye, forever. He runs upstairs.
In-jung arrives a second after, looking for him, and gets directed downstairs to his office. She sees the letter on his desk and reads it, only she notices something curious—it’s Ji-hyun’s handwriting, and it’s signed with a smiley face that looks familiar to her. She makes a copy of the letter to take with her.
Kang comes down dressed in another suit—KYOW!—but leaves in a hurry. In-jung goes home to compare the letter to her old cards from Ji-hyun. They’re signed exactly the same way, “—A friend called Ji-hyun ” She shakes, and then reasons that it can’t be what she’s thinking…
Kang goes to see Dad, to try and convince him one more time. He tells him that because Ji-hyun isn’t dead, her spirit could be wandering about, watching over him. What if she can see that Dad isn’t getting surgery and risking his life because of her? Wouldn’t that make her want to die, instead of holding on?
This shakes Dad up a little more, and he asks this time if Kang has feelings for Ji-hyun, otherwise why is he being so insistent? Kang gulps, and then lies that Ji-hyun isn’t his type, and urges Dad that this isn’t the way to go. Mom looks on, teary-eyed and grateful for Kang’s persistence.
Min-ho goes to the hospital to visit his mother, but can’t bring himself to go in. He just watches her with a heavy heart, and then when she runs out of her room calling his name, he hides, unable to face her. Tears fall as he listens to her voice, but he doesn’t go out to see her.
He meets Ji-hyun for a date and asks if she’s got any other secrets, and then promptly tells her to quit working at Heaven if she’s going to keep seeing him. Dude, just when I’m about to feel sorry for you for like, a second, you remind me why you’re the villain of this piece. Control freak much?
She doesn’t give an answer, and instead suggests they go back to that restaurant from last time—his mom’s favorite place. It’s all in an effort to get him talking about his mother, of course, and she manages to wrangle his mother’s birthday out of him this time.
That night when Ji-hyun’s soul pops out, she tells Yi-kyung that she’ll get the Scheduler to come see her, and that she hopes that she can meet unni if she lives again. She promises to make her less lonely, if she has the chance. Aw. Yi-kyung can sense that someone is there, and looks around warily.
She heads to work, and a chubby dude with a mustache is being a creepy stalker outside the coffee shop. Turns out it’s Yi-soo in mystical disguise, pacing outside and watching her.
He finally can’t stand it anymore and goes inside to order a coffee. While he waits, he decides that this can’t be right. His eyes glaze over when two girls in short skirts walk past him, and he declares that he would’ve loved someone like them, yunno, since HE looks like THIS.
HA. Oy, the ego on this reaper.
He then decides that they aren’t his type, and looks back at Yi-kyung curiously. He keeps trying to reason that it can’t be, and yet when he’s near her, he can’t shake this strange feeling he gets.
He pays for his coffee and leaves, not any surer of anything. Outside, he says to himself that she doesn’t recognize him, and wonders, “Are we really fated to cross paths?”
In the morning, Ji-hyun sews up the hole she ripped in Yi-kyung’s bag, and then puts her stuff back in, only then realizing that she’s lost her letter to Dad. She panics, thinking someone could’ve found it and delivered it to him.
Cut to the hospital, where her parents receive the letter. Immediately, her necklace flares red-hot, and then shatters. Her soul pops out of Yi-kyung’s body, and the Scheduler appears in a black suit, to tell her that her 49 days are up.
It’s her imagination, of course, because things can’t end that way. And we know that Kang’s got the letter. Dad ponders Kang’s words and wonders if Ji-hyun really is watching over him.
In-jung does a little more digging, asking Ji-hyun’s housekeeper what she remembers about Jung-eun. She tells her that she and Ji-hyun must’ve been really close, since she even knew that Mom doesn’t eat ox bone soup.
In-jung gets rattled, as it dawns on her that her crazy hunch might be right…”Why does it feel… like she’s Ji-hyun?” NICE. So much more interesting this way.
Dad comes to the hospital and announces that he’s getting the surgery. Mom calls Kang, grateful for his part in convincing him. Kang jumps in excitement and calls Ji-hyun to work right away, just telling her that there’s an emergency.
Meanwhile, Ji-hyun goes to the hospital herself to see if the letter has been delivered. Mom’s there and she confirms that there hasn’t been a letter, and tells her about Dad deciding on surgery.
Ji-hyun barely contains her relief, and asks what happened to change Dad’s mind. Mom tells her that it was Han Kang, who she suspects has harbored feelings for Ji-hyun all this time. She points out the bouquet of pink roses that he’s kept fresh all this time.
YESSSSSSSSSS! I LOVE MOM!
Ji-hyun rushes out at Kang’s phone call, stopping in the hallway with tears in her eyes. She bows (at no one, just generally at the universe) in gratitude. In-jung sees this on her way in, and gets confirmation from Mom that “Jung-eun” has been told about Dad’s surgery. She looks at Ji-hyun, lying there, and asks why she keeps feeling Ji-hyun’s presence in Yi-kyung.
Ji-hyun rushes to work, where Kang is pacing back and forth waiting. He tells her to change for work, so she rushes into the locker room, which is labeled “Rocker Room.” LOL. Best misspelling ever. Kang is, appropriately, wearing his rocker leather jacket today to accompany his Rocker Room.
He waits till she leaves and then sneaks in to put the letter in her purse. She’s forgotten her cell phone though, and sees him in there when she heads back in. She hides out of sight and then checks her purse to see what he was doing…and finds her letter…
Freaking out, she runs off like the wind. She meets the Scheduler in the park and tells him in a panic that Han Kang read the letter and knows. Reaper Boy is in no mood to deal with her today, and looks totally deflated from his encounter with Yi-kyung.
He just responds half-heartedly that her necklace is intact, so that must mean that Kang figured it out himself before finding the letter. He tells her that it happens, sometimes, that humans find out. Like 11% of the time. Heh.
He reminds her that this doesn’t mean she can go around discussing her afterlife with Kang or anything, and she rests assured for now. She asks if he can remember anything about Yi-kyung, which of course he can’t, and blames her for drudging up all these confusing feelings.
She was under the impression that reapers didn’t feel human feelings, but he tells her that the closer he gets to the end of his scheduler term, he gains his human feelings back. She urges him to hurry up and remember her, and he poofs away in exasperation.
Ji-hyun walks back, slowly putting the pieces together, after um, she’s been told everything. She realizes that Kang figured it out and that all his awkward sweetness with the bad excuses was him being there for her and not letting on.
She even puts together that the girl he likes, the flowers, the hug… it’s all because he likes HER, and not Yi-kyung.
Everyone with me, now: FIIIIIIIINALLY!
Kang paces back and forth, worrying and waiting, losing his mind over not knowing what’s going on. He starts jabbering to himself out loud, eventually shouting, “Where ARE YOU?!” right as Ji-hyun appears.
He does that adorable worry-shout thing, telling her to please for the love of god TELL HIM when she’s going and where so he doesn’t go crazy. Awwwww.
She asks what the emergency is, and he tells her that Ji-hyun’s dad is getting his surgery. She tells him that she knows since she stopped at the hospital on her way in.
Ji-hyun: Thank you… for convincing Ji-hyun’s dad to have the surgery. I’m saying thanks…in Ji-hyun’s place.
Kang: Shin Ji-hyun is my friend too.
Ji-hyun: Shin Ji-hyun is quite lucky. She’s got two people insisting that they’re her friends.
She can’t let on that she knows, but just smiles at him gratefully, tears in her eyes. He looks at her curiously, but then is interrupted by the other waiter, who he’s sent on a secret errand.
Now it’s time for the boys to have it out. Kang calls Min-ho and over drinks, he confronts him, admitting that he knows what Min-ho is planning to do with Haemido and Ji-hyun’s father’s company.
Min-ho realizes that Kang’s the one digging up dirt on him, and doesn’t play nicey nice anymore. He doesn’t deny any of it, and when Kang asks why Ji-hyun, why her family, he just answers that they’re simply unlucky is all.
They’re unlucky now the same way he was unlucky to be born into his station in life. Kang argues that no matter how bad things were for him, he can’t take it out on other people who aren’t to blame.
Min-ho just scoffs that a silver-spoon boy like him can’t possibly fathom what life is like on the other side. He finally opens up a little about his childhood, as poor and destitute as it gets. He describes the day his father died with a bitter smile as the best day, because at least he knew they wouldn’t be beaten anymore.
He says that his fight isn’t against Ji-hyun or her family, but against Fate itself, God or gods or whatever force that decided his fate. “I wanted to change my fate by my own hand.” So…you’re playing God, is what you’re saying.
Well, a traumatic childhood in and of itself does NOT a megalomaniac make, nor does it make me any more sympathetic to his crazy plan. But let’s just say this is how HE justifies his reasoning and his actions.
Kang says that he’s sorry for what Min-ho has endured, but he’s not going to stand by and watch Ji-hyun and her family lose everything because of him. Min-ho accepts the challenge with a haughty smile, thinking that Kang is no threat to him. Well, we’ll see about that.
In-jung shows Yi-kyung’s resignation letter to Seo-woo, and without reading it carefully, Seo-woo immediately recognizes it as Ji-hyun’s writing. In-jung asks, increasingly worried, if Seo-woo believes in ghosts and souls inhabiting other people’s bodies.
She goes to see Min-ho, armed with the letters, and pleads with him to check if her hunch is true. She insists that this isn’t out of jealousy, and even though it sounds crazy (which he tells her) she asks him to meet with Yi-kyung and try to confirm her suspicion.
Meanwhile, Ji-hyun heads home and is startled by Dr. Noh, who stopped by to find out why Yi-kyung hasn’t been coming to her hypnotherapy sessions. He notes the difference in her appearance, and she tries her best to act like Yi-kyung and rushes inside.
The next day Ji-hyun goes to Min-ho’s place to try the safe, only this time he’s changed his front door lockcode, so now she can’t get inside the apartment. Aaaaargh.
He calls her for a date, and he thinks to himself that In-jung’s theory is crazy… but then when she gets in the car, he notes her shoes. They’re the same ones that she wore to the hotel the day she discovered him with In-jung… and when one of the beads had fallen off, he had picked up.
He takes her to buy new shoes and insists she throw the old ones away, only to have his minion pick them up. At home he finds the bead and compares it to the shoe… It’s a match. DUN DUN.
He waits outside Yi-kyung’s place that night, and Yi-kyung comes out. She sees him but doesn’t acknowledge him, and heads to the coffee shop. He follows her, and then walks in, determined to figure it out once and for all.
He walks up to the counter, “Song Yi-kyung-sshi.”
She looks at him blankly, then answers back: “Yes, Kang Min-ho-sshi?”
WHAT THE…?
COMMENTS
Oh my goodness! What is going on? Is it Ji-hyun in there, breaking the rules to throw Min-ho off her trail? That seems too calculated for Ji-hyun. I think it’s actually Yi-kyung, but remembering Min-ho because the wall that separates her and Ji-hyun is breaking down day by day.
Based on her last hypnotherapy session alone, she’s called up memories lived by Ji-hyun’s soul but in her body, so it’s possible that she recalling things now that she’s been experiencing subconsciously.
I love that this is where the drama is going. I’m fascinated to see what this twist in the soul-host relationship does to shift everyone’s perspective, and to know where it comes from. For example, is this normal for a 49er, or is this happening because Ji-hyun is growing attached to Yi-kyung and forging a bond with her?
How much do I love that Ji-hyun finds out about Kang’s devotion and his sweet heroics far before her 49 days are up? There’s so much time now for the relationship to develop if she knows that he knows, even though he doesn’t know that she knows. You know?
It also just KILLS ME that his big hero move is to save her daddy. It’s so… befitting their high-school-first-crush relationship. I adore how immature and awkward they can be around each other, because it’s that kind of familiarity and transparency that makes Kang diametrically opposed to Min-ho, who is smooth on the outside, but remains a mystery to Ji-hyun.
I love that she now has the upper hand in knowing about his undying crush. I can’t wait to see what he’s inadvertently going to reveal because he thinks she’s still oblivious. Eeeee!

Last week Ji-hyun was able to sleep inside Yi-kyung's body, felt tired, and felt rested. This week she is going to work with her? I wonder how far this merging thing will go.
I think it is interesting that Scheduler says Yi-kyung is really not his type; and Kang says the same thing about Ji-hyun to the father. Hmmm...

There are some speculation that it's really the Scheduler pretending to be YK in the last scene. god knows! I can't wait another week to find out! T.T and also why does Kang never have any "real" customers in his Heaven restaurant? haha

ikr last time when the delivery guy came to bring the flowers to Kang, I was so disappointed because at first I thought it was a customer. *worries about the viability of Kang's business*

It's ok. Kang is also an architect, and a genius one at that. I'm sure he can scrounge up enough funds to keep both the restaurant and his architect job alive =D

well i rather hope it's not the scheduler, but YK herself in the last scene.. i love the connections between JH and YK. protecting and caring for each other. the scheduler might be busy fussing around =)
got customers la... besides the scene to show JH knows magic, there are also scenes like JH causes some chaos during her first day at work, pouring water onto customers..bla bla XD

i think KANG is a rich boy. MH keeps saying that KANG is a rich guy, born with a silver spoon or something like that.
I think he only keeps that restaurant out of love for his mom.

I'm going nuts for this drama. I don't recall the last time I went soo soo crazy over a drama, and you know what, AFTER the first 10 episodes. The anticipation is killing me XD !!
Thank you so so much for the recaps. I couldn't watch the episodes of this week yet since they aren't sub, but your recaps are so so wonderful it already feels like I've watched them :D

Haha I wanted to write the same thing, good thing I read the whole thing first, can't wait to see what they're gonna say to each other when she knows that he knows and he does know that she knows that he knows.

yeah, i just have to keep saying that this drama has one of the best scripts ever. alot of unexpected twist I think partly due to the soul inhibiting, 49days thing, so it allows the script writer a lot of space to do create interesting scenarios.
of course we knw JH is gog to end up with HK, but how is it gog to come about. is she gog to wake up? or maybe YK will passaway and join scheduler in heaven n JH will take YK's body. But this is not logically acceptable too.
The whole plot is JH + HK and YK + YS and MH get busted. But how is it all gog to come about is really going to be interesting.
This is really one of the rare shows that I have to watch the entire hour. For some other dramas, you know you can skip the sections by the minor characters. But for this drama, everything is so closely linked!

Oh Gosh...this is gettin' interesting!!!
I'm really curious 'bout YiSoo's character tho..why he changed so suddenly after high school to YiKyung. I bet when d Scheduler knows everything,he can't control himself anymore to YiKyung. Akh, I need him to remember everything then shows up in front of YiKyung immediately!!!
And for Kang...he's getting hotter each episode..hohoho!!
Thx 4 d recap anyway! Can't wait for next week episodes! Sigh...

I'm so glad you girls picked up this series to recap! As you said, it's fantastic how the rules of the drama keep changing, and it's amazingly refreshing to have a drama free of Noble Idiocy weighing down its plot =]. Can't wait for next week's episodes!

I think it is because he had said his name in the beginning of eps 12 when Ji Huns soul popped out her body. So she probably remembers his name from there?

SHIN IN JUNG & SHIN JI HYUN... I'm just wondering, are they sisters who may be unknown to Ji Hyun but maybe In Jung founds out earlier on and that is the reason of her hatred for Jihyun? As in maybe from same mum different dad or vice versa? Can that be the reason why In Jung have ill-intentions towards the whole family??

Things I love about this episode
1. That last scene was like OMG. Even though I had suspected that Yi-Kyung would eventually come over to Ji-Hyun's side and help her in some way, that scene still blew my mind away. And I'm 95.9% sure that is Yi-Kyung in Yi-Kyung's body. It's about time her soul get's some show time.
2. Ji-Hyun finding out about Kang's feelings for her. I was hoping for a return of the sleep-walking hug, but alas, we don't always get what we want.
3. Absence of one stupid election bar
4. Kang In Another Suit, tehehe
Things I didn't really like
1. I still don't understand Min-Ho's motivation for doing such things to Ji-Hyun and her family. I don't think I ever will.
2. Why did Kang reply (when asked by Ji-Hyun's father) that Ji-Hyun isn't his type?! I don't really see a problem with him telling the truth about his own feelings...(or is he just shy?) and how would he answer Ji-Hyun's father after Ji-Hyun's father got surgery and when all this is over?
3. Seo-Woo. Her character has almost disappeared completely lol. I feel bad for her, since she's been kept in the dark and we're under the impression that she likes Kang a lot, but because I'm all for the KangxJi-Hyun pairing, I rarely think about her character. I hope she get's a happy ending as well somehow.

I'm actually sort of scared about how this is going to roll out.... hopefully in Ji Hyun's favour. If this is actually Yi Kyung at the end of this episode, she'll probably blow Ji Hyun's cover. I really really want these two to develop a super close BFF bond. I'd love that so very much. But since Yi kyung has no idea what the heck is going on, she can't help Ji hyun at this point. Yet.
I also love the Kang x Ji hyun pairing <3

Oh but she does know a little about what is going on. At the very least she knows that Min-Ho is a cheating bast*rd. And she also know (vaguely) that the thing haunting her (whatever it is) said that she'll help her (with finding Yi-Soo, making her less lonely). So even though she's not 100% sure of what is going on, I think she knows instinctively that Ji-Hyun means her no harm, and might even be trying to help her.
That's my take on things at least. Sometimes I read between the lines, even when there's nothing to be read XD.

he has to say JH is not his type cos as far as JH's parents are concerned she is still engaged to MH, who happens to be HK's friend. if he answered that he (HK) is interested in JH, he would appear like a cad in the eyes of JH's parents. he can't even tell them about MH and IJ backstabbing ways because that would further endanger the life of JH's father. the important thing right now is for father Shin to have surgery and get well.

Ah...I guess that explains it. I think the reason why I didn't see it that way was because, well, I never saw Min-Ho as Ji-Hyun's fiance (or deserving of being her fiance), so Kang's feelings for Ji-Hyun has no cause for concern haha...but yeah, I should've thought about the parents perspectives too. Thanks for the answer~

Lol, I like your previous explanation more. Kang's "type" was never really revealed to us, and as far as I'm concerned Ji-Hyun is his only type bwhaha...to say that Ji-Hyun is not his type suggests to me that he's denying his feelings, and while I'd expect that from Min-Ho and Scheduler, Kang has always been honest about his feelings, at least to himself.

I think it's fair to say that Kang's type is JiHyun since according to Min Ho, as long as he's known him, he's never been interested in women and the one time he's interested in a woman, who is it? Ji Hyun in a different body. LOL

Amazing! I watched this epi as soon as the subbed version is out. What an awesome cliffhanger...totally didn't see that coming!
I must say I think BSB is deliciously evil this episode and am so glad so many recognized that his portrayal as MinHo.
Personally I love three scenes in this epi:
1. YiSoo/ scheduler meeting with Yi Kyung at the cafe. It's poignant but hilarious at the same time. Whenever I saw that chubby moustached guy I was giggling...but when I saw how YS teared up in her presence...I was like awwww...
2. HK vs MH showdown. That was sooooo intense. While I think him being in such unfortunate circumstances does not justify his actions now, there are some people who like, MinHo becomes an extremist. I like that his reasons are not based on revenge against JH or her family (that's one of the most used excuses in every drama ever) but simply because of his twisted logic...and that he so believes in his own twisted logic just make him all the more a sad figure in my eyes.
3. The cliffhanger! I swear I rewinded so many times...from previous epi preview I knew MH would meet the real YK but to hear her acknowlege MH had my jaws dropping! No shit! My theory is that YK could hear or even see JiHyun gradually since the last episode...after the hypnosis and their almost touches. You could see YK occasionally tips her her head whenever JH speaks to her. And she had flashbacks of MinHo and some of the going-ons in JH life...my guess is that she know MinHo is up to no good and is in fact helping JH to cover up! How cool is that!
As for why YK could see Yi soo's face when she fainted ....maybe it's because she's fainting and not so conscious that she could see his face?
And I never believed that Dr Noh find Yi Soo's face familiar from the cafe...I'm surprised why many seem to think so...there was no indication that I could think of...if Dr Noh knew YS from before, the scheduler would only appear as another person in his eyes...if not he'd appear as YS...
I love 49days...it's really unpredictable and the story so riveting...can't wait to see what the writer has in store for us....this to me was how Secret Garden should have been a little...I wasn't impressed with how they downplayed the supernatural part of the story...

EEEkkkss -- I love love love this show. I thinking the whole cliffhanger is:
1) YS pretending to be YK (cause this happened before)
2) JH spirit in YK (2nd most likely in my mind and perhaps more likely cause it hasn't been used yet)
3) YK remembering MH through JH spirit or life I suppose.
If it turns out to be my 3rd choice, I guess I'll eat my words cause really I have no idea which one it is. Maybe its #4 "none of the above".
Sometimes I get so confused cause LYW plays JH spirit in YK so really it's kinda like HK is with YK. Anyhow, I do like the HK - JH pairing cause it's mostly LYW playing along side JHJ!! :) :)
I'm still hoping for YS to be in some sort of random coma somewhere so he can wake up. But I know it's really far fetched and doesn't make sense. I don't want YK to pass away though! YS must still be around so that he can save YK from her despair in life right? So she must turn it around & live happily for her remaining time on earth.

after taking his cafe mocha, the scheduler actually said "she didn't recognize me, we really must be fated paths" instead of "are we fated to cross paths" which means he showed himself as himself and she didn't recognize him which according to his explanation to jihyun earlier (those who know him won't see his real face even if he reveals it - a defense mechanism of sorts) he now knows they really were in each other's lives prior to him being a scheduler... EEKK

louisesaji, I'm not trying to get into a back and forth here but JH looks might appealing to me (looks and attitude) especially in the high school scenes. So the first statement is an overstatement and not true for everyone. It implied that everyone picks JK over JH which is not true.

FYI, i am not a nam gyu ri fan. this is my first time to see her in a drama. she is not the greatest actress, but she has managed to charm a lot of people with her acting, me included.
it is true that lyw is the better actress of the 2, but she has more than 10 years of acting experience while NGR is just a newbie.
And please don't make assumptions for other people - not everyone likes JK (she is actually starting to grate on my nerves with her overacting).
I prefer the real Ji Hyun!

Wow just because I like a certain character over the other, I have become NGR fan?! On the contrary, this is my first time seeing NGR's acting. She is lacking, yes, but I thought she brought it to the table with her scenes from flashbacks. I adore her in those scenes. And please don't pass opinions as facts when using "everyone"

Why does it seem like many people are being defensive about one person's particular point of view?
I try to keep in mind that 'the internets' is a limited platform of communicating the intended tone of a message, so it's open for interpretations and, thus, multiple responses~
Still, it just saddens me when the comment section derails into bickering--which IMO this thread kindna did.
Yes, it may have been an overstatement to say "everyone", but nothing to be offended about (I interpreted everyone as meaning 'a majority' or 'a lot of people' having this view).
On another note, in terms of the actresses and their respective characters, I think that Nam Gyu-Ri is charming in the drama due to how well her character has been developed, not necessarily because of her performance--which I find flimsy.
This is the first drama where I've encountered either actresses, so I can't comment on their past acting projects. Nonetheless, I can understand why some viewers may be drawn more to Lee Yo-Won than Nam Gyu-Ri, at least in terms of the quality of performance in the drama.
At any rate, I love Ji Hyun's character, she's so sweet (though she can be too dimwitted at times, which is frustrating). I am rooting for her to have a second chance at life. I also hope that Yi Kyung can heal and gain back her spark/hope~

i Just feel there's something "LACK" when i see Ji Hyun in Nam Gyu Ri
Lack acting (of course,, epi 1 really iritates me seeing her Circle Lens, all she can do to show the feeling/ acting is just WIDEN her cyrcle eyes, makes me bothered,, seriously.....

I think I know what my problem is.
It`s not that I dislike JiHyun its just that I don`t like the fact that she is using Yi KYungs body and gots all the attraction on herself.
And of course that she is acting all like her oldself.
By leaving that big impressions that she is JiHyun. She should be more careful and smarter in handling this matter.

It's not like Ji Hyun chose to be in someone else's body. Did you forget that Yi Kyung selfishly tried to kill herself on the highway and that led to so much vehicular damage and is partly responsible for Ji Hyun's accident?
YiKyung is paying her penance by having Ji Hyun use her body.

my point is, since she is the one who is living a life of a death person about 5 years there must be a good thing happening to her also.
Everyone is focused on Ji Hyun and Kang, I think the most pitiful person in here is Yi Kyung.
She should also get a cance to live her life again. Just like Ji Hyun who gets a chance to collect the tears.
We see Yi Kyung only as a death person whom`s body is been used as Ji Hyun.
There must be a good thing happening to her too.
Its not like the world is created for JiHyun to have a good life...or to gain love from everyone in her gasp.
Thats why I am little dissapointed.
Maybe I am too impatient. Maybe we will see more of her after the next episode....
I am not sure but actually I feel a little lost in the whole plot....

But Yi-Kyung does get her chance. She get's her chance by living through Ji-Hyun's experiences, and through these experiences she is given the chance to come to terms with the very reason that made her the way she is now, i.e. her relationship with Scheduler.
At the same time she also establishes a relationship with Ji-Hyun, and we know that Ji-Hyun feels very protective of her Unni. She goes out of her way in order to find Yi-Soo, and even tells her that she'll come back to Yi-Kyung if she comes back to life so that Yi-Kyung will be less lonely. I don't see how doing these things would benefit Ji-Hyun in anyway.
To say that their relationship only amounts to the sharing of the same body diminishes this importance fact.

testify, Ji Hyun is the main character and always has been. That's the premise of the drama. But with the end of episode 14, it looks like they are pulling Yi Kyung into her world as well. Plus they are delving more into her connection with the scheduler. The plot has been moving really quickly since episode 9 so I am sure more of Yi Kyung's story will be told as well. She will not end this drama in the same depressed state she began it in.
Having said that, Ji Hyun in Yi Kyung's body is the main character which is why the main focus is on her story.

No. i don't think it's boring, i and i'm sure so many viewers reall want to have more the REAL Song Yi Kyung to present more than Ji Hyun.
story of Ji Hyun has been so clear until now and almost more than 13 episode only focus on Ji Hyun's story.
OK, Ji Hyun is the main character maybe but please don't make Yi Kyung just to be side character.
the story really didn't move so much as well until they reveal more Yi Kyung's story.
and you know this is also influence the Rating, 49 Days rating was so low since the beginning, and you know what the first time 49 Days get high floop of rating is in epi 10, WHEN THEY SHOW YI KYUNG - YI SOO' s PAST (the Picnic scene) and that scene is the first when AGB live rating notes to be the HIGHEST rating ALONG the drama airs since epi 1-10....
so,,, MORE SONG YI KYUNG , PLEASEEEEEEEE !!!!!!!!

I do appriciate the good intensions of Ji Hyun towards Yi Kyung. And there is nothing wrong with Ji Hyun either.
It`s not her job to take care for YiKyung. Since there are no other boundaries then sharing one body.
And it was not her wish to choose this situation...
But she got a chance to change her fate. And she has reasons to hang on, like her father or mother or friends or to layout this crime Min Ho and In Jung created....
What I ment was all in general, that there must be also a reason for Yi Kyung even without Ji Hyun to get over her depressed situation and to hang on in life again. A waking up or shaking everything off. I don`t know how to describe it.
Even though this is a story about Ji Hyun, the rest of the people in this story should become also a ground position to live on...

And this is a way how he thinks he can take revenge on his fate.

I think I kinda get what you're saying. You're saying that you wish Yi-Kyung played more of a part in standing up on her own, than rely on all these ghostly manipulations to show her the way, right? You want her to man up, instead of wallow in her own misery and waste away. (Please correct me if I'm wrong ^^'')
I suppose if this was real life, and if I was a friend of Yi-Kyung's, I'd feel the same way as you.
But from the point of view of the story, Yi-Kyung's inability to move on is vital component to not just Ji-Hyun's development, but also her own. It alludes to the depth of her love for Yi-Soo, and the severity of the trauma she experienced as a result of losing him. I see that part as rather realistic in itself. We can't expect everyone to dust themselves off and pick themselves up again without help, and in Yi-Kyung's situation - being an orphan, losing someone (possibily the only one) dear to her, clearly costed her greatly.
As for the chance, I think it really depends on how you view "chance". Yi-Kyung is alive, that in itself gives her a variety of choices. She chose to wallow in misery for 5 years (not to sound mean about it, because had I been in her situation I'd definitely wallow for a long time).
And I think she does have a reason to cling on to life. Remember that scene in episode 7 when Yi-Kyung was about to hang herself? Dr. Noh returned her that rose, and she changed her mind about dying.
While Ji-Hyun might provide her with the connections to solving her problems, it's Yi-Kyung herself that has to take the steps towards healing. And like Ji-Hyun said, she's more outgoing now (in a way), and she was even able to confront some memories (looking at a photo of her and Yi-Soo when they were kids). She's becoming more active. Small steps, small steps!
She seemed very cheerful and full of life in the flashbacks, we may expect some of that character to return, once things get going. Don't give up!
For me, time after death is more about the people that were left behind by those who died, than about those who've passed on themselves. It's one of the reasons why I love 49 Days so dearly, as despite being a fantasy genre, it portrays attitudes towards life and death in a very realistic fashion.

Hmmm.... seems like you put a lot of thought into one drama. I put that into something simple for you. Some say this drama is about LIFE and so on. Why don't you look at this from different point of view. It is about people who can't let go whatever they hold on to.
Does it sound simple?

I think one of the beauties of this drama is that it makes us think beyond the story. It has a storyline warrant of such thinking, and I think discussion in all/any directions has the ability to help suss out point of views that we may not necessarily have noticed ourselves. And in formulating my answer for Testify, I think I was able to understand Yi-Kyung a bit better. A Yi-Kyung that I otherwise would not have noticed, if Testify did not ask that question. People doesn't necessarily have to agree with me, but empathy is an important tool.
Of all the dramas I've watched thus far and followed on Javabeans, this is the one which made me broke out of my lurkish shell and step into the discussion boards. Asking questions, getting confused, misinterpreting, but at the end of the day, getting an answer...I think that's part of the fun~

I'm not so much into following k-dramas..strike that
I wasn't so much into following k-dramas. I'm totally hooked now.
I really can't wait till next week's episodes so if you could please recommend a good drama to watch like this one.

Here are some of my thoughts:
I think there is a little bit of jealousy going on among the fans of the two actresses. I mean they play the same character (which is the main character) and their portrayal is a bit different. I kinda don't feel that JH (authentic played by NGR) and JK (LYW) are the same person. I think it could be LYW tries too much sometimes overacting or NGR puts little effort (sometimes she has kinda blank expressions) I mean their acting should be adjusted to each other. it's like the JH's character can be recognized only by habits. Maybe I'm too demanding. Not hating on the actresses! This is the first time I see them in a series. I find LYW very talented and beautiful

I agree with you, I find Lee Yowon very talented & beautiful too. I think she played the role so well as Ji Hyun in Yi Kyung's body, the character growth was carried out smoothly. What makes the two Ji Hyun different is that the spirit of the real Ji Hyun seems didn't grow, she acts the same as she came out from the earlier episodes until now. Maybe the PD & the writer were just so focus on Ji Hyun in Yi Kyung's body.

and NGR is also beautiful and frankly speaking I liked her more here don't know why. So I can see why people want one or another actress end up with JHJ cause he's the main guy. There is a real mix and confusion in characters and actors in this show because if you biased your perception is different. All these triangles and even squares. On one hand so far most ship JH-HK YK-YS pairings ,some JH-scheduler and JK-HK, some YK-HK and JH-MH. I haven't probably list all possible pairings. I think it doesn't matter which actor or actress will get the happy ending but more important is how the story unfolds so that everyone and everything had a logical development also interesting or fun or touching or.. Well YK's character is not much developed and now I can't predict her future. I don't see her ending up with YS cause he's long dead, HK because it'd be strange because he's like ideal loyal reliable and he loves JH so much,
MH cause he's bad guy, the doctor because he's ridiculous stalker..
BUT all of this can happen because YS is her true and only love and this is a fantasy show and there a lot of loopholes, HK because she really needs some good guy next to her and JH might die and give them her blessing, MH because his relations with women are one damn mess, the doctor because she needs
a psychiatrist..

As for other characters and actors:
I find HK a little bit too perfect he always does the right thing that's why he's boring but JHJ is good. I hope JH will wake up and remember him) cause I like his awkwardness when near her.
BSB is doing good job portraying his strange contradictory character it's just I don' like his haircut it's unflattering. Really curious about his past, mother, motivations, true feelings and emotions. I hope he'll find his way to self redeem.
JIW is fun to watch and he is hot as pepper. Recently I've more depth to his scheduler. One part of me wants YS be happy with YK but also him falling for JH will be sweet.
Injung is one selfish jelous bitch. Don't know the limits of a person who can pretend all his or her life. Friendship love are sacred. These things are deserved to live for not to play with.. Actress is attractive and plays rather well.
And sorry for making it so long.
And thanks to the scriptwriter for letting me have fun and getting me hooked and impatient.

As I understood nam gyuri had some controversies in the past and this is one the reasons she is disliked
I think she looks rather decently and deserves some recognition for her efforts
And her JH is likable and I like her even more than JK can't explain this
Of course JH character is much developed and in a nice way so there is some action and changes that LYW can play out comparing to YK poor storyline
But somehow I like NGR despite her lack of acting experience

I just realized something while rewatching this episode for the n'th time.
In Ji-Hyun's hospital room, we see two bouquet of flowers. One is from Min-Ho (brought in at episode 4, under the tv). It looks like it's just about to die off, having lost its original shape and most of the petals are browned over. Move over to Kang's winter roses, which he has been changing regularly.
I think it represents a nice contrast between the love of Min-Ho and the love of Kang. One is dying, left forgotten, the other pure and healthy. I love all these little touches so much <3
That and Rocker Room. Didn't even notice until I read the recaps.

This drama is really good in the fact that the second half has picked up instead died down like most of the other overrated dramas before. I hope it is yikyung that knows minho in the last scene but I am thinking it is scheduler covering for jikyung instead.

I read somewhere that fans speculated that somehow JH's soul will remain in YK's body at the end......I think it is possible.....I am like everyone else is drawn to the JH character in YK....it would actually be a bit weird to have a happy ending with Kang and the real JH :).

I don't know how the writers would go about it but I'm on a HK + YK union ending.
Reaper boy will carry out his task on the allotted time.
JH survives, the Dad gets his operation and survives. JH recuperates and goes back to her bubbly self. She will also become very good friends with YK; Being an orphan, YK will become a part of her family.
MH and IJ will get what they deserve.
SW remains JH's friend.
Just my 2 cents.

49 days caused me a sleepless night... and guess what? I figured the secret plot underneath this drama!!!
Ok, here is how my head started spinning – Ji Hyun’s smiley kept pestering at me and then I remembered her smile at Kang after rolling down the hill in their flashback from school time... I thought I saw that smile somewhere else... Oh, it is Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wanderland, of course... Wouldn’t you say our Scheduler is a lot like rabbit running somewhere with his cell phone watch? And In Young is like the red headed Queen plotting her master revenge behind everyone’s backs? Dear Kang is White Knight resquing Ji Hyun from Red Knight (Min Ho) (that would be from Through the Looking Glass)... And it all ends as a dream since Ji Hyun will forget everything after her 49 days... The only hope remains is that Scheduler’s seonbae made it just look like a dream and in reality it was REALITY...
So, how do you like my insight? Of course, drama characters are not direct reincarnations from Alice stories, but I thing the inspiration comes from there... thus making 49 days another drama with ties to Lewis Carrol’s work (Secret Garden did cite from Alice in Wonderland a lot).
Well, I might be reinventing a bicycle and this Alice and 49 days parallel is circulating somewhere on the web already, but sure thing, it was nice to find it for myself on my own J
Some other notes:
- “picnick scene” as a starting point in the book hints that Yi Kyung might be the main Alice while Ji Hyun works as her awakener and guide (Cheshire cat)...
- “A” brooch on Seo Woo’s shoulder in ep. 9 stands for Alice and Seo Woo herself reminds me of Hatter with her hairstyle looking a lot like a hat... Besides, she works as a manager at a bakery where it is always “tea time”...
- Or maybe Kang’s birthday is tea party with Hatter and March Hare?... or maybe I am going too far with my imagination....

I'm so restless waiting for next epi I saw the Legend of Hyang Dan which have been reviewed favorably...
Wow...Seo Ji-Hye looks really pretty in less make up if you ask me...in 49days, I always get the feeling that her eyes are kinda strange...too much makeup maybe? But she looked lovely in LOHD that I almost didn't recognize her.
LOHD is a lovely story. Of cos SiWon is so cute in there.

ermm okay so i had a scroll down of the comments and i dont think anyone else has thought this so i dno if this is too far fetched but is it just me but I thought that the reason song yi kyung recognises min ho is that i bet when ji hyun went inside the scheduler appeared as was like 'min ho is outside you fool haha' so then the scheduler transforms to be her while she stays in the body at home.. till the coast is clear....!
