Go Hyun-jung publishes beauty book

Add actress Go Hyun-jung to the list of actors-turned-authors; the Daemul and Queen Seon-deok star has published a book of beauty secrets titled, appropriately enough, Go Hyun-jung’s Secrets.

The book covers Go Hyun-jung’s everyday life in “documentary format,” which, uh, okay. (I suppose we can deduce that it means there are photos and short descriptions/essays/ blurbs describing her life, but still. Oh well; this wouldn’t be the first time the word documentary was stretched to describe one of her projects.)

With its publication, Go joins other actors like Eugene and Song Joong-ki, who have both put out similar books within the past year or so. And I suppose if you’re going to peddle a beauty book, it helps to be known for beauty; Go was even a beauty pageant queen back in the day. Er, maybe princess is a better word; she was the Miss Korea runner-up back in 1989. (Trivia! A few other Miss Koreas in the biz include Secret Garden’s Kim Sa-rang, as well as Mrs. Kwon Sang-woo, Sohn Tae-young, who was a runner-up in the same year. And, of course, there’s also Honey Lee from 2007.)

The book was released on the 29th, and Go held a press conference where she unveiled the volume and answered questions from the media. Mostly about the kind of beauty regimen she follows, and what kind of tips are given in the book. Go said, “It may not be anything special, but I’d been thinking that I’d like to share about the kinds of things I’m doing. Then the publisher came to me with the proposal, and I thought that with a book, I’d be able to express myself honestly.”

Asked what kind of message she’d like to convey to readers, she said, “I want to tell them not to believe too much in the appearance of actresses on television. There are a lot of beautiful actresses who shine there, but people in this line of work receive help from numerous other staff members, and present themselves to you all only after endless picking and choosing. I saw a certain person somewhere, and thought she was beautiful. But I don’t think we ought to compare ourselves to them, thinking, ‘I wish I could be like that.’ Everyone is beautiful in and of themselves. I want to tell people not to compare themselves against someone else and rate ourselves lower.”

Lovely sentiment, although I’m sure it’s easier said than done. Particularly when you’re a top star who, at the age of 40, looks even better than she did twenty years ago. In fact, it’s enough to make you suspicious that she hasn’t, oh, sold her soul for that baby face. It’s too unfair to just chalk it up to winning the jackpot at life.

I have to say that whether you are one person, or three people, this is a very strange conversation to follow!

I assure you, it is not one person. And I can see the strangeness in the event. My confusion is whether it really is three people or just two. I'm thinking three.

She looks good! She's thinner now.

I like her frankness. She's very entertaining when she tell a story. Its refreshing to read an actress who talks frankly about herself and not the usual sugar coated answers from Korean celebrities.

I remember an interview Christie Brinkley did with Oprah, and she rattled on about "inner beauty, inner peace blah blah blah" and Oprah was like, "But come on! You're Christie Brinkley!" or something to that effect (meaning it's so easy for her to say those things because she won in the genetic lottery).

I think the opposite, that people who we define as "beautiful" really do know that inner beauty counts...because they have physical beauty and have first hand experience that it is not enough/satisfying.
It's like hearing from a rich person that money isn't everything..they have proof.

i think the only example and true person who can really say something to that effect is Ludwig Wittgenstein.

The man was born to riches, but donated EVERYTHING because he realized that money doesn't bring happiness.

I think it is quite a moot point for a rich man to say money isn't everything when he's still rich because he still lavishes in the money and hasn't really gone pass the attachment of money and happiness.

Just a small blurp on wittgenstein, fun enough, he donated his wealth to other wealthy people because he believed that the poor was already far ahead and "richer" than the wealthy. Ah, love wittgenstein.

Great points, and wittgenstein seems really cool now (I studied his theories in uni but not his personal life.)

Yum Jung Ah and Park Si Yeon were also runner ups right? But is it only Honey Lee who won the crown and turned into an actress? Are there more? Just curious =)

Right now Park Si Yeon has got a pretty solid acting career, even better than Honey Lee's. Park is one of my favorite actresses because she's improved with every project - from awful in My Girl to wonderful in Coffee House.

nonsense... all of them can afford expensive facial treatment, facial skincare products n mask.. plus extra supplements. they even go to dermatologist like every month..
so for most readers, i don't see it is workable for us.

I totally agree. Getting expensive facials and going to dermatologist every week is bound to make your skin shine no matter how bad it is. If you look at her old dramas, she has really good skin to start with, but the reason why she's able to keep it in her condition is because she gets all that treatments and luxurious care an ordinary working person wouldn't be able to afford or get. Man, do I sound grumpy or what? LOL

Even so, I'd like to know what kind of regime she gets from her dermatologist. Oxygen facial? Bee venom? Vitamin C iontophoresis? AHA / BHA / glycolic acid? Chemical peel? Does she use a primer? My inner beauty junkie is just giddy thinking about the secrets that she (hopefully) will reveal truthfully.

I am actually in awe of her and other actresses among the Sandglass and Eyes of Dawn alumni; Chae Si-ra, Jo Min-soo and Lee Seung-yun.
They all look great and make us, the younger generation look like total slobs. I'm pretty useless with skincare.

I don't think she's had any work done and she looks no different to what she did in '95.

"I don’t think she’s had any work done and she looks no different to what she did in ’95."

GHJ did . . . but that was before she entered the pageant. (I'm guessing double eyelids.) She mentioned it in her Golden Fishery episode.

In the episode, she mentioned mentioned that she keeps a vigilant beauty regimen, and that she avoids using the air conditioner while in the car. Good to know!

I agree, people judge MUCH too rashly!!! And they keep comparing everything and everyone, without even having an idea of who those people are @_@~ So many people are fixated on what they look like on the outside, when we're just a bunch of atoms thrown together XD

I guess people who have everything they need on a material level are more prone to concerning themselves with beauty? Or maybe if one isn't happy with oneself! :o People who starve aren't going to give a rat's ass about how they look, only about how to survive, or something @_@~

Every time I see her name I think about her two children. I just can't believe that in the 21st century, a woman can be cut off from her kids so completely. It saddens me that such 19th century attitudes still prevail anywhere in the world.

(And, honestly, I can't help but imagine her ex and his mother as some nasty chaebol a**holes who are poisoning her kids minds. Presumably, when her kids are adults they will be free to contract her, but will they even want to by then?)

Phew, sorry for the minor rant. I hope the book is a success. GHJ looks lovely in the photos.

I know same here. She must be missing them everyday and after she said that she wants to act as long as possible so that her children can see her on tv, it just broke my heart. And then I feel like punching her chaebol ex-inlaws in the noses.

Is it weird for me to say that...I like her teeth?

I think if she looked this glamorous in What's Up Fox, even the naysayers would have fallen in love with the couple.

She has a very classic sort of beauty. It's nice to see, in a society where (as one songwriter said) everyone wanting to become famous is fast starting to look the same.

The one advice I thought was a bit extreme but is useful nonetheless is that she doesn't even turn on the heat in the car when it is cold outside because dry air wreaks havoc on the skin.

I totally agree and despite me shivering in the car driving in sub zero temperatures, I never did turn on the heater. I guess it's a plus that I saved some gas too!

One thing I admire about GHJ is that she doesn't exercise. :D She's joked that she choose her wardrobe to hide her tubby stomach, but she's a healthy weight by our standards, and she loves eating her cake.

GHJ's the pretty auntie who moonlights as an A-list star, and in a way she's always been the exception to the rules. Her precedent will probably never happen again in Chungmuro.

This is funny to read about after watching that show "Sparkling."

The Editor in chief of a publishing house is asked to print a manuscript for a beauty guide from a movie star. He says something to the effect:
"Is this a book? It's trash! Filled with stuff you can find on the internet and her pictures."

But the staff talks him into it because they sell so well
bringing in a LOT of money. That makes up the expenses of the more literary but less popular works. "With that money, we don't have to give up, and we can produce good books."

Art imitating art.

There's little doubt that Go Hyun Yung has looked fantastic at every age, but saying that she looks better now than she did 20 years ago does not do her 20 year old self justice. Posting pictures of ageleess beauties like GHY and Kim Hye Soo (etc.) as they appeared in their earlier days really gives one the idea of what the fuss was and is still about. Still beautiful now, but staggeringly beautiful then...

"her 20 year old self justice."

I'd argue that her pancake makeup then didn't do her justice. ;)

GHJ's always been popular with selling beauty products, and a lot of it has to do with her appearance staying eerily the same since her Sandglass days. Full cheeks, perfect skin, same hair, etc.

I think a lot of it has to do with her not dieting. Kim Nam Joo is turning 40 next week, and she looks stunning. But because she maintains a very slender figure, she doesn't have the fullness in the face.
