. . . and we're back to the smoking!!! what is wrong with these actors!! I know, the whole"contract" and "pose" thing, but they keep putting a cigarette in the "rugged hot guy" look, when in real life if someone looked like that with a cigarette, you would most probably steer clear cause he'd be a gangster or sth like that!!!

Yeah, I'm sorry. As someone who gets violently ill from even a whiff of cigarette smoke even outdoors, I have zero sympathy for people whining about not having the right to poison themselves and others in public places. Moral superiority has nothing to do with it.
There are others who have much more cause to complain about the way public space is used - for example, the disabled.

I REALLY don't want to get into a dust-up with you (or anyone) about this, cause I do totally understand where you're coming from (yeah, why should anyone have the right to pollute my personal space with their nasty, carcinogenic habit)... but I also don't feel that smoking should be SO abhorred and stigmatized as a disgusting thing that only morons do.
Having worked in the medical and mental health fields, I have seen how smoking can be a coping mechanism for people that's considerably better for them (and often for the people around them) than the coping mechanisms smoking replaces.
Again, I'm not suggesting that smoking is a great or healthy thing, and maybe I have no leg to stand on when suggesting that the public should allow it where they can be affected, but I would ask for a little less of a judgmental attitude toward those who smoke.

I'm not trying to get into a fight with you at all! I hope it didn't come across that way.
I do understand that smoking is an addiction that is very hard to beat, and I don't have anything against smoking that goes on in private spaces (although I feel sorry for smokers' kids). I do have a problem with smokers acting all righteous about their "right" to smoke in public places though, because I am so tired of being blasted by smoke in doorways at school for example, which I have no way of avoiding. At least in North America, our freedom to practice our rights is bounded by the provision that our rights don't trample on those of others, or harm them in any way. The same way free speech is limited to anything that is not hate speech.
It's true that people are often very disdainful of smokers, and it would be better to focus on the behaviour as harmful rather than those who engage in it... because there's just no point in that. But I also think that as a society we have endured enough casualties, lost enough lives to tobacco-related illnesses, that a culture in which smoking is no longer socially acceptable is justified, and one of the steps toward eradicating it completely.
I don't know much about your field, and nothing about the personal circumstances of your patients, so in that area I will yield to your greater expertise. :)

I absolutely understand your concern for a public space that acknowledges the positive rights of, and doesn't violate the negative rights of, any citizens in the public space. What those rights are, I think, is still to be determined.
However, I cannot disavow the psychic pain I've seen in so many of my patients. You can think whatever you will about the (purported) cause of their pain, but that many people in (at least the US) feel immense psychic pain and are desperately seeking an alleviation of that pain, is, I think, probably indisputable.
I'm really not sure why I'm getting so serious on a blog that's certainly here to appreciate the hotness of a man whose hotness I also appreciate, but all the virulently negative comments about smoking have really gotten to me, I guess, and I want to defend my (former) patients for whom smoking cigarettes is probably the least-harmful and least-painful mind-altering circumstance in which they could find themselves.

And also, actually, I currently live in Korea, and smoking is quite socially acceptable here... you can still smoke in restaurants and bars and coffee houses, and you'll see many people smoking on the streets.
My point is not that smoking is healthy (OF COURSE it's not) but that in the society in which these actors live, seeing someone with a cigarette in an ad or photo shoot doesn't have the impact (or aura of differentness or glamour) it would have in, say, the US, since people here are pretty accustomed to seeing people smoke anywhere and everywhere.
Yeah, maybe they should all be doing PSAs -- maybe that would help to reduce the smoking rate here -- but I strongly suspect that the mandatory military service here has a much greater impact on (at least) men's attitudes toward smoking than any PSAs or magazine spreads.

I totally get where you're coming from. I live in Iran, and here it's the same; I even get scolded by my friends because I'm too sensitive to this subject when it's not a big deal to smoke. all I'm saying is if we go along with this flow, the next generation is going to be less sensative and the next and . . . but if we start from somewhere, say TV and other media,or just our personal conversations, and voice our distaste for it and how it bothers us, things will gradually get better. I can remember a time when all the men in the family would go out and smoke after meals; but now it's much better, the next generation has a better awareness. so we can make a difference, one person at a time :)

I can look at this picture and think, wow sooooo freaking hot!!!! total bad-boy aura. *YUM*
but in reality, where i live as an oncology nurse (that's cancer patients i take care of for peeps who are unaware), smoking is NOT hot and those people no longer have a bad-boy aura.
I commend people for quitting, because it is extremely difficult. I know if I was told to never drink coffee again, i might cry. We all have our vices, and some are worse than others.
but to see first hand how it ruins lives in the truest sense. and it's not just old people. i have had young lung cancer patients who died with young children at home. Lung cancer is so dangerous because it is slow to grow, and it really likes to go to the brain. that is usually when we find it, when the cancer is so far gone, and it has started to affect the brain. not pretty.
to consciously make the decision to smoke is one thing, but to consciously make the decision to smoke and to put others at risk who do not smoke themselves is another. I cannot condone that behavior. Do whatever you want to yourself but not to others. Second hand smoke is serious. I can tell you til I'm blue in the face not to smoke b/c it's bad for you. but don't put others at risk, especially the people you love.

I'm actually glad you posted your opinion, Sethe. I agree with you. Of course smoking is bad! But it's the habit and its results that are evil; smokers themselves, fictional or otherwise, shouldn't be vilified, at least not to this extent, that is unless they're blowing smoke in your face. It's like if I were to express my disdain for plastic surgery and its propagation on EVERY article with photos of an actor who's had it. Wouldn't it get irritating?

Thanks for agreeing with me. And let me just try to clarify my point(s), since I think I might've been a little confusing.
First, I just don't think it's helpful to scorn or vilify smokers -- yeah, because it's an addiction that's hard to kick, and also because it provides a mind-altering condition (temporarily) that many people crave (for various reasons) and it provides a way to cope with negative feelings/situations that's often much healthier (all-around) than other things people might do to deal with those feelings and situations. (And yeah, of course that's not why everyone smokes... probably some people do it just cause their friends do, or whatever, but the blanket condemnation of all smokers seems really unnecessarily judgmental to me.)
My second point is that, whether or not Kang Ji-hwan smokes himself (in real life) and whatever his reasons for doing so might be (if he does), I don't think that seeing an actor smoking in an ad or magazine here in Korea has the same impact it'd have in, say, the US, cause smoking is so much more accepted and unremarkable here.
And as to that, maybe these actors could be urged by their fans (including those posting here) to start an anti-smoking campaign, and try to change this Korean social norm ;)

I used to smoke. No longer. Going on 3 years now - quit cold turkey - was very difficult to quit. I felt (and still feel) like a part of me has gone away. I quit because it smelled foul to others, for health reasons, for family health reasons, etc.
But:
1. Let's be real. It looks cool on certain people.
2. As a former smoker, I can say that there are days when I miss it a lot. Delicious, I would say, if someone were to ask why I used to do it. Yummy and delicious. (note, it wasn't always delicious - sometimes i would get a headache because of smoking, other times i would get a headache if I didn't smoke).
3. There is something romantic about smoking. Maybe it is because I see it through (smoke)-colored lenses, but I think it can set a scene or a mood, in a way that cannot be done without.

once you start, it's very hard to quit. Congratulations to You!! COLD TURKEY that is very awesome of you!
(but there is a case where you could get throat cancer, have to take the larynx out surgically, and now you gotta HOLE in you throat... that's right! a real HOLE! and my teacher said she once saw someone smoke THROUGH the hole... *sigh* some people just can't ever learn, even after going through it the hard way..)

YAY!!! Someone else who's not as rabidly adherent to the anti-smoking platform as most people (admittedly, for decent reasons) are. They say anti-smoking and anti-obesity are two of the last acceptable biases (in the US, at least). I have no point with that, really. (Cause it's super-easy to argue that both conditions cause major health problems and thus health expenditures.)
In any case, one of my coworkers at my new job totally resembles Kang Ji-hwan... I'm unable to stop myself from flirting with him (cause that's really kind of my thing) even though he's probably leaving soon :(

Based on this photo essay, it is because he just got a new puppy. The puppy kept them up all night whimpering, completely ignoring the many newspapers KJH put down.
In the first photo, he is tired and rethinking his decsion to live with a dog instead of buying a new car, and his neck is sore from sleeping on the floor.
You can see the dog's water bowl behind him in the second photo, as well as the soiled and discarded newspapers.
Someone help with number three. Maybe the smell is so bad, smoking masks it?

Why can't we have the hot guy looking hot AND useful at the same time? Like not just sitting/slumping/sleeping but actually DOING something. How about...hot guy shirtless and sweaty fixing the plumbing? Hot guy shirtless and sweaty watering the flowers/mowing the lawn/fixing the curtains (can a hot guy do that, or is it too girly?)/ironing his boxers/ scrambling eggs in an frilly apron over a bare torso/scrubbing the shower floor clothes-less?

Yeah I always wondered about that.
How about fixing a car in nothing but a pair of dirty jeans, smears of grease artfully arranged on his skin? I don't know what is is about guys fixing cars... so cliche, but it gets me every time.

I actually think he looks sexy with the cigarette. Cigs are not good for your health. But that doesn't take away their sex appeal. My opinion: Looks damn sexy in pictures just not in real life when you have to inhale that smoke and smell.

I don't smoke but even the third pic is HOT in so many different levels.
I like the the dapper KJH but seeing him all rumpled and scruffy made me think of not so wholesome things. :D
