You’ve Fallen For Me: Episode 2

What this drama lacks in slickness, it makes up for in sweetness. I’m sentimental about youth angst dramas, because they’re what I grew up on, but they also feel like a throwback because of that. They’re like drama comfort food, like Mom’s cooking. And while the tonal shifts in this one are still a bit wonky, the overall mood is like I’m back in high school, watching my first campus drama Feelings all over again. Sigh. Good ol’ days.

EPISODE 2: “If Only That, My World”

Tensions flaring high, Shin throws back at her that he’s heard her play too, and repeats her gesture, pounding on his heart. “You didn’t move me, not even the tips of my fingers.” Not one to back down (which I love) Kyu-won counters that he knows nothing of gukak (classical Korean music), so he can just shut his trap.

He challenges her to a wager then, if she’s so confident: Rock Vs. Gukak, and the loser is a servant for a month. Oh lordy. Please kick his ass.

The second he leaves, Kyu-won demands for the girls to assemble, like a mobster. Heh. And before she knows it, word of the battle spreads across campus, and turns into an all-out war. (They made a rule to exclude singing—just instrumental, to make it fair.)

She runs into Seok-hyun again (literally forehead-to-chest), and he returns her sheet music from the other night. I love that she definitely considers him an ajusshi and he treats her kind of like a kid… and yet… I totally want these two to be together. Gah. I can’t help it. He’s so much more interesting than Shin at this stage in the game.

Drummer Jun-hee’s big crush Hee-joo comes by the band’s studio looking for Shin, and when he introduces himself as The Stupid’s drummer, she refuses to believe that Jumpsuit Junior and Hot Drummer are one and the same. Hee. Please let her fall for drummer boy not knowing that Clark Kent/Superman are the same, and then get promptly thrown off her high horse.

It turns out that Kyu-won’s still got a good relationship with Dad who’s teaching music down in the countryside, but it’s kind of a secret relationship, kept at bay from disapproving Grandpa. She clearly wishes she could see more of him, but Dad’s keeping his distance. Dad asks if this guy she’s going to battle is really all that good looking, and at first she makes a sour face and shakes her head, then, “Well… he’s a little pretty, kind of like a girl.” HA.

The lead-up to the battle grows bigger than either of them wanted, but it’s out of their hands now. People start posting signs, departments choose sides… I love that what’s at stake is month-long slavery, because no matter who wins, it works to the story’s advantage. And it doesn’t hurt that they hate each other.

They both work their bands to the bone, dissatisfied to just play their normal repertoire, and feeling the pressure to win.

Seok-hyun finds out that the Big Show he’ll be directing (the university’s 100th anniversary show) has his ex Yoon-su slated to be the dance choreographer. He heads to her studio and finds her just after another fall.

She hears someone walk in and immediately assumes it’s Shin, telling him not to come around anymore. But Seok-hyun walks in to tell her not to do the show—that her skills aren’t up to par and that she should avoid being pitied by others. Damn.

She disregards him, and he bursts out, “How am I supposed to do a show with you?!” Clearly this is about your unresolved feelings, mister. She refuses to back off, and he swears at her like she’s a dude, something like “son of a bitch” or “asshole,” which is unusual unless he was a teacher or a director of hers at some point. (Adult-to-adult it’s gender specific and harsh, but from teacher-to-student it’s more gender neutral and more like “you rotten kid.” Um… I dunno why. It just is, in colloquial usage.) If she used to be a dancer and he was her director, that would explain it. Either that or he swears weirdly.

Shin arrives just after Seok-hyun leaves, and watches Yoon-su sink to the ground and cry. I do love his puppy crush on her which makes him a much more interesting character, despite the fact that the ballerina is mostly a downer. I mean, if you spend the first two episodes crying, how am I supposed to think of you as anything other than a wet blanket?

Kyu-won makes the mistake of telling Grandpa about the battle, which turns him into General Pansori. He forces her to practice night and day, basically turning her into a gayageum zombie, because now she’s got the pride of all Korean music riding on her servant-bet.

Seok-hyun agrees to direct the Big Show, but plans to upend the whole thing because what they’ve got planned is “no fun.” Heh, I love his directness. His sunbae tells him that he does have to cast Hee-joo though, because she’s the university president’s daughter. He doesn’t seem too keen on that.

It turns out that Hee-joo has something in common with Jun-hee – she’s always hungry too, but while his is metabolism-fueled, hers is image-conscious bulimia. Sad. And worse is the truth that it’s all too common with dancers. She overhears that the new director might go in a different direction for the show, and hears him talking about Kyu-won and the battle. Time for some recon on her competition.

Jun-hee tells his bandmates about the gukak professor who died from cancer the night of the concert, and Shin realizes why Kyu-won was so testy with him that day. I hope you feel like a heel. I can’t tell, but I’m going to assume that you do.

It’s Battle Time. Awwwww, yeah. The entrances are awesome, all western duel at high noon. Shin straps on his guitar, Kyu-won wields her gayageum, and they approach each other like they’re slinging guns.

A crowd has gathered and Seok-hyun adorably cheers Kyu-won on like a big dork, which officially seals my love for him. Yoon-su takes note of his behavior with a hairy eyeball, and Kyu-won awkwardly waves back at the very strange ajusshi. Heh.

On stage, Shin starts to apologize for the other day, but she doesn’t let him get very far, assuming he’s just scared he’ll lose. The battle is on.

The Stupid takes to the stage first and they wow the crowd, making the Wildflowers nervous. Kyu-won vows to do gukak proud, and gets a big cheer from Grandpa too. They play what starts out as a very traditional mellow piece but becomes an impressive display of string-chops to a catchy beat.

They’ve got the crowd… they build to the climax… and then Kyu-won breaks a string, bringing the whole ensemble to a halt. While I appreciate that it’s a dramatic moment, I don’t need The! Drama! of it all to be hammered into my skull like I’m incapable of understanding the significance. Relaaaaaaax.

They lose, of course, but Jun-hee bounces up to them, “Unnis! You were awesome! I’ve never heard anything like that before. I think I totally love you.” So cute. Bo-woon offers to play for him everyday, and he perks up when she offers to buy him food. Please pick her over the starving ballerina. I bet you she’s such a bitch because she’s always hungry. I mean, don’t people know being hungry makes you cranky?

Bo-woon is amazed as she watches Jun-hee devour his food and ask for more, remembering his alter ego at school eating the same way. She shakes her head no – it can’t be the same guy. Ha.

I love that everyone is so disbelieving that he’s one and the same. He had explained to his bandmates that he can only afford a few nice clothes, which he wears for concerts as fanservice. Heh. Yeah, but that doesn’t explain the idol hair or the guyliner now, does it?

He eats so much that eventually he outspends her wallet output, and they have to call for help. Kyu-won arrives and pays the bill, and Shin arrives just behind her. Jun-hee calls her an angel and then he takes Bo-woon home, leaving her awkwardly with Shin on the sidewalk.

She admits that she lost today, and he offers that she was good, and if her string hadn’t broken, the outcome might’ve been different. She agrees, which I love. He apologizes for not keeping his promise at the concert and says that he’s sorry about her professor too.

She explains that she knows it’s not directly his fault, but the circumstances… and he cuts her off to say that he gets it, no biggie. He tells her the reason that he couldn’t make the concert, and she believes him right away, which is a relief. I love a drama where misunderstandings get cleared up quickly.

He says that he’ll use her slave services without too much burden or guilt (gee thanks) and then asks which way she’s headed… “So I can go the other way.” HAhahaha. You’re randomly a crack-up when you want to be.

At school she attempts to hide, hoping that if he can’t find her, he can’t enslave her. That works for about half a day, until he nabs her phone so that they can exchange numbers, to the tune of jealous girls everywhere. Hee.

Shin’s mom gets a request from his father to see his son once before he dies. So either Shin’s from a first marriage, or an illegitimate child, and either way Dad has no presence in his life, due to Mom’s insistence against it. He seems to be dying from The Rock, as in living a hardcore lonely life, and it makes Mom scared that Shin’s going to follow in Degenerate Dad’s footsteps.

She asks noncommittally if Shin can’t quit guitar, but doesn’t really offer the real reason why and takes it off the table. She looks through pictures of the old days, when Shin’s dad was in a band… with Kyu-won’s dad?

Oh, well that makes more sense, if Dad really did have a rocker phase. Because the whole “You want to play Mozart? Get out of my house!” thing was just kind of silly. So if Kyu-won’s dad was also living somewhat unconventionally, it would explain Grandpa’s insistence on raising her himself.

Sigh with the our-dads-were-in-a-band-together thing. At least they’re not siblings? Er? Right?

Kyu-won’s dad suggests that she let him see his son at least once, for Shin’s sake. Interesting that she keeps in touch with her dad, but not his. The next day she decides to take Shin to see his father, under the guise of getting a guitar lesson from someone who was once in a famous band. (Mom can get away with that as a cover because she works for a music rag, so she’d clearly have the connections to do so anyway.)

He calls Kyu-won to attend class for him so she can get him through roll call, but of course she gets caught red-handed. Whoops.

Mom waits in the car and he gives her a smile and walks in, but once he turns away from her, his face darkens. Omo! Is that… narrative information I’m reading on your face? By jove, it’s a freakin’ miracle!

His face reveals that he knows much more about what he’s about to walk into than he let on. He must’ve been curious about bio dad before this, though clearly Mom is in the dark about how much he knows. He steels himself before going inside.

Neither of them says anything revealing their relationship, and Dad asks him if he knows how to play. Shin plays a song that he wrote, and then Dad picks up his guitar and plays along. I love that this moment is beautifully underplayed, but quite touching because it’s so simple.

Dad tells him, “The guitar and me. That’s my entire world,” and asks if he’ll come again. Shin looks down to see his hand shaking.

He comes home that day and turns what they played together into a song, and performs it at the club. Kyu-won comes with Bo-woon and as he plays, her face goes from skeptical…to surprised… and then moved.

Aw, you did it—you played music that tugged at her heart.

This drama lacks crispness in its cinematography, and it even feels a little like it was shot ten years ago. But I like the setup and the tone of the youth-melodrama. This is kind of what I wanted Mary Stayed Out All Night to be – an exploration of youth, music, indie vs. conformity, what adulthood means, etc. But that drama went to wackyville while this one seems like it’s the perfect answer to what I wanted, thematically.

And okay, I had pretty much written off Jung Yong-hwa as a cardboard box with a pretty face, and though he hasn’t TOTALLY changed my mind, I do see a glimmer of hope in his portrayal of Shin. He’s straining less, which is good, and I think that he’s doing a decent job playing the hot-and-cold guy, who is believably one character who’s nice at home and mean outside.

He’s still got miles and miles to go before I’m with him on the straight-up emoting, but this time I’m not actively seeing Black Hole instead of Actor. And he totally surprised me with his facial expressions that actually conveyed narrative information today. Yay for growth.

Song Chang-eui’s character Seok-hyun is the winner so far, because he’s interestingly written and brightly played, so it’s no wonder I’m totally falling for his cute interplay with Kyu-won. I think Park Shin-hye is best when she’s not trying to be cute (And I really fail to understand why cute is even an affectation for her, ’cause she just looks cute anyway, no effort needed).

So when she breaks into those moments of swearing at Shin (love) or sassing him around, I adore her. She’s incredibly easy to feel with, which is I think a lead actress’ main asset, because she pulls you into her emotional state. I’m actually hoping for more drama with her character, just to see her act well rather than rest on her cute laurels.

But the bickery hatred? I’m all about that. I hope they hate each other for at least half the run or more. Oh yeah.

If you don't have any expectations, this is a pretty decent escapism-type drama. You're not going to get bowled over by the storyline and it's cutesy enough as a reason to watch. However, if you're looking for something with deeper meaning and plot, this drama is NOT it. For all it's worth, I really like PSH and I hope that for the next project, she'll try to avoid the cutesy stuff and try for more melodramatic stuff. I think she'd be up for it.

Tons of gratitude to you, girlfriday!I went to other one recap, but she negative about this one( no offense to her) but i think she was too prejudice cos of the director. She definitely does not like the director. I love the cast, the color tone of the drama and the music!!!! the fusion of old and new....DEABAK!!!!!!

Now, because of this drama, I got to know Korea's traditional instruments and music, it's really good to hear.....Great work PD!

By the way, I'm really into CN blue's music......now I'm hearing Yonghwa's one composition.....hope to hear more. Great OST!!!!!!!

Haven't watched it yet....waiting for the subs, but I'm going to stay with this one. Can't resist the cold mean jerk with the soft heart scenario, despite it being played zillions of times in kor dramas. There's something warm and breezy and fresh and happy about campus dramas. That was one of the reasons I loved Playful Kiss though it got panned by many ppl. Yong Hwa reminds me of my uni days and my No. 1 crush LOL (I had close to a hundred crushes). He was also cold and icy and gradually thawed after we got to know each other. Sad to say, he barely made it with his grades...yup, he was the WORST student of his graduating class that year. Nothing kills love as fast as a string of E's. Still, he was beautiful....ahhh, young loveeee.....

Thank you for the recap. I also didn't connect this show with that other title - what I will call the worst youth-rock oriented title ever. EVER!

JYH is beautiful in a "Let's just put on some music and watch him" way. I could just watch him all day. Actually, I may have actually spent literally a day watching him once after finishing YAB. Between the Music Core types of shows, or the taping of radio appearances, I very happily skipped around the net my eyes glued to all things CN Blue and PYH.

So when this show was announced, I thought, I could watch that, or, I WILL watch that.

Your review, Girl Friday, of JYH gives me hope. Where I see a blank wall with nothing buy "PWETTY" written on it, you see potentially human "emotions." Yes, in the right hands, JYH could do fine. [insert "that's what she said" here] He absolutely has to get better, or this show dies though. Especially if they are going towards melo, not cute.

I also don't understand why we have to sit through PSH flopping around like a muppet when KY is an almost grown woman who is a serious musician. STOP.THAT.NOW.
The best scenes were when she pitched her voice low and growled. I believe that version of KY. I am hoping the small SK audience is vocal enough for the writing/directing crew put more of that on screen.

The music is soooooo good. I have watched a lot of sageuks where the characters play the olde tyme instrumentes and I never thought they could pull off Carmen. I am really hoping we here more and more of that. The girls really looked like there were playing, too.

Thanks for the recap, particularly the song ( untitled ??) by Jung Yong Hwa. I did not know he was such a good singer when I watched "You are Beautiful".

His singing catches me. I will download that to my i phone so as to listen anytime.

Okay! I have to agree that JunHee character is cute and lovable but sometimes I feel it can get too much. And though I like him right now if this continues til the end of the drama he will get on my nerves.

As of now I am liking him and his interaction with Bo Woon more that with Hee Jo though Jun Hee and Hee Jo looks cute too.

Okay!!! Sorry for discussing the supporting cast but just wanted to put it out there.

I love the bickering of KyuWon and Shin too. JYH has improved a lot but still like everyone I think there is room for more.

My fave scene will have to be the scene with Shin and his dad. I loved that so much.

After Secret Garden, none of the dramas has caught my fancy.

Hence, what I've done was to watch an older drama called "Spring Days". It has a bit of everything in addition to a stellar casting.

Thanks to the recaps, I think I'll enjoy watching YFFM. Park Shin Hye is a breath of fresh air.

I am LOVING this drama already. I can't wait for the story to unfold and for the enjoyment this drama will (I am sure) bring for weeks to come. For me, the measure of a good drama or of a good episode is given by whether or not I would want to/feel like rewatching the episode the minute it has finished and whether upon rewatch I would still feel it fresh, interesting and engaging. And minor issues aside(which will probably be worked out within the next episodes), this show has totally been doing that for me. I feel like rewatching the episodes as soon as they are done playing, I feel like finding out more about the characters and I find myself hoping for next week to come so that I could get to spend more time in the universe the show has presented, in the company of these characters. And that is no mean feat just two episodes into the show.

I have to agree with Bizer and Wootwoot there is something compelling about Lee Shin. He feels like a character you think you know and then you realize that he ia alltogether someone else. There is a mystery to him and the fighting is absolutely perfect!

This drama actually has something to say and that is a welcome change from most youth based dramas out there.

I am so excited for this drama b/c atlast YH and Shin Hye will end up together. I was disappointed with the previous drama YH was on, he got rejected by the female lead. And now YH is the lead actor. YH JJANG! :-)

[SPOILER ALERT DO NOT READ IF NOT FINISH READING RECAP OR HAVE NOT SEEN EPISODE 1&2]
I loved the part (you didn't recap it) at the bus stop when
Kyu-won and her friend Bo-Woon were sitting there and sees Shin on his bike with his sister (which the girls don't know about "yet.") and are thinking "HE'S DATING A MINOR?!?!" xD Classic. BUT then Shin & his little sister reverse back (probably hearing that) on his bike and his little sister is like who are they? And he reply's in most "Shin" way he can by saying "my slave" xD Also I'm guessing little sister is following big brother's footsteps by saying "let's leave those ugly girls." (episode he said "I don't like ugly girls."

Eventhough i'm Shin Hye's fan, and i support Yh cause he was in yab, and he's a good singer, i wasn't sure about this drama. The first episode was not compelling for me..i only loved the part where she fell and it seemed as if she were pulling him by his leg. But the rest of the episode was average...hw the second one is great...there're some things i want them to include, maybe more interaction among the leads, or a plot that makes you feel intrigued not only by the romance but for more realistic things, competitions, projects, etc.

I will keep watching the drama and i hope it gets better, and better...btw i loveeeeed yH voice and interpretation by the end of the show....awesome!!!

Thank you for the recap! I am happy that many of your readers are willing to give Heartstrings a chance and not to quit just because of 2 episodes. Watching the 1st episode some scene really made me kinda wonder why there is shaking which i thought at first was the problem with my internet service but later finding out its the camera . All is forgotten when I saw the nice scenery and color palette used which gives you the feeling of light, fresh warm feeling. Also the campus scenes reminds me of my old college days which i now miss because of the show. There's no going around in circle but the star of this show is really Park shin hye. The people are right in saying she doesnt have to act cute because she is already naturally cute but that is all forgotten when she delivers her line with full control that commands attention so no choice but to admire her. I cant wait for the two lead to fall in love but there is something going on with the professor and shin hye so thats something to watch. The 2nd episode introduced somewhat how the characters are related so im getting my tissue ready but i know plenty of smiles is also coming. This episode showed us also how awesome of a singer Yong hwa is. The last song was sang with full emotion that for some reason I got tangled with the feelings of Shin hye for Yong hwa. Awesome moment! I think this is the introduction of the love that will transpire between these two in the upcoming show.

The person that said that You're Beautiful did badly in Korea was correct in stating that but the show created an enormous fan base around the world that made it so popular until now which i feel the vibe of this show is similar that you want to rewatch it again after your finished. I can say that im looking forward to the next episode and hope the ratings improve by garnering more viewers. Also its a plus that the director used traditional music/tradional instuments which we hardly see these days.

I didn't get the second-lead syndrome with this couple in YAB, neither I feel the chemistry between the main lead.

To be perfectly honest, Hong sisters' style didn't do these young actors the most favor. I think the style here is much more suitable for Jung Yong-hwa and Park Shin-hye.

Btw, I know it's unfair but it makes a whole world different when a singer sings instead of an actor. I like JGS but I did not like his singing, not b/c it's bad, but b/c it didn't have the feel into it.

guys, don't be get so intimidated with city hunter.. lee min ho is lee min ho. we all knew that. but the thing here is that, this series, well just started. a lot of t.v. goers don't watch series during their pilot weeks because the on-going series are better in terms of "current storyline". to elaborate, if you're watching o let us say you're addicting to a drama, would you dare not to watch one episode in exchange for a pilot episode drama? ..... and of course, it may not rate as city hunter, but i bet, this series will be spreading around the world too because of internet.

i agree to both jam and greenhouse..this drama may not have good ratings in Korea but im sure it will be a craze internationally like YAB not only because of shinhye and YH's team up but because of the good music....its unfair to compare it with CH because they have different genre and CH started so much ahead, so it has already captured a solid viewership...

although i feel bad about the ratings of this drama, as an international fan of PSH and YAB, i will continue to watch it because as most of you here says, this drama is a " breath of fresh air" ..its different from usually angst filled drama (which i hate) ...it relaxes me so much not only because of the youthful characters but also because of the music, nice songs, fusion of traditional and modern korean instruments...

so, lets support HS

This has turned my expectations, grown from You're Beautiful, upside down.

I think Yong Hwa is doing a good job conveying the cool guy ill at ease with his popularity but with warmth for sister and friends and conflicted emotions around parents and love interest. I was uncertain he could do this after his Shin Woo portrayal. So yea Yong Hwa!

But Shin Hye is driving me crazy - mugging for the camera and overacting at times. Also the shuffling running and so on. I thought, based on Go Mi Nam, which is the only other thing I had seen her in, she must be a really good actress as good comedy is hard to pull off. But she doesn't seem to have much range ore depth here (yet?). Perhaps she will settle - it might be the directing, I guess.

Loving both the applied music and the traditional music. The trad instruments are fascinating and I assume grandpa's comments on the components of the music are correct (seasons, yin and yang, etc)? So I will learn a lot over the series.

I will watch but I will not be getting up at 3am to catch the first eng subs posted as I have done for City Hunter!

I rewatched the first two episodes with eng subs this time and I find myself enjoying and appreciating it more the second time around. I continue to love the music and the overall ambience of the drama. the story so far is a little too cheesy for my liking but has the potential to be better; please PLEASE don't throw fauxcest at us.

since I am awfully biased when it comes to PSH and JYH, I am willing to overlook their respective overacting and underacting. Plus I am loving the tension between them and I agree that they should have more love/hate-fulled bickering in the future episodes. :D

Also, can someone please fire the camera-man or at least get a better camera??? There were so many moments where I wish it would just STOP SHAKING. if it continues on like that I am going to end up with an epileptic disorder.

Thanks for the recaps, ladies! This drama is not on my radar. Tried its first episode and it was...meh. Just like Miss Ripley, it'll just be a "recap read only" drama for me. Hehehehehee... Some dramas come alive way better through your writing. That goes to show how much of amazing writers you ladies are! ^_^

Yay! I hope it bets better form here on out! Not that it's bad, I just want it to be really good.
Also is it wrong that a big part in watching this show is an excuse to stare at Jung Young-hwa for an hour? Thoughts?

Funny Bunny, I'm with you on this one. This drama really is my excuse to stare at Yonghwa. Doesn't hurt that this guy is mighty talented, sings great and has improved in his acting.

Me too. I can just stare and listen to him sing all day long. He can ignore me but let me just stare at him. I wish I was his little sister in the series, she gets to hug him everytime she rides his bike. Or I can be his mic when he sings. kekeke

Oh my, I am LOVING this drama! Don't think I have been this excited over any first two episodes since Secret Garden.

And javabeans' recaps are blowing it out of the water, total icing on the cake for me!! "Jung Yong-hwa as a cardboard box with a pretty face.... Bwahahaha!! There are so many scenes where some sort of reaction is called for on his part, the camera cuts to his face and it's completely...blank. Not even an eyebrow flicker. At moments like this, I think man, Jang Geun Suk would have emoted the hell out of this. But Jung Yong-hwa is alot better here than in You're Beautiful...Shin's deadpan character probably helps too and he's improving slowly. I hope for better things as the series progresses.

And how I love Park Shin Hye. She and Jung So Min have cornered the market for this sort of spunky, cute yet talented actress role. I still occasionally fall into the trap of thinking I'm watching Yoon Eun Hye (this happened to me all the way during You're Beautiful thanks to Coffee Prince) but it helps she's not the sans make up, constantly runny nosed Mi Nyeul with a bad haircut. Occasionally she flashes an expression which reminds me of the beautiful ingenue she was in Stairway to Heaven, and I really regret that her managers decided to let her go down the "pleasant girl next door" rather than glammed up young starlet route. I don't find her to be overacting but if she is, it's probably in compensation for JungBox.

holy frickin... just- aahh... this drama is so happy making! i've been looking forward to it for far too long. As much as i can judge with only 2 episodes i'd say is definitely better than i ever hoped it would be, and i really hope it will continue to be so freakin awesome. I'm one of those people that really likes CNBlue, and despite JYH's questionable acting skills in YAB, I totally felt for him, so this drama is like my fangirl dream. I'm overjoyed with how much actual music is in the drama :D for a drama about music it's good to see. And he's a very talented song writer, so I'm glad they're putting his skills to good use (and homg I love his voice x_x)... So basically I'm a huge JYH fan and therefore a little biased, sorry...

but aside from the awesomeness that is JYH and the fantastic banter/tension/set up between the two leads, I realized that I freakin adore drummer boy! he's just tooooo precious! (but i think his character has a tapeworm or something dayum!) can he please be in every scene?

ps. please don't let them be related in any way. That's probably the only thing this drama could do to make me hate it. I thought for a second they were siblings and I just about clawed my eyes out on the spot. T____T
