Yoon Kye-sang: “Wishing love for everyone…crushes are heartbreaking!”

[New guest blogger alert! We here at Dramabeans are always incredibly appreciative of everyone who’s given us their time and efforts, whether it be guesting for recaps, newsy posts, or providing goodies like this one. Thanks to sassychef — we hope to be seeing more of you around these parts! –javabeans]

The “Perfect Man” is back! For an interview, that is… The dynamic actor, who portrays the sweet and perfect Yoon Pil-Joo (Best Love) and the mysterious Poongsan (Poongsan, formerly Phungsan Dog) who crosses the dangerous border between the North and South Korea as a courier for hire, is the one and only Yoon Kye-Sang (Who Are You?, The Moonlight of Seoul, Best Love), who seems pretty darn close to perfect to me.

In an interview conducted by Money Today Star News back on June 14th, just as Best Love was heading to its finish, the star revealed answers to the many questions his fans wanted to know.

On one side we have an oriental medicine doctor who suffers from an unrequited love for Gu Ae-jung (Gong Hyo-Jin), a celeb who’s seen better days of her fame on the ever popular twice-weekly MBC drama, Best Love. On the flip side, there’s the dark and gritty film about a man that barely ever utters a word as he crosses North and South Korea’s dangerous borders as a courier. If Yoon Pil-joo is the perfect man within a fantasy, then Poongsan is the rough masculine manly man…you can say that Yoon Kye-sang is the perfect blend of both. So let’s dig a little deeper to see what Team Pil-joo’s Yoon Kye-sang is made of!

Poongsan has recently opened…It must have brought back a lot of memories of the tough filming conditions for you.

I very much enjoyed watching it on screen. Even though I was in the movie, once I saw the film as a whole, it made me realize yet again just how special this film is…also that the director is a genius. The movie staff was so passionate about the movie that it made me work even harder. Everyone including the staff and the actors gave their all for this film.

There seems to be a lot of anticipation and expectation for this movie.

I really hope it does well. My wish for the success of this film seems to be greater than usual. The staff worked so hard. But as the fate would have it, the robots of Transformers seem to have taken over at the box office… Darn those robots… (chuckle)

We can all see how hard the filming must have been. We can even see the steam rising off the bodies in the film!

Whew…it really was tough. I’m glad that the harshness shows through. I can’t even describe how cold it really was!

Emotionally speaking, it couldn’t have been easy. Especially without speaking any words.

I remember how difficult it was at times. The driving scene with In-ok was especially hard. Everyone is talking around me, and my character just watches the dialogue around him without uttering a word. I was to convey all my thoughts just through my expressions… Luckily the actors I was working with were so good that we were able to get through the scene. Thank goodness.

Poongsan and Best Love couldn’t be more different from one another.

I was determined to do Poongsan… While shooting Road No. 1, I was able to play a masculine character. Many viewers didn’t seem to know I could play such roles. This made me want to do another project where I can show everyone I can play those type of characters too when Poongsan came along. I knew Best Love would be more mainstream. I thought to myself that it may not be the best to typecast myself as the artist that only got involved in the artistic indie films. In my opinion, it is so much better to broaden your scope of work and also to work on some projects that can garner you much love of your respected fans.

It looks like you did achieve that from Best Love.

I was lucky that the show worked out so well for me..It makes me very happy.

If you had to pick, would you say you’re more similar to Yoon Pil-joo or Poongsan?

I would probably be more like Poongsan than the other…but that’s not to say that I’m not like Pil-joo. There’s definitely some of him in me. At first, it was a little difficult to play Pil-joo because he seemed so dull in comparison to Dokko Jin. So I started to let more of Yoon Kye-sang come through the character, and it seemed to work…and I got to become more familiar and comfortable playing the character.

There seems to be a rivalry between Team Dokko and Team Pil-joo.

I seem to be surrounded by Team Pil-joo. My sister and the married women seem to like Pil-joo better, so I’m getting the support…(chuckle)

What do you wish for the ending of Best Love?

I hope everyone finds their own love. I really dislike sad endings in dramas. For example…the ending in What happens in Bali brought me many sleepless nights. So that can’t happen. We need to give hope to the viewers out there with a great ending. Also, one-sided love is just too hard. Especially having three projects in a row having to portray that…it’s not even fun anymore… (chuckle).

As Yoon Kye-Sang, who would you have picked between Kang Seri and Gu Ae-jung?

Hmm… Gu Ae-jung’s draw is that she is brimming with common sense — in reality as well as in character. She has a lot of life experience and because she’s been hurt in the past herself, she knows how to care for others. Kang Seri on the other hand is so adorable. Even though she does some unsavory things, her adorableness pulls her through. I’m in a tough spot so I can’t pick. I don’t want to die from choosing one over the other… (laugh).

Director Kim Ki-dok sang your praises in a letter.

I can only bow my head in gratitude. He gave me so much support. Even when we wrapped the film, he said those kind words to me and I was so touched. I’ve admired his work such as Bad Guy since I was in high school, so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to have worked with him.

There seems to be a lot of focus on you as an actor these days.

I don’t really know about any of that. I’ve only been working on projects that I thought were great and enjoyed working on. The only thing I know to do now is to keep looking for great projects to work on and to show everyone good work that they can enjoy. To be honest, since My 19-Year-Old Sister-In-Law, Best Love is the first well-received drama I’ve been a part of. I want to show the audiences more and more of my work that they will hopefully love. I’ve always said the same thing in all the interviews I’ve done. That is to become an actor. I feel like I’m beating the dead horse with that statement. But it is the truth. I even got made fun of by a director for repeating those words so many times. I want to be able to look back 10 to 20 years from now and be proud of the work I’ve done as an actor.

Don’t worry, Yoon Kye-sang, I have a feeling you will have plenty of fans now to cheer you on any future projects–and who knows? With all your Team Pil-joo members cheering you on, you’ll get the girl this time!

Do you mean he's "shin gue wha"? (please excuse the terrible romanization.lol) I think he is the perfect man as Pil-joo, and I loved him in Who Are You, but even my love for Yoon Kye-sang could not bring me to enjoy him in Triple.

I saw an old clip of YKS (late teens or early twenties) on YouTube where he was taking care of a toddler and he seemed a really, genuinely great guy. I would love for my daughters to marry a man like him.

YKS is in High Kick 3... Hurray! Can't wait.

He needs some more mainstream roles to put in on the A list. He's a very good, versatile actor. He seems so nice.

I was on Team Pil Joo, but you just can't win against Dokko Jin in the picture. Sniff....

His portrayal and character of Yoon Pil-joo in Best Love has made me a victim of the Second-Lead Syndrome for the first time (okay, Won Bin in Autumn in my Heart was the first but I still rooted for Song Seung-heon's character which is a surprise for me because now I like the former more than the latter. it's probably because I was younger back then, and that was my first Korean drama).

I've been watching dramas for almost 10 years now, and really, the whole time I was watching Best Love, I was thinking that Ae-jung should've ended up with Pil-joo. Or if she really was meant for Jin, then I wished Pil-joo all the happiness because his heartbreak was too much for me in the show.

Anyway, thank you for this post! We appreciate it.

And for the record, if I'm in Korea right now I would rather watch his film than Transformers. I was so disappointed with the second film due to its plot holes that I lost interest in this franchise.

Another thing, his first project that I saw was "Lovers of 6 years" or "6 years in love" with Kim Ha-neul. I'm not gonna say it's a great movie, but after seeing it I became interested in it once again because their characters felt so real.

I saw the latest transformers movie only because my young and very cute nephews asked me so winningly, and the only thing I could think of while sitting through the more than two-and-a-half(!)-long boring movie was: I have so many episodes of awesome k-dramas I could be watching!

OMG, I was just fantasizing thinking about YKS! I'm in the process of rewatching much of Who Are You?-- the first time I watched it, I thought he was cute and funny (and a great actor), but I didn't really go into fangirl mode. Then I met Pil Joo, and let's just say my fangirl lightbulb got turned on. I think it was very savvy of him to take on Poongsan after doing Best Love, because he really does have terrific range and as they say, “If you've got it, flaunt it.”

Thanks so much for the post and for stepping up to the plate as a guest-blogger, Sassychef. (BTW, your handle makes you sound interesting and makes me wonder what your specialty is!) Dramabeans is such a remarkable site (especially given that it's not a commercial enterprise), and I sometimes worry that JB and GF are trying to do too much by themselves. More and more addicts are joining the club all the time, and we're a pretty voracious bunch. (I can only imagine the pandemonium that would ensue if JB and GF announced that they were gonna take a vacation and that DB would be shut down for the next two weeks!) Anyway, I've been thinking lately that it'd be a good idea to have some guest bloggers help out more-- not just with recaps, but with the newsy posts as well-- and then you showed up! So, yay for you, yay for DB's other guest-bloggers, and yay for JB and GF getting a day off now and again (hopefully).

lol at his comment about What Happened in Bali. So now I know he watches kdramas!

It was a really smart move of him to take on the Pil-joo role. I think almost all actors who play the Hong Sisters secondary-male-leads gain a triple-boost of popularity.

I was a Team Pil-joo too! It's just that I was rooting for Dokogin more for the girl. I guess I'm one of those suckers for funny, bad boys. And I don't think Best Love was his only best drama to date. I think he also did an outstanding performance in Who Are You? I loved his character on that one. I think he should stick more to comedy. I don't like seeing him dull and sad and angry given his gorgeous bod and face. Love love love YKS! Fighting!^_^

I agree. I really don't think he gets enough credit for the acting he did in "Who Are You?" - I remember being incredibly impressed with how well he did playing a character possed by another character trying - hilariously - to pretend to be the first character. Then he was character A pretending to be character B as character A pretending to be character B...it all worked so well, I've watched that show twice and it's one of my favorites.

To be superficial, though, I must admit sometimes I find his ears distracting - they are such a unique shape, like elf ears. I can't ever forget I'm watching YKS because of those ears...

WHO are you made me notice & admire YKS. I became a fan since then. Wow! He looks good in uniform in Road No. 1 & really like that too.
Look forward to see more dramas of YKS as the leading man.

This showed me how smart Yoon Kye Sang really is. He knew that Best Love would give him that mainstream popularity, and yet he does indie roles because he wants to be recognized as an actor. I'm assuming that he wants to shed that idol image, which I'm pretty sure is gone.

And it's funny that it's been mentioned on this blog at how ordinary 2nd lead males are in Hong sister dramas, and YKS says that he brought a bit of himself to make Pil-joo stand out. I love the fact that he's so hard-working and cute. Yoon Kye-sang fighting!! :D

Im doing fine, my friend. Thanks! And you? How's the media interest there in UK with the Norway terror attacks? Really shocking. I saw in CNN how the streets near Oslo's courts are filled with int'l media esp from all over Europe. Even the father of the gunman was so horrified by what his son has done. Still the Norwegian people remain as peaceful and graceful through out all of the twin attacks.

I'm glad things are turning out better for him. Every time I see his face plastered somewhere in reference to BL, I recall an awkward interview betwn him, CSW, and GHJ where CSW blurts out telling YKS stop being loyal to MBC and venture other stations for better roles after bearing his survival from low ratings in Road No. 1. YKS's reaction was fist pounding his director's arm chair and pulling his head low. It was so funny.

I only watched TRIPLE for the male actors. They were all favourites of mine. The women were extraneous and those actresses were not in the least bit attractive or interesting. that is why someone said they did not like Yoon Kye Sang in that drama. He at least should have had an easy on the eye women to obsess over.!!!
Isn't he married with a few children by the way. He would make a great father. He was so good no matter which role he played in any drama. I hope good things are in store for him.

Do not understand why this drama was not a hit. It's certainly worth watching than Kim Tak Gu which there were too many screaming and shouting, irritating ...... Road number one is a drama showing the emotion, love, care, and relationship between human that are long forgotten in the current competitive world. lots of men tears were shown in this drama.....it's shown the pain and fear of losing theirlife and loved one. I certainly voted thus drama as the best I have ever watched.
