A Gathering of Writers to Say Thank You

Introduction

Unbeknownst to Javabeans or Girlfriday, many of the magical creatures in k-dramaland gathered together in a secluded glen within the kingdom of Dramabeans, long after the fey mistresses of the kingdom had gone to bed. They had known for some time that Dramabeans was nearing its 5,000th post (!!), and they racked their brains to come up with a suitable way to say thank you to celebrate the occasion.

For certain, were it not for Javabeans and Girlfriday, many of these creatures would be hanging out on tough street corners, or getting into dramas that no self-respecting elf or gnome should watch. How to thank the lifegivers of Dramabeans for providing so much entertainment, knowledge, heart, community and love? With that in mind, may I present the well-wishes and appreciation from the new and the old: a panoply of heartfelt congratulations for Post no. 5,000!

My Beautiful Love Story With Dramabeans – by gummimochi

My story began back in 2007 when I was watching Coffee Prince. I was searching the internet to hunt down the Coffee Prince soundtrack and ‘lo and behold – I found it: a hidden cave of wonders . Without intending to stay, I started to read the drama recaps and instantly became hooked! Here was a place where someone would give her frank two cents, sharing in my obsession with Korean entertainment in a smart, witty, and hilarious manner. Javabeans’ and Girlfriday’s opinions became the gold standard of my K-drama future: which drama I would watch next and the ones I would recommend to friends. I break into a wide smile and my heart races whenever a new post goes up.

Dramabeans is so much more than a simple recap & entertainment site to me – it inspired me to start writing about what I love. It’s been only a few months so far, but I am so honored to be a part of a team of such talented writers. Congratulations Dramabeans on reaching 5,000 posts and counting!

An Excuse to Fawn Over Dramabeans – by kaedejun

I stumbled upon the site way back when it was under a different URL (javabeans.wordpress.com) and had to be ported over to dramabeans.com. I found the site right when I was at the peak of my obsession. (Have I peaked already? Am I still peaking?) But I wasn’t hooked to this site… until the recaps for Coffee Prince.

After the fanaticism of You’re Beautiful, I begged, pleaded, wailed on scuffed knees (ok, I emailed – but that’s not dramatic) to write the recaps for the drama IRIS. Wow Javabeans must have been crazy to entrust me with that. Sometimes I still wonder what she was thinking to even let me continue writing on her site!

So to the reasons why I love Dramabeans: it provides a 24/7 forum for interesting discussion on actors and dramas both on and off the set, inspiring venomous hatred and passionate ardor from fans around the world to fuel the long debates. It’s a mover-and-a-shaker; and without a doubt, Javabeans and Girlfriday are profoundly influential in the drama-watching world.

Every day, Javabeans and Girlfriday churn out well-written content one after another with frankness, insight, and well-founded opinions that you are free to agree or disagree with – but you can’t deny it’s made you curious about dramas or issues you never knew about before. The most important reason why I love Dramabeans? It’s because it wouldn’t be ‘dramabeans’ without Javabeans and Girlfriday. I toast to you gals a hefty cup of makgulli! One shot!

You’ve Only Just Begun – by sassychef

You know those “Ah-ha!” moments you have once in awhile? Well, discovering Dramabeans was one of those moments for me. My impatient nature (which I’m trying to work on, by the way) couldn’t wait for the next episode of Secret Garden, so I searched and searched online to see if anyone could feed my addiction on what to be expected. That’s when I came upon this little goldmine, and thus began my love affair with Dramabeans.

Not only was I able to find a place where I can find cache of goodies to put in my queue for further drama pleasure, but the posts were written in a sharp, witty and at times snarky ways that I loved! (I mean, come on! Girlfriday naming Ha Ji-won (playing Hyun Bin’s role) Joo-wanda. Joo-wanda!! LOL! How could I not come back for more??) Javabeans’ and Girlfriday’s love of drama and writing has led to creating a dynamic site that so many of us has come to love and cherish. Having had the honor and pleasure to become a part of this incredible team has been a fantastic journey so far, and can’t wait to be a part of the next 5,000 posts. Congratulations Dramabeans, and we love you!! xoxo

Congratulations To Dramabeans! – by Thunderbolt

Wow, 5,000? I still remember the first Dramabeans post like it was yesterday. (That one resonated with me because I’ve always been keenly interested in any discussion on fansubs. Incidentally, I love Javabeans for the many times she has stood up for fansubbers.) And in three short months the blog will celebrate its 5th anniversary!

I came to Dramabeans via the Dal-Ja’s Spring recaps that Javabeans first posted on Soompi. The recaps were so witty and well written I was floored. Over the years, I have grown to love many things about the site. The breadth and depth of the writing. The humor. The goodies that you share (all those songs!) and the surprises that you spring (girlfriday! podcasts! Santa!).

I love that the posts can be serious but also silly, and that there’s no such thing as too much squee-ing. I love the occasional catfights, too. (Bora must die! Why I like Jang Nara!) You taught me that not everything is newsworthy, but that which is worth writing about should be written with heart and commitment. You make me proud to be a kdrama addict. Happy 5,000 posts, Javabeans and Girlfriday!

Onward Ho! – by Dahee Fanel

If my goldfish memory serves me correctly, I first encountered Javabeans on the Dal-Ja’s Spring thread over at Soompi in 2007. She was smart and witty and apparently a coffee addict, so of course I liked her and her insightful contributions to the thread right away. Before long, she was posting recaps of the show in the thread. I read them even though I don’t, and didn’t, need summaries of a show to understand what was going on, thanks to my (sometimes) useful fluency in Korean. I read them and loved them. And then when I found out that she had a blog, I went there and read every single post. That was the beginning.

Dramabeans has gone through a lot over the years. As a cheering bystander, I’ve watched it wax and grow from a little blog that housed JB’s drama addictions, to the K-drama powerhouse it is today. There was a time when there weren’t many (or any, rather) English-language blogs on Korean dramas, just like there was a time when we had to rent tapes from Korean video rental stores to watch the dramas that we love, and had no one to discuss them with online. (Oh the loneliness of those days!) The times have changed, and now all us K-drama fans can gather and debate, growl and squee to our hearts’ contents. Dramabeans has become one of the most precious of these gathering places.

What I love about Dramabeans is its passion. The passion for Korean dramas, movies, actors/actresses, variety shows, and Korean culture in general. That passion, that love and commitment, seeps through every single word in every single blog post, and it has since the very beginning. This is how dramas should be watched. This is how they should be written about. With love, respect, humour, and intelligence. Dramabeans, through the magic fingers of Javabeans and Girlfriday, has done this for 5,000 posts. Here’s to 5 gazillion more. Congratulations!!

Two Truths – by samsooki

I’ll let you in on two truths to k-dramaland. The first seems axiomatic but really isn’t: whether one is a prince or a pauper, on the inside we are all the same. This is the basis of the magic that keeps us so enthralled: that all of us are equal, only differentiated by the extent of our pluckiness! Yet stepping back, this truth helps only a little in understanding the universe. For true exploration, a trustworthy guide is a must, as k-dramaland is a very big place. And dramabeans has been that wonderful guide, an orphic counselor that weaves analysis and deconstruction with passion and wit. And more! With its open commentary style, dramabeans has also developed a tight-knit community whose warmth and tolerance for newbies has seen its numbers multiply by a magnitude – and isn’t it true that samsooki himself was forged in the crucible of an open thread?

The other truth is that we tend to live entire lifetimes through each drama series, gaining cherished memories of our favorite characters along the way. As each series ends and others begin, even now, how many lifetimes has the dramabeans community all shared together, and how many memories have become so cherished? All thanks to Javabeans and Girlfriday, I can’t imagine a better place to be, lifetime after lifetime, learning and sharing, and laughing and crying with everyone here.

*******

And with those parting thoughts, the magical creatures bade each other a good night. With a nod and a cheery wave, each creature sent a heart-felt thanks toward Castle Dramabeans and then disappeared back into the mists of k-dramaland – to rest, work, sleep or play. It would not do at all to dawdle; after all, there are always more things to do in k-dramaland.

Congrats on 5,000 posts JB, GF, and all the contributors!

I've been here post-Coffee Prince, maybe around 2008? This site was what firmly entrenched my love of Kdramas when I was doing a balance act between Korean and Japanese dramas. I can't get enough of all the information and able to read or occasionally go gaga over tidbits. It's really crazy how this site feels so cozy so I never really thought of it as so huge.

So a huge 축하 해요 (if translate google got that right) and here's to another 5,000 posts and beyond!

Dear Javabeans and GirlFriday

Words can't express my thanks and gratitude to you girls for the daily k-feeds. Your blog has always and will remain the very first site I turn to every single day when having my downtime moment. Let's share another 5,000 posts and see if there is any drastic shift in k-dramaland.

Thank you!

Cute! Happy 5,000th!

I've been using dramabeans for years to find shows and to make sense of the nuances I couldn't get from translations by themselves. I fell in love with Korean Dramas even more (and from there, South Korea in general) because of this site, and it turned in a love of Korean culture and art. Now I'm planning on traveling and interning in Seoul and Busan, and dramabeans has played a small part in cultivating my interests to do this. So thanks Javabeans! You've helped inspire my interests by writing about yours!

And Girlfriday, your witty comments and exclamations are the perfect finish to watching a drama. So congrats on being a genious, it is appreciated.

Cheers!

Congrats. I discovered this blog via the craziness that was You Are Beautiful, and although I didn't finish watching the drama because it got angsty in ways I hated, I continued reading the recaps. I fell in love with what I could learn here, and I hope I could continue to learn. May the awesomeness continue. Thank you jb and girlfriday. And thank you to the many guest bloggers.

Happy 5,000th! Its been a real pleasure to read and come to this site, several times a day, and to share this newfound love I had for k-dramas with other people like me!

I found the site when one of links to an episode of Hong Gil Dong was broken and I couldn't find a decent link anywhere. Lo and behold, I discovered this site!

Congratulations! Love you guys! Love this site. I first came here a little over a year ago while I was watching My Girlfriend is a Gumiho on Viki. It wasn't my first drama (my fourth), but it was the first drama I was watching while it was airing and I enjoyed it so much especially with your fantastic and amazingly funny recaps.

I love coming to this site everyday.

Even though subs are great, there's always stuff that I miss, not knowing all the nuances of the Korean language and culture. You guys help me to understand more fully, and enjoy the shows I watch even more.

Thanks so much for 5,000 posts of awesomeness!!

I stumbled upon DB by accident during the Boys Over Flower fever and remember leaving a comment asking to use a screencap hahaha. back then DB seemed to be of a smaller crowd but my oh my, 2 years later (at least for me) it really has obviously grown (+ GF! how I love thee :p).

Thanks for the constant sense of humor, recaps, occasional snarks and really, just mad-awesome writing!! More power to you guys in reaching the next milestone!

Congratulation! This site has been my Kdrama home for almost a year; it's no joke that I check it at least four or five times a day to see what's new.

The recaps have helped me to understand Kdramas at a level I never would have reached without them. Nuances, inside jokes, cultural issues and traditions - my Kdrama experience is richer because of this site.

Thank you javabeans & girlfriday (and all the guest recappers as well)! Here's to another 5000 posts and more!

You know how in K-dramas, when one character is shocked by another character's actions, frequently they'll ask “Are you even human?”... well, I often find myself wondering if JB and GF are really human. It just doesn't seem humanly possible to me to be able to consistently produce work of such high calibre at lightening-fast speed, handle all of the BTS stuff necessary to keep DB going, and to do so every single day of the year, year after year. I think of JB and GF as the Dynamic Duo-- partly because of the obvious synergy that exists between them, partly because of the heroic contributions that they've made, bettering the lives of K-drama lovers around the world, but also because of their seemingly suprahuman abilities. I don't know how they do it, but I'm damned grateful that they do.

Thank you samsooki, gummimochi, kaedejun, sassychef, Thunderbolt, and Dahee Fanel for all that you have contributed to DB, and for this well-deserved tribute to JB and GF.

Long live DB!

Omona!!!! 5000th?!?!

Dear Javabeans/Girl Friday,

Thank you so much for feeding my kdrama addiction. I started out a lurker, greedily consuming the recaps and vocally arguing/cheering some of my favorite characters.

Then of course I had to chip in during the frenzy of BoF, Iris, make Dramabeans my homesite at work so I could sneak in a few recaps before having to dive into work, vent to my friend about various recaps until even she broke down to visit your site. Now I get to read recaps of some of my favorite variety shows & movies!

It has been such fun - thank you!!!! I look forward to the next 5000 posts!

Sincerely,

Carla

Wowow. I feel like a newbie compared to some of the writers. Iirc, my absolute first visit here was when I was searching for some info on Dal Ja's Spring in '07 and Google brought me here. But the instance I remember the most is when I just got into Boys Before Flowers fandom in 2008 and I NEEDED someone to share my thoughts with, and Google, being ever so clever, brought me here once more. You guys truly are my K-Drama gold standard, if I'm 50/50 on a drama and you guys say good things about it, I have to watch it. It goes the other way too. Lately, I watch all the dramas you recap. I even want to try soju because of you guys (Drunken podcast, anyone?).

I think I've learned to come to terms with parts of myself because of you guys. Appreciating culture and language and the differences between different cultures. For a lot of my younger years (well, I'm still 'young'), being multiracial/cultural , I felt like I couldn't identify with either side and settled for just being American (that's not a bad thing ofc). But now I feel like its important to share those culture quirks and all. And if I am able to come from more than one, that just amps it up further. (I feel even more like eating K-BBQ today. I still can't believe we are not allowed to grill the meat ourselves :( )

Heh, I worship you guys. I visit this site everyday like the fan I am, hoping my writing skills will improve just from reading all your posts ^^". At one point (or maybe I still do), I said my life would be complete with a reply from one of you guys. But I think I've written too much to be read through D:.

Congrats on the 5000th posts and many more to come! You guys maybe ahjummas now but you have to keep writing through your halmoni years!

congratulations to the 5000th posts!

and what a nicely written fantasy article here!

dramabeans has become such an essential part of my daily life that I cannot recall how I stumbled upon the site in 2009 and got hooked.

dramabeans is one of a kind, the recaps are so good that for some shows, I even just read the recap without watching the actual drama!!

Also the entertainment coverage is credible, I come to trust that JB will not put up any unsubstantiated or yet to be confirm news. So what comes up here has credibility.

Besides urging JB, GF and the whole of dramabeans contributors to keep up the good work. I also want to suggest again that you use your dramabeans clout to lobby for things in k dramaland. first up -- the live shooting system

A place I check everyday.
Authors I consider as friends.
Heartfelt recaps where "heart" isn't just a word.
Posts that are like my daily english lesson.

For me, Dramabeans is a blog that made me laugh, cry, go crazy with the wait, or excited over a new project.
This is the place where I know I'll read witty and snarky posts, followed by (sometimes) witty and snarky comments.
This is the only blog where I read the comments (though not always), and I'm proud of being a part of the Dramabeans comunity. Most of the time, I prefer to not comment (and I wish some would refrain as well...."FIRST" anyone? :D), but I couldn't pass on this celebration.

Look, this is the kind of blog where when you read, there's like 120 comments, and when YOU send your comment, there's already over 150 ones. This is how dramabeans.com is successful.

Thank you so much, to all of you: Sarah, GF, samsooki, Thundie, daheefanel, kaedejun, redpill, gummimochi, sassychef....and all of you, dramabeaners!
Thanks for the aw, the ew, the omo! the sexy!
The fact that I've opened my blog, (http://himonotales.wordpress.com) I partly owe it to you in a way.

Long live dramabeans!
