Ha Ji-won and Cha Seung-won in The King?
There have been so many rumors upon rumors circulating for so long about Ha Ji-won starring in upcoming romantic comedy The King, and new reports are out that she’s finally confirmed the role. But with this drama, I’ll believe it when I see it. And right on the tail of her casting report, a new name got tossed out for a possible leading man in Cha Seung-won, who’s reportedly considering the role carefully. I swear, this drama just needs to pick a cast already. I vote for this pair. Can we start filming now?
The King is a high-buzz romantic comedy set in a fictional contemporary Korea where a monarchy still exists. The crown prince is arranged to marry an intelligence agent from North Korea (Ha Ji-won), and hijinks ensue. Listen, I’d be all over this if Myung-wol the Spy didn’t tank like the thousand battleships of doom that it did. Granted, one drama has nothing to do with the other, but it still brings up bad associations. Whereas before I’d be really giddy, my expectation meter is currently set to we’ll see, Show.
This drama is the highly anticipated re-team of PD Lee Jae-kyu and writers Hong Jin-ah and Hong Ja-ram (the other Hong Sisters–not the Best Love/Gumiho/My Girl ones) who are reuniting for the first time since Beethoven Virus. The director worked with Ha Ji-won nine years ago on Damo, so there are lots of reunions afoot.
The King plans to air on MBC in March. But airdates are for dramas with casts, so we’ll see if this production can make some deals and finally set sail.
