Lee Yeon-hee reunites with So Ji-sub for Ghost

Well not that I was all over So Ji-sub‘s new crime drama Ghost to begin with (seriously skeptical of where the thrill in this thriller will come from), but with the addition of Lee Yeon-hee (Paradise Ranch) as the heroine, I’m pretty much going to be out for the count. I swear, I’ll try to keep an open mind and give it a shot, but some things are just written in the stars.

So this is actually Lee Yeon-hee’s second project with So Ji-sub: they did a four-episode drama special on cable network OCN called U-turn back in 2008, which was a big hit. Ghost is the new project from the PD-writer team of last year’s forensic procedural Sign, and this time it’ll be a procedural about a cyber crimes division.

So Ji-sub plays the cold, gruff golden boy elite cyber detective who doesn’t like people and is a stickler for the rules. Lee Yeon-hee plays Yoo Kang-mi, a twenty-something elite cyber detective… known for being an uljjang [famous for being pretty online].

O-kay? I know, I know–open mind! It’s just… the idea of her even being a cop just makes me giggle, let alone an elite special task force anything. At least they’re playing to some of their strengths, with Lee Yeon-hee as the pretty girl and So Ji-sub as the broody antisocial guy. The crimes-of-the-week better be friggin’ awesome on this show, ‘s all I’m sayin’.

Ghost airs in May on SBS, following Rooftop Prince.

If Ghost falls shorter than the awesome cases that Sign delivered then I'm out coz man Lee Yeon Hee is flat as an actress and So Ji Sub is mostly just a smoldering cool guy. Not a fan of both of their acting but I loved Sign so I'm gonna give this a chance.

I think we mostly have to blame the writers for that one, and the casting director for the male lead.
She had really good chemistry with JSW.

What is it about her and older men?

How do I know if that uljjang e-voting poll wasn't rigged or hacked since it's about cyber crimes after all? Okay, open mind! Kidding aside, I loved her in that, you know, heartbreaking film with Hyun Bin as a millionaire/billionaire heir giving up his wealth to save his first love. Just that one. Yeah, my list is short on her work.

Darn, HJW praises Hyun Bin in K2H, SG flashback, and now this. Oh, do I miss Hyun Bin!?! And when is Late Autumn ever gonna release?

I loooooooooove Lee Yeon Hee. Well, I'm probably in the minority since I'm most likely one of three guys who frequent this site. I've always found Yeon Hee's acting much better in movies than in dramas. Since she'll have a good co-star and a better PD, she may end up raising her game.

Okay, I'll be honest, I'll be watching this since I find Lee Yeon Hee fucking hot and her acting is secondary to me. As long as she's serviceable, I'm ok.

Hey CZ, i thought you were gonna include a pretty face topped with big jugs who else is not in... :)

She is a sweet actress and very young to boot. Give her more time i say and the rite kind of roles she will shine prettily ;)

Absolutely agree that LYH is better in movies than dramas. She was very natural and understated in Hello Schoolgirl, not so much in Paradise Ranch.

LYH may be young, but she's been around for a while, starting off in "Sea God" in 2004 and her 1st film "A Millionaire's First Love" in 2006.

Really haven't seen much of her stuff, but from what I have seen, she just needs to keep to parts within a limited range of emotions, until she makes a break-through like Kim Tae-hee.

KTH did a superb job in "My Princess"; not only getting the comedic timing down, but hitting the right notes on the emotional/crying scenes.

Was actually quite impressed by her performance in "MP" it takes a lot to impress me.

I didn't particularly enjoy My Princess in general. It started off real cute and I kinda liked it but that simmered down the more I watched and the more it went a long.

Kim Tae Hee hasn't impressed me yet. I still think she has a ways to go before I am invested in watching her.

She's cute.
Hopefully she won't have really bad hair because then JoAnne will have nothing to say at all.

But her flat delivery against his flat delivery will be interesting to not watch.

UNLESS he goes all Christopher Walken on us. That would be awesome. I don't mean "Cowbell" CW, I mean At Close Range or Deerhunter CW.

Not to mention he is a '77 and she is an '88.
She looks 17 and sometimes he looks rode hard and put away wet. (I am so going to get it now!) (Oh, well.)

If you want to see a really good SJS performance, see Rough Cut (2008) with Kang Ji-Hwan written by Kim Ki-duk.
That pair had tons of chemistry.

One reviewer described him as "using his calm, cool demeanor that houses a monsoon of emotions underneath." In this case, I believed it.

Btw after it ended, I cried like a little girl. Still upsets me thinking about it. I've noticed that happens to me with these K films/dramas a lot.

They build you up all film for something. It hits at the end fast, then it's over, and a wall of anguish overwhelms you suddenly as the credits roll.

I seriously...toward the end, in the mud flats? I really did not know who got up and who stayed down. And then when we knew...I didn't know if he was EVER going to get up. And then, and then, and then...omg, I bawled like a baby and kept saying no to the computer. No, don't DO that, you can be DIFFERENT, don't do it, don't do it.

But of course he did. The final shot of his face in the broken car window killed me.

0

I think they didn't want us to know who was who at that point in the mud.
That was it - the last shot. I cried for 15 minutes after.

Loved the director's reaction to the fight, too.

0

yeah, but rough cut is pretty much the only movie he actually did a good job, he is sexy as hell and that's all, without that movie, he would be another mr. hand towel:D

what's up haters?

Lee Yeon-hee was pretty much one of the few saving graces of the East of Eden trainwreck and Hyun Bin just recently talked about how young and cute she was back when they filmed together.
So Ji-sub is as A-listy good as you can go even when he can be infuriatingly boring sometimes.
Both of them are a hit-or-miss, so yeah, wait and sip some tea

The premise of Ghost is superbly nonsensical if they can't manage to back the hacking and red-tape with realistic, engaging background stories... think lawsuits, antitrust issues, The Social Network nerds and maybe a dash of Story of a Man/The Slingshot.

As for crime dramas, TEN is now the new benchmark for me.

Playing to the strengths of the actor is what a director should do but sometimes it does not work out for the better.

Required fields are marked *

I agree. For me, Sign was a very very good procedural drama, along the likes of HIT, and The Devil (well, the Devil was kinda different) But sort of along the lines of suspenseful thrillers.
But it was the first 2 episodes of TEN that had me hooked, TEN set the bar pretty high, so it will be difficult now.

On a related note, I am so glad we are having recaps of TEN on dramabeans. Many people will know more about this excellent drama. Hopefully season 2 will still be confirm for this year.
