Hong sisters’ upcoming Big finalizes cast

The lineup is set for Big, the Hong sisters’ latest drama (their eighth series in eight years), and it’s pretty much everyone we’d been told was considering the show:

  • Gong Yoo, in his drama comeback post-army and post-Coffee Prince;
  • Lee Min-jung, coming back to dramas after a string of movies (Cyrano Dating Agency, Wonderful Radio) and hopefully finding more success than with her disappointing Midas;
  • and It Girl of the moment Suzy, who’s in the spotlight these days due to her movie Introduction to Architecture, which has proven to be a box-office hit.

The drama initially sounded like another version of Big and Thirteen Going on Thirty (which is basically an updated Big): a teenager suddenly finds himself in the body of a thirtysomething man (Gong Yoo). But it turns out it’s not the same setup after all, because the adolescent doesn’t turn into an adult; he enters his body. Thus it’s actually not about a hero speed-aging, but about body swapping.

So, instead of one body changing overnight, we have two male characters: the 18-year-old is Kang Kyung-joon, who’s in love with Suzy. After he gets into an accident, his soul enters the body of a 30-something businessman, Seo Yoon-jae (Gong Yoo). But adult Yoon-jae has a fiancée (Lee Min-jung) who’s left wondering what happened to her man overnight that left him with an adolescent spirit. Jang Hee-jin has also been cast, playing Yoon-jae’s ex-girlfriend, but I don’t really care about her (she was meh in Myung-wol the Spy and What’s Up), so whatever.

On one hand, I think this storyline is a lot more conventional than the other one, when I thought he was gonna grow up overnight. We’ve had a lot of body-swapping and possession dramas already, like Secret Garden and 49 Days, so it’s less novel. And why title the drama Big, then, which clearly references the Tom Hanks movie, if our hero’s not doing any embiggening? Swapped seems more apt. On the other hand, I really enjoyed body-swapper Who Are You, and if Gong Yoo is anywhere as good as Yoon Kye-sang was at playing dual roles (and I anticipate he will be), it’ll be a hoot.

With this added tidbit, I think the storyline effectively clears up potentially squicky moments arising from our leads’ ages (she’s near 30, he’s still a minor). It’s already less disturbing than that other boy-grows-big-overnight drama I Love Lee Tae-ri, which stars Kim Ki-bum and Park Ye-jin, where Kim goes from 14 to 30. At least 18 is a lot closer to adulthood. Plus, the fact that the fiancé is originally an adult makes the relationship less, uh, illegal.

In any case, Big is definitely on my shortlist of dramas I want to see, NOW. It’s too bad there seems to be a growing backlash against the Hong sisters’ work, which saddens me but I can sort of understand; if one drama’s brand of fast-flying banter, wordplay, and comedy isn’t your thing, then chances are high that the other seven dramas won’t appeal to you, either. Which isn’t to say that you must like or hate them all; I definitely have my favorites.

Fingers crossed this’ll be a good one. Big begins airing in June.

Come on, Suzy?! I know she's the girl next door but seriously?

Why not her? She was good in her new movie, & received praise from other actresses and the media.

Not to mention she's also very likeable, I'd love to see her in this. Hopefully her character is awesome, her character in Dream High was whiny, sulky, and definitely not the typical K-drama heroine we're used to.

Coffee Prince was my 2nd kdrama and Gong Yoo was my first k-hero love so I'M THERE! I can't wait for his gazes-of-intense-longing-that-make-me-die!

It directly reminds me of 18 vs. 29! I think the relations between the triangle would be similar ^^

i don't like idol-actresses at all but I thought Suzy's acting in Dream high was palatable, not good , not bad, just right since it wasn't to be a stone-cold heroine after all. I had no idea why there were negative comments about the poor kid.

I've seen every Hong sisters drama (save for the last few episodes of Fantasy Couple still sitting on my hard drive... probably my least favorite) and this will be no exception, Gong Yoo and Lee Min-jung are some of my favorite actors, and I remember hoping they would do a drama together back when their Mindbridge photoshoots came out.. and now they are, and it's pretty much guaranteed to be a hit. :P

I did have some reservations about the premise (I love the original movie but the romance angle there always struck me as.. well, creepy) even if he was aged up, and while this is slightly more conventional I have faith they'll make it unique.

Yay for the next Hong sisters drama. I wonder if older Gong-yoo/Seo Yoon-jae will have times when he can be himself and not the 18-year old. Sort of like how Yoon Kye-sang's character wasn't possessed by Goo A-ra's character's dad 24/7.

I can sort of understand some of the backlash against the Hong sister's drama. I think they've gotten slightly lazy on the characterization in recent years. Best Love was awesome, but Gu Ae-jung's character was the one we really got to understand. Dokko Jin was fun to watch, but we didn't get to really know him (it had always bugged me that we didn't know much about his past besides the heart problem). My favorite will forever be Delightful girl Chunhyung.

coffee prince is one of my favorite dramas of all time, that cast had INCREDIBLE chemistry. gong yoo was so fabulous in it. admittedly i have become a little wary of hong sisters' dramas in recent years. it seems like every scene is crammed with puns and metaphors. funny and clever as they are, i think they might be more effective (for me anyway) if not inserted so liberally. a lot of times i found myself wishing they'd play a scene straight for a change. still, if it's gong yoo, i'm hopeful and optimistic.

NOT so excited about lee min-jung. i find her likeable as a person, but i can't really recall a single work of hers that left an impression on me. not a fan of her slightly nasally voice either.

the suzy casting makes me happier; her acting was rather horrible the first couple of episodes of dream high, but she did get better and in the end, i couldn't imagine anyone else as hyemi... which is a success in my book.

i am SO excited that gong yoo will be back in dramaland that i don't care what this drama will be about. it's been too long. now i just hope he doesn't disappoint me like eun hye's CP follow ups did. i fell in love with both of them in CP and have been craving to see them shine ever since. i say this is a win/win because even if the drama is a bust (which i doubt b/c it is THE hong sister) at least i'll be able to salivate over gong yoo for 16 episodes!

I am way too excited for this. I was like Hong Sisters: IN. And then Gong Yoo...oh my goodness...

Just finished Gumiho tonight which makes me all the more psyched--I want more cameos too!

I just hope we can avoid the squick factor as well--it reminds me a little too much of Ramyun Shop, which I did not enjoy as much because of the age thing...

Was going to watch this drama either way, i'm glad the cast is confirmed and i can not wait!

It's interesting that my biggest disinterest towards the drama (the 'big' concept) has changed yet i don't feel /more/ excited for this drama? Maybe i also tire from body swapping, will wait and see :)!

What is up with jang heejin playing unlikable second female leads? OK..well most female leadsa are unlikable but her characters in what's up, myungwol, and this other drama i forgot the name were all those one-dimentional bitchy characters. Ok it's also too early to assume her role in this one but..I have a feeling she'll be playing the same role.

I love Suzy and I love it when she's playing the role close to her age from DH to her debut film and now this. She's only 19 and its okay if she's lack emotion, not everybody as talented as Moon Geun Young and Kim Yoo Jung :-).

She will get better in the future. I trust in her acting ability.

Maybe cus I grew out of Hong sisters dramas? But I definitely used to love the My girl series. It kinda didn't work for me after that. 3 dramas later, I fell out of love and haven't seen the recent 2 dramas. It's kinda sad since I loved the premise and the story but the female leads always managed to kill it for me. Couple fantasy was meh. You're beautiful's female lead was too weak, and I hate weak female leads. And Hong Gil Dong's was, weak and bland.

my first comment. because i always be silent reader all the time. but since everyone talks about hong sister. i wanna give my opinion too. hong sister drama list that i've ever watched: sassy girl chun hyang = love it, i watched it till the end. YAB = just so so, watched till the end, but in the half way i get bored. the greatest love = like it, but i lost my lost appetite in the middle, so not watched till the end. gumiho = no comment, i dont even care the end of this series. my girl = i watched till the end just because i dont have anything to do. the king 2 hearts = until now i still craving for this show. i hope they wont dissapointed me till the end. actually i always like their creation. because there's always hilarious scenes that i love to watch again and again. but i feel their drama just entertaining in beginning but in half way they story become standart and boring.

hi ulaspotamus

I just wanted to clarify to you about the writers of 'The King 2 Hearts' The writers of TK2H are a different set of Hong sisters, The one that wrote Beethoven Virus (writers Hong Jin-ah and Hong Ja-ram)

The rom-com, Hong sisters that wrote Best Love/Greatest Love, My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, You're Beautiful, My Girl, etc. (writers Hong Jung-eun and Hong Mi-ran)

So, two sets of Hong Sisters. I just wanted to have the correct writers credited to the their corresponding work.

Gong Yooooooooo!! :OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Like the most attractive man in the whole world :'D I'm gonna watch all even if it sucks. I like several Hong Sister dramas I don't think they're the best because I always hype it more then what I actually get. But I can't say I dislike any of them.
I HATE the idea of other people entering others bodies and then doing embarrassing stuff. So I wish that he actually had grown from 18 to 30 so there wasn't any body swapping involved. Body swapping is also so done - in a bad way. There are several themes that I like seeing remade. But not this. Aaaah I hope it will be great.

This is one of those wait and see dramas. I like Gong Yoo as an actor but he just hasn't found, in my opinion, the drama that will catapult him into the limelight again. Just because the Hong Sisters wrote this drama doesn't mean it will be a hit.

Gong Yoo has excellent comedic timing but has not aligned himself with female leads that bring the best out in him. He might want to be a serious actor too, I wish him the best. I personally like him in romantic comedies that bring out different male sensitivities which are enduring to the majority of women.

His comedic timing in Coffee Prince was exceptional as was it with the other members of the cast too. That drama had a lot of class.

My 1st (and even 2nd) impressions of the 3 actors weren't that favorable based on the projects that I saw them in, but since then, I've managed to see them in things I liked, so that changed my perceptions.

I 1st saw GY in a couple of mediocre films, so I wasn't exactly expecting much when I watched "Coffee Prince", but he simply blew me away in CP w/ his subtle acting.

It took me forever to get thru the film "Cyrano Dating Agency" - LMJ didn't exactly leave an impression on me there, but since then, I've seen her on variety shows like RM, so have come to like her based on that.

Watched a little bit of "Dream High" and Suzy didn't leave much of an impression on me, but likewise, also like her based on her variety show appearances.

Haven't seen Suzy's film, but apparently her acting has improved.

lee min jung!! i love her~ as a protagonist or antagonist ^.^

i'm not so into Gong Yoo but he's fine :) suzy is okay too~

but my concern is that i see a future of me comparing this drama to Who Are You? (which i don't like when i watch new drama)

Who Are You? is one of my most favourite Korean drama, Yoon Kye Sang realy did a great impressive fabulous job in that drama, i was moved so many times~

anyway, look forward to this show :D

There a a lot of actors who have a decent track record but in their heart of hearts they want a hit....Like I said before, I wish he would align himself with female actors who aren't self-conscious and who are good pretenders, which is the name of the acting game in my opinion, they are out there....he just is not looking hard enough, or maybe he isn't listening to his gut level instinct. OH WELL. time will tell....drama ratings are a tricky business....

I will tell you guys the correct story of the drama “BIG”.

Gong Yoo will be a 30 year old doctor and he will be Lee Min Jung’s fiancee. Lee Min Jung will play the role of a high school teacher and Shin Won Ho, Bae Suzy and Baek Sung Hyun will be her students. Baek Sung Hyun will be Lee Min Jung’s brother who likes Suzy. Shin Won Ho will be the 18 year old student who also likes Suzy.
After Gong Yoo and Shin Won Ho’s souls switch it will happen that Gong Yoo(with Shin Won Ho’s Soul)will follow Suzy as he likes her and Shin Won Ho(with Gong Yoo’s Soul) likes his own teacher Lee Min Jung because their souls are exchanged.
And also Jang Hee Jin will be Gong Yoo’s ex-girlfriend who will return from overseas to get him back.
So it will be a very complicated drama with so many love tangles.
But its Hong Sisters drama so it will be Super Hit.The other Hong Sisters drama were Delightful Girl Choon Hyang (KBS2, 2005),My Girl (SBS, 2005-06),You’re Beautiful (SBS, 2009),My Girlfriend is a Nine-Tailed Fox (KBS2, 2010),The Greatest Love (MBC, 2011) and now Big (KBS2, 2012).
And Gong Yoo is making his comeback after five years after The 1st shop of Coffee Prince, Lee Min Jung from Midas,Bae Suzy(miss A) from Dream High and Architecture 101, Shin Won Ho from Bachleors Vegetable Store, Baek Sung Hyun from Queen Insoo, Jang Hee Jin from Myung Wol The Spy.
I personally love Suzy from miss A and wish her all the best for the drama and also all the cast of BIG.
It will be aired on June 4th 2012 on KBS2 Mon-Tue at 21:55 replacing Love Rain.

I tried to watch My Girlfriend Is A Gumiho 3 times last year, every time I stopped after 10 minutes. Too sweet, sugarcoated etc. The 4th time I pushed one minute further, and ...hooked !

I am a dedicated fan of the Hong Sisters ever after.
In fact, Fantasy Couple is the pet-drama for me from all their series.

With this drama, they must have had a lot of fun together thinking and talking about all the ideas that came up.
So full of subtle or not-subtle jokes, it is a surrealistic drama pur sang.
The duel on the dyke, to swap the cat and the dog: I am not a ballet-expert, but if I ever became one, this will be my favorite ballet-scene ever !
