Rooftop Prince: Episode 11

With feelings both growing stronger and starting to conflict with our main mission, this episode brings us a spot of angst and heartache, while our leads grapple with What (I Assume) Must Be versus What I Want. I’m just waiting for them to figure out that they may be operating on some skewed assumptions on the What Must Be side of things. That, or maybe they can say to hell with it and just take what they want. Hey, once you’re on the path of idiocy, who’s to say noble is better than selfish?

EPISODE 11 RECAP

Yi Gak chases down Park-ha, who cringes at the thought that he’s read her confession of love. He takes out his phone and taps it tellingly, insisting, “Take responsibility.” Do you mean you’re holding her to her words? Aw, honey, is that a proposal?

And then he adds, “…the dirt got inside so it won’t turn on.” HAHA. Park-ha apologizes through her relief, much happier now, and pedals on.

There’s something in Yi Gak’s reaction, though, that makes me wonder if he’s faking the ignorant act. He’s a little too pensive, and watching her a little too closely…

Park-ha and Yi Gak head to Mom’s house, and just barely miss seeing Se-na leave the neighborhood. Probably best for all, at this stage of things.

Park-ha’s here to pick up Mom’s documents to help her file her taxes, and Mom returns something she found mixed in with her things: Tae-yong’s cell phone, the one Tae-mu tried to destroy (twice). Mom recognizes Park-ha’s gentleman friend on the wallpaper, and hands it over.

Park-ha gives it to Yi Gak, who recalls the suspicious circumstances of its disappearance: how the family had urged him to get it unlocked, and how Tae-mu had acted strange when it went missing.

At home, Chi-san deals with a tummyache, and HA, is the duckling literally wearing a duckling on his shirt? Oh my meta. Se-na arrives for their barbecue party just as the boys decide to piggyback him to the hospital, and drives them over.

Man-bo and Yong-sool pace in the waiting room, hoping he won’t die, and breathe a sigh of relief when they’re told he’ll be fine after a simple surgery for his appendicitis.

Man-bo packs an overnight bag for the hospital stay, and heads out just as Park-ha and Yi Gak arrive. The trio immediately head for the hospital, where they find Chi-san in recovery. Man-bo praises Se-na for her quick thinking and calls her a life-saver, earning everyone’s gratitude. Park-ha quietly leaves, feeling ever more discouraged, taking a moment to gather her deflated feelings in the bathroom.

Upon her return Park-ha overhears Se-na talking to Yi Gak, expressing her unease about him and Park-ha being alone together, despite his assurance that she has no reason to worry. Again he tells her it’s nothing—although his expression seems to hint at something else.

Chi-san tells his friends that when he was in the throes of pain, the idea that he might die here, away from his family, was enough to bring him anguish. Yes, this life is comfortable, but it’s not home. He laments, “I really want to go back.”

Yi Gak feels responsible for his men’s difficulties, and it renews his desire to end this journey quickly. He asks them to endure just a little longer until they can achieve their goal, after which they’ll be able to return home. It’s a theory that makes some sense, given that they were brought here for a reason—they just have to fulfill their task and the mojo that brought them here should kick in again, right?

Park-ha brings them dinner, but excuses herself to head home early. Yi Gak also cites a lack of appetite and declines to eat, while Chi-san is unable to eat until he passes the post-surgery gas still in his gut. Loyal Yong-sool chooses solidarity, which is a riot given the abject seriousness of his tone contrasting with the words: “Until he farts, I will not eat, either.” Funny, ’cause I probably wouldn’t want to eat after that, either.

That leaves Man-bo looking longingly at dinner and shooting Yong-sool a dirty look—he can’t be the only one eating, after all. That would just look bad.

Park-ha and Yi Gak head home in silence, not speaking, both lost in thought. Yi Gak doesn’t realize that she hasn’t followed him onto the bus until he looks out his window, seeing her turning to walk on alone.

That means he arrives home first and waits up for her worriedly. His call goes unanswered because she’s shut her phone off, so he heads out to look, scouring the streets.

While he’s out, Park-ha sits in a huddle on the front stoop, reluctant to go inside to face him. She looks up at their beach mural, but it doesn’t seem to provide much comfort today.

Yi Gak finds her sitting there, and covers for the fact that he was out looking for her by saying he was just getting some air. And when he asks why her phone was off, he makes up the excuse that wanted to send her on an errand.

Yi Gak tends to their aquarium, fishing out the sprouted lotus seed and replanting it in a pot. She asks why, and he answers that it’s to make sure it doesn’t die, but she asks, “Can’t it just live in the aquarium with the fish?” The analogy isn’t lost on either of them as he replies, “I was intending to move it and plant it from the start.” The background song sings out, “I know that’s a lie,” but Park-ha takes him at face value and walks away feeling disheartened.

She sits outside on the patio, and he silently joins her. Uncomfortable in his presence, she gets up to leave, but he grabs her wrist as she walks by and asks, “Is it true that you like me?” I knew it! He did read the message!

She starts to feel indignant that he read the text and pretended not to, making a fool of her, but he’s not to be thus distracted and repeats his question.

He takes her by the shoulders, turning her to face him, and says gently, “Don’t like me.” She turns to hide her tears, and after her departure he says to himself, “I’m sorry.”

Yi Gak takes the recovered cell phone to the service center for unlocking and repair, then looks through its contents for clues. In the gallery, he finds that photo of the cousins in New York together, with metadata confirming the date of shot, betraying Tae-mu’s lie. (February 17 is the date, for future reference.)

With one hunch confirmed, he asks Park-ha for the postcard and asks how she came to have it. She tells him she never knew Tae-yong drew her and never met him, but she does backtrack through her memory to confirm that she received the card on February 17. Another puzzle piece falls into place.

She still thinks she got stood up, but Yi Gak tells her that the reason Tae-yong didn’t meet her was because he died right before their rendezvous date. That’s his belief, at any rate, and he fixates on this bit: “You could have met Yong Tae-yong. You were meant to meet Yong Tae-yong.” Ooh, keep going with that line of thought—just a few more steps till you uncover more thwarted destinies…

Yi Gak asks Pyo Taek-soo for information, trying to retrace the events leading up to Tae-yong’s death/disappearance. His boat was found on February 18, missing its owner, so that narrows down the window some more. Tae-mu arrived in the States on the 17th. Taek-soo says they just need proof of the cousins meeting to shine a light on Tae-mu’s lie.

Yi Gak keeps his mouth shut about the photo for now, opting to gather more corroborating evidence first. He calls Tae-mu out for a drink and baits him, saying, “I keep running into someone I’m supposed to remember, which feels like my memory is starting to come back. But my memories just upset me.” He wonders if his hyung believes in fate. Tae-mu laughs that no, such things don’t exist.

But Yi Gak’s tone gets more serious as he uses his beer glass and bottle to symbolize two people: Say a man and a woman were destined to meet. But instead, something happened and interfered. Thwack! He knocks the bottle over: “Thus that man couldn’t meet that woman. That angers me.”

Tae-mu is unnerved at this loaded analogy, but he brushes the subject aside and says he’d rather talk about something less confusing. Yi Gak agrees to an easier topic, and asks: “When I was living in America, what was the last conversation we had?”

Tae-mu says their last exchange was an international phone call, before he left Korea to meet Tae-yong. Yi Gak asks if they’d ever gone to a bar like this in New York, and that strikes a note of alarm in Tae-mu’s brain. He scans the place and realizes that it’s a lot like the bar they’d drunk at the night before the yacht accident. But he’s careful not to betray his fears; slapping on a smile, he replies that it’s possible they went to a similar bar—there’s nothing too unusual about this one.

Yi Gak says that this is an example of him not being sure of whether he’s remembering or imagining things from the past: “And my memory of our last conversation wasn’t a phone call, but on a boat.” Dun dun dun!

While Tae-mu trembles with nerves, Yi Gak asks for just one clear answer: “Two years ago on February 17 when you arrived in New York, did you meet me, or not?”

They lock gazes, and Tae-mu growls, “Crazy bastard.” Yi Gak growls right back, “Either we met or we didn’t, it’s one of the two. The answer isn’t crazy bastard.”

Tae-mu chooses outrage as his mode of deflection, accusing his cousin of toying with him, but Yi Gak persists with his question. Tae-mu answers that they didn’t meet, and Yi Gak laughs in his face, saying, “You say we didn’t meet, so you’re a liar. If you’d said we did meet, you’d be a killer. Which are you?” Oooh. Ballsy. He follows that with: “But those two people are the same: the killer and the liar.”

Tae-mu steps close and warns, “You’ve crossed the final line.” Which would put them on the same side, by my count, though I’m pretty sure the killer doesn’t get to complain about lines of propriety. Tae-mu vows to trample his cousin thoroughly to ensure he never says those words again. Okay, now, you can’t just announce your murderous intent—not when you’re doing such a poor job whacking people already. Now you’re just giving them more ways to escape you, Worst Killer Ever.

The awkwardness continues between Park-ha and Yi Gak at work, where they keep their distance despite being keenly aware of the other. When Park-ha trips on a stair and hurts her ankle, Yi Gak keeps himself from hurrying the help her, but he goes out to buy band-aids and medication and leaves them for her.

She corners him at home to ask why he’s being so solicitous, looking after her. He feigns ignorance and says he hasn’t been, nor does he intend to. Frustrated, she bursts out, “I’m not telling you to like me!” She’s just trying to make sense of his mixed messages.

She’s opened this can of worms, so he sits her down and starts his explanation—of the princess who was poisoned before he made the time-jump, and how he must solve her murder in order to return home. And how he believes that to do so, he has to re-create the events of the day she died. To do that, he’ll have to marry Se-na and make history repeat itself. His impersonation of Tae-yong and his job at the company are all in pursuit of the goal to marry the princess’s reincarnation.

In so doing, he believes there will be an attempt made on the princess’s life in this world as well: “I’ll reveal who it is that tries to kill her in this place, and prevent the death. Then I will know who poisoned the princess in Joseon, and once I know, my companions and I will return there.”

On the upside for him, Se-na is all about marrying him, and she says so in their next date, acting like she likes him so much that she wanted to confirm their feelings and get that out in the open. With any other guy it would be jumping the gun, but in this case this just makes his job easier and he thanks her. And then they handshake, because marriage is a business transaction entered into by consenting adults with personal agendas to further. Right?

They agree to break the news later to the adults, who laugh that this is speedy but probably just characteristic of youngsters these days. Grandma wants an engagement period before the ceremoney, but is otherwise pleased to welcome Se-na as future in-law.

Uncle Money, meanwhile, sits back with a devious smile, since he’s content to let two of his enemies shack up. That gives him the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone—which in this case may not even be much of a metaphor. You never know with this family.

On the other hand, Tae-mu doesn’t take this news well, since he does really love Se-na and has yet another grievance to level against his cousin. He clenches his fist, not even hearing his father’s advice to hurry up and marry first, securing his position before his cousin.

He calls Se-na out to a quiet stairwell to demand to know what she’s doing. She reminds him that she broke up with him cleanly, and that this will be the last time they’ll be meeting like this, secretly.

Tae-mu follows her out into the hallway and grabs her arm, but sees Yi Gak standing at a distance and forces his voice low. He warns, “You won’t get what you want. I won’t allow it—not for either of you.” Is it just me, or does anybody else hear the implied Or I’ll kill you hanging in the air?

Yi Gak asks what that intense encounter was about, ready to swoop in to her defense. Se-na lies that she’d made a mistake and assures Yi Gak not to worry, since she merited Tae-mu’s anger.

Se-na sits down with her mother to tell her the news, and Mom is thrilled that her daughter is engaged to the company president’s grandson. Se-na adds hurriedly, apologetically, that the other family doesn’t know about Mom and that she hasn’t told them about her. Since having a mother is pretty standard, as far as humans go, in this case her wording suggests that Se-na has fibbed about Mom’s whereabouts and that she knows it’s hurtful. So she pleads with Mom to be understanding and promises to introduce them later. Like maybe after the wedding, when it’s too late to kick up a fuss?

Mom is disappointed but agrees to go with it. Later she has a drink with Park-ha, who’s feeling drinky herself. They smile and laugh together, both trying to find their cheer amid the hurt, and when it’s time to part ways Mom finally breaks down in tears, hugging Park-ha as she cries.

Yi Gak watches over the lotus plant, thinking of Park-ha. He’s gazing at the beach mural when Park-ha stumbles home. She wonders tearily, “Of all the places in this big city, why did you have to fall onto my rooftop?”

The team continues with their product launch, and Park-ha accompanies Man-bo to the warehouse. As they unload boxes, a faulty electrical outlet starts to spark, going unnoticed until after Man-bo steps out for more boxes, the door locking behind him.

Thus he can’t get back inside, even as smoke seeps out of the door cracks. He shouts for help while Park-ha navigates the burning interior, looking in vain for an exit path.

Meanwhile, Se-na and Yi Gak take a meeting to work out contract details. He excuses himself to take Man-bo’s phone call, is stricken with alarm, and rushes out immediately.

At the warehouse, Park-ha inhales too much smoke and collapses. The guards finally get the lock open just as Yi Gak arrives. but guards hold everyone away from the burning building.

Yi Gak pushes his way through anyway, shouting Park-ha’s name as he makes his way inside amid falling boxes. Park-ha vaguely registers the shouting, but fades into unconcsiousness.

COMMENTS

Eh. Sort of a perfunctory episode, I thought. We had to get here and I don’t really have issues with the content of the episode, which were necessary steps. Yi Gak had to fight his feelings for Park-ha to keep his eye on the big picture, and he had to move forward with Se-na. But he also had to also be jolted into action because of Park-ha (ergo, heroic rescue), which presumably will make him realize how he really feels about her. I’m operating on the assumption that he has an inkling of his feelings for her but is consciously suppressing them, because a new romantic future is a luxury he can’t afford to indulge right now.

But the show kinda sleepwalked through these plot points, zooming straight through without stopping to pick up its sidekicks, Cute and Funny. And in the absence of these two scene-stealers, we can really feel the energy level drop. It felt like the show just chugged on quickly, taking a “Let’s just get this over with, folks” approach. I do agree that the comedic sidebars do tend to be on the periphery to the main plot, but I don’t think it’s a bad thing. In this drama’s case, the quirk factor gives us the zip and zing, so they’re welcome additions, and I missed them.

I also see, narratively, why they toned down the sidekicks’ moods in this episode, since we’re in the part where they get homesick—they’ve assumed all along that they’d get to go home, but I don’t think it’s been that clear to us. Now’s the time to start preparing the audience that these boys will have to be Quantum Leaping back to their real lives, reminding us that they don’t belong here. On the other hand, much of the lighter, adorable beats that this drama has successfully pulled off isn’t directly related to these plotlines, so I don’t see why we couldn’t have had more duckling action regardless.

But most of all, I think it’s the Park-ha heartbreak that really changed up the mood, because she spent the episode moping. I was there with her emotionally so I wasn’t upset that she was moping—girl has a pretty good reason for being bummed—but it definitely weighed down the ambiance. Park-ha is at her most winning as the spunky and occasionally crabby mama duck, so I missed her energy.

Since this episode took us to the angst zone, here’s to hoping we get pulled out of it soon. Like, tomorrow-soon.

I don't know why, but after this episode, I feel even more strongly that the person who died was actually Bu Yong and that she was killed by her sister. It would match up with the current time line and if it goes how he says it goes, them its Park Ha who he's supposed to save from Se Na :O

I really liked this episode though, especially the Tae-mu bar scene. I love that we have a smart hero. I feel like we need this episode to have the darker, angstier mood that it did, but I do want my F4 back :(

Just wondering though...Lee Gak was called after but still arrived before the police+ambulance? And where are the firemen? I guess I'll have to overlook that lol

And with the prevalence of fire extinguishers everywhere else, and no sprinklers. lol.

For the record, no ambulance is going to get that close to a burning and potentially block access by a firetruck.

I don't want Bu-young to be dead, but thank you for the theory and how it matches up with present-day events. There's so much going on in the present time (the intrigues, romance, and cute/funny stuff) that I'm all distracted and unable to draw parallels between all of that, and what little we saw of the Joseon stuff.

lol.. that also what i thought at first.. how come he came first? except if the meeting was in the same company. abt fire extinguisher, people might be forget to grab it while they are in panic. but.. no sprinklers? and when i saw the ambulance n those medics pull out a hospital bed, all i thought was, "shouldnt the firetruckhave to arrive n the firemen kill the fire first before the ambulance can get the victims after?" lol..
but i also love the fact that he wet the piece of cloth (the handkerchief?) fist before he went inside. it just idk they know abt it in Joseon era, lol =D

LOL. that was I thought too, I mean they doesn't have any fire extinguishers and no sprinklers at a factory/warehouse??? It's weird. ROFL.

considering the fire started out because of fualty wiring, I think not have sprinkers and fire extinguishers fits such a run down place, seems korea dont have safey and fire inpectors or the place was run down with money dad stealing from the company..ie another plot thread?

Honestly I kinda like the development here particularly in the mystery department. Yah, the episode bordered on the angsty for the romance department, but I think it was somehow balanced with the sleuthing part which I like, since this is a part-mystery show (and apparently the previous episodes were mostly on the cutesy part). I prefer this kind of pace that the show is treading, now that Princey is starting to zero-in on some clues that would shed light to the events surrounding Tae Yong's disappearance (although we know that already from the start) and the connection with their time-leaping. I just hope that along with this new development the show will bring back the bickering bet. the OTP and most especially the comedy, since I miss the antics of the 3 ducklings!

As for the episode's ending, well, I've thought of this theory: As she lost consciousness Park Ha will be in a dream-like state where her soul will somehow "connect" with Bu Yong's, which will trigger her memory of a past life. Which will make her realize that she's Bu Yong.

Thank you for the recap!

I'm glad that the net is slowly closing in on Tae-mu. On the other hand, there are no clues or even explicit theoretical leads on the Joseon murder, which I think is a shame. I hope we learn more about that in the coming eps - there's not much time left, I think!

I also like the signs of homesickness that JB pointed out in her comments. This, coupled with Yi Gak's statement that Park-ha was destined to meet Tae-yong, kind of supports my theory that everyone will end up in his/her own time and we'll have two Yoochun/Ji-min couples (because I am still fervently hoping that both Bo-young and Tae-yong are alive and waiting to be claimed).

I was pondering why I like this drama more than TKTH. I really love the main leads in that drama, have watch them separately in their respective dramas but I think the reason is TKTH has a lot of angst, the lines , the insults are just too painful for me whereas in Rooftop prince, the lines are milder, catchy, funny above else.
Thanks again JB, u wrap up the gist of this ep really good "What (I Assume) Must Be versus What I Want"
in my thoughts , ur a genius in recaps. Hail to QUEEN JAVABEANS of recap kingdom! ^^

I know what you mean.
I watched K2H a little and it was just too painful to keep on watching, whereas in RTP even the angsty scenes don't hurt that much. I think that the difference is that LSK's character says and does some really mean things but Lee Gak, though childish at times, is never mean. I

I guess I watch dramas to escape from the unpleasantness in real life and for me RTP manages to have the right balance of cute, funny, romance, and intrigue.

Yay Tae-Mu finds out that Bak-ha is Ceo Jang daughter but what will he do with that info and if Bak-ha quits her job at Home& shopping where will she live and work? I cannot beleive the grandmother keeps messing with her. I hope Tae-Mu uses that info so that he can get close to bak-ha and she can protect Lee-gak while also remembering meeting them 2 years ago.ahh so excited for ep 12 kiss tomorrow even if it's just a little one but it's better than nothing.Lol I wonder how their relationship will change after the incident today? Only 10 more hours to go.I so hope Bak-ha gets the upper hand now because all of us viewers want to see her bring Se-na and grandma down to size. She is rich after all.

actually from eps 1-10, i was so worried abt how the story goes. up until eps 10 we didnt really see a significant plot how they will solve the Crown Princess mystery. all we saw just how the josen F4 adapting in the new era n how LeeGak tried to woo SeNa while in the same time 'enjoying' his time with ParkHa. only a lil' bit in eps 10, from ManBo words we finally heard how the Josen F4 planning to solve the mystery n go back to Joseon, in which also with those words ParkHa faced with reality that in LeeGak's plans, there is only SeNa in it. so i kinda glad in eps 11 we finally see everything started in motion now. eventho i agree, lack of funniness kinda sadden me... after 10 eps i keep smilling, giggling n smh while laughing, i kinda hope the 10 eps left still gonna provide some laughter to us... i do hope so..

when LeeGak said that he think TaeYong destined/fated to met with ParkHa, i really hope that LeeGak would consider a possibility that, maybe the reason why he come to Joseon not only to solved the murder. but to make TaeYong n ParkHa destinies meet each other (in i dont know how). that he n his minions fell to her rooftop, not SeNa's coz he have to do something for her too. just like ParkHa's words, that all of the place, they fell/came to her rooftop. it must be not a coincidence. fate didnt do coincidences. esp since in Joseon, it was BuYong who supposedly married to LeeGak at first, before the 'accident' that made HwaYong married him instead. maybe fate also destined him to put everything as it supposed to be this time. while in the same time, he would learn the true fact regarding his wife n what she did to BuYong (and how the handkerchief he treasures so much was BuYong's not HwaYong's).

seeing the modern story, made me think that is there possibility that the crown princess have affair back in Joseon since SeNa does have TaeMu in modern days. i mean, she married to LeeGak from a young age. and it look like they dont have anything in common. she interested in beauiful scenery n flowers, LeeGak interested in literature. could be that ParkHa/BuYong accidentaly saw her that nite while she was meeting with her secret lover (TaeMu maybe) n one thing lead to another n BuYong fell to the pond?

but watching how TaeMu seems so murderous whole talking to LeeGak n SeNa (yes, i also sense his unspoken threat to them), it could be is the Crown Princess who died. if she indeed have an affair (and with Joseon Taemu) maybe she tried to broke it off with him n he refused. since in modern era TaeMu did said that he would never let go SeNa if she left him. so maybe since she died in Joseon, LeeGak was supposed to prevent her died in this era. and in the same way, understand who the killer was n let TaeYong be together with ParkHa just how he supposed to be with BuYong in Josen. thinking like this, i hope it was HwaYong who drowned n not BuYong, since i hope after LeeGak back to Joseon, this time, he can marry BuYong, as he destined/supposed to be in the 1st place.

idk. this drama made me think of many possibilities, lol. but in a lighter note, cant wait to see eps 11. LeeGak will kiss ParkHa. i really wanna know what happen after the kiss =D

The acting is definitely on point. I really felt for Park Ha and teared up a bit when they showed how hurt she was after he told her to not like him.

I'm not really familiar with the actress playing Park Ha, but I will say this. For me she is carrying this show. I'm captivated by every scene that she is in.

Unfortunately, everything else (mystery/ corporate shenanigans) is putting me promptly to sleep. Literally. Instant narcolepsy. Also the fact that they have these really long moments with the actors staring into the distance while they play an entire song from the OST... not helping my sleeping condition.

I love this episode. Yes this episode was sad but it's need.
Tae Yong now start discover the truth one by one and the fire accident it's needed so TY can realized how big his feeling is toward PH.

I got feeling that TY marry SN only to solve the mystery. He doesn't care if he have to back to Joseon and left her alone, while he worry about PH when he have to left her alone.

Also I agree with Javabeans, TY actually pretty conscious about his feeling to PH but still trying to suppress it becos he have to solve the mystery.

AND OMG.. TY-TM scene at the pub was HOTTTT. Yoochun totally nailed it! He bring me chills

Exactly what I'm hoping! When Yi Gak goes back to his own time, he should start seeing his sister-in-law in a new light.

PS Since there is currently no Joseon-era Tae-mu, I'm starting to wonder whether the Crown Princess didn't kill herself. Maybe everyone else knew, hence the massive cover-up and not letting Yi Gak find out the facts. Just thinking aloud. I know the show will tell me what's what eventually!

Ok my senses are tickling, so present time we have sena who's angry ex boyfriend threaten to kill her and taeyong, could it be that back in joseon our crown princess was cheating with someone and that person killed her?? And how back in joseon her own father was backing up someone, he reminds me of taemo's dad, a backstabers, grandma would be the king back in joseon and it all makes sense in my head

I'm with you on that take.

The Crown Princess might have been murdered by her lover ( which will be introduced when Yi Gak and the boys go back to their time) who is equivalent to Taemo's character. I still believe that the CP died and not BY.

So I agree with Yi Gak's theory..he needs to marry Se Na so the the ex-boyfriend will have a reason to kill/murder Se Na as a revenge plot. Whether he can stop the murder or not I don't know but that's his plan.

As to Ep 12 preview.. Taemo finally finds that Park Ha is the long lost daughter of CEO Jang..but I don't think he finds out that Sena is Park Ha's sister yet since Sena is keeping it secret.

I'm still clinging to the hope that the real Taeyong is still alive, so if Yi Gak goes back to Jeoson..TY will emerge.

I'm clinging to that hope with you! :)

I know that Yi Gak and Tae-yong don't have the exact same personality, but Tae-yong was already interested in Park-ha, so that gives us something to build on (same with Bu-young appealing to Yi Gak's intellect). Park-ha can still nag Tae-yong, haha!

The bottom line is I don't want anyone to be lonely when the ducklings have to return to their own time!

i also think the same =D
i mean, what happened in modern era seems just as similar as what happened in Joseon, so maybe (if it was BuYong who died) HwaYong did have an affair, and BuYong somehow found it, maybe coincidentally saw her that nite when she 'supposedly walk outside for some fresh air'. or if it is HwaYong who died, that maybe it was in the hand of her lover. either of the two, maybe that was why their father tried to cover up the murder. since it will made his daughter unforgivable affair known n could jeopardized his whole families' lives. i mean, cheating on your husband who is the next king? i believe it means dead for the whole family.

I must say though, this episode really caught me off guard. Usually, the Wednesday's episodes are the funnier ones...but it seems we're going to have 2 downer episodes this week. Despite, the mood change, episode 10 still manage to be Literally ON FIRE!!! It was an interesting episode, because, as someone who doesn't speak the language, this ep has got my attention glue to the screen the whole time (the dialog were limited by the facial emotions were well expressed). Kudos to our 2 leads.

It's too bad Softy's Live recap will be delay tomorrow. Apparently she's got better things to attend......like the red carpet for "48th PaekSang Arts Award" in which Yoochun will be an attendees.

Some thoughts about the murder (which may be spoilerish, or may be off-base): All along, I've suspected that the body in the pond was the sister-in-law's, and that she was killed by the Crown Princess. After revisiting the Joseon-era scenes to do a little sleuthing, I believe that even more strongly and I know others do to). Here's some of what I've pieced together so far:

Clue #1: The revelation that "Park Ha" = lotus flower, a.k.a. "Bu Yong" (Joseon Park Ha's name). In ep.1, Hwa Yong (Joseon Se Na) refers to the pond as "Bu Yong Pond". In ep.8, Yi Gak puts a lotus flower seed (saying it looks like Park Ha) in a fish tank (so the bu yong was in the water and was "swimming with the fishes"). Although he removed the baby lotus flower from the tank in tonight's ep. I'm guessing it'll get placed in the water again and may help Yi Gak put 2 and 2 together. Also in ep. 8, we saw that Tae Yong had done a sketch of a "bu yong pond" with a butterfly in it. (Seems like Bu Yong was part of his subconscious memory.)

Clue#2: The way the images of the floating bodies were presented. Soon after seeing the woman's body in the water, we see Tae Yong's, which gives us the idea of parallel destinies. At one point, the images are superimposed so that it appears they form one being. In another shot, it looks like their hands are reaching out to one another. (To me, that's a Big Clue.) These shots go by very rapidly-- I gotta believe that they're meant to give our psyches a message about the OTP being destined to be together. And lastly, the body just looks more like Bu Yong's to me-- shorter arms, wider hands. (Of course it may be some random actress's instead.)

Clue #3): The Bu Yong Butterfly of Destiny. Dressed in yellow, Bu Yong embroiders it. We then see an animation of a yellow butterfly and a blue butterfly, flitting about together. Yi Gak, dressed in blue, delights in it, and it sparks the repartee between Yi Gak and Bu Yong. Later, right after the body in the pond is covered, Yi Gak cries, animating the butterfly. It then flies into the future and onto Park Ha's shoulder. Being a Butterfly of Destiny, this is what draws Tae Yong's attention to Park Ha. (We learn that Park Ha was the first woman Tae Yong ever felt really attracted to = they were on course to complete their OTP destiny until Tae Mu mucked it up, necessitating Yi Gak to take Tae Yong's place-- at least temporarily.) Tae Yong draws Pak Ha and the butterfly on a postcard-- it looks just like the butterfly at the lotus-flower pond he had drawn in his sketchbook.

Clue #4: We know that Se Na/Hwa Yong does Terrible Things when she feels that her sister is taking something that is "hers". The face burning incident happened after the mom told Hwa Yong to give her hairband to Bu Yong-- I don't think she did it solely because she wanted to be the Crown Princess, but also because she couldn't stand the thought of going through life feeling deprived while her sister got nothing but the best. The last thing we know of that happened before the murder was Bu Yong's coming to Yi Gak and Hwa Yong's room to answer the riddle. It was obvious that Hwa Yong was already feeling plenty insecure by that point. (When her sister solves the riddle, we see Hwa Yong fake-smile, pour a drink, then we see the dead body again.) I perceive her as being kinda like Bong Gu in TK2H-- you'd better not bruise their egos, or else! I think that Se Na's gonna have a total meltdown and will try to off Park Ha again when it looks like Park Ha is set to get the classy mom, the wealth, and the guy. (And chances are that's right when Yi Gak will connect all the dots and will be able to save his beloved this time 'round).

Why make it appear that the Crown Princess had died? Prolly because their dad and his political allies wanted to cover up the murder and make sure there wouldn't be an investigation. Perhaps Hwa Yong inadvertently poisoned herself while she was dusting the dried persimmons with cyanide and died or became very ill. In any case, for some reason, I think the switch was necessary for the cover-up. Because it was common knowledge that Hwa Yong liked to walk by Bu Yong Pond at night, they had a plausible explanation as to how the "accident" happened, thus avoiding an investigation.

Thanks for the recap! Two in one day from you-- mighty impressive!

I dunno, I personally really liked this episode. I love the show when it's more quirky and funny, but I guess I just really appreciated the fact that Yi Gak...isn't an idiot. I mean, he was connecting the dots pretty quickly, and I liked seeing the plot speed up like that. And Micky's serious acting is pretty fantastic, so...

Yeah, no complaints from me, at all. I enjoy the grittier side of this show too!

...and I second it. The cute and fun has to lie low a bit to give way to Yi Gak's displaying his wit. I love how he came to confront Tae Mu of his lies. I just hope that the same goes with the ducklings, that they would also be given the chance (screentime) to use their brains to do some sleuthing along with Princey because it seems like they're just there for comic relief.

I have a feeling that Yi Gak and F4 will go back to the past but then Yi gak will come back to the future again alone to be with Park Ha. I'm pretty sure that this drama will have a happy ending and honestly it doesn't make any sense for real Tae yong to be with Park Ha because even though I'm sure he likes her, albeit being a reincarnation, Tae yong and Yi Gak still is different people. and Park falls in love with Yi Gak, not real Tae Yong.

My Ending:
Yi Gak decides to stay and get with Park Ha. But the duckling(Side kicks) goes back to their Era. And finding Tae Yong who everyone Assumes is the Prince. But the Side kicks realizes that its the guy that looks like Yi Gak so they take him under their wings. Tae Yong finds the look-a-like Park Ha and he falls inlove with her even though she has a scar and ends up marrying her and she becomes the princess which was hers in the first place.

Then Yi Gak finds out that his princess really died by accident because she met the look-a-like Park Ha close to the water to tell her to stay away from the Prince and she got so Mad that she fell by accident and died.

And Se-na dies by Tae-mu who accidentally kills her because he didnt want her to leave.

Ohh.. my happy ending.

I think that Yi Gak is going to find out who the murderer is, go back to Joseon just in time to prevent Bu Yong's murder (he'll find out somehow that it was NOT the crown princess who died but her sister). Because he was able to save Bu Yong, he has now altered the future. And in doing so, altered the destiny or fate of Tae Yong, who will be very much alive 300 years in the future and happily with Park Ha in the end! Yep, Yi Gak and Bu Yong together in the past AND Tae Yong and Park Ha together in the present. That's how I think it's going to end. They both will get their happily ever after! :)

The scene between Park Ha and her stepmom was precious. It really got me *here*.

Also, I've been reading all the possibilities that many of you have posted and I must say that you've all done a very good job. The only thing that is niggling at the back of my mind is: WHO IS THE ONE THAT OPENED THE DOOR FOR PH AT SN'S APARTMENT WHEN SHE WENT OVER TO LEAVE SN SOME GROCERIES?

If TY is, as some of you predict/hope, in NYC with amnesia, who could it have been?

Or have I been so clueless and it has been revealed that it was indeed Tae Moo? :D

sorry if my question seems dumb, but: does a lotus plant thrive in soil? Because for all I know, lotuses are of aquatic kind (unless there are some species that I don't know of). I asked because I wonder why YG transported the lotus sprout from water to soil (though I know it's a part of the plot development but it seems illogical to me, unless someone could tell me that it can grow on land).

Indicators that I'm now a certified RTP addict:

1. I went off to soompi thread only to find that they are discussing ep.12 already.

2. I registered at ionair.tv just to watch ep.12 live, but apparently the site's experiencing heavy traffic so I wasn't able to watch.

3. I looked for softy's live recaps of ep.12 only to find that it will be released right after the show ends.

4. I went back to soompi to hang out with my co-addicts, while some of them posted screencaps.

5. I kept on refreshing softy's site until I got what I wanted. And I saw that it was good. :)

All of this I did for the love of RTP.

This story is one among those kinda hard to predict... How will the writers gonna end it?
I'm having a wild idea, since this story is about leaping time anyway... how about upon Yi GAK and park ha have united their hearts, it'll be like that of the jumanji movie, where the players have reached the finish line and return to where they are about to start the game. Same thing with the Yi Gak and Bu yong at joseon era, and Tae young and Park ha at the present. All things will be at the right place with the right person.
all are happy both past and the present. well for me, that would be nice.

they have to take Park Ha with them to the Jeosun era since it was the sister who died. Well that just how i will write story, hahaha. coz i don't want them to leave Park Ha behind. She doesn't need the wealth, what she wants is the love of her 4 ducklings =)

I've come from lurking...

Man I love this show and your recaps of it. I know it's been said before, but I think that the body found in the pond isn't necessarily the princess's body. And if Princey believes that someone might try to kill whomever died in the past again in the future, then I'm going with the idea that this fire is an attempt on Park Ha's life and that maybe her past reincarnation was the one that died? Just sayin'

Either way, I REALLY am interested in seeing how this show will end. I mean, Park Ha and Princey are meant to be! Are they not going to end up together after all, because he has to return? And even if he does return to the past and meets with Bu Young, she isn't Park Ha... they're not the same person, even if one is a "reincarnation" of the other... Even if they share extensive similarities, they are not exactly the same...

This show!
