Joo Ji-hoon hits roadblocks on the way to dramaland

It’s been seven months since Joo Ji-hoon came back from army duty, with what was supposed to be a clean slate after he was busted for drug use back in 2009. And though he has successfully completed filming his first comeback project, the film I Am the King (due out in August), television just might not be ready for him to return.
Joo was rumored to be cast in the Ji Jin-hee sageuk The Great Seer, originally slated for SBS’s current season. He ended up not being cast, and there are rumblings that SBS was wary of being the Big 3 broadcaster to un-blacklist Joo Ji-hoon while KBS and MBC weren’t willing to budge, and thus pulled his name from the roster. (It’s not clear that SBS was necessarily caving to pressure, but it seems likely that the KBS/MBC stance is more fact than fiction.)
Well whatever the reason, he’s now rumored to star in a different SBS project, the 50-episode melodrama Five Fingers, from the makjang hit-makers behind A Wife’s Temptation and Temptation of Angels. But it’s not all smooth sailing, because since the possible casting announcement has surfaced, the reaction online has been quite negative. SBS has reportedly called emergency meetings to discuss the situation. No matter the outcome, it’ll be interesting to see how the broadcaster handles the online reaction.
If the hurdles clear, Joo Ji-hoon might be starring in his first drama since 2007’s Mawang (The Devil). If not, he may have to carve out a film-only career for a little while longer.

i agree, it's a shame he is not being allowed to redeem himself. i don't condone the use of drugs for recreation, but if someone has given up the habit or use, they shouldn't be condemned forever, it's unfortunate for him.

Hell, countries like the US and the UK seem to revel in famous' people bad behaviour. The paparazzi industry wouldn't exist, or would at least be a lot smaller, without it. See Charlie Sheen phenomenon. I know, by the amount of memes that his spectacular breakdown created, that a lot of people found his antics funny, but I just thought it was pathetic and lame.

Actually, most of these behaviors are actually mocked, but because of America's lame sense of humor, casting directors tend to believe that any popularity is better than no popularity.
About Joo Ji-hoon, I definitely think that he deserves another chance. The netizens are going too far. If he slips up again, then feel free to condemn him.

I don't think we revel in celebrity bad behavior. For some folks there is a kind of malicious spite, a joy that someone so rich has gotten into so much trouble. For others, it's more of a merciful reaction. We know life is hard and that life is probably really hard for famous people so we don't hold their troubles against them. And some people do revel in bad boy behavior because the US has a tradition of liking outlaws, badboys, etc and the UK has its "robin hood" anti-establishment sentiments as well. You can't really judge a whole country by how it treats its celebrities.
As for Joo Ji Hoon, I think it's a shame he got in trouble just because he got caught. First, he shouldn't be taking drugs. But just because he was caught doesn't mean other celebrities aren't taking drugs or over-doing it with alcohol. The problem with judging those who are "found out" is that it sends this false idea that everyone else is perfect. The hidden subtext of this is: Obviously "appearances" is what matters and celebrities should be hypocritical enough to "appear" respectable. If they were more merciful to their celebrities, celebrities wouldn't have to hide their depressions, their weaknesses, etc..and would seek help.
A judgmental environment only leads to secrecy, suicides, depressions. If people give us such happiness by sharing their talent and giving us entertainment, we should be more merciful to them instead of sniping at them over the internet.

the american entertainment industry has something for everyone.
titillation sells - there is a sizeable slice of the population that will buy magazines and watch shows of cringe worthy activities by the celebrities.There is Snooki and Kim Kardashian for those who like bawdy, in-your-face-sexy, trashiness.
Then there is Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts who are oscar worthy actors. And then there are hosts of others in-between. action star, do-gooder, husband-stealer rolled in one? - angelina jolie. cute, responsible, fresh all american? emma stone. there are examples of the male entertainers as well.
Korean entertainment industry on the other hand is not as diverse. everyone is fearful of keeping pristine images and avoiding 'scandals' as laugh worthy as rumored romances with co-actors.
i recently read that Yoo In Na is may not be considered by We Got Married producers because of Ji Hyun Woo's 'proposal'! for pete's sake!

So true. However, it may seem backward and unfair to most people used to these types of "scandals", it is probably also one of the reasons why Korean entertainment was able to little by little penetrate different markets. They offer something different. Less intrigues and scandals. It shows in the kdrama stories that they successfully export...less sex and violence. BUT, I wish the Korean audience will be mature enough to see the difference between what they see on screen and the way the actors live their personal lives.
Second chances, hello! The guy probably learned his lesson well so it would be a shame if they stop him from doing dramas.
So the military stint is not enough? I guess it depends on the popularity of the celebrity. There are other celebrities that were questioned and given warnings and yet they are still moving and grooving on the stage. JJH is probably not big enough for the BIG 3 to readily accept him.
Oh well, the politics of showbusiness.

I know I'm the millionth person to say this but this is a really great point to bring up. Thank you! ^_^
Currently, the U.S. has a very different idea of celebrity. If anyone's ever watched an episode of Jersey Shore (or any reality show EVER) most people would notice that it's not that difficult to become famous in the States.
But if the clock turned back to the 1950's and even earlier, the celebrity culture was very similar to how modern Korea and even Japan operate. Idols are expected to maintain a very clean and wholesome image. No public relationships, no reckless behavior, no revealing clothing (that one's more for the girls than the guys) and always appear likeable and happy. Follow those rules or suffer the consequences.
In addition, from what I remember reading this was Joo's first offence and his one and only known time using drugs. Plus he wasn't the only celebrity involved. Why they keep pointing the finger only at him, I'll never know.
And I don't mean to throw stones at glass houses but who remembers G-Dragon's bust for smoking marijuana? that happened last year, but he's still maintaining a successful career regardless. Joo's arrest happened in 2009. Part of his "reflection time" was spent on army duty.
That being said, I do not condone illegal drug use in any way shape or form, but isn't it time everybody moved on?

in the 1950's... yes they had to keep up their pristine innocent idol/actor images. But behind closed doors, they were doing drugs and getting all drunk having illicit affairs. Which the public did not know about or chose to turn a blind eye on.

I also compared JJH's issue with GDragon's but I guess, the drug that was used was way different. There's a huge difference between ecstasy and marijuana. JJH was arrested while GD was just invited for questioning.

Okay, I realize that, for the sake of brevity I was generalizing here. Of course I don't mean ever single US/UK citizen thinks Charlie Sheen type of behavior is acceptable, and obviously the reaction was more mocking than actually finding it funny.
I'm talking about the way the entertainment industry works in general, and Hollywood is a prime example of that but it happens in other countries as well, sometimes spilling into other areas like politics (see Italy electing Berlusconi). However, you have to admit that celebrities are given far, FAR more chances than "regular" people when it comes to crimes.
Remember Chris Brown?. Yes he was shunned for a while, but he just won a grammy. How Mel Gibson is not in jail yet I'll never understand.
By the way I am not the kind of person that goes around badmouthing celebs I don't like, and I don't read gossip mags because I simply don't care enough about these people's private lives. I just think that our society in general has always had a problem with the way they handle "famous", rich and "talented" people. If you're taught that your actions have no consequences, that you can do whatever you want because you're rich, then why not break the law?

I agree with this. If he learned from his mistake and is trying to do better, why continue to ostricize him? If we did this everytime someone effed up, they'd have no oppurtunity to try and become a better person. Not to mention, it's not good for ones emotional health. I certainly wouldn't want someone to hold my shortcomings over me for forever and a day. And I say this as someone who's not even a big fan of his.

I don't know his story but addiction is a horrible illness. He payed his dues, clearly. This stance against him is cruel. If anything they should be showing forgiveness to give the impression that anyone who turns a new leaf should be rewarded and not punished. With how they're going about it it makes me think why get clean at all? Shit, that's how I would react. This guys tough just for sticking with it and not giving up. So many others would of regressed.

why do anonymous netizens get so much attention from koreans? I read somewhere that an average anonymous spiteful netizen is a young male (age 18-24). i find it weird that anonymous, digital posts get precedence over live, vocal ones.
I hope the courts punish the netizens sued by Song Hye Ko. That will set a precedent to not tolerate these idiots.
Ji Hoon is a phenomenal powerhouse of talent. He is one of the very few actors of his generation with a broad range and depth. If movies will have him let him continue acting in films.

seriously. While I'm on one hand it's nice that Korea takes drug use seriously, on the other.....he paid under the law, did 2 years in the army, and is apparently clean. He should get another chance.

I'm soooo torn up over this news -- as much as I want to see Ji-hoon back on the small screen again (because he was freakin' awesome in "The Devil"), the other actor being highly considered for the lead role now is Ji Chang-wook. And I don't want My Precious to be uncomfortable being put in such in a possibly awkward position if he does accept the part. ARGH!!!

It seems that now SBS, Keyeast, and most of the Korean major news sites are reporting that this is a done deal and JJH is officially cast in "Five Fingers." Let's see if this does officially stay 'done'... or if the crazy netizens will start stormin' the SBS Castle in response. :)

I really liked him in Antique Bakery. I hope that if not in that drama being offered, a cable drama would give him a chance at a comeback. Like most here, I am also against drug use, but ppl are not perfect and he was young. He has most likely learned from his mistake and wants to continue doing something he is good at. He should get a chance.
Can you imagine if ppl like Robert Downey Jr. (whom I really like) and Britney Spears (whom I don't care for),and most of Hollywood, were never given a second chance? I think if celebrities really put an effort to change they should be given a second chance.

the key difference is the american entertainment industry does not give much importance of online chatter. the korean industry on the otherhand is obsessed and bullied by the so called netizens. its a quirk of their super-connected culture i guess.
s. korea's internet connectivity was very fast resulting in changes in their interpersonal, social behaviors as well. there are a lot of good analyses on this (especially true of the younger generation with rise in depression, suicide and obsessive tech related behaviors).

You make a very good point. I guess I am absorbed almost exclusively in the realities of SK lives only as shown in dramas and of the bits and pieces shown of celebrities(which is not real at all), NOT the real people and the real culture.
There is so much I do not know. The only way to find out would be to purposely seek out the information (specially when it's related to the negative stuff I suppose would rather be kept under a rug).
As you wrote in the USA netizens do not have the power it does in SK. I think that power is too much. People tend to be fickle.

The opinions of netizens definitely do play a huge role, but it's also because of the vast differences between the two entertainment industries. At this point, Korean stars tend to have to uphold a "perfect" image. (No scandals, no public relationship, perfect skin, etc etc)

No we won't--let's get serious. The majority of imported stars from Asia are stuck playing stereotypical and/or sidekick roles. When will there be a male lead who is Asian? *cough* Airbender *cough* (Aang is a sanskrit name and he's basically based on Buddhist Monks...! Duhhh...) Must I point out Bruce Lee and his son?
Domestic stars don't have it easy either. Daniel Henney is only half and since he actually looks Korean (from his adoptive mother) he had to jump ship to Korea to get half-decent roles as did many in the K-drama land side that ditched US ship. (Keanu Reeves got a reprieve since he can "pass") Racism is real.
At this point, career wise-right or wrong, groveling and starting from the bottom is probably better. Sad as it is, considering the strikes, and the enforcement of army duty Korean media seems very tied to the government...
I think the studios want him to show trust before taking the financial risk. Because in Korea, unlike the US, actor's behavior often reflects on the studio/production as well. (See Yoon Eun Hye when her agency wouldn't pay her and how that reflected on Coffee Prince. Or Myung-Wol's stint)

As someone else mentioned, maybe the cable stations will give him a chance. I like what is coming out of the cable stations better these days, anyway - TvN is just knocking it out of the park with their dramas.

I live in the U.S. too and as a Korean American I'm ashamed of my
ppl. They can't forgive or have compassion even when the poor man has paid his dues and served in the army for 2 years. They care 2 much about the netizens say and they can't be ballsy enough 2 say enough w/ ppl opinions let me do wht feels right! I'm not angry but tired of the netziens trying to rule ev'ry move in the entertainment business in s.korea stop giving the netziens power & control. You are grown men & women (mgmt. agencies) you can make adult decisions w/out going to the internet first imo! That is the last I have to say and I hope Jjh will be strong and have hope & not care wht others say it's hard when you live in seoul. I wish him the best and hope to see him in the small screen again :)

Aren't the stations being hypocritical? There are so many other issues wrong within the stations themselves. Including censorship and freedom of the press. Now they are banning someone who paid his dues for his mistakes.
So this is a society that doesn't give anyone a 2nd chance then? I pity all those ordinary citizens who have ever been charged with THC use. Did the stations appoint themselves as society's moral barometer or what?
They are supposed to be concerned with the censorship board ratings of the drama. Who are they to interfere in the actor's private affairs.
Gosh. I am not a rabid fan of his. However, if you don't give someone a 2nd chance in their chosen profession/ job- it makes rehabilitation/ assimilation so much harder.

Come on everyone deserves a second chance, everyone makes mistakes, however bad, its how you deal with the mistake is what counts.
He has paid his price and now ppl should forgive and forget, (although its not their business to forgive) its his personal thing.
I hope we see him soon in a drama, but frankly speaking he does seem to have lost a lot of weight...plz fatten up a bit

Dang, I was waiting for him to come out with something. Anything! It's gonna be a long and rocky road to make Korean viewers accept him again. Maybe he should start small first.
Most Korean actors that I see, like to go off to the army with a bang, like one last hit/mania drama before they leave and come back with everyone greeting them with open arms and a high profile project. JJH is unlucky in the sense that he left at his lowest point and ppl do still remember that. He needs a sleeper hit, pronto!

Well, it's obvious that the Big Three (MBC, KBS & SBS) may pretend to be the ruling power but it seems that the real power behind the throne are netizens - and how sad (and blackly amusing) is that? Or perhaps the Big Three are using the netizens as a justification tool for the ongoing persecution of those subjects who have offended TPTB.
This kid has paid his dues, but it might never be enough.
I also wonder what happened to the movie actress/mule Yoon Soel-hee - she sang like a canary when caught, naming celebs left and right as her customers.

It's a shame to have networks capitulating to gossips on the internet instead of showing moral leadership by offering someone a second chance. Vicious gossip is at least as harmful a sin as drug use. Gossip hurts and sometimes kills.

this is so annoying to me because i do not get how anyone sees personal drug use as a HUGE moral failing compared to killing/raping/assaulting people.
yeah addiction happens but those two drugs have two of the lowest rates of addiction (this is why they're "party" drugs). and if it wasn't this, it'd be alcohol. alcohol is far worse to me bc it's legal, very addictive, readily available and if any of you have had to deal with anyone who is an alcoholic, you def can see how alcoholism affects not only the user, but an entire group of people around that user.
hell, my scorn lies more with celebs who drunk drive (how many stars have had DUIs this year alone) compared to a guy doing K at a douchey nightclub
full disclosure: this is from someone who was vehemently vegan straight edge and to this day doesn't really drink or do drugs.

his project to date was indeed Goong, but he was a newbie, understandable.

This is so out of hand now. The guy just wants to get back into acting again and frankly I want to see him get back into it too. SBS, please, just help a guy out and give him a CHANCE. People change. He's clean, he's payed for his actions more than enough and now he just needs something that'll tell people. You know...I'm still the talented actor I was before; I will continue to be.

Goodness, gracious, great balls of fire. Give him back to his fans, let him do dramas, movies, plays, or whatever. He is a talented man. Can you big TV stations please do something good to him and to his fans?
Jihun is a changed man and he is one who is well loved by thousands of fans not just in Korea but in Japan, Taiwan, etc. Let him do the drama!

Why JJH was becoming such a ppromising actor before the bust. Although I hated his acting in Goong, he was great in Antique Bakery, movie with Min-ah, and the Devil. I don't understand how S.Korea moral system works at all. Drunk driving killers who put the body i the back of their cars or leave the scene of the crime, rapist, homophobes, and sexist are all allowed on tv and radio daily; but a young man who made a mistake that almost a teenagers experience once, is not allowed to make amends and move on with his career? Really!? *le sigh* I hope some broadcaster will have the courage to hire him. Perhaps he should try cable first.

Tis is how I feel about the situation.
Who is without sin, cast the first stone.
The netizens are super crazy over in Korea, I mean when I first read about how much power they yield, I was like WTH, that would never fly in the US.
I feel like he did his time, now let his man make his money by doing his job.
Netizens seriously need a reality check cuz if we looks into their lives, some need to be in jail or close to it.
People don't know how to respect other people's privacy anymore.
I mean just because I'm a fangirl of this person or that person doesn't give me the right to ultimately destroy their livelihood with vicious words and sometimes actions.
I'm an actor too and it is really scary to think about the craziness that my fellow thespians go through.
Sometimes I think people need to step away from their media device and go outside to see what is really happening in the world.

Poor JJH is the scapegoat for all the hidden drug users in Korea. Enough already. Everyone deserves a second chance. At least SBS is trying to do so.
I'd rather see Korea crackdown on the casting couch syndrome and the exploitation of young actresses, rather than this ongoing blackballing of one person just to make a point.
Oh, but then all those powerful men in kdramaland would be up in arms wouldn't they?

I am an American who loves Kdramas and films. I find this blackballing of Korean stars very much like when Hollywood went on a witch hunt for Communist. I do not agree with drug use but I feel if he served two years in the military which is akin to two years in prison...hasn't he redeemed himself? I will continue to watch Kdramas but I think the Korean film industries mind set SUCKS! Give the young man a chance...he would have been willing to sacrifice his life for your freedom.

I loved him in Antique Bakery and Mawang. I'm sad that since 2007 he's never done a drama project. Like others I do wish someone would give him a chance. I miss watching him in films and dramas. I want to see how else he improved since 2007. I like him with 2007 hairstyle, rather than today's.

He has long moved on. He has not wasted his time dwelling on his mistakes. Sure he had made a deep reflection and withstand public scrutiny, but he refuses to throw away his life.
It depends how you perceive the situation. Will he be a bad role model to the public or will he inspire everyone that it is possible to reform and become a better person?
I hope the three networks know what is fair.

That's one thing that I don't really get about S.K. It's like you screw up once and ta-da, you're screwed for life, no second chances nothing.
I mean, (not to target the west or anything), but if this kinda stuff happens all the time in the west but you really don't see their netizens going all out against them or anything. They get second chances. (Even the 'teen' idols who are expected to be 'role models' to chil (dren screw up every once in a while and yet society does nothing.) While I'm not saying that this is necessarily a good thing, I think that S.K really needs to chill and be more forgiving. For a country that's all about manners and behaviour, you would really think that they'd be more sympathetic?
Bringing the issue closer to home (I mean the Asian context), in countries like Taiwan and Hongkong, you see the top names of entertainments being slammed with drug abuse and sex scandals the list goes on) but once they've paid their dues, they are allowed to go out again and face the world, and it really intrigues me why korea can't do the same.
Look at the case of Kang Hodong and Mc Mong. They are very, very talented people and it's really sad to see such talents being wasted. KHD, MCM and JJH are all talented people. If only their netizens could quit bugging into the businesses of others.

I truly hope he is given a chance to return to TV. He has a wonderful presence and charisma which made his roles really enjoyable to watch.
Having said that, I truly do understand the 'harshness' of this situation. Taking drugs would be detrimental to most other professions too, such as doctor or sportsman, so why should being an actor exclude you from the consequences? The the cost of taking drugs IS your reputation and your honour. I respect the South Korean Entertainment Industry in that they appreciate this aspect and give it due weight.
Despite caution being on the stricter side, in cases such as this, where the person has truly repented and paid his debt, made amends, I hope for leniency and mercy. Though maybe some things can not be forgiven, I would proffer the sentiment that forgiveness is never cheap. It is weighty and for some people precious, priceless.
I understand that some people in this situation would find it hard if not impossible to forgive, and though I am quite unforgiving upon occasion, I would say that if netizens and drama production companies do indeed find the strength of heart to forgive him, his mistakes through opening up that door to such a hope, I would respect them even more. As Jane Bennett once said, 'we should not make him desperate.'
It must have taken a lot of courage to return, for Joo Ji Hoon to seek forgiveness in the first place. Most people can not break their ego to even ask.
I would whole heartedly support his return and I would admire the drama production that would proffer him that chance.

I loved him in Antique Bakery. I googled him not long ago and found out he was doing a play. I was ecstatic he was doing something and haven't given up. I would love to see him in something again. Big screen or small. Screw the big three, those hypocrites. I bet they put Ji An's shoe closet to shame with how big theirs are with all their skeletons lying around. He should go for a channel like OSN! I can totally see him channeling dark and broody with a Vampire Prosecutor-esque show. Fighting!

what are the most influential sites for the networks? it seems to me that even in only this post, comments support a second chance (un-banning) of JJH, and this site can't be the only one, i would think? or is it because this site is mainly frequented by non-koreans, it is not 'influential'? in which sites are the nay-sayers posting?
