Drama preemptions abound for the Olympic Games

Sad news for impatient drama viewers, which may be a redundant moniker. What, you can’t just give me my crack and then TAKE IT AWAY. The London Olympics will be taking over some major primetime broadcasting slots, and it looks like dramas will be preempted left and right. Everyone take a deep breath, and stock up on some behind-the-scenes videos and reruns to tide yourselves over for the next few weeks.

  • Gaksital (KBS, Wed-Thu) will air one episode each week for the next two weeks. So that’s Episode 17 this Wednesday July 25, and Episode 18 next Wednesday August 1. I do not like this at all. Gaksital will never forgive you!
  • A Gentleman’s Dignity (SBS, Sat-Sun) will most likely delay its final two episodes until after the Olympics, and is still working out whether it’ll delay for one or two weeks. Suffice it to say, preempting the final two episodes is decidedly un-fun. At least the main couple is in a good place before the break?
  • Ghost (SBS, Wed-Thu) will also most likely be delayed a week, and air its final two episodes August 8-9. This is probably the cruelest preemption as far as narratives go, since cutting out a week before the last episodes of a mystery thriller is just plain mean. Stay strong, people. You’ll make it.

So then following those preemptions of current dramas, premieres of new dramas will also be pushed till after the Olympics:

  • Faith (SBS, Mon-Tue) had always planned its schedule this way and is set to premiere Monday, August 13.
  • To the Beautiful You (SBS, Wed-Thu) has delayed its premiere a week, and will now start Wednesday, August 15 along with Arang and the Magistrate (MBC, Wed-Thu).
  • Five Fingers (SBS, Sat-Sun), the weekend drama that will replace Gentleman, will now premiere a week or two later, depending on Gentleman’s final schedule.

They make a patch for everything now, right? Where’s my patch for my drama addiction? *rocks back and forth* It’s going to be okay… It’s going to be okay…

This is just mean, why are they doing this, that means I would not watch ghost this week because if I do I am not going to be able to hold on that week to watch the ending... and a Gentleman's dignity how can they hold off the ending that is just mean they can find a place for the last two episodes. Hate this.

aw sucks.. No Gentleman's Dignity this weekend.. guess i'll just catch up on other shows or maybe dramas or maybe sleep instead or watch the olympics!

Either way.. we will all have to wait patiently.. which is going to be hard for most of us (including me) but Im going to use it as catch up on sleep and social time. :)

Thanks for posting the news about our fav dramas!

The preemptions won't bother me at all since I'm not currently watching any kdramas.

I think there will be more drama just watching the koreans compete in the olympics like in archery, where one of their best archers is practically blind.

I've rewatched the movie Pacemaker twice just to get in the right mood for the Olympics.

I guess this is where waiting for dramas to end before watching them comes in handy, lol.

Ahh, but I'm sad I'll have to wait LONGER. And I really want to see Gaksital )'=

I don't think I can make one episode a week of Gaksital, but on the upside, Joo Won, Park Ki Woong, and the Gaksital team may get slightly more rest now? I don't want my heroes and baddies so sleepy as the story is getting tenser.

What? I have to wait and extra week for ghost! That's cruelty! It's hard enough waiting for one week as it is! This is terrible news! I don't think I'll be able to make it alive! :(

Preemtion of Gaksital is tearing apart my heart TT^TT

On the other hand, our poor Joo Won + other cast and crew finally get a well-deserved break. Also, they won't be forced into live-shooting = better quality episodes and script...I hope?

Please sleep more Joo Won!!

Actually it is good news for me. I do love my Korean dramas but I love watching the Olympics. Probably watch a couple of hours a day so I don't have to make a choice.

My question- Didn't the Korean broadcasters know the Olympics were happening this year so they could plan ahead of time?

does this mean that all the drama productions' cast and crew could actually take a breather and rest better for awhile? if so, i actually wouldn't mind that at all! it's heartbreaking to see my favorite actors looking zombie-fied with each subsequent episodes...

Since Big is going to air its final episode tonight, I am getting excited for tomorrow because of the two dramas scheduled for Wed-Thu. To The Beautiful You and Arang and the Magistrate only to get popped out like a balloon. This news of delaying the dramas due to the Olympics made me scratch my head. How am I going to endure? *goes to the corner and sobs

less joo won :( there will still be 1n2d right?! RIGHT?! :'(

i guess the only good thing is that the gaksital cast can get more time to film, since they've been in live-shooting for the past couple of weeks. Joo won needs more rest ><

I'm fine with the thought that maybe Joo won and Gaksital staff will get more sleep. But... But... One episode is just... uh-oh.

And with Faith and Arang starting in August I am also kind of worried with them overlapping with Gaksital for too long. Because I should sleep and maybe have some kind of normal life too.

Just wondering why SBS KBS and MBC are all airing the Olympics. In Australia, only one local channel has the exclusive rights. I just can't get the point of having 3 tv stations airing the same games.

I was wondering the same thing. It's the same in the US with one local channel having exclusive rights. And other channels air reruns or summer tv shows.

GAKSITAAAL!!!
Well, at least they will be showing an episode per week. But... since I follow KBSWorld (classes have started, can't watch and wait for eps like before) would it even affect the schedule?
They air dramas, varieties and whatever else much later (they left off at ep 10, and am waiting impatiently for Wed for ep 11). Would anyone here have any idea how the schedule will be like?

Gaksitallllllll! if I scream your name enough like old Kang To and Shunji will you appear?

I was hoping to get a good dose of drama addiction before school starts in early sept but these damn olympics are cutting it close! I must have FAITH!!!!!!!! And I need by fantasy dosage (Arang + Faith) :(.

Though, I suppose this is a good time to catch up with I Do, I Do, White Christmas, and Sunny Happiness.

I remember the people working on the dramas have grueling schedule. Recall the Spy Muyeong (sp?). With the slower schedule, maybe they can rest and provide a fun AND polished endings.

Uh, anyways................................... Gakshiiiiital!

When I read this post I was all poised to fall to my knees and declaim to the heavens in agonising tones, "Why Drama Gods? Whyyyyyyyy????!!!!!!!"

ahem. Then I realised, actually, for these two weeks I will be at home in Ireland with my family for the first time in a year and a half, and they will probably appreciate me not lurking in my room for several hours getting high on KDramas.

sigh. Cold turkey is a bitch.
