Ji Hyun-woo reports for army duty

girlfriday: Aw, another one goes. Ji Hyun-woo, aka time traveler and In-hyun’s man Kim Boong-do, enlisted today for active duty.

javabeans: Predictably, the big question fans and reporters are asking (literally to his face) is: What about Yoo Inna? Ji Hyun-woo was pretty evasive, as you might expect of him, saying merely that he spent his last day with his family and that his last exchange with Yoo was to promise to return in good health. Boilerplate interview response. Although really, for once I feel like he can’t be annoyed at the questions since he’s the one who made the big public media to-do in the first place.

girlfriday: Right? There’s no confessing your love publicly and then going, What’s with all the questions? Ha.

javabeans: Don’t get us wrong, celebrities obviously have a right to privacy. But when you make the grand gesture expressly because it’s a statement to the public—as in, I love you so much I’m doing this even knowing they’re going to go crazy!—you figure the subsequent curiosity is part and parcel of your romantic moment.

girlfriday: I totally get why she didn’t show up to see him off, but I half expected him to give another declaration, you know, for bookending purposes. I like my narrative closure.

javabeans: Also, you have to assume that part of his reasoning behind making the big announcement was because he knew he was going to the army, and by outing their relationship just before his enlistment, there’s an element of “Mine!” to it.

girlfriday: Well yeah. It’s Hey, all other dudes! Don’t you think you can try to woo her away just because I’m in the army! I’m watching you!

javabeans: I’m not going to be quite so cynical to suggest he also did it to tie Yoo Inna’s hands… but you gotta admit that the big side effect is that it ties Yoo Inna’s hands.

girlfriday: Um, yeah, there’s no getting out of this relationship now. He goes to army, she waits.

javabeans: When you consider how seriously Koreans take their army duty, it would practically be a career-killer (okay, maybe career-maimer) for her to dump him before he’s officially out. The whole army-duty “I’ll wait for you” motif is such a huge part of the culture (and pop culture), and leaving a dude while he was serving is (1) basically every Korean guy’s worst-case-scenario fear, and (2) therefore the worst thing a girlfriend can do.

girlfriday: It’s as ironclad as marrying her, pretty much. Obviously, considering that the guy has to GO to army, it’s not like I feel bad for her. It’s just a separate set of pressures for her because leaving him would automatically make her the bad guy.

javabeans: Even if they mutually wanted to separate, they’d probably have to wait till he’s out anyway (isn’t that what Choi Ji-woo did, wait till Lee Jin-wook was out and then quietly end it officially?). It’s like waiting till the kids are in college before you divorce, only the kids are Korea. Watching. Judging.

girlfriday: Don’t break oppa’s heart!

javabeans: So is the real question then “Is Ji Hyun-woo super romantic, or is he just totally shrewd?”

girlfriday: Can I pick both? Because he does seem to be smitten with her, but also, you can’t deny it’s handy to have 49 million pairs of eyes making sure your girlfriend’s staying true. Just sayin’.

javabeans: No pressure!

girlfriday: Suddenly I want to send Yoo Inna a fruit basket or something. Girl’s gonna have a long two years.

javabeans: But just think of the welcome she’ll get: army abs!

girlfriday: Worth it!

Well, he sees himself as a musician first and an actor second; I heard he insisted on not having anything "done" to himself, not even braces. I guess he just is what he is, and I find that amazingly refreshing.

Also, his crooked teeth make him perfect for sageuks - I always laugh at the rows of pearly whites in all of these period dramas - Gee, those Joseon dentists were good! They might as well wear a wristwatch.

Lol, I kind of like his crooked teeth. They make him look more normal. There are all these swoony Korean actors that are perfect from top to toe with way too perfect teeth (Yoo Ah In, I'm looking at you) and it's a little freaky.

But you know a looooot of people in real life DO have perfect teeth lol so I don't see how that could be freaky. I don't have anything against his teeth, it's just that I don't see the correlation between his alleged crooked teeth and this making him look more normal. Should the actor with good teeth stuck some of theirs out?! :p Ok I guess that some people may go reaaaally far to look perfect...

Um, no amount of brushing and flossing is going to make crooked teeth go straight. For most people it seems to be a genetics issue: inheriting a small or narrow jaw from one source and big teeth from another. Back in the Dark Ages I had four perfectly good teeth pulled, just so the rest of them would have room to line up evenly.

I personally think she's too young and I hope they secretly broke up and will see how it goes when he comes back. But while army duty in america would mostly likely mean a foreign country in south korea for an actor he'll probably serve a train ride or two away so I guess they can date somewhat. Remember a certain foxy lady making a trip to see her younger boyfriend?

I was wondering about that... can't they visit? I mean, it's not an ideal situation especially if the relationship is new, but you could see each other occasionally and still stay in touch.

How does this whole Army Service thing work? I always get the impression from the web that basically people as if vanish off the face of the earth for two years.

And the day people enter the army, is it always such a big thing as those pictures above show? Is that just Ji Hyun-woo reporting or other men too? How do 'ordinary' people enlisting feel when the celebrity among them gets a whole entourage of fans? Seems like such a spectacle and I just wonder if you couldn't just, uhhh, enter quietly?

Either way, I don't know how I feel about him now. It seems kind of f'd up he made this huge public declaration without discussing it with her at all. He basically tied her to him. She is now stuck for two years. He kind of looks like a tool.

They're officially dating. She announced over her radio show shortly after the public confession. They also went on a date, or at least told the press they did the day before he went into the army. Who knows if she'll wait - she did make it public that she wanted to date him. Who knows.

My friend who loved him in QIHM reverted her stand (to mehhh) due to his public declaration of love and imminent enlistment. It ties YIN both personally and professionally since she's an up and comer.

It's a precarious situation for both since it's a new relationship. Getting caught up with the character's emotions and being in close proximity with one's co-stars 24/7 doesn't help any. Oh wells. Since they're both adults they obviously know what they're getting into.

Good Luck Hyun-woo. Stay save.

Everyone always talk about these entertainers go in the army and just disappear for two years. Sure, they won't be acting or singing but don't they get leave (vacation) and can meet their girlfriends?

I was in the US Army back in the 1990s. Sure, in Basic Training, the Army owned us nearly 24 hours a day and we only got a half day off a week on Sunday Morning when we were allowed to sleep in until 7 am.

But once we got to our units, we had free time in the evenings and on the weekends. We were free to leave base and have a social life. Of course, now days, you could get deployed to places like Afghanistan, you are pretty restricted to the base. But the soldiers are allowed leave (vacation) and return to visit their loved ones.

Back to Korea, it seems that nearly all the Korean soldiers are based in Korea. Don't they get time off to go home? Korea is a small enough country where the soldiers could make a visit to their home in just a few hours so they could see their girlfriends. Am I missing something? Are they restricted to their base for the entire two years?

Required fields are marked *

I hear....though I could be wrong....that they need special leave or something to leave the base(s) at all.

But yeah, there would probably be a LOT less backlash sentiment towards man. duty if they got more freedom after the initial basic training.

I do think that they get some vacation time, at least that is my understanding. Huyn Bin had some vacation time and he was seen having diner with friends when he was out, so did Lee Jin-wook, who was spotted with Choi Ji-woo (on what seemed like a date) during one of his vacations out of the base.

0

Required fields are marked *

yes, they get vacation time, but it's only a few days a year, and the bases are usually far from the city. They also don't get to have personal computers, so no regular internet usage (I think they have to pay to use the computer lab, but im not too sure about this point). Also, fore some weird reasons, it's expensive to call into/out of these army bases. I guess money won't be an issue for these celebs, but it's still not many chances for communication

I totally disagree. People keep on saying that he is tying her up which is not true. have you guys listened to her confession or listened to the two radio broadcasts he guested on. Why do you guys think they will break up. Same thing occurred after the so called confession ( which was an announcement) people back-lashed him stating that he is inconsiderate, it's one sided love, why he didn't confess to her privately. Guess what, in her radio broadcast after they were spotted dating she confirmed that she knew about his feeling while filming the drama and she started to have feeling for him as well, thus, it wasn't a confession during QIHM finale fan-meeting, but, an announcement. It's too soon to speculate that they'll break up. I'm more in the positive side, we don't know what the future may bring. I personally don't know either of them. But I watched several JIW interviews and variety shows he appeared on. In my view he is a sincere and honest young man. I'm an optimistic person, all I can do is wish them luck , and will definitely await for his return after completing his two years mandatory military services. Why criticizing them, we don't even know them.

Agree. They both seem very sincere and straightforward to me. In addition, in her radio broadcast, Yoo Inna stated that Hyun Woo had said that for the first time in his life he wanted something (her), and he didn't want to lose her. So he did what he needed to. So I guess that's back to romantic and shrewd! or at least romantic and proactive, and acting as if dramaland's opinion is not more important than real life love. I don't think it's more makjang than that :-) (Gotta watch out for us kdrama-watchers - always suspecting unsavory hidden motives!)

JHW holds a special place in my heart! Always liked him, not always the dramas but there was something about him and his portrayal of his characters. Not sure what the big deal is about waiting. Surrounding by MS people and their families who have sent their love ones off to fight, the waiting should be a lot easier for them than the ppl I have known. If its really true love, there should be no problems for them. They'll write, call and there is always leave. Granted, based on what I've learned about the Korean culture, it will be a tremendous burden on our poor YAI's shoulders but again if this true love, boy will the wait be worth it! JHW and post MS abs? It will be a sight to see, ladies!

JHW is probably going to do office desk work in the military or the drama/theater route that most actors/celebrities do when they enter military service. If anything, they can still date, but it'll probably be really low key. Army duty can range in so many different positions.

That's why Hyun-bin going off to the Marines was so applauded for--because he's going into an actual, physically difficult training to be part of it.

0

I was just going to mention Hyun Bin did not go that route and boy does he look good!! Last picture I saw, he was built not skinny anymore! Please Hyun Bin, stay that way!!!

0

Errr actually that is not it. They just got the office desk work if they suffered some kind of accident and can't handle much physical work. For example, Heechul from Super junior suffered a car accident in the past and had some broken bones making him not able to serve physically.

Kim Nam Gil also couldn't serve a physical work but just aoffice desk one because he had health problems too.

Not sure if JHW will be a office desk. Did he suffer any kind of accident? I'm not sure.

They don't go easy on the actors/idols just because they are actors/idols at all. It isn't them who choose it but the army.

Maybe I'm in the minority but I think MS as it is now should be abrogated. It's just not valid anymore if you think "strategy & defense of the country". The only good thing for SK is that it takes men out of the work market for 2 years and so helps with unemployment.
I like my chocoabs like the next girl and maybe more but they can have that with coaches and fitness clubs.

I don't know that I agree with you on that, Mysti, if you consider that SK and NK are technically still 'at war' - it makes sense to have hundreds of thousands of ready-trained conscripts available in the general public to beef up your active military force.

Required fields are marked *

I'm all for having a Defense system but trench warfare is from the last century: Wars are won by drones and cyber attacks now, not by soldiers on the field. Also, even if China "officially" helps NK, it's not to their advantage to have a war between the 2 Koreas: The statu quo is better for everyone (China included) and even if on paper both countries are still at war, in practice it won't happen. Can you imagine NK attacking SK? For what reason? Land? Spreading a communism in agony? N Koreans know retaliation would be massive and definitive. Men in power want to stay in power and also want to stay alive, on each side of the DMZ.

I was in the Army here when they began their draw down. I did 10 years on active duty.

Yes, there's a lot of a technology and how wars are fought is changing. However, there's still an awful lot of feet on the ground and an awful lot of actual humans dying as the result of actual human activity, from what I can tell.

Do I think that NK/SK will ever fight again? I don't think anything is impossible. I pray for it, though.

4 years near what used to be the border of East Germany before the unification was a horrible time! EG so much as started too many engines, we were on alert! I imagine SK/NK is the same way. Times have changed and so has the method of warfare. But it does take both (on the ground and technological warfare) nowadays.

0

We were in FRG at the same time, then, MsB, but I was on the other side of the country.

Sorry to disagree with you but I just watched Road Number One which is a war movie about the first year of the Korean War. Wow! Not only is it the best war movie I have ever seen but gives you insight into why Korean men must do military service. Super scary when China got involved and came marching across the border with North Korea. Also, now understand why the US sits on the 38th parallel.
This movie has a beautiful love story too.
I believe these two have what it takes to make this a lasting relationship. JHW and YIN stay strong in your love for each other.

speaking of MS, methinks Hyunbin will be overcommercialized once he's out. JDG's agency will probably whore him out, he'll probably get a lot of big projects, big dramas, etc...overhyped status. I dunno why I suddenly am getting riled up, but I know this is going to happen, and I absolutely hate it when actors get overhyped.sigh~ i mean he was good in Secret garden but not that great.

Now if you talk actors in their 30, he is one of the formerly so-called A-list. And of course he will be courted when he is discharged, like it should be. Ranking actors is quite pointless and that's what I'm writing about here. Say "I don't like what he did", don't say "He is not good".
Labelling HB as an average actor is sincerely puzzling to me. Thanks for reminding me than all opinions exist in this world. :)
Can you give me names of better actors? Because I like to learn new things every day.

I've watched a lot of SF movies, absolutely. But I also have military people in my family than taught me things not anyone knows (airforce): Real things. And it's a topic that interests me so I'm quite aware on what's going on on that field. Thanks to worry for my sanity. :)

I love Binnie to bits. Even though he is my favorite, I'm fully aware that he is not the best actor out there and that there's still room for growth...

I am also not sure why you are bringing this up here "LOL"...but for someone who's not a fan you sure do seem to waste a lot of energy getting "riled up" over him. I suggest you spend more time focusing on people you like instead.

Yes, there was a lot of hype over SG, and over his subsequent service in the military, and there probably will be some hype over his return, but as someone else said that's just the nature of the industry...when something becomes as commercially successful as SG...

Also, I'd like to point out that he is perfectly capable of thinking for himself. Every actor must keep balance between the artistic and commercial when choosing projects. Though he may not always make the best choices, he is certainly not someone to be "whored out" by JDG's agency. If you want someone to respect your opinion, first show some respect...

I appreciate Hyun Bin being better than just a good actor. If you watched Friend, the Legend, or Come Rain, Come Shin (although movie itself tried to be too Art-house), you can see the depth of his acting skills. They might over-hype his return, but that's the industry. Hopefully he can find a great project to keep him in the status of an actor not just a star.

As for Inna, they didn't even have time to develop their relationships in my book. For him to go off to Army like this doesn't seem manly to me. Who cares about his abs? It's about a young actress's life and her career. Maybe because I think he is not that good looking to begin with and his acting being so so. Inna is wasted on him. She can definitely do better.

Before an actor, Ji Hyun Woo is a musician. He is a professional guitarist ( used to be the guitarist of the rock band, "The Nuts." I have seen him playing the piano. He composed his own music. He is a university graduate (Sungkyunkwan University). He can sing, he possesses a wonderful voice. Moreover, he is natural, no surgery. Tall, good-looking ( yes, to me he is dead gorgeous and his qualities makes him more gorgeous in my eyes). Yoo In Na is wasting her time on him? really? JIW equal talent.
Also, for him not being passionate about acting, he did a wonderful job in QIHM, he performed all the actions scenes himself, no stunts were provided. As stated before Hyun Woo equal talent.

It's kinda crazy that I'll be commenting on your personal opinion, but I won't be a proper In-Hyun shipper, if I don't respond and offer a defense for them.

They developed feelings for each other over the course of the filming, which was over several months. They realized this in middle of filming, and decided to put it aside until after filming, likely afraid that they're confusing their real feelings from reel ones. Sounds sensible and mature, right? After the public announcement by JHW, they took time apart from each other to examine their feelings. YIN returned the favor and publicly acknowledged their romance after a week. Still sounding sensible right? Although all these info are from their own mouths, and we do not know them personally, I think it would be fair if we give them the benefit of the doubt. They must have weighed the risks of the relationship and considered their individual careers before deciding that their love can withstand MS-separation. Good luck to them!

JHW may not be good-looking compared to his flower boy contemporaries, but he has his charms and appeal, which YIN obviously couldn't resist. :)

Oh, and 2 years fly by. It was only yesterday when we said bye to Binnie, and now we're talking of him coming back.

That's my 2 cents. I hope it comes across in a friendly manner, which can be lost in the interwebs.

It's very sad when people think someone is not good enough for another person based on looks and how well they do your job. Nothing to do with how compatible they are with each other, if they like each other, if they treat each other well. Sigh...

I should never comment on someone's look since it's all in the eye of beholder. I guess I touched on peoples nerves.

I so adore inna and just hope nothing heartbreaking comes out of this event.

dunno ~maybe it's just me....but standing in Yoo InNa's satin slippers I see.......

a *thumbs UP* tall guy --- with manners and talent .....and insanely broad shoulders.

He's proven himself professionally and will now honorably enter Military Service. Privately he may have skills that aren't ...............hrmmm..publicized...

I don't discount the possibility that SHE is the one who inferred/suggested/....asked... to have *a stamp on each other*.

He's not a bad catch. (sez me) ... ;)

He could have pulled a Yun Jung Hoon and married her. Han Ga In waited for her man, but I think they may have been dating longer beforehand.

On the one hand, I think SK celebrities take going public too seriously because everyone IRL dates and breaks up regularly.
On the other hand, hearing about all the Hollywood hook-up hurts my brain, so I a glad we don't have to hear about every kiss.

That's what I think he'll do, too. I get this vibe of serious and mature character from this couple, so when they go into relationship, they really plan for marriage. Unfortunately, they just knew each other and dated for short moment before MS, so that won't work.

Think this situation stinks...feel sorry for Yoo Inna..."tying her hands" is a polite way to put it...OMG can she dump a soldier on active duty? Of course, maybe she wants to sit around for two years...and they can make an announcement ala CJW/LJW. (the cynic in me still doesn't believe that one) However I am a romantic of sorts, and think that when HB gets out in December, he will get back together with SHK. Go figure!

They are cute together, but I thought.

javabeans: I’m not going to be quite so cynical to suggest he also did it to tie Yoo Inna’s hands… but you gotta admit that the big side effect is that it ties Yoo Inna’s hands.

javabeans: So is the real question then “Is Ji Hyun-woo super romantic, or is he just totally shrewd?”
girlfriday: Can I pick both? Because he does seem to be smitten with her, but also, you can’t deny it’s handy to have 49 million pairs of eyes making sure your girlfriend’s staying true. Just sayin’.
ROMANTIC AND CALCULATING.

Romantic and Calculating? What a perfectly grand combination. I never really thought of it this way, but thanks, JB and GF - I didn't think it was possible, but JHW has risen yet another notch in my estimation.

I am convinced that JHW is a sweet and innocent puppy. I felt really bad for him when he was excoriated by the press for expressing his sincere feelings. It is really beautiful to be young enough to be fearlessly honest.

If they were going to break up (which I don't think they will) I don't think they need to wait till after his enlistment. Didn't Hyung Bin break up with his girlfriend while he was (and still is) in the army?

I don't find his public confession "grand" or romantic but rather calculating. He's been around the block a few years now--he should know better. A "grand" confession can be done in private while allowing her some wiggling room if things don't work out.

Sounds like a control freak alert to me.

I wouldn't call it a " grand Confession" but an announcement to his fans. Have you watched the video when she confirms dating JIW. She states that she knew about his feeling while filming the drama. Therefore, him, saying that he loves her at the drama finale fan-meeting was not a confession.

one of my favorite couples on/off screen... but how bizarre is it that fact is now following fiction- they can torn apart by some higher power just when the romance is getting so sweet so whether it be some flimsy talisman or army duty, I hope they get their happily ever after. *Argh* I'm just a hopeless romantic, fueled by sappy k-dramas & QIHM being one prime example!

I still have this feeling they will part right after his army duty :( Even though i didn't like the fact that he kind of pressured her into this relationship, i still like him & she's get her award right after he finishes his duty ;)

But for the normal dude, it will only take a month of civilian life for the abs to vanish...=_= i rather not have to wait! but i did... the two years of being attached yet lonely singlehood is... argh... well... thats why bffs are still impt!!

Surely they are allowed time off base during their duty.

That's what I'm saying, I think 2 years and I think of it as him going off to school or something. I'm sure many people have had to wait waaay longer for spouses or boyfriends to come out of the military and have done it. The media makes it seem like an ETERNITYYYYYY~~~~ it's not. They'll be aiight whatever happens.

Hahaha, I totally got the feeling that JHW was "MINE!"-ing YIN with his public confession but I didn't think it to be shrewd or manipulative. YIN is a very attractive lady and she seems sweet. With him going off to do his Military Service I can see him getting nervous going "What if she starts dating someone?!"

There was always a chance of her rejecting his confession, but then again, I don't think he would have made it such a big deal if he wasn't a little confident that she felt the same way. She did say she knew of his feelings before it went LIVE in her radio show, so I'm guessing he confessed before and maybe just wanted to prove that he was serious in that loud, boisterous way that some boys like to do things, lol--and tell his fans, cuz fans apparently go crazy if they think you've been keeping secrets from them. Because they MUST KNOW ALL/sarcasm. But yeah, what I'm saying--she's a grown woman, could have rejected him still, it would have blown over.

And hey, the dude's new nickname seems to be "Yoo In Na's man" LOL, if that's not also "MINE!"-ing, I don't know what is. It was cute how she put that in her radio confession--which I felt was done in that same manner of JHW's public confession. She could have kept that low-key too and presented a nice little statement but she did a (very sweet) very public story, so I think they're both staking claims on each other, to be honest.

Love is a battlefield and you gotta do what you gotta do. I don't blame anyone and wish them lots of happiness and best of luck to JHW while he serves. I really like them both and I'm sure they know what they're doing and getting into.

I don't understand you guys. You keep saying he tie her hands but you didn't even read YIN's confession in her radio show and yet talk as if the girl was forced to date him.

lol

She must really like him for also confession in public that he is ''Yoo In Na's man'' she herself said it. Doesn't it also tie him to her? If he breaks up with her he'll be called a player/jerk.

You keep saying they won't last. Why not? I believe JHW is very serious about it. And YIN too.

Let's see.

You're absolutely right. I read some articles stating YIN's man. For instance, allkpop wrote " YIN's man, JIW, will be enlisted in the army on August 7" lol

I bet many people commenting here only heard/read about the confession, but, didn't bother to know her stance on this matter.
