Nice Guy: Episode 16

It’s time for some truth up in here, and that truth comes with its own dose of forced smiles and infinite levels of deception. Maru’s finally embracing his inner nice guy and pulls on our heartstrings while he’s at it, which somehow makes the cute moments in this episode the saddest thing ever. And then the actual sad moments end up feeling like a relief, because at least we knew they were coming. It’s that in-between time of wanting to be happy for our couple all while bracing for impact that’s hardest on the nerves.

EPISODE 16 RECAP

Eun-ki’s on cloud nine as she and Maru walk home, fingers firmly intertwined. It’s with a smile that she tells him she’s remembered who he was to her: “The one I placed all my bets on and loved. The one I liked so much that my heart would burst. Before I lost my memory, you were that kind of person to me.”

And Maru, struggling under the weight of his guilt, fights to hold back his tears.

They circle back to his old house where Eun-ki asks if he remembers her confession in the rain. After taking a moment to flashback to that exact moment, he finally answers that he does.

Eun-ki poses the same question now that she’d posed during her confession: “Is it possible?” As in, is it possible for them to grow old together, have children, and live happily ever after?

Maru doesn’t answer, and kisses her instead. She’s not one to be distracted as she blurts right after: “Let’s get married. I want to marry you, Maru.” She’s actually proposing? Oh, Eun-ki. I luff you so much, brain damage and all.

She’s on pins and needles as she waits for his answer, and practically cries with joy once he gives the okay.

I love that she wastes no time and takes him straight to a bridal boutique for some window shopping – she’s already picked out her ideal dress. Her head is spinning with all the things they need to do – plan the wedding, find a honeymoon spot, decide on how many kids they want, etc.

Maru’s bright smile during all this is somehow heartbreaking, but what really gets me is Eun-ki’s “how many kids should we have?” talk. When he suggests having one son and daughter, she scoffs at the idea – she wants nine. “And then we can set up our own baseball team.” So cute. SO CUTE. So why is it making me so uneasy?

But then, she decides against the baseball idea, because they should give their children the freedom to be whatever they want to be. Aww. She even has plans for how Jae-gil and Choco can participate, and we just know that all this talk means it’s never going to happen. Because dramaland, especially melodramaland, is a cruel mistress.

Jae-hee drinks alone in a dive bar surrounded by drunk ajusshis, and loses it when one tries to hit on her. She addresses the whole room as she shouts, “Do you think any of you are worthy of being in my company?” Spoken like a true elitist. Or someone who just really, really wishes that they were.

Min-young arrives to take her home, and it’s with a sneer that she wonders how many spies he’s got following her if he knew where to find her. He’s emotionless as he punches one of her drunk suitors away, but she’s lost in her memories. This was a place she and Maru would come to often, before she gave up everything for Taesan.

Eun-ki’s still high on marriage talk, and unsurprisingly wants to discuss how they’re going to be making their bed now that they’ll be in it together. Maru finally puts a stop to her: “Let’s get married after you recover your memory.”

He wants to make sure she won’t change her mind after she learns what a bastard he really is, even though she’s adamant that nothing could change her mind.

“Either way, now is not the right time,” he stresses. “After you recover your memory, if you still want to marry me… If you still want to marry a punk like me, have children together, and grow old together, then let’s get married at that time. If you still feel the same way you do then, I won’t let you go either. I won’t ever let you go, then. No matter what happens, no matter what anyone says.”

He pulls her into an embrace to make his point, and this is the first time a confession of his has brought me comfort. At least he’s finally giving us a sign that he’s not just going to go off quietly into the night once Eun-ki remembers, and that he’ll let her make her own informed decision when the time is right.

Min-young helps Jae-hee home and tucks her in bed, but when he tries to go in for a kiss, she turns her head away.

She’s still hung up on the Eun-ki thing, seemingly unable to wrap her mind around the concept of leaving Taesan for Maru when she left Maru for Taesan. Her eyes and words scream desperation as she struggles to convince herself that she’s the right one. She made the right decision… right?

Min-young sees right through her: “So you want to go back? Like Seo Eun-ki, you want to give up all of Taesan to go back to Kang Maru?” A tear slips from Jae-hee’s eye at his words because they hit home. That’s exactly what she wants to do.

However, he’s not going to let her waver. Because she wanted him to, he betrayed Chairman Seo and played a part in his death – there’s no coming back from that now. He really loves his car/road analogies as he tells her that he hopes Chairman Seo will be the only roadkill they come across: “Let’s not add Kang Maru to that list.”

Cue shivers of horror. When she demands to know what he’s planning, he throws back that Chairman Seo isn’t her only casualty. He knows Maru took the fall for her other one, and reminding Jae-hee of this works to keep her docile better than physical restraints ever could.

Maru and Eun-ki have flashbacks of the accident at the same time, only she still can’t recognize him as the other driver. With Doctor Suk’s words about finding out the truth to her accident still ringing in her head, Eun-ki uses Choco’s computer to google-equivalent the accident.

There are news articles detailing the scene of the crash, but Maru’s name is kept anonymous by the media calling him “Person K”. Choco grows increasingly more nervous as Eun-ki reads on, and doesn’t volunteer any information when Eun-ki asks her who Person K is.

Jae-gil comes home looking like death, because he met up with Maru’s neurosurgeon sunbae and found out everything about his hematoma. Medical ethics don’t exist in this universe.

He crumples to the ground, overcome with sadness. Maru has to beg him to keep quiet about this and not tell the girls, and takes him out for soju in order to try and explain that he’s not going to die.

Jae-gil is breaking my heart with how utterly and completely crushed he is, but he still manages to see through Maru’s front and threatens to tell Eun-ki and Choco everything if he doesn’t get surgery.

But Maru claims that it isn’t because of them that he’s refusing surgery. He’s done horrible things for Choco, and he figures he’s paid Eun-ki back for about half of what he owes her. The other half is up to her, because she chose to trust someone like him and needs to take responsibility for that.

He explains to Jae-gil that the surgery isn’t without its risks, and that he could die on the table, lose his memories, or become paralyzed.

Jae-gil: “Why do you always think the worst?”

Maru: “Because that’s the story of my life.”

With Choco in better health, and with Eun-ki having returned to him, Maru couldn’t be happier. He wants that happiness to last just a little bit longer, and promises Jae-gil that he’ll get the surgery afterward.

Jae-gil doesn’t believe him, and starts sobbing in the middle of the restaurant while Maru just pours himself another drink.

The next morning, Eun-ki and Choco stand face to face with a bowl of live loaches they want to cook for breakfast. Eun-ki puts up a tough front like, Oh, it’s so easy, but both girls scream when Jae-gil grabs one and chases them around the kitchen with it.

It’s so cute, and so family-like, which Maru realizes as he pretends to be asleep in the next room.

Maru [in voiceover]: “I hear the laughter of my friend, my sister, and my love. They are part of the most beautiful, delicious, and fascinating dream in the world that I could ever dream of. I’m afraid that if I open my eyes, I’ll wake up from my dream. So I can’t open my eyes out of fear. For this beautiful morning, thank you for gifting it to me.”

Eun-ki sneaks into his room and plants a kiss on his cheek. He smiles, his eyes still closed.

“I won’t be greedy and ask for more. I won’t expect any more. Right now, I am happy.”

Hey there, Tears. Wasn’t expecting you to show up before the half hour mark.

To contrast this warm and happy scene, we find Jae-hee sitting alone in her ginormous and very empty dining room.

She’s not alone for long once Jae-sik forces himself inside, and she coldly refuses him attention besides asking what she needs to do to kill him. “Hey, how would I know that?” Jae-sik replies. “Only you, who’s actually killed someone, would know.” Buuuuuurn.

He tries to play brother to her now, and passes off the blackmailing incident from before as an automatic reflex. If there’s one good thing about Jae-sik it’s that he’s honest, since he flat out tells his sister that Min-young wants him to kill Maru.

So, he’s come to see whether she wants him dead before he acts? How sweet.

We find him next at Maru’s house, and while Jae-hee refused him even one grain of rice, Choco feeds him the stew they all made for breakfast. Jae-sik takes one look at her with Jae-gil and declares that she’d be taken care of. You know, if Maru were to disappear.

Dude, these people are feeding you out of the kindness of their hearts, and you’re still thinking about killing Maru? I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, and Jae-gil isn’t either. His suspicions have been raised, at least.

Jae-hee follows through on her deal with Jung-hoon, in exchange for him spreading the word about Eun-ki’s amnesia through the media and stock markets.

Luckily, Joon-ha has put a countermeasure in place by announcing Eun-ki and Maru’s impending marriage. Which means (as Min-young explains to Jae-hee) that even if they oust Eun-ki on the basis of being professionally incompetent, everything will go to her husband.

Jae-hee brings this issue up with Maru, and threatens to tell Eun-ki about their past if he doesn’t call off the wedding. He takes it a step further and suggests that they take a picture while kissing and send it to her. Which, he realizes he’s already done, right?

Telling her that Eun-ki doesn’t live in the past but the present is what really hits Jae-hee hard, causing her to change tactics. This time, she pretty much begs him to reconsider.

He leans in close to make his point: “I’m telling you, I need Eun-ki. Now, without her, I can’t even go on for a day, Noona.” He drops his speech to call her that, and the once-endearing term has Jae-hee crying.

Once he switches back to calling her “Chairman”, the discussion is over.

Jae-hee catches Eun-ki in the hallway, curious as to whether she’s done any research on Maru. Eun-ki replies that she’s researched all she’s needed to, but is thrown for a loop when Jae-hee asks whether Choco still cries at night, or whether Jae-gil is still claustrophobic. Eek. Bad news bears.

Joon-ha pulls her into a meeting with Maru to explain the wedding announcement as well as the upcoming board of directors meeting, where her professional competency will be discussed. He hands over a cheat sheet of questions and answers she can memorize.

Before he leaves, Eun-ki asks him about the other driver in the accident. Joon-ha hesitates a bit before lying that the other driver was female, and that she was fine and compensated well and moved to another country so they’ll never hear from her again. Which, ugh. I’m disappointed in you, Joon-ha.

Eun-ki doesn’t believe him, mostly because the blurry outline in her memories is distinctly male (and distinctly Maru, but let’s roll with it). So she asks Secretary Hyun to do some fact checking for her.

Jae-gil paces outside of the audition room Choco’s in as he tries to digest Maru’s surgery postponement. Inside, Choco finds herself unable to work up the courage to sing and is ready to quit, but Jae-gil’s entrance stops her.

He explains to the judges that Choco’s voice is like Mariah Carey’s, and that she’s just shy around new people. So he asks for permission to help her out a little, and takes to the piano to play the accompaniment for “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys.

Choco starts out faint at first, but eventually belts out the song with all her might. As Jae-gil watches her, he thinks to himself, “Choco… Maru is having a hard time. From now on, let’s live a good life. Let’s live well.”

As Maru grows more anxious about Eun-ki getting closer to the truth, Secretary Hyun confirms that same truth with Joon-ha: Maru was the person Eun-ki crashed into.

But Joon-ha tells Secretary Hyun to withhold that truth from Eun-ki, and works with her on corroborating their lie.

…Not that it does them any good, since Eun-ki finds a mysterious folder on her desk containing the accident report. Driver one, Eun-ki. Driver two, Maru.

This instantly triggers a memory of the accident, and this time Maru’s face is clear as their cars rush headlong into each other. Eun-ki sinks to the floor in shock.

Maru comes into her office… to find her sitting calmly at her desk? Yikes. So now she’s hiding the fact that she knows?

As they walk to the board meeting, Maru’s words of encouragement are juxtaposed by Eun-ki’s returning memories of him – specifically, all the harsh things he’d said to her at the Breakup Beach. Things like “Do you think there was anything I wasn’t willing to do to get Jae-hee Noona back again?”

And as he pats her shoulder for support in the present, Eun-ki remembers how he’d patronizingly patted it at the beach, when he was chastising her for falling in love with him so easily.

Eun-ki’s face looks like it’s about to crack at any moment from the smile she’s forcing, but she manages to fool Maru and make it into the board meeting where she’s pelted with questions about the state of her brain.

Instead of using the script Joon-ha and Maru prepared for her, Eun-ki announces to the board members that she is in fact suffering from amnesia and brain damage due to her car accident.

“Like what everyone here is thinking, I have no intentions of hiding behind the person representing me,” she says. And if they determine that she’s not capable of running Taesan, she’s willing to step down and start from scratch as a member of the company. All she wants is a chance to prove herself.

Afterward, Maru praises her for doing well, because “That was the Seo Eun-ki I know.” As in, that’s the Eun-ki everyone knows. Maybe because it IS the Seo Eun-ki everyone knows.

There’s this moment where she fixes a smile on her face before turning toward him, quite literally putting on a mask. He just got his paycheck and offers to buy her anything she wants, so she asks for flowers, a purse, pork belly, and a kiss. Complete with a little eyebrow wiggle, which is cute.

So Maru goes out to get her all of those things, and you know it’s love when he even stops by the only coffee shop in Seoul just to get her specialized-yet-generic coffee.

It seems like she just sent him on a wild goose chase so she’d have time to visit her father’s ashes, and she tearfully apologizes for being late. This spurs a flashback to her childhood, where Dad had placed unreasonable responsibilities on her because of her future in Taesan.

“You cannot show your weakness to others,” Dad had warned her. “Do not trust anyone in this world. You shouldn’t show the real you to anyone.” He does mention her mom and how she betrayed him (I’d really like to know more about this), which might explain why he went a little crazy with trusting Eun-ki Lite. No wonder why she grew up with so many trust issues.

In the present, Eun-ki cries as she apologizes to her father, saying, “I did you wrong. If only I had not gone to Maru that day, if only I had not gone to see that bastard, maybe you wouldn’t have passed away.” Ouch. That’s a lot of guilt to shoulder.

Maru ends up waiting a long time for Eun-ki to finally show up, and when she does, she has to plaster another smile on her face.

He happily shows her the gifts he bought her, before giving her the last one: A kiss.

And though Eun-ki closes her eyes for just a moment, she eventually opens them and stares ahead, with Maru none the wiser.

COMMENTS

Ding dong, the bitch is back. I know that’s not quite how it goes, but I’m just so happy to have Eun-ki back again. Even if I’m not really sure what exactly is going through her mind.

It’s not hard to see why she’d be angry with Maru for playing her, though in this case it really does take two to tango attempt a double suicide. Unless she was just trying to kill him and didn’t care about herself, which would technically make it a murder-suicide attempt… but Maru knew what he was doing. Heck, they both knew.

And while Maru’s conversation with Jae-gil seemed to be made of half-truths (I’m not sure I trust him on this ambiguous surgery deal), there was an interesting line in there I latched onto, about Eun-ki needing to take responsibility for trusting him. Whether he honestly believes that or not is up for grabs, even though we’ve heard lines of this ilk from him before, though they normally seemed to be his way of shirking responsibility. Like, It’s their fault because they knew how terrible I am.

It doesn’t seem like he’s trying to wiggle out of his own misdeeds this time around, but it’s worth noting that Eun-ki had both eyes open when it came to Maru (toward the end, anyway), and made her choices with the ample knowledge she had. But, I admit I’d probably be much more on board with her newfound anger if she hadn’t instigated the amnesia-causing crash, something I just haven’t quite been able to get over. Despite all that, Maru got a hematoma for his trouble and has spent X amount of months rehabilitating her. That’s got to count for something eventually, right? If someone’s tallying up karmic points, please share Maru’s score with the rest of the class.

One of the relationships that’s really had time to blossom (even though I feel like “blossom” denotes something good and not unholy) is the perverse and psychologically abusive union between Min-young and Jae-hee. Surprisingly, he works in making her more sympathetic just by virtue of being more evil than she is, yet at the same time, he’s a product of her creation. But like all things Jae-hee touches, this one’s come back to haunt her in a bad way.

What’s most curious about their interactions is whether Jae-hee might be moved to make some right choices… if, and this is a big IF, Min-young wasn’t there to constantly remind her that she’s no longer fit for the rest of society. The fact that he now feels he has to continue steering her down the dark road of evil just because he gave up everything to join her on it is a thought-provoking one, and one I’m not sure I have the answer for. Is she partly responsible for what he’s become, or was he always this way and just needed the right opportunity?

But that ending? So perfectly cyclical. And so, so frightening. Maru did say that he looks at himself when he looks at Eun-ki, and nothing brought that home more than her forced smiles and her eyes-open kiss. Seeing as how she doesn’t have a whole drama to navigate the arc of vengeance-to-redemption, it’ll be interesting to see how she operates from here on out. No one’s going to come out of this fight smelling like roses though.

I literally just finished watching it right now. Our Eun-gi is just so angry right now, I'd hate to be in her path. I know Maru deserves everything that's coming to him 100% but I kind of agree with you. Maru used her and he's kind of to blame for Eun-gi's not being their when her father died. But isn't that kind of it? He's been pretty much on Project Save Eun-gi for the past 8 episodes. He's dying from a hematoma (which he has bc of her to begin with) so he can help her out, spent months taking care of her, bought her that cute North Face jacket + boots + pretty flowers + a handbag and even coffee. When is it enough?

I guess technically she doesn't know about the hematoma yet so I guess we'll see how that comes into play.

Anyway, loved the kitchen scene, it was so nice. Maru pretending to sleep while he lays there and smiles. Eun-gi sneaking a peck on Maru's cheek. It was kind of bittersweet to see Maru trying to savor those little moments because he knows they're coming to an end soon.

Please LKH, don't make this one a tragedy too.

Thanks for the recap! Only two more weeks T__T

I kind of think she has the right to be angry, at everyone, because if we assume she has all her memories back then she also knows that everyone including Maru has lied to her during her amnesia to keep her from remembering.

I love how Maru and Eun Gi are so much alike. Eun Gi with the lost memorie is Maru before Jae Hee betrayal. Maru right now is Eun Gi when they were together before the accident. And Eun Gi right now, recovering her memories, is like Maru during his revenge time. And both actors are doing best!

Jae-gil and Maru's scene broke my heart. I totally understand how Maru is reluctant to go for surgery at this moment when he's most happiest. Before the shit hits the fan, which it did, and which according to the majority opinion, is of Maru's own doing. I'm so worried going into the next episodes.

There's so many negative things coming: Eungi's anger and revenge, jae-sik's going to kill Maru?, Maru's hematoma...

Just hope that Eunki gets to lash out and quickly realizes that Maru truly loves her. Now I wish Maru wouldn't say/do so many things to paint himself as the bad guy. At this rate, even if he dies of hematoma, everyone will still see him as a bad guy, which is what he thinks he deserves.

Jae-gil: Please tell everyone Maru's a good guy. It seems that you're the only one who knows him well.

Thanks for the recap, HeadsNo2!

I thought you'd have only coffee shop in Seoul trademarked too! I'm surprised that Maru's sunbae-doctor kept his mouth shut for so long. Medical professionals in kdramas usually can't wait to break their oaths to uphold the privacy of the individual.

" the cute moments in this episode the saddest thing ever."-- I know, right? I should be happy that Maru was telling Jae-gil how happy he was, but I just felt so sad. And when he was resting while the others were laughing and squealing and his voiceover was telling us how happy he was...=**( Right at that moment, I felt the probability of Maru dying just upped itself to 80%.

I think Jae-gil's suspicions in the scene where Jae-sik was eating at their house was more because Jae-gil knew that Maru was in mortal trouble due to his hematoma- and not because Jae-sik was out to stab Maru in the back.

Sad that there wasn't too much more to the crash, except that I got the confirmation that Maru was willing to die too and that old Eun-ki was more messed up about the news of her father's death than I thought she was. I know Jae-hee was just being mean-spirited when she said Eun-ki left her dad to die while she chased after a guy, but I didn't think old Eun-ki really felt it such a huge sin.

Then I was disappointed that Maru didn't think of his sister when he decided that it was a relief to get killed by Eun-gi and that he didn't think to swerve. Sure Jae-gil could take care of Choco, but that's a huge responsibility and burden to put on your friend if it's something that could be avoided. And as an almost-doctor with a knack for saving people shouldn't he at least try to preserve Eun-ki's life?

Sort of depressing also to think that the not-an-accident brought them together again and gave them some moments of happiness just to be torn apart again.

but YAY for Eun-ki getting her memories back. I miss badass Eun-ki and those Jae-hee and Eun-ki scenes where they would try to take each other down. I hope she fakes the amnesia a bit more so she could find out who in the company is against her, so she could flush them out.

The whole murder-suicide just turns me off and I cannot shake it.

MRs done his part and then some to repay his debt to EG. Since he has received some compensation from TS (for the murder attempt on his life) and shared happiness with EG out of this whole fiasco, I'd say they are even.

The murder-suicide thing turns me off too. I can shake it off a little bit, but it still really bugs me as I feel like it's a huge blemish on what I feel is pretty much an almost perfect kdrama. And I'm afraid that it has been sort of romanticized and the effed-up-ness of it all has been sort of romanticized too.

this aspect is really bugs me, too.... about suicide-murder attemped thing. And another one is the false accusement MR has been received in earlier episode. That moment where once again they are repeating the same plot brought that memory again.

Because in my eyes that moment as where the conflict started and it seems that moment is no big deal. But for me is a big deal. Just like this Suicide murder attempt. I repeat the incident countless time. and when She changed lanes, the distance is not far enough to u had huge the oportunity avoiding it.

If I were EK at that time, when knowing the truth the incident, even when u know he looks healhty after the incident, Isn't more logical if u have to feel guilty for what u have done first, before put your own personal issue?
Or Am I too harsh? Am I too nitpicky, or is it my opinion is all false?

But I just assuming EK is just a mess up and flawed character at that time to acknowledge it. It makes me less harsh for her and MR, and nice guys overall. And understanding about the holes.

Maybe it was the drama slowing things down so we could get a better look at Maru's reaction, but it seemed like there was enough time for Maru to reduce the severity of the accident. He didn't have enough time to switch lanes, but I felt like swerving was a possibility. Having two cars steadily moving was just asking for trouble.

0

I don't mean for blaming all the situation on EK's shoulder though. Because, MR also taking apart for this mess... That's why I'm assuming he nurse her all this time because of this guilt?

But Her car way wayyy faster than MR. But it seems he was ready to join her crazy murder-suicide attempt and didn't willing to avoid it either.. so it could be blame by two parties.

0

Agreed. It would be sincerely trying to purchase this drama if EG tried to suicide alone. But no, she had to put in a murder-suicide attempt between the so-called OTP.

And for this reason I cannot in good conscious buy this MR/EG love story as told. It borders on SS and/or schadenfreude. To twist this around to make it beautiful in a tragic way or "romantic" is not a good thing. I just shake my head, and this is why I cannot accept a HEA for them. It the writer does so, oh well....

Nine kids. Please.

How do they tell their children that their mother tried to kill their father and then married a year later? Once it is talked about in their schools, etc. and reaches their little ears, the wounds of such an unusual union have been inflicted. It would happen once the other parents of the school children find out, and openly talked about it after being in shock and told their child not to play or associate with the Kang or Seo children. A parent's forgiveness is one thing, but using one's children as proof is another under the circumstances....EG could have another meltdown.

From this episode, I felt like Maru was a willing participant in this murder-suicide. It's already bad enough that EK was committing murder-suicide because she lost it, but Maru was game for it too- which makes it more messed up to me. (but was I supposed to think it romantically tragic and okay, because he was in on it too?)

I can still accept an HEA from them because I'm so invested in them and their OTP, enjoyed their other interactions, and do hope that they will be fixed (like how asshattery in rom-com heroes gets fixed by episode 16), but I think the writer or pd could have done a better job addressing the issue. For me, it's a not really so much a case of EK and MR having an asshat-moment and shouldn't be together, but more of a case of "writer? couldn't this have been done differently? Did you want it romanticized? couldn't the commentary on this moment be better fleshed out? And like missjb said, isn't the lack of remorse illogical?"

My obsession with this one moment is sort of strange because so many dramas I've loved have done more messed up things with their characters and the situations they get into.

Yes, I've overlook a lot in kdramas or any dramas for that matter, but some things I just cannot. Murder is one of them.

JH does not get off the hook either....She has to either die trying to save MR or EG or go to prison for the chairman's death.

I stopped watching and may not go back to finish eps 10-20 if the ending is not handled in less than a kosher manner. This is a melo/thriller so I was not expecting HEA.

0

I don't see it forbidden if they end up together . But in real life, It almost impossible. that kind of incident is too traumatic, right?

I have no idea if this drama will have a satisfy ending, or happy end to pleased the fans, or tragic ending. I hope the ending will fit the narrative purpose.

I still have no idea How..

"Medical professionals in kdramas usually can’t wait to break their oaths to uphold the privacy of the individual."

But you know, this happens so often in Kdramas that I'm not sure if it's a Kdrama thing or if it's that there really IS no such thing as doctor-patient-confidentiality in Korea, or if their stipulations are different.

I mean, for sure, in the States, no matter what I discuss with my doctor and no matter how worried my mother or grandmother is for my health, he, by law, cannot divulge that kind of information.

So I'm curious as to whether or not Korea follows this agreement to the T or even has this agreement to begin with.

I mean, if it WERE exactly the same thing in Korea as it were in the US, then it would be normal to experience a LITTLE resistance from the doctor before he guiltily divulges his or her patient's information/prognosis.

Are we being a little assumptive, here, is what my curiosity wants to know.

Cuz lord knows, doctor-patient oath or no oath, I know from personal experience that Korean journalists break all sorts of rules of journalistic integrity that are naturally assumed to be law here in the US, even when they are coming from big news outlets like SBS and KBS.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.... in conclusion.

On breaking doctor-patient confidentiality:

1) It could be a total kdrama thing where we're like, "But he just -- pfffft. Whatever. It's dramaland."

2) There are cultural exceptions in the case of doctor/patient confidentiality or there just isn't doctor-
patient confidentiality at all to begin with.

3) It could be a case of Koreans being Koreans, meaning laws are really just guidelines that can be transgressed and disregarded --BUTONLYIFIT'SREALLYIMPORTANT.

I feel like I've encountered a kdrama character before citing patient-doctor confidentiality for not divulging some information, so I do think there is something there regarding this issue. However, maybe it's not a law, but a very loose guideline, like you said.

Funny, I was writing my comment when my player played NIna Simone's "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" ... I guess that's what Maru hopes to Eun Gi now.
Finally, the revelation and I believe Maru has his hands in it. Despite what he wants to stay a little bit longer in the happiness, he knows it's the time to give a little nudge to Eun Gi's memory to bring it back herself, then she makes her decision and continues her life knowingly.
My guess is Eun will pretend for a short time, just to find out the situation why everyone lies to her, then BAM! face Maru with the truth. Since Eun Gi's character is a very straightforward girl, not sneaky, even when she wants a revenge, she'll punish Maru harshly but in an open way, just like she told Maru back then (if she found out Maru is a bad guy).
One thing I just hope that Eun Gi still remember how Maru is the one who encourage her to remember and to punish him if she thinks he deserve that, the one who hold her from impulsive marriage. Thus, she knows Maru has no hidden agenda anymore.
BUT one thing still bothers me is the car accident. It was sooo coincidental. How did Eun Gi know she ran into Maru and vice versa? Did they send text to each other, asking for the position? Was she tracking him with GPS or something alike? It was night, in a tunnel, no other cars, and their position was far enough to see each other to decide changing lane or not changing lane.
Will this question be answered or just taken for granted, 'cause y' know if it didn't happen, we won't have drama right now, right?

I am still holding out hope for some-what of a happy ending. Although I kinda of know it can't happen. Someone has to pay for all the deception...I feel so sad for Maru only because he has spent this whole time knowing that the other shoe was going to drop. I get why Eun-Gi is angry I just want her to be mad at the entire story and not just her remembered version. The break-up at the beach just before murder-suicide crash was Maru's way of setting her free. He was regretting what he had done, and was letting go of both Jae-Hee and Eun-Gi (although things didn't go as planned). In a fair world the only people who should have to pay with their lives should be Jae-hee's, (for starting this whole mess), her brother (just on principle alone) and Mn-Young (just cause I don't like him). But alas drama-land is far from a perfect world.

I still don't think Eun-ki has her memory back. Yes, she has parts of her memories back, but there's still plenty of blanks.

She remembers the crash, the talk on the beach pre-crash, random childhood memories with her dad, and random conversations with our baddies, but she doesn't remember the times in between. If she did, I don't think she would be so broken up about her father's death and would be less hurt (but still hurt) over Maru's deception.

I think there's more memories to come, and we're not out of the amnesia forest just yet.

Thnkx HeadsNo2 for the recap! Love your comments, they make sense. Fell out when I read the whole 'murder-suicide'. He...its kinda like saying 'I trying to kill you by shooting through myself.' Don't make sense but hey makes for some good drama!
I love the whole destructive relationship between Min-young and Jae-hee, since it's like she built a gun who's going to shoot her in the foot. She either made the evil or gave it a purpose however either way it's blowing up in her face big time.
Hope for a happy ending...wish for the characters survivial....except an all out doom's day. *sigh* Still like the drama! :)

Maru knews Eun Gi's will take revenge on him but he do not mind coz he loved her.His life already destroyed by helping Jae Hee's and he has got nothing to loose.Being a nice guy he would do anything to make Choco happy and Eun Gi get back her Tae San Group. That is call TRUE LOVE even he knews he's going kaput again LOVE CONQUERS ALL!As for Eun Gi she has got to be rational but looking back at her original character which is nasty she's loosing many things love and great nice guy like Maru .....Sad ending i think huhu

Thanks for the recap, HeadsNo2!

I'm so, so glad Eun-gi is back. And so, so worried for Maru. Not that he'll be totally backstabbed or sideswiped by her regaining her memory -- even if he wasn't the one nudging it, Maru's no idiot and he's been looking for this to happen -- but that he'll hold himself open to any attack she makes thinking he deserves it.

However! We've got four more eps and maybe that enough time for Eun-gi to make her initial strike, Maru to take it, Eun-gi to be impressed or moved by his taking it AND THEN RUSHING HIM TO A HOSPITAL! Happy endings for all.

...right?

Thanks for the recap, Heads.
I agree with you on JH:
"What’s most curious about their interactions is whether Jae-hee might be moved to make some right choices…"

EG's words of choosing Maru over Taesan started nibbling at the cold dark case covering her heart. We have to imagine she wasn't born this scarred, that there is a chance for her to heal emotionally. I don't like her any more than I did, but I can foresee redemption where before I was like, "Kill the b8tch!" Not only would I like EG to finally embrace ES, I would like a reconcilliation between Jae-sik and Jae-hee.

I took a coupla days to recover emotionally from this episode. Seeing MR about to get slammed by EG when he actually IS trying to help is not fun.

The problem is I completely see JH's point of view on this.
Based on the way MR is treating her - like talking to the 5 year old that she had been - compared to the way she remembers him, he is condescending and very suspicious.
Why is he being soooo nice? What does he really want? Sure, he has been by my side these last few months, but all of my red flags are going up at the same time.
Not only is this the guy who drove straight into my car, he also lied about it.
And that shoulder grip? If I were her I would have ripped that hand off so fast and told him exactly where to shove all that sweetness. The fury I imagine she feels needs to die down before she can get to rational, forward thinking.

She needs to be away from him for a week to sort through all the versions of her memories and discern what is truth and what was fed to her as truth. As I have often said, she is a smart girl, I know she will make the right conclusions with time.

SJK is very pretty when he is sad. He made me cry at the wall with Moon Jae Shin in SKKS, and I haven't been able to get him out of my drama heart since.
JoAnne says, "Noooona wants."
I say, whatever SJK wants I will give it to him!!

I believe he really did have feeling for ES. I also believed he lied to her to try and save her from him.

After everything MR has been through, DON'T YOU THINK HE NEEDS LOVE TOO.

He is happy right now bc she came back to him .

I never thought Maru purposely sped into EunGi's car, that he tried to kill her or commit suicide (??). I just thought the accident was all EunGi trying to get revenge on him. Afterall, he didn't know she was going to switch lanes at the last minute.
Hmm - all confusing about motivations.

Frankly speaking, I start to have doubts about it. At the beginning, I thought that Eungi wanted to die, so she just ran into the first car she saw and that Maru was kind of desperate too and that he didn't mind to die either. Well, they were both really hurt and tired. I thought that they were smiling at each other because they recognized themselves at the very end. But now, I am not so sure about it. Was it revenge? What kind of revenge was that since she didn't go till the very end?

I am not sure about this, and the writers could make the story anyway they want and will, but as others have said here: Eun Gee didn't seem to have gotten all her memory back. She still talks like a half Eun Gee (to be mean.. half simpleton).

And, honestly, I think she seems to remember only a part of what transpired at the beach. People can interpret the beach scene differently, but I thought Maru told her some bs to get rid of her -- for HER OWN GOOD when he said he only got only close to Eun Gee to get close to JH. But, Eun Gee did not buy this and she called him weak. Maru did not fall in love so easily for an Eun Gee who is almost a child out of sympathy or wanting to protect someone. He fell in love with Eun Gee because he actually had some real feelings for her before they decided to go for suicide together in a car crash.

Eun Gee now only remembers only the part of the conversation and not the whole thing. That makes her revenge taken out on Maru who doesn't completely deserve it -- not completely anyway.

I may have read too much and was wrong in what transpired at the beach scene. And, yes, it's hard to know what Maru is really thinking.

Desperate for a Happy-Ever-After Ending , I searched Lee Kyung Hee's list of dramas & recognised 'Sang Doo ,Lets go to school' starring Rain & Gong Hyo Jin. If memory serves me right , the ending WAS a Happily-Ever-After.
It was an angst a minute show but the ending had the 2 protagonists leaving their unhappy city life behind to go stay in the serene beautiful countryside together. Both alive. Both with full body & mental functions. Married & HAPPY.
I'm SOOOO Glad. Now , I dare to hope !
I know it might still end badly but its not a compulsory Black Hole of Gloom & Doom.
I'm gonna be greedy for Maru's sake. I'm gonna wish for..
Definitely NO NO Death for anyone...er...Ok, if someone needs to be sacrificed to feed LKH's death fetish(if she has one) , then let it be one of the baddies. Also ,No paralysis for both .No coma for both.Marriage for M & EG , even for Jae Gil to end up in a love relsp with Chiki Chaka Choco.
( Jae Sik called her that , so cute. If he doesnt try to kill off Maru or EG , I just might like him,,seeing that his interactions wt JG & Choco are quite comedic)
Is my wish list too much?* embarassed *

Jae Gil , wuri sweet giraffe !
Im such a Kdrama addict that now it takes quite abit to reach in to activate the tear ducts but I must say , Jae Gil sure did a great job! His collapsed teary puddle in Maru's room & his bawling at the diner was very touching*sniffles*
I'm slightly curious why writer-nim made Jae Gil to be a disillusioned runaway chaebol unless its to use this connection for good later on ...? If not ,then JG could just have any inconsequential background , right?

I've a question. Re :Jae Gil's sad & loud display of despair in the diner.
Ive seen many many Kdramas where the actors portray people shouting, quarrelling & crying loudly in restaurants & in make shift F&B tentage ,is this a socially tolerated behaviour? ( Cos I see much less of this in other dramas from other countries ).This is a question borne out of plain curiosity. Apologies in advance to any offence taken.

i actually think that JaeGil's background is a nice foil to EG's

it's especially apparent right at the time skip in ep 9, when JG was at his dad's funeral... he was like nooooo way am i going back to that family and their cut-throat business ways... i'm done with that-- my bro and sis-in-law can wreck havoc all they want. even though he was sad that his dad's dead, the freedom he had, and the lack of burdens riding on his shoulders is really evident. and we see where he ends up: much much happier with his "family" of Maru and Choco, sharing their joys and pains without distrust or calculations

I really hope that EG can come out of it all and find this happiness too

Okay, so now what is EK's mission? plan? What does she want?

Pre-amnesia, her enemy was or still is Jaehee. Now it's JaeHee, Maru, and Min Young? I'm pretty sure, even just for a bit, she's seen a better side of Maru. The one where he doesn't pretend he's being nice. Can't she overlook that? I wanted the old Eunki so bad to come back, but not like this. Not like this.

I foresee a pretty effin' bleak and dark 4 final episodes ahead. Let's brace ourselves for the sh*z storm that is about to come.

I really do thing it's Ma Ru who put that document to EK's table. However, he seems doesn't aware how far it would affect EK to remember his memory about the accident.
I hope it's not Ma Ru. I Hope he isn't...

he did seem really troubled by lawyer JH's fib about it being a lady driver but he also seems too protective of her to do it.
I'm considering the possibility that it cd be weepy witch JH. She was extremely upset after witnessing the kiss & after Eungi quite coolly told her she'd trade Taesan for Maru "just because". She reiterated to EG that EG needs to know the 'real' reason Maru came into her life. She seems keen to upset the seemingly unshakeable love-tie between the 2 lovebirds. So , I'm wondering if she wants the big reveal to derail Eungi & make her re-evaluate Maru's intentions.

Maybe... But I just feel she doesn't know the whole truth, the whole incident.... not enough proof to accusing her to put that document. She keep calling MR a jerk in front of EK. If SHe really knows the whole truth, and truly loves MR, SHe will hate EK for what she has done and would be in MR's side and her point of view would be different.

I find this drama really stressing and yet I like to watch it. Eun-Gi just hasn't found out that Maru has hematoma. When she does, I have a feeling that most of or all of the hate that she has for him might just disappear considering I'm pretty sure Maru won't go to surgery just to torture himself for putting Eun-Gi in so much pain. I hope it won't end said because these two sad people should be able to find happiness with themselves. If they die just like that, then I think it was a waste to watch them grow in this series from all the sadness that happened around them. Well, the writer could still do that, but I just have a slight odd feeling that the writer will tug at their heartstrings to the point that they can't handle any more just to pull them back and give them something happy. I hope I'm right cause I hate sad shows.

Probably it could end Maru dying after unsuccessful surgery. The script maybe based on him leaving 2 women i.e. 1st & last love. Sometimes Korean drama can be cruel that nobody gets the man they both loved so that there is no jealousies since both women are somewhat related. Maru may not take nor can accept JH, who was his 1st lover) as his step mother-in-law.
However, hope to see happy ending with 9 kids running only if the script director is kind enough to make the audience happy!!

This is like the best espisode and the saddest episode at the same time to me. Bascially because they are both really fallen deep in love with each other, but then she got her memory back and remembers that it was that love that caused her not to be by her father's side when he passed away. It was that love that caused her to crash into him. It was a bittersweet love/episode :(

You had me at:
"Jae-gil comes home looking like death, because he met up with Maru’s neurosurgeon sunbae and found out everything about his hematoma. Medical ethics don’t exist in this universe." LOL
Anybody else find these recaps entertaining?
