Joo-won headlines cops ‘n’ robbers rom-com

So, totally didn’t intend for it to be the Week of Joo-won Headlines, but I guess Fate’s got other ideas. After three hit dramas (Baker King Kim Tak-gu, Ojakkyo Brothers, Gaksital) and one that defies all earth logic (here’s lookin’ at you, Level 7 Civil Servant), Joo-won is going back to filmlandia to take his first headlining role in a movie.

It’s a romantic comedy called Only You, which is so vague you may as well call it A Romance Film. Though really, I suppose you’d get more people in the theater if you just went ahead and called it Movie Starring Joo-won-ie. The movie will be an unusual love story between a house burglar and a cop. It’s described as a light comedy, and will be directed by newcomer Lee Hyun-jong.

Joo-won will be playing the cop, which is kind of a bummer, given that he’s played that character about ten thousand times already. I’d rather have him be the cat burglar. Meow. The production is still in the casting process for the thievin’ heroine. I can only say this with so much emphasis because there’s no such thing as double-italics: She’d better be a good match for him. That is all.

Only You hopes to finish casting and start shooting as soon as Level 7 ends. No rest for the pretty.

No. You are not the only one! I would understand him taking on yet another role if it had been a different one from what he has been doing recently ......something that would allow him to show a different side of him as an actor.

It'd be brilliant if Han Hyo Joo was cast as the female lead. She has this really special onscreen presence that I can't exactly define, but goodness. :D The first show of hers that I watched was Iljimae years ago, and her character honestly wasn't all that interesting to me, but yet I still looked forward to her every scene. It's a testament to how she's able to command attention whenever she acts. HYJ + JW = :D :D :D

On another note:
"Though really, I suppose you’d get more people in the theater if you just went ahead and called it Movie Starring Joo-won-ie."

I immediately had this mental image of a movie poster with that title and that title only (no character faces, no tagline, no nice flashy background, no nothing whatsoever), and a crazy number of the female population queuing at ticket booths simply because of that poster. Puppy power HAHAHA I'd be in that queue any day ^^

He seems to pick more lighter roles these days. Way to go boy, you're soooo good playing darker roles and it's time for you to play different kind of roles. I love his acting.. Ma Jun, Tae Hee, Kang To/Sato Hiroshi and Gil Ro are all memorable roles, and not forgetting Joo Won in 1N2D.

A policeman again, what to do... He's awesome as a police officer. It's not an easy role, I dont see many young actors in their 20s or even the post army actors that can play it well. It's either they dont get the chance to do it or they're not capable of doing it. Even the actors in their 30s or more matured one being typecast as a police officer and a gangster. Two most favourite roles in Korean film. Heee.

Maybe in the future, after his post army, he can play more matured roles.

if there was a LIKE button for your comments Zee, i would definitely press the button :-)

i like all your points. Gaksital, i am going to assume, was a physically and emotionally draining project lol. but JW is now reaping the benefits of all his hard work. so it would make sense that nowadays..he's just taking it easy.

i concur that not everyone can play a police officer so effortlessly. but JW can and, he sizzles when he plays "cop"...pardon my drool.

JW reminds me of another actor that i LOVE. the level of intensity....the versatility.......the dedication....yup, i'm talking about WON BIN. booyah!

He is still a new actor and it is his first leading role in a movie. So i understand he took this chance to have more acting experiences, even if it is not the first time he plays a cop. Then again, we do not have much details about the story yet, so, maybe it is a very interesting and cute story (i hope so). I love seeing him in many projects, he is a hard working actor and i hope his acting (that i already appreciate) will improve again the next time i see him!

^so friggin' true :P

seriously, i'll be a burglar stealing JW away if the female lead is someone like Choi Kang Hee... or CKH herself -.-
together they don't look good... at all ._. it's something even joowon's pretty face couldn't save. (sorry i'm just shallow like that xP )
P/S: that's just me kay, don't kill me if you think differently.

Here is a list of who I think would look good next to him as a leading lady for said film

they are a bit of the top ten that I think would Rock but they are in no proper order

1. Sung Yuri
2. Han Ji Won (she can fight do stunts, doesn’t mind even getting dirty and still look good while she does all that whats to complain. Only thing is that people want to see her in some other roles and feel that she is sterotyped as the action chick. She can even do Rom Comedies. Some credits, Secret Garden, Sector 7, The King 2 Hearts)[Huess she is the closest to a Korean version of Lara Croft]
3. Kim So-Yeon. From the Iris and Athena cast she was the most well K**k A** female in my opinion and the best looking. Sorry other Iris fans. Plus with a Sniper Rifle and heavy ordance Chi*k what more can guys want. Also saw her recently in a comedy Prosecutor Princess and she impressed me. So she gets my vote.
4. Lee So Young. She has done both Action Roles plus acted out in comedy so we know that she can do both plus she is also an amateur boxer so the action scenes wont be so bad/hard on her. credits in her favor, Wild/Aggressive Romance, Poseidon and Who wants to be a Billionaire/Birth of the Rich. Though I prefer her with her longer hair not the one that she sported in Wild Romance but then again that is just me.
5. Han Chae-Ah. Was a great Rara and we also saw some of her fighting skills in the show called Hero (Didn’t get to complete it unfortunately) In the looks department she is not so bad, her acting is okay. But her fighting skills are good for this kind of play. (due to her current show she might be hard to get.) (Will also be a good bridal mask reunion fans of that show will like it and all the Rara and Lee Gangto shippers will like that)
6. Shin Min Ah. She is not pretty but can look real cute especially when she give those killer smiles of hers at certain points. I have had high hopes for her since I just finished watching Arrang and loved her in the few episodes that I could watch of her in My Girlfriend is A Nine Tailed Fox.
7. Park Min Young. Have my doubts about her. She can look pretty at times, do comedies well but I haven’t really seen her fight so I can’t give a proper verdict but there are people who would like to see her so I added her over here.
8. Han Ye-Seul. She did a similar role in Spy Myeongwal so she might not want to repeat such a role. Though to be quite honest while we are speaking of said role I might not trust her to such an important role after what happened on the set that time. While I may feel for her that she may have been wronged I still feel that there might have been better ways to go about what she did.
9. Lee Ji-A. Okay remember when I said Option 3 was the best of the Iris cast I still stick to that but at times Lee Ji-A reminds me a lot in the resemblance department with the main actress of the film (maybe that is just me) So for that reason I wanted to add her to this list. Hope that she can fight. Have only seen her in Athena (couldn’t finish the show unfortunately due to time and all) and in Me to Flower I think. She was good in both of them acting wise so I have no doubts that if selected she would have done a good job.
10. Uee. Finally I would like to end this list with a really big demand (atleast on the few sites that I went to) to see this ojjako reunion. her acting skills can use some work

What do any of you think of my list that I managed to compile. Are any of them that you would want to see if so why and if not why. Would you like to add someone else if so please do tell me. Lets PARTY with each other. :) looking forward to hearing your view on this matter as well. Till then take care :0

In your list, i like han chae ah very much because I love her character in gaksital, she also has great chemistry with kang-to. but she has a drama to film right now...

I also like uee in ojakkyo brothers, i think her acting is good and their couple in OB was really sweet. so yes, it could be a good choice...
and did you guys watched the win win episode with joo won?, I don't know why I did think of uee when joo won cried about this girl he regretted... aww i know, i must be crazy ^^

For me Kim so Yeon & ha ji won are the best actresses in your list, but i don't think the role suits them the best :)

For the role in this movie, i would love to see shin min ah with joo won, they would be very cute together, & because I really liked her in arang and gumiho.

Thankyou all for your responses.

To be honest I posted this list when I heard that Choi Kang Hee was going to be his leading lady in his current drama (Level 7 Civil Servant). Since I hadn't seen Choi Kang Hee in any roles before this (saw a few eps of Protect The Boss but couldn't really remember her or her acting in that) and since she was getting a lot of negative comments for her being selected in said role I decided to add a list of who may have been a good screen partner next to him in that show thus my list. So you would be able to see how I cut and pasted this list with slight modifications to it. :)

Yes I am extremely lazy. :)

I didn't add any more in the list as I hadn't really seen some of the other actress that have been mentioned.

I still think that the thief should be able to do some action scenes LOL maybe she will be like the Korean Version of Cat Woman :)
For Joo Won he can be a strict by the book cop and he would have either conflicted feelings should he arrest the girl or just capture her in the confines of his heart.
There could be a few more good ideas but since I am not the one making the film lets see what happens next :)

But picture JooWonnie with Eun Ji, doing her feisty Busan girl bit. LOVE.

Park Bo Young, too. Can she be funny? I only ever saw her in *sob* A Werewolf Boy

As much as it'd be nice for him to play other roles aside from cop/investigator/civil servant or something along those lines, I am just amazed at how I can distinctly differentiate each of the characters he has portrayed, even if they're similar roles. That is how much effort he puts into his acting and how much he internalizes his roles. Tae Hui, Gaksital, Lee Kang To, Han Gil Ro, Ho Ryong are all different characters that Joo Won has played but none of them feels a repeat don't you guys think?

Awesome acting Joo Won oppa! <3 really hope this movie will be awesome too! And a big hit! :D

definitely agree.. he's being a stereotype actor now, always potraying a police officer, or someone who is using guns. but it's so easy to differentiate all his roles. he's a great actor, works hard with sleepless nights just to continue filming. he even go to the filming site when he's not being filmed.

i hope this drama will be daebak!!! so he can regain his title as prince of ratings. ^^

I agree. Even though those police/ investigator roles may all involve stunts, kicks, and guns, the characters he portrayed were all different. Tae Hee from Ojakyo was somewhat introverted and had a hard time expressing his feelings, or knowing what they were. Lee Kang To/Gaksital was all about fighting injustice w/ determination and sacrifice. Han Gil Ro from Civil Servant likes things plain, simple, and clear. He'll ask a question bluntly and w/o hesitation, much like a child.
I think Joo Won does such a great job expressing his characters, especially w/ his eyes. That's hard for some actors. They only have 1 face and no range of emotion.

Even though many have said Choi Kang Hee (7GCS) wasn't a good match for him (age, not pretty enough, and other superficial things, etc.), I totally believe he really loves her in the drama. He's that convincing in his acting. I'm enjoying 7GCS not b/c the story is perfection, but b/c of Joo-Won's acting.

My vote is on Park Shin Hye too..

she'll do an outstanding job...

i wouldn't mind seeing a role reversal where Shin Hye is the cop and he's the delinquent thief...ke ke ke..

though PSH is very busy these days, she's a very good actress and loves sports, and as a lady cop, she can run really fast...as we've seen in Running Man..

uhmm...i was browsing allkpop for Shin Min Ah topics and came upon this article dated Feb. 8, 2012:

It’s been revealed that actress Shin Min Ah will be making her much-anticipated comeback through the upcoming movie, ‘Only You‘.

Shin Min Ah recently confirmed her participation in the movie and is currently going over details. ‘Only You’ will be Shin Min Ah’s first project in nearly two years; her last drama, ‘My Girlfriend is a Gumiho‘, was made in 2010 and her last movie, ‘Million‘, was released back in 2009.

‘Only You’ will revolve around the heart-wrenching love story between a thief and a police officer — surprisingly, Shin Min Ah will be playing the role of the burglar, who’s said to be a lovable, yet assertive character.

Shin Min Ah’s partner for the movie will be actor Shin Ha Kyun from the recently concluded television drama, ‘Brain‘. ‘Only You’ plans on finalizing its cast soon, and filming will begin as early as March should things go according to plan.

WTH? is this project one and the same, with the obvious lead actor change. OMG.
