The action begins on Gu Family Book

Wonder twins, activate! Yay, here’s our first glimpse of action on the new fantasy fusion sageuk Gu Family Book, starring Lee Seung-gi as a half-gumiho, half-puppy, and Suzy as the bow-and-arrow-wielding heroine that he’ll fall in love with. Right now they look more like partners in crime, which hey, would be a nice change of pace. I don’t expect the drama not to have any damsels in distress, but it already gets points for making our heroine a fighter. I’m so excited for something actiony right now — the more high-flying fun the better. Please be badass. Please be badass.

Seung-gi seems to be having a lot of fun knockin’ some heads together and showing off his gumiho strength. I hope they really go to town with the supernatural element and give him some powers too. It’s no fun when they skimp on the super for a superhero. The rest of the stills are from the teaser, with only tiny glimpses of our two leads. It’s mostly just an intro to our half-gumiho hero Choi Kang-chi — from human mother Lee Yeon-hee and gumiho father Choi Jin-hyuk.

The title Gu Family Book is a reference to a gumiho legend (in this storyverse) about a centuries-old book that’s rumored to contain the secret to becoming human. No one’s seen the book, and there’s no telling whether it exists or is just a gumiho bedtime story passed down through the generations. Kang-chi wants more than anything to become human, and so the story will be his journey to chase down this legend.

Suzy plays Dam Yeo-wool, daughter of a martial arts teacher (played by Jo Sung-ha), who learned to fight and is particularly skilled with a bow and arrow. Yoo Yeon-seok (pictured below) will be Kang-chi’s rival — he’s the son of the man who takes Kang-chi in as an orphan (which also makes him Lee Yubi’s oppa), and he’ll be the cold cynical scholar who challenges Kang-chi for the heroine’s affections.

So far it seems like the world will have a strong mythology and lots of action, so I’ve got my fingers crossed that it delivers. Gu Family Book premieres April 8 on MBC.

Half gumiho, half puppy.....needed that. Can't wait for this to air. Been watching recycled dramas while waiting for the next batch of Spyless Are Hardly Civil To Each Other illustrations.

Suzy looks like she doesn't have the strength to hold a real sword, but I hope drama magic can make her look convincing enough.

She's pretty strong though. Search Suzy's Board Breaking on youtube. But I agree she doesn't seem to know what to do with a sword. Hopefully she's more convincing with her bow. I do think that's pretty much all she filmed at the time so they had to use that scene.

Dear Suzy: the key to acting is your facial muscles have to move, or failing that, the rest of your body has to move convincingly to make up for it. You've got a couple of weeks to shape up, so get to work on it.

Also, for future reference, please stop dressing like a ten year-old when you're playing an American woman.

Suzy was meant to play someone that was one tone in her previous drama, Dream High... she's aware of the criticisms according to Strong Heart too. (On Dream High she was instructed to be more wooden and got heat for it) I thought she did a really good job on Big, though many people didn't like the drama because they wanted a crack drama and didn't get it. I liked her concept of the character and I thought she conveyed it well. Though subtle facial expressions comes with practice and time. (Gong Yoo is really good at that.)

And no, I'm not a fangirly type either. =P If you see my previous comments you'll see me go over technical problems. Such as below with LSG's being a bubble head in real life.

Producers who should know better tend to make that mistake in casting idols and non-actors: assigning them a role of a character with little emotion. That's not how acting works. The less emotion the character has, the harder the actor has to work to make the character spring to life on a two-dimensional screen. If the actor does nothing, the character vanishes into the background or, worse, looks like a mannequin instead of a human.

i was okay with everything you said until this:

"for future reference, please stop dressing like a ten year-old when you’re playing an American woman."

are you just ignorant over drama matters? because characters concepts and clothes are not decided by the actors.

To clarify, that was the sarcasm bird flying by. In any event, costume designers never appear in public. Suzy was the only one there to blame.

I keep seeing LSG as the bubble head in Running Man. Affable and a really good actor, but somewhat lacking in nunchi.

Since he's dorky and klutzy in RL (said with much love since I like dorks.), I also don't by DEFAULT seeing him as an action hero. (I see him more as a bumbling type or Kwangsoo's twin in personality.) However, I'll give him a chance to win me over. ^^;;

I saw him in the sageuk wig and thought he had that out of place feel that I felt toward Yamapi being in historicals. (And keep in mind I like Yamapi too) I get I'm in the minority, but since he's a tong saeng I don't see him with fan girly eyes. (Gong Yoo and Lee Min Ki, oppa deul maybe...) Still cheering for him.

I'm just glad this is replacing Boar Horse Doctor. Seeing the trailer at the end of Horse Doctor was the highlight of the episodes it aired in.

This looks like a major blast, but can't the plot ever be "reconciling the human and non-human halves" rather than "I must be human"? Why do you want to give up superpowers completely, every superhero ever?
