1 Night 2 Days: Episode 432

EPISODE 432. Broadcast on March 31, 2013.

girlfriday: So we catch up to the sleepytime bokbulbok race on Jeju Island, where the odd-numbered flag-pullers get to sleep indoors.

javabeans: OH RIGHT. The awesomely random flag-pulling race where you have to guess which place you are in the race and mess with your teammates’ minds by deliberately not pulling the flag. So we end up with team members literally just crouched in various spots around the perimeter — Jong-min, Joo-won, Su-geun — trying to “hide” and bide their time. Currently Seung-woo is in first place (yay!) and Tae-hyun the Unlucky in second.

girlfriday: Once Tae-woong arrives, he calls Joo-won out of hiding, and then it suddenly makes Su-geun really nervous. So then he runs out from behind the camera line to guard the flag. But then he counts all the people he sees (including Jong-min, whose idea of hiding is you-can’t-see-me-if-I-can’t-see-you) and decides this would be an even-numbered flag-pull.

javabeans: It’s a popular tactic, since that’s all Joo-won’s doing too. Isn’t it hilarious that Tae-woong literally moseyed all day and took a freaking nap, and he comes in time to challenge for third place?

girlfriday: I love that everyone else is playing all these mind games, but Joo-won’s just like, Eh, I’ll pull the flag, whatever.

javabeans: It’s so like him. Like, I’m tired of thinking. Too much strategy. Head hurts.

girlfriday: He gets on the bus and finds that he was lucky. So then Su-geun, thinking he’s safe now, pulls the flag and follows Joo-won onto the bus…

javabeans: But he started off on the wrong assumption anyway, so he’s off by one count.

girlfriday: Hahaha, so Su-geun screams while the bus door is still open, which is genuine horror at losing, but then uses it and yells at Jong-min to pull the flag next. It’s actually good advice, but who would believe Su-geun?

javabeans: Manboy who cried wolf in every instance possible? Untrustworthy? Neverrrr. The thing is, he shouts so loudly that Bird is trying to shush him, but at least with his rep that’s not really a giveaway.

girlfriday: In fact it makes Jong-min sure NOT to pull the flag, and so he backs away and lets Tae-woong have the next turn. It cracks me up that the guys who did all the strategizing and double-thinking loop-de-loops in their heads all end up sleeping outside.

javabeans: The bus fakeouts don’t seem to get old — the guys love hiding and fooling the new guy every time, making winners think they lost and vice versa. Heh.

girlfriday: I know, it’s hilariously juvenile. Not really funny to us, but they get such a kick out of it that it’s cute.

javabeans: This means that Jong-min and Shi-kyung (who’s still out taking his sweet time, determined to be last) will be 6th and 7th — the question is whether Jong-min will psych himself out so much that he’ll pull the flag prematurely, or whether he’ll wait till Shi-kyung arrives and then there’s just going to be the longest sit-off ever.

girlfriday: I seriously doubt that Jong-min has that kind of patience. If this were Eun Ji-won, he might spend the night by that flag, but Jong-min? I guess the question is more how much later did Shi-kyung arrive.

javabeans: So Jong-min tucks himself out of sight to wait it out, and ah, it’s only ten minutes later that Shi-kyung pulls up, having missed the whole rigamarole at the flagpole, so he just assumes he’s last and pulls it right away with no suspicions. My only question is whether the show is faking us out by jumping ahead to him. ‘Cause yeah, I can see Jong-min hiding for like two minutes, then talking himself out of it.

girlfriday: The boys trickle out of the bus, and the three outdoor sleepers are Tae-hyun, Su-geun, and Jong-min. The caption reads: “He couldn’t wait and pulled the flag after five seconds.” HA.

javabeans: HAHAHA. I guess we know this show pretty well.

girlfriday: After a leisurely walk to basecamp they get some downtime and then head out for dinner games.

javabeans: Dinner had better be good, given that they had to beg with spoon necklaces all day. They do seem a little extra-impatient running through the dinner intro tonight. Bird announces that it’s a three-against-three setup (with one referee) and they’ll be playing for a full course dinner themed around a Jeju specialty fish. The losers… get plain rice and ONE piece of seasoned radish from the fish stew.

girlfriday: How sad is it that Seung-woo’s like, “That’s not that bad!” about the radish. The game to determine the referee is Decipher the Dialect — they get a local couple to say things to each other, and they have to guess what they’re saying.

javabeans: Note that Jeju dialect is notoriously hard to understand, even for Koreans. It’s not just an accent, but almost its own language really. The couple start with the first scripted bit, and Shi-kyung starts blinking. Remember his tic? Blink-blink-blink-blink.

girlfriday: Does that mean the wheels are turning in his head?

javabeans: I always imagine the internal robotic dialogue: Information overload. Data… processing… Comprehension incomplete.

girlfriday: In this case, I don’t blame him. I have no idea what these people are saying. You basically just have to guess based on context clues and intonation. Su-geun’s the first to get two right, so he gets to be the MC.

javabeans: He splits the teams into Hats (Tae-woong, Joo-won, Jong-min) and No Hats (Tae-hyun, Seung-woo, Shi-kyung) and introduces the first game: Invisible Chair. One team will sit down behind a board so you can’t see what they’re sitting on, and one guy will squat in the air, and the opposing team has to guess which guy doesn’t have a chair.

girlfriday: Ouch for the chairless one. No Hats sit first, and we don’t get to see who’s sitting on air, as the other team guesses. Tae-woong asks them to raise their hands, and Shi-kyung’s the only one who complies readily. Uh-oh, is that a giveaway that he’s on a chair?

javabeans: He gives this abashed look, like he realizes belatedly it was a tell. HA, the boys spot Tae-hyun shaking a little and pick him, and the sitting team grimaces. But then the board falls and he’s sitting in a chair — total fakeout! It was Shi-kyung after all, otherwise known as Thighs of Steel.

girlfriday: Dude, was Shi-kyung acting? He was avoiding eye contact and looking totally guilty when the other team called him out for having a chair. Nice one.

javabeans: Then it’s the other team’s turn, and how absurd is it that Jong-min immediately has this big exaggerated pain face on?

girlfriday: But if they were smart they would’ve had him be chairless and overact.

javabeans: That’s true, he likes the mind games. This team is all overacting, so it clouds the issue for sure.

girlfriday: They decide it’s Joo-won, and the barrier goes down… LOL, it’s Joo-won all right, with his legs crossed ever-so-demurely.

javabeans: HAHAHA. He’s doing the pee-pee sit. So the No Hats win this round, 2-0. The next game is described as finding your opponent’s weaknesses in a verbal attack. Su-geun’s all, “You mean this is like Dangyunhaji?” HA. Dangyunhaji (the “Of Course Game”) was the marquee game from X-Man back in the day (which Jong-min should be very familiar with), which was all the rage at the time. Man I loved that game.

girlfriday: That game was awesome.

javabeans: It was basically a way for celebrities to insult each other onscreen with a smile and an excuse. No banmal, no hierarchies, just your wits and best zingers.

girlfriday: Because in order to win you have to keep agreeing with the person who’s insulting you to your face.

javabeans: It was the perfect mindfuck opposite-land game. You had to agree to the insults to win, or if your pride asserted itself (or your wits ran out) and you refused to acknowledge the insult you lost the game. So you could have some total rookie asking his hyung or sunbae things like, “Hyung, do you know your songs are terrible?” or whatnot.

girlfriday: Pffffft. Bird shakes his hand, all, No, this is totally not that game! It’s very different! Even though, the only difference seems to be that you don’t have to say “Dangyunhaji” after the insult.

javabeans: In this game, you lose if you don’t respond quickly enough, or if the weakness you pick is not really a weakness. First up: Tae-woong versus Seung-woo. Haha, these are cracking me up. Tae-woong: “Hyung you’re so hyper.” Seung-woo: “You’re a slob.” Tae-woong: “Sometimes you seem like a sick patient.”

girlfriday: I think Tae-woong already wins it there, but Seung-woo stalls for some more time to recover.

javabeans: The insults get more and more childish. It’s hilarious. You can totally tell they’re scrambling to dish ‘em out so that they barely have time to take ‘em in, but there’s that 10 percent belated response of “Wait I just got told.”

girlfriday: Haha, Tae-woong: “You’re a wrinkled old fogey!” Okay, he’s gonna win, right? Yeah Seung-woo has no comeback for that, so Tae-woong wins Round 1. Next up is Joo-won vs. Shi-kyung.

javabeans: I fully expect Joo-won to win, just because I fully expect him to be totally up and up on the latest schoolyard taunts. Whereas I expect Shi-kyung to try too hard to find good zingers that he’ll run out of time.

girlfriday: Hee. He starts out pretty strong. Joo-won: “You eat so much lately that you shouldn’t sing ballads anymore.” Hahaha.

javabeans: Then Shi-kyung counters with how Joo-won lacks common knowledge, and Joo-won readily acknowledges it, and he totally says “Dangyunhaji” out of habit and even does the hand gesture they used to do. Pwahaha.

girlfriday: LOL. Bird’s sweatin’ plagiarism bullets.

javabeans: Plus that was an SBS Sunday show!

girlfriday: Made by the people who are now doing Running Man. So yeah, not a good idea. But so funny.

javabeans: Joo-won loses because he doesn’t answer fast enough (drat that “Dangyunhaji” reflex), so now it’s Jong-min versus Tae-hyun. Is this even fair?

girlfriday: Jong-min’s whole variety character IS this game.

javabeans: They start out light, easing into it with “Your flippant laughing makes me feel bad” and “You stutter too much.” Then it’s time for the real game to start and Tae-hyun unleashes, “YOU UGLY!”

girlfriday: So then Jong-min gets down to business: “You act like you regret being married!” It’s not so much an insult, but then he adds a pelvic thrust, which is enough to get Tae-hyun mad and he chooses fisticuffs instead of playing his turn.

javabeans: The others all laugh, but don’t you think it turns it into a weird and forced moment? And Tae-hyun is half-laughing and half-telling the camera sorta-seriously, “I don’t regret being married!” Sigh, Jong-min. I mean, you’re sweet and all, but no sense of what’s appropriate or which battles to pick. You are your own worst enemy sometimes.

girlfriday: Ain’t that the truth. The last game is a treasure hunt, with ten little red boxes. One team takes turns hiding the boxes in a relay (they can’t see where their own teammates hide them) and then the other team will get a chance to be the seekers, also in relay. Each person gets one minute, for hiding and seeking.

javabeans: So far I think No Hats are pretty crafty hiders, but I think the more you try to hide it, the more obvious it kind of seems.

girlfriday: It’s pretty funny that the tall guys do the exact same thing. Shi-kyung hides a box on the roof, and the first thing that Joo-won does is peer over the roof. In total the Hats only find five of the boxes.

javabeans: Then the hiders and seekers swap places. HA, of course Tae-woong beelines for the doghouse.

girlfriday: Did he seriously just stick the whole handful of them in there? This team has terrible hiders. Jong-min puts his in plain sight.

javabeans: The question is whether the seekers will overthink it, ha. They do the unveiling and only have three boxes, and Su-geun is about to declare the winners — and then Tae-hyun shouts, “WAIT!” Did he pull a major fakeout?

girlfriday: Omo, he really has more boxes. “From the doghouse that Uhm Tae-woong likes so much…” He pulls out one, and then another.

javabeans: They’re tied in games, and tied in the last game, which means they’re soon clamoring for dinner for all.  But no, there’s a last game after all to tiebreak: Elephant nose of dizziness, and then try to pick up as many of the little red boxes. Ha, that’s so cute.

girlfriday: Dude, they should’ve just played this game from the start. Screw the relay hiding and seeking. After they spin, Su-geun chucks all the boxes into the air, and Tae-hyun and Jong-min scramble all over each other.

javabeans: Aw, so the Hats win dinner (Tae-woong, Jong-min, Joo-won). I really wanted Tae-hyun to win, maybe because of his incredibly bad streak of luck otherwise.

girlfriday: Poor guy. No dinner and eight weeks straight of sleeping outdoors.

javabeans: While the winners feast, the losers actually eat their rice and radish happily, saying that they’ve had worse and this is really not so bad. And just then, Seung-woo’s dish flips over and sends rice all over his leg! HA, and aw.

girlfriday: Oh noes, did he lose his ONE radish?

javabeans: Su-geun offers one more. The quid pro quo: “Do a sexy dance.” Jong-min adds half a fish filet to the dish, and Seung-woo swallows his pride.

girlfriday: I love that he gets up and is all, “Guys, WATCH!” He’ll dance, but not without a rapt audience. OMG, so then because the winners say that Seung-woo’s not allowed to share his sexy dance winnings, Tae-hyun and Shi-kyung each get up to do a dance, and I’m dying. Shi-kyung, stop that!

javabeans: Tae-hyun’s is your standard pelvic thrust (and he’s got a little rhythm) but Shi-kyung’s is full-on klutzy mermaid stripper and it’s hilarious. I love the cut where they’re all happy and smiling, sighing, “I’m happy.” Caption adds: “One minute later…” and they’re all looking grumpy and hungry because their plates are now empty.

girlfriday: After dinner they gather inside, and aw man, is it time to announce Seung-woo’s departure from the show? I hate these. I always cry.

javabeans: They’re like, “C’mon Bird, it’s my last night, couldn’t we have all eaten dinner together?” Bird: “But you did eat together.” Su-geun: “I bet he got hit a lot as a child.”

girlfriday: Seung-woo suggests it would be nice if they all got to sleep together tonight, and Bird agrees that they can totally do that… outside. Muahaha. No amount of arguing works, so the indoors sleepers agree to all sleep in the tent tonight.

javabeans: Bird presents Seung-woo with a gift of a jersey printed with a number that has the others wondering, which Seung-woo immediately recognizes as his family’s birthdays (the months). It’s been signed by the crew, and now the cast signs messages too.

girlfriday: Aw, he’s so touched and teary-eyed but he doesn’t want to cry so he keeps looking elsewhere and fidgeting.

javabeans: He can’t read the messages aloud without crying so the guys read their notes themselves. Which is probably the only way to keep the waterworks from bursting since they’re reading in a purposely light voice, trying not to cry too.

girlfriday: Awwww, but then Jong-min gets so choked up that he can’t read his. And then of course maknae Joo-won cries the whole way through his. Soon everyone’s crying and Seung-woo blames Bird for making them cry, and changes the subject to the morning mission to try and lighten the mood.

javabeans: They pile into the tent and drop off to sleep, but Seung-woo tosses and turns a bit before getting up to get some air. A VJ is still up so he paces a bit and chats with him, marveling at how quickly the year has passed and basically just taking in his last night here.

girlfriday: It’s a nice quiet moment that you don’t normally get on this show. And now I’m remembering that he couldn’t sleep on his first night either. He muses that it’s hard to find this kind of affection while doing a show, and then quips that by morning they’ll be fighting each other for breakfast and be back to finding each other annoying.

javabeans: In the morning, a song wakes them all up and Shi-kyung must be feeling playful because he just does a silly dance in front of the tent — and hilariously, the others who join him half-asleep are like, Huh? Is this a thing? Imma do it too!

girlfriday: It’s pretty awesome.

javabeans: But no, it’s not a thing, and they’re loaded into the bus right away to head to the beach. It’s pretty… until you see the wetsuits spread out and the tub of eels. Nothing comes easy on this show, does it?

girlfriday: I know, they’ll wring the tears out of you, but you still gotta work for your breakfast. It’s a relay they have to finish in 99 seconds: pass a bucket of eels to a member wearing flippers, shake 200 counts, solve an underwater math problem, play jaegi with flippers, and the last guy has to put on a full wetsuit.

javabeans: They’re told the breakfast table (yum — all seafood and freshness) will only be set for thirty minutes, and the guys grumble, Seriously, can’t you just let us eat? But it’s not as bad as in previous trips — it’s not that food will be taken away from the table at intervals, but that they only have thirty minutes for breakfast, including the game. If they take too long, they’ll have less time to actually eat.

girlfriday: Oh, they could probably just scarf it down in two minutes if they HAD to, right?

javabeans: Are you psychic? Shi-kyung’s caption: “Oh, then I don’t care. Two minutes is enough for me.”

girlfriday: HA. So they start the relay, and Tae-woong and Shi-kyung handle the eels pretty easily. Tae-hyun and Joo-won’s shake n’ shimmy dance time is amazing.

javabeans: It’s like leprechauns at a rave on Red Bull, being electrocuted in fast-forward.

girlfriday: Like I said, amazing. But oh man, they get tripped up on Seung-woo’s math problem so they have to start all over.

javabeans: More shaking! This should be a game forever.

girlfriday: Yes, every morning leprechaun rave for these two.

javabeans: It’s extra hilarious when they try to introduce, oh, actual dancing or order or intent to the shaking. It’s like mad shaking, then an actual dance move, then running, then mad shaking again.

girlfriday: They struggle for a few more rounds, and then Jong-min takes over for Joo-won at the rave, also to hilarious effect. This time they actually make it past the math and jaegi, and they scramble to get Joo-won into the wetsuit… with two seconds to spare. They get 17 minutes to eat breakfast.

javabeans: Dude, that is PLENTY.

girlfriday: They get ready to head back to said breakfast, when suddenly they realize that the beach they’re standing on has become an island. Dude, isn’t it someone’s job to keep an eye on the tide?

javabeans: Was this not part of the plan?

girlfriday: How cute, Tae-woong starts piggybacking crew members over and Seung-woo calls him Uhmboat.

javabeans: And Uhmshuttle. That’s adorable.

girlfriday: Omo, Shi-kyung princess-carries people over. Are you squeeing?

javabeans: HA, no I’m busting out laughing at Bird: “Shi-kyung-sshi! Me too!”

girlfriday: Lol, and then he jumps into Shi-kyung’s arms to be carried across. HOW CUTE.

javabeans: That is the best thing ever. It’s so weird and dissonant and hysterically funny.

girlfriday: It makes me sadder about it being Bird’s last day too. He and Shi-kyung have such a cute bickering bromance.

javabeans: They get their 17 minutes on the clock for breakfast, and start digging in. Gah, I’m so hungry. Also, I’m going to die laughing if they finish with like 10 minutes to spare.

girlfriday: You called it. After a while it looks like a disaster zone and they start to slow down… and the PD calls out: “Five minutes have passed.” They get to finish breakfast in a leisurely fashion and then climb into the car for a last little trip. Seung-woo takes the wheel today, and they head out to find an 800-year old tree.

javabeans: They take a long hike up a trail, passing by lots of interesting and ancient trees, and finally get to their destination so they can take a picture with it.

girlfriday: They sit down to chat and muse that the trip went by so quickly, and Seung-woo quips that they all got emotional last night, “but you sure fell asleep quickly.” Heh. He starts the closing by thanking the crew and the viewers, but then he makes eye contact with Su-geun mid-speech and suddenly they both burst into tears. Aw.

javabeans: Aw, and that was so sudden. He was holding it in so well all this time, and then it just burst. He calms down, and then it’s almost funny how everybody is literally looking in different random directions, like they don’t want to make eye contact with each other and lose it at the last minute.

girlfriday: Yeah it’s Don’t look at me! Don’t look at me! everywhere you turn. They finally get Tae-woong to do the closing, which successfully gets everyone laughing again. The boys toss Seung-woo into the air (I’ll die laughing if they drop him) and Seung-woo gets a montage of his past year on the show. That was a nice send-off. Bye Bird! Bye Seung-woo hyung!

javabeans: We’ll definitely miss you. Sniffles.

If it's for 6 months, he might tire himself out, he already looks tired every time we see him on 1N2D. He also will start shooting for his movie. Man, he should take a break.

And, omo! I was really looking forward to a new drama of his.:(

I'm so mad pissed with my cable provider as they displayed on the tv schedule that apparently this week's 1N2D was to air on Saturday night instead of the usual Friday night repeat airing.Imagine i was waiting since last Friday to see Kim Seung Woo ajusshi's last episode only to see a documentary airing in its apparent Saturday schedule.

I referred back to KBSWorld website and realized it aired as usual on Friday night.Oh my goodness!!!!So angry!!!!.

Have t oread the recap here seeing i have no time to hunt the raw and the Eng subs.

Goodbye KSW,,,it won't be the same without you. You always had this coolness as the oldest, but sometimes the silliest too. Gonna miss you in this show a lot.
LSG will be only anchor for the other guys now, but they are developing stronger bonds between each other from week to week.
A.k.a turning to shameless people...hahahahaha...
Look at Shi Kyung with his sexy dance...OMG he is hilarious!!
Where was the cool and reserved guy who made first appearance a year ago?
I don't think the bromance is scripted here. You just can't fake something like that. Especially JW and UTW.

I think Shi Kyung is compatible with CTH.
Well, everyone is compatible with CTH :) He just naturally has this thing which makes people feels comfortable around him.
That guy holds nothing back, which will be a good influence for Shi Kyung.
Fighting for all the members, will stay with you all the way... Endless hearts for Shi Kyung and Tae Hyun....

Yes, Disruptive and Bird will be missed. I was expecting something for PD Bird though from the cast - some gesture (and not the rude kind). I really hope hope Seung-woo comes back as a total surprise for his cast mates - that would be so cool.
On a different note: I am always surprised when Jongmin does something inappropriate on camera and it isn't edited out. This is the 2nd time he has done the "velvet thrust" and they air it. This is a family show! And Taehyun's son watches it - how tacky was that?
Anyhoo - I still be back for next week's show cause I am addicted...!
