So Ji-sub and Gong Hyo-jin courted for new Hong Sisters drama
by girlfriday
A new year means there’s a new Hong Sisters drama on the way, and this time they’re heading to SBS in the summer. Some of us are still scarred from Big, while others of us may choose to remember their last drama as Best Love, but never fear, because there’s a brand new drama ahead to wash all those memories away. In the first round of casting rumors for the leads, we have broodmeister So Ji-sub (Ghost) and Hong Sisters alum Gong Hyo-jin (Best Love). Is there an option to vote for one and not the other? Whadduya mean it’s not up to me?
The drama, called Master’s Sun, is about a woman who can see ghosts and the man who protects her. Huh. Like a bodyguard? Or a supernatural knight? Or just a really overprotective boyfriend? ‘Cause I gotta tell ya, the latter is not that interesting. There’s no info yet on whether it’s a modern drama or a sageuk, but of course with the Hong Sisters it’ll be a rom-com of some sort.
Directing is PD Jin Hyuk, of City Hunter and Brilliant Legacy. Damnit, you’re reeling me in. The thing is, with this director and enough great dramas in the past, I’ll surely give the Hong Sisters a clean slate and a shot at winning me over again. But I swear, if they phone it in like they did for Big, I’m breaking up with them.
I always love Gong Hyo-jin but she’s already played one of the Hong Sisters’ better heroines in a really great team-up with Cha Seung-won… which is kind of why it’s hard to imagine anything topping that. But she’s fantastic in rom-coms and her starring would mean that I’m guaranteed to watch. So Ji-sub isn’t really the go-to guy for comedies, but I wonder if I’ll like him more if he takes on this project. It might go a long way in making him seems less self-serious. A guy who’s willing to be a total fool for comedy can’t be ALL bad, right?
Master’s Sun is planning for a July premiere on SBS.

I really like So Ji-sub, and I like Gong Hyo-jin... but the two of them together? In a romcom? Somehow I just can't see that. :P

LOL, I was thinking that. I think for me it's because they are polar opposites! Like Gong Hyo Jin is so bubbly and filled with personality and energy and then So Ji Sub is all stone faced, steely, seriousness.
It might just be genius to pair them up but who knows!

Hong Sisters are still in a time out. Nothing they have done tops my all time Hong Sisters favorite, My Girl.
Is it wrong that I want the male lead to be Lee Kwang Soo? I loved him and Gong Hyo-Jin on Running Man. I mean if it is a rom-com, she can be the rom and he can be the com. So Ji-Sub can continue to be the inside of my eyelids. :)

Yeay for SJS starring in a rom-com!! Park Chul Woong [his character in Glass Slippers] was the one who turned me into his fangirl, so it'll be great to see him back in that type of character. Broody SJS is cool and all, but I really miss his dorky/fun character

Love love Gong Hyo-jin! She is absolutely one of most beloved K-actress. She can probably make me forget the %@$#@%$%^^%*& from the Hong Sisters in the past (Big, I am looking at you!) and actually look forward to this! Now, that's star power.

I love the Hong sisters comedy romance but I wish they stopped adding magic to it... I prefer My Girl, Delightful Girl Choonhyang, You're Beautiful and Best Love a lot more than Gumiho and Big...

I'm excited to see So Ji Sub taking on a comedy! I don't think the Hong Sisters were phoning it in for Big. They tried something new and it failed (uggh still upset over the copout at the end!). I appreciate them trying to experiment with something outside their usual formula. I think if they had done their usual thing after Best Love, we would have complained about their use of formula and lack of originality.
I can't wait for this drama to see what they will come up with. I watched that rom-com-horror movie with Son Ye-Jin as a girl who can see ghosts and Lee Min-Ki as a magician who is afraid of ghosts, but ends up protecting her in a way. I hope we'll get something like that here. If not, then I'm in for the ride anyways, because "I see dead people" is always an interesting characteristic.

haha you're right, I've always remembered the Hong sisters' last drama to be Best Love. Didn't watch Big at all cos the premise had a high chance of ending off badly. Never seen a body-switching drama gone right before... except for Who Are You? That one's goooood.
I like what the writers do, they are starting to take actors who have been typecast into a certain genre other than romcom and turn them into cute characters we fall in love with. Maybe that's because of the success of Best Love... I will forever remember Dokko Jin's cute catchphrases. Caused me some trauma, but in a good way.
If So Ji Sub really signs up for this, I'll not be surprised if the Kim Nam Gil will be on the next Hong Sisters drama. Just saying:D

I JUST watched GHJ in Best Love (which I enjoyed), but I'd like to see a different actress in this new Hong drama~
I really, really liked Cha Seung Won in Best Love the most.
I haven't watched any dramas with So Ji Sub yet so I'm pretty neutral about him so far.
I didn't realize Big was one of Hong Sisters' works...til now. Lol. I heard it was very bad so I'm not even trying to watch it.

Love Gong Hyo-jin (not only for her sublime acting, but her performance on "Running Man").
As for the Hong Sisters, I think their reputation far exceeds their actual abilities in writing.
"Hong Gil Dong" was a mediocre sageuk at best (probably one of the worst ones that I have watched when it comes to both dialogue and acting).
Not a good thing when all the main characters held zero interest for me with many of the supporting characters annoying (like the character of Sung Yuri's father who I guess was supposed to bring humor but instead, was really annoying).
Best characters were the rival female lead by Kim Ri Na and the 2 rebel leaders (before HGD took control) played by Cha Hyun Jung and Park Sang Wook (it was more the appeal of these actors than anything else).
MGIAG had a lot of flaws - weak, not well fleshed out supporting characters; an antagonist that was a bit underwhelming; a story line that really faltered and started to hit the typical K-drama clichés (wedding? over-use of characters crossing paths at opportune/inopportune moments); etc.
But despite all those flaws, it was saved by how the Hong Sister wrote and how Shin Min ah played the character of Mi-ho. Single handedly, SMA was the show and she, alone, made MGIAG worth a watch.
"Best Love" was the Hong Sister's most complete romcom.
I know that some people didn't like the character of Dokko Jin b/c he was over the top, but that was the whole point to the character and what made him funny.
Aside from the making the second male lead/rival a bit too perfect (and hence boring), the Hong sisters did a better job w/ the overall story line (pretty basic as romcoms go) and did a much better job w/ the supporting characters - but the appeal of BL was all the humor (this is definitely the funniest of the Hong Sisters dramas that I have watched and one of the funnier romcoms in general).
The kid, "Ding Dong", in particular was a memorable character, and his relationship w/ Dokko Jin was one of the best example of a "bro-mance" despite the difference in age (both hilarious at times and touching).
"Big" was a complete mess - basically goes on my pile of worst K-drama romcoms ever along with "Secret Garden", "Lie to Me" and "Rooftop Prince."
Only watched a few eps of "My Girl" - the writing was mediocre and basically couldn't handle watching Lee Dae-hae anymore.

I'm not so hyped with this news. Somehow I think Hong sister's drama only work when they cast younger actors. Not because they act better, but because Hong sister's main characters tend to overly childish. I can somehow stand early-twenty y.o. people (and under) acting like eleven y.o. kids, but I can't say so with thirty something y.o. adult. They need to realize that rom-com can be funny even when the characters act their age.

So Ji Sub is a stone face in melos/dramas but he is surprisingly good at comedic acting so I'm hopeful for this duo. I just don't like Gong Hyo Jin - I mean I know she is considered "cool", great actor, fashionista, beauty etc. and I agree that her performances are always solid but there is something about her that turns me off. She doesn't pair well with anyone I have seen so far.
While I loved Best Love, I can't help but think how Kim Sun Ah would be so much better for the role.

Urgh, the Hong sisters. Brilliant beginnings, melodramatic middles, and disappointing endings (noooo, I broke the alliteration :P). The thing with their works is that I always get so pumped when I first start watching, because the main leads will always be awesome and the storyline will always be awesome as well, but then they start getting all melo and angsty and completely ridiculous around the halfway mark. And then, their endings are never satisfying nor up to par with their beginnings, so they end up being sort of disappointing and don't redeem the drama in any way, but they're not completely life-ruining either because those angsty episodes before the finale had already done that job. Why. Seriously. And also, their use of kdrama cliches, omg. =.= It's just so annoying, because the first few episodes of their dramas are almost always amazing. And then I inevitably get hurt every time. *sob*
tl;dr - don't know if I should bother this time. D:

2 hopes: That the Hong sisters do not pull a Big...and that So Jisub sticks with this drama with Gong Hyojin. For those who are on the fence about So, isn't this what you've all been waiting for? For him to expand and test his limits in a variety of roles? I commend him if he does take that step outside his comfort zone!

Well So ji sub is charismatic ,sexy and a good guy off screen undoubtedly, but he needs a good coach for avoiding his stiffness, because He has awful in Ghost i think is his worst role in years and the industry gave him a price,unbelieveable... She is sweet but I believe as couple they havent chemistry at all I hope to be wrong indeed.

Gong Hyo-jin annoys me. I feel like she's the same mumbling, dumb character in every drama she's in. Her 'schtick' only worked best in 'Thank You.' And maybe The Greatest love. And she did have the glorious Jang Hyuk working with her then. She gets all the good male leads too. Jang Hyuk, Gong Yoo, Cha Seung-won and Lee Sun Kyun. Now she'll be mumbling awkwardly at the ghosts. I think So-Ji Sub is a terrific actor, Loved 'Ghost,' and Sorry, I love you, and his movies. I wonder what this pairing will be like.
