Choi Jin-hyuk to play Lee Min-ho’s brother in Heirs

Welp, Heirs just gets better and better. Confirmations are in for Choi Jin-hyuk, who has signed on to join the cast of SBS’s Heirs, starring Lee Min-ho and Park Shin-hye, due out this fall. The actor is currently enjoying his first big buzzed-about role as Seung-gi’s Gumiho Daddy in Gu Family Book, and now he’ll be headed straight to the next big buzz project of the year. More Choi Jin-hyuk is always a good thing, rain or shine, but it’s great to see him on the rise.

The next drama from star writer Kim Eun-sook (A Gentleman’s Dignity, Secret Garden) and PD Kang Shin-hyo of Tazza and Midas will be a 20-episode trendy drama about uber-rich high-schoolers, said to be Gossip Girl-esque. Lee Min-ho plays the lead, a high school student named Kim Tan, and Choi Jin-hyuk will play his older half-brother, Kim Won. The hyung will be thirty-one in the drama, so that makes him the only member of the cast playing older than his real age. I’m more worried about everyone else playing teenagers, but whatchoo gonna do?

Choi Jin-hyuk’s character will be a bright young executive who runs his family’s giant conglomerate. He’s (obviously) rich, but is also accomplished and capable, and basically perfect. That can only mean Lee Min-ho will be his opposite, and be imperfect in every way. I’m not too thrilled about the chaebol heir exec type for Choi Jin-hyuk, just because he’s played that role a lot, but this show isn’t exactly going to be doing new things (*coughBoysOverFlowerscough*). It’s just hopefully going to be doing old tricks in new and better ways.

Heirs airs Wednesdays and Thursdays in October.

She has good reasons to be! If only this is to happen and if only he keeps smiling ironically in that drama, too. I love his left corner of the mouth risen in a creepy-but-sexy way. That and his mane of glory, but well, chaebol do not sport those. Unfortunately.

Downside: Based on the weirdly descriptive title of the drama, that's what I'm also assuming will happen.

Bright side: Faster opportunity for a drama with CJH as the lead. Preferably with mane of glory. *sigh...*

Hahaha! I love your descriptions. And, yes... Having CJH in ANYTHING has me more interested in it, immediately. With or without his "mane of glory!" lol! I wasn't going to watch Heirs...but now with CJH in it, I think that I will give it a go. :) He really draws me in. He is a sexy, capable person to take the lead in a drama, I believe. I think that there are a lot of people that enjoy a *teeeeeny* bit older *coughmaturecough* type of character that actually treats women with some element of respect and has a good head on his shoulders (in real life ANNNDD in the actual drama) rather than the spoiled, rich brat of a *BOY* that ALWAYS seems to catch the heart of the female lead. I know for one, that I have severe "Second Male Lead" syndrome, because most of those (poor!) guys are the more mature and rational choice based on their hard work, ethics and treatment (usually) of the female lead. I hope that CJH continues to rise in the K-Drama/Movie world. He is really enjoyable to watch on screen, for many reasons. :)

Because i`ve seen their work , and both of them are bland, stiff ,one dimensional type of actors whose performance is based on how well written is their character or how well directed they are, not based on their actual talent!

But i have my opinion and i stick to it!

0

Required fields are marked *

Well, considering that the writer is the one who penned the script for SG, actual acting talent probably isn't high on the list.

While the OP and others may be a bit harsh, LMH and PSY have been underwhelming in everything I have seen them in - they may have a better performance in a particular project with a good script and PD but likely not going get the good script for this one.

0

Quit exaggerating. You make it sound like she's the Kristen Stewart of Korea or smth .

0

I totally agree she not a good actress and I have watch all her drama not due to her acting ability. Her success is totally base on coattail of great management that got her playing parts opposite of delicious eye candy. Sadly eye candy apply to actor, an actress need to know her stuff and what she has deliver so far it just a little worst then Kristen Stewart, at least Kristen Stewart don’t make physical contact seem disgusting. Since I have my own eye candy at home, I'm only vested in good acting, great script and if I pray enough some originality so I be skipping this one and continue with Ugly Alert.

0

That last sentence says everything about you. I am so done.

0

Not going to get a well-written character/dialogue based on who the writer is.

0

i so agree with everything u said! im not a fan of either LMN or PSH, but imma definitely gonna give Heirs a try, since i reallllllly like CJH, i think he was great in Gu family, im hoping to see him as a main lead soon enough

0

So agree...PSH is so overated, like so many of the other Korean actresses in their twenty's that keep getting lead roles.

The new addition to the cast does sound promising. My fears lie in different direction. Do hope it is not going to be too "gossip girl-esque" but will be a storyline that is original. Surely, one can expect that from a renowned writer. I also wish the characters have substance else a cast no matter how good will not be able to do justice to it. It is going to be interesting to see LMH make his being a high schooler believable. Shinhye can still just do it. I do wonder about the other female cast. October does seem far away.

I was just talking about this with someone a few minutes earlier.
American shows do that alot too. Have older actors/actresses playing HIGHSCHOOL students doing things normal kids their age wouldn't be doing. Really, it wouldnt hurt to have a college setting. Then the viewers wouldnt have to suspend so much belief or cock their eyebrow at everything they say/do.

it's not just that he made the same role! I'm completely sure it's due to the writer! her dramas are famous even if the plot were meeeh ! and "my daughter the flower" isn't that famous, it doesn't even have ENG translation. so, many people didn't actually see him in many dramas, so to me and alot of fans this is the first time to see him in this role!
plus after this role he might get so many roles as a male lead and get famous like other actors! it's just business!
and he is a really good actor to not be famous enough! to me he can act way better than LMH, though I like LMH but CJH is just better

The accuracy of your description is stunning. May I quote you from now on when describing GG to the unenlightened folk around me? :)

Now, about the show:
The eyecandy factor alone is a guarantee that I will watch it. After all, I sat through the atrocity that was Boys Before Flowers just because of LMH and KB and through most of GG for less. This one already has so much more pretty. I know, I’m shallow …

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

Please do! I have aneurysms in my soul when I hear people say they 'love' GG. Just...arrgjjjdfkjgsldj fdkjsd ARE YOU SERIOUS

I mean, if it's a measure of where we're at as human beings...Give Me Kdrama Or Give Me Death. Really.

But yes, the clothes are really pretty (except when they fail SO HARD that you think they must have thought, 'that is so horribly ugly it's amazing' when they picked it).

I watched LMH's Yoon Sung in City Hunter for less than two minutes and totally got everything JB has ever said about him (apart from 'touching him wrongly', which I'm going to pretend never happened XD). He played Yoon Sung the way Colin Morgan plays Merlin (this is the highest compliment I can give XD), absolutely pitch perfect.

But alas, I know now that loving a character doesn't mean that I'll love, or even like, other dramas by the same actor. BOF, Faith, Personal Taste...I don't feel like I'll be getting what I'm looking for. I want to watch them, I don't want to watch them...I want to watch them, I don't want to watch them. Lol, somebody give me a flower to tear at. So I am compromising with myself: I will watch Heirs. Also because I really want to see how PSH and LMH will work together, because they're both really, really good at the micro-acting, making the small things real.

0

Agree. They both are good at making small moments work. I just pray they don't make PSH's character too stupid/naive/docile. Kdramas have the tendency to do that to their Candy types.

0

Haha you beat me to it. Everything you said was exactly how i felt about gossip girl.
It really is all eye candy. SO many purty dresses/clothes, gorgeous people, gorgeous setting, gorgeous parties. It really is a guilty pleasure. Everyone sleeps with everyone, theres alot of backstabbing and gossip, obviously. They're supposed to be in highschool but they drink, party, do drugs and have sex like they're adults. Its basically like you said, an american chaebol makjang crap. That pretty much sums it all up.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

That's hours of our lives we'll never get back XD

I would rephrase 'guilty pleasure' to 'inexplicable compulsion'. Much more accurate.

I read the other day that the CW is remaking a show I really loved as a kid, The Tomorrow People. I'm sure it will be horrible, so I won't even think about watching it.

(On the other hand, I also read that BBC are going to dramatise P.D. James' 'Death Comes To Pemberley', which is potentially very, very good!)

I find that really funny :D

Idiot writers who create (and not on purpose) characters so stupid you wonder how they remember their own names, and so boring you actually struggle with remembering their names yourself. All with really OTT clothes and "teenagers" who look like they'll never see 25 again.

Park Shin Hye should've just went to act in the Sageuk drama that stars UTW. She'll would've learned a lot and further improve her acting there.

She's already an established hallyu star so she doesn't really need to ride on LMH's fame to make her popular.

A possible critically acclaimed drama? or a possible mega popular drama? She chose the latter so hopefully this will turn out well.

Park Shin Hye and LMH are both Hallyu stars. That was one of the reasons for them being chosen by the writer herself. She was the one approaching them obviously because they fit the roles she was writing. They have a huge fandom and popularity on their own so really will not be riding each others fame. They will hopefully complement each other and be perfect in their characters.
I wish Shinhye had chosen the Sageuk drama too solely due to it being an unchartered territory for her......but she wanted to work with KES. In their meeting together before she accepted she must have liked what she heard to have picked this over Sword and the Flower that she was seriously considering at the time.

international fame?
Oh please, no one argue with you
PSH is one of the most popular Hallyu actresses,
and if you have to compare how popular actresses to actors... it's cheap tbh, just like the double standard fangirls have...
She doesn't need anyone to carry her international fame. In fact she is the first and only actress is doing her Asian tour while LMH wasn't the first and only right?

Between both PSH has both strong support from ifans and kfans... while LMH has stronger ifans but not so much from Kfans...

It's not important actually. I'm tired of the crazy fan girls putting all the actresses down because my men can do better but lol oh NO haha

0

I think so many are misunderstanding this comment. It basically says PSH is a hallyu star in her own right and unlike some nugu actress, she doesn't have to attach herself to a LMH to gain fame. She already has a recent hit movie under her belt so a role in a critically acclaimed drama would've helped her break out of hallyu teen drama land roles she usually takes. Even if this drama is uber popular I'm glad Yonghwa's no longer attached to it. Sometimes it's better to take on that small role and learn from strong actors and gain more skill than to take on lead roles just for popularity. Love all the choices for this drama but really hoping PSH takes a break from the teen drama roles for her next project.

On the fence about this show. Saaad. Lee Minho: meh actor. Pretty boy in pretty boy roles doing pretty boy things. His hair NEVER gets messed up. Choi Jinhyuk: is playing the same character he's played before. And he was pretty mediocre at it. His performance in Gu is the only thing that gives me hope he'll do better this time. And Park Shinhye, man I love this girl, but Cyrano Dating Agency was the ONLY project I really saw her stretch herself in. I hope she does well in this one. But I think Kim Eunsook is the one I'm most worried about. Ha. Let's hope the story is good.

And yes, I'm still trying to accept that Lee Minho will be playing a high schooler. Awks.

I trust KES to deliver that detailed script with little cues, and maybe the occasional quiet moment, slow to start, but once it gets going and the details kick in, it'll be a fun ride pointing out all the little things that make the story tie together.

I also think something has to happen to the older brother in order for Lee Min Ho's character to need to inherit and grow up.

I look forward to this one. Master's Sun and this one are the dramas I'm pinning hope on to turn around the mediocre Korean drama season. (Nine was the only one so far, if we're not counting King of Dramas)

I hope to god it isn't like BBF (which was fun and cracky, but a trainwreck). It's funny to think that Park Shin-hye was actually under consideration for the role of Jan-di back then, too.

The deciding factor in this for me is Woobie My Wuv, though. I would have considered it anyway for PSH, but Woobie is what makes me sure I WILL watch this come October.

I don't know if my heart will survive if something has to happen to Choi Jin-hyuk.

there is more 2 this drama than a word "high school"!!
nothing can be figured out from the synopsis in Asianwiki so we shouldn't prejudge!!
Kim eun sook is the queen of romance-comedy dramas!!

If her drama turns out 2 be one of those with repetitive plot, scenes and so on,her drama will become a COMPLETE FLOP!!!(=failure)!!
and if that happens the FIRST PERSON 2 blame and criticize is Kim Eun Sook!!!!
all the actors have blindly trusted her!! SO SHE KNOWS HERSELF THAT IF SHE WRITES SOMETHING MEDIOCRE,ALL THE FINGERS WILL BE POINTED 2 HER!!!!!!!!!!
SO,please be patient and DO NOT PREJUDGE!!!

No judgement but definitely concerns due to the fact that it is high school gossip girl scenario or something like that. I wish it would be an original drama and not based on anything.

I hope this is a good drama. It has too many amazing stars to flop. I hope that the story carries them and that it's a good role for everyone.

Choi jin hyuk is the perfect example that a good actor can't shine on its own. it is a fact that he has been acting for a while but only now we can see his talents

So glad.

His brief performances in the Gu Family Book foundation story made him an instant HIT with me.... I'll always be looking for his next roles....

Considering that it's SBS's drama, is it going to be a very, very, tame version of Gossip Girl? Because that's going to just be BOF, sans Jan-di. I don't know what to think of this--and why does Kim Won's role have importance.

This show has a great set of actors; now to ponder whether the script will be any good. I'm not passing judgment, but I'm not going to deny that I'm wary of what will come out of this.

Too many high school dramas of late.

Why do a Korean version of Gossip Girl?

I like the cast so the actors will do well if the director and the script is original and well written. I hope they don't dwell too long in high school because the actors look too old. Why not college?

I think that with the heavy pounding that
Lee Min-ho took over "Faith," he came up
with something along the lines of: "OK,
I knocked my brains out with "Faith,"
and it wasn't the success that I hoped
it would be. So I'll give everybody what
they want........Gu Jyn-pyo, Part 2."
(A part that LMH can play while asleep.) :(

By the way, I think that "Faith" was his
best work ever. Subtle acting when needed,
(true, no fireworks, but the guy wanted to die)
beautiful black & white "ice fishing with
dad," snappy choreography for the fight
scenes, excellent supporting cast, etc, etc....

So what was all the "Faith" controversy
about, anyway? And the Phillip Lee "eye
surgery?" Anybody know what happened?

All they care in Korea is rating! Nobody gives a shit about good performance!

Case in point- Han Ga In wining best actress for Moon t.e. Sun!

I totally agree with you!!
Han Ga In's acting sucks! she has acted terribly in her last drama.
the child actress has acted much much better than her SO SO SO the rating is due 2 good acting of the children cast!!

I watched Faith religiously* (hehehe, I'm a troll, I admit it XD), but I think LMH's best role was City Hunter. You could see him pushing and growing as an actor in that role. He gained many fans and more respect as an actor for that role. I thought he was pretty much coasting in Faith and that at the end of it he was just really tired which is totally understandable given all the action scenes.

I agree. He played a character who was severely depressed. The only thing that kept him going was his sense of duty. But that duty was to characters who were willing to casually put his life at risk, and who basically just used him to serve their own agenda. This deepened the depression. People have criticized the performance as wooden, or lifeless. But isn't that what depression is?

Watching with subtitles, it's impossible to make any value judgments on the overall quality of acting. The only thing I can say is whether the physical performance made the character come to life. I thought his physical performance did that.

The problem I had with the execution of the drama was that it was (as my grandma used to say) a mish-mash of themes. The male lead played in a beautiful, quiet, serious story about depression, duty and finding meaning in living. The female lead performed a sitcom about a shallow self-absorbed character who was learning to care about others. The villains performed in a manga about holding on to power when faced with a dying (supernatural) era. The king's story was played as a historical drama about a man finding his voice and his subsequent founding of a new political era.

Pulled apart, each component was interesting. Put together, it was a jumble of discontinuity.

I think it's an odd thought to expect the ACTOR playing the male lead to somehow harmonize everything. Seems to me that he was just doing what he was asked to do in executing someone else's vision.

Performance-wise I thought he did a commendable job playing his character in the sub-drama that he was assigned to. But, again, I can only rely on watching physical performances. So there might be a whole lot that I'm missing.

Oh, and one more thing. Something seemed to change after the first few episodes. Like he was executing a new artistic vision.

In the first couple of episodes he put in more of that cheeky attitude that he does so well. Then there is an abrupt shift to being completely subdued. That shift seemed to me like a change in what he was being asked to do. It was like there was a change in the overall vision for how the story of the character was going to be told.

Had he been able to keep the initial cheekiness, the character would have been more dynamic.
