CN Blue’s Lee Jung-shin joins Sword and Flower

I don’t know when it became the sageuk staple to always have a flower boy bodyguard in your cast, but I guess you don’t hear leading ladies complaining about it. Or me. KBS’s upcoming Wednesday-Thursday drama Sword and Flower has secured Uhm Tae-woong and Kim Ok-bin to headline, and the heroine now has herself a devoted admirer in CN Blue’s bassist Lee Jung-shin.

The new drama from Equator Man and White Christmas director Kim Yong-soo and the writer of Mom Is Pretty is a romance thriller that takes place in the Goguryeo era. Kim Ok-bin stars as Princess Mu-young, daughter of King Young-ryu, and Uhm Tae-woong plays the illegitimate son of the man who assassinates the king. The two fall in love, which is severely complicated by the fact that they’re on opposite sides of a coup, a revenge plot, and all the attendant political unrest.

Lee Jung-shin has been cast as Shi-woo, Goguryeo’s best swordsman and bodyguard to the princess. Why the country’s best bodyguard isn’t guarding the king is beyond me, but maybe that’s why he gets himself assassinated? Shi-woo will be nursing a lifelong crush on the princess, of course, because it’s his job to be her shadow and also, there’s just no such thing as a bodyguard in dramaland who doesn’t love the person he/she is guarding. His character is described as charismatic when fighting, but a hopeless romantic when it comes to the princess.

Lee is actually the one member of CN Blue I haven’t seen act, but he was in the insanely popular weekend drama My Daughter Seo-young, and Sword and Flower will be his second outing as an actor. Silent shadow bodyguard with a lifelong unrequited love is usually a good role for rookies — few lines and you get to look cool. He does play a part in the romance though, as his character will eventually step up to oppose Uhm Tae-woong, so let’s hope he’s up to the challenge.

Sword and Flower follows Mandate of Heaven and premieres in July on KBS.

I only watched the 10 first episodes of My daughter Seo Young and well he wasn't that bad!
He wasn't overacting or anything and, for a first drama, I found he was better than some other idol !

I think he's good, coz he was able to pull-off his role as an aspiring model and actor who keeps on feeling nervous therefore sucks =). But his role is young and boyish in MDSY. I wonder if he would be able to pull-off being manly and best swordman

When Kang Min Hyuk where asked who among the 4 members of CN Blue is the best actor. He said Jung-shin is the best, he is second and the last is Yong-hwa. I laughed so hard coz he's so candid and said it in front of their leader, JYH =)

He said last was Jonghyun, all members have the comun agreement that Jonghyun is the last one. Jungshin is probably the best.

watch the real show when he said that, in article before wasn't that clear that intent to promo still, but if you watch the actual show minhyuk said yonghwa the last one

He's probably the best actor out of all the CN Blue members. He improved greatly over the run of MDSY, and in the end stage of the drama had a pretty meaty birth secret plot line with some pretty intense scenes, and I think he pulled it off well. Obviously still room for growth, but I've definitely seen worse idol-actors. Lol.

He got better by the end of the drama. I watched a few episodes here and there, and I watched the last few episodes as well.

I think he is a decent actor, and the best one out of all 4 CN Blue members :)

I watched My Daughter Seo-young and NO , he wasn't good at all even compared to other idols .
but if he is one of those people that actually show improvement with each role , then I don't mind watching him because I can think of a lot of other idols that have no business being in dramas .

I haven't seen a single episode of My Daughter Seo-young either... It was a long-running weekend drama that I couldn't quite get into. But here's to hoping he does well in his second drama. ^^

Yes, agree with you. In my book, out of 4 CNBlue guys, the 1st is KMH, 2nd LJS and the last: JYH. While the lead guitar guy said in an interview that acting is not his call, he wants to concentrate on making music only.

Actually, they've all acted before. Lee JongHyun was in A Gentlemen's Dignity, playing the kid of a man-kid.

Peeps, I think you are right here, but I have to say that by personality (burning) and skill (he apparently studied Tae kwon do), Lee Jonghyun would be a better fit for this role.

Saying this, it will be interesting to see Lee Jung-Shin stretch a bit for this role and see what he does with it.

I like CNBlue in general (think music here folks as they could be my kids if I was a young mother).

Uhh, him opposite UTW in winning the lady's heart? @_@
He's ok in MDSY, but compare to Kang Min Hyuk, the drummer who acted in My Husband Got a Fam, I love KMH acting better. Soooo..... Idk what to expect, he's way too newbie to act as UTW opponent in my pov. I hope he proves me wrong tho'.

Wait, he's the second male lead? I was under the impression that he's like Gu Family Book's Gon in this drama: harbors romantic feelings for his ward and is very protective for her but not really the main rival to the hero.

I have not seen MDSY but I've heard some people praise him.

But then my love for Uhm Tae-woong would be enough to pull me into this sucker, so I will definitely watch this.

I watched EM all the way to the end because of the Uhm-force, but it was like watching or playing baseball.
Long stretches where..........nothing.......really.......happens.........on........ screen........but........staring.........thensuddenlyactionflashingthenends followed.......by........more.......wordless......people.......waiting......for......someone.....to......respond.

Hmmm...Jungshin-chingu's acting is okay-ish, but opposite Uhm-force? In a saeguk? With CNBLUE's world tour going on? o.O
On a more positive note, at least it's been proven that he'll rock the Mane-of-glory ^^

Jungshin-chingu!!! I remembered that one. The only WGM couple that I followed was Goguma couple because they both are so... awkwardly shy! Its fun to watch them. After that I stopped watching...now following the global couple.

My sister and I would still say "Jungshin-charyeo" to one another whenever we go crazy over anything~

How did I miss before that this was being directed by the same person who directed my absolute favorite Kdrama White Christmas?! OMO! That drama has some of the best directing of anything I've ever seen made in any country on the big or small screen! And while Equator Man had some definite moments of crazy writing-wise, the directing was definitely a strong point. My anticipation for this drama just increased a million fold.

Flower boy bodyguards are legit the best choice. No lines, they stand around to look grim in the background, and can throw their hair around looking fabulous. While Sung Joon is being cute, I personally think he's a bit wasted, since his character is quite one dimensional and really just bares his teeth (like the rest of the trope). I've followed all of his projects and think he's an amazing actor, but he feels really flat in his current one, so I'm going to guess it's the role.

Jungshin was okay in My Daughter Seo young. He didn't really have to stretch himself too much, and was cute enough I guess.

I dunno I think Sung Joon's acting is kinda uneven. I mean there are some terrific bodyguards *cough*K2HEarnestBot*cough* around who had a whole range of emotions and were stealing scenes left right and centre but SJ probably still doesn't know how to do that well enough yet. And I do wish they would stop messing up his hair!!

I haven't seen Jung Shin act so not sure how he would do in a saeguk up against Uhmforce, but I do hope he does well. Love CNBlue's music.

Lee Jung Shin does looks good with long hair. His acting is OK considering he is a rookie in the acting arena. I'm sure he will do fine. But, FNC Music shouldn't over work the 4 CN Blue members. They are doing a world tour. Shouldn't they get some rest? Young Hwa has already got dark circles around his eyes and looked extremely tired. Hope Jung Shin will not follow Young Hwa. You don't want them to burn out.

Haven't seen him act yet so I can't speak on that. However, until recently he actually did have long hair, and he's quite tall and graceful. I'm thinking sageuk will, at the very least, LOOK good on him.

He was okay. Then better at the end.

But UTW just oozes charisma on screen. How is he going to compete? Uhm-force has a decade or more on him.

LJS amongst Boice is pretty popular and personally like his variety personality and he's kinda sweet. But he ain't got the built or age to be a challenge. It's going to be like a puppy dog vs the Top Dog.

Now why I reference dogs? Hmm...

He was pretty bad in MDS at first but as the episodes progress, his acting got better and the character prove to have a valid story line in the drama.Unlike Jonghyun's character in Gentlemen's Dignity.

I sure hope his character has a little comedic air to it.Coz i find it to imagine sword fighter in him without any humor to it.

Among all the members of CN Blue,he probably has the most potential as an actor

he won't be a war general, i dont think his role will as big as real 2nd lead, Gon from GFB will be better comparison, i think beside the romance the story will focus on Yoon Gesomon (the lead male's father) father conflict with his own son, that father i think will have biggest male role after Uhm Tae Woong and maybe there will be another guy as his father's person who will has big role as well

i watch him in my daughter seoyoung he act good for his role as rookie..but when it come to romantic role..mm...so not he originally will have love story in my daughter seoyong but he just don't have chemistry couple at all with the girl who originally plan to be his gf...then the scriptwriter may notice this as well the love story end up being push the writer then give him bromance instead with the aspiring actor uncle..

Oh God. I cant help but snigger at the obvious 'marketing to younger generations' ploy by having this guy cast.
Tbh, he was pretty bad in seo young.... I find myself in stitches imagining him in sageuk, with a song seung heon eyebrow on and longing staring.. Nah, I'll pass on you flower boy. I like your band's music if that's any consolation.

Oh? Do I hear people swearing and retorting me and my comment? Well if so.. Out of the obligation of so called level headed politeness, perhaps he wont stick out too much(like JB said, few lines). But whatevs. Why am I even commenting? I must be in a bad mood.

If flower boy body guards is the thing this year, I'm really not complaining. Although I'll have to admit that it still isn't enough for me to follow the series. And now I suddenly have the urge to go through all the series from this year and a couple from last year to pick out all the good looking flower boy body guards. Anyone wanna help? :P
