Jang Geun-seok cast as Pretty Man

Well, duh.

They could not have been more literal with the title if they tried: Jang Geun-seok, poster boy for the pretty-boy set in dramaland, is heading back to television with a show titled… wait for it… Pretty Man. Yes, really. It’s both entirely appropriate and a terrible title.

But don’t write it off, because writing it is Yoo Young-ah, the screenwriter of one of the biggest hits of the year (and also of all time), The Gift of Room 7. That movie earned not only top box office receipts but plenty of praise and viewer love for its heart-warming and sweet daddy-daughter comedy. Writer Yoo also scripted heart-tugging sports movie Korea (As One), so the talent isn’t lacking on the writing front.

Pretty Man is based on a manhwa of the same name, and features a main character named Dokko Mateh (Matte? Matei?) who possesses “the most beautiful face in the world.” The story unfolds as he goes off in search of both his lost family and true love, and somehow decides that said true love will be found among ten of the “top 1% women in the nation” (one wonders what criteria he uses). The subtitle in the image below reads: “To conquer ten women.” Uh.

Despite that thoroughly off-putting description, the project has got my interest, albeit mixed with some wariness. Jang Geun-seok can be fantastic when he’s on, but he’s not immune to bad projects. And manhwa adaptations have had mixed results, so there’s no guarantee there. Producing is Group 8, the company behind manhwa-turned-drama blockbuster hits like Goong and Boys Before Flowers. Sure, they’ve had a few misses (Playful Kiss, Birdie Buddy) but they seem a natural choice to be doing material like this.

Pretty Man is currently casting, and is aiming to broadcast in the latter half of this year.

Is he going to be blonde? I'm not much a fan of his but that's not a god look on any Korean man, no matter how much they'd like to believe otherwise.

I would normally write off manhwas like these, but the art looks nice and it looks good. Doesn't mean the drama will be good though especially w/o knowing who the director and PD of it is.

Anyways, I'm really sick and tired of Jang Geun Seuk choosing these kind of roles in these kind of dramas though. I give up on him doing otherwise.

I think JGS is getting too old for this whole " am not really all that good an actor but i have an aura" mess his been riding on since YAB. IDK everything he has done since then has been rubbing me the wrong way.

Ah JKS...how we have waited for a new acting role. I'll be honest, I am worried that this is too close to this box that he has trapped himself into, but that's not entirely his fault. The industry pushes images because they sell. Diversification is dangerous when you can't predict the public's reaction.

Outside of his acting he seems to do whatever he wants, be whatever he wants...I wish the acting world afforded him the same freedom.

That being said...I think he's a good actor. He takes these seemingly vapid roles and makes them better. For all the hate Love Rain got, by the time it ended I really loved it. There was just an inherent sweetness and melancholy in all of it.

I'm really rooting for him...I will watch his new project for sure. I want so badly for him to break out from that box he's trapped in.

Depending on how the storyline is handled, this could do it. We shall see...

actually don't worry.. in fact Sukkie has many Love Rain fans I notice and those haters are isolated case only.. I notice that from the comments from Love Rain vids posted out there and many just find Love Rain the best drama they have seen.. personally myself too after watching many other Kdramas for years.
Moreover, Sukkie have been offered many drama scripts but he only picked on this one finally.. as eels, we always trust his choice ^_^

I don't worry about eels kkkk because I am one. I absolutely adore him. But I worry about non eels...they judge him so harshly at times because they don't follow him as closely and so his choices may seem strange to them.

But I agree with you about Love Rain...of his roles it is my favorite now and it was a really satisfying drama in the themes it covered.

I have no problem with the real JGS. It's his life and he's making bank doing what he likes. My interest in a drama is not based on my opinion of an actor's current lifestyle. JGS is a good actor and the writer is awesome; so will definitely check it out.

JSG has been drinking/partying way to much, it shows on his skin the kind of life style he has, and soon he won't be ''pretty'' idol he likes to be if he doesn't care about his image at alll;

What JGS does as a person is not of concern but when he enacts a role, his appearance should not overshadow that of the character being played by him. It takes away from his performance as an actor because one starts seeing him more than the character in the drama. It was different when it was a requirement of the role as in YB or MMM. He should really shy away from roles like those and challenge himself with totally different ones that we can forget the actor and just enjoy the performance and the drama. As a well-wisher I truly hope he can do that in this new project.

Yeah that's exactly what I think! It's like he either keeps picking roles that are similar to himself or somehow convince the writers to change their characters to be more like him. All I see in his latest projects is him playing himself because all the characters are vain pretty boys with princess hair and ugly clothes. And it's fine if he's a vain pretty boy with princess hair and ugly clothes in real life but I'd love for him to just pick a role that's interesting and challenging and totally different from himself already.

Thank you for sharing the good news on Jang Keun Suk's upcoming drama Beautiful Guy/Pretty Man. I have been waiting for this news in anticipation.
It was enjoyable reading all the comments through to 69
Yeah, that's what you do when you love everything about JKS. Those who passed on a comment shows a commendable act because you know where to draw the line. The negative comments were interesting because it shows the magnetic effects JKS has on us. You can't resist sharing your time on him since he's still under your skin. Criticism makes us a stronger person.
Jang Keun Suk will be Jang Keun Suk because he did not become "The Jang Keun Suk" overnight. He is an admirable actor who has worked his way up to where he is and has 20+ years experience under his belt.
Some may like the image he expresses to play his character and some may not. Bottom line, he is playing his part because he is an ACTOR!
Complaints because you care enough on his smoking and drinking is because he shows this to you.
This is JKS. Honest, sincere and hard working. No pretense or misleading your love for him.
Professionals who have worked with him have nothing but praise on his acting skills, understanding, caring and most of all respect towards co-workers. I personally would add integrity for which i admire in him, following all his interviews and activities. Loved for a reason, by me.
So i cheer him on by saying: Go, Asia Prince Jang Keun Suk and show us more of your acting skills.
Yes! The most beautiful man in the world. Spiritually and physically. Eels only see you!
Note: Don't play the PS card because everyone in the industry knows his tight schedule since 2010 - present, he has no time to spare. A hard working successful person of which may not apply to many of us here. PEACE and GOD BLESS.

Ahhh... Funny how some fans act like they know their bias personally and professionally. In this K Ent World, all is about the looks and the reputation. Interviews? Variety shows? Scripted lip service in 99% of the cases.
Blind love is a scary thing, really. I prefer to keep my critical mind and my free will, thank you very much.

Sorry, to disappoint you but this is not just some fan.
I'm an experienced, retired professional old fan/eel.
Way past being into the so called blind love and looks of a person. There's nothing scary for me because i have learnt to see the world and people in this world through the eyes of love and admiration, when due.
You have a pretty good discipline yourself, where you choose to keep your critical mind and free will to yourself.
So while others choose to exercise their freedom of speech and thoughts, either in their profession or personal life i feel that they don't require any criticism from you since you aren't 99% sure of the fact that they are sincere or not. Leave the free will to the eyes and ears of the beholder, too. Let's try to be fair in this world. PEACE!

I may not like his appearance at all or any of his projects in recent years.......but I never miss reading any of JGS interviews because I find many of his thoughts about life and struggles to be very illuminating and wise. It's that approach that has made him a successful person despite all odds.
I came across an album online .......of his photographs along with his quotes on various occasions compiled in a very creative and beautiful manner. It is definitely worth reading and gives an extremely good insight to his thinking and what he is actually like buried beneath the outer superficial appearance. I would be proud of claiming some of his statements. One just cannot dislike a person who can think like that.

0

he's very cool..that's why many japanese like him..kakkoi like a comic character..and a sincere person..to add to his quality.

0

Nobody can deny the sheer hard work, discipline, strength of mind, intelligence and talent of JGS in achieving what he has. He is a good example of a pure self made man and that too at such a young age. I am always full of admiration for such people. That is not in question.
I just hope to see him maximize his potential as an actor too without letting his actual appearance overshadow the characters he plays. He would make a great impact if could play a part different from the ones that we continue to see after 2009. I wish this drama had an intense, masculine action hero role for him to play......something totally different, to get rid of the image that keeps being reinforced.

Ditto! His face changed since then.... PS it is! He was a cute looking boy and a good looking teen but he did something to his face which makes it a major tick off. I don't really care much about PS but botox on his lips is making him look so weird. His face and lips reminds me of Mickey Rourke. But I don't really care...and like you said "Beautiful Child"...it seems the word "beautiful" has stuck with his for good. He is is a good actor and once I used to be his fan but lately it seems he is stuck to his "beautifulness".
It appears that he is influenced by Visual Kei artists lately but whatever he does and wear makes him look like a imposter (him made up as Harajuku ga-ryu was scary as hell). I hope get his act together and concentrate on his acting and career since it looks monotonous lately... Hope he surprises us all by proving us all wrong...

JGS in YB was not about finding him pretty. He was successful because he put life into the character in a way that earned him huge popularity and followers everywhere. He fit the bill perfectly according to the script and requirement of the role. He along with Park Shin Hye, Yonghwa and Hongki popularized the drama to the extent of remakes in Japan and Taiwan.
JGS in MMM also fit the role well. It's a different story that the drama had many other shortcomings.
It's just that the image of him with similar mould cannot be removed from people's minds because of his continued selection of projects where his characters give off the same vibe.
The challenge for him as an actor would have been in a role where people would not use words like pretty, beautiful, feminine appearance etc. like we have got used to seeing since YB days. People would sit up and acknowledge him as who he really is......a good actor .

Actually,JKS is quite pitiful. He seems to be totally lost.Up till now,the only dramas that audience accepted his acting are in 2000s.Put fans aside because fans are always blind to their bias wrong choices. It will be matter of time,3years?2years?,before he will be enlisted. Many actors at his generation have already tried and still trying to act in challenging roles.More or less, they are entitled as good actor and have strong support from entertainment industry and kdrama lovers.THEY MAY NOT TO BE FANS OF THEM.MS will definitely take away their fame.2 years in not a joke. Many younger actors will come up and over take them, like they did for previous generation.when they come back from MS,at least, quite a handful of them can say "i acted in this dramas, and I got excellent acting awards and etc." I wonder what will JKS say.YAB is good but not really recognised in Korea. His Asian whatever image is not accepted in industry,no recognition for acting other than best new actor awards years ago(popularity awards are not acting award),does not gain any respect as actor due to lack in depth in roles he played, full with weird scandals.Pathetic JKS.I seriously worry for u.I thought ur new drama can save you but this seems no different from ur previous roles.

actually on the contrary, I find he is not lost but very smart move ^_^ if you may notice, many chose the historical & action dramas because they know general Korean public love this kind of dramas and will get the best TV rating from those who watch TV.. the benefits go to the TV station and advertisement... but we are in the internet generation. most younger generation don't watch dramas on TV or care about the ads on TV, most watch over YT or DVDs or cable TV (paid).. and since he is young, he should play those roles which can he play now without feeling awkward... for those serious action & historical dramas, I'm sure he will play those roles later in his actor life as he is always passionate & professional in his acting career.

I see an extremely handsome, well-spoken, well-educated gentleman with a generous nature supporting charities and funding scholarships for students at Hanyang University. I see a free-spirit with the joy of life in his heart, a creative spirit, who acts, sings, composes, dances, directs his own stage, DJ's, hosts. Jang Keun Suk cannot be pigeonholed into actor only, singer only....he's too talented in too many areas.
Who cares about the length or color of someone's hair, whether they choose to use eyeliner or not, I prefer to see the quality of the person. Korea is a free country, is it not? Then why is everyone so critical of one of their own, Jang KeunSuk?

I love all Jang Keun Suk dramas. He portray each character differently not only in acting but appearance too. That's what make him different from any other actor in Korea. I know most of you don't like him in MMM but it is in this drama that I discover him. I want to watch a very light heart drama at that moment, the one that not complicated. Even if this drama has a unbelieveable storyline it's so funny that it make me feel great. I notice him there because he is so beautiful in that drama. I already seen BV at that time but I did not notice it is the same actor because eveything is so different. It is as through he a different person. His interperation of the role given to him is so amazing. I know about him when I do a seach in the net to see his other drama. Only then I discover he is the same person. I also love him in BV and I think that he still in the learning stage at that time. Just because his appearance is manly and 'normal' in BV everybody think it is his best work but I think he cannot outshine his 'maestro' in there. Later as I see his other drama I can see he is improving in acting but people just don't see it hard enough because the charater he portray is not a serious role and his appearance is not 'normal' by all those 'unprofessional' critic who think they are very good in giving judgement. You cannot compare a serious drama to a romantic comedy. Like you compare an apple to an orange. It is not easy to make people laugh as well cry in a drama and he can make people laugh and cry in his drama depending on his role. I salute him for that. So I'm definitely will look forward to his latest drama.

Meh...I was hoping he will pick a masculine drama/movie or maybe something dark/thriller that doesn't rely on his looks but his acting ability. I guess I'll have to wait again. He has the potential to be a great actor but his dramas that he had done in the past doesn't showcase it. Therefore, I'm not impressed. I like him but not enough to be a fan.
Additionally, I'm not a fan of the Boys Over Flowers/Playful Kiss so I'm not even going to attempt this drama as it's done by the same company who tends to prioritize looks over talents. I just wish JGS the best of lucks. Lately, his dramas didn't do so well in the ratings category.

There are those who got the pretty face with no talent and still get a new project every year. I'm not going to name names as I don't want to start a fan-war. JGS is good but not great. His dramas targeted toward teens/pre-teens and it would be nice to see a change of target. I want a more challenging role for JGS.

i'll be looking forward for this new project.he is such a very talented young actor in his generation.he is young and in the process of experimenting things and enjoying it to the hilt.what matters most are the experiences that he gained or he would gain from it .he would always be my number one favorite korean young actor.

YAB sounds silly too and there are major plot holes in that drama. However YAB is still one of my fav k dramas. So i won't dismiss this drama first. The writer is giving a little hope. Hopefully it will turn out to be a nice drama.

masculine / manly ---> that is conventional

but as a real actor, he didn't limit himself to those roles..although, I somehow agree that his roles for these past years are those suited to teens, but he's in this age, right?? lol. He can choose manly / masculine characters at his right time.

on the contrary, the character in the 'Beautiful Man' may give him the flexibility to try out different charms. He can even act manly here (..okay, and change his hairstyle..which a lot of you are looking for obviously), because the character is exposed to successful and professional women. And a character who will seduce them is basically not the teenage-type (or girly..as you all say) of guy..rather, will also need to portray a successful and more serious-type of guy.

Let's just wait..I think he's already received too many negative comments even before the airing of his dramas, mostly from people who don't even follow him (meaning, baseless).

oh, and the rating -- is such a shallow measurement for an actor's ability. :) Good thing JKS himself doesn't look at it. He's more concerned on what he learns as an actor during the series. :)

well said Luna.. but actually I notice the negative comments are quite isolated.. All the reports from Korean media sources are positive comments so far for this drama.. Just hope no twisting of the news when it comes to JKS as some internet source tends to twist the facts taking advantage of viewers who don't understand the Korean language media

now that you mention it QQeyes007, Korean media nowadays are giving positive feedbacks not only to this drama, but also to his versatility as an artist.

True, I agree translations of articles can easily be twisted especially if it's something / sentence that comes from him. Not all are of help in sharing bits of information about him, that's why he's also prone to be misunderstood.

if you don't know he popularity in Korea is ... close to nothing right now
And I don't think the new image in this drama will help him get any better

lmao although he said he doesn't care about the ratings but he blamed productions/writer/ and other actors actresses for the failures of his dramas
He is such a ironic looser

There's a lot of pretty Korean actors out there. Song Joong-ki, Lee Jun-Ki, Kim Soo-hyun .. A lot! (minus my most favorite pretty boy who's in the military now- Yoo Seung-ho). Why Jang Geun-seok? Sorry dear fans of him~~ I just don't like his looks recently. Been seeing his posts on LINE, and he really looks ODD. >.<

P.S.
I used to like him before, too. Where's the goddamn pretty looks huh? :(

Huhu~ It's probably only JGS is interested to take this role! Ckckck. "The most beautiful face in the world"?? Eww, Seriously? He’s not even pretty!!! He was all full of
himself . O_o.

Hmmm..sounds typical idol/ teenage drama. I actually expecting him to take a challenging role, he need to be brave enough to step out from comfort zone. I used to like him because YAB, but nope..nope anymore. Hallyu diva euphoria seems drown into his mind

Oh my god, here he goes again, threatenning the world with another crappy serie, he just want to take advantage of the blind girls who love him, take their money and spend it with his real boyfriend.
I used to respect him before, but he is now ASIA PRINCEEEE , and wears makep up and dresses like any Ajumma so now I just laugh.

I want to see him coming out in the gay parade, as an actor, he has lost his skills, so I will watch the beautiful boy/girl , lol and laugh for a while

eeeeehhh..Jan geun suk puts me off. I wonder how the hell was he even considered handsome. Its just so puzzling, but i wont be watching this. He never impressed me anyway. He just puts on a face that looks like he is pissed and its getting stale, to think that he's been acting since younger days. That just pretty much spells bad.

I think some of you should respect jks fans, eels and jks himself. The drama isn't even started shooting and we don't know about the plot. Why guessing on something unseen? Believe me.I am not JKS fan.Not really.Never liked him before and till now.
But I think we should respect them(jks and his fans).

And some of you, eels shouldn't bring in other actors who are irrelevant into your conversation. Yong hwa, hyun joong, min ho and hong ki are nothing to do with this topic. Please don't start fan war,ok? I am gonna go out from this. Peace.

actually eels love Yong Hwa and Hong Ku especially too since YAB and Hong Ki is the best friend and like little brother of Sukkie.. so if any "eel" said bad of them.. most like they are not eels but anti-fans of Sukkie... they just pretend to be eels so to cause problem of other fans with eels.. so don't fall into their trap.. (especially when they say I used to be eel or fan)
have a good laugh this recent vid of We Get Married with Hongki (and conversation with JKS)

I'm done with JGS since watching "You're my pet" movie version.
" You my pet" is the manga I really love and he ruined it. Darn it!!!!!
I know he can be a good actor if he wants to, but money and his ego blind him so much, in the movie he only wanted to showcase how pretty he was and how good his singing was, even imitated NY broadway dancing and singing styles.
OMG , I was so embarrassed for him and cover my eyes half of the times, I was so scared to look at him, and this was not a horror movie for god sake!
I do not call him a professional actor any more.
He is just an idol to me and I'm done with him.
