Kim Jae-wook takes Who Are You as comeback drama

Kim Jae-wook (Bad Guy, Mary Stayed Out All Night, Coffee Prince) is out of the army and heading back to television, so mark July in your calendars if you want to catch him in his comeback role. It’s for tvN’s Who Are You, the paranormal series starring So Yi-hyun as the ghost-seeing heroine and Taecyeon as her skeptic of a co-worker. Sigh. I wasn’t thrilled about those leads, but Kim Jae-wook is a different story altogether. I’ll have to pencil this one in after all.

A few more details about the plot: The heroine wakes up from a six-year coma to find that she can now see ghosts. Kim Jae-wook will play So Yi-hyun’s boyfriend who died in an accident. Aw, is he her Scheduler? The three leads will have a love triangle of sorts, although since one of them is dead, I suppose it’ll be rather incomplete. Though plenty bittersweet. It also suggests that while the ghost boyfriend will play a prominent role in the story, the other two will have the ultimate pairing. You know, since Taecyeon is still alive and all.

The coma bit might work toward closing their age gap a bit, since she’ll be mentally younger than her years. I frankly don’t have a problem with the noona romance most of the time, but since she’s four years older than Taec, I can see how some viewers might want a closer pairing. Their characters both work at the lost and found department, and the drama unfolds as they set out to resolve ghosts’ unfinished business through the lost items they’ve left behind. Aw, and she’s the thing that Kim Jae-wook’s ghost has left behind. I’m pretty sure this drama will make me cry, and I’ll probably be bawling like a baby when he moves on to the hereafter amidst his backlit Patrick Swayze haze of glory.

Who Are You is described as being both poignant and melo, so I’m getting something of a 49 Days vibe, maybe crossed with that other Who Are You from 2008, which I also found quite stirring. It’s sounding like Who Are You will take the dramatic approach to this ghost conceit, while Master’s Sun works the comedy angle. What are the odds of both being great, you think? Better not hold my breath.

Who Are You will follow Dating Agency Cyrano and premieres in July.

It is SO annoying, how they are always placing fame above talent. KJW has so much more experience, and is ten times the actor Taecyeon is, but because of idol status and that horrible WGM (sorry fans, that show gives me the creeps) the talentless one gets the lead.

It might actually be amusing, because the dead boyfriend is going to be a lot livelier and have a lot more range of emotion than the supposedly live guy. Taec ought to be the ghost, and they could have him do a bunch of meditative sweeping like he did in Cinderella's Sister.

I still won't tune in because of my detestation of the leads - if only there was a way to just watch Kim Jae-Wook!

I agree with you about the casting. Also, 49 Days once in my life is enough.

PS: I also don't get what's the fuss about WGM. At best it's scripted silly. All that it does is messing with the netizens's heads which already have troubles distinguishing fiction from RL.

That is my main issue with the program; I think it encourages fans to make fantasy out to be reality, or to confuse a scripted scenario with real-life feelings. I don't know how many times I have heard someone write, in excited, breathless tones, that they are CERtain he really meant something by that press of her hand or whatever, or that she could never say something like that to just ANY body...
and it is "reality" TV, where people scream and shout at one another or make friends or go through a competition and the audience believes it is all real. Nope. All fiction, it's just that they get around all of those pesky union wages (at least in the US) by using non-actors in clumsy improv and making up cheesy scenarios instead of hiring a writer to craft a story.

Unfortunately, fans have been pairing up co-stars since the days of black and white silent movies. None of these nonsense is new.

0

I'm sure the fans all know deep down the stuff that happens on the show isn't real, lol. Though, I don't doubt that there may be some attraction between a few of those couples--friendly or otherwise. No need to be bothered about it, skelly!

Anyway, back to the drama in terms of the casting--in this case, I like it. I feel like the part of the ghost is gonna be the more interesting/complex character in the story. From drama-watching experience--a leading role doesn't always mean an interesting role...or good role, even, haha. And sometimes that's just the actor but then....sometimes it's not. We'll have to wait and see (or I will, anyhow, lol).

Yeah, this casting is ridiculous.

Can't stand Taecyeon.

This would be a valid point if not for the fact that Kim Jae Wook is pretty popular in japan as well. In fact I am pretty sure he is more popular than Taecyeon in Japan.

0

But Kim Jae Wook is also popular in Japan he did fanmeets there in the past. And he's also part Japanese and actually grew up in Japan.

I don't mind the age gap. Four years is nothing. Are we supposed to hang out and be in relationships with people only born in the same year or what?

Kim Jae Wook should not be second lead, and even less so when Taecyeon is the lead. That just highlights everything that is wrong with the entertainment industry.

Don't get me wrong, I like Taeyeon, but he a) doesn't have the acting skills at this point to carry a drama and b) Kim Jae Wook is going to act him off the page. (It's like with Suzy and Gu Family Book. *sigh*)

Boohoo to shows that value the popularity of an idol over the acting quality of its cast... it's like they aim from the start to be only good when they could be excellent.

I completely agree. Kim Jae-wook is a good enough actor to have graduated to lead roles a while ago (and I hope he'll do it yet, or go into movies - I thought he was just another pretty-boy actor but he really surprised me in Bad Guy and Antique), while Taecyeon should just not be acting, period.

Visually I have no problems with So Ji Hyun and Taecyeon, they don't seem like such a noona/younger pair.

I don't know why either, maybe So Ji Sub just has sharp features. I mean Gong Hyo Jin is soo pretty... maybe it is So Ji Sub, she's been paired up with actors that can do comedy rather well Cha Seung Won, Lee Sun Gyun, Gong Yoo, and since So Ji Sub hasn't and I just can't really see it. It's unfair of me to judge so quickly, but that's what I feel at the moment. :/

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think it's because they are so different in terms of acting and looks. Like Gong Hyo Jin is bubbly and smiley! And then So Ji Sub...is not. It's kinda like placing black & white together--just polar opposites. Which I guess would have the same effect as placing SJS next to Han Ji Min (isn't she around the same age as GHJ) and Han Hyo Joo because they are also bubbly and smiley, but as much as I like them both (a lot!), they don't hold much of a candle to GHJ, yet...so it's especially jarring! Who knows, though. We may be pleasantly surprised.

Yeah, I was a little taken aback that a 4-year age difference would even be noted. I've never saw Kiss Me Goodbye but the plot of this drama reminds me of a 2002 Hong Kong film called My Left Eye Sees Ghosts. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Left_Eye_Sees_Ghosts (spoiler alert: link contains synopsis of the whole movie.)

I enjoyed that movie and rewatched it again a few months ago and thought it could be reproduced as a drama. The heroine was in a car accident and momentarily died but was saved by a ghost of her long time friend. The accident caused her left eye to see ghosts, hence the title. Together with her ghost friend, they helped other ghost moved on with their unsolved business. And at the same time this also helped the heroine move on with her life after the death of her husband. The ending was bittersweet.

YEEEESSS!! I'm so happy he's finally back!!
Now I understand that most people are upset that he is not the lead because clearly he is the better actor, but c'mon think about it here. He was GONE for two years! Even before he was gone he wasn't a regular on the variety show or interview rotation so he really doesn't have a ton of exposure to the main stream. He isn't the huge name draw to a drama that Taecyeon is. And when you add in that his last drama before enlisting (that should have skyrocketed his name so people waited anxiously for his return!) did not do well. Mary Me Mary was not a huge success. It was actually pretty terrible. I couldn't even get past episode 8. Never have I finished it, couldn't do it. I happen to be a HUGE Moon Geun Young and Jang Geun Suk fan as well so that show was like naughty heaven for me. but I digress... just because you are a talented actor doesn't mean you automatically get the best roles. You have to prove yourself to be a big draw, a household name. and he hasn't done that yet. Let's just cross our fingers and hope that this drama knocks peoples socks off.

Honestly, I don't think people would be so annoyed about it if he was playing second lead to a less terrible 'actor' - he wasn't in lead actor territory before he left for the military, and I do acknowledge that he'd probably fall back into his old holding pattern for a bit (i.e. second lead roles).

The idol casting system is not something I usually have a problem with, but when it results in complete lack of talent getting lead roles over actors who could do ten times better, it does get frustrating.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

It's the second lead to a significantly weaker actor that's bothering me. I wouldn't complain, say, if they had cast Kim Hyun-soo (also b. 1988), who can act.

It's the idol casting for fame-not-talent that annoys me,

Just because you are a talented actor doesn’t mean you automatically get the best roles. You have to prove yourself to be a big draw, a household name.

Yes, you will have to prove yourself, but so should untalented actors. And the measurement, IMO, cannot only be $$$$$. That will only lower the quality of productions in the long run (standards will get lowered), which cannot be good and I personally think is wrong.

The meeting in the park of Ma-ri and Jung-in and the feeling that they will be part of each other lives in the future, and with the uncertainty that Ma-ri and Mu-gyul despite love, would actually work out-I loved the- we have broke up 12 times and are dating for the 13th time-and the ending about cross roads and choosing paths when you are young.

And I don't think the 4 year age difference will make much of a difference. The time it matters to me is really when they're like 10 years apart and you can't not see their age difference. I've seen many castings where this age difference also affects the chemistry. It's the same thing for much older male-female couple but it does work in some situations like in I hear your voice and Cyrano

Shoot I'm not gonna count him out until it's over. It's somewhat like the jdrama going on right now...the name escapes me. But the main character fell in love with the ghost and she fell right back...so. It can be a possibility. Unlikely but still possible.

The plot sounds awful. So Yi-hyun is not bad as an actress, but I cannot stand her with the short hair cut. I just cannot look at her. KJW- what are you doing here? You should be first lead and if you cannot be first lead(PDs, why?????) you should have chosen a different drama. This one will suck!

Only way I'd watch this is if there's a plot twist and kim jae wook's character comes back to life and gets the girl.

Guys, calm down. I really like Taecyeon and I agree he's not the best actor, and that KJW is amazing. Just wait and see how it turns out. You're really overthinking this, spectacularly. Just sit back and enjoy. Things happen. Can't believe the aggression. We'll be geting shirtless scenes from both, I hope.

Can we just fill in the usual fan excuses now?

– Give him/her a chance.
– He/she needs to start somewhere!!!
– But he/she did really well in [insert variety show or minor role here].
– The PD would not have picked him/her if they didn’t think he/she could handle the role. Trust the PD!
– He/she is improving! [To be repeated after every episode.]
– He/she is soooooo cute! [insert squee about dimples, abs, or the required nice/"adorkable" personality here].
– What makes you such an expert on acting/directing/casting???
– If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all! [To be is alternately with the always zippy "Haters gonna hate!"]
– and the final fangirl capper, “Peace!”

Really?
Besides, I'm no fangirl. And all I'm saying is that people can state their opinion, just with less chagrin, is all. This is entertainment people, not nuclear physics.

I change my mind. I'd watch everything KIm Jae Wook related... I mean, I survived show that must not be named in winter 2011... Why not this???

I hope this show is good. Dammit, you better be good!

Kim Jae Wook looks so freaking handsome in that solo photo!!! *-* Only watched him in Coffee Prince and that was ages ago... Didn't even finish it. x3 But I liked him.

I can't stand Taec though, so this drama is a pass.

Why is he going to be second lead? The ghost is going to have more personality than the live male lead. Ugh this is going to tug on my heart strings but Kim Jae Wook! Torn.
