Character posters for The Face Reader

What cool posters. Here’s another peek at the quirky and mysterious sageuk The Face Reader’s cast, featured in mesmerizing (and slightly jarring) close-up. I can’t stop staring at them, even though they’re kind of unnerving. Or is that why I can’t look away? Of course the extreme focus on faces is thematically relevant to the movie, but with mugs like these, why wouldn’t you? Between the meta teasers and the character posters, I love whoever’s in the promo department of this production company.
The movie features a great ensemble cast led by Song Kang-ho (Snowpiercer), who plays a gifted face reader who tells fortunes based on facial features using the practice of physiognomy. He has an assistant (Jo Jung-seok, You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin) and a son who’s learning the craft in his father’s footsteps (Lee Jong-seok, I Hear Your Voice).
The three of them get caught up in a political whirlpool of drama when Grand Prince Suyang (Lee Jung-jae, New World), uncle to a twelve-year old king, vies for the throne himself. He’s opposed by General Kim Jong-seo (Baek Yoon-shik, Gu Am Heo Joon) who had gained a tight grip on the court during the child king’s reign.
The face reader attempts to change the fate of Joseon when he’s called in (along with an entire country’s worth of fortunetellers) to tell Suyang whether or not he’ll be king. Kim Hye-soo (God of the Workplace) plays Joseon’s top gisaeng, whose role remains a mystery.
The character posters feature readings of facial types based on animals, and I swear, it’s uncanny. From top to bottom:
- Lee Jong-seok – stork
- Lee Jung-jae – wolf
- Song Kang-ho – snake
- Kim Hye-soo – cat
- Jo Jung-seok – raccoon
- Baek Yoon-shik – tiger
Is it just the power of suggestion, or do they really look like their animals? And also, how did they get Song Kang-ho’s beard to do that? I especially can’t get over how much Jo Jung-seok looks like a raccoon. That image is just going to linger in my head every time I see him now.
The Face Reader premieres in September.

I really love these posters! They just pop. and in the best way possible. It's unnerving b/c for some reason I feel when I see those pictures, they are actually intruding in my personal space but I guess that is how one would feel if they are reading your future via your face. lol.
Super interested! can't wait for it to come out!

Lee Jong-seok > I know this is totally beside the point but I love the mole under his right eye and the little one on his left upper lip. Call me crazy but I really love them :D
Jo Jung-seok's slight smile just kills me
I am really looking forward to this movie. The premise sounds interesting and some of my favourite actors are in it. So bring it on :D

My take, but looks like Jong-seok's mole on his upper lip is a little addition (like in Temptation of Wife), but I'm not sure...
The reason I doubt it's a "mole" is because I have one at nearly the same location as Jong-seok's (a little off), only now it looks a bit faded and nearly invisible.

I'm pretty sure it's real because I noticed it while watching I hear your voice (and fell in love with it^^ xD).
They've probably made it more prominent for the poster but I won't complain^^ It looks great :)

Simply beautiful. The thematic is fully exploited and you can see that the characters will be at the center of the story, not the events. Lee jung Jae, the sad lonely wolf... OMG, I love this.

Yay! Looks like it may be a sageuk worth watching, unlike some of the others lately. Great cast! I hope they really do it well and not dumb it down with stupidity, like Gu Family etc.

Whoaaaa...ok now jong suk officially has a lot of "mask" for his acting. I love how he looks different here. But still breathtaking, charming and calm. His narrow eyes are perfect here! Thanks gf for posting this beauty!

Don't see the animal resemblance. Maybe it is because I don't know who everyone is and what they are supposed to be. One guy's beard kinda looks like a lion's mane, which is kinda cool.

Gee, I wonder if physiognomy is a lost art, especially with all the plastic surgery n Korea. Or, can it see the true face, regardless of any cosmetic enhancements? LOL

NO, can't see true face after pl surgery.
Some ppl undertake pl surgery to deliberately change some facial feature that r supposed to be unfortunate.
Don't think that's the motivation for most S Koreans who go under the knife tho.

there is this one thing that i find jarring about him (just the one)
that nose job. now if it wasn't so obvious i might be able to get past it. but with him you can really tell, and it doesn't look great on his face, so that's the one thing that can make me a bit weary.
Did anyone see him on strong heart a couple of eps back. he was so shy and different from what i expected. maybe because on running man he came across as more confident. but he was endearingly honest on that show , which is sweet. I am a fan though, don't get me wrong. Very talented guy and love his current show.
Girls, will you be reviewing MONSTAR soon though? THE NEW EPISODE JUST ROCKED MY WORLD. but i swear our female protagonist is such a bimbo it's killing me. she just stands there crying, doing nothing. like do something girl, anything. eughhhhh

I love him as an actor, and his bottom lip is well, uh, appealing, but I have commented before that I find the extreme cosmetic sculpture of his face really jarring at times.

Jongsukkie just takes a minor role in this movie. h=He didn't even have his own poster at first. Then the producer team added it due to his rising popularity. So I hope his scenes will not be cut as much as in Korea and R2B this time.

BTW, just to add to Kim Jong-seo's info.
In TPM, just before Munjong dies and his weak 12-year old son Danjong ascends to the throne, with the help of both Munjong and Sejo's full-blood brother, Grand Prince Anpyeong, appoints Kim Jong-seo as the head (yeonguijeong, equivalent to today's Prime Minister) of the State Council (uijeongbu). Meaning Danjong has 2 Regents ruling in his name: Kim Jong-seo as de jure, and Sejo as half-half de jure and de facto.

The reason why Baek Yoon-shik has the "countenance of a tiger" is because Kim Jong-seo's nickname was apparently 대호 (大虎), aka "Great/Big Tiger".

Major props to the team behind these posters, they are gorgeous and their washed-out/vintagey feel matches a sageuk perfectly (plus the faces are perfect for the face-reading theme).

I am definitely looking forward to this movie! I love the movie posters and agree that the cast does resemble the animals that they are linked to. Also, Lee Jung Jae, Jo Jeong Seok & Lee Jeong Seok?! Thank you Korean movie gods. I don't know how I go to be so lucky.
