You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin: Episodes 35-36 [Open Thread]

Yay for cuteness, of which there is a lot in these two episodes. Huzzah! On the other hand, we do have an increase in the level of insufferability, which just proves that higher highs on this show come with automatic lower lows. If only it didn’t have to be this way!

Lucky for you all, there’s the fast-forward button. My general advice: Watch the first 20 minutes of Episode 35, fast-forward for one more Jun-ho & Soon-shin scene, and skip the blood-boiling rest. Episode 36 has a cute scene here or there, but you could probably just catch the last 8 minutes and not miss a lot.

The gist:

Yeon-ah is a bitch. The end.

Okay, I guess there are a few more points to be had. Soon-shin makes headway in her career and her love life, finally, though it comes at the expense of family stuff that is aggravating (so, the usual). At Soon-shin’s continued coldness, Mi-ryung gets pettier and more manipulative, and so does Yeon-ah, proving that blood isn’t always thicker than water. I’d actually argue that Yeon-ah’s worse, since while Mi-ryung’s motivation is selfish (love me, not your other mother), Yeon-ah’s is malicious (I hate you, I will sabotage you).

Yoo-shin keeps working to win approval to marry Chan-woo, and finally Chicken Ajumma gives in, in the least gracious way possible (so, the usual). She draws up a “contract” for Yoo-shin promising to move in with the Chicken Family (horrors) so she can basically learn how to be a good little obedient wife from Chicken Ajumma, who is totally the epitome of all those things. Thankfully for us all, Chan-woo is smarter than his mother and comes up with a counterproposal.

And Yeon-ah is a bitch again. The end.

Highlights:

Soon-shin impresses at her audition, and Jun-ho is just as antsy (if not more) to know the results. He paces outside her studio like a stalker person, as you can see above. He tells Soon-shin not to be impatient about the results, which is hilarious since he’s the one who can barely sit still.

Finally, he takes her to… wait for it… a fortuneteller. Pwahaha.

The tarot reader is supposedly famous, and he reads love in her cards, saying, “The man is very close by.” Hahaha. She walks out wondering who likes her and tries to think of all the men who could be near her. Jun-ho actually steps closer and straightens up, only to have her guess Young-hoon.

Jun-ho gets word that she got the part, and Soon-shin literally jumps into his arms and hangs with her arms around his neck.

Soon-shin gets her hands on Jun-ho’s old CD and asks him for an autograph. He gapes and mutters at her not to mock him, but she says it was really good and that she’s his fan now. Then she promises to have faith in him and says earnestly, “Thank you for always giving me courage.” It’s adorable how happy these two are just to be around each other.

At one point Jun-ho video-calls Soon-shin, and the call has them both giddy afterward. Jun-ho leaps onto bed like a little boy on Christmas, and Soon-shin recites a line from her script about how she always thinks of one particular person in her most difficult moments. Isn’t it such a coincidence how her script readings always happen to mirror her real life situations so closely?

Jun-ho gets cutely jealous whenever Soon-shin laughs it up with Young-hoon, like when the latter gives Soon-shin cooking lessons for her role. Young-hoon teases that Jun-ho has too much free time to be tagging along to everything and jokes when she goes to the bathroom about him following her there, too.

The whole Chicken Ajumma thing is a big ole bore, but it pays off in one funny way. Yoo-shin sighs that she may as well agree to the contract, which is so over-the-top that everybody in both families thinks Ajumma’s demands are silly. But Chan-woo asks Yoo-shin to follow his lead, and makes his proposal: If Yoo-shin is going to honor her contract to live with the Chicken Family, then he’s going to give Mom a contract of his own saying he’ll live with the Lees. Marriage isn’t about one side winning and the other side giving in, he says, and therefore they’ll both compromise and the couple will live three months in each house. HA. Chan-woo for the win.

Jun-ho flips out to see a cut on Soon-shin’s finger (from cooking lessons) and insists on bandaging it up. She remembers how he insisted on treating her the last time (with the raw beef, heh) and they have a cute session of being happy and giddy to be with each other.

And that, finally, is the thing to finally light that bulb over Soon-shin’s head as she makes the conscious connection that maybe, just maybe, she might like him.

Lowlights

Mi-ryung’s flirtation with Dr. Shin continues. It seems inevitable that an affair is impending, and its sole purpose is to give our main couple some angst when their parents get it on, which I groan at because aside from being a cheap storyline, it just feels so predictable.

Jun-ho’s mother gets more suspicious at Dr. Shin’s continued association with Mi-ryung, and while I have no affection for her, she does have the short end of the stick here so I’ll give her that. Her intuition is right on, but Dr. Shin has a pretty solid defense (that Mom’s complaint about him never talking to her is pointless since she never has anything to say worth his participation—it’s just about shopping or gossip).

Finally she sees them with her two eyes, laughing it up and playing racquetball at the gym. And while there’s been no sexual or romantic interaction yet, I don’t think it’s too far off for her to conclude that her husband’s in the early stages of an affair.

Bread Man’s thread is part highlight and part lowlight, but I’ll put it here since most of it is aggravating. This entails a couple of screechy, ragey scenes with Hye-shin’s mother-in-law, which I advise skipping entirely.

He tells Hye-shin he’ll move out because he’s sorry to have made her uncomfortable (with his confession of liking her). But when he sees Hye-shin being abused by her hateful ex-mother-in-law again, he asks why she takes it all the time. Sometimes you just have to let go, and enduring isn’t the best solution. It’s okay to yell, he says.

So when the mother-in-law orders Hye-shin to take back her cheating ex (who has broken up with the Other Woman), Hye-shin recalls Bread Man’s encouragement and finds her spine. No, she won’t take him back, and no, Mother-in-Law can’t force her to.

Hye-shin confides to Bread Man about how relieved she feels, and asks him not to move out. She wants to be friends like before, and she recognizes that she hasn’t done anything for him yet. So she’ll resume tutoring him and they’ll be friends, and for now the mood is restored. (I fear for the angst that will surely come of being “just friends,” but that’s a problem for another day.)

Mi-ryung deletes a text message to Soon-shin from Mom, which is a plot point I dearly hate. BAH! So Mom prepares a big celebration spread to congratulate Soon-shin on her first acting role, but Soon-shin doesn’t know about it and doesn’t show, and that pisses off the family.

But even worse is that Mi-ryung then plans a celebration party of her own, and makes it a huge fancy affair, and then purposely calls Mom over to see it. And she’s pretty damn smug when Mom walks in to see Soon-shin singing for the guests. I admit it, when she pulled that stunt I yelled at my screen, “Oh, you BITCH.”

Mom is so understanding, though, that she goes home quietly and tells the family that Soon-shin couldn’t come because she was sick. Of course, there are no secrets in dramaland so the family hears about it later thanks to Chan-mi (who is now Soon-shin’s stylist), and that makes them all assume Soon-shin lied on purpose. All the while, Soon-shin has no idea there was a party at home because her birth mom is a raging insecure manipulator who thinks everything is about her, her, HER.

You’d think she’d recognize that more in her surrogate daughter, because Yeon-ah pulls the same kind of stunt. First she talks up the director wanting to piss him off into un-casting Soon-shin, but has to swallow that pill when it backfires. And when Soon-shin does well at the table read and earns praise from the director and the senior actors, she fires off barbs about how her novelty will wear off soon enough and warns her not to ruin Mi-ryung’s or her reputation. Because it’s all about her, her, HER.

So then, Yeon-ah tells Soon-shin’s side to go to the wrong shooting location on the first day of filming their drama, so that Soon-shin shows up to an empty set and Yeon-ah smirks to herself when the director fumes and fumes.

I have a question: JH acted like he wanted LSS to know that he was the man (close to her) who loved her and she guessed wrong? (after they came out of the tarot reader), (or maybe her boss likes her too?). So does that mean that JH KNOWS he likes/loves LSS? Because you know, there is that space/time for a hero when he is falling in love but doesn't know it yet, aka the hero has not acknowledged his feelings to himself yet. I watched the ep. raw, so I am not sure. What do you guys think?

Now to my comment:

I watched both ep. raw, so I got only a gist and a sense of what was going on. FINALLY, in ep. 36, it is starting to dawn on LSS that she MIGHT like JH, MIGHT!!!!! I was hoping for a kiss (on the cheek, mind you. My mind is not in the gutter with those two and this writer), before the end of the ep., but who was I kidding?
I really need to let my expectations (when it comes to LSS and JH) go, really. It's hard, because it is not fair to JH :-(. I want to see him get some love and actually him seeing it, and him knowing what it is. And THEN I want to see how he reacts. Am I asking for too much?

I thought this episode made it clear that he knew he liked her, making him one of the few characters who don't have some earth-shattering Moment of Realisation. Which I really like because that is the way it generally works - by the time someone points it out you already know, and there's no Big Shock or High Drama just attached to the emotion (unless, of course, s/he killed your parents). And I swear, if the Show turns around and tries to tell us he's been responding that way entirely unconsciously there will be Words. My bet is the Angst will be when he realises the feelings are reciprocated.

I'm with you on this one. After all, he's a grown man, so he should know by now how love feels like. Only he decided to act on her best interest rather than his selfish motives. Also, he mentioned before to YA that he will no longer put love first in his life,as he was truly hurt by her before. So right now, I feel like he is trying to hold back--partly for LSS, but partly also for himself. Only, his doing such a bad job at it! Lol

Hello thorned sakura,

I am afraid I have been guilty of what KDaddict has been doing, which is fast forwarding at times during the episodes, and to be honest, I actually dropped the show (temporarily), and I picked it back up again recently. All of that to say that I missed the part where JH told YA that he would no longer put love first. It would make sense then, that he has been holding back on his feelings about LSS (for the reasons you mentioned). I really love that you have been faithfully following the show and that you understand it so well, because you sure explain it well.

I am just really curious (and I will admit it, a little impatient maybe? But in my defense, I have been waiting for 36 episodes now, so I can't be that impatient, right? :-) ) and I want to see how JH will react when LSS reciprocates his feelings for her and when she actually acts on it. I want to see the look on his face and his body language when that happens. And I agree with you, JH is doing a really poor job of hiding his feelings for LSS, which is one of the reasons why he is so adorable.

As I said in another comment here (I think that comment was to you as well), I am going to relax about this show (relax my expectations) and just try to enjoy it for what it is. You have helped me in getting there and I thank you for that. I hope your day is going well :-).

Hi ivoire,

Don't worry, I also ff scenes on my first run of each eps, but I usually rewatch every episode thoroughly just to dissect scenes and characters and make my own personal reviews. I have a fascination in human psychology and that's probably one of the reason why I was never turned off with the angst in this drama because despite it being all angsty, when you actually take time to look at each character's personality profile and the context of their culture, their reaction to their own situation is actually very realistic, which is something I can hardly say for most dramas. Of course, I don't expect everyone to study it like I do (or rather, I think I'm the only one who does it this way! Lol) and I understand everybody have different reasons for watching dramas so I also understand why some might be turned off with this type of format.

BUt the good thing is that everybody seems to agree that jjs is a gem here, otherwise my fangirl blood will start to boil! Lol

Hello Nanaki,

I wasn't so sure about that, because I never saw a moment where JH acted like he KNEW he ACTUALLY liked her and was falling in love with her. I have seen JH being adorkable with her, I have seen him being protective of her, I have seen him stalk her, cool down her soup, etc... however I have not seen him actually connect the dots and act like he knows (is aware) that he likes her.

I asked because usually, the hero goes into a phase where it is obvious to the viewers that he likes the girl, but the hero (himself) is not aware of it. So, I was a liiiittle surprised when JH acted like he wanted to be found out by LSS. That's all.

Well, it's true we haven't gotten the usual cues. And by cues I mean flashing, red anvils. I think that's a good thing, and one of the few things the show has going for it at this stage.

0

Hi Nanaki,

I think that because we haven't gotten the usual cues, I didn't want to assume and I wasn't clear. At times, I don't know how to read things and people on this show, which is why I ask these kinds of questions in the comments' section of the recap. Reading the beanies' take on the show and reading other people's responses to my comments is helping me understand the show better, which is what I seek, so I am happy when that happens. If I am not sure about something, I would rather ask (than assume, because I could assume wrong), so others can help me understand. It is part of my experience with Kdramas.

0

There were a few points where he actually said the fatal words: "Why do I care so much?" and then when she didn't want to see him, I think that's around the time he realized that he liked her, but since he can't and won't act on it directly, he keeps doing these things subconsciously and then doing them again. For example, by the time he wanted to sing "More than Words" at the camp, I think he already knew.

Usually the "Why do I care so much?" is the red flag moment where you can mark where the character says they are falling in love and realize it.

0

Oh I think he knows by now. Cos in this latest ep, his dad asked him if he has a woman, if that's why he's been smiling to himself like a fool. He said: It's not illegal if I do (have a woman that is). The problem is you.
I take it as a tacit acknowledgement that he has a woman.

Hi KDaddict,

Thanks for letting me know. As I said in my comments (twice), I watched these episodes raw. I don't understand Korean, nor do I speak it (except for a very few words here and there that I picked up through drama watching). So though I am watching and paying attention (and you know I do pay attention :-), [GFB]), I still miss out on the dialogues until the subs are available, which is usually after the recap has been posted.
I want to participate when I can (in the recaps comments), so I watch the episodes raw and try to guess and understand as best I can, which means I don't understand a lot of what is going on, and the recaps/weecaps help me in understanding when I get to read them.

That should explain some of my questions at times :-), I hope.

0

Ivoire, No problem at all. Happy to explain it to u when I know the ans.

0

@ KDaddict, great and thanks again!

0

Yups, He knows that he's head over heel in love with Soon Shin.

Remember the scene in previous episode when JJS played guitar for IU? when he said: what's important? This is the most important. you are the most important now.

0

This show is making me mad at the moment. How stupid can the two main characters be? LSS gets an acting gig and doesn't even show early like most nervous new employees. JH lets his assistant be her manager (Mr. No Balls). He can't get her to the set on time or at the right location. JH would have taken care that she gets there on time and at the right place if the writers were watching the same show that we were watching. JH covers every little detail but all of a sudden he relies on his half wit Assistant. The only part of the last episode that I liked is when WJ told off her grandmother for scolding her mom. Now I can see why we quit doing recaps on every episode. Its just too painful. I can't wait til Teacher Song and Dr. Plastic get caught cheating. He doesn't deserve his charming wife. (but he does deserve his spoiled dimwit of a daughter). End of rant....

About JH I think he knows he likes her: (some evidence from dramabeans ep 31-32 recap) She asks why he’s paying such attention to her, and he exclaims, “How can you be so oblivious to someone’s feelings?

Well, the cute scenes are so very cute. I could watch this for IU and Jo Jung-seok any day. With fast forward, that is. It reminds me of Smile, You when one of the moms went batshit crazy when the lead couple wanted to marry. The leads were still so endearing and cute all through out, but that one mother made some parts of the show so difficult to watch.

Hah! I really love your short recaps. I think it's even better than a proper long recap. Because you get to the point.

" Because it’s all about her, her, HER."

Because after I read that, I fell about laughing.

But yeah the weekend had some significantly aggravating moments. But then the cute moments were really cute. Like Joon Ho was squirming in the seat when she brought out his CD.

That man, actor JJS, his expressions are what makes Shin Daepyunim so adorable. Otherwise he would any old fart liking a young actress. And those reports in real life, is such a turn off.

I think I spent about 10 minutes on both episodes - even the highlights are swamped out by the lowlights. I think the only reason I still keep up with this show at all is that there is some kind of horrible fascination - like watching a train wreck in slow motion.

Everything else involves a hysterical female, a self-centered female, a self-centered female being hysterical, or the affair that has yet to happen. Why do the writers hate women so much?

You r not missing much of anything IMO. Besides IHYV, I find everything else I'm watching to be a pain. This has crapped out; I summon u gold, too. Qof classroom has a weird teacher that I can't comprehend. QoM at ep 3 is already slow n painful.
Looking high and low for Grandpas over Flowers tho. That's the light at the end of the tunnel. If not for it and IHYV, I'd probably be crying.

I am still watching I Summon You Gold - in some ways it is similar to this, but not near as bad - besides I am sure that soon the twin sisters will meet, and I have to see that. Queen of the Classroom I am still following, but it also seems to be going a bit off the deep end. The other two you mentioned I have not picked up on - they did not seem all that interesting.

Currently watching "Woman" (J-drama - this might be a sleeper), 21st Century Family (T-drama), "Love Around" (T-drama), and a couple of others.

I summon u Gold--I love the 3rd son. That's all. I want that evil mother of 2nd son to be run over by a truck. Wife of 2nd son--what ending would fit her?

Just a suggestion to all of you who have nothing else to watch. IHYV is awesome of course, but there's another ongoing right now that is equally if not more epic: it's a TvN drama (and we all know how great cable dramas are) called Heartless City!
Love, love, love! Unique, full of twists, and HOTNESS all around!

I thought Yeon Ah was being tricked the second time she pulled the same trick of giving SS wrong information. That would have been more amusing than watching SS walk into that empty set. -.-

No one will be listening to Yeon Ah from now on, I hope?

I almost screamed at Jo In Sung (now SS's manager?) for listening to Yeon Ah.

Then I realized that under normal circumstances you would not expect a top level actress to be so petty about a new, younger actress who's clearly not competition for her.

At work, I never rely on 2nd hand info for appt date and times. I always get it fr the horses mouth, i.e. person responsible for disseminating such info.
LSS is not being proactive enough if she relies on info that comes fr YA, knowing how YA feels abt her, abt Oppa, abt her relationship w MR.

For me one of the most aggravating things about this series is that no matter how many times LSS gets stepped on, she is still totally clueless and 97% spineless. So much so that it just goes way beyond defying belief, it is just silly. In fact that pretty much applies to this whole series - a bunch of petty psychopathic dictators (the ajummas) vs a bunch of blind sheep (every female under 30). I seriously doubt that there is really that much collective stupidity in all of Korea.

0

Required fields are marked *

yup I mentioned this as my frustration in an earlier thread too but basically LSS needs to be completely clueless and incapable of standing up for herself in order for 90% of the plot to happen.

Required fields are marked *

And heroes always LUV clueless girls, cos they r soooo innocent and guileless! Drive me nuts every time.

0

Yup Yup.
Like please don't dumb down a girl just to make the boy look good. Though in this case our beloved JH is just as dumb really.
But SS is way way too clueless. To levels of frustration because you can't justify that as part of her character anymore. You can't be this gullible 36 episodes into this stupid drama.

0

It is not only this drama - that whole adorable female doormat thing is way too common in a lot of Korean dramas. And it is getting pretty old. I realize that Korea (and many Asian countries) still has a lot of issues with women being anything but 2nd class citizens, but these kind of portrayals in show after show certainly do not help - they just perpetuate the stereotype. I guess the really sad part is that so many viewers keep buying into it. :(

0

Ancient Chinese saying: The lack of ability in women is a virtue.
I don't think the Chinese buy that anymore. But Korea being one of the more conservative societies in Asia, and inside Korea, its most conservative segment of the population might still have some (remnant) attachment to that idea. Dah!

0

Yea I take issue to dramas that portray good women as ones that almost always lesser to their male counterpart. It's not just Kdramas- the vast majority of Indian dramas my mom watches seem the same way.
Good girls either clueless, pushovers, or both. They can be sassy sure but that's about it.
Qualified women end up being connivers- too smart for their own good.
I couldn't watch I Summon You Gold for that reason. Just...no.
I just end up picking and choosing my dramas for the cute...

0

It's going to backfire for Yeonah.

Her manipulating isn't only lame (such a boring and predictable development, to be honest), but even if they fired Soon Shin after this (which I doubt), it's not like she can trick Soon Shin for the rest of her career. Such petty behaviour that is going to be revealed at some point and it won't just show that YA is a hateful person, but that she's also scared of SS – of SS's talent.

She's acting like a kindergardener and is pretty dumb on top of it because she hasn't realised that a) Soon Shin doesn't care for MR (you can have her all to yourself!) b) Junho is never care for her again, not because of Soon Shin, but because she burned the bridges herself and with her manipulations, she's burning them even more) and c) as she said, only those with talent survive and Soon Shin has talent.

Hopefully Soon Shin and Junho are not going to listen to, let alone believe a single word from Yeonah (or MR, for that matter) from this point on anymore. I wish they'd find opportunities for Soon Shin where she didn't have to cross paths with the ladies from hell.

I agree with the development, it's boring and cliche. I felt like I was on a edge of a cliff really hoping YA wouldn't go down that route. I was starting to relax because she hadn't really been relevant for a while, then BAM, I fall off.

right, I also read somewhere about that scene. They are indeed adorkable :D

Can we have just JJS and IU scenes for 2 hours in a week? *greedy fans* LOL

Totally second Liara's idea. Then we can drool and go to sleep happy.

Yeeeeeeeaaaahhh

Should we submit a petition or something? Lol

That scene was definitely ad libbed, so adorable and natural. You know how some OTP do this kind of scene and all you get are goosebumps? Not with them, their scenes just make you smile from the cute. JJS and IU's chemistry is seriously amazing.

There must be a running joke on heights. In the scene where the couple were running to get shelter from the rain, it seemed like JJS was trying to see how tall IU was.

First of all, let me just say Yeon A, you crazy bitch!!!! I hope you get discovered for the conniving, wicked bitch that you are and your star crashes down to oblivion!Grrr...

Anyway, so much cute in these two episodes. First, there's the hug. What I love about the hug was that it was not the usual suave hero hug where you see the lead guy swooping the lead girl off her feet. It felt more intimate and warm.

That basically sums up all SJH/LSS moments. Everything about their interaction gives me warm fuzzy feels and I instantly light up when I see them smile at or because of each other--it's like witnessing first-hand 2 close friends fall in love with each other. More than that, I feel like most cute scenes are adlibbed by the actors themselves (like the scene where LSS was teasing SJH about his height) coz it just feels so natural and real to be scripted. Especially since IU, though good in this drama, still has a long way to go before she can be called a great actress, and there are scenes where she feels awkward, especially the casual scenes (she delivers the heavy scenes pretty well, but I guess that's because there's a clear direction as to how you should act), but her acting is most natural when JJS is doing the scene with her. Maybe that's due to JJS leading her --or maybe she just finds him really funny!lol

And finally, LSS starts to have some awareness of her feelings towards SJH. I totally understand how this only happened now--especially with the crap she had to go through. Now that it has somewhat simmered down, she finally has the time to consider other things apart from her messed up family. She's obviously always been thinking about SJH, but since SJH always seem to be connected with her family issue or acting, she tends to push him aside or outright deny him. So its only understandable why she's only opening up to him now that she has started to come to terms with her personal issues.

Sadly, this might not mean a happy end yet for our OTP due to the possibility of an affair between their parents. Even if this doesn't actually happen, SJH's mom is already very wary of SMR and her husband's friendship. Plus the fact that YA has been badmouthing LSS to her, so she already has a bad (and totally wrong) impression of LSS to begin with. I'm still praying though that there won't be an actual affair, coz that they can still manage to either convince SHJ's mom, or rebel against her.But if the affair will actually happen, SJH's filial piety will be questioned and he will be forced to back out from pursuing any relationship with LSS.

For now though, lets just focus on the cute and worry about the 2nd part of angst wave when they come, hopefully, much later in the story.

PS: did anyone notice how JJS song and the song that LSS sang in the recording studio both have darling in the lyrics? Maybe that's gonna be their pet names later on when they're finally together!lol

Ah, talking about the songs. I really like JJS's song.
And the song Soon Shin sings at the studio is CNBlue's song, Love Light, if I'm not mistaken. IU sings it differently and of course beautifully that I hope I can hear the full version of it.

Yes! CNBlue's Love Light!

I have to go back to that part Usually, dramas choose songs from idols that are on the show. There are no CNBlue members that have shown up for a cameo so I am still trying to figure out why that particular song is used here. Anyone have a guess?

Because it has "darling" in it?lol

I think its because the lyrics probably responds to how lss' s love is going to be played in the show, the same way that jjs song is fitting for his end of the romance. She looks up to him and her love starts off as a crush for a senior, while his love came from his need to protect her. If you read it this way, it'll be easy to understand why those songs were chosen. Of course, I could be wrong but that's just my guess

Hi thorned sakura, I loved reading your comments. You are such a romantic :-)!!!!! I knew I wasn't the only one (the only romantic on this site), but it is sooooo refreshing and nice to see someone else squee at JH and LSS moments. I really loved your enthusiasm :-)...
Also, thank you for explaining why LSS and JH getting closer has been built up so slowly. Your explanations made sense and helped me understand better what is going on. I am going to relax and enjoy the show for what it is. And yeah, I will still throw my expectations out the window. I think it will be easier for me that way (to enjoy the show) :-)...

0

It was such a cute scene, wasn't it? Haaaiiizzzz...just can't get enough of the hug! Lol

Anyway, that's why I'm avoiding scenes with sjh's dad right now...really dreading the affair that is hinted to happen! Waaah

I love that Junho's instinctive reaction is to hug her when he gets the news, and that Soon Shin, though she's a little weirded out by it, reacts exactly the same way (and gets even giddier) when she finds out why.

It's a nice level of comfort, and sort of wish that neither of them ends up with a Big Moment of Realisation but rather that they just comfortably fall for each other.

I think this is exactly what is happening in this drama. I'm not sure but I think SJH started to realize his feelings for LSS around the time he saw LSS and YH on the theater date (nothing better than having jealousy kick in to make you realize how you feel for someone!lol) and finally acknowledged it during the train ride scene.( At first, he tried to contain his happiness but by the end of the train ride, he decided to just let go and enjoy the moment! :) ) After that, he has actually started to act on it like buying her heart-shaped coffee art latte and giving her comments like how pretty she is to him (which he hardly does before), but holds back coz he is unsure of how LSS feels, and since he has been burnt before, he is carefully treading the waters.

LSS, on the other hand, have only started to notice her feelings for him (of course, that doesn't mean she didn't have it before--actions speak louder!lol), which like I said earlier, is understandable given her situation, not to mention normal coz in real life, people don't fall in love with each other at the same time. So now that she has finally taken notice, I am looking forward to seeing how she is going to handle it, especially since she still thinks that SJH and YA are together. Frankly, I want her to suffer a bit, since SJH has already went through so much because of her and I want her to feel the same longing, but since that would only mean SJH suffering too then never mind. I don't think I can handle seeing SJH sad and lonely for much longer!lol

Required fields are marked *

Do you really think SS still thinks that JH is together with YA?

If that's true (which I'm hoping it isn't), I hope that misunderstanding gets clarified asap. She spends enough time with JH to know that he basically has no contact with (let alone interest in) YA....

I don't need SS suffering, she's had enough hardship (even if her lack of spine is partly to blame), I just want them to focus on her efforts in becoming an actress and her developing relationship with JH. Everything else I can do without!

Interestingly, they did have some reaction to each other way, way back (when they climbed up the hill the first time, or when SS fell into JH's arms when he saved her from a cyclist in a park), but that was before either of them consciously realised their feelings. I think both those situations might have occurred within the first 10 episodes, which is probably why we were all thinking the romance would get going much, much earlier.

Required fields are marked *

Unfortunately, I think her misconception regarding sjh/ya relationship still has not been cleared up, and in fact might even be validated for her everytime she sees ya together with sjh's family. That's also probably why she couldn't understand his concern for her (resulting to sjh calling her stupid for not understanding his heart).

If not for the little jealous bouts you get from her, I would've wanted this misconception to be cleared up earlier too. Now though, I want to see first how she would interact with ya considering her newfound awareness of her feelings for sjh before it gets clarified coz im just a little devil! Lol

but watching SS&JH's cute antic made me feeling all giddy inside, it's so comfortable and realistic sometimes i'm embarrassing cos i felt like a voyeur.

yeah i totally understand why she realized her feeling so late. SJH is the bridge between "old SS" and "actress SS", so when she decided to cut ties with acting &MR all together, she cut ties with SJH, too. IMO that's the reason of those angst in 20-29.

Jesus, whats really sad about this show is that one of my favorite episode endings, back from the very beginning, is when Lee Soon Shin asks Mi Ryung if she really has what it takes to be an actress, and when Mi Ryung says yes, Soon Shin just beams. It's such a heartwarming moment, but now I can't even enjoy it. Why you ask? Because MI RYUNG IS CRAZY. And here I thought the birth secret itself brought enough angst. All the show had to do was handle it with delicacy and maybe Mi Ryung could actually have a positive relationship with Soon Shin after apologizing sincerely and letting her go. BUT NO. Everyone has to react in the worst possible way, making the situation worse and worse. THANK GOD Jo Jung-Seok and IU are so cute.

The actress Lee Mi Sook, who plays MR is a very famous and accomplished actress. Sb said last week that they felt sorry for the actress cos this was a bad career choice for her. Well, her career has already been made. I read that she has had a fallout w her agency, which is suing her for damages and monies paid out on her behalf, and winning. So maybe this is just an acting job to help pay bills.

I loved Soon Shin and Mi Ryeong's relationship in the first couple of episodes. But then after Mi Ryeong rejected her after finding out she was Chang Hoon's daughter (which turned out she isn't), it all went downhill from there. As much as I'd like them to reconcile and be the way they were again, their relationship has gone nearly to the point of no return, what with Mi Ryeong being a manipulative crazy bitch who thinks she can one-up Jeong Ae in everything she does.

Chan Mi - world’s worst friend - no empathy, sympathy or sense. Always putting feet in mouth. Revels in making situations worse. Why have an enemy when you have dense, indiscreet Chan Mi by your side?

In Sung - world’s worst employee, manager -blabbermouth, easily swayed, no sense. Why have a skilled, able worker when you can have inept, clueless In Sung by your side?

Two things about YA’s maliciousness - 1) hopefully, once she’s found out, the coterie around SS will take careful steps to protect her and her fledgling career, 2) it’s bound to blow up in her face, because she’s not just messing with SS, but with Gabi, Gabi’s employees, the director, the actors and everyone involved in the film. Why the episdes are so short ? :p they last only 15min xD
Despite the angst the yelling the nagging the annoying voice the annoying B , I'll not drop it !

How can i drop it when JJS is such a cutie dork amazing earnest thing , how come that every time he is on screen it doesn't feel like he is acting , seriously he is killing me !

Where did they hide him for so long !!!
( i'm soo loonking forward to the face reader in which he seems to get the" playboy " role and The King's Wrath a cold blood assassin .. ehh we will see how does his natural acting work there)

The restaurant scene when he was on verge of crying , when SS said she is a fan now and she'll always be ( i understood it like that , i don't care if it's wrong i like how i understood it :p) how does he go throught "shocked dissapointed sad depressed to surprised she's mocking me pleased happy and in love" in just 1 min and it's all written on his face and eyes ..

And i finally understood why JH is so protective of SS ( even before he began to like her) , his family was always looking down on him and stepping on him and his dream , and SS is like that , when he said to her that looking at her he see his old self i didn't get it , but when i saw how his sister reacted to his album .. i got it !!

Then again that restaurant scene , IU/SS was so darn cute and I just felt that on that moment JH feel in love with her all over again.

Back to that hug ehh one of the most unawkward hug if not the most unawkward hug in K-drama land.

When JH/JJS was about to pinch her cheek i thing JJS realised in his head " ahh it's IU the fan will kill if i do more , let's not do this " but he should have ** kyaaa i'm fangirling about him **

At the end of episode 35 when she asked the assistant about JH and why he's not here , I was like soo you do realise when he's not around haa , you feel unconfortable when not here haaa !!

And with tha video call when she finally said ' i feel nerverous when you're not around ' i was like finally your head and heart are trying to connect

In the park i liked the fact that this time when JH asked her what's wrong she didn't say " i'm fine" she aswered and talked about how she felt * they should have drank together 10 episodes earlier*

The teasing about the height it cannot be a script scene at least the get up and sit down ..because of how they laugh it can not be a scripted scene !

I seriously feel sorry for IU , she is only 20 and by the end of the drama she would have spent 8 months with JJS, and he seems the funny loveable adorable kind of guy that you love him more each time you see him , and we get the feeling through their scene that they're very conforatble with each other , and she is at that age when you get attached easily ..she'll feel depressed for a periode of time because she'll not see him regulary * I know i'll really miss him if does not do an other drama in the 3/4 months after YTBLSS*

My fangirling end here :p

I think it has something to do with the look they give, there's a certain level of love that you cannot fake. But im starting to question my belief because of jjs!he is that good of an actor! That makes it sadder, coz despite a few exemptions w/in the korean entertainment industry (I researched!lol), dating someone with that much age gap with you is still considered taboo there. So, unless they plan to get married, don't even think about dating someone that young, and especially not the nation's younger sister! It's sadder coz us shippers can't even hope for them to be together even for just a short while. I even feel a bit guilty just considering the idea! Lol

Required fields are marked *

In the drama i don't feel that age gap at all ..but i don't know why .. i really don't see a kiss scene happening between them.. so i can't go ' they should date' after drama syndrome

first of all i really don't see JH initiating it ( in a way in their relation ship i see SS as the most " agressive" , she yell at him she snob him she say no to him she tease him , in a way she is her better self when around him, she not a push over when she is with him , JH is just here salking her in a cute way ' puppy JH' , in my head i really see SS jumbing at him , but it's never gonna happen bcause she is IU and it's a korean drama :3) so we will not have a kiss scene , we will have a forhead/cheek scene !

second i don't know i just feel weird about it and it's not the age gap , cause in american movie/serie i've a pair with bigger age gap...
When the taro man said is he your Orabony? yes in the way it has been written so far he just feel like that older brother..they have 14 episode to change that

Tssk i always end up talking a bit too much ...

it's a korean movie called" green fish" , Han Suk-kyu in one of his first major roles. when his character was stabbed to death, his eyes and the hollow sound he made when he's trying to breath but failed..OMG i'll never forget that.

I also discovered JJS from king2heart. TBH i don't care for ESK 's character...but JJS is a rare gem in K-drama I thought I'd better savor his acting before K-movie got him forever LOL. I'm seriously fangirling about him too..

sigh. I feel bad for her too..

but even if she had a huge crush on him and got her hearts broken it's good for her future acting job! ha

Honestly the whole MR +Dr Shin tangent just seems...irrelevant? Like the writer toyed with the idea of going there and then decides we don't hate the woman enough.

I prefer this to the makjang version true but still- I think we have enough shitty plot lines on the plate really...

It's just a vehicle to cause angst, the whole couple might become siblings-in-law thing. It's honestly going to go nowhere.

IMO in all the korean family dramas , the most cray-cray families would love each other and find happiness in the end.

the shin family is far from normal.. i guess mama shin will confront her hubby, ask for a divorce, papa shin will find out MR's true color & learnt to love& respect his wife, and the brat IJ will finally grow up.

Haha yea they always try to bring around the crazy bipolar families but they're so crazy by the end that I can't even see it as believable. I don't even care to watch the Shin family's storyline.
I just want JH separate from that place!

I think the writer is going there for two reasons: 1) the actors have amazing chemistry, so something has to be done with it, so why not an affair? and 2) for the angst of "Are we brother and sister?" for SS and JH.

Annoying, of course, I could really care less about the two characters, but I can deal with a handful of episodes (like 2) of the second reason.

Finally a proper hug scene which does not involve the female lead being wide eyed, slaw jawed, and arms limpy hanging by the sides, and not a 360 degree shot at that. Very well done. So cute I'm dying from the cute.

Have not fangirled over an OTP since Kim Min Jong-Yoon Jin Yi so forgive me. :X

Hi, this, "Have not fangirled over an OTP since Kim Min Jong-Yoon Jin Yi so forgive me," I totally understand. I did a dance (and I squeed) when they finally hugged in the parking lot of the airport. I am glad to know I was not the only one who got so excited at finally seeing them together.

At this point I'm ignoring the bad bits and rewriting them in my head in one cosmic *does not exist, but I'll make it fit* moment. And then using the recaps to skim for the parts I like.

TT I usually don't do this, but this show is so bipolar in the cute v. sucky, I kinda feel forced towards it. (No insult meant towards anyone who is bipolar, BTW, because I know the low points in this show are worse than the low points in being bipolar.)

I honestly don't have much to add this week. I watched part of ep 35 and all of ep 36 raw and in the background except the cute bits. I caught the Hye-shin getting a backbone moment which was nice. Totally don't care about Chan Woo and Yoon Shin-at least they have each other vs Chicken Ajhumma.

FINALLY the light bulb goes on in SS's head and all I can think is boy you are either super slow or this writer sucks...oh wait.

They were cute though as usual. Jun Ho's super jump onto his bed had me cracking up bec that's like the epitome of his dorky-ness. That's not even mentioning my face-palm when he takes her to a tarot reader. Ha. Cute hug though.

Everything else is just meh. YA and MR should both drive off a cliff. They can add JH's dad in the back seat. Maybe HS's MIL in the trunk. Everyone else is annoying but inconsequential.

This show so went from being my stress relief to being the reason for my stress...

this show is so freakin predictable that it's ridiculous. It's like they took all the most cliche themes from drama history and just stuffed it into one drama...but then...it's still so FRUSTRATINGLY ANNOYING. Especially Yeon Hwa and Mi Ryung. Seriously, they were meant to be mom and daughter. I really thought that this drama would make Mi Ryung...you know, that typical drama character who goes from immature and evil to mature and understanding..BUT NO. I'm guessing it's going to happen, but it's taking way too long. -_____-

In reality, this drama could have already ended, but it just seems like the writer's dragging things out by adding obstacle after obstacle with the same story over and over again.

Plus the side stories are so pointless and there's really no tying story to bring everything together right now so it's like I'm watching 6 different dramas in one... which makes it feel even more dragged out.

It's getting so annoying now, and the only reason I'm still watching is because the main couple is so.damn.adorable. :.sigh.:

-end of rant-

The stupid, it burns. So before I watched I thought about what the plot set up that we will never see, the hidden drama.

First, read wikipediamor another wiki on the show. It is supposedly a THREE TYPES OF MODERN WOMEN drama. Anyone get that after 36 episodes? Or, did they pick up it was a four screeching menopausal women drama? Yes yes.

But go with the three women plot. Eldest, the most man needing woman in a current drama, getting by on looks and nice, needs a spine. Finds herself a classic self pitying Korean man. Needs a spine and a personality. Sow actually reached big plot point, but so hidden and ruined by making eldest sister so spineless, need and personality free, doesn't ven register with audience over screaming menopause.

Second sis, wants to be eldest son, including livng with her mom, should be hilarious. Like Castanza in Seinfeld, she is completely stubborn and what she wants is not so much the oh, but the whole package, including the mother in law. With a whole gender/sexuality thing going on, which i could do without but it gives more material, and a real life actress who fits the role. The screeching killed the plot. The mutual contract barely touched the theme. Terrible directing, lousy writing. What a waste of good actors and a set up.

Third sis and lead, becoming professional and completing new into one of those even after death boy girl relationships that set Kdrama apart and what the audience takes abuse to see. Blah. About 90 seconds, just enough love heroin for the audience to watch a few minutes.

Then I watched the evil unfold. So what did writer and director give us?

Major conflict. Master manipulator deletes family dinner info from cell phone. First, most likely third daughter would take phone. Second, master manipulator would not do because will get caught. This is not master manipulator, it is retard screeching at strangers on the street. Third, assumes NO communication between about ten different people. Fourth, good mom knows crazy mom is crazy and evil, was TOLD she was set up (cold medicine, come now, look, no cold) and knows the daughter she raise for 20 years would not blow her off, and knows SHE NEVER HEARD BACK on her own plans. So, NO CONFLICT FOR HUMANS.

Second conflict. For no reason (hmmm, what is the lazy screen writer going to do) worthless assistant is given charge of third sister, who he has always undermined. So, this makes hero a moron incapable of being successful in the career that our script writer god says the hero mastered. Assistant can't even get to first day of shooting on time? With no repercussions? Then, doesn't know and verify schedule? And third sister doesn't know and verify? Not on this planet.

Here is what I am wondering as a newcomer who likes the multigenerational arcs and the intense and convincing even without touch relationships of kdramas, why do most of you tolerate and make excuses do such evil and inept writing and directing? Clearly the writer has contempt for the characters she created and for the audience she mocks with plot devices that, from how to show to show wnd en within shows, replace the character of the characters she wrote with new characters.

Notice how the fictional director and writer were above nepotism in the dumb party scene? Way to stroke yorsces guys. Too bad you are to lazy or incompetent to come up with a conflict that makes sense in the human world or find the humor in your own set ups. All you have going for you are some actors with charm and two or three scenes a show where the dialog doesn't much matter.

In "I Hate Luv Stories"at the end, for the plot conflicts, the actors just say "blah blah blah", "blah blah blah." If Kdrama started doing this it could save a lot of suffering, eliminate the need for subbing, and save writers and producers from the evil hate they have for their audience and their characters.

The good thing about this drama is, I'm learning much more Korean than usual. This is basically what keeps me through those boring, aggravating, tearing my hair out part.(Any part where an ajummha involved)

I try to analyze what they are saying and figure out the corresponding words in English. During the cuteness, I just get caught up in the moment (which I love) and completely forget about what they're saying and end up depending on the subtitles.

The subject matter is so boring that I end up focusing more on the words and trying to understand, what for example, Chicken Ajummha is saying rather than what she means.

Otherwise. I would definitely be fast-forwarding, a lot.

On a completely different topic, I think JH actually realized he liked SS really early on. Before the 20th episode. MR said something about him caring too much, or YH. Anyways, I distinctly remember something about him realizing that he likes SS. Plus wasn't there the whole “How can you be so oblivious to someone’s feelings? " 'I… you… I… don’t know what to do about you, that’s what!' ” from a recent weecap?

Maybe I'm just missing something.

I agree that JH already knows he's in love with SS but in another thread that I was reading a number of them wanted a Eureka moment from him like for SS.

I also agree that JJS is a good actor and the saving grace of this otherwise plodding show. It is definitely due to his stage experience. In hollywood, established film actors do stage work even though the pay is not good because of the prestige and the experience. In England, almost all of the famous actors started on stage eg Laurence Olivier, Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, etc.

I agree that JJS is the saving grace of this show. I also agree that it must be due to his stage experience. He's a phenomenal actor, on par with all those actors you mentioned. Maybe. I love his expressions. He emotes far better than anyone else on this show. One look on his face, and you can totally get what he's feeling at that moment. I really think the rest of the cast could stand to take a lesson or two or a hundred from JJS. He's wonderful.

Yeon-ah's a bitch. YES! A BIG YES! >:D
Her schemes actually sucks but it makes me hate her literally. Ugh. Like, "Here goes that crazy witch again." I yell over my computer screen everytime she'll show up, 'cause I know she's always up to something dirty.

Anyways, the good part with these episodes are the SS and JH moments. I must say there's a big progress here. When SS finally started to stop being clueless about JH's OBVIOUS acts. Thank God! That moment of realization finally struck her senses.

All in all, I like it so much. Although I haven't watched the english subbed episode yet(Just RAW), I was able to comprehend a bit because of this review/open thread. Thanks! :)

Okay, I've only watched ep 35 so far but SERIOUSLY, has no one in this drama heard of confirming things with the other party before? I can understand why everyone can get angry with Soon-shin's no-show if Mi-ryung had texted back pretending to be Soon-shin, saying that she'll be there. She didn't. She just deleted the text message. Why did the whole family just assume that she would be there when she never responded? Isn't it natural to make sure the other people got the message/is free? The party is tomorrow, why can't they just call her back again the next day and be like, "Soon-shin ah, you got the text message right? Are you too busy?". Isn't it only natural to confirm these things instead of planning a party no one ever agreed to show up at?

That would be what NORMAL people would do, but nobody in this drama is normal. I wish the writer would add that spark of common sense to, oh, EVERYBODY in this show, but I don't see it happening. Now or ever. Actually, the only person in this show who has any real sense is Joon-ho. And Young-hoon and maybe Soo-shin. These three are the most normal characters in the whole show. Normal, that is, for dramaland.

Actually if you recall, Jeong Ae LIED to her family in the first place by saying that Soon Shin replied back saying that she was too busy. Because her family believed her, they thought Soon Shin was lying. So it's also Jeong Ae's fault for making her family think that. In the end, she should have just told them the truth about how Soon Shin never replied back instead of saying "oh she can't make it because she's busy."

All I can say is, I'm glad Soon-shin and Joon-ho spend so much time together. I'm glad she's starting to realize her feelings. It's taken her long enough.

The rest, I don't give one flying fig about. I could take it or leave it. Especially Mi-ryung and Yeon-ah, I could do without. Why must they be so freaking petty all the time? I hate them. I fast forward most of their scenes, because I just can't stand them. AT ALL!

The same goes for Chicken Ahjumma, and Joon-ho's family. All of them are annoying and aggravating. Just hearing their voices is enough to grate on my nerves.

Anyway, what Mi-ryung pulled in these episodes, was so frigging petty and low, and really a bitchy move. I can't believe she would stoop so low, but then again, I can. I mean, this is Mi-ryung we're talking about. I just can't stand her. I wish she would listen to Manager Hwang for once and just let all of this go and move on with her life. But the lady has such a sense of entitlement, and she thinks she's in the right all the time, I don't see that happening. I just really want her to have an affair with Dr. Shin, as annoying as that is, and get caught. Then her life will be ruined and she'll stop trying to run Soon-shin's. Is that too harsh? I don't think so, she deserves it. Because Karma is the ultimate bitch.

I also want to know who Soon-shin's father is! For that and SS and JH, are the reasons why I'm still watching. The rest of the show can go to hell.

Thanks for the weecap, JB!

Just really really maddening!!! Song mi ryeong and yeon ah are so alike in their jealousies and their lying ways.

For the life of me i still dont undersatnd why lee soon shin is living with song mi ryeong? Why?? What is that meant to do?

um did you even pay attention to what was said in episode 35 when Mi Ryeong barged into Soon Shin's room and demanded to know why she didn't tell her she passed the audition and why she continued to live there if she was going to be spiteful? Or episode 33 or 34 when Soon Shin clearly said it herself towards the end of the episode? She said she's only living there because Mi Ryeong gave her no choice to. After all, Mi Ryeong had already "taken" her family away from her by saying she wasn't related to them (which shouldn't matter in the first place but apparently in Kdramas it does) and she couldn't exactly go home because she didn't want to cause further stress on them now that word's out that she's Mi Ryeong's biological daughter.

I know thats what she said but i dont understand why whe feels that way! That she has no choice. She is allowing herself to be manipulated. And its getting hard to believe how one is trying to protect the other ( she and the mom, not mi ryeong) to the point they dont tell the other anything and allows that evil person to do as she wishes.

And soon shin knew that the family didnt want the father ot have been a cheater, she should have told them the truth. They already accepted her as family when they took her in all those years ago at a time when they thought there was no blood connection. S niw, there is no blood connection, she thinks they wont view her as family? I dont get it.

Prediction: Yeoanh is blackmaling Miryung into helping her seperate Junho and soonshin. Miryung will lie to soonshin telling her that her real father is Junho's father. The two will seperate, Soonshin will suffer, Miryung will finally do the right thing because now she really cares for Soonshin. She will tell the truth, expose Yeonah for the bitch she is. She will lose her career and reputation but she will gain Soonshin. What do you think of my future telling skills? ;-). I was away from this drama for a while so I watched 8 episodes over a two day period. Simply because surely the mom, sister, etc could have just pick the modern smartphone and call, SMS, Kakaotalk, Skype, LINE, call again, MMS.
