Time-slip drama Mi-rae’s Choice confirms leads

Upcoming KBS time-slip drama Mi-rae’s Choice (or Future Choice, since the heroine’s name means “future,” of course) has finally secured its cast. Yoon Eun-hye (I Miss You) has signed on to play the time-traveling heroine, Lee Dong-gun (Smile Again, Lovers in Paris) will be making his army comeback in his first drama in five years, and Jung Yong-hwa (You’ve Fallen For Me) gives him a run for his money as the other leg of the love triangle.

The new fall Monday-Tuesday drama comes from writer Hong Jin-ah of The King 2 Hearts and Beethoven Virus, and the PD of Crime Squad and Bad Love. It’ll be set in the world of television broadcasting, and stars Yoon Eun-hye as a writer (named Na Mi-rae) who travels back in time to meet her past self on purpose to set about on a different course in life. Where’s the Bad Idea Fairy when you need her?

Rift in space-time continuum notwithstanding, I do like the idea of Yoon Eun-hye playing two totally different versions of a character, which will be as much fun as you can have without being in a makjang where you play your own evil twin. The character is described as a bright and lovable type who spends her days chanting to herself, “I’m okay!” She works as a desk drone at a large company’s call center and just kind of scrapes by in life. But one day her future self appears in front of her and starts her down a path to pursue the things she really wanted in life. It’s painted as an uplifting success story, so I’m thinking there will be minimum supernatural mythology — just enough to get the gimmick going.

This will be Lee Dong-gun’s first drama since 2008’s When Night Comes, and he’ll be playing the broadcaster’s lead announcer, a man who can be prickly, but is also a highly principled and upright. Jung Yong-hwa plays a VJ who went to film school in the States. But he’s also got a double life, because he’s actually the grandson of the broadcast network’s CEO, and is basically pulling an undercover boss move by playing a lowly cameraman when he’s set to inherit the entire station. He’s described as a smooth operator who dreams of building a media conglomerate that does everything from film to TV.

On paper the setup sounds an awful lot like Nine, but I think we can expect a more heroine-centric success story that happens to use time travel, rather than a story that hinges on it. The writer is one in the plus column for me, and well, any day that Yoon Eun-hye signs up for a drama that doesn’t make me want to spork my eyes out is a good day indeed.

Mi-rae’s Choice follows Good Doctor and airs in October on KBS.

The writer is definitely a plus. I have a love/loathe relationship with Yoon Eun-hye's drama choices. I love her but I have to see the October line-up to see if this drama is a must-watch for me though.

Same here. She's had some huge head scratchers. She used to be one of those actresses for me that I would check out a drama just for her, but not so much any more. Regardless, I always wish her the best in her projects.

I heard that Yoon Eun Hye chose her recent dramas out of obligations (Minus I Miss You) to the directors. I give her mercy for being nice. I don't give her mercy for not recognizing when the bail for your own career and safety.

Given she's paid all her debts, I'm going to risk her choice this time, though I'm still secretly disappointed at her choice of a non-SBS series. (Running Man) and that her lead isn't Lee MinKi.

I can dream, can't I?

And why are these leading men always prickly? We need a happy-go-lucky, compulsive hugger!

Story aside, I like the pairing of Lee Dong-gun and Yoon Eun-hye. I keep hoping for a really good drama for YEH. She hasn't had one since Coffee Prince. Much like Moon Geun Young, both their talent is wasted because the dramas they pick are not that good. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this one.

"Goong" really wasnt that good (acting or writing-wise).

Only real good drama YEH has done is "Coffee Prince" and not surprisingly, that was the one where she gave her best performance.

As for MGY, she seems to have had better luck w/ her film projects.

Didn't see much romcom in "Goong" - at least anything resembling real humor.

Otoh, CP had numerous great lines/comic moments.

Yay Yoon Eun Hye is coming back with a new drama and it's been less than a year! It seems that she's playing an upbeat character this time and it's always good to see her in these kind of roles :)

I hope that Lee Dong Gun is the main lead here...

I know that him and YEH will have great chemistry since they already worked together once on a song collaboration for her Zipel CF and the MV that they released was really cute ^^

Jung Yong-Hwa and Yoon Eun-Hye has got to be one of the most attractive but orthodontically challenged pairings in K-dramaland. Away from the shallow side, though, this sounds like it has potential. Not sure if I'll watch -have to wait and see what others think first after a few episodes.

I got high hopes for this one.. I miss YEH nowadays (sorry but i pass up on I Miss You, am not gonna watch sappy dramas anytime soon) that makes me wanna start marathoning CP. So happy my download is complete!

I agree with this, she might not be the best actress out there but she is charming. Lie to me was my first Kdrama so I will always have a soft spot for her in my heart. That and the fact that both Gong & CP are in my list of top 10 dramas. I have nothing but good wishes for her.

Required fields are marked *

I don't think YEH is overrated for her acting since she has received much criticism for it over the years.

Now, whether she warrants her popularity - that's another question, but her star started to rise during her X-Man years (seems like even more so than during her Baby-Vox days) and was cemented by "Goong" and "Coffee Prince" (being a lead in 2 hugely popular dramas will do that for ya).

I am not that excited about the story, but I am so looking forward to seeing him back on screen that I will try to watch even though I have banned myself from watching dramas during the semester (which starts on Sept 3).

I really want this to be good for everyone involved. YEH needs it because people seem to be doubting her choices. LDG needs it because it is his army come back project. JYH needs it to have a chance to prove to people that can carry a role in a real grown up show. KBS needs it because it will be going up against Ha Ji Won in a saeguk. I need it because I like the idea of a female writer with a female PD.

Does this remind anyone of the movie Project Makeover?

[From Wikipedia]

Project Makeover (Hangul: 언니가 간다; RR: Eonni-ga Ganda; also known as Operation Makeover or Go Go Sister) is a 2007 South Korean film. In an online poll conducted by web portal Daum, Korean netizens named Project Makeover as the worst film of 2007.

Plot:
Na Jung-ju is a 30 year-old woman whose life is going nowhere, and she blames her misery on a failed high school romance with Jo Ha-ni, who has since become a famous singer. Her old schoolfriend Oh Tae-hun, who used to have a big crush on her, is now a successful and wealthy businessman, and she regrets not having gone out with him. After being given the chance to travel back in time, Jung-ju goes back to 1994 where she tries to convince her younger self to date the future businessman.

I totally agree. There have been so many mediocre dramas. No one wants to see the same tired formula anymore. If this is going to be just another melodrama people will pass on it and go straight to the competition. It's definitely high on my list because I love the leads, but it's going to have stiff competition from Choi Ji Woo in the remake of "Kaseifu no Mita" unless "The Good Doctor" has ratings so high it keeps people from watching that show. Don't think the remake of "Kaseifu no Mita" will be anywhere near as bold as the original, but it will definitely be different as far as K-dramas go and that alone could be good enough to create a buzz that makes people jump networks when "The Good Doctor" ends . And then there's Ha Ji Won's drama. "Future Choice" has a great lead in with "The Good Doctor" but the writer is really going to have to hook people BIG TIME so they don't jump ship.

Required fields are marked *

Yes, because obviously the only reason anybody could dislike someone's acting is they're a hater or a bitch. Not because they have an actual unbiased opinion based on what they've seen of the person's acting.

For the record, I like YEH a lot, and I think she has a lot of charisma and talent. But calling someone who feels differently names is not only childish and rude, it's pointless on a site like this. You can't have any sort of discussion if your response is going to be, "What, you don't like my idol/bias? Hater! Bitch!" If you want to spread Korean culture (isn't that the cornerstone of Hallyu?), it's probably best to engage people with opposing viewpoints, not offend them, no?

Also, the idea that having many fans translates to actual talent is really dubious. I'm not one of those snobs who deride everything popular on principle, but I also think there were many movements/people/etc with many fans who were very overhyped.

I don't think think so, sometimes i don't like somebody acting but i'm not hate him/her, i just couldn't feel their emotion when they act but sometimes i still watch their drama if the story is good n the other cast is good so they could cover the weak acting

For yoon Eun Hye she's not the best actress but she's not bad too, Actually I miss her in good drama, I like Goong n My fair lady , Lie to me is interesting in the beginning but few end episode is predictable n kind of boring

This plot sounds so meh to me, which is surprising since the world of K2H was so colorful. Then again, the promotional stills/teasers weren't all that great for K2H either. But then it aired and i fell in love by the end of episode 1. Also, the director played a huuge part in all that.
I'm just going to hope that that would be the case with this show too, even if the director will be the one to make it or break it. (I looked up the PD and she's a woman! Why are they so rare in k-dramaland?)
I like the cast and i like the writer. Those are enough reasons to check out this show.

Sigh....

Seems like a nice concept but I bet I can tell you what the story is going to turn out like in the end.

Young Mirae (call her YM to avoid confusion) is going to be liking the lead announcer and may even get to be with him in the future. Later on she will discover that the grandson liked her as well and was in truth an undercover boss. So now to get a better life she who has now become Future Mirae (now known as FM) will regret her decision for ignoring him etc and not getting the good life. So she will go in the past so that her YM will get to notice and like grandson, and tips on how to attract him.

Why can one not see the disaster before it actually happens :( if the guy ever finds out about this he will feel betrayed biig time. :) Plus not to mention that messing with time always seems to get back to you at some point. So even if you have the good life for the moment in the end KABOOM !!!!!

Lets see if I am proven wrong this time though.

I will watch this simply because of Yonghwa, plus I miss Lee Dong-gun! I just hope Yong-hwa's character is close to his character for he is fantastic in Running Man. Wonder what Eun-hye's kissing scenes will be. yay!
