Oh Jung-se as average single dad by day, action hero by night

This movie looks adorably feel-good. It’s sort of like Kick-Ass the bumbling ajusshi version — Oh Jung-se (Men: An Operating Manual) stars in this family comedy as a struggling single dad who dons a superhero costume to raise his sick son’s spirits when his favorite TV superhero goes off the air. Low-rent hijinks ensue. The title is, appropriately, The Hero.

Oh Jung-se stars as a stuntman on a children’s television show, whose face is never shown because he’s just the guy behind the mask doing the wire stunts and taking the blows. His character is an obvious Iron Man ripoff named Thunderman, who happens to be his son’s favorite TV superhero. But the show’s ratings are flagging and it eventually gets cancelled, leaving Dad at the end of his rope. He’s barely making ends meet, and Thunderman was his only steady paycheck.

Even more devastated is his sick son, played by Jung Yoon-seok (R2B: Return to Base, Miracle of Love), who worships Thunderman. The fanboy is so heartbroken that he stops eating, so Dad decides he has to do something drastic, and puts on the costume to make the boy believe that Thunderman is real. He enlists the help of his friends from the set of the axed children’s show (Park Chul-min, Jung Eun-pyo, Shin Ji-soo) to help sell the illusion that he’s a real hero fighting crime and protecting humanity.

Judging from the stills, this does not go according to plan. (Perhaps he inadvertently saves the world? While getting his face bashed in?) But still, best dad ever.

The Hero premieres in theaters October 8.

This guy stole every scene he was in during the run of I Miss You - my first time seeing him. Then I watched How to Use Men with Tips. Again, every scene he's in. He's fabulous!

JoAnne,

EXACTLY!! I squealed to see him mentioned in this because I LOVED his offbeat quirkiness in I Miss You. Even his walking and turning corners was quirky and his bromance with he lead was hilarious and touching. :)

This is on my radar. After 'How to Use Guys with Secret Tips' and realizing I've seen Oh Jung Sae many times before, I will be paying attention. Fun actor and the movie sounds precious. I am hoping for a sweet and warm human drama, with some nice laughs in it. I just hope it does not fall into the trap of melo and oversimplifying grief and the guy's efforts. This has so much potential, so fingers crossed.

D'awhh, this looks cute!
I like it's quite a lowfi concept - looking forward to it.
I saw Oh Jung Se on that Lee Seon Kyun variety pilot show based on that walk with friends film Ha Jung Woo did. He was awesome in that. Actually the entire show was brilliant. I thought Lee Seon Kyun did a great job with who he called on. But it wasn't like awkward either, cos that show breathed sincerity. Loved it.
I admit.. I haven't actually seen a lot of Oh Jung Se - but I'll be sure to get onto it when I can.

Secret Tips is shaping up to be my favourite film of 2013 it was incredible and seemed to fly under everyone's radar. People might set it aside bc it just seems like an easy rom com, but it was so tongue in cheek, downright hilarious, and was quite a punch into the society we live in today (esp in terms of gender inequality and the use of media). And the acting, wow. Everyone was fantastic but Oh Jung Se blew me away. This is rly just a long tldr to say I am totally tuning into this movie and I'm so glad he's getting leading roles now.

Aaaaaw, I love Oh Jung-Sae. He's fabulous in How to Use Men with Tips. I watch it by accident, never thought that I'll fall in love with it so hard I just want to promote it to everyone I know.

And Oh Jung-Sae, maaaaan! I never watch him in anything but his acting is awesomely sincere, just because of him in this, it's make me want to watch it.
