JTBC attracts star lineup for Mom Needs a Man

How’s that for an eye-catching title: Mom Needs a Man, a drama adapted from a novel that’s in the works for JTBC. It’s managed to attract a number of high-profile names to its potential cast list, which is reason enough to keep an eye out for it. Mom and daughter roles will be played by Choi Jung-yoon (Ojakkyo Brothers) and Jin Ji-hee (Goddess of Fire Jung-yi), while actors currently considering the project include Eugene (Hundred Year Inheritance), Uhm Tae-woong (Sword and Flower), and Kim Sung-soo (My Love Madame Butterfly).

Choi Jung-yoon will play a housewife who pragmatically chooses a realistic marriage instead of her first love and settles down at a young age. Now she’s a housewife with a difficult middle schooler for a daughter (Jin Ji-hee), who rebels and swears and is a general handful. Choi is fenced in by the strict expectations of her husband and mother-in-law and expected to only focus on running the household, though she’s got plenty of personality when she’s out with her friends and able to be her boisterous self.

A trio of friends will form the center of the show, though the role Eugene is considering sounds like the main lead. The women are all in their late 30s and in a different situation of life, with Eugene’s role being a single mom character. The third friend is an “old miss” character (i.e., spinster), to be played by 36-year-old Jin Jae-young (My Sweet Seoul), though being a “gold miss” makes her single and proud, rather than sad and lonely-hearted.

On the men’s side, Kim Sung-soo’s potential role would be a film company CEO, which is right up his alley and a character he’s played before. Uhmforce would play a film director who’s won awards at Cannes, and also happens to be a geeeeeenius director. Of course he is.

With the PD of The Woman Who Wants To Marry (the original, not to be confused with the sequel, The Woman Who Still Wants To Marry) and Could We Marry at the helm, I’m thinking Mom Needs a Man will have a deft hand with the marriage motif. And I’m always in the market for another drama that can explore friendship and relationships with the same heartwarming touch as the Woman Who Wants To Marry series.

Mom Needs a Man will take over the Monday-Tuesday timeslot from Your Neighbor’s Wife and premieres in December.

Sounds interesting, didn't know the woman who still wants to marry was a sequel!

I'd say that "The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry" was more of a remake of the theme, revisiting the same topic, than a sequel to "The Woman Who Wants to Marry." There are many similar "beats" to the stories, much the way there are different stories and characters to "Answer Me 1997" and "Answer Me 1994."

I would think more optimistically of the upcoming drama if it was the latter "Marry" drama that was the prior work and not the former as there were a few distasteful plot points in the original "Marry" that were hard to stomach. You never can be fully sure how much influence the PD will have over the writing and how the story is portrayed.

I like the sound of this. It does help that Uhm Tae-woong is considering the drama as well :)

I loved The Woman Who wants to Marry! I think these '3 women sisterhood' in K-dramas are gold (if done right!). I am not saying bromance is overrated (Definitely NOT!), but it's heartwarming to see a trio of ladies looking out for each other and talking about their mundane lives.

I think bromance is overrated, tbh. I'd much prefer to watch positive female friendships, but unfortunately women always seem to be fighting over men in dramas and even if they're not, female friendship never seems to be written in as much depth as ~bromance~. There are a few exceptions, of course, but it's definitely something I wish we could get more of.

I find it so interesting that I see examples of "sisterhood", or long-term friendships in so many T and J-dramas... but in K-dramas, the rule of thumb seems to be that the lead heroine is someone that is happy despite the lonely hardships in her life. :/

really? There is a stereotype in the K entertainment world that the heroine always has that friend who is ready to drop everything and be there for the main, who seems to live for the main's next phone call, always on standby. Of course the friendship lacks depth, but it's there.

Bring it on. I hope the actors will take this project. I kinda like jtbc dramas although it's rare to see it air in my country.

Not holding my breath for realistic plot lines or characterization... my biggest pet peeve with these sorts of dramas is the way male characters are written as either bats from hell or Prince Charming. Kind of makes you see how emotionally rich and true to life dramas like Alone in Love are.

Alone in Love is one the best dramas I've ever seen. It was brilliant.

This sounds like JTBC's answer to tvN's I Need Romance series. Sounds good!! Potential cast is great as well.

the character description of Uhmforce remind me of the recent 2D1N episode where Taewoong is the director who cant seem to make up his mind about the concept of the video xD

It was really funny how he wanted to film every little thing he saw and Cha Tae Hyun, the cinematographer, said that he didn't have a concept in mind so that was why he kept filming everything.

I actually think he had a concept in mind but he saw everything was interesting so he just filmed ever, lol. Thankfully their team won.

Jin Ji-hee's character reminds me of her portrayal as Gong Hyo-jin's daughter in Aging Family. The title is probably one of her 'polite comment' pointed towards her mother, considering how she's a rebellious and curse-spewing girl. Haha

Hope this will be a decent drama and manage to portray friendship between women in a fun setting, instead of them chasing the same men and quarelling with each other. Dramaland needs more of female friendship, though I'm not complaining on the abundance of bromance ;)

It's been I don't know how many years, and Eugene's acting skills remain mediocre. Hopefully it's Choi's drama to carry.

I'm confused - from the description it sounds like the mother-daughter pair's mother (Choi) is still married, but the series web page describes her as one of three unmarried women, who also has a rebellious daughter?

I think there is some mistake here. If the daughter's mom is married the title does not make sens.

OMG Kim Sung-Soo where art thou?? Man, I had major withdrawal after Bad Love. He is just sooooooo fine! Move over flower boys...

Well this whole cast looks the part, hoping they all sign up. And yeah, I second the need for more sisterhood. These days the main female lead has barely any (female) friends, let alone a best-friend.

That's the thing about the whole "flower boy" connotation - KSS is way more good-looking ("pretty" if you will) than all the so-called flower-boys - such as the JGS who is proclaimed a "pretty man" in a drama when he is neither.

Anyhow, this cast could be really good - but I'll give it just a try for Jin Ji-hee.

heart breaks!!! TTT______TTTT

Now where else can i watch him stutter, being his dorky doggyfeet himself, talks lovingly bout his baby and shows up wifey's food? add all those with his dry jokes, weird comments, and his not-really-want- to-win-games-i'll-just-take-a-nap-or-hang-around variety sense. I die.

No Uhmforce in 1n2d anymore, not gonna watch the show again. Hiks, and i love it like my baby ......

I'm very sad that Uhm Force has left 1N2D... if he never did this no one would have thought he's so dorky in reality. I will really miss his presence and his dry jokes.

If you think about who's more popular and a better actor and who would carry the drama better, it has to be Uhm Force.

if it's about acting , i think they are equal but about rating UTW have better luck n he has more chance to be the first lead n Kim Sung Soo mostly become the second lead from more popular actor actor but it's second lead that equal with the first lead n mostly his charracter more complicated than first lead
I don't really care about who the first lead as long as this drama has good story

Eugene and Kim Sungsoo looks alike with their grinning face.

Jin Ji-hee is growing to become a beautiful lady, quite different from her cute-chubby face, specifically during High Kick2, when she's being a naughty girl.

I will definitely watch this kdrama, coz i like all the cast =)

I'm confused. So, based on the description, isn't she already married...so already with a man? Or she needs her husband to be a man? What am I missing from he premise and the title?

I'm totally down for a female friendship oriented show.

But I think I'd like this better if it was titled, Woman gets: A Divorce from Life-Force sucking Spouse, her PhD, An Awesome Career, and then finds a Life Partner that Enhances her Life and Gives her Orgasms."
