Pretty Man: Episode 1

New kid on the block Pretty Man premiered today on KBS, and it was exactly as advertised—a nice dose of bubbly, cute fun. It’s a manhwa adaptation, so you have to go in with the expectation that wacky hijinks and broad characterizations are in store, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that they’re anchored with just enough realism to make them more than caricatures, and despite the glossy excess (and highly questionable life choices from our hero), there’s a fun mystery to solve, and some heart at the core.

EPISODE 1 RECAP

In a fancy high-rise apartment overlooking the city, a woman dressed to the nines paws hungrily at a man who looks rather bored by the proceedings. This is our titular pretty man DOKKO MATTEI (Jang Geun-seok).

As she unbuttons his shirt, she offers to buy Mattei a car, and he brings the date to a screeching halt. He sighs that she sees him as all the others do—as someone who’ll do anything to get nice things from women.

She hurriedly apologizes for the mistake, but he heads toward the door anyway, and in a last-ditch effort she blurts that she’ll buy him an apartment just like this one. Suddenly he whirls around and gives her a kiss that literally melts her knees, and struts out with a smile on his face. So… you ARE that guy, yeah?

In a very different house across town, KIM BO-TONG (IU), whose name literally means “average,” sits in her very average room in her very average house, making a new desktop wallpaper out of Mattei’s face.

Her little brother comes busting in wearing his taekwondo uniform and sighs at noona’s taste in guys, arguing that real men ought to have muscles. She asks if he could have the body of Kim Jong-gook or Kang Dong-won, which he would choose, and he says duh, Kim Jong-kook. Naturally she chooses Kang Dong-won.

And then Mom comes busting in to complain that she took a part-time job at a samgyupsal restaurant, when she could be working at Mom’s BBQ place. Bo-tongie points out that the other job pays, but there’s no winning the argument once Mom launches into a what-will-you-do-with-your-life rant.

She sighs that her twenty-six-year-old daughter has a college degree but is still working part-time jobs, and asks if she doesn’t have a dream in life. Bo-tongie insists she does, and writes in big letters: “Mattei’s Wife.” Oh good grief. I suddenly understand why Mom is so shouty.

She gets sent out to buy groceries, and that’s when we see that the family actually lives inside Mom’s BBQ restaurant, named Botong Galbi. Ha. Do you even get customers when you call your place Average Ribs?

At the market, Bo-tongie gets hilariously hot and bothered by everything from the butcher unbuttoning his collar to the row of chickens lying on the counter looking nekkid. She blushes, everything reminding her of her crush on Mattei.

At the bus stop, she smiles at the “Dokko Mattei is Mine” heart carved into the bench, and touches it up for old times’ sake. She flashes back to the fateful bus ride where she first saw Mattei ten years ago, in all his windblown, backlit, shampoo commercial glory.

She leaps up to hover over his seat on the nearly empty bus, and stares at an uncomfortably close distance. Later that day she’s already fantasizing about the mysterious pretty boy who came out of nowhere, when she gets called out to greet Mom’s friend and her son. And wouldn’t you know it—that son is Mattei.

Bo-tongie trips over herself to serve them, and Mattei declares that he’s a vegetarian but he’ll taste the meat just to be polite… and then proceeds to gnaw every last bite off the bones. Heh. Late at night, Bo-tongie steals into the kitchen to pack a giant tub of beef to take to Mattei now that she knows what he likes.

At their modest home, Mattei asks his mother why he still can’t go find his father. She reminds him that it isn’t time yet, and promises that when things are right, she’ll give him the secret password he’ll use to prove that he’s his father’s son. But there are these things now called DNA tests…

Mom goes inside to make him a snack, and that’s when he notices a submarine scope looming over his wall. Bo-tongie thinks she’s being stealthy, but he catches her spying on him, and she sheepishly says she brought over some meat to try and convince him of the merits of being a carnivore. He dismisses her in his casual, aloof way, but makes sure she leaves the tub of meat. Ha.

At school, she skips class just to get a glimpse of him, and she isn’t alone. All the girls in his class and even his teacher (cameo by Kim Seul-gi) linger to stare at the pretty.

They nearly faint when he takes a sip of water, and Bo-tongie declares that her new goal in life is to be that water. Ha.

The swig of water takes us back to the present, where Mattei takes in the view from his brand new apartment. His sugar mama girlfriend suggests beautiful furniture for the beautiful Mattei, and he asks if he’s really so pretty. She fawns that that’s like asking if the earth is round or if triangle kimbap is triangular. Pfft.

She sighs that all she has is money, and that she gets nervous every time a young beautiful woman walks by. Mattei assures her that those things all pass, but to him, money is what’s beautiful. Er. I guess the one upside is that he’s upfront about it, but that’s a really small upside.

She swoons to hear that that makes her beautiful in his eyes, and after he pulls her in for a kiss, she hands him the keys to his new car. He heads down to the garage to meet his new baby and tells the car it should be honored to have an owner like him, and then does a fistpump of joy to confirm that his key unlocks the car.

As he takes it for a spin, he gets a call from yet another woman who says she misses him, but it turns out to be Mom. He tells her that he got a new house for them to move into, and says that he’ll come for her soon. She sends him a few selcas to ask which one he likes best, and he chooses the one where she looks prettiest.

She seems depressed or ill or both, and tries to tell him something, but loses her nerve. She takes out a box of pills and starts to cry (Is she sick or thinking of suicide?) and someone comes knocking. It’s Bo-tongie here to deliver more meat, like she always does. Mattei’s mom asks her to take her somewhere tomorrow, and Bo-tongie agrees sweetly.

While on the phone with his mom, Mattei happens to lock eyes with the woman who pulls up next to him at a red light, and they clearly recognize each other. He chases her down the street which she seems to enjoy, and he loses her at the next light.

This is HONG YU-RA (Han Chae-young), whom he calls wistfully, “the woman who appears and then disappears the moment I might forget her.” He recalls the first time he saw her at a coffee shop when he first came up to Seoul. He had come to Cheongdam-dong, land of the rich and beautiful, and for the first time HE fell over himself at the sight of a beautiful woman.

She noticed him smiling at her, and had a tall glass of water sent to his table with the note: “Drink this and wake up.” Ha, so basically she’s the only woman who ever bruised your ego?

Back in the present, Mattei meets a friend and yells at him for thinking of working at a host bar, asking if he really wants to spend the rest of his life pouring drinks for women. The friend wonders if Mattei is really any different. That’s what I’m sayin’.

The next day Bo-tongie heads out with Mattei’s mom, and she asks if they’re going to meet a friend. Mom says it’s someone she wishes were a friend, because at least then she’d be able to stay by that person’s side.

She meets with a man she calls Chairman, who speaks to her fondly and asks how Mattei has grown up. I’m assuming this is his father, though neither says anything explicitly about the matter.

Bo-tongie spends the time gathering fallen leaves in the yard, and later presents them to Mattei’s mom as a bouquet. Mom marvels that what looks like trash to one person could be turned into something so pretty in her hands, and Bo-tongie blushes, insisting that Oppa is the pretty one.

She admits freely to Mom about liking Mattei, which she clearly has known for years. Bo-tongie thinks that she’s got a long way to go before reaching Mattei’s level, assuming that he’s wildly successful because he lives in Gangnam.

Mom looks at her fondly and asks if there ever comes a time when she’s not around, that Bo-tongie will stay by Mattei’s side and look after him. She gladly promises, though she wonders belatedly if Mom is planning to go somewhere. Mom deflects that she’s just talking in hypotheticals.

Mattei gets trotted out to a reunion dinner with his girlfriend and her friends, and swallows every golddigger insult that comes his way. He’s prepared with retorts and acts like it doesn’t bother him, but he clearly hates every second of it.

Meanwhile Bo-tongie gets it into her head that she’s doomed to inherit her mother’s figure, and for some reason decides that wrapping herself in saran wrap is the way to prevent that from happening. Her idiot brother actually helps her do it, but Mom suddenly runs out in a panic and tells them that Mattei’s mom collapsed.

Mattei leaves the party early and tells his girlfriend never to call him out for things like that again, and then runs into Yu-ra outside the hotel. This time he stops her to ask who she is and why she keeps appearing and catching his eye.

She pretends not to know what he’s talking about, but he realizes that she’s here for the reunion party he just left, which makes her his girlfriend’s classmate. He’s interrupted with a call from Mom’s phone, but it’s Bo-tongie on the other end.

She can barely get the words out through her tears, but says that his mom is in the hospital, sick with cancer all this time without telling anyone.

When Yu-ra overhears what’s happening, she steps in close like she’s suddenly going to kiss him, but takes a whiff of his breath instead and says he can’t drive drunk. He’s even more stumped when she knows his hometown, but she points out that he has more pressing concerns, and offers him a ride.

She hands him a handkerchief to wipe the blood from his lip and tells him to just cry instead of biting his lip to hold it in. She sighs that he must have a story he can’t share with anyone, and a tear falls as he looks out the window.

Back at the hotel, his girlfriend comes out to find his car still parked there and hears from the valet that he left with another woman fitting Yu-ra’s description.

Her friends warn her that Yu-ra might be falling back into old habits (stealing friends’ boyfriends), but the girlfriend says rather unconvincingly that it won’t matter because Yu-ra has no money after her divorce, and money is what Mattei cares about.

At the hospital, Bo-tongie realizes that she’s still saran-wrapped and heads out to ask for a pair of scissors, only to run into Mattei as he’s arriving and get yelled at for looking so silly at a time like this. Aw. Don’t be mean to Bo-tongie.

He runs over to Mom and pleads with her to get up so they can go home, and demands that they go see his father this instant, not understanding her stubbornness when she should lean on someone when she’s sick.

The nurse warns her against straining to speak, and Yu-ra walks into the hospital room just as Mattei gets a call from his girlfriend. She tells him to take the call since she’ll be suspicious otherwise, and offers to watch over Mom.

But as soon as he leaves the room, Yu-ra’s gaze turns cold and she tells Mom it took her a very long time to find them because they hid so well. Well that’s creepy.

Mom’s eyes widen in panic, and Yu-ra says Mattei doesn’t seem to know whose son he is. She thinks it’s time he finds his rightful place, and she’s going to see to it that he gets there. Mom starts to struggle to breathe…

Mattei answers his phone and tells his girlfriend curtly not to call him for a while, when suddenly Bo-tongie’s voice echoes in the hallway, calling out to ajumma to wake up. He runs into the room and screams and wails at Mom to wake up, but he’s too late.

He sits numbly in the funeral room, refusing to change into his mourning clothes and stand in Mom’s funeral when he wasn’t enough of a son to know she was sick and take care of her when it mattered.

Bo-tongie comes with the only picture of his mom she could find, and he realizes that’s the photo he picked out for her the other night. Oof, it was her funeral photo?

He goes to put the photo up but can’t bear to let it go, and curls up on the floor, clutching it as he sobs. Bo-tongie cries to see him in such pain.

After the funeral he sits in Mom’s yard, sighing at the sight of her worn shoes still sitting out. Yu-ra shows up, again out of nowhere, and this time he doesn’t even seem shocked that she knows where his mother lived.

He tells her that he was once dying of curiosity about her, but he doesn’t have the mental space for that anymore, and says he’ll deal with it if he comes across her again. But Yu-ra says something else is about to pique his curiosity: “The password.”

She says he’ll need the password to meet his father, and she’s the one who heard it from his mother in the end. He asks who she is, but she just answers cryptically that she’s the one who has the password that’s so important to his life…

“It means, Dokko Mattei, you’re mine.”

COMMENTS

I wasn’t expecting a mystery, so I found that to be a nice twist for Han Chae-young’s character, because I’d have been bored with her if she were just another rich woman Mattei goes after. But Yu-ra seems evil and cryptic enough to keep her interesting, because I can’t figure out what it is she wants—Mattei himself, what he is to inherit, or something else entirely? Inasmuch as it’s just a birth secret, I don’t care much about him being entitled to wealth (in fact I hope it’s not that simple), but her scheme seems revenge-driven and twisted in a fun way.

Dokko Mattei is an interesting character to set up as a hero because he seems designed to be disliked on first impression. He’s cold, full of himself, and uses women for material gain without qualms. Everything about what he’s doing feels wrong. And I think I really would hate him if Jang Geun-seok weren’t playing him with equal parts humor and depth. I dislike what Mattei has become, but I can see that there’s more to the story and more to the character, and that he’s pitiable in a way that his outward demeanor wouldn’t suggest.

Just when you think he’s maybe a gigolo by another name, we see that he has a boyish innocent side around Bo-tongie. And then he’s back to trading affection for lavish gifts, but then we see him cover up his wounded pride. He walks a fine line, and I do think this is a case where you thank your lucky stars you have an actor who can manage to play all sides. I don’t like who Mattei is now, but from what we’ve seen in the first episode, he doesn’t like himself very much either.

I’m glad that Bo-tongie isn’t made out to be ugly, because it’s already hard enough to believe that she’s supposed to be average. She’s less complex as a character, but I like her quirks—she’s got a dirty mind that turns everything into an innuendo, and she’s refreshingly forward. I think she’ll be a fun heroine to root for, because she’ll go after what she wants, and she’s likable from the start.

I’m not madly in love right off the bat, but I liked the first episode, which did a good job of introducing our core characters, setting up a fast-paced mystery, and surprising me with some depth that I didn’t know would be there. It’s pretty overt about its men-as-objects reversal, with every woman from Bo-tongie to the sugar mama girlfriend to Yu-ra declaring Mattei hers like a possession. And sure, slaying women with your pretty looks everywhere you go isn’t exactly what I’d call a problem, but it does open up a myriad of complications that mere mortals don’t have to deal with, which is part of the fun.

Bo-tong is not a dumb or weak character that makes you want to pull your hair out but rather a confident, funny, and cute girl you can sometimes relate to......Yu-ra gives Matae the mission to seduce a total of ten women to gain true success.....With every woman Matae meets, he discovers that they all hold different keys to success, and learns from them..... From the first woman he learns money, from the second woman he learns how to read other people's feelings, from the third woman he learns personal connections, and so on.......of course Yu-ra isn't just randomly helping Matae unconditionally.....once she brings up Matae to the very top, she wants something in return......the story is deep, not just about romance but also philosophy, and the secret of Matae's birth and family connections revealed....although if you are looking for lots of heart fluttering romance, you will be disappointed..... -> http://pink-marmalade.blogspot.com/2013/06/favourite-manhwa-beautiful-guy.html

OMO! I am speechless. This drama is excellent. JKS' acting is extremely solid. Dokgo mate is vain, snob, foolish, funny, vulnerable, filial, acting cool, playboy,... all in one.

What a new era hero.. haha. I like this imperfection characters of the hero who has perfect look. Awesome!

This is the first time I watch IU in a drama and she surprises me with her acting talent

I thought I'd give this a try, since JGS is a very good actor, IMO. But he is so girly-looking (long hair or short) that it stretches the bounds of credulity to believe adult women would be willing to shell out good money for him.

As for IU's character - her sole ambition in life is to be his wife? Wow. Way to set women back 100 years, drama writers. My jaw literally dropped at that line. It's bad enough to see sentiment like this among teenagers, but this is an adult woman. Still mooning after a guy from high school all these years later, to the point where she seems not to have too much else going on in her life? That's not entertaining and cute - it's pathological.

I'm bowing out of this one. I'd really love to see JGS in a drama that gives him a chance to show off his acting chops and have a real, meaty story, not just be an inexplicable lust object for the female population.

how does that set women back 100 years? I think people forget feminism is mainly about CHOICE. If she WANTS to be his wife and is passionate about it, so be it. It'd be another story if she was groomed for it by family since she was a child and wanted to do something else with her life but couldn't due to feeling she had to marry him. Miss me with that PC rage....

You missed my point entirely. There's nothing wrong with being someone's wife, and being passionate about it. But if your SOLE ambition in life is to be a specific person's wife, I stand by my assertion that is problematic. If you want nothing but to be someone's wife, what happens if you never get the guy (especially because in this case, so far the romance is one-sided), or if you get divorced, or the guy dies? You have no goals, no dreams, no plans to accomplish anything of your own? No desire to do anything for yourself or anyone else? You essentially are saying that you are nothing and have nothing worth accomplishing outside of the man you're pursuing. That's not a valid "choice" -- that's a personality disorder.

Sadly there are people like that in real life, and they generally are not happy. If you make one single person the sole source of all your hopes and dreams and accomplishments, it means there's something lacking in you. It's also not a healthy relationship. It's not normal, and it puts too much pressure on the other person. That's nothing to do with feminism; it's common sense.

By the way, your "PC rage" comment was totally off the mark. I come from a very traditional (and religious) background where a woman's role as wife and mother is supposed to be one of the main, if not the chief, purposes in her life. I love my husband very much, and would be devastated if anything happened to him. But I'd be ashamed of myself as a person if I thought he was the only thing worthwhile about my life. And he'd respect me a lot less if that was the case as well.

Faye - you have probably seen enough of my posts to know that I am totally anti-anti-feminist.

That said, and at the risk of bringing up Heirs once again - do ANY of the females in that show have any ambitions at all except to marry another chaebol heir (with the exception of ES, who just wants "a job")?

@Windsun33, I can't help feeling I'm being trolled here :), but I'll take the bait.

First, "Heirs" is certainly no feminist model, and I've been the first to point out its significant problems. But regarding the point you brought up: among the women, Esther Lee has successfully built up her own business. Kim Tan's fake mother is head of Jeguk High. Eun Sang's oma works -as a maid, granted, but at least she's self-sufficient. Kim Tan's real mother has nothing going on except being the Chairman's concubine. But the writers have clearly made her a cautionary tale, so that works.

Among the students, I'm a little more lenient because they're 18, not 26. But Eun Sang works several jobs. The issue of other interests hasn't come up with the other girls, but neither have they literally come out and said their only ambition is to be such-and-such's wife.

I may be biased against "Pretty Man" because I found the premise kind of gross and the characters unlikeable. IU's character is 26, still lives at home, is rude to her mother, and kind of has no life outside of her fixation on Ma-Tei. Characters don't have to be good to be interesting, but the female lead seemed like such a loser to me. I'll just sit this one out.

But, really - watch ep2, especially the fortune telling part :D (hint - you too can get a $2.20 cashback bonus).

I get what you mean, but I don't see how a personality disorder (as you said) has anything to do with setting women back 100 years...
People are always saying women should be able to have choices in life and whatnot, but when they choose to do something that's not the feminist ideal, they're suddenly looked down upon. If she wants to be the wife of someone, that is her choice. And there's nothing wrong with being ambitious about that. Of course there's a chance that it won't end up that way, but that can be said for ANY goal in life. Someone who spends their life thinking they want to be a doctor, but in the end can't get into any medical school will just be as devastated.
Anyway, people who have read the manhwa said all the main characters have a 3D personality, so I think there's probably more to Botongie than meets the eye.

She's also just a fictional character (from a comic as well), so it's expected for things to be kind of wacky.

"I get what you mean, but I don’t see how a personality disorder (as you said) has anything to do with setting women back 100 years…"

I was referring to the fact that the drama seems to be signing off on this kind of behavior and outlook.

It really does not, but you will have to watch ep2 to see more :)... especially the car driving scene..

It's actually pretty normal for asian girls to live with their parents until they are married. =3=

If this was a totally serious drama, then I would take issue with that line about her only ambition, but it is very obvious that this is also a parody of many other typical k-drama situations.

I would also agree with you if all the female characters in this drama were like Botong, but the fact that the women that Mat Te has to seduce are all successful women. That is so he can gain wealth and power by understanding how these 10 women became the most successful in Korea.

So in fact this drama doesn't set women back but really propels them forward. I feel like it is actually the opposite of Heirs considering that most of the women have their positions because of their husbands and the shares of stock that they have namely Esther lee and Madame jung. Madame jung's husband is the chairman of everything Jeguk, which explains why Madame Jung has her position. Esther lee through her divorce received majority shares of the business that her and her ex husband own together, which also explains why she wants to marry YD father and why she wants her daughter to marry KT so that they will also gain shares of Jeguk group. In my opinion Esther Lee is the worst example to use as a self sufficient successful woman. She didn't marry for true love (Chanyoung's father) because she said herself that he wasn't rich enough. So your argument is invalid. Also I might add that the title of heirs in itself shows that these kids will gain this money and power not through hard work of their own but because of who their families are.

Thanks for your recap. I will try to watch this say at least after 4 episodes :-)

I didn't know that JKS and LMH is at the same age, both born in 1987. Ooo. No wonder I saw articles on web on comparing these two actors.

I only watch JKS in 2 serious role before, that is Hwanjini and Lovers in Prague and after an awful drama, KBS's Mary Stayed out Night, and low rating Love Rain, I'm a bit disappointed in his performance.

I hope this drama can bring back his good acting.

I didn't know what to expect from this show, but it certainly surprised me. It's fun and quirky, with a mystery. I wasn't expecting the mystery, and the way Yu-ra acts makes me suspicious and untrusting of her. I hope Mattei doesn't fall for her, because she's really creepy.

IU is great here. I wasn't expecting her character to be funny, but she is. I'm rooting for Bo-tongie right off. What's not to like about her?

Thanks for the recap, GF!

Truthfully, I wasnt expecting much from this new k-drama. Pretty man as title seemed cliche/shallow at first glance. JKS was also getting a bad rep since going to Japan and making a bold statement that LoveRain burned him.
Anyway, I went through episode one and boy, I was able to go through with my cup of coffee without throwing up. It is cutesy-cutesy as said, a rom-com , but way better than Heirs.
I found IU flowers distracting, but found her honesty and lusty imagination really funny. She is after all 26. Im glad they didnt make her character too innocent or naive. The collarbone and muscle vein scenes made me laugh. Its realistic enough for a healthy young woman to notice these things.
JKS character was more than I expected. Ive read a similar mangas with the kind of theme. Pretty guy.... Vain...arrogant....selfish...
But the writers are clever enough to make him more human. His beauty is also his curse. You can see that he is using it to his advantage (like other pretty wimen do)... And why not? But then again you see his disgust and apathy because people treat him like a piece of meat/trophy.
Added to this I was expecting a love triangle but it seems IU will be against an evil beautyJKS rather than a competitor for JKS character.

So far ... So good.

I dated one man who was exceptionally handsome. It is a curse. Girls would trail after us walking in the mall. Waitresses would give him their number while I was having dinner with him. He was an actor, and the fans would mob him after performances.

Luckily for me, he just didn't notice any other woman while we were dating and I'm not the jealous type. But still ... it gets old being interrupted by strangers.

There is a downside to being too extraordinary looking.

I had the same problem when my wife and I first came back to the states, and your post reminded me of that (it has been a while). At that time she looked very much like Rachel in Heirs, and whenever guys thought she was alone, it was like wolves sniffing out prey. In a way it was funny, but a couple of times it got kind of annoying when the guys insisted on being persistent.

I already like MaTe a lot. I understand him using the only asset he has - his good looks and charm - to try to help his Mom. Want to know how a man will be as a husband, look at how he treats his Mom. If he wasn't bluntly honest with his rich girlfriend about wanting her for her wealth, I would have more of an issue with him. I see MaTe as a to-be-rehabilitated rogue.

SPECULATION
My first impression is Yoo-Ra must be his half-sister (or someone close enough to hope to compete with him for the inheritance). Explains why she would be seeking him out. The "you are mine" threw me a bit ... is she seeking marriage as a way to get wealth from this boy she knows to be a chaebol son?

The relative twist makes him being intrigued by this mysterious beautiful woman really funny.

I like him meeting his match in someone beautiful enough to capture his attention the way he does to all the woman around him.

I am reminded of What's Up Fox's Byeong-Hee character with Bo-Tong's sexual frustration. I am reminded of Playful Kisses' Oh HaNi with the single-minded determination to get the one-and-only man. BT is going to be a lot of laughs.

I liked that BT had a loving relationship with his Mom. That sealed the OTP deal for me ... he loved his Mom and Mom chose BT as the person to look out for her son. The rest is just playful fun to watch, I am already on the ship!

This is a relief to me, because I never got on Mirae-Shin ship and I am only half interested in Heirs in spite of lots of pretty men there. So I am fingers crossed optimistic that this will be awesome.

I'm a JGS fan but only like about half his dramas, so I went into this with trepidation. So glad the first ep looks promising. It didn't take a lot to make me fangirl squeal over JGS's looks.

pleasent and interesting 1st episode.
i was going to see this drama for the same reason you r all watching it, Jang Geun-seok, beacause i believe in him as a brilliant actor, unpredictable and chameleon. as soon as you think you figured his ability as an actor he surprises you with more.
but i'm not holding my breath, that it'll be a deep story.
Still, low expectations is the better than a high ones.

I even laughed like a crazy person at the preview for ep2. I think I need help :(

But yeah, after the emotional roller coaster of Heirs, the WTF of Heirs, and the very annoying ahjumma in Mi Rae, I am for sure ready for some totally off the wall.

I mean where else would you see a girl show up in a hospital all wrapped up in saran wrap...

Thank you GF

Comment first, I read all beanies comments and I was like smiling and being happy, as it seems many people have put their new perception in this drama. PM team - writer, directors, actors, crew, and even Louis Jr- did it. It worked. Beanies mentioned their fav scenes and it’s not only one scene, there are scenes are memorable enough from the silly to the sad ones.

One of my fav scenes, Botongie collecting dried leaves while accompanying matte’s mom to meet father. I thought it was just for nothing but then she arranged them into dried leave flower bouquet and gave it to mom. It’s awesome, the writer knew how to optimize Botong char -recycling things - from the start.

Just one that bothering me, JGS was like holding back Matte character as if being away from small screen made him a bit awkward and overreact in front of camera. I hope that I was wrong –he just followed what the director said for his char.

I couldn't stream for viki and other sites haven't upload PM ep 2. Sad

Jang Geun Suk acting is praise worthy. I'm surprised to have come across soo many variations in his character and acting in the pilot episode itself.
I thought of giving this a chance for his acting though I disliked His previous two dramas....and am glad he didn't disappoint me .

I don't really like IU or her acting and I do think It's a mismatch...JGS looks to have better chemistry with HCY. Well It's only my opinion.

I disagree - I think that IU is doing very well in this. I love her over the top bubblicious character and the fact that she has a LOT of lust in her cute little heart (if you watch the car scene in ep2 you will know what I mean).

This story gonna be very meaningful. A story between apparent beauty, the truth of money value and love. The writer of Miracle in Cell No.7, who is able to tell a story that moved people's heart and make them feel the ironic pains. Jang Geun Suk returns with his outstanding acting skills. Someone says he overacts but I think he's trying to illustrate Ma Te's pain inside, a very aching pain about money and love. MaTe has nothing but beauty to gain money that he thinks is to help his mom and him live well but then he learn that, Love is the thing he needs. Believe me, this gonna be a hit drama also (forgetting stupid ratings). Though Geun Suk's acting skills are not new to everyone, he did a good job this time.

just finished watching Ep.2. Surprisingly, I find this drama very entertaining... sometimes a light drama with a storyline out of a manhwa is really quite enjoyable... IU's acting is very funny, her thoughts are perversive & hilarious. She gives me a good laugh after a long & stressful day at school... ha ha ha...

IU is a pervert, and I love the change from the usual k-drama trope where a 26 year old faints at the sight of a bare shoulder.

WOW, after Ep 2, it is even more entertaining show. And beyond that, I found it would bring a deep message after each woman he needs to conquer.
Funny and smart Ma Te (but he is just learning to find out his wisdom). Cutie Bo Tong and devoted girl, a girl that tries untiredly to earn every cent to buy her ideal boy a car. And willing to devote a whole life even just to exchange chances to look at Ma Te face everyday.
Very admiring love she has.

Liking this one too. Early Christmas, if i can ship through this til the end. JGS did not disappoint (even as expectations were already lowered). He reminds me of one admirer in my teen years. I was and still am average. And it is the first time i related to a character on that level after so many years of drama watching. yay! I hope JGS keeps to pace. Fighting! IU, it is the first time I saw her in a drama, so still getting to know her. Agreed with GF (thank you, by the way) 'made out not to be ugly, but average' and all its implications. Her wild imagination will be hilarious to watch. Writer-nim, i hope you will maintain her spunky personality and not turn her to an idiot, noble or otherwise. We know how it is to adore someone for 10 years. But for this to be really good romance, i hope the interaction with the leads will point to how we can imagine them 10-20 years hence; and not just some deux ex machina or lightbulb moment, for clearly they have known each other for sometime. And folks, this is manhwa. So even if i am not familiar with the genre, i can understand some caricature moments. Let's enjoy the ride!

I'm finding this drama interesting and refreshing. It makes you want more. I'm glad to see JGS acting again, and Matte is absolutly funny, he is so full of himself but still a loser. I love how JGS can make him so endearing.
IU acting has never been that good, and in the hospital scene it's so obvious that she doesn't meet the rest of the cast in terms of acting. I'm liking her, though...when not crying , she is just the perfect lead girl for this drama...

I'm sad you won't continue recapping :(

The first 2 ep were so refreshing. IU's character is so quirky and perverted LOLLLL . Her acting has improved a lot. Esp in the funeral scenes. She didn't exaggerate her crying since the Ma TE's mom wasn't THAT close to her even though she really likes Bo Tong. I understand why some feel that Bo Tong's character is a bit annoying considering she is 26, but I have a feeling that her character is much more complicated than it seems to be. Only 2 eps have aired so I am looking forward to some pleasant surprises later. JGS did a decent job as always.

JGS is a cut above the typical Korean actor...I find him intelligent, great actor and multi faceted. He speaks his mind, he is more of a free spirit - this is the result of him getting to live and be exposed in a different culture aside from Korea. Korea is a closed society, where it puts everybody in a box, everybody looks the same, acts the same , same manufactured personalities and show.

JGS is refreshing for an actor. He is able to break out of the mold, express himself , most Koreans don"t get him - but the Japanese and Chinese do , so that speaks volume. Did I say he is intelligent, listen to his interviews , he has depth, he is quick witted, he is not just a pretty face and for me that is what makes him sexy...being different. He can have a long career, he can do it all , song, dance, drama and appeal. Good luck ....and I hope he enjoys his life , grow as an Artist and stop worrying so much of the people who didn't get him. The world is full of people - for every 1 negative there will be plenty of positive - just put passion and enjoy your work and people will follow .

JGS is a fine actor , overall a better actor compared to ...wait for it...Lee Min Ho . Don't get me wrong , I am a Lee Min Ho fan first but after seeing JGS dramas Acting wise he is better. LMH as an actor is spotty, there are some situations that he simply can't nail it. Okay...I'm from the US , just sayin...

i agree with you, though both of them r my favorite actors, i watched Heirs because of LMH, but he disappointed me in it specially as he is concentrating on his looks which is weird. especially when JGS's Pretty Man is all about his looks, i don't find him half focused on his looks like LMH.
In BOF and City Hunter and Faith he was engrossed in the character hence he was brilliant. i hope he recover soon as i find him better actor than handsome. and i still believe in him.

as for JGS, i always say that he is wasting himself, and i hope he also woke up soon. Meanwhile i'll enjoy his coming back drama and pry it will be worth the waiting.

To start with, i am a JGS and IU fan and definitely delighted to hear that they will be paired up in a drama. But i hate its concept of a man using woman, a lead female is blindly in love with the lead male and making female so pathetic! Yes, its intruiging and interesting as a whole and it has funny antics to add, but i am not in the point that i want to download it and rewatch it. I hope this impression wont last that will prevent me from following this drama.

But, but... I am most intrigued how Lee Jang Woo will make me cry, break my heart and beg IU to choose him instead of JGS! I hope this curiosity keeps me moving...

2nd episode was even better than the 1st in my opinion, i hope the story will pursue Mattei's business training on the hands of his women, and not only the "love triangle" theme.
KIM BO-TONG's character is very very refreshing "thank U very much" she is not predictable, not dull, not playing cute, not adhere to morals, sneaky, has guts and a dirty mind (i like that she worship Mattei with a dirty mind not a romantic heart). She is a actually a BERVERT, I love it 
my favorite scene is when she "attacked" the toothbrush, that was soooo hilarious, i also love her sneaky laugh.
and Yu-ra's character is very interesting and well acted.
i also like Mattei's girlfriend or sugarmama, her rule is getting interesting.
i don't care for the fortune-teller scene or the carton thoughts scenes
every one's acting is excellent except oddly enough and i'm sad to say it (Jang Geun-seok), maybe (i hope) he doesn't feel the character because he repeated it many times. because i still think this drama is a waste of his talent.

u can see this drama on

it is obvious that she did not like it, which is ok of course, so don't force her to follow the drama when she hates it, i think she doesn't want to spoil it for us and influence our opinion.
i think i'll just keep posting my comments as long as i'm watching it.
