Kang Haneul and Nam Ji-hyun courted for Angel Eyes

There’s finally some traction on the casting front for the new SBS drama Angel Eyes, from the PD of Will It Snow For Christmas and the writer of Operation Proposal and Boys Over Flowers. There’s still no word on the leads (names from Han Ye-seul to Kim Haneul have been bandied about along with denials and iffy considerations), but the production is in talks with Kang Haneul (Heirs, Monstar) and Nam Ji-hyun (Hwa-yi, To the Beautiful You) to play the leads’ childhood counterparts.

Kang Haneul seems a bit old to be playing childhood roles (he’s 23), though I think this drama will be setting its “childhood” portion more in high school or thereabouts, so it’s no less weird than Heirs or Monstar. Nam Ji-hyun, who’s 18, seems perfect for the part, and since it’s being directed by the PD of Will It Snow For Christmas, she’s a natural choice for a reunion. It also makes sense why the heroine role was offered to Han Ye-seul out of the gate, which would’ve made them child/adult counterparts for the same character again, but that’s not looking too likely at this point.

It’s going to be SBS’s next weekend series, about a pair of first loves who are forced to part because of a painful family history. The hero will do the sending away, and they’ll reunite twelve years later. That’s all we get for now. It leaves the field wide open for all sorts of drama so there’s no telling what direction it’ll take, but it sounds like a classic late-90s, early 2000s melo setup.

Angel Eyes will follow Thrice Married Woman and premiere in March.

If they sign on, such solid young cast that I kinda hope they'd be the leads!

On a related note, any opinions on whether Thrice Married Woman is any good (for a weekend drama)? I'm wondering if it's worth tuning in.

If you like serious drama that tackles the challenges of married and single life, in-law problems, divorce and its impact on the children, and the class divide, I think "Thrice Married Woman" is worth watching. It has frank dialogue that can sometimes make one uncomfortable and evaluate one's beliefs about marriage and single life. It's different from the other family dramas I've seen.

Can I say I wasn't interested in that drama but your description makes me want to check it out? I'm all for shows that try to depict the messiness and difficulty of modern relationships and it sounds like it has that in spades. Thanks!

I Miss Han Ye Seul in dramaland. I just wish that the Korean netizens and drama producers could look past her transgression(s) and give her a second chance.

I hope he goes back to his "Monstar" haircut. I really didn't like his hair in "Heirs".

Other than that... I'm happy about this new project.

can't they make a drama with this 2 as leads...he has so much potential to be a leading guy or even evil one and not so small parts

My feeling as well. I've been wondering why he's only been given bit parts and 2nd leads. He should break out. He certainly has the looks and the talent.

No kidding. I loved him in Monstar and liked him in Heirs, I think he would be awesome as a lead in something. Kind of disappointing he's just the "child" actor for this drama. But it doesn't sound like something I would watch anyway, so it all cancels out?

Why Nam Ji Hyun always have to be the childhood version o the leads? I'm waiting for her to get the lead role in 16-episodes drama since 2009's Queen Seondeok; no luck until today. All of her former childhood co-stars, including Lee Hyun Woo and Kim Soo Hyun are already famous but she is still playing the childhood version of the leads :( She is such a good actress. Well, better than nothing, though, but still :(

Same here too. Why is she have to act as childhood leading. She older now why can't she take on leading role. I know, her former co-star are all ready going up and making name for them but Nam Ji Hyun is still stuck to childhood role. I really want to see her and Kim Soo Hyun again.

For a moment I thought Kang Haneul and Nam Ji-hyun were being courted to BE the leads, and got all excited - but now I'm disappointed. He was great in Heirs and Monstar, and showed he could be really good at romance if given even the shadow of a chance - I hope they use that for this drama, too.

nam ji hyun... I missed you!!!
I think I will be tuning in this because of her..
I hope they can get the adult version who can transition better than han Yeseul.. I like han Yeseul but I honestly felt that there was some disconnect in Nam Ji Hyun and Her version of the character for Will it snow for christmas...
I like the PD for WISFC and I am not too sure with the writer... but I will check this out for Ji hyun...

While I like both of these actors, I'm a little disappointed. Kang Haneul has proven more than once that he's a capable actor, and yet he keeps getting these bit parts. When can he be a lead?

Yes. Please. Kang ha Neul deserves a lead role. Not a child role or 2nd lead. He was awesome in Monstar and crimanally underutilized in Heirs. Well everyone was in that drama really.
