Yoon Sang-hyun’s suspense thriller Gap-dong moves to weekends

Production is underway for tvN’s newest serial killer thriller Gap-dong, starring Yoon Sang-hyun in a re-team with the PD of I Hear Your Voice. The show has locked in its cast and is gearing up for an April premiere, after having been moved to a new timeslot on Fridays and Saturdays following Emergency Couple’s run. It actually makes more sense than the original plan to follow Monday-Tuesday drama I Need Romance 3; it seemed like a pretty stark genre jump for the network, which likes to stick to light rom-com fare in that block. (Uhm Jung-hwa’s new noona romance is taking that spot instead.)

The based-on-a-true-story serial killer mystery is about a twenty-year case involving a killer known as Gap-dong. Yoon Sang-hyun stars as a detective whose father was once the prime suspect in the original Gap-dong case. Dad caved under police interrogation and ended up committing suicide, and the hero grows up vowing to catch the real Gap-dong to clear his father’s name and get justice. He spends his whole career as a cop chasing dead ends, and is about to give up after the statute of limitations has passed… when Gap-dong resurfaces.

Sung Dong-il (Answer Me 1994) co-stars as the veteran detective who was sure that Yoon Sang-hyun’s father was the killer and went after him in the original case. He’s still convinced that he was right, and his extreme prejudice against Yoon Sang-hyun (for being the son of a murderer) makes for a combative working relationship. Kim Min-jung (Queen of the Night) has signed on to play a psychiatrist with a mysterious double life and a suspicious curiosity for all things Gap-dong.

Idol actor Lee Joon (IRIS 2) will be a seemingly normal barista with a genius IQ (uh, because that’s so normal), who also happens to have the disposition to be a dangerous psychopath. That sounds creepy, but then he’s also too young to be a killer from twenty years ago, right? And Kim Ji-won (Heirs) plays a webtoon artist who becomes the killer’s next target. I hope it’s actually scary, but based on I Hear Your Voice and the character descriptions, I think we can expect some tingly spines out of this one.

Gap-dong will follow Emergency Couple in April.

The genius barista might be too young to be the same killer, but they might go for a copycat plot or then he could be an adviser to the detective. Who better to help profile a monster than someone with the same mental disposition? Who has hopefully not crossed that fine line between 'still quite sane' and 'strangling women to death'...

When I heard about the genius barista before, I thought of the end of God's Quiz 3, and now that it's "disposition to be a dangerous psychopath"? ...totally the same type of character. This will be so exciting!

I'd say that sounds a bit over the top, but then this is Dramaland. Bwahaha!

Genius bartender vampire psychopath. Now that will make one hell of a CV. But I do hope he's on the good or at least grey side.

Why barista though, of all things? Did they get a coffee product placement or something?

But this way, he has the perfect drama trope to help him escape if he's a baddie. "Studying abroad". A la 'Coffee Prince'.

And yes, PPL will probably be raging. Let's hope it just includes them having their chats in a coffee shop rather than him advertising types of coffee or making coffee brand metaphors or some other try-hard PPL move like that. It's terrible when done wrong.

because it's the perfect dl job where you can also listen in on unsuspecting people and lalalala blablabla
sort of a tired occupation in drama land...in real life too though

This sounds even more intresting, quite waiting for the upcoming dinamics in the work place between Yoon Sang Hyun character and Sung Dong Il...Joon character sounds intresting on paper with the disposition of a killer line added, the genius boy is now a banal and boring plot...Maybe the guy is the son of the real killer and follows his footsteps or is some guy who thinks the killer is awesome, that kind of sick idol, thing and whant's to imitate him and his works,i hope is more than a mere face because it's not enough for me if they use Joon like that...

I hope it's as good as IHYV. Better if they have thrilling mystery murder or something like roller coaster experience like in IHYV.
I also hope they don't waste Kim Ji Won's talent

I'm in this for the IHYV pedigree (talk about dark horses, that show) and Kim Ji-won.

I noticed that her character description doesn't make her a high schooler this time around, unlike what was previously reported - I hope that means her character is (if she has a profession, anyway) an adult.

Thanks for the description. This sounds interesting! I've liked Yoon Sang-hyun since I first saw him in Take Care of the Young Lady, and I think he's entertaining. I think I'll check it out!
