It’s a My Girl reunion in Hotel King’s first stills
The My Girl reunion is now a thing of reality! (And not just a figment of our overactive imaginations, or maybe a product of our feverish shipping dreams.)
Lee Dong-wook and Lee Dae-hae have reteamed after first meeting in the bubbly romance My Girl eight years ago, which catapulted them both to fame. This time around they take on a more serious project with MBC’s upcoming weekend drama Hotel King, which has released these stills from the show’s first shoots.
On paper, it sounds like the character types they’re playing aren’t too far from those they played back then — he’s a cool hotelier, she’s a cheerful hotel heiress (okay, she was a fraud heiress in My Girl, but still!) — but I’m pretty sure the two dramas will be worlds apart. The hero’s driven by revenge (he and his mother were abandoned cruelly) and positions himself as the enemy to the heroine’s father, who is the president of a posh hotel. There will probably be lots of angst and tears — just a hunch.
I am inexplicably interested in this match-up because My Girl remains one of my happy comfort watches, even though it’s not even one of my top 5 Hong Sisters dramas, let alone top 5 of all time. It just has that feel-good charm. Even so, I have to approach with wariness, considering that it’s a longish weekend drama (though it’s 32 episodes, which is less daunting than 50) and comes from the PD of Aurora Princess (yes, that Aurora Princess) and the writer of Feast of the Gods. So while they’ve got high ratings under their belts, it also comes with high levels of makjang. Proceed with caution?
Hotel King will replace Gold Rainbow and premieres on April 5.
