Bae Soo-bin, Lee Yoon-ji in angsty drama special That Love

Bae Soo-bin (Secret, 49 Days) and Lee Yoon-ji (King’s Family, The Great Seer) star in an upcoming KBS2 drama special called That Love (or That Kind of Love). The drama short, directed by Cha Young-hoon (Shark, Gaksital) and written by Lee Joo-yeon, is about the ill-fated love between a convict and a civil servant.

In the single-episode story, Bae Soo-bin has committed a murder and is serving a life sentence, while Lee Yoon-ji, the public servant, is subject to daily abuse from a violent husband. In prison, she is assigned to Bae Soo-bin and tries hard to present herself to him cheerfully, but her actions belie her own unhappiness. They fall for each other, but clearly, it is not meant to be.

When asked about their participation in That Love, Bae Soo-bin said, “I was completely engrossed by the script — it sucked me in. It’s a heavy love story that will exceed expectations.” Lee Yoon-ji said that she grew from her experience inhabiting a single character in 50-episode weekender King’s Family and was attracted to this role because the lead has completely repressed her personal agony. “I’m using all of my concentration to convey the character’s inner self.”

While sad romances aren’t typically my first choice, I’m more amenable when it comes in a drama special/one-act package — I like these two and the story seems gripping enough to be a watch. That Love will air on April 13th at 11:55pm on KBS2.

I can only seem to see Bae Soo-bin as the villainous boyfriend from Secret. The downcast sad look he's giving in the photo above is encouraging that thought even more.

I like Yoon-ji...although I admit my love for her is bit less after King's Family. Still, this looks like an intriguing role so I look forward to it.

This will be funny 'cause we can just assume that this picks off from where secret ended. He DID end up in jail there ! XD

Why do i get the feeling he always chooses either villainous, shady, revengful, or cheating roles in heavy dramas.. 49 days, secret, temptation of angel now this..

He's also been the second lead who never gets the girl (sadly) in Brilliant Legacy and Dong Yi. Coincidentally, the girl was Han Hyo Joo in both of them.

He's on my list of favorite second leads as Park Jong Se for Brilliant Legacy/Shining Inheritance. He and Han Jae Suk as HyunWoo in Ooh La La Spouses are kind of tied in the top spot for me on my list of 2nd leads that I really wish I could have in real life.

I haven't seen any of his villain roles yet as I've only ever seen him in BL/SI and the movie Girlfriends.

BSN was also quite good in "Jumong" as an aide de camp to a powerful merchant trading family - who was a man who wasn't quite a man.

Maybe it's the only kind of roles he gets? I don't think he's being offered dozens of roles and he just chooses the villainous ones on purpose. He's not an A-list actor, so he may not have too many options to begin with and he probably can't afford turning down too many parts.

He's sort of like Uhm Ki Joon - neither have really had their big break yet and neither have achieved permanent leading man status. Which is a shame, cause they're both talented. But I do think that darker characters can potentially turn out to be meatier roles than your typical stock male leads... and sadly this probably is the only sort of roles he's being offered.

I saw Lee Yoon-ji in the movie Couples, I enjoyed it, thought it was funny.

Now that I look at them together I can totally see them as an on-screen couple. I think they might have great chemistry here.

I love them both despite recent roles, but seriously, is he NEVER going to get the girl?!

Technically, he had the girl in Secret, and then, just kinda, lost her in the kerfluffle. ;)

Or rather, he pretty much dumped her and wanted the girl that could never be his. So it's not that he can't get a girl....he chooses the ones that hard to obtain, lol.

Love your comment, especially the kerfluffle bit.

BSB was pretty funny in the 1-act drama "My Brother Lives at Shaolin Temple". He had to shave his head for the role (other actors turned down the role because they loved their hair more :)) Thanks to MBCentertainment for this short clip also featuring some veterans like Lee Jong Hyuk, Lee Han Wie, Park Chul Min:

He likes to play life in hard mode: choosing the girl he can't have. Lol

While I can't (and wouldn't!) defend his Secret character, ya gotta admit, the actor's track record on this point is rather consistently abysmal. I'd really love to see a role where he finally got the girl, but perhaps that's just residual loyalty to Dong Yi's orabeoni talking...

Did he? He was so good in it and he got the guy at the end even though they had to split up and each follow their masters. They were so cute!

Agree completely with you. Have you watched the 2010 KBS drama special where he was adorkable opposite Kim Gyuri? I understand very little Chinese (despite being Chinese) but still found this a very enjoyable watch because it stars BSB as a dork. Someone said he resembles Mr Bean a little in that show and because of that, we think of him as Bae Soo Bean :

Don't understand why they'd bother falling in love... he's serving a life sentence for murder, don't see them having too many successful dates or that much fun together.

I like Bae Soo Bin ..and I wish to see him in a lead rule where he'll be sweet like his pre rule in Brilliant Legacy ...

I'll definitely check this one when it's aired in KBS world :) I like both leads even though I'm not in love with this kind of stories !!

awcoconuts, thank you so much -you have made my week! Love BSB, like LYJ (saw her in Pure 19, loved her as the spoilt rich daughter).

Will definitely try to watch That Love without English subs even if I don't understand Korean :) Would have loved for BSB to take on a rom-com or action drama rather than a melodrama yet again but I respect his choices.

On Soompi forum we are lucky to have Logicalsong, a great Korean fan of BSB who shares insights and information about BSB with us (not so much recently, unfortunately). BSB was one of the actors considered for a role in "My Daughter Seo Young" and as we all know, he didn't appear in it.

He also showed a comedic side to his acting when he appeared as Gwanghae in the theatrical version last year but since it's a play, we fans overseas wouldn't have a chance to see if he's successful in a comedic role.

Ah. Getting Maundy Thursday( Our Happy Times) vibes from this. Gaaah. This stuff always makes me cry. I've always been addicted to love stories with people that are epically not mean't to be together.

Seems like no has heard of it Maundy Thursday. Check it out people! Kang Dongwon is in it. But prepare a lot of tissues and a cuddle buddy. Pillows work too.

KBS World has been uploading the drama specials with English subs on Youtube eg The Dirge Singer was uploaded recently. So hopefully we'll get to see the BSB-LYJ drama on the KBS World TV channel in the first week of May :)

Can I put in a recommendation for an excellent KBS drama special " Yeonu's Summer" starring Han Yeri and Han Joo Wan, with an appearance by gangster unni from Secret as well? It's available with Eng subs on the KBS World TV channel on YT.

Hi. Pinoy here. I suggest checking the schedule on KBSWORLD's website. The drama specials are every Friday at 9pm. After it airs in KBS, it takes 3 weeks for it to be shown here and usually they upload it on the official KBSWORLD youtube channel after it aired on KBSW.

I like watching flawed characters falling and longing for each others. Just hopefully, there is a silver lining leading to somewhere like her getting away from her abusive husband. I have a soft spot for Bae Soo Bin so yeah, I will be watching.

Bae Soo-bin's characters always seem to end up in prison.

KBS's Drama Specials are usually sad and depressing, so I don't normally watch them. The last I watched fully was called Neighborhood Watch (I think) and it was hilarious. I usually like to fill an hour with humor, not crying, so I don't know if I'll watch this or not.

This reminds me of the japanese manga "Watashitachi no Shiawase na Jikan". A trully touching and beautiful love story between a volunteer who visits death row inmates and a man sentenced to death for murder. I don't usually like sad stories but I loved this one. It was deep and meaningful. It's actually based on a korean novel, I think.

Sorry for so many posts on this ... KBS uploaded three 3-minute clips - no Eng subs - but if you wish to get a flavour of the drama, perhaps you can click on the following:

may be spoilerish:

Watched the drama last night via live streaming - delayed, some buffering, without understanding the Korean dialogue - I still teared up right at the end. Highly recommended watch (this coming from a very biased Bae Soo Bin fan, though :)) Please note there is a scene near the beginning where we see a shirtless BSB - this was a most unexpected treat for yours truly ...

I thought Lee Yoon Ji was excellent.

Hi Nat, the English-subbed drama specials are aired on KBS World and subsequently uploaded on KBS World's channel on Youtube. If the dramas are shown according to the schedule, then Love Like That (English subs) will be aired on KBS World on 2 May (Friday), and repeated in the next few days.

The latest KBS special drama with Eng subs uploaded on Youtube is :" The Reason I'm Getting Married" starring Song Jong Ho.
