You’re All Surrounded: Episode 8

Romance really starts to complicate the relationships in the precinct, and mixed signals do a number on everyone in this episode. We take some baby steps forward in the love department, and then proceed to trip backwards, naturally, because being grown up and growing up are two different things entirely. We also take a big step forward in the overarching mystery—as Dae-gu and Pan-seok continue to chase each other’s tails, we learn that there are more players in the game than we thought.

EPISODE 8: “One hand’s length of growth”

Pan-seok gets all dolled up for his date and sits nervously in an old restaurant, noting that nothing has changed in this place. But Sa-kyung… oh no… she’s waiting for him at Namsan Tower. Agh, of course you’d each think the first place you met was somewhere different. Of course.

He sits there glugging water for half an hour until it finally dawns on him that he’s in the wrong place. But just as he’s running out of there, Sa-kyung has decided to give up waiting for him. No, just a few more minutes!

She ignores his call and turns off her phone, while he races up to Namsan Tower, skipping steps the whole way up and running at full speed in his dress shoes.

And just when I’m sure that he’ll have missed his shot, he looks up and Sa-kyung is on her way down those very steps. Whew. She doesn’t look inclined to stop, but he grabs her wrist and pleads with her to wait.

She grits her teeth and shoots him a frosty glare, chiding herself for thinking that people could change. She gives him credit for showing up at all, considering that it’s an improvement, but she says it’s already game over and turns to go.

He calls out breathlessly after her, “This isn’t where we first met!” He reminds her that this is where they had their first date, but he was sitting in that old udon restaurant when she walked in with a friend that he knew and they were briefly introduced. That’s when he first laid eyes on her and fell in love. Awwww.

She has her back turned to him, but the moment he says it she realizes that he was right and she was wrong, and cringes to herself. But when she turns around, he’s the one apologizing: “I’m sorry I made you wait.” I might cry.

He promises to do better from now on and call if he’s ever going to be late, and though he knows he can’t change completely, he’ll change one small thing at a time. He asks if she wants to go eat, and at first she says no, but then follows it up with a request to go back to that udon restaurant.

He beams and takes a step forward, and suddenly his legs give out and he goes tumbling to the ground. Ha. It’s embarrassing but at least it gets her laughing. It takes him three tries to stand upright on his jelly legs, but he finally hoists himself up and limps down to her, and puts a hand on her back.

On the island, Soo-sun sits up telling Dae-gu stories about her family and her hometown until he falls asleep. She’s surprised when he dozes off, since he said he has trouble sleeping, but he’s out for the night. She smiles and tucks him in.

He wakes up in the morning surprised that he slept through the night, and goes over to the bedroom doorway to peer at Soo-sun while she sleeps. Suddenly her phone rings and it jolts her awake, shooting him straight up into an awkward show of morning I-was-not-just-watching-you-sleep calisthenics.

The call is from Eung-do, who tells them that the pojangmacha suspect’s partner in crime has been caught, and he confessed to everything. At least they know they’re tailing the right guy; now all they need to do is catch him.

Just then, Dae-gu’s batphone rings. Pan-seok tells Combat Boots that he’s sorry about missing their meeting yesterday, but can see him at noon today. Dae-gu only has one shot off the island if he’s going to make that meeting, so he shouts that he’s going to take a day trip to Seoul and takes the car, leaving Soo-sun sputtering.

He drives down to the dock in a hurry, but wouldn’t you know it—their pojangmacha suspect drives right past him in the other direction. He must’ve arrived on the first boat in.

Dae-gu realizes who he is just as he reaches the dock, and slams on the brakes. He’s frozen with indecision, knowing that if he gets on that boat, the criminal goes free, but if he turns around, he loses his one chance to catch Combat Boots.

He lets out a yelp and puts the car in reverse. Aw, you ARE a cop. He races down the road until he catches up to the bad guy and after chasing him down the narrow road, he finally cuts him off, forcing the thug to stop.

Dae-gu jumps him before he can run away, but the guy gets in a few hits and pulls out a knife in the middle of the fight. Still, Dae-gu gains the upper hand and forces him down to the ground. After cuffing him and reading his rights, Dae-gu collapses in the street next to him, and can’t help but laugh in satisfaction for a job well done.

Once the suspect is cuffed to the car and Soo-sun is with him, Dae-gu sighs that he’s crazy for missing that boat. She drags him aside to tend to his scrapes, giddy over the fact that they caught the bad guy.

He takes issue with “we,” but she reminds him that partners are one body. He calls her soybean powder, which is basically like saying she’s stray crumbs that you can’t shake off, as in riding on his coattails.

She asks what happened to his important thing in Seoul, and he grumps at her not to ask because it’s driving him insane. She teases, “It wasn’t a reunion with your decade-long first love, was it?”

She pinches his cheeks, calling him adorable, and makes a meta joke about this being “special praise.” (It’s what Kim Hee-ae called it when she did it to Yoo Ah-in in Secret Love Affair.)

He wriggles free and clutches his cheeks, looking traumatized. She fixes up his cuts and even blows on them, which just makes him nervous about her puckering up her lips so close to his face. Gah, I love that he’s so hyperaware while she’s just poking and prodding and teasing like he’s a little kid.

Pan-seok returns to the station and asks Eung-do if he looked into Dae-gu’s past yet. He didn’t have a chance to, but he says that Dae-gu’s mom died when he was in junior high and they don’t know about his father.

The age is enough to make Pan-seok wonder if he could be Kim Ji-yong, especially after Dae-gu’s last outburst, which made it sound like he had personal experience with a witness-related second crime. Yay, finally, someone smart enough to connect dots.

He knows it’s reaching, but he decides to go to the orphanage himself, and tells Eung-do to praise the kids and take them out to eat. Eung-do watches him go and sighs that Pan-seok is still so obsessed with that case, though he adds that he has reason to be.

Dae-gu and Soo-sun are greeted with a round of applause as they walk their perp into the precinct. Gook even goes in for a fist-bump, and Dae-gu reciprocates in his stick-in-the-mud way. It’s so cute.

His happy moment fades when he hears that Pan-seok is out on personal business, and he calls his accomplice S to give an update. This time we actually get to see who’s on the other end of the line, and WHAT… it’s Chief Kang! Her full name is Kang Seok-soon.

Okay, I did not expect her to be his informant. She assures him that they’ll have another chance, and to remain steadfast in his purpose. Does this make her evil? I’m pretty sure this makes her evil, which I did not see coming. Either that or she’s convinced that Pan-seok is a dirty cop too.

Pan-seok goes to the orphanage to ask about Dae-gu, but this time the director is prepared with a false story about Dae-gu losing both parents in a bus crash. Pan-seok asks for a picture of young Dae-gu, and she gives him one of a different boy. It works, and he leaves disappointed and wondering if he just jumped to conclusions.

The director tells Dae-gu that she did as he asked, and tells him that someone else on staff remembered seeing a scar on Combat Boots when he came around asking about him the other day.

Dae-gu and Gook share some morning cereal at home, and Tae-il comes out to cook them an actual breakfast (best roommate ever). Gook declines and shuffles off abruptly, while Dae-gu requests extra ham and cheese on his omelette like a little kid.

At work, Soo-sun glides over to Dae-gu in her chair to ask him something, and he gets all self-conscious about her being so close. He pushes her away, and when she tries to roll back, he sticks a ruler out: “Maintain a safe distance.”

She grumbles as she rolls back to her side, and he totally busts a smile while she’s not looking. Someone else IS watching though, and Dae-gu locks eyes with a very curious Pan-seok, who can’t figure out what to make of him.

Over lunch, Eung-do hands Pan-seok a mug shot of a criminal he’s put away four times. His last name is Eun and he has a son—couldn’t Dae-gu be a criminal’s son out for revenge? Pan-seok doesn’t even dignify the theory with an answer.

He admits that part of the obsession is just not knowing whether or not Ji-yong is alive or dead, and decides that he’s going to reopen the Masan case. Eung-do agrees to help him whenever he can.

They get called in by Chief Toad for an emergency meeting, and the whole department lines up. Sa-kyung arrives, and tellingly both Tae-il and Pan-seok light up to see her. Tae-il clocks her smiling at Pan-seok though, and looks miffed.

The all-important meeting is apparently because somebody played a prank on Chief Toad’s car again, and he foams at the mouth, calling it an inside job. He tells the culprit to confess today, or he’ll go digging through CCTV footage and it’ll only get worse. The detectives can barely contain their giggles.

Pan-seok’s team gets called out to a crime scene, where a man was killed in his own bathroom. As the team inspects the scene, the victim’s two sons get into a brawl, each screaming at the other that he killed Dad over the inheritance.

They take both brothers down to the station, where the hyung tells Dae-gu and Soo-sun that his younger brother definitely killed Dad. He’s become a monster in the last few years, living only inside his video games, and erupting in angry fits whenever Dad tried to get him to eat or got in his way. Hyung guesses that his brother killed Dad and didn’t even know it, because he’s so out of touch with reality.

But at the same time, the little bro is telling Tae-il and Gook that Hyung is the one who killed Dad, over life insurance. The older brother is an insurance salesman, and he had come to their father in desperation over making a sale, and gotten furious when Dad refused to help him. We see that Hyung was also in debt and at the end of his financial rope, when he saw a news broadcast about someone murdering his parents for the insurance payout. According to Little Bro, he came into the bathroom to find Hyung crouching over Dad’s body.

The team assembles to go over the evidence, and though the sliver of soap found on Dad’s foot suggests a simple accident, the autopsy reveals no injuries consistent with falling and bracing for impact. That suggests that murder is a possibility, and for now they stick to collecting more evidence.

Gook goes to the crime scene to see if anyone could’ve climbed over the balcony to get in, and Tae-il runs over to grab him, thinking he might fall over. Gook reacts the same way he did at breakfast—distant and grumpy, like he’s mad at him—and Tae-il sighs.

The rookies question neighbors, check CCTV footage and computer histories, and go over what they’ve found. All they know so far is that the younger brother never left his computer once, and the older brother came home and napped, and then found Dad dead in the bathroom, according to his statement. They wonder if it’s possible that someone could kill a parent for money, and hope that this isn’t a murder.

Soo-sun stays up late that night, reading about accidental falls and associated fractures. She then goes to the shower room with a pillow strapped to her head and mounts a camera. Are you doing what I think you’re doing?

Yup, she throws soap on the floor and falls backward onto a mat, trying over and over not to brace herself for the fall. What is the point of even reading the texts if you’re going to test the theory ass-first? She cracks me up.

She does it over and over, but every time her hands reach down to break her fall. In the morning, she presents her findings to Pan-seok like she just cracked the case wide open, and makes him watch the video of her falling.

He has to bite his lip to keep from busting a gut, but he can’t help but find her earnestness endearing, and smiles. She insists that they need to arrest the brothers, because it’s looking more and more like murder is the only possibility.

As Tae-il walks into the precinct that morning, a female officer shyly hands him a present, which seems to be a pretty regular occurrence from his reaction. Gook scowls, and Eung-do pats him on the back to say that he knows what it’s like—he’s been partners with Pan-seok for years, after all. Aw, sidekicks unite?

Eung-do tells Gook to re-write his latest case report without all the flowery emotional interpretation. They only need the facts, and he hands him Tae-il’s report to see how it’s done.

Tae-il asks if he’s being praised, and Gook pouts at being compared, complaining that Eung-do doesn’t understand that Tae-il is totally different from him: “He’s on a different dimension.” Eung-do: “Is he from another star?” Pfft.

Eung-do wonders if they fought, which Tae-il denies. But clearly whatever his secret was, it’s causing issues between them.

Gook answers a call from Mom and takes his anger out on her, snapping that all she ever asks is if he’s eaten, and that she should’ve fed him more when he was young so that he wouldn’t be so short. He hangs up and immediately feels bad for snapping at her.

Tae-il comes after him to ask why he’s being like this, and if it’s because of that secret that he shared. Gook denies it, but he gives him the brush-off yet again.

Pan-seok finally meets with Combat Boots, which I guess means he didn’t go the other day (that or the editor and screenwriter are having a star-crossed moment). They greet each other warily but with familiarity. Pan-seok says it’s been a long time and asks if he’s back for good.

Combat Boots says he returned because he has a debt to repay, and Pan-seok notes the scar behind his ear. Pan-seok asks what he wants, and Combat Boots tells him not to rush things: “Have you found that kid from eleven years ago?”

Dae-gu stays up re-reading the murder case file when Soo-sun calls. (He’s saved her number as Soybean Powder now.) She tries to be coy: “Partner~ did you notice that it’s raining outside?”

He doesn’t catch on at all and asks what she wants, and she calls him insensitive for wondering what any of it has to do with him. She’s sitting huddled in her tent shivering in the pouring rain, and later it finally dawns on him that that’s why she called. Doofus.

She wonders if she’ll have to go sleep at a jjimjilbang, when Pan-seok suddenly calls her name. Augh, you let Pan-seok beat you to the punch? That’s what you get for being dumb.

He asks why she isn’t sleeping in the overnight bunks in the precinct, but she says they’re all full in there. He tells her to get dressed and come out.

Of course Dae-gu arrives on the rooftop with umbrella in hand two steps too late—she’s already gone. He goes down to the women’s bunkroom and considers knocking, but he can’t bring himself to go that far and just returns home.

He keeps looking out the window thinking about the rain, when something catches his eye on his computer screen. Pan-seok walks into view of the spy cam, and then so does Soo-sun. Ack.

Soo-sun tells him that she’s fine to go stay at a jjimjilbang, but Pan-seok basically orders her to just stay here, and he’ll sleep elsewhere. How sweet. Her stomach growls so loudly that it can’t be ignored, so he gets out some ramyun for them to eat.

They get all tangled up in the kitchen looking for a pot, and he’s so hilariously awkward about trying not to touch her. From his reaction you’d think he’s never had a girl over ever.

He suddenly seems gawky as he sits there watching Soo-sun make ramyun. They sit down to eat, and then the doorbell rings. Hee, is it Dae-gu?

Oh crap, it’s Sa-kyung. She’s brought over food, and he starts stammering that someone’s here. You are so making things worse right now.

She can’t hide her shock when Soo-sun comes out, and he tells the story in the most nervous nonsensical way, just spitting out random unconnected phrases: “She was on the roof. There’s rain. Was gonna go to jjimjilbang. Eating ramyun now.” All three of them stand there in the doorway not knowing how to proceed.

Dae-gu fumes in his room and glugs water, trying not to freak out that Soo-sun is spending the night with Pan-seok.

Thankfully he gets called with a distraction when a man he was searching for turns up dead. It’s the man who threatened Mom about testifying all those years ago, and Dae-gu goes to the morgue to identify the body.

He confirms the man’s identity and comes out, but what he doesn’t realize is that Pan-seok got the same news from Eung-do and has arrived just minutes behind him.

He walks in just in time to see Dae-gu come out of the morgue. Omo.

Pan-seok knows it now, in his bones—this is too much of a coincidence to ignore. It takes Dae-gu a moment to even see Pan-seok there, and he stops cold when their eyes lock.

Pan-seok just stares at him intently, and finally says, “You were alive, Kim Ji-yong.”

COMMENTS

Aaaaaaaah! He knows! Okay, this is exciting, especially after it seemed like Dae-gu quelled his suspicions with the orphanage fakeout. But Pan-seok is sharp, and I love that he isn’t so easily deterred once he starts to suspect that Dae-gu might be Ji-yong. Now the question is whether he’s relieved to find Ji-yong because he’s the good guy (yes please), or threatened and put on the defensive because he’s the bad guy (say it ain’t so!). I’m just glad somebody knows who Dae-gu is now, because it changes the game and raises the stakes for everyone involved, good or bad.

The real shocker was Police Chief Kang’s involvement, after all her kind words to Pan-seok about the Masan case making him the detective he is today and him needing to move past it and go easier on himself. But if she’s helping Dae-gu to get dirt on both Pan-seok and Combat Boots, does she believe Pan-seok is behind this? Or is she the puppetmaster here, and Dae-gu’s being used unwittingly to help get rid of the only person who might challenge her? I’m so curious about that relationship now, and worried that Dae-gu is in over his head. How deep (and how high up) does this conspiracy go?

So far we haven’t been given enough plot morsels to call it anything more than intriguing, but I care very much about Pan-seok and Dae-gu, so as long as the case is the thing that ties them together and keeps them at odds, I’m on pins and needles every time they learn something new about each other. I hope that the overall conspiracy is nice and twisty just to keep it interesting, because I was pleasantly surprised by the Chief Kang twist and would love to see more of that out of the story.

The romantic entanglements are getting even better, especially now that Dae-gu is clearly sporting a crush. The jealousy is making my day (I was literally shouting, “That’s what you get for spying on people!” when he was forced to watch Soo-sun get rescued from the rain by his mortal enemy because he doesn’t know how to read between the lines). Although I’m considerably less happy about the misunderstanding involving Sa-kyung, because I just want her and Pan-seok to be happy and go on more adorable dates where he trips over his feet like an ungainly teenager. She’ll understand, right? I mean, he adores Soo-sun like a puppy, but he’s clearly head over heels in love with Sa-kyung. I guess I’m more concerned that their misunderstandings will have greater consequences, whereas Dae-gu can stand to spend a night stewing in his own idiocy. For a guy who spends every night nursing his insomnia with dramas, you’d think he’d have a better grasp on rainy days and romance.

Yes! Ever since I found out they're acting together, I wanted to see the bromance. I totally watched their scene together in "The Greatest Love" billions of time.

I've been waiting for this recap to come out (thanks, girlfriday) so that I could say: Soo Sun at Pan Seok's apartment! Exactly what I was hoping for and with the fall out I expected! Ever since the first episode with Soo Sun on the roof, I was anticipating that it would take this turn, and I was so excited to see it actually happen, I literally shrieked "YES!" at my computer screen.

Several other interesting developments too, especially with Pan Seok's realization about Ji Yong and the revelation about Police Chief Kang, but Soo Sun at Pan Seok's apartment was my favourite.

Oh, and in general I thought this was such a good episode. I was going to start listing a few of the other things that I really liked about it (Pan Seok and Sa Kyung and how cute he is with her, Dae Gu turning back to catch the perp, Soo Sun's earnestness in recreating the bathroom crime, the YFAS reference...) but the list started to get really long and I realised that I liked pretty much everything about it. I'm really enjoying this show, even more than I expected.

It seems Soo Sun is like a daughter and Pan Seok had this expression "this is how it would be like if your kid grew up and cooked for you?" even if he had a son, I feel like this is how he perceives it. and it gives more feels than his romance with Sa Kyung. Wouldn´t it be great if they became like a father-daughter? ah hot damn. would be so great for both. but especially Pan Seok.

I don't think he's interested in her at all as a woman, he just finds her endearing, as GF said, and it's more of a Mentor/Student relationship. She looks up to him, and he appreciates her earnestness.

The writing stinks to even go there. although I dont like her so PS can have her.

I don't think Pan Seok is attracted to Soo Sun, and I agree that would be a weird place to take the story. I think he's just being kind to her as one of his "kids", and that's going to cause some awkward misunderstanding both with Dae Go and Sa Kyung. But I don't think there's a love-line going there at all, in either direction. Or at least I hope there won't be.

it's pretty one sided chemistry since she's very unaware he's feeling that if he is. Which makes is rather gross so most people would prefer that he's not crushing on a young girl he calls his kid after he just got back with his wife.

I see scenes where PS's reactions can be read as attraction, but ultimately I think that he's just hyper-aware of situations where it can be misinterpreted that someone would think that he likes SS that his awkward avoidance of those situations is counter productive where it looks like he has feelings for SS. Does that make sense? Or maybe I'm just reaching for straws cause while I see the attraction between the two I really don't want the drama to take that turn!

Yes, this totally makes sense! Pan Seok is starting to really view the four as his kids, which accounts for his look of affection at Soo Sun when she was showing him her experiment. He's been calling them his kids for a while now and now I think that he's really starting to feel like they *are* his kids.

His sense of honor also accounts for his weirdness in his apartment, since he doesn't want to have any sign of impropriety between them and why he was planning on leaving rather than them sleeping under the same roof (because that could be misinterpreted). I also think that he can sense her feelings of him as Superman and doesn't want to give her the wrong idea about their relationship (doesn't want to encourage the admiration to turn into something more, like a crush). I also don't think that this is going to cause too much of a problem between Pan Seok and Sa Kyung because of what happened at Namsan Tower (she owes him one in the misunderstanding department).

Gotta say that I *love* this drama!

I am just waiting for DG and PS's father-son relationship.. since I guess, PS's and SK's son who died have the same age as DG :)

Do you really think the boys would be the same age? My first thought was that DG's mother was killed around the same time PS's and SK's son was killed in the hit and run and maybe that's why this Masan case bother's him so much - because it was the result of an already tragic situation when he failed as both a father and a detective?

I also think so. If the time Dae Gu's mother death and the hit-and-run was the same (judging from Pan Seok clothes), at that time Dae Gu was already 15 yo, and their son, I think, was still in elementary school or kindergarten.

Eh, Pan-seok kind of deserves to get into trouble for this "misunderstanding". He was actually sort of feeling something for Soo Sun just days after he had just told Sa-kyung all the lovely things he said and they just had that sweet and adorable almost date. So suffer Pan-seok!

I knew that spy camera would turn against Dae Gu eventually. I feel bad for him though. He's got such an endearing kid side and he probably knows nothing about romance at all. Or has the romantic experience of a 15 year old.

Police Chief is bad for sure. That music doesn't lie! I dont' think she's just there to get rid of corruption because let's be honest DG is the worst undercover cop of all time and if they actually wanted to do that they could have picked someone much better.

I'm so glad PS found out since I lost hope on Soo Sun ever remembering she remembered and PS finding out has a lot more meaning. Dae Gu also can't weasel his way out of this now. I'm sure he'll be happy he's alive... I think.

I half felt bad for him, and my other half was laughing at the backfire. He's not quite in love with her yet, so he's probably more miffed than upset anyway.

I too think he's got an ultra adorable kid inside him! I like how the drama depicts that in the most natural and minor ways. Like when he chooses to watch cartoons to sleep or how he likes his breakfast. It's mundane details that really make a character engrossing.

Pwahaha, the first thing I blurted out after reading your last paragraph Girlfriday was, "Well, someone's heartless towards Dae-gu!"

I love Sa-kyung and Pan-seok in small dozes, even if I'm slightly bugged that she forgave him so easily. In the first episode, she slapped in front of everyone. Now she's ready to go on dates with him after he asked for another chance... I think the in-between happenings didn't lead to such a drastic change in perception from her side but they're adorable, so I'll over look!

Also, I'm so upset with Gook. Whatever is up with him, I hate how he's treating Tae-il. Tae-il has been such an awesome guy; he cares for everyone, is always rational and never picks sides. He lets people have their way, is super understanding and even makes everyone breakfast! I think the secret could be that Tae-il is actually a doctor, which just makes Gook jealous and petty. I don't think its the gay thing because they're trying so hard for us to believe it is.

My screen just lights up a thousand folds whenever Dae-gu and Soo-sun are together doing adorable things. He's falling for her at a rather alarming speed, and she's absolutely clueless about it. I really like their dynamics because its simple rom-com trope. She's the only one with the power to make him smile, do goofy things or act a certain way. She moves him even when he tries so hard not to be. She makes him care even if he pretends thats the last thing he'd do. He tries to push her as far as possible, yet he's restless and jealous when she's with someone else. With an IQ of 150, he sure is really slow in the uptake when it comes to girls!

I'm expecting the Seoul Noona to make a come back when Soo-sun finds out he's Ji-yong - WTF ever happened to that anyway? Then she can be petty jealous; should be fun. For now, I'm thrilled to see Pan-seok finally figure out who Dae-gu is. I think either Chief Kang is the Big Bad, or Pan-seok is. I expect it to be the former but I want it to be Pan-seok because it makes for better story telling (dodges bullets lol). I like that they've convinced me he's good. So now I want them to make me feel like I've been conned; in a good way.

Oh... that scene with toad cracked me up so much, and I don't even know why. I was laughing like a hyena; maybe it's his face, but I burst a gut or few in that scene.

P.s. I'm pretty sure the reason Pan-seok didn't meet Boots the day before was because he was chasing the suspect down the subway line, that's why he set up a meeting next day.

Me, too. Who do you think a good one to be the adult Seoul Noona? I always think of Kim Tae Hee everytime I see her. A cameo from her would be great. :)

"I don’t think its the gay thing because they’re trying so hard for us to believe it is. "

Me too. I would really love if he really is gay though because he behaves like he is. If this is all a big joke on being gay I find it very stupid and offensive. I can take jokes like in Personal Taste because it wasn't about being gay is wrong, it was just something the character used for some gain but in YAS it's not the character, it's the whole show using it to make funny scenes so I'll be offended if he isn't gay, because it would be like if he was, it would be some big taboo.

0

@Lixie - I don't think they're making fun of him being gay, or at least I never felt it was their intention. I think they're setting him up to be that, have all the viewers believe so, and then throw the big bomb and say he's not. Somewhat like they did in 1994. They're using it as a surprise factor.

I'd be so disappointed if he seems like he's into guys, and then they tell us he's not. Because that would be really insulting. He is shown to have a noona crush on Sa-kyung, which ultimately makes me believe the writers are confused themselves or they would have to do a big reveal soon.

0

I don´t find joking about being gay offensive. I mean if you want to be equal, you can´t be privileged either. everyone gets joked about, all professions and all people. and only a few stupid ones get offended. smart people can joke about themselves. I don´t know why anyone should be uber-sensitive and be all "you cannot say ANYTHING!". get over it.
what irks me is when demanding your rights goes overboard and really becomes a way of controlling others and even freedom of thought.

0

@redfox - Erm, if "only a few stupid people get offended" then there wouldn't be the feminists and masculinists in the world. Being gay or lesbian definitely attracts a lot of idiotic, unnecessary jokes in dramas that are neither funny nor respectful. Fewer people call out on them, especially in Asia, so I think its absolutely fair for some to think its offensive. Also, a profession has nothing to do with sexuality. If they make fun of a 'pretty boy' being a cop, then they aren't claiming he's gay, but someone who's unlike for the stereotype of the profession.

Anyway, I don't feel the drama is joking about Tae-il being gay anyway. I think its more of a ploy to pull a shocker on the viewers on whatever reveal they're gonna make. I think Gook is just jealous of whatever Tae-il told him, so being gay is most likely not the answer. And neither is having a relationship with Sa-kyung.

0

I doubt it. But that's mostly because I doubt Gook would have a reason to feel bitter like he's currently acting. They better show it next week, my curiosity is getting the better of me!

the only thing that would make Gook bitter is if Tae Il cheated on some test to get into the police forces, or somthing to do with his skills. cause this is what they are fussing over at the moment.

or that he somehow caused the death or an accident to the guy on the photo.... maybe as a medical student?

0

I initially thought that Tae Il's secret was that he liked SK... but why would that make Gook upset? Shocked, yes... but Gook seems to be upset that he's short (and Tae Il is tall), that Tae Il gets all the admiration from girls and that he's smart. All this has nothing to do SK...

The only thing I think that can get Gook this upset is if Tae Il told him that he likes SS too. Gook will probably feel that he can't compete with Tae Il i height, looks and brains.
But that's unlikely.

0

I wonder if his secret has to do with his age or education. Maybe he is a bit younger than they all think, meaning he skipped a number of grades and such, or that he went to some crazy smart college because every time Gook was insulted it had something to do with Tae-il acting as if he's smarter (better abled to check for clues outside) or someone else thinking Tae-il was smarter (the reports).
I like the Sa-Kyung theory as well. There does seem to be clues pointing that way throughout other episodes.

I think the secret's got something to do with hospitals and surgery of some sort.
I may be going out on a limb (or two or four) here, but what if Tae-Il's big secret is that he's a transgender man (female to male) 0_0
Crazily far fetched, but it seems infinitesimally plausible coz:

(1) Tae-Il is frequently complimented for his pretty snow-white complexion.
(Ya, and if ONE were to follow this convoluted logic, then ONE would suspect even Kim Jae Won of being one. Yes, ONE needs psychiatric help).

(2) The doctor in the hospital seemed to recognize Tae-Il, and, if i remember correctly, greeted him with a sorta kiss on his neck (misleading ppl into believing he was gay).
Also, the weird expression on his face whenever he's in a hospital (reminds him of his surgeries, perhaps).
(Aw come on, this seems very faintly logical, imma' right..! )

(3) Gook seems to be having an inferiority complex regarding his height and the lack of female attention, which could be exacerbated by the fact that Tae-Il is naturally taller and is showered by female attention despite having been a girl originally.
(Hence the "he's totally different from me; he's from a different dimension" comment. Yes, I twisted that comment way beyond recognition.)

(4) Sa-Kyung might have been one of his girl buddies/friendly senior classmates from the past, so he is saddened by the fact that she doesn't recognise him now. (Yep yep, that makes sense. It does, right? right..? )

(5) Tae-Il is generally sensitive, sweet, and caring.
(And I don't know why that makes him a girl in my head, but I might as well add another crazy irrational point to this already ridiculous list of outlandish reasons why I think he might be a trans man) :D XD

Damn, I'm all out of reasons

Gook is the one person in this whole drama I just find super annoying. I guess he is supposed to be comedy relief, but I just find him really dumb.

As far as the Big Secret, I suspect he is either some high official or chaebol son.

Well, I think that since Tae Il is shown to be a flower boy, he might as well as had something going on with Sa Kyung, but only for some time. And for the medical dilemma, that might be true too. But I agree with the previous comments which point towards Gook being jealous of Tae Il, so I might as well say that Tae Il is an undercover chaebol (or chaebol-son, or something like that) Maybe he has a big family or something. (okay that was so not a good idea, I dont know why I wrote that.)
Anyway, that was a great episode. I must say, I was shocked to see Chief Kang as S. And there was a comment about the music being evil themed. I think I agree, because in most dramas (Korean or Non-Korean) the music tends to bring up the description of that specific character's true self. I loved the part where Dae Gu got jealous, he's so cute. <3 But for the Pan Seok-Soo Sun matter, I REALLY dont want him to like her. Or her to like him. That would ruin all the high hopes most people had when this drama started. Besides, wasn't Pan Seok already in love with Sa Kyung? I hope they leave it at that, and do not come up with a love triangle like that. Not with Pan Seok, anyhow, it doenst match his character.

I was not shocked that the chief was his informant...i just had a feeling.

I'm pretty sure she is not the 'bad guy' because Daegu seems to trust her completely (and trust is definitely an issue for him). Also, it'd be a hugeeeeeeee thing to paint the police chief in a bad light, politically speaking, even if it was a drama. (i.e. have you noticed in kdramas the president is rarely the bad guy even if he's often suspected of being the villain? it's usually the person right below him pulling all the strings).

There must be an even bigger overlying conspiracy going on that involves not only Daegu and Panseok but also the chief and somebody high up in the food chain. Ack!

Now that S is Chief Kang, I'm hoping that it will answer some niggling questions I have.

1) Did the Director of the orphanage eventually go to the police? She can't possibly harbour a young boy who has claimed he lost his memory without first finding out if anyone is looking for him. That would be very irresponsible. I certainly hope she did, and came to realise that Jiyoung was only pretending to lose his memory because he was scared for his life - that somehow Chief Kang came into the picture.

2) Jiyoung's new identity as Eun Daegu. That is not possible unless it's done through the underworld or through law enforcing authorities.

3) It certainly explains how he got into the police force! I was wondering how a person like him passed the psychological tests that I'm sure the Police academy makes all applicants take. Can't simply give a gun to a possible psycho, right?
And it also explains how he was chosen to be on the detective squad and coincidentally gets posted to the same precinct as SPS, his nemesis.

I think Chief Kang is capable to make an agreement/work with the orphanage director, gave Ji Yong new identity, and got him to the police force. Hmm, but I also hope we can get the answers for your questions.^^

I watched this episode live last night with my very limited Korean. I didn’t know the orphanage director has already given Pan Seok false information about his parents, so when the orphanage director was going to show him Dae Gu’s old photo, I screamed ‘noooooo’ until she showed a different one. Ah, thanks God, the director gave him the wrong information per Dae Gu’s request.
Dae Gu can sleep now without cartoons thanks to Soo Sun. She really needs to be by his side.
S is chief Kang! I can’t believe it. What’s her motivation? Is he a good or bad woman? What a twist drama. So she’s the one who sent him the package in episode 2.
Dae Gu is caught by Seo Pan Seok! And now Soo Sun needs to know the truth, too, then they three can join forces to fight the baddies, that is, if Pan Seok is a good guy. I hope he is.
I’m sorry for being off topic, but the older hyung is the nice Manager Lee from Shining Inheritance. It’s a reunion with Seung Gi. I wonder if they reminisced the old days together on the set. Can’t believe it’s already 5 years.^^
Thanks GF.

YESSSSSSSSS!!!! I have been waiting for PS to find out about DG for ages. And I swear at the end of the last episode, if no one found out, I was going to stop watching (not really. Empty threats :P) but man, if PS turns out to be evil I think I might cry. I so badly want DG and ps to have a hyung/dongsaeng relationship. Show if you take that from me I will be so angry, I will not be held responsible for my actions!!!

And also, they had better not do the sweep under the rug thing they did with ss. Coz that would definitely not be believable. Even if it is a Korean drama!

I was literally cringing at the possibility of PS having any romantic feelings for SS because PS and Sa-kyung are adorable together and I want them to be happy together again. Is that too much to ask? :( I can accept it if it's pure misunderstanding but I really, really don't want the writer to tease us with the romantic notions. I mean, PS is the one who was asking for second chances and I believe he's still very in love with ex-wife the way he looked at her so I hope the misunderstanding leads to PS and SK closer together, and DG will be downing more bottles of water and fume with jealousy because of the PS-SS association.

On the other hand, I didn't expect the chief to be S either, so it's a surprise. I'm wondering how the stories are going to connect; it's kinda unpredictable now with all the involvements and motives. I'm happy that someone FINALLY discovered Dae-gu's identity and I can't wait to see how their relationship (Pan-seok and Dae-gu) evolves from there. I'm hoping that Dae-gu admits to being Ji-yong, but it's only episode 8..

I think in the latest police case will end up being an accident. The reason there aren't any fractures is because the father fell while holding the cellphone his older son gave him and he didn't what to break it. Why else would the put so much emphasis on the cellphone?

The best scene this episode is when just before Dae-gu locks eyes with Pan-seok from across the precinct, there is some light background music and it instantly stops when they lock eyes.

This episode had so much awesome. I completely agree with: "I hope that the overall conspiracy is nice and twisty just to keep it interesting"

Cha Seung-won always delivers when it comes to chemistry. City Hall, Greatest Love, Athena...

When CSW turns on the charm my mind goes blank. I just finished watching the drama. Came here to read the recap and had completely forgot about how blown away I was to find out about Chief Kang earlier in the episode.

I am sad about Gook's treatment of Tae-il. I am guessing the name whispered was Sa-kyung. Maybe Gook feels like it a betrayal to Pan-seok. I miss their bromance but I loved the nod to "You From Another Star".

Agreed I really want Sa-kyung and Pan-seok to be happy together.

Honestly I don't want Soo-sun and Dae-gu to be together. They don't have any chemistry and the story doesn't need some unconvincing romance bogging it down.

Sa-kyung and Pan-seok are more unconvincing than Soo Sun and Dae Gu tbh. At least Soo Sun and Dae Gu have room to grow as a couple (and chemistry seems to be subjective, since I think they are great together) while SK and PS went from broken up and full of hate and regret to back together without us ever seeing where they worked out their issues.

Clearly our opinions are different and that's cool.

To me Sa-kyung and Pan-seok make more sense because of the history. You see hate between them. I saw anger and blame from SK but never hate. I only ever saw love and regret from PS.

I know I am in the minority regarding Soo sun and Dae gu. Lots of people see a connection between the two of them. I don't.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I also didn't feel hate between Sa-kyung and Pan-seok. I felt he was holding onto guilt and she was holding onto having someone to blame. When she finally cried on his shoulders, I felt they had moved past the hurt and are on their way to getting back together. I don't feel the chemistry between Soo-sun and Dae-gu and I feel like show is trying to shove it down my throat. If they were being set up to being awesome partners like Starsky and Gracie Lou Freebush, that I can get behind, but not as a romantic pairing.
I also think that whatever secret Tae-il told Gookie was probably intelligence related, like Maybe Tae-il is a genius or something and Gookie feels really inadequate beside him. Or Maybe Tae-il is a chaebol's son.
I don't think Pan-seok is having feelings for Soo-sun, I interpreted the look he gave her as 'She's so adorable when She's working hard' kinda like a father would give his daughter if she did Well in school or something.

I wish they would have given them an episode or two from I hate you so much (even if it's not really hate) to cutesy smiling and dates. But that's just me. SK has to feel a lot of pain still and PS a lot of regret so it's just really unbelievable they can do a 180 so quickly in their feelings and actions.

I actually thought when she gave him that note she was going to play him and make him suffer, not that she was serious about it lol

SS and DG is not really supposed to be super hot
chemistry, but a nice connection from disliking each other(and not in the I hate you so much I want to jump your bones way) to friendship and a good partnership to love eventually. That's the journey I want to see, which since there are two couples you are free to want to see the other one instead.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Agree with this completely. There is something majorly missing between the 'I hate you for killing our son' phase(and I saw it as hate, but maybe that's the actress's problem in emoting) to 'I forgive you, and now we should go on cute dates like the past 11 years didn't exist'. Pan-seok didn't do anything special, and neither did she find out some crucial info for her to just change her mind so easily. The consistency is lacking, and thus they're very unconvincing to me.

Also, I don't see Dae-gu and Soo-sun's love-hate relationship as something similar to say... Ha Ji-won and Hyun Bin in Secret Garden. They aren't into each other but denying it all the way. They're partners at work, with Soo-sun slowly allowing him to gradually open up and get himself out of a cage he's locked himself into. They aren't supposed to be full of sexually charged chemistry, but the chemistry of companionship and friendship is there. For me, that's great because they have 12 episodes to develop the rest of the love line.

0

I agree with the PS and SK relationship. Although I feel that they have more chemistry than DG and SS, I felt that it was too orchestrated and unrealistic for them to start dating again so soon. Sk certainly still have feelings for PS, or else she wouldn't still react so violently and emotionally every time he's around, but she has been holding some bitterness and grudge for 11 years! That's not going to go away so soon. I don't mind her thawing towards him. The scene when she put her head on his shoulders and told him that she missed their son was good. But to start passing him heart shaped notes and smile shyly and winsomely is a bit too much and too sudden.

As for DG and SS, my heart breaks! This is the first time in all of Seunggi's drama that I've not warmed up to the female lead character.
@lemondoodle - I did find her annoying at the beginning, and although she's less so now, I too find her overly cute. And frustratingly comic. I find that I can't take her seriously, and I'm trying to find a link between DG and her.

0

@Mandy

I also can't get over that they were supposedly separated for many years. The accident happened 11 years ago I guess. How do you just pick up right where you left off after so many years. They both had to be much different people now. They are one couple they really needed more development before they even try to start to get back together. Not just suddenly back together for some reason.

0

And yeah, DG/SS are not love hate. They are (or were) pretty indifferent to each other. In the past SS had a slight crush, but that ended before it even began. In the present, SS wanted to be friendly because she was his partner and DG wanted nothing to do with her. There is no denial on either part, they just didn't have much interest in each other or at all.

In something like Secret Garden Ha Jiwon's character disliked the guy, but couldn't really ignore him totally and he was obsessed with her. Totally different dynamic. In YAAS they are just slowly developing into partners and things will grow from there.

0

@crazyahjumma fan

Yep. I do like SS at times, but find her kind of OTT a lot of the times. I mentioned the ramen making scene and just how she acted making me cringe a bit. Who makes ramen like that lol

I can see the connection between SS and DG though. She reminds him of the past and when things were happier in is life. She's a connection to Ji Yong when he thought Ji Yong was long dead inside of him. You can see that in his smiling scene. She hasn't changed in so many years and that has to bring comfort to a guy who had to totally change everything about himself the past 11 years.

I don't think PS feels any 'love' for SS- it's more like he loves her like a daughter. He misses the way his wife cooked for him, so he's touched when SS makes them ramen. He misses the way his son probably showed and told him things with so much trust- just how SS eagerly shows him the video she filmed of her falling. PS holds back his laughter because of how earnest and naive SS is. It reminds him of being a father.

So I like seeing this dynamic - this father-daughter relationship. It's touching without being creepy.

But it's also kdrama land so Sa Kyung will misunderstand everything and we'll have more slaps and yelling for 6 more episodes...

Or maybe she will be rational... I can dream, right?

-Lovely.

It is probably that. Though the writer is sort of leaving it ambiguous, or maybe people just see romance where there is none. I'm all for Dae Gu thinking otherwise, but not for PS to actually have feelings for SS.. since that basically makes him a bit of a cad.

Instead of getting mad, she should take Soo Sun home with her. Though I really wanted her to move in with Dae Gu.

Required fields are marked *

I certainly hope that it's not so. It'll be so wrong for the following 2 reasons:
1) PS just told SK that she makes his heart race, and asked her to start again with him.
2) He saw DG and SS kissing and thinks that there might be something going between them - so how can he start having feelings for SS?

I re-watched that scene, and I saw amusement when she was showing him the videos, and later awkwardness - hopefully it's because he offered her his place to stay and doesn't want her to misunderstand - cos you know, the silly chit went and hugged him after his release from prison.

I really, really hope the writer doesn't go down that line! It's gonna spoil the show for me, not to mention being ludicrous (for the sake of a love triangle and to make DG jealous). I don't mind so much she has a 'crush' on PS - like she thinks he's this cool guy - that's enough to make DG jealous and more realistic.

I suspect him to be the killer of PS son to distract him from the boy waiting in the school 11 years ago.(He is either the big evil or Dae gu father or both hhh). I love the show and I hope that il will be better in the next episodes.

I feel like Tae Il's secret is something involving him either having plastic surgery or some sort of height enhancement surgery? This would explain why he knew that doctor from that plastic surgery clinic back in the starting episodes, and also why Gook suddenly got so sensitive about his own height and annoyed when girls hit on Tae Il.

I'm just loving all the little bits of romance flying around! How great is it to see our sulking puppy get jealous? <3

I have to say that I panicked a little every time Soo Sun interacted with Team Leader. He's probably almost twice her age, and I was worried for a second that the show might turn twisty and make him harbor feelings for Soo Sun. Now THAT would not be fun. I really hope Sa Kyung will trust him for once so we can all move past this ugly misunderstanding ASAP! :( Just cuz... Sa Kyung is scary when she's mad.

Well, yet again Go Ara does not disappoint. I love when she does zany things and her out house dancing plus this slip and fall study just makes me love her efforts and facial expressions. Ha!

I wonder if Chief Kang had any relation to the original victims family. The one that Daegus mom witness.

I think Gook is annoyed with Tae Il because he learned that he's a rick kid doctor or something. He seems to be picking on Tae Il's intelligence and looks all of a sudden so it's probably a "how come God gave you this and that, it's so unfair!" moment on his side.

I think the chief is definitely the bad one, her smirk plus the look in her eyes after that phone call was scary.

Totally agree with you concerning Gook and Tae Il. He has suddenly developed an inferiority complex with respect to Tae Il and the comments he made to Eung Do about the report strongly suggest that he is resentful because he feels like Tae Il is above him. And we've gotten the hints before about Tae Il's medical background.

I feel bad for Tae Il, because he trusted Gook with his secret, and Gook promised that he would handle it well, whatever it was, and now he's being so mean. I hope they hug and make up soon (but probably not without a shocking public revelation of the secret, because that's how kdramas work).

Gook is jealous. He was expecting a flaw in the otherwise perfect Tae-il, which would allow him to step up and be the good friend that Tae-il is thankful for, and instead he got more perfection.

Oh, I know. But knowing the reason Gook is acting that way doesn't stop me from feeling bad for Tae Il, you know?

I feel bad for Tae-il, but then I feel bad for Gook since he's been treated like some leper the majority of the drama by everyone. It's not like the guy is bad looking or has a bad personality. If he is feeling inferior to him he just needs to finds his strengths and not blame TI for being perfect.

Great episode this was!!

The first thing that I wanted to mention was on the development that Dae Gu has been having with opening up. I love that this drama is doing the whole -- she/he opened me up to be a better and happier person-- which fits beautifully with Dae Gu and Soon Sun since he is seriously broken. The scene where she makes him fall asleep by just being next to him and talking to him is so sweet and also when he is cursing himself for going back to catch the killer instead of finding out more on scar man and Pan -Seok real relationship, the fact that she made him forget his worries even for a few minutes shows that she is becoming a huge part of his life. I love how he is falling hard for her first and hopefully will now allow her to stay with him in his room-- hopefully? maybe? Please??

Pan Seok is hilarious and just lovable but the idea that he may have something for Soon sun is not very appealing. It seems forced and just awakard all over. I would love it if only Dae gu thought that and he was the only one misunderstand. Pan Seok belongs to Sa Kyung and thats that. The little date they had was so lovely and I want to see more of them. I hope they end up remarrying but I think Im wishing too much for a drama :p

Whatever Tae-il said to Gook , it must be something that made Gook self-conscious. I mean the guy is getting all mad at his mom for nothing feeding him right to be taller. I think he might have said something about begin a doctor once or something else regarding his position. The fact that he thought he was way out of his league is a major clue.

Super excited for how Dae Gu is going to get out of Pan Seok suspicions next week. I don't think he can, Pan Seok is Legendary and not as slow as Soo Sun... what happen to that anyway-- she just forgot AHAHHA Oh the comedy.

THANK YOU FOR THE AWESOME RECAP!! UNTIL NEXT WEEK!!

I'm soooo mad at Gook! Why is he treating babyTaeil like this when he promised he would understand; whatever it is?
-_-;
Bad bad Gookie! Wetblanket! Pfffttt~~

I really want to know why PS sits and talk with CombatBoots like they're some old friends. I mean, i want and i do believe PS is our good guy; the hero here. But, i rly want to know why are there hanging out casually?

Does anybody else find it weird, and little gross, that 'Boots' is wearing the same boots 12 years later?

Several people have said so, but I see nothing odd about it. The chances that they are exactly the same pair is about zero, but if he likes those boots, why not? Of course, I have had exactly the same pair of Ray Bans for 30 years, so maybe it's me who's the odd one here.

People keep bringing it up, and I continue to be baffled. He likes combat boots. People who wear and like work shoes wear the same style all their lives. It's no big deal.

He probably owns a dozen of those boots.

One pair per year, maybe? *shrugs*

12 years? try 18. That´s how long I wore my favorite and reliable winter boots.

"The real shocker was Police Chief Kang’s involvement"

REALLY? Even my wife, who hardly watches K Dramas at all, picked this several episodes ago. As real shockers go, it's right up there with the Sun rising in the East.

I feel as if Tae-il told Gook something like he was a chaebol's son, and that makes Gook feel inferior. Though Gook is reacting a bit too strongly over a secret...

Thanks for the recap girlfriday! I've been stalking this site like crazy. Seems like I found my anothe crack for this year after "You from another star" ! And oh, dae-gu's line "maintain a safe distance" kinda reminds me of Do Min-joon's "one-meter" rule to Chun Song-yi. :)

I doubt they will develop the PS-SS love line; perhaps as a close mentor-mentee relationship but with DG n SK misunderstanding and getting jealous. Serves to accelerate the coming together of the couples?

But with dramas, you ll never know. If they do chase the love line I d be horrified cos there are a few things worth focussing on that needs to be fleshed out more and properly. Doing this love line thing seems to only cover up some under developed plot lines.

Boots dropped it in his confrontation with Dae Gu. Dae Gu ran away. Boots left. Soo Sun must have went back into the classroom out of curiosity and picked it up.
